Guess Who's Back?

Well, dreamers, this is it. 

A huge and heartfelt thank you to the patrons who have steadfastly stuck by the show over these quiet months. Truth be told, I was bracing myself to lose most of our support during this time that we've been off the air, and that we haven't lost ground at all is incredible. Thank you so much for tiding the Hallowoods through the break and keeping the recording studio lights on and the inkwell full. 

Tomorrow, Hello From The Hallowoods returns for 30 more episodes over the summer - and not our last by far; the plan is to return to our usual Halloween season premieres this year, so you will have weeks to wait between this season and the next. The break has been vital for accomplishing work on some HFTH spinoff projects, including continued work on One Hundred Eyes In The Dark, our first tie-in novel, as well as plotting out content to come. 

Going forward, we're back to our usual - new episodes every Wednesday, new bonus stories in Patreon, new Skull Sessions rolling out every 1-2 months, and resuming our weekly Q&A streams. Thank you for waiting. It's good to be back in these woods.

begging audio drama fans, especially people who like the eye podcasts™️ (tma, wtnv, malevolent) and other people who like queer horror podcasts, to listen to Hello From The Hallowoods. it's incredible. it's written, produced and narrated all by one person, William A. Wellman, and they do an incredible job at it !

the best way I can describe hfth is a big warm hug, though sometimes the hug is a bit too tight and it might hurt a bit, but it'll loosen up again soon and be that familiar warm hug again. every episode, you are greeted by Nikignik, who will tell you about the stories of the humans, monsters and other beings who reside in the Northern Hallowoods. the cast of characters is huge and I have so much love for (almost) every single one of the characters. there's a lot of diversity and so, so much queer joy <3

season 4 starts at the end of this month, so there's still some time to catch up :] (if you do, let me know what you think !!! I would love to talk about hfth with anyone)

Which books would the Hallowoods characters read?

Happy HFTH season 4 day! I'm so excited for the new episodes, and I want to celebrate by recommending some books I think some of the main characters would love.

Diggory Graves - Unwieldy Creatures

I have a feeling that Diggory might be interested in a nonbinary Frankenstein retelling...

Percy Reed - The Spirit Bares Its Teeth

A transmasc protagonist, ghosts, a t4t love story - Percy would relate to this book so much.

Nikignik - This Is How You Lose the Time War

Even aside from the whole Bigolas Dickolas thing, I think Nikignik would really love this book. It's an epic, complicated, super emotional love story, written in a way that almost feels like poetry - I have a feeling that Nikignik would like that.

Lady Ethel Mallory - Lady Susan

It's short, it's funny, it's a classic, it's from the perspective of the villain and said villain uses the title "lady"? Lady Ethel would love this book.

Riot Maidstone - Gideon the Ninth

It's about a butch lesbian with a sword. That alone would probably convince Riot to read it, but I think she would love the story, too.

Olivier Song - Infinity Alchemist

This book is about an alchemist who is rejected by the magic school he tried so hard to get into, and one of the love interests is genderfluid - Olivier might relate to it a little too much.

Clara Martin - The Grimoire of Grave Fates

It's a murder mystery set at a magic school that moves around the world, and it's told from 18 (!) different perspectives. I think Clara would love reading about all these different types of magic and trying to solve the mystery.

Polly - Good Omens

Polly reminds me so much of Crowley sometimes - to quote this post, they're both "demons sent on a celestial audit of earth and catching more feelings than they signed up for" - so Polly would probably either love or hate Good Omens, no in-between.

Yaretzi - The Salt Grows Heavy

I can't really explain why I think Yaretzi would like this book, but she would. Something about the main character being a murderous mermaid, probably.

Mort - All Systems Red

Mort would definitely want to be friends with Murderbot.

Hector Mendoza and Jonah Duckworth - Silver in the Wood

This is my go-to "Read this if you like Our Flag Means Death" book because the main characters remind me a lot of Stede and Ed, but the book also reminds me so much of Hector and Jonah, especially with the magical sentient forest setting.

Zelda Duckworth - The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher

This book is about a 83-year-old Chosen One who has to save the world armed with nothing but gumption and knitting needles - I think Zelda would enjoy that.

Mx. Morrell - What Moves the Dead

I think a fungal horror book with a nonbinary protagonist would be perfect for Mx. Morrell.

Danielle O'Hara - Pet

Pet is about a trans girl who has to reconsider everything she's been taught and save her friend with the help of a terrifying creature - everyone should read this book, but I think Danielle would especially like it.

Spooky Podcast Recommendations

Since it's Friday the 13th, I'm going to share a few of my favorite horror podcasts! All of these are excellent podcasts that I highly recommend. The list is pretty short, so if anyone has suggestions for more horror podcasts to listen to, I'd love to hear them!

The Magnus Archives: A very well known podcast, The Magnus Archives is a horror anthology series set in the archives of The Magnus Institute, which studies and collects accounts of supernatural occurrences. Each episode features a different story, though there is overarching plot involving what goes in the Institute itself. TMA is completed with 200 episodes. The writer has also written the book 13 Storeys, and Rusty Quill has a variety of other podcasts you can listen to.

Hello From the Hallowoods: HftH is a story about a wide variety of people attempting to survive in post-apocalyptic North America. The characters vary from normal humans, to witches, to ghosts, to demons, and more. It is surprisingly comforting for a horror podcast, and has plenty of friendships and found family. The series is ongoing in its second season. The creator is currently writing a book in the same universe, and you can follow them @hellofromthehallowoods

Murray Mysteries: MM is a modern, queer adaptation of Bram Stokers Dracula (of Dracula Daily renown). It's a funny and sad story told through Mina Murray's podcast, with the help of her friends. MM is completed with 46 episodes. The creators have also announced that they have more series in the works, so you can follow them @knovesstorytelling if you want to stay updated on that!

Camp Here and There: CHnT mostly follows the daily announcements made by the camp nurse at a very strange camp. The podcast is somewhat similar to Welcome to Nightvale in the way strange and creepy events at the camp are often taken in stride. In addition to the day to day events of the camp there is overarching plot involving the various members of camp staff and a mysterious individual in a pink elephant mask... Currently on hiatus between season one and two.

The Children of Room 56: This is a fairly new podcast, with only a few episodes out, but it's already very intriguing. It follows a group of high-schoolers trying to cope with the disappearance of their friend, Chip Romero. Some are attempting to locate him, while others are grieving his presumed death. The story is set in a Nightvale/CHnT-esque town, with mystery and excellent horror. This series is ongoing. You can follow them @room56pod

I'm listening to the first few episodes of HFTH again with my friend and was overtaken with the desire to create this.

The ambiguous Rusty Quill tweets are like torture designed specially for me, who physically cannot wait to know things. That said, my theories are:

1) book/s of all the statements (possibly some other cool merch item)

or

2) some kind of one off Halloween bonus episode, possibly a crossover with hfth considering they quote tweeted the rq tweet with eyes, or just something bonus content related

It’s possible the eyes are unrelated to tma specifically but like. Rusty quill know exactly what they’re doing by tweeting them I highly doubt they’d do it without any self awareness if it wasn’t tma related. Also any large project like a whole new tma related podcast seems highly highly unlikely to me BUT ppl from rq were heavily hyping this up so who knows

Audio Drama Sunday - 8th October ✨

Happy Audio Drama Sunday! I feel like we’re really in spooky season this week with all the horrors on offer from the audio drama community!!

Big old spoilers below!

🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (136) I looove when stories show escalating tension at the heart of the story through environmental change elsewhere!! And neither Danielle nor Clem knowing if the shaking was normal hurt my heart a little. They’re babies, your honour! I can’t wait for Danielle and Nikignik to chat again 🤞

HFTH does action SO well and the scene with Mort, Creep and Cindy was just masterful. I was cycling in to work but mentally I was right there. I really hope that Cindy’s plan works - I’ll not get into the ethics of utilitarianism here, but I’ll be so sad if her death isn’t ‘worth it’.

But HELL YEAH, let’s get Ralph back! Time to be useful, my man! Don’t fuck it up!

It’s safe to say that I didn’t have ‘Grug saving Diggory from the Phantom Radio Station’ on my end of S3 bingo. It is very interesting to me that they think their purpose is to die. I think it’s actually vital that the grave digger isn’t dead, but maybe that’s just me?

This final arc is such a white knuckle ride!! I can’t wait to see what happens next!

So for my one class, we have an assignment that stretches through the whole semester, where we have to make a drawing a week to our own chosen theme for this series. For this semester I choose the given episode themes from Hallo From The Hallowoods and how I can relate them to myself and draw them, plus a line or something that touched or spoke to me. (I will be adding red as a highlight color but I still need to get a fitting pen, bare with me here.)

This weeks theme is Prints and I’ve decided to draw all the poster and prints o got for my birthday and trying to rehang them again after they all fell off. (It features my original hfth illustration as well)
