ghost events vs ghost hunts in phasmophobia
as i've been playing phasmophobia for 3 months now but i still don't know the the differences between a ghost hunt or an event in phasmophobia, here's a little guide to know when a hunt or event is happening and some tips! (i will be leaving my receipts and sources, don't worry <3)
ghost events
what is a ghost event?
a ghost event is a manifestation of the ghost that you can see and hear without using any equipment (i.e. dots projector, spirit box, parabolic microphone etc.).
the ghost may also interact with the environment during an event or hunt (like moving objects, opening/closing doors, flicking light switches, turning on radios, making phones ring, turning on tvs/computer monitors, fuse box turning on/off, a musical instrument playing, a rocking chair moving, a grandfather clock chiming, a teddy bear giggling or moving, car alarms blaring, a shower or tap being turned on/off, window/mirror knocks, a mannequin moving etc.) source
how do you know a ghost event is happening?
first, an emf reader will generate a reading of 4 at the start of the event and the ghost will perform the event to one random player within the investigate area (e.g. the ghost will walk towards one person but the event will still happrn if other players are there and everyone near to where the event is happening will also be able to see the event happening).
ghost events are random but are more likely to happen with lower sanity. source
what does a ghost event look like?
the ghost can perform many different events.
one of them being a "singing event". for male ghosts they will hum and female ghosts will sing ring a ring o' roses (or apparently it's called ring around the rosie in america???? i didn't know that!!) youtube ghosts won't ever hum or sing the song during a hunt!
ghosts will either stay stationary or walk towards someone (they are the random player who triggered the event!). if they walk towards someone, you will not hear heartbeats (unlike in hunts) and when the ghost gets close enough to you, it will disappear and hiss sharply. the ghost will also walk towards you at a speed of 1.7m/s, regardless of ghost type!
the ghost can turn the light in the room off, or the lights will glow red during the event after turning on or the lights will flicker then shatter at the end of the event.
the ghost will appear either in its full form, as a shadowy figure or as a transparent/clear apparition.
the ghost can shut the doors, including the exit doors but will not lock any of them in the same area as the event (i.e. if you're in a room with one door, it will shut that door or if you're in a hallway/corridor it will shut all the doors around you including the exit doors).
electric equipment will malfunction (i.e. torches will flicker, radios will sound staticy, emf readers will freak out, cameras will glitch out etc.).
light switches cannot be toggled in the room where the ghost event took place if it's a non-singing stationary event.
events can also drain your sanity a lot :( source
there is also an event where the lights shatter (it's scary as shit) source
ghost hunt
what is a ghost hunt?
a hunt is the only time when a ghost can kill players, yikes. there are cursed hunts too that happen when you interact with cursed objects and they're very similar to how regular hunts work (except for the grace period and sanity thresholds - my advice is just don't interact with cursed objects unless you want a hunt to happen lol).
during a hunt, the ghost will appear, lights will flicker (although that hasn't always happened when i've been in hunts...), electronic equipment will malfunction and all exit doors will close and LOCK (i.e. there will be a clicking sound of the door locking and the little white padlock will show when you try to interact with the exit doors). source
how do you know a ghost hunt is happening?
hunts (except for cursed hunts) cannot trigger while the setup phase is happening (0-5 minutes depending on difficulty - you can see the setup phase timer in the van). source
there is a sanity hunt threshold, for most ghosts it's below or at 50% (the 50% is the average team sanity, not an individual person's sanity) but some ghosts have different thresholds and abilities where they can override the threshold (e.g. a demon's threshold is 70%, a deogen's is 40% and a candle blowing out can cause an onryo to hunt regardless of the average sanity). source
there is a also a 25 second cooldown between hunts (but this doesn't apply to cursed hunts) and the ghost won't always start another hunt after it's cooldown is over because hunts are random (although a lower sanity can increase the chances of a hunt happening)! source
during a hunt, the activity will be at 10 on the monitor in the van (although it can also be at 10 if the ghost is very active so a 10 doesn't always mean it's a hunt, e.g. the poltergeist moving a lot of objects in one burst can appear as a 10). source
what does a ghost hunt look like?
there is a grace period to every hunt (including cursed hunts) that ranges from 0-5 seconds depending on difficulty/custom mode in which the ghost will remain invisible and unable to move (or kill anyone)! but at the start of the grace period all the exit doors will lock and shut so no one can leave or enter the investigation area so you have to be ready to run or hide. during the grace period, the ghost can't detect players or equipment so spend that time turning off equipment and getting out of the ghost's line of sight (either by hiding or running away). once the grace period begins, an emf reader will give a reading of 4 where the ghost is standing. source
hunts can last from 15 seconds to 1 minute depending on map size and difficulty for all ghosts (e.g. for the lowest difficulty level: amateur and for small maps like a house the hunt will last 15 seconds). cursed hunts will be 20 seconds longer (so a cursed hunt in a small map on amateur will be 35 seconds). source
the event will always start from where the ghost is currently standing (it doesn't always start from the ghost room) so use your emf reader to find out where it is (or if you know vaguely where it is before the hunt starts by using the emf reader or knowing it interacted with something etc.)! source
ghosts can't teleport during hunts, yippee, but it can phase through doors and furniture, yikes. once the grace period ends, the ghost will either start randomly wandering around or it will chase a player/go to a point where it detected someone or an electronic device. source
when it detects a player (either because the player spoke or used an electronic device) the ghost will chase you until it can't detect you anymore, then it will search the vicinity before wandering around again. if it detects more than one player, it will go for the closest one, oop. the ghost's vision is 360 degrees so even if you are behind or to the right/left of the ghost, it can still see you! source
the ghost has a 50% change of remembering a place where it detected a player before the hunt ended, including the place where it killed a player. so if you hid somewhere and the ghost saw you but didn't catch you, don't hide there again! (and don't stand by your dead teammates...) but the ghost can only remember one and it cannot remember the same place across multiple hunts so it will change every hunt. source
sadly, ghosts can open locker or closest doors if you're hiding in them :( source
some ghosts have different speeds during hunts, for example, a jinn's speed is 2.5m/s if it can see a player, a moroi's speed increases the loer the average team sanity and a raiju moves at 2.5m/s if it can detect an electronic device. source
ghosts can still intereact with objects that are near it during hunts e.g. throwing objects, opening/closing doors (except the exit doors which will stay closed until opened after the hunt) etc. source
you can hear the ghosts footstops during hunts (and they get louder the nearer they are to you, spooky) and it will have one random vocalisation (but remember it won't hum if it's a male ghost or sing ring a ring o' roses if it's a female ghost!) that again will get louder the nearer it is to you. source
the ghost's figure will also flicker in and out during a hunt.
the light switches cannot be toggled during a hunt in any room.
a hunt will end if one player dies (if you have this setting on), if not one else is left alive or if it runs out of time. the exit door can be unlocked and opened again and all lights will turn off. source
and finally, the differences between events and hunts
i mentioned that the ghost will either hum if it's a male ghost or sing ring a ring o' roses if it's a female ghost during an event, and this will only happen during an event! some people call it "safe sounds". so if you hear those two vocalisations, you're safe! take a picture :) source
related to the last one, a ghost will vocalise during a hunt but it will be unique to the hunt and will repeat for all hunts, so if you've survived a hunt (congrats!) and know what the vocalisation was and hear it again, run! here's an example of some ghost hunt vocalisations on youtube (bare in mind this video was posted 2 years ago and the game has had many updates since then! also any of the clips where the ghost is seen without moving to attack the player, it's actually an event not a hunt e.g. the sharp breath and the singing of ring a ring o' roses) source
i mentioned that the light switch cannot be toggled during events in the room that the event is occuring but in hunts all and any light switches will be untoggable. source
as i mentioned, the door can lock during events, however it does not lock. the exit doors will always shut and lock during a hunt! it will even produce a "click" sound and it will be the sound you hear where you first unlock the door. source
ghosts can cause interactions during both events and hunts but interactions will not occur within the hunt grace period so if you hear/see an interaction in less than the grace period then you know it's an event. if no interactions occur within the grace period, you know it's a hunt. source
related to the last one, but if you see the ghost appear within the grace period, its an event because the ghost will be invisible during the hunt grace period. source
related again but if you hear footsteps within the grace period, it's a moving event not a hunt because the ghost cannot move during the hunt grace period. source
as i mentioned previously, the ghost will flicker in and out during a hunt while being solid during an event (whether it's shadowy, transparent/clear or fully formed). source
related to the previous point, ghosts will always appear in their full form in hunts but can either appear in their full form, shadowy or transparent/clear. source
as i mentioned, this one hasn't always happened to me during hunts (maybe it was a glitch ?) but during events the lights will immediately turn off but during hunts the lights will stay on and flicker when the ghost is near (only if the lights were still on before the hunt began that is). source
i mentioned previously that some events will be different to hunts, as in if the lights turn red or if the ghost causes the light bulbs to scatter, then that's an event because the ghost cannot do those things during hunts! source
you can only hear the ghost's footsteps during hunts and never during events (if it's a moving event). i'm not quite sure if this one is 100% because i don't think i've ever heard footsteps during an event but it might just be me not remembering correctly or i haven't paid enough attention to it lol. source
now, here are some tips!
listen out of the two "safe sounds"! this tip only really helps if it's a vocalisation event though :(
if the ghost has hunted before, listen out for it's hunt vocalisations. this tip only helps if the ghost has hunted before :(
try toggling multiple light switches on/off, if there is neither sound nor animation then it's a hunt. also a good way to know if a hunt has ended! this tip is pretty good because almost all rooms will have at least one light switch/lamp in it! the difficultly would be trying to find it though... you can make sure you are always stood near/next to a light switch or at least know where they are!
listen out for the click of the exit doors locking! this tip is only good if you have good headphones and your volume is up loud enough... you can always go to the exit door to check if it's locked or not but be aware that if the ghost detects you and chases you, you will have limited places to run/hide!
if you notice an interaction happen within the grace period, it's an event! this tip is not all that useful because the grace period is often too short for you to notice if something's even happened...
if the ghost is flickering in and out then it's a hunt but if it appears solidly then it's an event but this tip can be deadly because if you can see the ghost... it might already be too late...
again, if you see the ghost in its full form, it might be a hunt but if you see it as a shadowy figure or as a transparent/clear one then it's definitely an event. but this only works if you can actually see the ghost lol.
if the lights stay on, it's a hunt but if they go off then it's an event. this tip is a bit so-so because, as i've said, i've been in hunts where the lights haven't flickered at all, regardless of the ghost being in the same room as me (i mean it killed me immediately after so), the lights just constantly stayed on without flickering and they were turned on before the hunt began. you can make sure that at least one light is always turned on to see if it goes off or flickers (and you can also tell if the fuse box has been turned off too!)
notice the nature of the event/hunt, if the ghost causes a light bulb to shatter or the room turns red then it's definitely an event. this tip only works if the ghost is doing those unique events though...
if you hear footstops at all, it's a hunt. again iffy with this because i can't remember if this is true or not...
all other tips i can think of are not unique to events/hunts (e.g. if your electronic equipment is malfunctioning but this can happen in both events and hunts so... it's not very useful) so i will leave this here!
