okay, seriously asking. I can't really understand the hype behind Mitski. I think the kind of music it is just isn't something that attaches to me because there are other artists I prefer who do it similarly but not effectively for me. Everyone regards her as this God but I can't see it. Maybe it's too drone-y for me? I'd love to hear the perspective from someone who enjoys her. I just want to understand

completely fair question! and thank you for asking , i'm not entirely sure how to word my answer so this is just my personal experience with her music and of course to each their own if she's not your thing i completely get that and would love some reccomendations! /gen.

I think the main catching point for me with Mitski is the variety of work she produces. She gets bottled down into the "Sad girl" genre a lot because some of her most popular or trending songs are about topics like loneliness or yearning but her work is so much more than just that it covers a lot of topics surrounding her own life and upraising feelings of being outcast or "otherness" because of her race. ( which is something i cannot directly relate to but alot of fans can relate to some form of feeling other and thus relate to her message) . Some of her most recent work really getting into the feelings of being stuck in the grind of working yourself to death for what praise you can get and like you mentioned being idolized because at the end of the day she isn't a god shes's a human being (and y'know para-social relationships and such please remember musicians are people at the end of the day).

I think i really like specific songs that I can belt along with like its a vent just to sing along like the tracks "I Will" (the song mentioned in the post i think you saw) and "Drunk walk home" and sometimes i think just finding lyrics that can resonate with a certain experience or struggle you have experienced can be comforting even if you cant 100% relate to them.

On the being drone-y front i can see how you could feel that way it might be that i kind of jump between albums so don't find the tracks too similar or drone-y? but there are definitely a few tracks that feel the same because alot of her music is slow and not melancholy but calm i geuss? .

my sort of go to's for a variety of songs from each album is :

From "Lush" : Liquid smooth , Abbey and Pearl Diver

From "Retired from sad, New Career in Business" : Goodbye my danish sweetheart , Strawberry blond and Class of 2013 (another track to yell with )

From "Bury me at make-out creek": (ones mentioned above in the belt along bit)

From "Puberty 2": Happy ,Your best american girl, Crack Baby

From "Be a the cowboy": Pink in the night (just really love the synths on this one , that and ive seen like fifty edits using it lmao) , A pearl (love the drums and the animated music video is sick for this one) and geyser.

AND finally Laurel hell the most recent album which got rudely belitted for not being "Sad girl" music anymore which was massively annoying because artists are allowed to change their styles and topics, entitled fans think their fav artists should stay the same always. Anyway rant over i'd reccomend the whole album but my recs from Laurel hell are : the already mentioned "Working for the knife" ,The only heartbreaker (for again some fun drum/synths) and Should've been me (the little error sound at the start is so stuck in my head).

sorry this turned into a super long post and sort of a rec list but to summarise , i love a good track to belt along to when i'm mad or sad and Mitski covers a large variety of said topics you might be upset about or be able to relate to in beautiful ways. That and i adore the sort of layered effects most of her songs have of mixing drums ,synth , guitar etc and the most recent album having more interesting smaller sounds added in like the error sound at the start of Should've been me etc.

Mitski while a popular artist is a human being and shouldn't be placed on some a high pedastal / people need to remember shes a person aswell not a god.

suga showing why he owns the kpop industry again. its not an everyday listen for me, but that doesn’t take away from its quality. its probably making it into my emo boi hours rotation. i liked the little reference to home. the tone shift at the end got me SHOOKETH tho like DAMN FUCK ME UP

black swan: 

fuck yall i really want an instrumental version of this song because honestly it sounds so beautiful? or maybe an instrumental version of the mv version bc jesus i love this backing. otherwise, its not really for me. i can see myself getting tired of this song really easily, and sometimes it feels like it drags on for too long. 

filter: 

ok i know this latin inspired sound is really in right now and its everywhere but DAMN it sounds so good here. jimin sounds so freaking good with this type of seductive sound and it just fits him so freaking well??? also i really like the message of this song? i think this type of genre really adds to the desperation for attention its trying to convey. top tier song easily one of my favorites of this album

im gonna be honest, this really isn’t my kind of song. like its almost there for me?? like its so freaking close, but this chorus just isn’t my thing at all. the verses i can get behind (kinda reminds me of dean a little which im here for), but this chorus is just so not there for me. the use of finna is also kinda cringey for me and its making not take this song seriously at all. 

louder than bombs: 

this is a movie/tv show soundtrack and you can’t change my mind. this is BIG ruelle vibes and i am HERE for it. you can really hear the troye sivan influence too in the chorus. like i swear i can here troye singing this chorus so easily. with that being said, i really wish there was something more? i dont think the chorus hits enough, but otherwise i like it!

you know i was expecting another go-hard song like the previous two we are bulletproofs so i was kinda sad when it didn’t happen, but this songs still really pretty. i think this song gets more meaningful when you listen with the lyrics, because thats really when the feels hit hard. otherwise, by itself it didn’t intrigue me as much as i wanted. but its still gonna wind up in my emo hours rotation bc im still emo listening to it so it all gucci

my 2018 favorites

a personal favorites list for my own benefit bc i have a shit memory

Movies: i saw a surprising amount of movies in theaters this year and finally took full advantage of Prime video and watched a ton of movies this year. Here’s some of my favs

-The Shape of Water (2017): I had to consult both twitter and my theater ticket but ya this movie came out in January (wide release). Such a magical movie, I love Guillermo del Toro’s style and tsow is just a pleasure to experience

-Love, Simon (2018): god i wish i had this movie when i was in high school and im so happy that younger queer people have this movie now

-Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again (2018): i saw this movie as soon as i got back to the US from Russia this summer and felt so many emotions during the entirety of the film. I love ABBA and their music always makes me think of my mom and gramma. 

-Crazy Rich Asians (2018): in the year of good rom-coms, this one was a stand out. i laughed, i cried (a lot), and i just loved this movie.

-The Florida Project (2017): definitely not a happy movie, but i thought it did a great job showing the parts of Orlando that aren’t part of the magic kingdom.

TV Shows: I watch so much tv holy shit

-The Good Place (2016-): I started watching tgp in January and it has been a consistent favorite all year. I actually took quite a few ethics & morals classes in college so i always get a kick out of the philosophical discussions. But omg the characters in this show are so wonderful and i would be lying if i said this show didn’t make me want to strive to be a better person

-The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017-): I have rewatched this series so many times. I really don’t like gilmore girls so i was surprised that i loved this ASP show so much. im always a sucker for period pieces and this show is also funny as hell. the midge/susie duo (in every context) is my fuckin bread and butter

-The Americans (2013-2018): i can never get anyone to watch the americans with me but god do i love this show. it’s one of the few “serious” dramas that i’ve ever gotten into and the hill i’ve chosen to die on is that keri russell was robbed of emmys/globes for six years straight bc men are scared of female characters who aren’t nice or forgiveable

-The Haunting of Hill House (2018): i love horror movies/tv/books and am so often disappointed but damn did thohh blow me away. Such a good story on top of having some genuinely scary scenes and an emotional plot line. Also like every other wlw out there im in love with theo crain

-She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018-): Last minute end of the year addition! I was so pleasantly surprised by spop since its been a long time since i was actually impressed with an american animated show. but yall Noelle Stevenson truly blessed us and i’ve been obsessed with this show for the last few weeks. I cant wait to see more in 2019. 

-Broad City (2014-): yall im so in love with abbi jacobson and i really loved s4 of broad city. so fucking funny and i’m going to miss the hell out of this show when it ends in 2019

**Special mention to the sense8 series finale. I cried hard for the entire two hours and as much as i wish we could have more, i think sense8 ended with a perfect episode and it will always have a place in my heart

***i didn’t include it bc we’re in the middle of a content drought but i still love yuri on ice with my entire damn heart and rewatched s1 multiple times this year. 

Books: i read like 5 books this year its embarrassing

-The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee: such amazing historical fiction. Mackenzi does such a good job including queer/poc rep in a positive way while also making it feel historically accurate. this series is hilarious and smart and i loved it

-Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi: I saw Tomi speak on a panel at Yallfest last year before this book even came out and when she described this as ATLA but set in West Africa it immediately jumped to the top of my tbr for 2018. and yall it was so fucking good. amazing world building, great characters, and an exciting plot. im so hype for the sequel’s release in march

Music: this was a great year for music yall

-Eurus-The Oh Hellos: the Oh Hellos are my favorite band but Eurus is by far my favorite album of theirs. I love the sound, the lyrics continuously move me and have me feeling every emotion possible. (however Dear Wormwood was my most listened to song of the year, Grow was a close second)

-Go Easy Little Doves-Brooke Waggoner: ive been a fan of brooke’s work for a long time but this year i took the time to go back and really listen to this album and i fell in love with it

-Expectations-Hayley Kiyoko: its 20gayteen and lesbian jesus blessed us with this album. I love it and i love her. I saw hayley in concert in may and it was a great experience.

What motivates me to learn? Pt 3

My inspirations. Now, when I say this, I mean the people I look up to. I look up to my mother the most due to her issues she’s had in life and how she’s able to still go to work, raise us and keep a house, two cars and a marriage going. If I can be like her when I have my own family, I would be extremely pleased. Other inspirations I have are celebrities which seems very generic and basic but these are people who truly inspire me and are the reason I am the person I am today. My first inspiration is BTS. A Korean group formed in 2013 which has gained worldwide success which is well deserved. I had found them in 2017 which was probably the right time in my life to find them because I had all the stress of GCSE, starting college and the issues of myself that grew over many years. I think that what originally drew me to them was their music and as impossible as that may sound since I know a lot of people say BTS is only popular for their looks, I simply cant agree with such an silly statement. I don’t speak Korean so I couldn’t understand their lyrics so to me, it was their music. But the more I got into the group, the more I found myself looking into lyrics of songs id play more of and investigated the group themselves. I found myself loving them, instead of just liking them. The group members had gone through such personal and upsetting issues but still never gave up and fought for their dreams. The company they are signed with was going bankrupt before BTS got formed and thanks to their success, the company is now one of the 5 major music companies in South Korea, along with companies like SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. This can be seen in old videos of BTS where they are seen in very small, and cramped places. Not only that but some of the members have been very open about their mental health issues they suffer/suffered with. Park Jimin opened up about him suffering with an eating disorder for many years. Kim Namjoon and Min Yoongi opened up about suffering with depression. What I think is powerful is their three albums they realised which was about loving yourself. Love Yourself: Her released on September 18th 2017, Love Yourself: Tear released on May 18th 2018 and their final album of the series Love Yourself: Answer released on August 24th 2018. These albums were created as a way to teach us fans how to love ourselves, with major themes like heartbreak, betrayal and eventually self-love, they certainly showed us that as difficult as it can be, loving ourselves is the only way to live life properly and happily.

This lead to two world tours ( I  had been fortunate to attend both in London) Love Yourself World Tour 25 August 2018- 7 April 2019 and their other tour Love Yourself: Speak Yourself Tour 4 May 2019- 29 October 2019. Which in one of the tours, Namjoon (RM) announced how we taught him to love himself and they want to do the same. So with three albums, two tours and several members speaking out on personal issues like loving yourself, it felt almost impossible to not take inspiration from them. I find them comforting, not only when I listen to their music, watch the chorography or music videos, but even listening to them speak. Many times when I have had a panic attack or I felt really low and wanted to be happy, I’ve put their music on or watched their videos and I feel safe. I feel protected and I feel like everything will be okay when I have told myself things aren’t okay. Not to mention attending concerts, I cant properly describe it but if you’ve been to one of their concerts, you’d understand completely. Its like a bubble and the second you enter it, everything, every worry, every trouble, anything of the sort just disappears for several hours. Although it goes by quick, time almost doesn’t exist when you’re in the moment. Although ive attended two concerts, I cant tell you a lot because it feels like a blur (an amazing blur that I cant wait to experience all over again) but I can tell you I had the best time and again, it felt like a safe space, somewhere where I can be myself and where I feel the happiest. Not only that but it feels like a community, like my drama or media class. To create such an impact on not just me, but several people, with their music is truly a gift and I can only speak for myself, but ive not experienced this kind of impact in my life before. I remember from their most recent film, Break the Silence: The Movie, one of the members (Min Yoongi: Suga) mentioned how in teen years, the music we listen to, impact us for the rest of our life and how he wanted BTS to be a positive impact. Not that he’s reading this but Yoongi you have certainly made that happen in my life and for that, I’m forever grateful. Anyways, im going off track. The reason BTS are my inspiration are because their music touched my soul in a way that I cant explain and they motivated me to go after my dreams because as cheesy as it is, nothing is impossible. They taught me that I can live with my depression and still love myself enough to not give up on dreams and that I can achieve the things I put my mind to. They massively motivate me to learn, they help me out of my depressive ruts and as impossible as it seemed, they are teaching me to love myself.

lol my 2017

so i post one of these the end of each year mainly as a record for myself and its christmas eve and i can’t sleep so this seems like as good a time as any...

So January is always a time for me (lol @ starbound coming up yes i am ready) but I did the Oshow which was so great!!!! Technically its the only show that I’ve done with MUST and it was such an incredible experience. It was a lot of work but I made some great friends and learnt a lot about what it means to be in a show no one has done before. O show led to me starting the Thespian Pedestrian radio show which was a lot of work at times but it was really good and I’m so proud of how far we came with that show over the year. 

The start of the year saw something of a tumultuous relationship end (definitely for the better). I think I learnt a lot about myself and I guess it was my first proper relationship and even if it was not great the whole way through i probably learnt stuff?? maybe??

I tried using tinder for a while which was wild but i met some interesting people and dated someone for a few weeks which was nice and included good tea but taught me how important conversation and communication is to me.

I studied music theatre at uni this year which was honestly life changing. I grew so much as a performer and discovered how much i like writing and how important musicals are to me. I realised that thing are allowed to exist purely for the sake of entertainment, something is not lesser because it is funny and enjoyed widely.

in between class I did a show that my friend dylan wrote about a tree which was ridiculous and a lot of fun. I think I’ll remember the hip hoppin possums rap for a long time. I love the cabaret festival and hope i have the opportunity to do something in it this year.

For my music theatre unit we wrote songs for a showcase at the butterfly club and i learnt that i can be funny and that my lyrics can be good. I met andrew and lucy who taught me so much and honestly changed the way i think about musicals and the way i bill myself. i never thought of myself as a writer but thanks to andrew i am now writing a musical!!! i never thought that  was something that i’d be able to do but i am! and i found a composer and there are lots of words and music is starting to happen and wow i’m really excited about this!

we did a musical as well??? andrew and lucy wrote Jack Of Two Trades which was a wild time and I learnt so much wow!!! It was A Lot but I think I am a better person because of it? I did a lot of learning by watching, observing how people react to different things and the way that people of different experiences interact with those around them. It was the first main role I’ve had since finishing school and my first ever stage kiss and it was good fun but I’m glad its over

a lot of this year was a big identity crisis trying to work out who i am but i found a time capsule i made in 2013 and little me wrote a thing about identity being something you build rather than find and that has been so good to think about. i’ve still had some tough times but generally this year has been good mental health wise. although i want to get tested for adhd because i have 0 ability to focus and i hate anything but i cant be bothered writing about that right now

i have the most gorgeous girlfriend! its been like a month and a half (officially) but things are looking good and i am a lot of feelings (but its me so who knows exactly what those feelings are not me). this is pretty unfamiliar territory and im trying to not rush into things but its me so i get excited and and dive in but yeah so far so good a relationship built on communication and care wow a blessing!!

so yeah its been a good year but a really big one and i am proud of how i coped with it all. also i work as a princess for kids parties and i’ll never make this much money again in my  life. okay sleep time or ill be awake when santa gets here

Wests life and music have combined into an ongoing piece of performance art one that appears unsustainable at this pitch

In an era when the likes of Beyoncé can release perfectly formed records without warning, the saga of Kanye Wests seventh album has been comically messy. He first announced it a year ago, under the name So Help Me God, but postponed its release by several months while renaming it Swish, Waves and, finally, The Life of Pablo.

In the weeks prior to its grandiloquent live-streamed launch at Madison Square Garden on Thursday an album playback featuring celebrity guests and an army of black models debuting Wests latest Yeezy fashion line he posted a series of perplexingly self-destructive tweets on topics including his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose and Bill Cosby. Even for a man who clearly subscribes to Oscar Wildes dictum, There is only thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about, it was a bizarre display.

West, 38, is arguably the most important pop artist of his era and certainly the most compelling, for good or ill. He speaks, and indeed acts, in superlatives. In recent years he has described himself, not always entirely seriously, as the greatest living rock star on the planet, the new Steve Jobs, a potential US president and, simply, the nucleus. Inevitably, he inspires extreme reactions.

When he was booked for last years Glastonbury festival, more than 130,000 people signed a petition calling for an insult to music fans all over the world to be dropped. The vehemence of such attacks on an apologetically outspoken black man doubtless had a racist dimension but that alone does not explain why the rapper is such a uniquely polarising figure.

West was brought up to achieve great things. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, but raised in Chicago by his mother, Donda, an academic, he was given the name Kanye meaning only one Omari wise man and she taught him above all to love himself. In her memoir Raising Kanye, Donda wrote that West inherited from his father Ray, a former member of the Black Panther party, little patience for what he thinks is unjust. Wests kindergarten teacher said to Donda: Kanye certainly doesnt have any problem with self-esteem, does he?

That dude was focused since he was a shorty because he knew what he wanted to do and he had a mother who supported the shit out of him, his friend and fellow rapper GLC once told Complex magazine.

After enrolling at art college in 1997, West dropped out to pursue production work for the likes of Jay Z, with a signature sound based on accelerated soul samples, and then fought doggedly to be taken seriously as a rapper.

I realised that he was going to make it happen and he didnt mind being an asshole, Damon Dash, Jay Zs partner in Roc-A-Fella Records, told Complex. If you dont mind being an asshole, youre not going to lose. He wasnt scared, he had gall. A decade later, West told the New York Times: I knew I was going to make it this far; I knew that this was going to happen.

In October 2002, West was involved in a car crash that shattered his jaw and changed his life. He was convinced that God had saved his life and that he needed to write more profound lyrics. He described this epiphany in his 2003 single Through the Wire: a superheros origin story in which he emerges from a life-threatening accident stronger than ever. I knew I was dealing with a different human being after the accident, his managerGee Roberson told Complex. From that day forth, it was game on.

Unlike his mentor Jay Z, the middle-class West couldnt draw on a violent, hardscrabble youth for credibility so he had to create his own drama, trumpeting his talent and ambition to a degree that was unusual even by hip-hops self-aggrandising standards.

Im the closest that hip-hop is getting to God, he told journalists at an album playback in 2005. Talking to the Guardian afterwards, he described his florid braggadocio as both a form of self-motivation and a theatrical performance. Its like Im walking on this tightrope. Its like, damn, what if he falls? And if I do make it, its like, damn, he made it! But either way youre saying damn. Everybody else is just walking on the ground.

West backed up his rhetoric by constantly redefining what hip-hop could be. The College Dropout (2004) bridged the gulf between mainstream rappers and socially conscious underground MCs. The lavish Late Registration (2005) was co-produced by thefilm score composer Jon Brion. The Daft Punk-sampling, Nietzsche-quoting hit Stronger, from Graduation (2007), began hip-hops lucrative liaison with EDM. Most of its current stars, including Drake and Kendrick Lamar, walked through doors that West opened.

West is a tireless enthusiast with constantly expanding tastes and an ear for whats next. He has been adept at choosing collaborators, from big names such as Rihanna and Daft Punk to up-and-comers such as Arca and Kid Cudi, and taking inspiration from fashion, cinema, architecture and visual art. He is a famous perfectionist who claimed to have mixed his single Stronger 75 times before he was satisfied.

Logic would seemingly state that an album with so many people working on it would sound disjointed, but what Kanye manages to do is get the best out of everyone working towards one sound, the producer Evian Christ told Pitchfork in 2013. You cant really overstate how difficult it is to do that.

West is also an unpredictable lyricist who is equally capable of self-aware jokes, crass, misogynist punchlines and eloquent examinations of race and class. Early in his career, he spoke out against homophobia in hip-hop and blurted out George Bush doesnt care about black people during a telethon for victims of Hurricane Katrina, although he has only sporadically engaged with politics since. He is often at his best when he is being inappropriate. (Five years later, Bush called the incident the all-time low of his presidency.)

Wests behaviour changed dramatically after Donda Wests death in November 2007, from heart disease. He rarely talks about the loss but last year told Q that he blamed himself: If I had never moved to LA shed be alive. West became a more haunted and guarded figure, returning to music with 808s & Heartbreak (2008), a brave, introspective album that featured more Auto-Tuned singing than rapping and paved the way for Drake and The Weeknd.

The loss of his mother invited sympathy but the next turning point in Wests life inspired fury and derision. In 2009, he interrupted Taylor Swifts acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, bringing to the boil a long-simmering backlash. (West ungallantly references the incident on his new song Famous.) He retreated to his bunker if Hawaii can be called a bunker and made his decadent epic My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) with a legion of collaborators including Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver and Elton John. He later described it as a long backhanded apology.

In recent years, Wests ambition has become both grander and more diffuse. During interviews and concerts to promote Yeezus (2013), an audaciously abrasive electro-punk primal scream that he called a protest to music, he delivered long, furious monologues about his struggle to break into the fashion industry.

He increasingly seems more interested in clothes than in music Right now, over 70% of my focus is on apparel, he told Paper magazine and much more besides. He has compared himself to such world-changing figures as Picasso and Walt Disney, befriended the tech stargazer Elon Musk, and talked about his ambition to inspire an army of risk-taking cultural soldiers. You can see the growth from Im gonna be this great artist to I wanna do something that ignites a fire in peoples souls, he told Q.

However much credit West gets, it is never enough. In a 2013 interview he compared his critics to the eight-grade basketball coach who would not include him in the team even though he hit every shot. The next year, he made the team. West is driven by the desire to prove his doubters wrong, and fired up by his previous ability to do so.

While most high-profile artists accept that they cannot please everybody, West craves approval from establishment institutions that he appears to hate, from the Grammy awards to European fashion houses, as a point of principle. I dont care about the Grammys, he told the New York Times. I just would like for the statistics to be more accurate.

It is unclear what will happen when West can no longer hit every shot. The singles he released last year, including collaborations with Paul McCartney, were coolly received. His Glastonbury performance promised to be either a triumph or a disaster but, most reviewers agreed, fell somewhere in-between. Pitchforks Jayson Greene wrote: He is responsible for the current zeitgeist, but listening to his slightly confused new material, you get the distinct sense that hes struggling to find his current footing in it.

Reading Wests recent tweets, it is impossible to work out exactly what he is trying to achieve. He is clearly a more volatile and erratic character than he used to be. Marriage and fatherhood are often stabilising influences but marrying Kim Kardashian in 2014 has pitched West into a tabloid world with an endless appetite for gossip. It is unlikely that he could retreat from the spotlight, as he did in 2009, even if he wanted to.
