196 - Notting Hill (EW Summer Movie Preview - Listeners’ Choice)
Tumblr media
Whoopsie daisies, we have come to the close of our May miniseries taking a deep focus look back at Entertainment Weekly’s seasonal movie preview issues. And the closer was chosen by you, listeners! For your Listeners’ Choice, you have selected the Summer Movie Preview for Notting Hill. The film famously went head-to-head with grand behemoth Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace and still emerged victorious at the box office, thanks in part to Julia Roberts’ reemergent romcom power and the charms of Hugh Grant back in bumbling mop-haired mode. Notting Hill stars both respectively as the most famous actress in the world and a modest travel bookstore owner who fall in love against the odds, and it comes with all of the signatures of the combined powers of director Roger Michell and screenwriter Richard Curtis.
This episode, we look back at the oft-revisited 1999 movie year and unpack why it remains so fascinating to talk about. We also discuss Roberts’ double-header of romcom hits that summer with Runaway Bride, Pulp Fiction’s influence on films like Go, and South Park’s movie mission to wage war with the MPAA.
Topics also include capsizing in a boat with Tilda Swinton, Eyes Wide Shut’s veil of mystery before release, and VH1 Divas Live 1999.

h e a d c a n o n s, pt. 1
( tw: mentions of eating disorder )
Tumblr media
When Lia is drunk/ tipsy she likes to act our favorite movie scenes—even if she’s alone.  Most recently was the titanic scene (where she also got her knee suck in the balcony). She can quote all of the legally blonde courtroom scene and definitely knows the mean girls Christmas dance as well.
When Lia bakes, she has this small habit of humming or singing when she does so. Interestingly enough, for how involved baking is, she’d done it for so long she’s relatively good at shutting her brain down for a while when she does it. Or, at least, it takes all her energy to bake instead of overthink. It’s why she stress bakes so frequently and it’s also why she hums/sings when she does it. It’s mindless and she’d be embarrassed if anyone heard it–but she doesn’t always realize she’s doing it.
Surprisingly, while Lia’s favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, her favorite movie is Love Actually. She can quote most of the movie–as she can with most things she loves–and her favorite scene is when Hugh Grant dances to “Jump (For My Love)” by the Pointed Sisters. This is another scene she sometimes recreates when drunk.
Lia is not the biggest fan of Harry Potter. She doesn’t even know what house she’s in (its Ravenclaw but she can’t remember that). She never got into the series, never found it to be that interesting–magic didn’t quench her thirst the way some other books did…
Yes, that’s right. Magnolia Barnes was absolutely a Twi-Hard. You could not pull her away from these books–it was even worse since, at age 18, you’d think she would have had better taste. But no, she was #TeamJacob all the way. And yes, she did go see the movies when they came out. And yes, she did cry at the end. Don’t judge her.
Lia loves watching home renovation shows, though she literally has no reason to watch the show. She’s never had to do a home reno in her life. But she likes to imagine a day when she would–she thinks she’d be quite good at it. Sometimes about being able to use her hands in a meaningful way strikes her as soothing–its why she likes baking so much. She doesn’t have proof she’d be good at it, but she has a feeling she’d be pretty good with her hands if she can make delicate pastries so well.
Lia loves college football. Like absolutely adores it. Big Clemson gal, Tiger Rag is her jam. She remembered spending fall weekends at their Lake Keowee home so they could easily drive over to Clemson and go to a home game. Hates the Gamecocks with a passion. Rivalry weekend was her favorite time of year growing up–it was so full of excitement and energy. In fact, the most heated you might ever see Lia out of an argument is walking a Clemson football game. And yes she knows exactly what’s going on down on the field and if you ask her one more time if she’s sure–she will throw a piece of pie in your face.
Speaking of Clemson, Lia wanted to go there for college–get her degree in English. But she also had high dreams to be the baton twirler on the field–the one who dots the i with whatever family they’re celebrating that day in the pregame ceremony? Yeah, she wanted that. She thought that maybe she could mix the two worlds of hers, her two areas of interest–but no, that was never to be the case.
Lia grew up going to State fairs every summer–but never an amusement or theme park. She has never been to a planetarium, and her first trip to an Aquarium was with Beckett. Her first trip to a Zoo was with Ryder. So sure she’s ridden some rides, but it’s never been like most people have. It’s her dream to go to DisneyWorld one day and somehow, someway, stay in the Cinderella Suite. she’s watched enough youtube videos to know that not one gets to stay there but contest winners and celebrities, but still–a girl can dream.
While her peers took their vacations in Paris, Nice, Monaco and Italy, Lia’s father preferred north–like Amsterdam. Which, to be fair, was really very nice and Lia liked going. She even had a friend, Tess, who she’d hang out with when they would go on holiday as they called it. Tess was cool–she was into collecting model trains and really liked to read also. But then Tess’s parents sent her to boarding school after they had found out that she had been chatting with people online that she shouldn’t have been. Lia thought that sounded awfully harsh and hoped her parents would never do something like that to her. (Oh, irony)
When she’s sick, she doesn’t want chicken noodle soup, she wants wonton soup. Why? She doesn’t know, but she’s never liked chicken noodle soup. She thinks its the mushy carrots and celery. But wonton soup is essentially the same thing, but with a wonton and better flavor. She likes hers with spinach.
If toast is cut diagonal, she can’t eat it. Vertical squad for the win.
Big Bon Appetit fan. The quickest way to make her smile is to make her watch an episode of “one of everything” or “gourmet makes”. she might have a small crush on alex delany but we don’t talk about that.
Lia believe in aliens but not ghosts. She’s not big on conspiracy theories either–but she might be tempted by the stories at Denver Intentional Airport. She just can’t accept that humans are the only living things in the universe. That’s a lot for her–but she doesn’t go actively searching for them. Ghosts, on the other hand–she just never believed in them. Why would anyone want to haunt someone? Seemed like a weird power play to her. And no, despite what some people at the Malnati think, the moon is not made of cheese.
Lia is obsessed with spreadsheets. If you asked her what the dorkiest thing about her was–she’d tell you it was her planner and spreadsheets. She has a spreadsheet for probably every aspect of her life. her planner–which is really a bullet journal–is how she keeps track of things when she can’t get on her computer, but she has one for chores, her books, work, her bucket list, hell–even a bachelorette watch party she had a few years ago. She loves being organized.
Office supplies are her kryptonite. She absolutely loves blank notebooks and pens. She has a favorite pen for different things. Pentel RSVP RT Retractable Ball Point in black for everyday items, Staedleter fine tips felt pens for her bullet journal, sharpie pens for when she wants her notes to stand out, Zebra Mildliner for headers in her bullet journal or giving the pages shape. She is incredible persnickety on who can borrow what pen, and even keeps less important pens in her pencil bag just to lend out. And under very few circumstances will you ever see Magnolia Barnes using a pencil unless she has been required too. She hates the darn things.
Lia doesn’t swear–her mother taught her ladies don’t swear and while she doesn’t believe language as a gatekeeper for femininity anymore, the expectation still holds. So if you do hear her use a curse word, something is very very wrong.
Go to coffee order, you ask? Easy. Grande White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha with Blonde Espresso and Almondmilk and yes whipped cream. Sometimes she’ll get it with Raspberry instead. If its iced, it’s a tall and no whipped cream. However, she can also be bought over with a Venti Iced Guava Tea Lemonade with 8 pumps sweetener.
Lia has seen the Chatworth House–the house used as Pemberly in the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice. While its not her all time favorite movie, she sure loves it still and begged her parents to take her one summer. They relented and it was everything she had dreamed of seeing.
It’s well known that Lia cannot dance–she often tells people she can only line dance and Viennese Walz, and the former only happens when she’s tipsy on PBRs.
Lia loves sleeping with windows open because she can’t sleep in silence. The white noise of the city helps relax her and and makes her sleep easier.
However, she must read in silence–any noise will distract her and she gets relatively grumpy if anyone interrupts her reading. She also adores reading by a window. She likes the way the natural lights illuminates the pages.
Words are some of Lia’s favorite things–she thinks they’re magic. So loves the way they sound and likes to think about the way they feel in her mouth and how they roll off the tongue. She does her best to take her time when speaking too–because if words are so important, its better to get them right the first time. (Although perhaps she would learn that getting it right may not always be nearly as important as saying something at all).
(tw: eating disorder) Not many people know this, but after the book incident, Lia has begun to go to therapy. Her counselor, Tonya, has been helping her try to work through what things are Lia and what things are Lia’s mother. They haven’t gotten to the eating disorder conversation yet–and Lia dreads it. because Lia has never used the term out loud–in fact, the only time it was ever spoken was by the doctor the night of the incident. She has never named it and technically never claimed it out loud–though she knows its true in her heart.
Lia hates pickles. Don’t know why, but she thinks they are gross. Also parmesan cheese.
Magnolia loves horses–perhaps not the extend of others, but she had grown up riding them and when she rode them, she always sensed a freedom that was just out of reach at home. Perhaps that was because who was always riding wit her, but she doesn’t like to dive deep into that. It complicates things (that maybe needed to be complicated, just sayin’). Leaving her childhood horse Butternut was like leaving a pet (something the Barnes did not have as Lia grew up). Butternut and her went on a lot of adventures together, usually along side Buttersquash and Jack. It was good squad.
Lia’ favorite dessert is Mrs. Whetstone’s peach cobbler–and she has pour her life’s work into recreating it since she never asked for the recipe before she left. Every time she tries, she feels like she gets a little closer, but its never quite right. But it does remind her of home and its one of those memories she loves dearly. Anyone who asks her, though, what her favorite dessert is, she’ll say cheesecake because nothing even compares in her mind to that cobbler and she doesn’t want something to try to do something that will never reach what she expects. And she does love cheesecake.
Favorite flavor of yogurt? Chobani Raspberry Lemonade. Its only available in the summertime, but boy is it worth the wait.

Stay Golden Sunday: The Custody Battle
Dorothy’s sister Gloria arrives and wants Sophia to come live with her. Rose and Blanche clash over a production of Macbeth.
Tumblr media
Picture It...
Dorothy and Sophia are tidying ahead of the arrival of Gloria, Sophia’s other daughter and Dorothy’s little sister. Sophia subtly needles Dorothy for not having a date -- and fortuitously, Blanche enters and asks to borrow Dorothy’s jewelry for her own date. She’s going on a date with the director of the local community theater, who she’s hoping will soon cast her as Lady Macbeth. Sophia continues to nag Dorothy for not having a date. Dorothy gets angry at Sophia for her meddling, and demands space. Sophia leaves in a huff.
The next morning, Blanche is confident her tete-a-tete with the director will get her the part, though she and Rose are still going to the audition. Dorothy and Sophia are still annoyed at each other, but put it aside when Gloria arrives. Gloria, a wealthy widow, gives her mother and sister fabulous gifts. When Sophia guilts her over staying in a hotel, Dorothy offers to let Gloria share her (Dorothy’s) room.
DOROTHY: Hi! How was the audition? BLANCHE: Wonderful! I’m 99% sure I got the part. ROSE: Oh Blanche, there were so many good people there. BLANCHE: Trust me, I got this part in the sack. ROSE: She means in the bag. DOROTHY: No honey, she means in the sack.
That night, as Sophia and Gloria are out shopping, Blanche comes back from the audition convinced she got the part. She and Rose ask about Gloria’s relationship with Dorothy, and Dorothy confesses she’s always felt her parents favored Gloria. Blanche relates how she felt the same way about her parents and her sisters. Rose exposits about her idyllic family life, annoying the other girls enough that Blanche lets the kitchen door slam in her face.
Gloria and Dorothy settle down in bed together, with Gloria asking if Dorothy resents her for having money, a happy marriage and successful children -- none of which Dorothy has (and gee, nice of you to point it out, Gloria). Dorothy says she has grown beyond such sibling rivalry. Gloria continues to go on about her palatial home in California. Dorothy says she and Sophia would love to come out for a visit, and Gloria finally drops the bomb: She wants Sophia to come live with her, and Sophia agreed.
GLORIA: This reminds me of when we were little and you used to read me bedtime stories. DOROTHY: Oh yeah, yeah... the Bogeyman and the Little Girl... the Zombie in the Hamper... Cannibal Parents. I think between the ages of 5 and 7 you might have gotten two hours’ sleep.
Dorothy talks to Sophia about her plan to live with Gloria. Sophia avoids talking about what she wants, and says this way she can give Dorothy space. Dorothy doesn’t try to dissuade her, saying Gloria can give her a better life. Sophia looks very uncertain when Dorothy leaves.
In the kitchen, both Rose and Dorothy deliver bad news to Blanche. Rose says Blanche was cast as Witch #3, and Rose got the part of Lady Macbeth. Dorothy tells both that Sophia is leaving, and they’re heartbroken, insisting that they don’t want Sophia to leave. Dorothy forbids them from guilting Sophia, and leaves. Rose offers to let Blanche fill in for her as Lady Macbeth, but Blanche demurs gracefully.
BLANCHE: Well Rose, isn’t that sweet? And I do love you for it, honey, but I just couldn’t. I could never fit this trim little body in that big old tent of a dress they’re going to have to make for you.
After avoiding it for a few hours, Dorothy gives in and confronts Gloria, telling her it’s not fair of her to steal Sophia away when she’s already the favorite. Gloria reveals that she thinks Dorothy is the favorite, because Sophia respected and trusted her and constantly pointed out how much smarter and self-reliant she was to Gloria. Gloria admits she’s envious of how happy Dorothy’s life is compared with hers, and she wanted part of that. She says she knows Sophia doesn’t want to leave, and Dorothy goes to talk to their mother.
Dorothy demands that Sophia stay, and Sophia at first refuses but then agrees. She says she and Dorothy both need a little space from each other occasionally, but she’ll stay and look after the Girls. She breaks the news to Gloria, who understands. Sophia says she’s happy that both of her daughters love her and want her around so much.
SOPHIA: I love you. I love all my children. GLORIA: Even Phil? SOPHIA: Sure -- but don’t tell him, he’ll want to borrow money.
Later that night, the Girls are ecstatic that Sophia isn’t leaving. She brings them presents she was planning to give them when she thought she was moving. They open the presents and discover their own things, which Sophia purloined. After she leaves the kitchen, they wonder what else she might have taken and go to search her room. Rose cautiously exits last, worried about the door slamming in her face again.
“I think all my children are special... except Phil.”
I’ll be honest, there’s a reason for the gap between this review and the last one. Sure, Christmas and New Years (not to mention a busted keyboard) shifted my priorities a bit, but were this almost any other episode, I would have still gotten it out no matter what else was going on. But the truth is, I didn’t allot the necessary time to analyze this episode because... well, I didn’t want to. Because this episode is just not very good.
Remember when I said that Golden Girls had no truly bad episodes, but there were some that were noticeably lower-rung than others? This wasn’t the episode I had in mind when I said that (I’ll tell you which episode was when we get to it), but this is still a pretty good example of what I mean. It’s not particularly funny, has no meaningful message, doesn’t involve any character growth, and is confusingly written.
SOPHIA: I should have known you couldn’t make it without me. DOROTHY: You’re right, I can’t. And neither can Blanche. And neither can Rose. SOPHIA: Of course not Rose. The woman can hardly find her way to work!
I’d never given it much thought before I had to pick it apart for this blog. Now that I’ve watched it with a necessarily discerning eye, I couldn’t help but get this weird sense of flatness. Not badness, per se, just a total lack of good distinguishing features.
For example, I usually insert one of my favorite one-liners as the header text above my analysis section, and I had to really pick apart this episode to come up with any single line that gave me a little smile. That’s not to say that there aren’t funny exchanges in this episode, but no Girl is given a single stand-out line that’s still funny, divorced from context. I’m using an “except Phil” line because this is the first time we see Sophia use it as more of a catchphrase.
I don’t have any behind-the-scenes material that might explain why the episode feels so lacking. Maybe it’s because this is Terry Hughes’ first episode as director? There are definitely places where the script doesn’t feel nearly as tight as it could be -- the several minutes Rose spends reminiscing about her happy childhood don’t really do much besides fill time, except maybe set up for the “kitchen door face slam” gag.
ROSE: *reminiscing about her saccharine family Christmases* And then Daddy would tell us a story, and tuck us into our feather-- DOROTHY: Who was your father, Rose? Michael Landon?
If I had to put this down to a single element, I think it’d be the portrayal of Gloria. Sisterly rivalry is a recurring theme in this show . . . seriously, none of the Girls have good relationships with their sisters. We saw this already with Blanche and Virginia, but Dorothy and Gloria provide a slightly different take on it. Whereas Virginia and Blanche have been clashing their whole lives and are only just now starting to reconcile, Dorothy and Gloria have a warm and loving relationship with unaddressed resentment beneath the surface.
The difference is, Virginia gave the impression of being a three-dimensional character. There were subtleties to her, such as her inability to keep from rising to Blanche’s bait no matter how much she claimed to want a more peaceful relationship. That just doesn’t exist with Gloria, or at least not Gloria as she exists in this episode.
In fact, the writers don’t seem to have a clue what to do with Gloria. She’s explicitly stated to be distant from her mother and sister, never inviting them to her home in California and only calling three times a year and yet wants her mother to move in with her. She’s sometimes obliviously insensitive, and yet has enough self-awareness to shoot holes in Dorothy’s insecurities.
I’m not sure if I like the fact that the resolution of the rivalry is Gloria saying, “Actually, I’m envious of you and want part of your happiness for myself,” as opposed to, “I, too, wish to spend some of my mother’s last years with her.” It just doesn’t seem realistic that Gloria’s desire to spend time with Sophia is rooted in her feelings towards Dorothy. It seems more like the ending to a revenge fantasy than a proper wrap-up of the story.
BLANCHE: Now, when were little, every year my sisters had huge parties. With clowns and magicians and tons of presents. DOROTHY: And you didn’t? BLANCHE: Well not exactly. I mean, I did have parties and I had presents but... I never had a clown. *smiles* Not until I was... BLANCHE & DOROTHY: Much older.
It doesn’t help that the B-plot is a little undercooked. Blanche’s extreme desire for a part in “Mister William Shakespeare’s masterpiece” is funny enough, especially since she thinks her sexual performance is an adequate substitute for theatrical performance -- I mean, she’s Blanche. She probably thinks her sexual performance is enough to eclipse all other forms of performance anywhere, ever.
But what I don’t get about it is how Rose managed to snag the part of Lady Macbeth despite not wanting it. Granted, it’s been a long time since my community theater days, but I think you generally have to say which parts you’re auditioning for before you audition, so the director doesn’t cast someone who can’t commit the time to a big role. I could be wrong about that, though. I get that Rose not expressing any of her own interest in the play makes it extra funny when she actually gets the part, but it’s still a little confusing to me.
Still, I don’t want to end the review on a sour note, so I’ll say this: There’s not much in the way of a moral or character growth in this episode, but there is something to be said for Dorothy and Sophia coming to the conclusion that too much togetherness isn’t good for them. Given that we’re now going on a year in pandemic lockdown, I can’t help but think that’ll resonate with some of us.
Episode rating: 🍰🍰 (two cheesecake slices out of five)
Favorite Part of the Episode:
The exchange between Rose and Blanche over the casting of Lady Macbeth, culminating in Blanche brandishing a kitchen knife in the most darkly funny way possible:

Studio Tour
In light of the need for distraction making me clean up my entire studio of the clutter that had accumulated over the last few months, it looks really nice right now. I enjoy when other people give tours of their work spaces, so here’s mine.
I’ve said it before but my studio is my sanctuary. It’s primarily my office space for my business as an illustrator/designer/colorist, but it’s also my nerd cave, lady lair, whatever other cutesy name you can think of. It’s a place that’s just mine where I can close the door and just be by myself. I spend 90% of my waking hours in here.
The magnet board is my system for letting other people in the house know what I’m up to without having to verbally tell them. Most of the time, you can bug me. If one of those arrows is pointing to “Working”, though, the house better be on fire before you disturb me.
Tumblr media
The green chair is the Gaming Chair. I use the collapsible music stand for game guides and whatever else I need to look at while playing.
Tumblr media
I don’t post about Aladdin a lot on my blog, but I’ve been an avid collector of Aladdin stuff for the last 25 years. This includes fine art, sculptures, jewelry, toys, just everything. My favorite pieces are on display in here.
Tumblr media
My incomplete awards corner with my illustration degree and some of the awards I got for art things in high school. I still need to hang my State medals. Yeah, it’s high school, but those awards have really fond memories attached to them -- both people and events -- which I think of every time I look at them.
My mom gave me that lucky cat specifically to display in my office because it’s supposed to be good luck for business. The bottle is a mock up of a Takara Plum Wine packaging re-design I did in college.
Tumblr media
The back wall. Favorite art pieces, favorite art books, and a bunch of retro gaming stuff. I need to replace the shelves in the bookcases before I can put all of my art books on them... the current shelves are particleboard, so they sag under the weight of so many big coffee table books.
Tumblr media
My retro gaming setup, i.e. every Nintendo console I’ve had since childhood (save for the WiiU that’s in my bedroom) plus one PS2. They’re all hooked up to an 8 port switch box so I can play anything with the press of a button, and the controllers are stored in the black drawers. I’m still missing a few Zelda amiibos. Boo. >:\
Tumblr media
The cherry blossom lamp is one of my favorite things in the whole room. Makka is the keeper of the keys for my studio and bedroom on her tail hook, and my latest Yuuri and Victor nendos gave her company with the magnets they came with. The cut off magnet below her says “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” The fridge is loaded with various drinks and tasty snacks so I don’t have to leave the room unless I really want to. lol
Tumblr media
The Work Corner.
Tumblr media
My big Victors are getting impatient waiting on their Yuuri companions. The adorable crochet Makka was a Christmas present from the lovely @paxohana.
Tumblr media
Aaaaand my desk. I wear fuzzy arm warmers while working because they let my hand/forearm easily slide around on the surface of the Cintiq. The tight sketch for “Yes.” is prepped and waiting for color studies.
The strip of paper on the top of my monitor has the quote on it from my blog header: “The greater the artist, the greater the doubt; perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize. --Robert Hughes” I’ve had that quote within viewing distance of my work area for the last 15 years.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, these guys keep me company. The little origami Totoro and Pikachu were given to me by one of the Japanese cast members in the Japan pavilion in Epcot after she saw the Totoro keychain I had on my drink koozie. They’re so cute I die every time I look at them, especially Pikachu’s little Japanese flag. That’s a real rose that I replace every other week... I like having something alive in my work space.
My studio was a labor of love from start to finish that I did a good 90% of the remodeling work on by myself with my dad’s teaching supervision, so I’m quite proud of it. I love love love it and don’t know what I used to do without it. I really do hope that every creative person out there either already does or will eventually be able to have their own space like this, because it really is invaluable to my mental/emotional health as well as my creative output.♥♥♥

SteelPath July MLP updates and news
June MLP performance seemed to reflect a reversal of sentiment as COVID-19 cases returned in certain regions. That likely influenced the near-term trajectory of what appeared to be improving energy consumption. Despite a softer market, some midstream companies advanced new projects and completed corporate simplification transactions.
MLP market overview
Midstream MLPs, as measured by the Alerian MLP Index (AMZ), ended June down 7.9% on a price and total return basis. The AMZ results underperformed the S&P 500 Index’s 2.0% total return for the month. The best performing midstream subsector for June was the Compression group, while the Diversified subsector underperformed, on average.

Chart of the month: Associated gas, once a drag, may now begin to help natural gas prices
Pricing for natural gas has been challenged for many years as supply growth has exceeded demand growth. Unbeknownst to some, the robust supply of natural gas is the direct result of increased oil production. Most oil wells also produce some natural gas, and production of this “associated gas” has been rising substantially alongside the growth of crude oil produced from shale. However, the sharp decline in the rig count of primary crude oil shale plays in recent months has likely changed the trajectory of associated gas production and may benefit natural gas pricing, and production from dry gas basins, in the years ahead. The situation is similar for natural gas liquids.

Dizzy heights for professional Preston
It was quite a special a special moment around 2pm in the away end at Charlton. The 1,128 travelling fans were singing "We are top of the league" and with such gusto as if we were singing to the whole nation. In fact we were and the lads on the pitch savoured the moment but only for a short while as they know there are plenty more rivers to be crossed before North End even start dreaming of reaching the promised land. North End clinched the game with a Penalty from Gally just before the hour mark and North End managed the rest of the game out very satisfactorily. It wasn`t our best performance of the season but it was enough to see off a Charlton side still a bit naive in the ways of the Championship and in some respects Lee Bowyer had more than met his tactical match in the opposite dugout in the shape of Alex Neil. North End huffed and puffed a bit in the first half but we always looked the more likely in my opinion to break the deadlock and so it came to pass in the end that we ran our fairly comfortable winners of a game that will go do in the memory for the result more than the performance.
Alex Neil made two changes to the team that started against Blackburn last week with Ben Davies coming in for Andrew Hughes and Jayden Stockley leading the line after coming on as sub last week and making so much difference. The early exchanges belong to North End without troubling the Addicks defence too much. Darnell Fisher had a long rang free kick fairly easily saved and at the other end the home side saw a ficked on header go just past the post, Gallagher came on to replace the injured Daniel Johnson and his calmness on the ball seemed to settle the North End midfield a bit more. A well placed cross saw Barkhuizen with a header from about ten yards but the chance went begging and Charlton lived to fight another day. Both sides had plenty of the ball but North End looked the more dangerous particularly down the flanks where Maguire and Barkhuizen were getting through plenty of good work ably assisted by Stockley who I thought had a very decent game at Centre Forward.
After the break North End, kicking towards the travelling fans, started a little quicker and although some of the play was lateral we always looked calm on the ball with Bauer and Davies looking as solid as ever at the back. North End were pressing with Maguire getting plenty of room down the left side and causing the home defence more than enough trouble with his twists and turns. Just before the hour mark came the deciding moment in the game when Stockley was flattened in the Charlton box by Lockyer and referee Webb had absolutely no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The ground went hush as Gally placed the ball on the spot because you just thought at that moment that one goal could easily win this game. Six stride backwards and then turn and accelerate into the ball and crash it into the net. The away end went wild as the realisation that we were currently top of the section became apparent. Charlton tried to throw everything froward but couldnt make any real impact and late on Barkhuizen should have sealed the game when cutting in from the right but unfortunately shot straight at the Charlton keeper.
It was a long day for many with the coaches leaving at 4:30am, however it was all worth it and we claimed the three points and ascended to the summit of the Championship even if it might only be for 32 hours. The manager was not taking anything for granted after the game and quite rightly praised his players for doing a professional job in what looked like a difficult fixture on paper before the game. Plenty of plus performances for North End but I am going to give my man of the match to Jayden Stockley who I thought worked tirelessly throughout the game and never stopped trying even though he was running on empty at the end. Hudderfield are next up at Deepdale before the third international break and if the current league position doesn`t get some more fans on Deepdale I don`t know what will. This is a team with no superstars but with plenty of passion and pride playing for each other and for the manager. The two things which could seal the deal this term is some sensible financial support for the manager in January and another three or four thousand through the turnstiles every home game. Then, well....maybe, just maybe!
