I don't think Hiccup can actually fully understand dragons (they don't really have a clear, learnable language. mainly communication through a range of sounds and body language), but his familiarity with Toothless' noises and mannerisms, and Hiccup's habit of mimicking them, has helped him understand the gist of what most dragons are trying to communicate and he often responds in kind. Sometimes he doesn't even realize when he's doing it and wonders why people are giving him such strange looks.

Hiccstrid is crazy because it's Hiccup "would kill for her" Haddock and Astrid "would die for him" Hofferson, not the other way round.

Yeah in any other case it's Hiccup 'would die for a cause/person' and Astrid 'would kill for cause/person' but when it comes to each other? Hiccup has canonically been ready to kill for Astrid, as in blast-a-man-to-bits with Toothless and let a nearly extinct dragon be slaughtered. And whenever Hiccup is in danger and Astrid is there she's the one who pushes him out of the way, endangering herself. Like with the Death Song, the Light Fury, girl was ready to sacrifice herself for the young chief.

I just think it's cool how much these two love each other they're willing to go farther than they ever would in any other occasion.

Alright so Part Two of Polarizing Hiccup Headcanons:

Hiccup is a bad Chief.

He is not meant to be a civil servant. Hiccup is meant to lead armies, chart maps, strategize military movements. He's made to invent, create, adventure- and destroy. Hiccup leads Soldiers very well, he's a brilliant military leader, but civilians?

Officiating weddings, building fences, settling disputes, naming children? No. He gets absolutely no joy from that, he's not good at it either.

This is why being Chief sucks the absolute LIFE out of him. Being grounded, forced to serve, he's no different then a dragon with clipped wings.

So yes, he's a bad Chief and he had a steep learning curve, it takes YEARS for him to acclimate to it and even at 31 he silently loathes it.

it’s funny cos there are two Hiccups and neither of them should be chief but for opposite reasons. Movie!Hiccup shouldn’t be chief because he’s a well intentioned idiot who shouldn’t be trusted with all that responsibility because he can’t even work out his own issues let alone other peoples. He should have just gone off with Valka to explore and vibe with dragons and do a little inventing.

And show!Hiccup shouldn’t be chief because he’s a feral strategic genius who needs enrichment and being chief wouldn’t be stimulating enough. Getting stuck in one place dealing with domestic disputes would be like putting him in a cage. He’d be climbing up the fucking walls. Seeing as how broken Stoick was after Valka’s “death” I don’t think it’s something he and others spoke very openly about, so I’d like to think that Hiccup’s friends really only had really vague knowledge of what actually happened to his mom.

Like, she died when Hiccup was a baby and the chief blames himself, they know nothing more than that.

So just imagine on day, Hiccup, who in his teenage years became comfortable talking about the subject, goes: “yeah and my mom was eaten by dragons”

I would like to write and/or read more about Hiccup dealing with grief, trauma, and the unwanted burden of leading the tribe immediately after Stoick's death.

I keep thinking about a scene where Hiccup is listening to complaints and petitions in the great hall. At the beginning, he's clearly anxious and unsure of himself. As the meeting goes on, his eyes glaze over and his mind keeps wandering to save him from the stress of the situation. His friends and family are helping as much as possible. Fishlegs is taking notes because he knows Hiccup won't remember anything. Astrid and Snotlout are firm with people who are being too forward or stepping over the line, meanwhile Valka offers compromise in situations where they need to mediate between two opposing parties. Gobber and the twins add levity when things get too heavy.

It takes a full team of people to help keep Hiccup on track. He nods and occasionally speaks in assent to give the appearance of being present, but in his mind, he's flying on Toothless somewhere far, far away.

I love the idea of Hiccup being plagued with guilt whenever he's not able to bond with a dragon or has to fight one (despite it often being self defense he has no choice in). Like, the whole thing with the skrill probably weighed on him for years until they caught it again and he chose to release it.

“I was never meant to be kill her at Maydeen's Bay - I was never supposed to kill her at all.

The remaining chapters of this story tell you what you need to know; I am innocent, despite my punishment of being hung, so I hope you will listen.

Wherever these papers will go, you will realise her precious blood is on their hands, not mine. I lived a simple life until my eyes set upon her, and I do not regret it, I do not regret her. After years of pathetic thieving and sailing seas, she gave a little explosion of excitement everywhere she went.

A feisty soul, I tell you, and that was taken away from her.

When that was stripped from me, I felt no purpose.

I intend to immortalise her, not just my love for her, but her as a whole: personality, attitude, her story. How she came into my life and the obscenity of her death, the consequences I shall face although I was not the one holding the sword. I have no other way to prove it but a first-person account never fails to try.

As I sit here, on a salty rock at Maydeen's Bay, fingers stiff, my spine shivers at the thought of her. I have fourty-eight hours until I join her- her, her, her … I dare speak her name just yet, I want her to be revealed to you as the tale goes on, just as she slowly revealed herself to me, and I fell in love. I have given up in running away this time, I want to be with her.

The story starts at the Isle of Berk, my home village, and the day I set sail to forget my father's torment.

I come from an unnecessarily long-winded line of chieftains and forgotten kings, harsh expectations and an intolerance for weakness. I was not up for that. I've battled in my twenty-one years of life, but never yearned for it. I craved the sea, freedom, individuality. I spent most days at markets and most nights with mead running through my blood.

Who really cares about creatures who seek to control every part of your life? The ocean called me to find my humanity, and I went for it.

So we begin.

Hiccup x reader headcanons : just general ones, no specific focus.

Warnings: none, all PG here.

Not proofread and it’s almost midnight bear with me here

-hiccup falls fast and he falls hard

-toothless ADORES you, which means you pretty much pass every test in his book

-Stoick also loved you, he thought you made a fine partner for hiccup.

-he’s crafty, but not entirely in a making things for a gift kind of way

-his love language would be more quality time mixed in with a little bit of physical touch

-most quality time would be spent on calming night rides, not always bringing your dragon along, sometimes he just wants to ride with you on toothless to feel you closer.

-he may be a peacekeeper but he can still feel jealousy.

-when he does feel jealous he often isn’t very straightforward about it, but you can tell through his avoidance and pouts that something is up

-he shuts people out thinking he has to work alone because that’s what his dad did

-he gets better at communicating but not without a little push first.

-he would love to just ramble on about his new inventions and he appreciates when you are willing to just sit and listen even if you don’t understand everything.

-he’d often be at the forge, not necessarily working, but just sketching things out for his next creation which is where you could find him most days

-you two would eventually get engaged but hiccup would be extremely nervous about it, believing he isn’t meeting yours or anyone else’s expectations for being a chief or a good fiancé

-you talk him out of believing that for the most part, showing him that you love him unconditionally. (He still sometimes doesn’t believe he’s as good as everyone says he is)

-When he needs to get away from the stresses of being a chief, he always goes to you.

-most of the time the best way for him to chill out is just by talking with you, not necessarily about what’s stressing him out, just to talk to you, to know what you’re thinking or doing at that moment.

-if you’re a dragon racer he may not show up to your races, probably being occupied with exploring, but he always congratulates you

-you thought toothless and Stoick loved you, well get ready for VALKA

-that woman absolutely LOVES YOU.

-she was ecstatic when she found out you two were engaged, practically announcing it to all of Berk on her own

-she welcomes you with open arms, excited to have someone else to share all of her knowledge and familial memories with.

-she’s always a helping hand when you’re having issues with hiccup or you don’t know how to go about communicating with him

-hiccup is understanding, but when he’s under a lot of stress he tends to be more irritable than he means.

-he always makes sure that no matter how busy he becomes, he has Time to just take at least an hour to spend with you, doing whatever you feel like.
