His Dark Materials
So, hello there! This is my first post and, obsessed as I am, I feel the need to convince everyone to read my favorite book series ever, 'His Dark Materials' by Philip Pullman, because I don't see it talked about enough.
So the series is pretty much a retelling of Paradise Lost by John Milton, and the action in the first book happened in England, in a world like ours, expect for the daemons, which represent one's soul and can shape-shift into different animals until puberty, when they settle on one final form. They can also talk! Who wouldn't wish a creature like that following them around?
This series has everything that is popular, from badass characters to the most heartbreaking scenes ever (I cried a few times while reading the books, and I am not ashamed of that).
The main character is an unhinged child of eleven called Lyra Belacqua, who lies whenever she gets the chances and lived in a college. She wants to explore the world and is drawn into adventures in the North, and then beyond, into other worlds. (She also collects a whole pack of adoptive parents, like a texan aeronaut, a witch queen, a bear king and a tired nun-turned-scientist).
Then, in the second book, we get Will Parry, a young teenager who has to leave his mother behind and travel to a other worlds too. He's very relatable for teenagers, being forced to grow up early and having a lot of internal rage.
They basically travel to the Land of the Dead, go through the most heartbreaking experiences of all, then end up in a perfect world with elephants on wheels. And while this is happening, there's also a war against God, a small enemies-to-lovers second-chance-romance thing going on between Lyra's parents, the Magisterium (which represents the Church) trying to kill Lyra because of an ancient prophecy...
There's also a TV adaptation of these books, called 'His Dark Materials', and it is incredible : the casting is pretty much perfect, visuals are wonderful and the show expands certain plots that hadn't been seen in the books, or that had been less important or explicit.
Back in the 2000s, there was also the movie 'The Golden Compass' which was not as great as the books or the TV show, but more people know of that one, and honestly, the casting is very good.
These books are filled with random, clever things and they deserve more hype. I honestly think they are underappreciated and, even though they are more than 20 years old, they should grow in popularity. The characters and the romance are wonderfully written, the world-building is interesting, the daemons are one of the best things ever invented and the writing style is very captivating.
Hope this was pleasing to read :)

*I have been looking at this gif for a little too long today so this came out (update the author shared a textless gif 💛)
A word of warning: This is interactive fiction, because sometimes my fever brain just flips. That means that as you read the fic, you'll need to make some choices, and it will change the content to some extent. More details and the fic below the cut! <3
A few important notes:
While usually this format is used for x reader fics, I've spared you the cringe (not to say I haven't written those haha). This is a normal fic, but along the way, as I said, there will be choices to make, and some of them change the details of the story.
I am LAZY. There aren't different endings. It's just a sweet little thing that you can re-run in a different way if you want to get different scenes.
At precisely one point (because I am lazy), the choices you made before will determine the option available to you.
I think, a usual run should be around 1300 words? idk
You may need to click 'Start again' in the top right corner before beginning bc sometimes the instrument's brain doesn't work right
This was written purely for my enjoyment, so they are being silly and in-love okay
There are some achievement badges in the end??
To illustrate on the story map / general visuals a little:

The 2007 Golden Compass movie is so fascinating to me. Cause, like, it’s so sanitized, it’s so mangled, it’s scrubbed completely clean of anything children or parents might find challenging. They cut out a huge chunk of the final act so that it could have a weirdly abrupt happy ending.
And yet. That bear still did get its jaw ripped off. In this totally bland family-friendly movie, a talking bear gets the entire lower half of his face torn off. THAT’s the place they chose to remain book-accurate. Someone in the studio chose a very strange hill to die on.

I watched the first season of His Dark Materials (Netflix edition) and loved it, but fell off during season 2. I promised myself I'd read the books, have had them since I was little (there's a bit of a story here, but I won't recount it today), but haven't actually started reading them until today.
I've been spoiled about a few things from the series (basically just the angel stuff, and even then only a little bit), and I can already tell I'll like it. I love stuff that critiques Christianity (the only reason I watch Helluva Boss, actually), and I'm already making several theories. Like is Pan's name based off of Paimon and something else? Is Stelmaria connected to the stars? Was Lyra's idea of the keeper of the college chapel's ability being to talk to the daemons of stars actually not far off? I'm seeing all the angel imagery with the Lady (I've forgotten her name) and the Dust coming down from the sky, and I can't wait to see where this all ends up.
But that's not why I'm making this post. I'm making this post because chapter 3 left me with 1 (maybe more, once I finish it) hot take slash idea.
I want to see a children's show about Lyra's life before the events of the book. Specifically: the Child Wars.
I want to see all the alliances, the betrayals, the battles, the patriotism and fostered hatred and classism ALL OF IT. I want to see the adults being like "oh yes, children playing. What an innocent life they lead," as the college orphans, servant's kids, street kids and gyptian children go to war. I want to see the Kidnapping of Lyra of Jordan, the Alliance of Colleges against the Township, the Jordan-Gyptian Raid. I want to see future children and teens in the real world roleplay the events of the show like Warrior Cats kids. I would LOVE if this became a thing. 100% would watch it even if it was live-action.
... I should probably watch Craig of the Creek.

Lionel's 30 Days of Daemonism - REVISED
1) Your daemon's name and meaning/origin?
2) Do you have more than one dae, and what do you think of having more than one?
3) Your daemon's favorite/personal/comfort form(s), and yours? Are they the same or not?
4) What is your symbolic/Pullman form? If you don't follow the TDF systems, make something like art, writing, or a moodboard instead!
5) What is your analytical form? If you don't follow the TDF systems, make something like art, writing, or a moodboard instead!
6) How does having a dae help you, and do you do anything beneficial for your dae?
7) What are your dae's favorite aesthetics, and how do they compare to yours?
8) What is your relationship with your dae? Do you get along, do you fight sometimes?
9) How often and how clearly do you project them onto the physical world around you?
10) What is your dae's voice like?
11) Describe your friends who are also daemians (a person who has a daemon)! Or, if you have none: what do you and your dae like to do together, and what do you both hate?
12) If you're alterhuman, how does being a daemian interact with your kintype identities? Or, if you're not alterhuman: do you see your dae in your dreams/nightmares?
13) Do you own any items that remind you of or directly represent your dae?
14) What is your best memory involving your dae?
15) Does anyone IRL know about your dae or daemonism? What do they think about it?
16) If you've read the HDM books, who's your favorite character and why? If you have not, do you ever plan on reading them, and if not then why?
17) Are your personal rules/headcanons for how daemons work different than canon HDM? If you haven't enough knowledge of HDM to know, then make art, writing, or a moodboard instead!
18) Would you live in a world where everyone's daemon was corporeal, including yours?
19) If you are religious or spiritual, does your dae come into that? Or, if you aren't: do you see your dae as essentially a more "solid" imaginary friend?
20) A question for your dae: what do you think of your other half?
21) How are you different from your dae in personality?
22) How long has your dae been in your life? For years, or less than that?
23) If you are plural, how does your dae interact with your headmates? Do you consider them another headmate or as a part of yourself, making one individual together? Or, if you aren't plural: has your dae ever disappeared from your mindspace for a long time, and if so, why? I know some daemians who've lost their dae for whatever reason and had to replace them with a new one.
24) Question for your dae: how do you interact with the world, with or without being actively projected by your other half?
25) How did you discover daemonism? The HDM books, the online communities, the Golden Compass film, or the BBC show?
26) An extension of the previous question: was it challenging to begin communicating with your dae, and is it easier now?
27) Are there any forms you and-or your dae absolutely loathe?
28) Do your dae have a human or humanoid form? A form that's an extinct animal or mythical/fictional?
29) A question for your dae: what is your favorite place in the mindspace or the physical world?
30) Free day! Have fun, whatever you choose to do!

Hot Moms in Media Tournament Submissions Survey
First of all I would like to thank those who participated in the previous tournament, and welcome those who are new to this blog! This tournament is fairly self explanatory and will be very familiar to those who participated in the HDM Tournament, but I'll explain it anyways. Through multiple rounds YOU (🫵🏼) will vote alongside your comrades/temporary rivals to help your Mom win, and hopefully help them claim the crown of Hottest Mom in Media™️.
What Qualifies as a Mom?:
Your Mom must be a Mom
Adopted, Found Family, and Aunt who mainly acts as the Mom are Moms.
Your Mom has to be a fictional character
Ex. Cinderella's stepmom in the live action counts as a fictional mom. She's just not a good one.
Mom must have at least ONE scene where they’re taking care of their kid(s)
SHE AIN'T NO MILF IF SHE DON'T TAKE CARE OF THEIR KIDS!
And as always if you have any questions regarding this tournament or the submissions survey then feel free to send me an ask. Have a lovely day!

H j t for the ask game :)
H: How would you describe your writing style?
Hm... I'm going to answer both ways this question can be read, I think!
So in terms of how I tackle writing, I'd say I'm both incredibly straight forwards, and incredibly chaotic. For the most part, when I'm writing fanfic or original works(and even to some extent non-creative writing like analytical/argumentative essays or research papers), I come up with the basic idea of What Will Happen, and then I start at the beginning and write each chapter, from beginning to end, without planning it. This is widely considered to be A Bad Idea, for good reasons. I'm currently trying to teach myself to at least plan out the scene by writing it as a weird first draft of a screen play, with general action cues and dialogue but no description, and it is going relatively well, so far, but we shall see if it sticks! [I also write all my fanfic by hand and then either use my reMarkable to convert it into text, or copy it over by hand because I am Not A Reasonable Person]
In terms of how my writing, like, sounds, on the other hand, I am told I have a really good skill at aping other authors' styles, so I think perhaps my writing style is Chameleon? I am a heavily masking sort of person, entirely subconsciously, and said mask adapts very quickly to what I'm around to the point that it only takes about half an hour, these days, of exposure to have an undetectably false British or Irish accent - not always even the accent I'm surrounded by, but a slightly posh central English accent, and a blend of a Dublin and Galways Irish accent, because Oxford&Coventry and Galway&Dublin are the places I've spent the most time - and this happens in my writing! Whatever I'm absorbing the most of at that time will reflect itself in my word choices, and the cadence and rhythm of my sentences.
J: What’s your favorite fanfic trope? Have you written it?
I think my favourite when it's done well is soulmate AUs, because there are so many concepts to play with in them: how does it effect the culture of the world you're writing in? What happens if you fall in love with someone who isn't your soulmate? What if you have multiple soulmates? What if you just straight up don't have a soulmate?
I haven't written soulmate AU yet, but I have an idea for one both for the Aubreyad, and a DA:Awakening into DA2 idea that I may explore at some point - the DA one next time my brain circles back to Thedas in terms of special interest du jour; the Aubreyad idea is sitting on the back burner until I either run out of ideas for So long lives this, or need to take a break from it.
Also, honorable shout-out to HMD/daemon AUs. Love those things so much. I love giving characters A Little Guy and thinking about how they as a person would sublimate part of their soul out of their body, what animal it would be, and how they would interact with it. I have a very slightly started Hannigram HMD AU(a True HDM AU taking place in Lyra's World, even, though in North America not Oxford ofc), and a partially thought out Aubreyad daemon AU(I don't know enough about the history of Lyra's world to write historical fiction within it).
T: Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?
Hmm... I wouldn't say I can't stand it, but the thing I'm least likely to read is probably modern/coffeeshop/highschool/uni AUs, unless there is a compelling plot point mentioned in the summary, or I am familiar with the author. I don't always enjoy when the main themes of the original are gone unless there is an equally present driving force. They definitely can be done well, and I've certainly read ones that I was doubtful of at first that I really enjoyed, but for the most part that would be what I'm most wary of.
However, I do like AUs like this where they keep the driving force and change the circumstances. Modern Thedas with magic? Amazing, 10/10, I want to know how Isabela would text so bad. Hannigram AU where Will did something not at all FBI related, but he and Hannibal meet anyways and Hannibal is still a cannibal? Divine - they always will meet because they are entangled like atoms; Hannibal will always be Hannibal, and he will always be drawn to Will.
I think this is harder to do when there are less fantastical elements to the story; I have a harder time imagining a coffeeshop AU I would enjoy for the Aubreyad, for example, just because there are no longer tall ships or Napoleon to beat - and there are, in fact, not many modern AUs for the Aubreyad; there are a good deal more for Temeraire, because there are fantastical elements to Temeraire (dragons) that can be transferred over.
Thank you for the questions, @papercranesong and I hope you enjoyed my essay xD

Hi hello my friends and super nerds
I would like to write or do something with a Spy x Family + His Dark Materials crossover... aka ‘what if the Forgers had daemons’ scenario. I’m not great at form finding, especially on fictional characters, so I really hope some daemians can help me out .w.
I’m gonna preface this with two things: - I personally believe daemons would react to trauma and stress in bizarre ways. Most of the cast of SxF is severely traumatized so uh there’s some fun I want to do, like Twilight having never settled, Anya’s never taking a ‘real’ animal form etc - I’d ideally like a mix of symbolic and realistic form stuff. I haven’t been in the HDM/daemonism community too much for a good decade now, but I’ve seen some people say they’re different things so uh... I’d like to just blend it
Twilight (Loid + [REDACTED]): Due to the massive trauma early in life, his daemon has never settled. It basically gives him the master of disguise superpower easily, as it’s extremely rare (and bad!) when that happens. Even so, not many people know of it, just some WISE higher-ups like Sylvia, maybe Franky As Twilight, he’s very independent, detached, meticulous, solitary, detail-oriented, with a brain moving a mile a minute. His ‘default’ form would reflect this. As Loid, however, he’d need something more gentle and approachable, that cares deeply for family, but still very intelligent The fun part would be that he doesn’t realize he’s settling slowly by acting as Loid. I’m not sure if he’d really fit exactly what Loid’s persona daemon is, but we know ‘on the inside’ he’s very loyal, manipulative, crazy smart, anxious
Yor: We don’t know exactly what happened to Yor’s parents, but I think it was likely around settling years (onset of puberty). Having to take over an adult role for Yuri, I’d think she settled early and suddenly. She’s also fiercely loyal (even more than Twilight), cares deeply for family, worried about not being normal enough or not being good enough constantly, act first think later, scary when threatened When we first meet her, Yor’s daemon would be sickly, skinny, mottled. But through the story, they’d get healthier
Anya: Since Anya’s a child, she doesn’t have a defined form yet. I do want to note that, since she’s a human experiment, something is still very wrong with her daemon, though. I’m mostly going with that her forms are always mythical animals and chimeras, never a ‘real’ animal, but open to feedback if anyone thinks something different?
Yuri: His is ‘normal’... relatively. He probably also settled early but not weirdly or suddenly. He’s obsessive, overly protective, uses intelligence as power, aggressive, absolutely dedicated, only vulnerable to their loved ones
Franky: Probably the most normal daemon situation in the whole cast tbh. He’s a jokester but very smart and weirdly wise. He’s like the most typical ENTP ever, if you know your MBTI. Social and savvy, but not very charming
Sylvia (Handler): Her daemon would be quiet and stoic with an aggressive side. She’s a mentor and a leader, who deals with the unfortunate ugly situations, so she’s very dedicated and hard working. There’s a softer side to her, but rarely seen. Not as tunnel-vision as Yuri at all, but probably a form in the same vein
Nightfall (Fiona): Super quiet, super dedicated, super antisocial and unemotional. Except that she’s obsessed with Twilight, of course, just that she never shows it ever. I have an idea that her daemon likes to make ‘weirdly aggressive’ moves at Twilight’s, like laying on them, which Twilight is always slightly alarmed by but it’s just Fiona’s very miscommunicated adoration lmao
Donovan: He’s severed. Nobody knows this. They just think his daemon hides in his suit all the time
Damian: Wants to settle asap and tries to take ‘noble’ forms like lions and wolves and eagles, due to pressure
Becky: Is weird and tries to put accessories on her daemon. The forms are always extra pretty animals
Okay so now that I kinda wrote down the jist of the cast... Anyone wanna help me with form finding for them? .w.;;;;;;;;;;
