yes you should absolutely be aware that the music you like when you’re 14-16ish will always have a stronghold on you. there is nothing inherently wrong with this. however. the one that concerns me is that the les mis phase that occurred during those years still impacts me. do you know what that’s like. to have grantaire be one of your main comfort characters. i’m 24. it’s been 10 years. let me go. why is he a character i can always go back to. i don’t want this. i didn’t ask for this.

your depiction of China as an opaque censorship state and implying they are politically censoring you is racist, Neil
Got it. So do YOU know why Sandman, Babel and the other people and things deemed ineligible were ineligible? Because the Hugo Awards administration won't say. In every other Hugo Awards cycle, if something was ineligible, it was explained why. This time things and people were removed from the ballot without explanation.
I've been asking for an explanation. I haven't offered any explanation because I don't know.
You're the one suggesting it was "political censorship" from an "opaque censorship state". (Lovely turn of phrase that.)
I'm happy to blame stupidity or incompetence, and all I'm asking for is a promise from the Glasgow Worldcon that qualifying items that are nominated by the voters for Hugos will not be removed by Administrator whim without explanation as "ineligible". Where do you stand on that?

The thing is, Jean Valjean’s “nineteen year prison sentence for stealing a loaf of bread” from Les Mis isn’t actually unusual….not even today! I see people talking about it as if it’s strange or unimaginable when it happens every day.
In modern America — often as a result of pointlessly cruel (and racist) habitual offender and mandatory minimum laws— people are routinely sentenced to life in prison for minor crimes like shoplifting or possession of drugs.
The ACLU did a report in 2013 detailing the lives of various people who were sentenced to life in prison without parole for nonviolent property crimes like:
•attempting to cash a stolen check
•a junk-dealer’s possession of stolen junk
metal (10 valves and one elbow pipe)
•possession of stolen wrenches
•siphoning gasoline from a truck
•stealing tools from a tool shed and a welding machine from a yard
•shoplifting three belts from a department store
•shoplifting several digital cameras
•shoplifting two jerseys from an athletic store
• taking a television, circular saw, and a power converter from a vacant house
• breaking into a closed liquor store in the middle of the night
And of course, so so so many people sentenced to life without parole for the possession of a few grams of drugs.
And we could go on and on!
Gregory Taylor was a homeless man in Los Angeles who, in 1997, was sentenced to “25 years to life” for attempting to steal food from a food kitchen. He was released after 13 years. The lawyers helping to release him even cited Les Miserables in their appeal, comparing Taylor’s sentence to Jean Valjean’s.
And there’s another specific bit of social commentary Hugo was making about Valjean’s trial that’s still depressingly relevant. He writes that Valjean was sentenced for the theft of loaf of bread, but also that the court managed to make that sentence stick by bringing up some of his past misdemeanors. For example, Valjean owned a gun and was known to occasionally poach wildlife (presumably for his starving family to eat.) . So the court exaggerates how harmful the bread theft was—he had to smash a windowpane to get the bread, which is basically Violence— then insist the fact that he owns a gun and occasionally poaches is proof that he is habitually and innately violent. Then when Valjean obviously becomes distressed traumatized and furious as a result of his nakedly unjust sentence and begins making desperate (and very unsuccessful/impulsive/ poorly thought through) attempts to escape…. the government indifferently tacks more years onto his sentence, labels him a “dangerous” felon, and insists that its initial read of him as an innately violent person was correct.
And it’s sad how a lot of the real life stories linked earlier are similar to the commentary Hugo wrote in 1863? Someone will commit a nonviolent property crime, and then the court insists that a bunch of other miscellaneous things they’ve done in the past (whether it’s other minor thefts or being addicted to drugs or w/e) are Proof they’re inherently violent and incapable of being around other people.
A small very petty fandom side note: This is also why I dislike all those common jokes you see everywhere along the lines of “lol it’s so unrealistic for the police to want to arrest Valjean over a loaf of bread, there must have been some other reason the police were pursuing him. Because the state would never punish someone that harshly and irrationally for no reason. so maybe javert was just gay haha”. (Ex: this tiktok— please don’t harass the creator or poster though, I don’t think they were intending to mean anything like that and its just a silly common type of joke you see made about Les mis all the time so it’s not unique in any way.) because like.
As much as I don’t think Les Mis is a flawless book or that its political messaging is perfect….the only way that insanely long unjust sentences for minor crimes is “unrealistic” is if you’re operating on the assumption that prisons are here to Keep You Safe by always only punishing bad criminals who do serious crimes. And that’s just, not true at all. Like I get that these are just goofy silly shallow jokes, and I’m not angry or going to harass anyone who makes them. but it feels like there’s an assumption underlying all those goofy jokes that “this is just not how prison works!” “Prisons don’t routinely sentence people to absurd laughably unjust pointless sentences!” “Prisons give people fair sentences for logical reasons!” When like…no
Valjean being relentlessly hounded and tortured for a minor crime in a way that is utterly ridiculous and arbitrary in its cruelty is not actually a plot hole in Les mis. It’s a plot hole in …..society ajsjkdkdkf. And the only way to fix that is to fight for prison abolition or at least reform, and (in America) stand up against the vicious naked cruelty of habitual offender and mandatory minimum laws.
But yeah :(. I hate how Les Mis opens with a prologue saying the novel will be obsolete the moment the social issues it describes have been resolved— but two hundred years later, the book is still more relevant than ever because we’re dealing with so many of the exact same injustices.

Alexandre Dumas, prolific writer of the 19th century, enjoyed immense success for his numerous historical chronicles, such as ‘The Three Musketeers’, ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ and ‘Queen Margot’ to name a few. Son of an army general born in Saint-Domingue, (present-day Haiti), Dumas was opposed to the racist slurs of his contemporaries. In 2002, for the bicentenary of his birth, Alexandre Dumas was enshrined alongside fellow great authors of his time like Victor Hugo and Émile Zola at the mausoleum of the Panthéon of Paris.

okay the fact that the post going around with 4000 notes about censorship at the hugo awards was titled "chinese censorship at the hugos" is like. why do all you totally-not-racist i-just-hate-the-government ppl always have to put "chinese" in front of everything like it's a fucking qualifier or something. do you guys write "french censorship" or "german censorship" too oh wait no because it's only the chinese that are evil in some way and we have to let everyone know that this "censorship" is uniquely chinese in its characteristics.

Most people believe the things that most people believe
The Hugo debacle resulted from the choices of Americans: that much should be clear. There was no heavy Chinese jackboot pressing on the back of anyone's throat. But I think that boiling their actions down to "using the excuse of censorship to pre-ban works they did not like" wrongly casts this as a sort of deliberate, manipulative act.
Nearly all Westerners think China is remarkably oppressive: those who do not tend to be deeply involved in left-wing politics or have some kind of special connection to China. The overwhelming masses here are not doublethinking, they're not saying words they don't mean: they believe it. So why is it so hard to grasp that a handful of random Americans would believe that an unaltered slate would get censored?
Like, read those emails, the actual document, not the one-line summary given by a snarky tumblr post. Do they scream "all this talk of censorship and all these instructions to investigate specific political topics is a sham, all I need is a flimsy pretext to get rid of the authors I've already decided I'll ban"? Or might these people have different beliefs about the world than you? Might they genuinely think it is best for them to self-censor?
The decision of the Hugo committee was without doubt craven, nontransparent, and unprincipled. If the board's belief that they were simply pre-empting inevitable censorship was incorrect, it was additionally pointless and somewhat racist. But the idea that it was manipulative, that the committee knew they could submit any slate they wanted and chose to disqualify nominees anyway, that idea gets asserted with a lot of confidence for something that seems really unlikely to me!

Round 1 - Side A
Tumblr media
Propaganda below ⬇️
Claude Frollo Propaganda:
This man got horny and his response was “that woman must burn”
I love him so much. More seriously Book Frollo is much more ambivalent than Disney Movie Frollo which makes sense because we're talking about Victor Hugo VS a children's movie. He didn't kill Quasimodo's mom, he took him in (when himself was only nineteen and already in charge of his own baby brother since their parents had died not long before) when he was left on the church's doorstep. I mean, he does quite a few reprehensible and slightly evil stuff afterwards but he had a good start, you know ? He taught Quasi to communicate by signs when he became deaf because of the bells. He was also very much into alchemy which was pretty cool. His behavior towards Esmeralda was still very much not okay but I'd like to point out that Phoebus is also a jerk in this one. And Quasi's quite a bit amoral because no intelligent enough to understand some stuff
I actually haven't gotten very far through the book yet but from the musical (not the disney one the other one it's SO GOOD) I can confirm he sucks at being catholic. literally tells a child over and over that he's ugly and unlovable until he fully believes it and won't let the kid go outside. https://genius.com/Alan-menken-out-there-lyrics (lyrics to the song in which frollo convinces quasimodo he's unlovable. ableist as hell and shitty in every way you can possibly imagine and it breaks my heart every time. feel free to listen to the actual track but it doesn’t get good until about 40 seconds in) frollo keeps saying it's good and right to punish sinners himself, and it's not right that the wicked go unpunished. there's a really satisfying moment in the musical where quasimodo sees him for what he is and repeats his words back to him (7:45 - 8:54, frollo is the one with the insanely deep voice) and it gives me goosebumps every time to hear that "yes you do" link to that video: https://youtu.be/HL7WZcTIgus
I honestly wrote this submission because I suffered from severe insomnia for being reminded that I might have poor taste when it comes to enjoying media since I enjoy Disney version of Frollo even after I watched other versions of this character. (I am so sorry the host yes I am that annoying anon lying in the dark little corner of your ask box. I have no other thing to do in my life so hello again) His character is different from the original novel version, and to be honest as an adoption, that is NOT necessarily WRONG. He had more struggles with his pride and his self-imagine in the Catholic framework. "Beata Maria, you know I am a righteous man, of my virtue I am justly proud" as the opening line of his villain song, clearly states his main struggle throughout the movie--pride and self-imagine (super-ego) vs lust and instinct (id). Once his self-imagine in the Catholic framework was on shaking ground, he bent his twisted sense of "righteous" to make him less painful. Tbh, the novel version used the example of Bruno d’Ast to justify his hornyness, so it's just classical Frollo behaviour no matter which version it is. (SMASH THE TABLE) HAVE YOU READ~~THE NOVEL~~ I REPEAT: HIS CHARACTER IS NOT JUST "I HATE WITCHCRAFT AND I AM HORNY AND RACIST". I REPEAT: HIS CHARACTER IS NOT JUST "I HATE WITCHCRAFT AND I AM HORNY AND RACIST". I REPEAT: HIS CHARACTER IS NOT JUST "I HATE WITCHCRAFT AND I AM HORNY AND RACIST". I am sorry for the noise pollution in your submission Google form. I should have taken my sedatives regularly. I am truly sorry. Also please don't bully me in the debate, novel/musical enjoyers. LOOK, I AIN'T YOUR ENEMY. I LOVE NOVEL/MUSICAL FROLLO, I JUST LOVE DISNEY VERSION AS WELL, I AM AS TORMENTED AS YOUR FAVORITE CATHOLIC PRIEST. I am not a native tongue, so I tried my best to express my thoughts/feelings/justification why Disney version should be a qualified candidate as well. If you tried to debate with me, I would be drowned in my poor English. Sorry again.
Javert Propaganda:
His whole deal is like, “can someone still be good even if they’ve broken the law? Can you still be godly if you’re a felon” He really believes that by upholding the law, he is absolutely in the moral right all the time. And when he realizes that’s not true, it absolutely destroys him
he is the law and the law is not mocked <3 he is also. so gay. i'm sorry i refuse to believe you're even a little heterosexual if you chase jean valjean for like over 20 years for breaking parole and/or bread theft and recognise him by his muscles and have a major moral crisis as soon as he's nice to you one (1) time also he gets called out by a child that one time?? that was fun ALSO HE UHH???? THINKS HE SCREWED UP ONE TIME AND LIKE. ASKS HIS BOSS TO FIRE HIM???? (the boss is valjean he doesn't know that yet dw abt it) also uh uhm. he jumps into a river,,,, but before he does that he feels the need to put his hat on the fence nearby so it doesn't get wet lmao he's so silly goofy <3333

It's so insane and funny to me that film directors of biopics feel the need to add fiction to make the film appear more interesting.
Like. why.
You don't need to come up with anything to make history more compelling.
WHY make anything up, when Friedrich Nietzsche had to buy fucking silk underwears for Richard Wagner once, Abraham Lincoln did wrestling, Victor Hugo lived in a street of his own name when he was alive, Alexandre Dumas fucking shut down a racist with an epic comeback, Edward VII had a sex chair, Tsar Nicholas II has nudes, Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso were arrested for pissing in public together, Oskar Kokoschka commissioned an Alma Mahler fetish doll which he likely had sex with, Roald Dahl wrote some weird and questionable fetish-fanfic books, Salvador Dalí sold a blade of grass to Yoko Ono for $10 000 because he thought she could do witchcraft with a real strand of his hair, etc etc...
Do we REALLY need to make shit up when we have all these batshit stories. DO WE REALLY??????

it’s been a long time and no one really cares but it is so insanely telling that the American organisers of the hugo awards because of racist “fears of chinese censorship” disbarred authors whom they felt were critical of china in their work meanwhile the three body problem (WHICH BEGINS WITH CCP AFFILIATED STUDENTS MURDERING A PROFESSOR) has been an absolute hit in the country for how long????? it’s so fucking insane?????? your fears of Chinese censorship is projection of the fact that in the west the mildest critiques of the capitalist empire makes you lose your job and face endless harassment
