In ancient times the Romans and Greeks used Calendula in rituals and ceremonies, and commonly used the golden variety of flowers to wear as crowns or garlands. Calendula is one of the oldest plants known to herbal medicine and is thought to have been used in Ancient Greece, Egypt, India and the Arabic empires. Calendula flowers offer a wealth of attributes, including as an eyesight restorative and a general healer of wounds. The vibrant colored flowers were often used to dye fabrics and lighten hair. The petals of the Calendula are edible and are often used in fresh salads or sprinkled over cakes for decoration. The great herbalist Nicholas Culpepper, writing in the mid-1600s, described Calendula as an herb of the sun, proclaiming that its shape and flowers are linked to the astrological sign of Leo. 2nd July 1566, death of French astrologist, physician, seer and prophet Michel de Nostre-Dam, better known as Nostradamus. Studying medicine at the University of Avignon, he was forced to leave due to an outbreak of plague, which also later claimed the lives of his wife and two children during another outbreak. From this point on he worked as an apothecary working with doctors against the plague. In 1550 he wrote his first almanac, and its success led him to be employed as an astrologer to wealthy patrons including queen consort of France, Catherine de' Medici. In 1555, Nostradamus produced the work for which he is most known to history, ‘Les Prophéties’, which still to this day is cited as predicting future events. On the evening of the 1st of July, he is reported as saying to his secretary Jean de Chavigny, "You will not find me alive at sunrise." The next morning he was reportedly found dead. On the same day in 1621, English astronomer, mathematician, and ethnographer, Thomas Harriot also died. Harriot is known to history as the first person to observe sunspots, and draw a map of the moon, both through observation using a telescope. it is claimed that Harriot’s moon map predates Galileo’s by four months.
