Tempo and everything about it.

Originated from a request to put Tempo in another post of mine, I then decided that the concept itself is too complex… So here we are! Here I will explain what tempo is, show an example decklist and some other hot stuff - and I hope it will be as fun reading, as it was writing! Also be aware than *tempo factor a play has* will just be called a tempo play in this article because I am talking about tempo as a strategical term. So, just *tempo factor* would be called tempo here.

First of all,

Tempo

is a term that has many definitions. From Hearthstone:

The value of the effect on the board state divided by the mana(Gold in our case) used. The momentum of the match. The change of the board state in a given time

The speed at which a player is reaching his/her win condition. 

I like the first one because it can allow us to calculate how “fast” is a particular card. For example, Old aaron (5/5) is “vanilla” (default) stats for… 5G. No effect, so the tempo you gain by this card is 1. Simple? Not so much.

Tempo is basically board control. Here is a very common situation:

Let’s take a look. This is a common occurence in CoffinTeg vs Midrange Justice. Both were nerfed, but this screenshot is just an example. Integrity has the board right now, but if the Justice player does the following: -Plays Vulkin into Burgerpants -Plays Faun into Gyftrot -Plays Muffet’s pet Then Justice will have total control. Now, remember our Glyde example? Let’s analyze in a similar manner. Gyftrot costs 8G, Burgerpants costs 6 but because of the card’s effect it’s hard to define a true cost, so let’s just assume it’s 2 (vanilla stats). So, Integrity has a whole 10G board! Faun+Muffet’s Pet+Vulkin cost 13G and remove the board of 10G that Integrity just put. 13-10=3. So, for 3G we get a 4/4+2/4+3/5=9/13 total stats. Which is an average for an 11 cost monster with no effect. 11/3= 3.6. But do we need calculations to see that sounds powerfull as heck? Of course not, FaunPet is one of the strongest tempo combos in the game. By the way, Coffinteg lost that battle afterwards with almost no chance. Card advantage is also one term that has to do with Tempo. Truthfully, Tempo=Board Control+Card Advantage. In the above image Justice used 3 cards, while Integrity used 2, and if Justice didn’t have their Silences in hand for quickly bursting through taunts and coffins, Integrity would have a chance to come back into the game because they already have 1 more card and Draw artifact. If they can survive until late-game, they will have much more cards in their hand than Justice and, maybe, outvalue the Justice player in the end. One very cool example of a card that has both Tempo concepts is So Sorry. With both Doodlebogs played, you get a total 10/10 for 9G while also having 3 monsters on your board using 1 card instead of 3. So Sorry provides a little board control above-average advantage AND card advantage. Tempo is usually gained by “fast” cards - those who do something immediately, like all Charge/Haste cards (perfect if they also manage to stay on board after killing something), Magic cards that influence the board, like Fuku Fire or Vulkin. Also board controlling Start of turn and End of turn effects like Elder Puzzler. Slower, but still not slow cards are buffs - Grillby and alike. They help to trade, for example, you have a ¾ on your board and opponent has So Sorry - you throw in a Grillby and your monster kills So Sorry AND survives with 1 HP - a powerfull tempo play too.  Very arguable ones are Taunt cards. True, a Greater Dog (buffed by Magic) can take out a full So Sorry, but usually Taunt cards are there to defend. And if the opponent has a removal or Silence, THEY gain tempo as your taunt behemoth removes 1 monster per turn while opponent has 3-4. Tempo is also an archetype. Needless to say that the best archetpye in Tempo is aggro/faster zoo Bravery - both boar control and card advantage they do well, and also fall to all the definitions of Tempo. The famous decks that can be considered tempo decks are Temold Perseverance (not the outright aggro version!), So Sorry/Sad Customer Integrity (old days, you could have a full So Sorry played at turn TWO) and many others. Remember that Justice vs CoffinTeg? Well, I lied. That “midrange justice” can be cosidered a Tempo deck, it, in fact, is. I won’t further approach Tempo as a deck like I did with my Librarian post, becaue there are only 2 real rules. -Tempo decks aim for tempo cards, obviously, while also having something for drawing, if your deck is aimed at early board control. -EVERY deck has the potential to make tempo plays. Take a look at an example of a Tempo deck.

All the deck consists of cards that are easier to make tempo plays with. The only tempo-loss card there is Asriel Dreemurr, which is needed not for his 10/10 board capabilities, but the healing effect. Speaking of Tempo loss cards, those are usually some long-term things or just situational cards. Also you can pretty much play a Grillby on an empty board and it also will be considred a tempo loss. Examples of long-term Tempo loss cards: Gerson, Bone Painting, Editor 2. Examples of situational ones: Skateboard Girl, Robot 98. Also there are cards that are a massive tempo loss while put, but dangerous if ignored - Pyrope, Microwave, Timer, et cetera. That’s all!
