Campaign to make The God of Arepo an award winning work and win a literal brick as a trophy for the authors and for Tumblr community as a whole (SUCCEEDED!!!! Update below)
Tumblr media
As the artist for one of The God of Arepo comics, my version is up for consideration for the Ignatz Awards for Outstanding Online Comic.
Tumblr media
For those of you who don't know the Ignatz is one of the highest industry awards that "recognize outstanding achievements in comics and cartooning by small press creators or creator-owned projects published by larger publishers".
The thing is, winning the award means winning an actual literal brick. Because the mascot is a brick-throwing mouse. So they have to make a bit where the trophy is a brick. Like. Look.
Tumblr media
For a long time I thought it was just plain bricks they were handing out, but my friend who won a couple of bricks two years ago had theirs stamped (I saw the bricks in person at their house). So now I am obsessed with the idea of The God of Arepo winning an Ignatz trophy. It will have the honours stamped. On a freaking brick. That's the most Tumblr level meme trophy this comic/story could win (which is also a legit high honour industry award on its own btw don't get me wrong). But wilder than that, the brick allows me to do something. It allows me to smash that break into 5 pieces and ship one of each to the authors plus myself. Writing Prompts, sadoeuphemist, ciiriianan, stu-pot and me will get a piece of clay in recognition for our work with the farmer who built a temple out of stone. The full circle moment.
Tumblr media
Imagine the value of this win to the lore of this Tumblr sacred text/folklore. This brick will be smashed and given to the creators, but as a collective folklore, it's also dedicated to all of us on this hellsite too. AWARD WINNING. If The God of Arepo wins I will document the entire process of smashing that brick here.
But we have to make this happen. We need to gather our collective energy and make this campaign work. Please help make The God of Arepo an award-winning story and vote for it in the Outstanding Online Comic category (link). You will need to request a ballot, then submit your vote. I recommend checking out the other nominated comics too. The Ignatz really shortlists good stuff. The voting closes September 8 2023 . LET'S GET THE GOD OF AREPO A BRICK FOR HIS TEMPLE!! LET'S GO!!!! REBLOGS HELP TOO!!

Hello Bixby. A while ago there was a nice big post circulating on tumblr that had a juicy list of a bunch of stories that everyone on tumblr has read. I cannot for the life of me find it, and I am hoping you might know of it and maybe where to find it?
It has such bangers as the God of arepo, the child prophet and his crow god, the lady that overcame the tyrant wizard by choosing her death to be in service of her country, the woman that was imprisoned for a thousand years, the apocalypse at the daycare, the child priestess of a very old snake god. And so many more!! That I sadly cannot remember.
Any change you can help find it again?
Hello! Yes, I know the list you're talking about! It was not in my likes, so I had to search more broadly, and I found it!
I ended up looking on reddit because tumblr search is poop. (thank you r/tumblr)
https://www.tumblr.com/dannnnnnnnnnnnex/700073427344736256/love-how-tumblr-has-its-own-folk-stories-yeah-the
I also found a blog where someone is gathering these stories and reblogging them to collect them in one place (I knew someone was doing it, but I couldn't remember who or where.)
https://www.tumblr.com/hellsite-folklore
And there I found another list that's much expanded on the original and adds a bunch of different people's contributions from reblogs by @much-the-millers-kid, and they did an incredible job of it- citing who made the suggestions, indicating whether the link went to a story or a comic, and who did image descriptions for the comics, where applicable.
https://much-the-millers-kid.tumblr.com/post/700210850573762560/going-to-try-to-do-as-complete-a-list-from-the
(I'm still amazingly flattered to have my work included with the likes of the God of Arepo, the Witch's Cat, Grandma Accidentally Summons a Demon, and fucking Stabby the Goddamned Roomba, are you fucking kidding me? Prestigious goddamned company.)

Titan TVman and Beowulf are Basically the Same Character: Why Skibidi Toilet Is Folklore
It’s been a long time since I’ve touched the hellsite (I used to doodle and write dirty fic), but I’m fascinated by the silly toilet men videos, their popularity, and the confusion about their popularity. And because I’m a huge nerd and always want to know why people do things, I wrote something. It’s too long to leave on my Notes app and forget about, and I’m also not letting skibidi toilets anywhere near my serious blog. So I actually came back to Tumblr for this.
Tumblr media
(Also the first stupid doodle I’ve done in forever, here’s the original meme.)
Toilet humour is obviously a huge part of why it’s so popular, and imho it’s a poop joke that got bigger than the creator intended it to. Toilets are endlessly amusing, particularly for kids, because learning to manage your waste is essential to being a civilised person but something that no one really wants to do. Some of the first conflicts between kids and their parents are often around cleanliness and potty training, and as we get older, the toilet is one of the few places where we’re first alone, particularly if we share a bedroom with siblings. Childlore and fiction about childhood is full of toilets: bullies that strike in school toilets, toilet ghosts like Bloody Mary and Hanako-san, people who died on the loo, and rats or spiders that bite your bum. It’s a classic example of a liminal space that looks mundane but could be full of scary shit.
So that’s my first smart theory, Skibidi Toilet is a contemporary haunted toilet story with something to do with dirt and discomfort vs tech. Clever theories about symbolism are fun and I think symbolism that feels relevant and familiar might be why something first attracts someone’s attention, but I don’t think it can explain the thing having fandom.
The only thing people love as much as poop jokes is stories about cool guys having punch ups, and there’s plenty of that as well. Visually and thematically, Skibidi uses all the tropes that we love in serious popular media - fights, explosions, monsters, giants, noise, the aforementioned cool robots. Swap out skibidi toilets for alien invaders, and cameramen with plungers for cyborgs with swords, and we’d have a respectable alien apocalypse story that’s identical to five other summer blockbusters. But as it is, it’s so ridiculous that it can only be a silly little internet video.
There’s a video by MatPat making a convincing argument that it’s actually about the conflict between independent content creators and the conventional media industry. But again, I think it’s also probably only indirectly what’s turning curious views into millions of subscriptions, especially since the earlier netlore was pretty niche. I think what viewers are picking up on is the dissonance between cool robots, apocalypse horror, and silly toilets, evidenced by most of the comments on YouTube being variation of “why is this actually good”. It’s got the same vibe as other stuff I’d classify as creepypasta-style or meme-style horror: Five Nights at Freddy’s, Among Us, Homestuck, and so on. In meme horror, there is an in-universe threat to characters that’s not played for laughs. However, something like a ridiculous gimmick, a parody of pop culture, or a dissonantly cute art style makes it clear that adult viewers who understand it as fiction don’t have to respect the threat.
The line between feared and respected has always been thin. A cool example of this is the word aglæca in Beowulf and other Old English texts. Aglæca is a debated word because it’s mainly used to describe monsters and demons, but is sometimes used to describe heroes and saints. Both the human hero Beowulf and his monster opponent Grendel are called aglæca. Based on this use and its etymology, some medieval studies scholars think it means something more like an uncanny and powerful outsider. I think a big part of meme horror’s appeal is that it’s still got heroes who are more or less serious characters fighting serious battles. We can respect the characters and their struggles even if we don’t fear the absurd stuff. I’ve chosen Titan TVman for my silly title because they’re the character that best embodies the “uncanny hero” aspect for me, but tbh I think that most meme horror heroes/anti-heroes seem to be these character types.
We know that enjoying horror fiction helps some people manage anxiety and fear, and comedy horror can help us laugh at fear. With the retained seriousness besides the playfulness, meme horror might be more beneficial than basic serious or comedy horror as a comfortably uncomfortable middle ground between the two. Cringe is currently having a cultural moment too, where concerns about and celebrations of being cringe are everywhere, so it might also give us a way of exploring and processing our feelings about embarrassment as well as fear.
Memes, and therefore meme horror, are very amenable to being collaboratively and spontaneously adapted and spread by regular folk. They’re a new form of folklore, essentially. They address stuff that’s relevant to the lives of regular folk, including ugly and uncomfortable things. There’s even a theory that the culture of the very online has began an era of “secondary orality” where how we spread stories on the internet replicates how we used to spread folk stories by word-of-mouth. Secondary orality is a double-edged sword, as it can build creative and supportive communities, but also spreads conspiracy theories and hate. No wonder some of us might not be having our needs fulfilled by regular horror fiction, if we’re facing the bad kind of secondary orality as well as everything else that’s going on in the world. (More allegories! An increasingly absurd and hostile world is another theme in Skibidi Toilet.)
The 1938 book Homo Ludens argued that doing things just for fun has defined features and benefits: play gives us freedom to express ourselves, it’s separate from everyday life, it allows us to construct new worlds with new rules, and it’s never compulsory or for profit. When we’re bombarded by media that’s designed to extract the maximum amount of profit from us, engaging with mainstream entertainment might sometimes feel not as playful or as voluntary. But by being a bit cringe, meme horror retains the appearance of being indie and just for fun even if it becomes obscenely popular.
So, for me, this is what Skibidi Toilet is about. It’s about new folklore playing the same role as old folklore, even if it looks like silly toilet men videos, because we’re essentially the same people as our ancestors telling monster stories around the fire.

y'all are too committed to the national sport of the hellsite, LYING. Now, I have to write an essay about goncharov and digital folklore and metamodernism and our tumblr clownery like th thirst for gay relationships, spy movies done well with morally grey characters and beautiful yearny fandom culture, JUST BECAUSE because none of us can resist the YES AND CULTURE, the horrors are real

Moby Dick (Moby Dick) "Okay, look--let's get this out of the way. I know that the whale is big. That is not an insignificant thing about whales in general and this whale in particular. It's not even an insignificant factor in nominating him today. Except, it's not the size that matters--it's what Herman Melville does with it*.
*(Sorry, the dick joke was obligatory. It should be the only one unless my love of bad puns runs away from me.)
There's a post floating out there on tumblr calling Moby Dick the OG eldritch terror. Unfortunately, we all know how the hellsite's search "function" is (exasperated but affectionate), so I'm not going to be able to link it. What I can do is pull out a few rusty tools of literary analysis to show that at his Vast heart, Moby Dick represents the terrifying insignificance of humanity in the face of the grandness and terror of the sea.
First, it's crucial to point out that the book opens with quotes about whales, including several Bible verses, some Pliny, something purported to be copied down by a ninth-century king, Shakespeare, and so on. Right out of the gate, the book connects the Whale with the idea of the mythological Leviathan. By quoting Genesis in particular, Melville creates the idea of the Whale as a beast that has existed alongside humanity since its inception. Just as the fears are ancient and have tormented humanity since prehistory, the Whale/Leviathan has represented a "dragon of the sea" that mankind cannot conquer.
Sailors who make their living killing the whales are aware that " all the other things, whether beast or vessel, that enter into the dreadful gulf of this monster’s (whale’s) mouth, are immediately lost and swallowed up" and that "[t]he great Leviathan […] maketh the seas to seethe like boiling pan." They can't escape, though, because as the extracts also make clear, the booming economy of the nineteenth century depends on whale oil for everything from healing bruises to heating rooms in the dead of winter. The sailors are therefore helpless in the face of the dangers that the Whale's sheer size escapes, but also the vast and impersonal economic machinery that reduces them to commodities to be sacrificed to the Whale's wrath, Ahab's vengeance, and the Industrial Revolution's greed. Simon Fairchild probably had a field day with this one.
I realize I'm nearly 400 words in, so in the interest of sparing people's eyes, I'll wrap up by pointing out: --There is a whole chapter devoted to the crew standing knee-deep in whale fat while they dissect a smaller whale. --There is another chapter where Ishmael rhapsodizes about the size of a whale's skeleton. --Then he goes on for another chapter about whale fossils. --And then chapter 3 in this trilogy (which began in chapter 103, btw), asks outright in the title. "Does the whale's magnitude diminish?" --Ishmael sees the sea, and by extension, the Whale, as an irresistible, almost compelling force that terrifies and awes him. This is similar to noted Vast victim Robert Kelly, who also feels a draw to the Vast. --The book closes with Ishmael as the only survivor of the Pequod, having barely escaped the whale's vortex that pulled the ship and all her crew into the depths of the ocean, floating alone on his subtextual lover's coffin for a day and night before finally being picked up by another ship."
The Kraken (Folklore) "It personally terrifies me. The Kraken is described as a massive sea monster, large enough to take down ships with ease. Here's an excerpt from it's wikipedia page.
"According to his Norwegian informants, the kraken's body measured many miles in length, and when it surfaced it seemed to cover the whole sea, and "having many heads and a number of claws". With its claws it captured its prey, which included ships, men, fish, and animals, carrying its victims back into the depths."

★ SOLAR - 23 YEARS OLD - QUEER - POLYAM - CLOSED - AUTISTIC - GNC TRANS GUY - WHITE - BRITISH - HE / IT ★
Hey there! My name's Cody, but I generally tend to go by Solar, Ray or Sunny online. That said, you can call me pretty much whatever you want. I'm not too picky. I'm a hobbyist artist, occasional writer and professional dog who's had the misfortune of being on this miserable hellsite (do people still call Tumblr that?) since 2014. I was around before then, but I didn't make an account until that point. My blog isn't strictly NSFW, but I do reblog posts with dirty humour and references to sex. So if you're a minor or someone who doesn't want to see that kind of thing? Be wary of that. Want to know more about me or about this blog? You can find more info under the cut! ✌️
The dividers in this post were made by @chocoperrito and you can find them here! ❤
Tumblr media
》 WHAT'S THIS BLOG ABOUT, DOG MAN?
I'm glad you asked! This is my main blog so it's generally just a mish mash of all sorts. Anything and everything pertaining to my interests goes here, it's a total free-for-all. That said, you can mostly expect reblogs about queer topics, political and social issues, different media that I like, shitposts and furry art. Lots and lots of furry art. I may occasionally post my own art here and possibly my own writing in the future if I feel confident enough.
》 WHAT ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?
I am, in fact, a human person with nuance so you can argue that no matter how many things I tell you that I like? None of this will even come close to conveying the full spectrum of who I am, so please keep that in mind. I'm more than my interests. That said, it doesn't mean I can't at least give you an idea of the things I enjoy so to name a few things offhandedly: I really enjoy art, writing, reading, poetry, photography, filmmaking, animation, cartoons, video games, RPGs, 3D platformers, visual novels, folk punk music, ska music, 80 and 90s visual aesthetics, bright colours, primary colours, breakfast foods, thrifting, kitsch, antiques, tacky button-ups, animatronics, toy restoration, early 2000s internet, xenofiction, medieval fantasy, lost media, queer history, TV history, film history, furry history (namely the funny animal era and 2000s era), cooking, horror movies, folklore, cryptids, musicals, storytelling, worldbuilding, history, psychology, archaeology, zoology, etymology and space!
》 WHAT MEDIA DO YOU LIKE?
I like a lot of different media and the ones I actively choose to engage with fluctuates pretty frequently, but currently the ones of note are... Pokémon, Warriors, Watership Down, Animal Crossing, The Lion King, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, Beastars, The Legend of Zelda, Bugsnax, Banjo Kazooie, Viva Pinata, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic The Hedgehog, Zero Escape, Ace Attorney, Another Code, Welcome To Nightvale, Little Shop Of Horrors, Ride The Cyclone, Starkid, Be More Chill, Heathers, Cats, Waitress, In The Heights, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Child's Play, The Gregory Horror Show, The Owl House, Steven Universe, Portal, Half Life, TF2, HLVRAI, What We Do In The Shadows, Our Flag Means Death, Interview With The Vampire, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Scott Pilgrim, Sam And Max, The Good Place, Gravity Falls, My Little Pony, Night In The Woods, Slay The Princess, Dragon Age, Fable and Good Omens! Hyperfixations are bolded, because like it or not I am autistic and that does affect which of these wretched things will get a stranglehold on my attention at any given time 👍
》 YOU'RE QUEER? WHAT ARE YOUR LABELS?
I'm a gender non-conforming trans man. I go by he/him and it/its pronouns and I mostly use masculine terms (man, dude, guy, etc) to refer to myself. That said, the latter can and does vary whenever I feel like it and I've got no intentions of trying to mirror cis men. I see myself as a man in the same way Bugs Bunny is a man, masculine in theory but pretty malleable in practice. A man but tilted a bit too much to the left so it doesn't quite fit on the gender shelf. I'm a vaguely man-shaped dog thing that's just trying to resemble a person above all else, if we're being entirely honest here. I use the labels pansexual and queer pretty interchangeably. Gender doesn't really play a part in who I'm attracted to, it's pretty irrelevant and just kind of a neat bonus more than anything. I do class myself as acchillean because of my attraction to other men but in a vague way, considering how weird my own gender is. That said? Overall I'm predominantly attracted to other queer people. I'm non-monogamous. I consider myself as polyamorous. I can comfortably exist in both monogamous and polyamorous relationships but between the two? Up to now I've found the latter is my preference. Also, I know I don't owe anyone an explanation about my identity. I'm talking about this because I'd like to (queer expression is fun to talk about yippeeee) and not because I feel obligated to. People aren't owed your life story, especially people on the internet ✌️
》 DO YOU HAVE A BYF / DNI?
Yes! You can find it here. I know some people consider these to be pretty superfluous because anyone who most BYF / DNI lists apply to probably won't be the kind of person to be courteous enough to listen to them. That said? I'm aware of that and I don't expect this to stop anyone who doesn't want to be stopped. The reason I have it here is more for the benefit of those who I will inevitably end up sharing spaces with. It's more for their reference so they can make an informed decision on whether they want to follow my blog or not and what's best for their own comfort. Think of it less as a foolproof and more as a filter.
I can and will still block anyone pretty liberally for my own comfort, whether that's because something on that list seems to apply to them or just because I don't like someone. The block button exists to be used, I'll curate my own internet experience in whatever way suits me personally and I recommend you do the same 🤷
》 WHAT ABOUT A TAGLIST?
Not yet, but I'm slowly working on it. In the meantime? Here's what you mainly need to know. You can find my talking and general shitposts under solar talks, or my art under dog draws. I do have content warning tags! I try to be conscientious and tag anything that I know is a common trigger for people (blood, gore, bones, bright colours, insects, etc) as and where I can. I format all of my content warning tags as "cw //" and then whatever the content of the post is that needs tagged. So for example, if you don't want to see insects? You can blacklist it on my blog using cw // insects and that should stop you from seeing anything with a number of legs you aren't comfortable with. This same format applies to all of my content warning tags. If there's anything more specific you need tagged? Don't be afraid to let me know. I'm happy to accommodate you wherever you need so long as it doesn't infringe upon my right to exist; If it's something that triggers you? Then it warrants being taken seriously.
》 WHO'S THE GUY IN YOUR ICON?
That would be my fursona, Circuit! He is me, I am him, I love showing him off to people so although the art may change? He's usually the face of my online pressence. Here's his current (feral, I still need to make a regular one) reference sheet that I made for him:
Tumblr media
If you're curious, the art of him I have as my Tumblr icon currently (as of February 4th 2024) was a commission I got and is drawn by Pawtastic!
》 WOW, YOU TALK A LOT.
Sure do bud. Thank you for noticing! Want to hear me talk more? Then I have some sideblogs you can check out if you feel like it. fuzzypath is my Warriors sideblog (active) funky-fella is my Bugsnax sideblog (semi-active) canid-canon is my writing sideblog (WIP, inactive) I also have a NSFW sideblog dedicated to outright hornyposting, but respectfully I'm not sharing that here in public view of minors and just flat out people I don't want to see it. If for whatever reason you'd like to see that? PM me privately to ask for it and if you're both 18+ (have your age clearly stated somewhere on your blog) and someone I trust to see it then I'll most likely give it to you!

I've worked with you quite a lot now (by my own standard at least) and can say you are an exemplary artist with a wonderful sense of style and design. Your creatues of folklore split the line between intriguingly attractive and otherworldly frightening perfectly and every last one of your women is drawn in a way that makes them feel innately loved by the artist. All in all, I'm very thankful to have found your art on this hellsite ; )

looking through hellsite-folklore makes me feel like a child in her bedroom reading through a big folklore/fairytale collection both well-known and obscure with a fanciful drawing on the cover that has a pretty border and a little index at the start with the name of each story and what page it's on all in a pretty yet still legible to young children font

hey so this is really bothering me: does anyone else remember reading a story post/concept on here where everyone knows their own method of death? to my recollection, the protag is told she is destined to die in childbirth and somehow subverts it. at one point, a fisherman dies the moment he touches water (something about doing what fulfills you anyway)
its really bugging me that i cant find it in my archive/bookmarks/etc and im no longer even certain how to search for it. think i first read it in late 2019 iirc. does it sound familiar to anyone?

This post is spoiler free except for a few minor details in the upcoming Dracula emails.
I am so glad that Abraham Van Helsing showed up as he is my blorbo of all time.
Dracula is about to dive into some stronger horror elements and Abraham Van Helsing is a strong part of that.
His character is fasinating and he joins the polycule with full force.
I think the second to last chapter of Dracula will suprise you though. No movie has ever shown it very accurately.
And I'm glad that people will start to understand that Hollywood's depictions of him as some ultra competent badass who spends every waking moment killing monsters is very off base.
He is a medical doctor who knows a lot of folklore. I would describe him as ultra competent but not in the way Hollywood does.
Also, as we all love and respect Mina in this hellsite, you will most likely be pleased with their relationship later on.
If I had a nickel for every time Abraham Van Helsing describes Mina Harker as akin to the Virgin Mary herself, i would have a lot of nickels.
He is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. I love him dearly.

I continue to be spontaneously writing bits of story using my telephone while I am lying in bed because of the word app working with Dropbox, and everyone being deeply confused and shocked when Owen casually reveals that he had every page of the Grimorum scanned/photographed and archived in the event of damage to the original makes me really stupidly happy.
Also I'm seriously thinking about Owen growing a depression beard during this story and all I keep picturing is Ulysses 31 because that remains the platonic ideal of animated beard in my mind still. Also just because it's a depression beard doesn't mean that it doesn't look fantastic and isn't incredibly well groomed because we are talking about a man who irons his jeans.
Meanwhile for hobo!Oberon (he spends the first few days of his exile in the Tombs having been picked up for vagrancy) all I have to do is picture Terrence Mann from sense8, just more rumpled and with a week's worth of stubble rather than carefully cultivated beard.
I've also been teasing the idea of the Sisters as Oberon's on literal biological children as a plot point ever since I first started working on this 25 years ago, and it makes me wonder if the show would eventually have revealed that the Puck was also his son.
I also was finally able to articulate however briefly over on the hellsite formerly known as Twitter why 'Heritage', 'Cloud Fathers', and 'Mark of the Panther' make me uncomfortable.
I think I would be fine with Oberon's Children impersonating key figures from Indigenous and West African culture but I am very not okay with Raven, Coyote, Grandmother, and Anansi actually being Children of Oberon because I don't think it's respectful.
I feel like if you applied the same idea to the Buddha or Moses and saying they were space aliens for example (like you know... Thor), it would be clear immediately that that was not respectful. They aren't the realm of just folklore or 'dead and dust' the way we think of Classical Greek and Roman religion of antiquity. Indigenous and West African cultures are living and breathing people and traditions and that's too important to disrespect, for me.
(and even Odin straddles a line I'm not totally comfortable with in Gargoyles compared to how Odin is portrayed in say American Gods where he is very clearly an anthropomorphic personification manifested in different localities based on human beliefs.
For example I was absolutely delighted when the TV series developed Mad Sweeney as a version of Lugh Samildánach as sun god and equated his spear with Gungnir because within that narrative that was fucking genius and totally worked according to the rules established by the series.)
But as a completely pedantic nerd it bugged me to see Cú Chulainn with Lugh's spear in place of his own (Gáe Bulg) because the weapons are specific and not interchangeable to me. they did however have it BOOMERANG which is the BEST PART about that spear (because boomerangs).
That's not to say I don't absolutely love Coyote in Gargoyles because I do. But the 30 years ago we didn't know what we didn't know in terms of cultural appropriation, and we know better now.
