I'm seeing some frustration over fandom creatives expressing anger or distress over people feeding their work into ChatGPT. I'm not responding to OP directly because I don't want to derail their post (their intent was to provide perspective on how these models actually work, and reduce undue panic, which is all coming from a good place!), but reassurances that the addition of our work will have a negligible impact on the model (which is true at this point) does kind of miss the point? Speaking for myself, my distress is less about the practical ramifications of feeding my fic into ChatGPT, and more about the principle of someone taking my work and deliberately adding it to the dataset.

Like, I fully realize that my work is a drop in the bucket of ChatGPT's several-billion-token training set! It will not make a demonstrable practical difference in the output of the model! That doesn't change the fact that I do not want my work to be part of the set of data that the ChatGPT devs use for training.

According to their FAQ, ChatGPT can and will use user input to train itself. The terms and conditions explicitly state that they save your chats to help train and improve their models. (You can opt-out, but sharing is the default.) So if you're feeding a fic into ChatGPT, unless you've explicitly opted out, you are handing it to the ChatGPT team and giving them permission to use it for training, whether or not that was your intent.

Now, will one fic make a demonstrable difference in the output of the model? No! But as the person who spent a year and a handful of months laboring over my fic, it makes a difference to me whether my fic, specifically, is being used in the dataset. If authors are allowed to have a problem with the ChatGPT devs for scraping millions of fics without permission, they're also allowed to have a problem with folks handing their individual fics over via the chat interface.

I do want to add that if you've done this to a fic, please don't take this as me being upset with you personally! Folks are still learning new information and puzzling out what "good" vs. "bad" use is, from an ethical standpoint. (Heck, my own perspective on this is deeply based on my own subjective feelings!) And we certainly shouldn't act like one person feeding a fic into ChatGPT has the same practical negative impact, on a broad societal scale, as a team using a web crawler to scrape five billion pieces of artwork for Stable Diffusion.

The point is that fundamentally, an ethical dataset should be obtained with the consent of those providing the data. Just because it's normalized for our data to be scraped without consent doesn't make it ethical, and this is why ChatGPT gives users the option to not share data— there is actually a standardized way (robots.txt) for website servers to set policies for how bots/crawlers can interact with them, for exactly this reason— and I think fandom artists and authors are well within their rights to express a desire for opting out to be the socially-respected default within the fandom community.

On my walk home from the cafe I was thinking about Sanji (as one does) and how every influence in his life for 19 years screamed at him to hunker down, stay silent, and never appear weak.

As much as I love Zeff and know he loved Sanji, it's clear he has such a straight-laced and unflinching view of masculinity and what it means to be a man. The environment on the Baratie was an extension of that.

It was a machismo world where affection was hidden behind kicks to the head and insults. The kind of environment where cutting your hand or something gets a response of "what? You call that an injury? Don't cry over nothing". Where outright kindness has to be dragged out of people, and then immediately covered up with a half-baked insult.

Throw into that environmemt a little boy who is desperate to prove he's not the failure he was told he was, and out pops a man who wears his heart on his sleeve for "acceptable manly emotions" but who hides real emotions behind anger, and hides pain (physical or emotional) altogether so as not to seem weak.

Tack onto that the idea that the only surefire way to show love is through self sacrifice (his mom + Zeff), then of course Sanji will be all sorts of jacked up.

We see throughout the series how Sanji is so unwilling to be vulnerable or to even admit he's feeling hurt at all. Plaster a smile on, make some comment about loving women, and voila! He's the man's man everyone expects. No need to worry about him. After all: he's strong.

I’m always happy to provide context for my content and chat about the quality of my pet care, but I would rather not involve a third party. It’s easy for videos to be misconstrued out of context, and in the past I’ve had folks jumping to conclusions regarding my pet care due to the input of similar blogs. I’m sure everyone involved in these blogs are well meaning, but in the past I’ve found that without the context from knowing the cats or discussing with the owner sometimes incorrect info can be shared and then people can act a little… white knight-y.

Fated Marks

After an alliance is forged and their shared enemy is defeated, the Autobots and Decepticons are still left with a dying planet.

Desperate for a solution, in an attempt to strengthen their truce, both Megatron and Optimus venture into the core of Cybertron to speak with Primus. Perhaps they will stir long enough for a conversation while in the presence of the Matrix; perhaps a certain warlord is determined to will them into awakening just to give them a piece of his processor...

Well, whatever the reason, Primus does speak at them. That is to say, both mechs are pretty sure they're not following the same thread of conversation, but they managed to get their point across. Cybertron is dying, their people have been at war, and everyone wants to come home. Primus understands. They're clearly happy that the Cybertronians have returned-- and they want to help!

After a show of rumbling and shaking and some flashes of light, Primus goes silent once more. Confused, Optimus and Megatron return from the core to find traces of natural resources being replenished!

For the next few days, scientists from both sides study the progress of the planet's healing. Ecosystems are being revitalized, within weeks fuel has become abundant, and soon everyone gets to work repairing the cities and towns in order to settle in.

But one day, everyone starts to notice these weird marks on their bodies. Some have it on their arms or wrist, others have them in more hard-to-reach places, which is partly why they hadn't been noticed right away. The marks appeared at some point, and continued to get darker over time, like a developing ink, and nobody knew what they were! Where did they come from? It seemed like each one was different!

But later it's discovered that's not the case-- each mark matches at least one other Cybertronian's mark. But what could it possibly mean?? Well, after careful scientific research, it was concluded that these marks...

... were pairing you with your ideal conjux.

Turns out, one of Primus' gifts that gave their people a fresh start was meant to encourage happy, healthy bonds-- essentially letting love grow!

But to Megatron, that's utter nonsense. Despite Soundwave's additional efforts, he hasn't spotted a match to his mark, so it's become a rather irritating blemish that refuses to be buffed away...

Optimus doesn't even think he has a mark-- not one he can see after a quick inspection, anyway. He concludes that it's part of his duty as Prime; maybe he's not meant to have a conjux, and instead should focus his attention on serving all of Cybertron and their people. Resigned as he is to his role, he can't help but feel a bit envious of everyone else finding their partners...

(But maybe he should look a bit harder for his mark... or have someone look for him... 👀)
