Homebrew Race: The Moulds!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello! With the latest trailer for “Hollow Knight: Silksong” fresh in our minds, my little brothers and I have given ourselves the challenge to try to adapt every race from Team Cherry’s original “Hollow Knight” game into playable Race for D&D5E! (Save for Wyrms because we don’t know enough about them to try to canonize anything...)
Leading the charge is one that is of GREAT interest to me and that I don’t see discussed that often, the Pale King’s half-eldritch-half-science servants, The Moulds! Let me know what you all think and expect more as my brothers and I continue to develop them!
(I did this one by myself as my brothers are handling their own races at the moment, so NO I didn’t forget to credit them!)
And special thanks to @homebrew-a-la-traumaverse for showing me how to make it look good here!

inktober day 11!! drew a kingsmould, standing guard at the entrance to the white palace! i sure hope the monarch whose protection is this fella's sole purpose hasn't been deceased on his throne for decades or anything!! :D
these goobers have such a cool design, but they're a bit tough to draw, especially in perspective (albeit very slight). still a fun time, although lighting was sorta tricky for this one, since light just sorta... exists in the white palace :)

Hunter's Journal #135 <Kingsmould>

i have recently decided that hk got bigger from killing a bunch of kingsmoulds and that is why the rest of the vessels are so small
[this has nothing to do with any of your aus]
that is an interesting way to explain it! it would make sense that they'd fight them as a form of training, and i could see it as them "absorbing" the void from the kingsmould in order to grow
personally, i like to think that, since the vessels are void beings, the proximity to the abyss plays a big role in how fast and how much they can grow. they all have the potential to reach their adult height, though the full size varies depending on other factors (like, for example, how well they were cared for, or whether they share more traits with their father or their mother, like i mentioned under my au designs)
thk/holly grew up in the ancient basin where the palace was, and they inherited many traits from the white lady, so that is why they are the tallest of the known vessels. their upbringing also contributed - even if they were, unfortunately, not seen as an actual child, they were still provided with everything necessary for fast and healthy growth. it's a combination of factors that makes it very unlikely for any other vessel to reach their impressive height
broken vessel/lost kin i imagine hatched later and are thus younger than thk, but they stayed in the basin following their escape from the birthplace. consequently, they were the second tallest at the moment of their death. although, if they were able to fully grow, they would still be shorter than thk due to the fact that they inherited more from their father
ghost spent most of their life far away from hallownest, and that stunted their growth. on top of that, they were unlucky in the gene lottery and, similarly to hornet, inherited their father's short height. even if they were raised in the palace alongside thk, they would still be noticeably shorter than them
though all of this raises the question: how many grown up vessels are there that we don't know of? i would say not many, though i imagine some of the dead vessels in the abyss are larger than their siblings, likely as a result of avoiding the climb and surviving for a bit longer before perishing. perhaps some of them managed to escape in that state, hallownest is massive, there ought to be a few vessels out there that survived. my oc, moss, would be one of them, since they were lucky enough to be found and raised by sheo. perhaps there are other vessels who shared their luck, maybe some of them left hallownest altogether, though that would certainly impact their growth just like it did to ghost
i know you said your ask has nothing to do with my au, but since you're visiting my house, i might as well infodump about it hahaha i hope you don't mind. i do really like your idea, though! i could absolutely see that as another of the factors that allowed thk to grow this much. i just like to think of other possibilities that would also explain the rest of the known vessels

To those of you following my Hallowed Rainforest AU, I’d like you to meet Pale Pebbles, the king of the Hallowed Rainforest.
As you might have guessed, his character is a combination of PK from HK and 5p from RW. Although our protagonists never canonically meet him while he’s alive, he still plays an important role in the AU’s story.
Tumblr media
Pale Pebbles is a higher being who initially arrived at the rainforest with his can from the eastern sea, alongside his sister Looks to the Rain (whom I will talk about another time.) This was back when the rainforest was still under the rule of the Radiant Light (not to be confused with the Spirit Tree).
After his arrival he worked in collaboration with the Spirit Tree to banish the Radiant Light and build a kingdom out of the rainforest, which he dubbed the Hallowed Rainforest. The inhabitants of the Rainforest were already living in a somewhat primitive society, but Pale Pebbles invented college granted them more complex, higher thought and society once he began to establish his kingdom.
As his kingdom grew, Pale Pebbles began experimenting with the void which came from the void sea deep below the Rainforest, in order to find a way for his people to escape the cycles. He created void constructs, such as the Kingsmoulds, and hunter-variants: more powerful, void-infused versions of existing creatures.
Of course, as we all know, eventually the infection began to threaten the kingdom, which causes Pale Pebbles to panic and make several poor choices, like throwing babies into the void sea and ignoring his sister. I’ll save the details of The Hollow Knight for another time.
The can is not pictured here, but think of it as PK’s giant wyrm corpse but mechanical. A giant, mobile mecha-wyrm super computer. Pale Pebbles has a palace, but the can is where he does most of his work, so he keeps it around and maintains it during his reign. His puppet (as seen above) can detach itself and travel outside the can, usually to make public appearances or visit the Spirit Tree.
Also, yeah he’s still married to a tree in this AU. But he didn’t have babies with the tree cause he’s a robot! Not biological babies anyway.

If you're amenable to more rando HK questions, what would the Pale King, White Lady, etc. think if they had met/discovered the Collector? Void thing that absolutely has a mind.
In all honesty, I think that the Collector helped to wrongly convince them that Void inherently does NOT have a mind, and that whatever actions it takes are the result of external stimuli rather than innate awareness. For example, the most logical explaination would be that the Collector is a kingsmould reject that was been given too much mind during the moulding process, resulting in an animated being that followed its orders, but did so in an out-of-control fashion. That would indicate that less Soul was required in the animating process than initially thought so that the Kingsmoulds would not be locked into that loop of 'protect-> enhance protection protocol -> do not rest protect protect protect', and would only activate if the stimulus was there. Any anomolous behavior could and would have been chalked up to a mistake on the Pale King's part rather than the idea of the Void naturally emulating a living being, considering the fact that he was the one who made it, came up with the glyphwards to program and activate it, and did so with Soul (which is his aspect, and he in turn is tied to Mind). Likely what happened is that the Collector is merely one facet of a once-aware being that was reactivated and reprogrammed when shaped to the mould, but that conclusion would not have been drawn without the knowledge that we have, which is that the Void had a history of being worshipped as a god and that the Pale Beings were solidly wrong in their assumption of it being the antithesis to Life and Mind.
So essentially, I believe that the Collector merely helped to cement an incorrect hypothesis by acting erratically, as the Pale King and White Lady most likely would have attributed such oddities to be tied to how the void itself was animated rather than consider that some of its fragmented nature was shining through. The Collector only having one goal and one perceived emotion doesn't help either.
(And tbh I personally don't believe that the Collector would count as having a true sense of awareness, as its literally got a one-track mind and only one visible emotion. Sure, the thoughts tied to its objective are complex, but its still not much of a mind, more a facet or primitive start to one.)

Extremely bad HK mod idea
Trial of The Pain.
It’s Path of Pain, but after you complete it, you don’t fight two Kingsmoulds, you drop down into the Colosseum arena and are forced to fight through all three trials in a row, in one go.
