Dragonese
So in the httyd books I think it is mentioned that some of the words in dragonese are hard to pronounce because humans don't have a forked tongues, but if you want to be technical humans can fork their tongue. There is a cosmedic procedure that does this. Now I'm not saying he WOULD. I'm just saying that Hiccup has 100 percent at least THOUGHT about forking his tongue to speak better dragonese, even if he decided against it.

I feel like Hiccup was a biter as a young kid. Like he'd occasionally say something a little too snarky to Snotlout and almost get beat up for it, but narrowly escape (not without several bruises) by biting him hard then running off to the forest to seek safety with woodland creatures

Some HTTYD Book headcanons! (A few full-series spoilers ahead)
Hiccup is ambidextrous (because he learned he was left-handed when he was 10, he can now write with both hands! He favors his left of course but it's good to have a fall back)
The Deadly Shadow is hypoallergenic. I don't really know how it works but it definitely it makes Fishlegs's life a little easier
Hiccup says "oh dear" and "oh my goodness" a lot, so I like to think he also says other old lady phrases like "good gracious" "dearie me" and "as I live and breathe". He also calls his friends "my dear", ala "my dear Fishlegs, my dear Camicazi" and "my dear little Toothless" (I'm especially fond of 'my dear little Toothless')
Since Excellinor is a witch and has the ability to prophesy, Alvin and even Fishlegs also have inherited a mild ability to see into the future, maybe via dreams or a sense of deja vu. Fishlegs doesn't figure it out until he's older, in which he picks up soothsaying as a side hobby and gets really good at it.
Fishlegs and Hiccup make songs together and sing them at parties. Fishlegs is a wonderful singer and can hold a tune very well.
Bog-Burglars are some of the best dancers in the archipelago, having some crazy and impressive moves due to being escape artists with impeccable balance and flexibility.
Camicazi never gets taller than 5"4
The trio get more tattoos as they get older. Camicazi gets colorful designs all over her skin that are inked with special oils from Stormfly that allow the tattoos to change depending on her mood. Fishlegs gets a neat, stylized lobster in honor of his mother, as well as a stylized three-headed dragon. And Hiccup gets three seadragon designs; the Wodensfang tattooed on one arm, Furious on the other, and Toothless over his heart.
An idea from @orangeblob79 is that Fishlegs uses a cane for his limp! I love this headcanon and have since adopted it
Likewise, @mrsnaildood brought up that dragonmark/slavemark ink is a super-permanent ink made by mixing dragon and human blood, and therefore dragons and humans fighting in the war and getting blood on each other would create permanent tattoo-like marks, which is SO fascinating and something I definitely subscribe to.
Hiccup does eventually get married, but it's for strictly political reasons. He has one biological kid and then adopts two more! I just feel like he'd really like kids. I also feel like he'd make a pretty good dad, seeing how well he managed to parent Toothless
Mermaids are in fact real. This one's random but Hiccup canonically wrote a book about mermaids so I vehemently believe they do exist in the httyd universe and that Hiccup met and studied them. I also like to think they're distantly related to dragons!
Toothless cat gecko. He purrs like a motorcycle and gives Hiccup head butts and rubs up against his legs or against his face if he's on Hiccup's shoulder. He also gets the zoomies and does biscuits which is REALLY ANNOYING because his claws are really sharp and shreds everything to ribbons. He also responds to pspsps but would NEVER admit it.

Slightly sad but also funny concept of Book Hiccup being a trans guy Hiccup realizes he's trans and does most of his transition during one of the long stretches of time that Valhallarama is gone, so when she gets back she's just like "Hmmm, could have sworn i had a daughter..................... oh well"

I have a headcanon that Gumboil is actually chief of the Murderous tribe. He's very cunning and good with words but no Viking would take him seriously. He uses Madguts as a "voice" but hes really more of the muscle and face to appear as Chief. They both would pay off from it. Gumboil gets to make the decisions and Madguts the glory and benefits of appearing as a chief.

bit of a hot take but gustav should've gotten torch the typhoomerang after torch hit that growth spurt
the only reason he had was given fanghook was because he was copying snotlout and it sealed his fate as recurring gag rather than realized character like stoik or gobber
In the books, the Monstrous Nightmares are said to be reserved for chiefs and sons-of-chiefs — the best of the best — and in the first movie this is repeated with:
“And then, there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those. [They have this... nasty habit of setting themselves on fire.]”
(The use of “nasty habit” here makes it seem as bad as smoking (literally) or nose picking and I love that.)
In the books, that fact is beaten into us with how, a) Toothless isn’t a member of the chieftain’s preferred species, and b) Fireworm, Snotlout’s dragon, is. (And so is Hookfang, Stoick’s dragon in the books, partnered by the Gronckle Newtsbreath.)
So seeing as this “only the best Vikings go after [Monstrous Nightmares]” is set up in the franchise just as in the books (albeit never really spoken of again, there is a wonderful fanfiction about it, though), I think it’s quite poetic that Snotlout and his little brother Gustav both have Nightmares! They’re the best!
And who doesn’t have a Monstrous Nightmare that you’d expect to because “only the best Vikings” go for them?
Stoick certainly doesn’t. Nor does Gobber, or Dagur, or Heather, or even Spitelout!
(Sure there’s background characters just to fill a scene in HTTYD 2 and 3, but that’s that… oh, and there’s Sven but let’s just say he’s the best whiner and get it over with. YOU RUINED THE METAPHOR, SVEN-LY!)
I headcanon that Hiccup sees himself in Gustav a bit (Gustav is, after all, a hiccup, even if never explicitly stated in canon), and seeing as he couldn’t get a Night Fury, the Monstrous Nightmare being for “the best Vikings” was probably a good next choice… plus his idolisation of Snotlout (that RTTE kind of ruined) swayed his decision a bit, but that’s also because he was only “trained” in training a Nightmare, anyway!
And I love The Flight Stuff (Fanghook’s debut episode) because it’s so cute! B-plot with the twins is stupid, but look! Hookfang is good with kids! Cute!! The taming of Fanghook is also uncouth and unconventional, but that’s also Gustav to a T anyway!
I love their relationship, because Fanghook is so sweet and you could say that after Gustav is told to let him go but it’s revealed he doesn’t, it’s almost like forbidden friendship of sorts, huh? Huh?
Granted, he could have had that with Torch but what’s done is done. The boys ever are adorable.
In fact, as for the ‘copying Snotlout’ situation: I agree! That’s exactly why they did it. But it’s fun to think of metaphorically, annnd… he was also only thirteen! It’s just a throwaway line, but in @otwdfanfic’s fic Once There Were Dragons on AO3, Gustav says this (yes, I know it isn’t canon but it made me realise this), and Gustav’s whole story line is dedicated to the finding of Fanghook!
Cute cute cute. They love each other to bits.
TL;DR: I respect this HC but I’m a nerd who loves the “true bond / soul bond” shit and so I’m just digging my heels into the gravel and clinging onto the protein-filled-whatever with my teeth.

I think our first clue that this dragon was Really Bad News(tm) was probably the fact that it was Hiccup who locked it away.
He didn't lock Death Songs away for good. He didn't lock the Skrill away that second time even though they were literally after his and Toothless' lives then. He didn't lock the Screaming Death away.
But Jörmungandr, that one he did lock away.
And he designed a locking mechanism that only Toothless could open. Not just any dragon, not even a single human, but the extremely rare Night Fury. (and by extension, the Light Fury)
Whatever happened while Hiccup and the Dragon Riders were down in the Hidden World, it made him want to prevent this dragon from ever seeing the light of day again. And there's only one another dragon that he and Toothless dealt with that made them go to measures this drastic.

Canonically it says in the books that Hiccup got married and had kids so I like to think that him and Camicazi got married in a convenient friendship kinda way cuz they kept getting bugged to have heirs. But then they also married Fishlegs cuz that’s their buddy and they can’t just leave him out :( so now everything’s still the exact same except they just have matching rings now

Fishlegs is Alvin's Son? (HTTYD/RTTE Theory/Headcanon)
Tumblr media
Well met, my fellow Furians! In connection with my Fishlegs the Outcast article (here), this is another article concerning the relationship between Fishlegs and Alvin the Treacherous Trustworthy.
Could Fishlegs be Alvin's son?
Why would I ask that? Well, if you're a fan of the books like I am, it's obvious I'd ask this question. In the books, Fishlegs was Alvin's son. (Spoilers: Alvin doesn't get a redemption arc in the books. He remains an unrepentant villain to the last! 😂)
Naturally, of course, this is the TV series, and TV Alvin is va-a-a-a-astly different from his Book counterpart. As is Fishlegs, for that matter. And, well, the entire story plot. So it just goes to show that it's 98% likely that they have zero blood relations at all!
HOWEVER!!! That doesn't mean that it's impossible! It's always plausible that Fishlegs could've been adopted, like in the books, and that his real biological father is Alvin!
Of course, in reality, Fishlegs and Alvin have had too few interactions to really authenticate this theory, but at the same time, it's also possible for Alvin to totally not recognize his son (especially if he's never seen the child to begin with), and thus treat him differently than if he knew that he was his son.
Regardless of whether this is true or not, the fact that this plausibility exists just adds an additional layer of depth to this relationship that wasn't there before, and I'm LOVING IT!! 🤩😍
What do you guys think? Do you think that TV Fishlegs and Alvin could be biologically related? Or do you think that they're not related at all?
Thank you for reading and I hope that you have a wonderful day! See you in another article!
Long Live the Night!

Snotlout: “Let go of me!l
Krogan: “Get me my Dragon eye, or the small one will pay!”
Snotlout: “Men. TYPICAL.”
(Quotes off Book of life, good movie, recommend watching it.)
Snotlout having some feminism is a funny head canon. Like, snapping his fingers in a “Z” way, Crossing his legs like a woman when he sits, gossiping about men (even though he is one)
And then painting his nails with the twins.

Was watching one of the pirates of the caribbean movies and got to wondering, do the sea faring folks in the otwd saga got any myths and legends about the sea? Like things they're deadly afraid of or spirits they think are dwelling the waters?
(Very specific ask but i got curious LMAO <333)
I've definitely thought about different myths and superstitions since so many of our characters are sailors! Their #1 legendary sea monster is the sea serpent Jormungand, since he's basically their version of Godzilla and his arrival would be a sign of Ragnarok. Krakens are another great monster to be feared. Those are both pretty practical fears, since other giant monsters exist in their world, but they also fear (and adore) sirens, just like any good sailor aught to. They believe they're the daughters of Aegir and Ran, two sea gods who love to drown sailors. Njord is a friendlier sea god favored by fishermen, and Thor controls the weather. There's different rituals that can be done to appease those gods.
Shooting at seabirds like albatross and cormorants is unlucky, as is killing a white whale (since they can speak norse and curse you!). Bloodying the bow of a new boat before it's put in the water is good luck. Magic is usually considered unlucky in general for vikings because it's sly, tricky, and unmanly as opposed to brute strength, but they separate magic up into a lot of different types (religious rituals for example aren't magic, divination magic is fine for women, runic good luck charms are fine) so there's a lot of nuance but black magic/curses are a big No across the board. Ghosts of all kinds (ghost ships, ghost crews, drowned sailors, evil spirits) are popular stories.
Not everyone is very superstitious or believes in everything mentioned here, and there's some differences in beliefs between sailors, fishermen and raiders. Gustav certainly doesn't believe in most of it because he thinks dragons are behind all the legends. Ragnall on the other hand is a highly superstitious sailor (probably because his tribe the Thunderheads are even more sea-focused than most vikings) and his use of magic charms to protect himself is controversial with the crew.
Sorry it took me so long to respond! I LOVE pirates of the caribbean and now I want to rewatch those movies...

Loves the rain, the sound, the smell the atmosphere it gives, she just loves all of it
Her favorite genre of music would either be rock or lofi
One of the chillest people you will ever meet
Bisexual
Her favorite drink would be coffee with a lot of cream but almost zero sugar
Ambivert
Plays at least one musical instrument
Cat person
Tried to learn how to soothsy when she was a kid but gave up after a month, because it was too difficult
She can cook like two dishes, but that’s it and neither of them are very good
