“no, it’s better!” tom sat beside you and showed you his phone. “why didn’t you tell me you had a youtube channel?” on his phone screen was your review of the ballad of songbirds and snakes, which had become a very popular video over the past couple of days.
you hid your face with a pillow and groaned. “don’t remind me. i just wanted to talk about my books and my family didn’t care. don’t watch it! it’s embarrassing!”
“i think it’s cute. aw look, your dog made a cameo!” he pointed at your old dog you used to have that walked into the frame.
“indi! no, come sit right here. oh . . . and she’s walking away. okay, anyways.” your younger self said in the video
“indi? why Indi?” tom asked you even though you were still hiding from embarrassment.
“after indiana jones. my dad and i loved those movies and he gifted me indi as a birthday present.” you confessed.
“love, don’t be embarrassed. i think it’s cute that you manifested your life according to the comments on instagram,” tom paused the video then cuddled up to you. “i won’t watch it if you don’t want me to.”
“it’s fine, i just didn’t think anyone would find it. we can watch it together.” you uncovered yourself and sat down properly to watch the video with tom. before he pressed the play button and together you watch your younger self review the book.
“i’ve read all the hunger games books at least four times and this one did not disappoint. but i do hope whoever ends up being cast as young snow is someone hot. i’m sorry it’s the rules! and they will be my boyfriend, i’m calling dibs.”
tom smirked at you. “if only younger you could see you now.”

As I was leaving a screening of Barbie amidst a sea of elated fans, I overheard someone saying, “That was so much better than I thought it would be.” Honestly, I didn’t share the sentiment. That’s because I was certain it would be great the second that I learned it was Greta Gerwig’s next project. A wonderful actor and writer, Gerwig eventually directed her first film Lady Bird in 2017 followed by Little Women in 2019, both extraordinary works and two of the best reviewed movies of the last decade. I wasn’t excited for Barbie; I was excited for Gerwig’s third feature.
That feature is half of the ‘Barbenheimer’ cultural phenomenon. Never in a million years would I have pictured Gerwig, the de facto Queen of Indie Films, at the center of two blockbusters vying for box office dominance…in the same week! What’s more, her film is actually winning the financial battle against Oppenheimer, the second film in that portmanteau whose director, Christopher Nolan, churns out blockbusters like Mattel churns out plastic dolls.
One such doll, Barbie, is the star of this film and an American institution launched in 1959 whose instantly recognizable brand floods the hallways of countless stores. Some might view the film as cynical commercialism—this two-hour showcase definitely won’t hurt sales—but, that opinion is reductive. The opening scene alone defies expectations and reminds us of the exceptional talent behind the camera, including co-writer Noah Baumbach, who’s even more ‘indie’ than Gerwig, and both her creative and romantic partner.

You may not know the people behind the camera, but you do know the star in front of it. Possessing otherworldly beauty (narrator Helen Mirren has a killer line about this) and exceptional acting skills, Margot Robbie’s casting is a no-brainer, which is ironic considering how inclusive the cast is; dozens of Barbies inhabit Barbieland, composed of various races, body types and gender identities. That goes for the Kens as well. But, Robbie plays Stereotypical Barbie, a crucial aspect of the story that the film makers stress often, mainly to highlight a standard that impressionable, vulnerable young people experience so often.
And so, the perfect Barbie played by the perfect actor lives a perfect life in a hot pink utopian society where the Barbies hold all positions of power while the Kens, including Beach Ken (a priceless Ryan Gosling), chill at the beach and try, unsuccessfully, to woo the ladies. The nonchalance of Barbie’s rebuff of Ken speaks volumes about this social hierarchy. Robbie’s Barbie has a daily routine, executed as if a child were controlling her, rituals that include sipping from an empty cup and floating from bedroom to driveway because what child would walk her doll down every stair?
This occurs on a meticulously constructed set, realized by designers Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer. Built on a solid foundation of whimsy and charm, this community—whose geographic and temporal relationship with the ‘real world’ wisely is left ambiguous—is the product of stunning practical effects in place of tempting CGI. Like in recent films, interestingly, such as Beau is Afraid and Asteroid City, the set resembles a colourful diorama, at once fantastical and tactile. It’s a world of make-believe you can otherwise almost reach out and touch, just like the toys that inspired it.

But toys don’t have sudden preoccupations with mortality like Barbie does during a dance number, handled with perfect comedic timing by Robbie. She’s also horrified by newly flat feet and patches of cellulite. It’s around this point when the story shows it has more on its mind than just brand promotion. That trend continues as Barbie consults Weird Barbie (the delightfully weird Kate McKinnon) who’s an outcast yet the wisest of them all. Lurching about, contorting herself and giving those big-eyed, alien-like looks that McKinnon has mastered, she tells Barbie to find the girl who’s controlling her in the real world.
With Ken stowing away in Barbie’s convertible, the two arrive in Los Angeles’s Venice Beach, enveloped in neon spandex. There’re some standard fish-out-of-water moments played for laughs, sure, but Gerwig and Baumbach also use this framework to explore a myriad of social issues with the same amount of fervor used to entertain. After being ogled relentlessly at the beach, Barbie is cat-called by some construction workers, but that cliché is subverted as Barbie simply and unexpectedly explains that she lacks genitalia. It’s brilliant.
As with Gerwig’s previous films, it’s difficult to pin down a specific message; she explores numerous issues and isn’t one to tie things up in a neat little package. The stories have feminist underpinnings, but they’re never reduced to simple dichotomies like ‘women are good/men are evil’. Yes, men are portrayed as misogynists occasionally or embody corporate greed in the case of the idiotic Mattel executives led by a pompous Will Ferrell as the CEO. We also see the dangers of an impressionable air head like Ken learning of the patriarchy and introducing its flaws to Barbieland, hopefully bringing attention to how insufferable bro culture can be. Yet, Gerwig’s brand of feminism is sympathetic to male struggles too, especially toward the end, even if much of their behaviour is rightly judged.
Mattel isn’t even immune from judgment; the writers get away with a surprising amount aimed at the company, specifically regarding their toys’ negative influence on body image and self- esteem. For a film maker to resist the pressures of both studio executives and the heads of the represented brand, especially with the huge stakes of a blockbuster production, is truly remarkable and a testament to the audacity of Gerwig who’s unwilling to sacrifice her artistic integrity. Mattel also deserves some credit for acknowledging their shortcomings and vowing to do better. Everyone wins here.

That includes the audience, most importantly. Not only are we treated to hilarious, candy-coloured entertainment, but we’re given a smart film for adults that kids will also enjoy and whose insight will benefit both. It challenges corporate power, the patriarchy, beauty standards and stereotypes while promoting inclusion, autonomy and self-confidence, mostly in creative and entertaining ways though, occasionally, unlike Gerwig’s previous films, a bit too overtly if not altogether preachy. America Ferrera, with a soulful and honest performance as the Mattel employee Gloria, gives a tirade about society’s ridiculous expectations of women; it’s hard to refute her argument, but the delivery feels too familiar in this otherwise unique experience.
It’s an experience that relies heavily on its two leads, both marvellous. Gosling eschews his usual dead-eyed intensity for a relaxed turn as a lovable nitwit and does so effortlessly (no offence). It’s Robbie’s (Barbie) world, however, and we’re all just accessories. The roll is deceptively complex, requiring an actor with more than just beauty to be at once effervescent and existentially preoccupied. Both her performance and the story are capped off with one final word that recalls a line (also the final one) by Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut, appropriate considering Barbie begins with an explicit reference to another Stanley Kubrick masterpiece. It’s a word that Robbie announces with aplomb when it would otherwise be whispered with embarrassment; a word she wields like a weapon, charging forward into a new life in the name of unapologetic femininity.

Much Ado About MOANA

Say it ain't so!
Walt Disney Pictures is working on a live-action "reimagining" of MOANA that will involve Dwayne Johnson himself, who of course voiced Maui in the original animated feature directed by Ron Clements and John Musker for Walt Disney Animation Studios and released in 2016.
As of now, the movie has three forthcoming extensions: This project, a land at Epcot in Walt Disney World, and an animated series being produced at WDAS (namely its recently-opened Vancouver unit) for Disney+.
I used to grouse to the moon and back about how much I detested much of these particular remakes and reimaginings of Disney's animated features and characters. You know, the ones made in the aftermath of Tim Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND throughout the 2010s, and even into now. I used to see them as something of a threat to animation's reputation, and they all came at us fast! MALEFICENT in 2014, CINDERELLA in 2015, THE JUNGLE BOOK (a largely CGI movie with one live actor and maybe like, 5 real-life plants) and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS in 2016, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST in 2017, and a five-finger-punch of DUMBO, ALADDIN, THE LION KING, a MALEFICENT sequel, and LADY AND THE TRAMP in 2019... And then MULAN in 2020, CRUELLA in 2021, and PINOCCHIO this past year. Mixed in with these movies were a genuine new take on hybrid film PETE'S DRAGON and a legacy sequel to MARY POPPINS, MARY POPPINS RETURNS. Even Burton's ALICE, which got this whole ball rolling, was pretty much its own thing, ditto the 2016 sequel.
On the horizon? PETER PAN & WENDY, THE LITTLE MERMAID, SNOW WHITE, MUFASA: THE LION KING, BAMBI, THE SWORD IN THE STONE, a JUNGLE BOOK sequel, THE ARISTOCATS, ROBIN HOOD, THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN (which the 1985 animated feature THE BLACK CAULDRON was adapted from), THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, HERCULES, and LILO & STITCH. Now MOANA joins the ranks, the first all-CG animated Disney film to get the "live-action" treatment.
That's a ton of remakes in the span of almost 10 years, if we peg the actual start of this trend with 2014's MALEFICENT.
I think I've only seen... ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and THE JUNGLE BOOK, in full. I refused to watch the others. Back then it was out of protest and me just genuinely not being interested, nowadays? It's just the latter. These things aren't for me, and that's okay I guess. They haven't erased animation, nor did other recent "realistic" takes on animated classics, such as the 2017 GHOST IN THE SHELL movie with Scarlett Johansson. It hit me one day at my cinema job when THE LION KING was released. The Cinemark that I work at used to have a cart for movie merchandise, including things like T-shirts and Funko Pops and such. Most of the merchandise for the remakes that came out that year? Were for the animated originals... (I use the word loosely, but... You know what I mean!) I'd say it was an 85/15 ratio. Some stuff for the new remake, but mostly stuff for the classic animated movies that inspired them... It hit me... These are just over-glorified theatrical re-releases of the animated classics, made to move some merch and stuff at your local Hot Topic. It's kind of a weird transition from the way Disney used to keep their films in the public eye, whether it was a re-release cycle from the 1940s up until the mid-1990s, or their video releases being available for a limited time before being retired to the infamous "Disney Vault" (a ruthless marketing strategy thankfully put to rest with the arrival of Disney+ in 2019).
But in 2017-ish, I remember just being so goddamn grumpy about these things. Made worse by various directors, actors, and producers involved with the remakes making disparaging remarks about the classic movies for being... Well... **Animated**. Imagine that! The director of live-action BEAUTY AND THE BEAST declared that filming that story with real people gave it layers of psychological depth and nuance or some such bullshit. An actor on ALADDIN said almost verbatim the same exact thing. Disney stressed that their LION KING remake wasn't animated, even though the entire thing except a single shot was computer generated and "animated"! Then of course, several folks involved with the remakes making up nonsense about the princesses and heroines in the originals. We're seeing that now, even, with THE LITTLE MERMAID. Though these particular remarks about classic Disney heroines are nothing new, they remain nonetheless a bit irritating and proof that media literacy is lacking in many people. Then again, we do live in a world where people constantly parrot nonsense like "Batman is a rich guy who beats up poor people" and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is about being bullied until you're useful to your bullies."
Some people just don't pay attention to what they watch, do they?
But really, the remakes come, make a lot of noise, often times make a crapton of money at the box office... And then they just... Disappear. Like, it was insisted that BEAUTY AND THE BEAST 2017 fixed the plot holes of the 1991 movie and was "darker", more "adult", whatever- Uhhh, I don't really feel its presence anymore, whereas the 1991 animated movie directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale? Still here, still beloved, still holds up. I guess you could not outmode the dumb ol' kiddie cartoon, now could you? All that "darker" and "more psychology" talk is gimmicks at best, and most folks just kinda watch 'em because they saw the originals... and then that's it. It's a movie, it's a thing, it exists. You got what was on the tin: It's [insert Disney movie here], all over again!
This all being said... Now the CG movies are fair game, and possibly Pixar's some time in the future. It ain't just the 2D movies they're going after anymore. Look at Universal, they're readying a HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON live-action movie for 2025 with Dean DeBlois himself - director of all three of the animated DreamWorks HTTYD movies - at the helm! It's either going to be a straight-up live-action version of the DreamWorks adaptation released back in 2010, or it's going to be a whole new take on Cressida Cowell's book series. I hope it's the latter, honestly, then I might give it my attention.
To this day, many rightfully concerned folks still feel that these live-action/photorealistic remakes insult pure animation. Pure animation as in, animation that KNOWS it's animated. Straight-up cartoon or abstract. That Hollywood sees animated movies as but a "stepping stone" to superior live-action, but really... What I see is this... Money. People love an animated movie or show? Money. How many different coats of paint can we put on the car?
Some are asking... Why not just a MOANA sequel?
The weird thing about that is, Ron Clements and John Musker left Disney Animation. They were last seen developing a METAL MEN movie for Warner Animation Group. Of course, the directors being off on a new adventure doesn't mean anything in capitalism, Disney could plow ahead with a MOANA sequel if they wanted to. But they choose not to at the moment, only this and a D+ series. Kind of keeping in line with a history of not really making sequels in-house, and the days of outsourced direct-to-video fare has been loooooong over. (The remakes are often compared to the DTV sequels of the '90s and '00s, and for good reason. They're little more than brand extensions, and you can ex 'em out of the equation if you so choose to do so. Disney EU or Disney "Elseworlds" if you will...)
But what's actually seemingly upsetting is that... In the past few months, on the year of Disney's 100th anniversary... Most of the movie announcements have been nothing but continuations and brand extensions. They also serve as a nice distraction from needless layoffs, but yes... The big announcements have been things like TOY STORY 5, FROZEN III, ZOOTOPIA 2, Live-Action MOANA, etc. etc.
However, one ought to look closer. In-between all the franchisey stuff and synergetic things, there's still original movies being made... Like, there's not only 20th Century Studios continuing to make new live-action movies that aren't remakes or re-dos or new adaptations of books (y'all seen THE MENU and BARBARIAN last year? Great stuff! Highly recommended.), but you still have Pixar. From March 2020 to March 2022? Four straight original animated movies: ONWARD, SOUL, LUCA, TURNING RED. After spin-off LIGHTYEAR, we're getting ELEMENTAL in two months, ELIO in spring 2024, and presumably many more on the horizon.
Oh, but ELEMENTAL looks "mid", you say? "A parody of Pixar"? Or whatever else is being mindlessly parroted at the moment? Whatever, I don't know what to say to that, but like it or not, a movie like ELEMENTAL is the rare original movie from Disney, a small island in a sea of remakes, Marvel, and Star Wars. Ditto ELIO, and again, whatever is in the works after that that isn't a sequel.
And of course, Walt Disney Animation Studios, who have all but abandoned literary adaptations outside of public domain fairy tales, keeps up with original stuff, too. After releasing no new movies in 2017, two back-to-back sequels from 2018-2019 and taking 2020 off due to COVID-19 complications, they hit us with RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, ENCANTO, and STRANGE WORLD. Next up is WISH, also an original story, despite the weird way it was presented and reported on at D23. Whatever releases after that, I do not know, but FROZEN III and ZOOTOPIA 2 aren't the only things in development there. Plus, they have partnered with Nigerian upstart studio Kugali to make an original show for Disney+ called IWAJU.
Much like the reception ELEMENTAL is getting online, a movie that isn't even out yet, a lot of the recent WDAS output and what's next is just being written off... But it's all there, it's original, it's a mere morsel of something coming out of the company that seems to be all about them brands. I'm not blaming audiences specifically for, say, STRANGE WORLD's epic floppage this past holiday season, buuuuut- Those numbers are looked at, and they possibly bring about consequences.
I do get the worries, though. Under former CEO Bob Chapek, we saw Pixar's originals post-ONWARD all go straight to streaming while franchise entry LIGHTYEAR hit the big screen... and lost money. WDAS movies had a hard time, too. RAYA did a day-and-date thing with Disney+ before most of the vaccine rollout, ENCANTO dealt with Delta and Omicron before being a huge hit at home, STRANGE WORLD was straight up left for dead after testing very poorly.
With Bob Iger back in charge, Chapek's strong pivot to streaming is being reversed, as it's being realized that streaming is not the be-all end-all of the movie world. And sharp eyes knew it never would be, either, but you know how things go in capitalism: New thing shows up, abandon everything for the new thing! Disaster! Hey, that's how hand-drawn animated features prematurely got the boot circa 2001. Anyways- Yes, Iger rearranged a lot of things, and now the release strategies and marketing campaigns are back in the hands of the studios and creatives, and I'm pretty sure that there's an effort, a commitment to make ELEMENTAL the first Pixar box office success in four years. That's right, the last Pixar movie to make its money back at the box office was... TOY STORY 4... Back in 2019... And you wonder why a fifth one was greenlit?
I'd imagine Iger saw how Chapek and co mandated Pixar to send TURNING RED straight to streaming, and knew what to do from there. Ditto how, on the WDAS front, STRANGE WORLD was just straight up abandoned. TURNING RED probably would've made ENCANTO or BAD GUYS numbers at best, which wouldn't have been enough for its hefty budget (Pixar needs to stop overspending on these things), but I wonder what's in store for ELEMENTAL. Few animated movies post-2020 have passed the $100m threshold domestically, and I feel that is due to how many trips to the movies families can afford a year. (Say the line, Kyle: In 2014, statistics showed that the average American family goes to the movies four times a y-) It's opening amidst a ton of blockbusters and other animated family movies, including Disney's own LITTLE MERMAID, and the fifth INDIANA JONES movie. Maybe movies should just be more affordable? And theaters, better places to sit down and see a movie? I can see why many just don't go anymore, again, having worked at a theater for 7 1/2 years (and ready to move on to something better).
Or better yet, Pixar and WDAS need not spend more than $150m on the movies that they make. DreamWorks, Illumination, Sony, et al. put out dynamic-looking movies that are rewriting the CG animation book for way less, WDAS and Pixar should probably consider that. Leave the tech-flexing to things like that LION KING remake and prequel, let their animated movies experiment and have fun again. But even movies they don't seem to be flexing tech cost so much. Why, though? I know in California, these things are expensive, but DreamWorks is based out of California, too. I guess that Moonray software they themselves created and other solutions have gotten their movies to cost less than $100m each time out. Well, WDAS opened their Vancouver unit, so maybe they can up them to feature status? Like they did with the defunct Florida unit way back when? Split the effort with Vancouver, lower the cost? I dunno, just spit-balling here.
Basically, I don't want ELEMENTAL and WISH to come up short at the box office. Or any of the original stuff coming out, period. Again, WDAS, Pixar, and 20th Century/Searchlight are like Disney's last outlets for that kind of stuff on the movie end of things. 20th is fine and good, because in small-scale live-action, most of the time the studios know how to be smart with budgets. $150m budgets make the average WDAS and Pixar movie a risk, that they have to get on the stage and essentially perform like a Marvel movie just to break even! That's a lot to ask of an original animated movie! And not even the WDAS name nor the Pixar name can guarantee people will show up, both have had their fair share of flops. And now, judging by how ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA is doing, the Marvel name ain't a guarantee anymore either. Ditto Star Wars, remember how SOLO just sorta existed at the box office and lost a lot of money? TV and elsewhere is a different story, of course, there's plenty of original stuff to choose from there.
MOANA Live-Action is likely being made to fund the fun cool stuff, much in the same way sequels help fund originals. They... Pay the bills, shall we say.
In other words, I'm just indifferent. Whatever. Tell me more about the original stuff coming out, and you'll have my ear.

i can't see him as the type to watch the typical romance kdramas as entertainment. but if they're for research purposes (as supplements to his so-called study in introduction to the psychology of love and attraction), sure (courtesy of overhearing the ladies in the workplace talking about an actor from the latest kdrama, of course)!
he's the kind to watch kdramas related to crime, like city hunter (2011) and defendant (2017)
if he watches legal dramas, he really scrutinises everything and gets lowkey triggered when the wrong articles and such are used
however, if he's watching kdramas for romance research purposes, he gets recommendations from celestine and she directs him to the super cheesy ones, like he's beautiful (2009) and weightlifting fairy kim bokjoo (2016)
as mockingbird, he will rate and review all the kdramas he's watched. he personally hates love alarm (2019-2021) because he thinks the plot doesn't make sense at all.

okay but here's a take: he watches the old kdramas. i'm talking about those from the early 2010s.
he watches them just to make fun of everything as well. he's super critical about everything and psychoanalyses everything, the smartass.
another hot take: he watches the period kdramas from the early 2010s. i'm talking about dong yi (2010), the moon embraces the sun (2012), and faith (2012). he likes the old film aesthetics (as compared to kdramas from 2019 onwards) and how dramatic everything is, how everyone retaliates by screaming and the most dramatic scenes of the empress dowager fainting.
he will never tell anyone about his kdrama addiction though, unless you're his special someone

this guy will not publicly admit it (unless it's with close friends like rosa) but he's into the high school romance dramas! i'm talking about those slowburn types with a dense female lead and two male leads who are super obvious about their feelings.
he most likely watches those from the 2010s (as what i call, the kdrama prime where there's really good plots), like heartstrings (2011), the heirs (2013), and sassy go go (2015)
he also watches the sad ones when he's in his sad emo times. his favourite sad series is the endless love series (2000-2006), because someone in each season is always dying, and he relates to it on a spiritual level.
he probably got into the kdrama kick because of rosa. before luke left, they watched kdramas together every saturday night. he didn't watch kdramas on any saturday night because he felt guilty about not watching them with rosa. so when he returned to stellis, they resumed their kdrama saturday nights!

romcom queen! anything that's funny and full of cute romance is up her alley!
her personal favourites are extraordinary you (2019), a love so beautiful (2020), and business proposal (2022).
she also likes the ones with some action, thriller, and suspense elements to it (which run alongside the main romance theme), like strong woman do bongsoon (2017) and hotel del luna (2019).
when luke left, she didn't even want to do kdrama saturday night. like luke, she felt guilty watching kdramas on her own on saturday night without him, so she spent those eight years not watching kdramas on saturday night. so when he returned, she made sure to go over to his apartment (or he would go over to hers when she's too swamped up with work) to watch whatever new kdrama that's trending.
she definitely had a nxx sleepover with the boys and watched kdramas with them hehe

first and foremost, this guy is capable and will binge one kdrama season in one night. he is not above sacrificing his (already limited hours of) sleep to do so. (he will only do this if he thinks that it is worth bingeing.)
he's also the type to watch whatever kdrama(s) his crush/s/o watches or likes just to have a conversation
he likes watching the dramatic ones with wrist grabs, multiple close-ups of kiss scenes, and the intense yelling. he also thinks those cliché scenes with the rich mom telling the poor female lead to break up with her son are lame (he will actually yell "boo!" and frown at the screen).
he also does a lot of running commentary. this man canNOT shut up.
his favourites are moon lovers: scarlet heart ryeo (2016), love alarm (2019-2021), and a love so beautiful (2020). he's still waiting for a moon lovers: scarlet heart ryeo s2 and will not accept the ending of the series as the final ending.
what's wrong with secretary kim? (2018) has a special place in his heart because he and giann watched it repeatedly when he was younger
— AND SO, THE NXX "TEAM-BUILDING" SLEEPOVER WENT SOMETHING LIKE THIS:
the sleepover was suggested by rosa (under the guise of a team-building exercise), because she thought they could all use an evening to spend time with one another and get to know each other better! they were all awkward about the idea at first, but it doesn't take much convincing from rosa for them to agree to it (she brought up the kdramas).
they went to artem's house because this guy has a fancy in-house movie setup and they connected marius' ipad to the projector because he has a netflix account (which luke says "needs to be abused")
all the boys let rosa to pick their kdrama for the night and rosa flat-out refused, because that's not fair to the others and they should all have an equal chance of picking a kdrama to watch.
they tried to convince her that it's fine, she can pick something out and they're all cool with it, but rosa went full attorney mode and fought with them (verbally) and managed to convince them that they will all pick one out together. that! is! all!
marius originally suggested love alarm, but artem was against it, and was going to fight marius about how it would waste everyone's time but rosa managed to stop them before there was going to be ww3
vyn suggested empress ki, but luke argued that it would take forever to watch since it was 50+ episodes long and they had, at best, 10 hours to spare (if they didn't sleep). they still wouldn't get past 20 episodes if they watched it all at 2x speed
multiple arguments and one exhaused rosa later, she rubbed her temples and halted the debate. a lightbulb popped over her head as she said, "okay boys, what about he is psychometric?"
they agreed and rosa searched the kdrama up, then they all settled down on the couch to watch it
everyone was quiet (save for the sounds of chewing of fruit (prepared by artem)). however, marius kept running his mouth off (as usual) and luke had to grab a pillow to smack it over his head and say, "marius, keep it down! we're all trying to watch this and you're breaking our focus."
begrudgingly, marius snatched the pillow away and hugged it to his chest as he pursed his lips into a straight line to keep his comments to a minimum
when it hit 10pm (they were on episode 2), vyn was out like a light. artem had blankets prepared and rosa carefully draped it over their resident sleeping beauty.
at 11pm (halfway through episode 3), artem fell asleep, leaning on vyn just slightly. rosa adjusted the blankets so that both of them were covered.
at around 1am (near the end of episode 5), marius fell asleep (he had been working late the past few nights and had been running on a couple of hours' worth of sleep) on luke's shoulder, and rosa moved to grab a blanket for him
rosa lasted another hour and fell asleep at 2am (during episode 6). carefully, luke shifted marius so he could grab a blanket to drape it over her before switching marius' ipad and the projector off. he moved rosa's head so that her head would rest on his shoulder before he went to sleep as well.
all in all, a successful team-building sleepover!

And ofc he agreed because she is his little princess
She also fell into the vine decor trend so that’s there

Like currently, that is her number one goal in life

She really really thinks pink is her colour so most things in her room coordinate with that general colour scheme

But she thinks it’s okay because her parents hire a house cleaner once a week
She has one of those cool vanities with the Hollywood lights
Because she BEGGED for one for her 12th birthday
she wants to become the internet’s next favourite beauty guru so she hopped right on the “healthy water trend”
So there’s a lil tumbler on her nightstand
She films grwm vlogs and films days in her life
I fully believe that she is one of those girls that cover themselves in perfume instead of deodorant because she’s convinced it makes her smell amazing

Her room’s kinda small but she and her mum decorated it rlly nicely to make up for it
Jocelyn says she made most of the design choices, but it was mostly her mum’s doing when it comes to the vanity and wall colour lol
She Fr loves her room tho so it doesn’t even matter
She isn’t as much of a makeup girl as Tammy is, but she dabbles in natural eyeshadow shades and she takes her skin care seriously
At her mum’s suggestion, naturally
Honestly, her mum gives her pretty good advice
Tammy convinced her to do the healthy water trend too
We love our healthy queens
Tammy doesn’t have a full length mirror anymore so whenever they’re hanging out at Jocelyn’s house they HAVE to take a billion OOTD selfies in her mirror
Jocelyn too fell into the vine decor rabbit hole, except she switched it up a bit with the pop of floral by her bed

Jimmy Jr. has two rooms
This one is the bedroom he has when he’s with Jimmy Sr.
The thing is though, he really hates this room
His dad has always wanted him to be into sports, so his room is basketball themed
Jimmy Pesto knew his son would be tall as he grew up, so he always pushed him HARD to be a basketball player
But J-Ju HATES it
He’s just not into it
But he really does like baseball!
So Jimmy Sr. is at least a little bit happy with the choices his kid makes
The room though, it just isn’t him
The colours just don’t suit him (that’s what Zeke says) and the vibe is off
J-Ju still sleeps with his childhood stuffed animal
It’s piglet from Winnie the Pooh
He’s also kinda a messy kid
Clothes and garbage and Gatorade bottles EVERYWHERE
Jimmy Sr. doesnt really give a fuck though
Just kinda lets J-Ju clean as he pleases
Don’t worry guys, Jimmy Jr. still has bits and pieces of himself around the room
His fav. Comic book characters are on his walls, and he even convinced his dad to get him a figurine of his number one character!
The sloth snake is only really there because Zeke got it for him
Don’t get him wrong, he likes sloth snake, it just isn’t his favourite thing really
But it’s just one more thing he can use to bond with Zeke, so he’ll put the poster up if he has to
(but there is a reason he put it up in the room he spends the least amount of time in)
Because of their custody agreement, J-Ju and Andy and Ollie are only at Jimmy Sr.’s every two weeks

This is his room at his mum’s house!
His mum moved into a house in suburbia and it has a very clean white kind of aesthetic
And she isn’t a neat freak or anything, but his mum does like to keep the house clean
So she’ll go in during the week that he’s with his dad and just organize things again
She doesn’t want to be one of those snoopy type mothers
But she did put a plant in Jimmy Jr.’s room so that she would have an excuse to go in there and “notice that his rooms a mess” so she can clean it
He does bring piglet with him from home to home, just don’t tell anyone that
J-Ju has read exactly three books and he displays them very proudly on his bookshelf
They’re the first Harry Potter book (he likes the movies better), The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and the book Wonder (he cried when he finished reading it, he was just so emotional)
His mum also bought him figurines of his fav. Comic book characters
Except he didn’t even have to ask her for them, she just knows what he likes and wants lol
Even though she completely supports Jimmy’s passion for the art of dance, she secretly wishes he was more into sports like basketball (she is a big b-ball fan lmfao)
So she did frame a jersey and put it above his bed
Just in hopes that maybe it will inspire him
It doesn’t though, obviously

And their mum would but their artwork up on her fridge, really, she WOULD

Zeke’s bedroom is a lil different
He lives in a trailer with his dad and stepmom, so because of limited space he has to share his room with his new baby brother
Zeke loves his little brother with his whole heart (he would die for him) but dang he just wants his own space
Every time he looks at his lil bro though, he changes his mind
He is just so gash darn cute
When he was decorating the baby’s side of the room with Cheryl, he made SURE to tape a Bulko poster next to his brother’s crib
Gotta have something there to inspire him
Zeke is convinced his baby brother is going to become the world greatest wrestler (well, second after himself, of course)
His room gets hot as all he’ll at night so naturally he has a fan in there
The only issue now is that he has to share the cool air in the coming summertime
His favourite show ever is Sloth Snake
And he was lucky enough to snag TWO posters so that J-Ju could have a matching one!
I am personally convinced that Zeke is a Jess-style reader from Gilmore girls
Like, personality-wise he is NOT Jess
But hell does he sure read like him
Just the most pretentious books/novels
Not that he’ll ever admit it to anyone
I absolutely HAD to give him a sports water bottle

This is Rudy’s room when he’s staying with his dad
He doesn’t keep a TON of stuff here, mostly just because he spends most of his time at his mums house
And plus, there’s not much he can do to alter his room since his dad’s just leasing the condo
He has his flounder plushie. He’s obsessed with that thing
Tissues next to his bed because he has allergies all of the time
His favourite comic book series makes posters and he HAD to have the fish guy
His dad kinda uses his room to put random stuff in
Like the bonsai trees
Rudy won’t say it to his face, but he does not care about those plants in the slightest
He also has never played baseball and neither has his dad? So where did that ball come from??
The car is vintage, it’s his dads old toy
He loves to bring it in for show and tell
Rudy also likes aliens and outer space
But it’s not one of his main interests at all so he keeps it on the downlow
He and his dad play competitive ping pong together
It’s one of the few sports that he can play as long as he has a puff of his inhaler between each set(?)

This used to be where he and his mum AND dad lived before the divorce
Which is why it’s a little more personalized
He loves to read and his mum loves it when he reads so she keeps his bookshelf stocked
The fish guy figurine was bought for him by his dad, he just prefers to keep it in this room
His dad understands (at least, Rudy thinks he does)
I’m going to pretend that green toy is a borobu plush lol
Louise is mega jealous because it’s an official licensed one
But now he knows what to get her for her birthday, so..
His mum keeps medicated ointment and sunscreen on his bookcase for easy access
She is a teeny bit of a helicopter mommy
His flounder plush comes with him back and forth
He really likes music (obviously, he spends his free time playing in his school’s orchestra)
So when he was little his dad bought him his own radio
He listens to it every night before bed and every morning when he’s getting ready for school
Again, he likes outer space, so he absolutely had to have those glow in the dark wall stars
His mum has a humidifier in his room because it helps him breathe at night
Or at least that’s what she says, and who is he to disagree with her?

Millie’s room is essentially a replica of Louise’s room, just with a few personalized touches here and there
She demanded a Kitty for her birthday so she got one
It’s name is Princess Sparkle Rainbow Muffin
Or at least, that’s what she tells Louise (his real name is Keith)
She doesn’t have Louise’s most current bed
Her parents had to draw the line somewhere, I guess
Her mum also wouldn’t let her get any of those LED light strips even though “Louise has them mom! I NEED THEM”
She read some article about the adhesive attracting bugs and noped the fuck out of that
So they compromised and she got string lights that she literally never turns on
Millie isn’t a huge fan of Kuchi Kopi
So she doesn’t sleep with him
But she still has one
Just cuz
The only other mentionable thing is her cactus
Idk, I wanted to give her some sort of carnivorous plant but they didn’t have any so I had to make do with what I had
Millie would totally have a Venus fly trap and she would keep that thing alive and FED

the group’s popularity was partially aided due to the fact that the lineup consisted of partially familiar faces; namely blaise and manon, who were both produce contestants as well as having been a popular street dancing duo in china prior to debut, alongside ahri, who spent her childhood acting in commercials. however, despite public excitement to see ahri debut in a group, she would be put on hiatus shortly after debut due to attitude and nepotism allegations.
despite the many twists and turns of criticism and otherwise during their early career, the turbulence would die down shortly soon after their release of lilith and the liar in 2020, a video essay of the album going viral and amassing more than 20M views within the first two days. calling the group and what they were doing ‘poetic artistry’, it suddenly became the trend for book of eve’s albums to be broken down and analysed, even leading the group to making a short youtube series with a24 at the peak of their popularity.

Korea’s 2023 Top 10 Beauty Market Trends

Despite having the smallest population among the world’s Top 10 markets (50 million), South Korea—the birthplace of K-beauty—has the eighth largest cosmetics and personal care market in the world (Euromonitor, 2022).
During the 2010s, K-beauty came into the global market as a hot trend, highlighting sheet masks, BB cream, CC cream, sleeping packs and foundation cushions. Still, not many are aware that South Korea is home to the third largest cosmetic export country in the world, after France and the United States, but ahead of Germany and Japan.
At the same time, this small yet strong beauty powerhouse could not escape the effects of the pandemic. 
Below is a summary of the Top 10 trends in the Korean market over the past three years. 
1. Offline Channels Strike Hard
The size of the domestic market in Korea is limited, but it is no exaggeration to say that the demand for purchases by tourists and bundle merchants led to its growth before the pandemic. Once known as Korea’s largest tourist destination and the mecca of K-beauty, the Myeong-dong shopping street recently collapsed due to a decrease in foot traffic. K-beauty also depends on a large volume of sales from duty-free channels in Korea; in fact, Korea has the world’s biggest duty-free sales revenue, totaling $14.5 billion in 2022, with a recovery rate of 71.6% compared to 2019 sales (Korea Duty-Free Shops Association, 2022). During the last quarter of 2022, Myeong-dong began to gain some traction with non-Chinese tourists.
2. Digital Acceleration
The digitalization of distribution and marketing was already completed before the pandemic, and this is an irresistible trend of the times. However, it is difficult to deny that the pandemic accelerated the pace of transition. In the Korean market, many brands tried to expand sales in the domestic market and major e-commerce platform providers such as Coupang and Naver achieved rapid growth in sales performance. Coupang—Korea’s equivalent of Amazon—made a surplus in the last quarter of 2022. Companies that have already completed or are in the process of digitizing have once again taken advantage of the pandemic to take a leap forward.
3. Offline Luxury’s Pride Mislaid
Even if online shopping has undergone a rapid transition, luxury brand sales have steadily grown, centering on department store channels. One difference compared to previous years is that there was a formula or prejudice in the Korean market that labeled luxury brand’s equivalent to department stores. However, over the last two to three years, high-priced brands have expanded their presence on the online market. For example, Market-Kurly, which specializes in the Korean food delivery market, launched the Beauty-Kurly platform, as did other high-priced brands such as La Mer, Lancôme, Sulwhasoo and many others. 
4. Waiting for the Reopening of the Chinese Market
The Chinese market has long been the largest consumer of Korean cosmetics, accounting for most of its exports especially in the 2010s. Although the export amount has steadily increased, its share has continued to decline, with less than 60% of the whole export share for the first time in 2021. For the last couple of years, a political issue between China and Korea, the patriotic consumption trend in China, beauty industry and brand growth, competition within the region, and the pandemic has also influenced sufferings of the K-beauty export. In fact, the Korean cosmetics export amount has decreased by approximately 13% compared to previous years for the first time in a decade due to sales in China. The reopening of the Chinese market will affect K-beauty market performance in 2023.
5. Saving Private K-beauty
Although Korea and Japan have been geographically and culturally close markets for a long time, they have still not been able to shake off the political resentments of 20th century colonial history. 
In terms of the cosmetics industry, Asia’s biggest rival competes with world-leading technologies, ideas and products. During the pandemic, Korea provided Korean wave content to Japanese female consumer groups in their teens and 20s, who consume so much from food, culture and cosmetics. 
Thanks to their love for K-beauty, Japan will export more than $1 billion of goods in 2022, becoming Korea’s second-largest exporter after China, while exports are also expected to exceed $1 billion in 2022. This poses the question of whether the Japanese market will be able to replace the Chinese market.
6. Sustainability Matters
The market and consumer demand for sustainability has become a global trend; this is not much different in the Korean market. The K-beauty industry is increasing the use of recycled paper packaging materials and soy ink, but it seems that more time is still needed in areas such as recycling packaging development, disposal technology and safety assurance. 
From September 2021, the Ministry of Environment in Korea implemented a recycling grading system for packages. Since then, packaging has been manufactured with sustainability taken into consideration through various eco-friendly factors, such as mandatory labeling and imposing fines for any production processes that have a negative effect on the environment.
7. Customized Beauty Awaits
Customized cosmetic regulations have been proposed and applied for the first time in Korean history. The Korean government-led market is growing and various relevant online services and offline stores are being introduced. 
Since the system was set up in 2020, it is expected that this market growth will be on track when overseas tourists start visiting Korea in the near future. Meanwhile, as Chinese authorities recently announced a  pilot operation of the customized cosmetics regulation in some regions, Korea’s uniqueness is now expected to extend to China.
8. All Roads Lead to Clean Beauty
There is still no exact definition of clean beauty. Google won’t be able to give the answer to this, either. Clean beauty began with products that exclude harmful chemicals. Meanwhile, in Korea, vegan, natural, organic, ESG, sustainability and eco-friendly became a significant market force. 
Clean beauty can be useful as an expressive marketing tool; even vegan certifications may be marketed with clean beauty claims. However, because the Korean government forced cosmetic brands to meet standards for natural and organic cosmetics claims, some freedom of expression was suppressed. 
This means marketers may have to find alternative catchphrases. 
9. Microbiome Beauty
The microbiome has been up and coming in the Korean market since the late 2010s, but since then, there have been no eye-catching brands or products in the space. Now, together with the aid of the government, academies and the whole industry united, Korea has begun to combine the technology, genetic information and personalized prescriptions, followed by customized cosmetics. 
This project not only covers Korean consumer groups, but eventually will build a whole data bank of global skin genetic information. This will be used by Korean companies to develop an advanced customization standard for Korean consumers and beyond. 
The only limitation of the microbiome will be regulations that ban microorganisms in the product and ingredient standardization technologies.
10. CJ Olive Young, the Kingdom Undefeated
Even during the pandemic crisis, CJ Olive Young’s stronghold could not be broken. Olive Young, South Korea’s leading H&B store, remained firm even as its rival retail outlets Lalabla, Lohbs, BOONS and Boots closed after the pandemic. 
Its market share increase of 63.4% in the first half of 2022 means it is actually operating as an oligopoly. Sales exceeded $1.6 billion as of 2021, setting a sales record; while sales in 2022 that have not yet been announced, they are expected to surpass those of 2021. Now, without its biggest competitors in the market, CJ Olive Young is expected to reign as an unrivaled powerhouse in Korean offline cosmetics distribution.
