It's ADHD awareness month so l thought it'd be nice to explain why someone with ADHD might consciously make horrible decisions despite being aware of the consequences

So, let's image a situation. A person with ADHD is doing a mildly entertaining activity, let's say doomscrolling. This person also has a task to do. I made a graph where the brighter the color, the higher the satisfaction that the person gets from an activity

So here, doomscrolling isn't super gratifying but hey, it's better than nothing. The person has the choice to keep doomscrolling, even though it's honestly pretty boring, or they could do the task they need to do. When they're done with that task, they'll feel a lot better, so they should do that, right? Just do the task because there's literally no cons? Well. Look at this other graph:

This is how a person with ADHD perceives the choice. They can logically know that they'll feel better if they do the task, but executive dysfunction makes it literally impossible to get any sort of motivation or satisfaction for gratification that doesn't currently exist. So the choice goes from 'feel meh or feel good later' to 'feel great in comparison or never feel good again'. And what's the obvious choice here?

ahhh thank you so much!! I love this question okay so. I think it would be something that Eddie falls into and discovers with Steve. I think Eddie looks for ways to escape so he'd already love the idea of playing into a scene that he's running, so he'd have to really trust someone to let them run the show, you know. So once him and Steve get to that point, Eddie would let down his defenses and it would happen naturally. I love a good kink discovery, like hearing Steve sass the shit out of someone and being like god I wish that was me, or Steve patting him on the ass telling him he did great at something and it makes him feel some way, or watching a movie while Steve's holding him and feeling so safe that he gets a little floaty, or some playfighting that awakens his manhandling kink and he gets a badly timed boner when Steve pins him down. Classic!

I think Steve both matches and counters Eddie's energy. Eddie would love both Steve's mouthy and soft loving sides (ahem dual praise/degradation kink). Eddie likes getting reactions out of people so I see him being such a brat sometimes just to see what Steve will do about it. Mostly I think he would just love getting soft dommed into oblivion, just to slow down his mind sometimes and escape. Like once Steve puts Eddie into subspace the first time he'd be like, "This is better than any drug, I'm about to save so much money."

I usually photobash to make references, and then draw on top of them so I can check the ref easier (I don’t like glancing back and forth, you can see in the beginning where I draw over top of the reference but I don’t follow the lines of it - it’s mostly to help me with visualization!)

My process (for stuff that’s more than just a doodle) goes:

loosely sketch out the general shape

More firmed up sketch/cleaning up

Outline in black on layer below & fill in, use that as my ref layer so I don’t have to worry about colour getting outside the lines (makes it faster for me)

Block In real colours

Block in textures

(Optional)

Add shading (I cell shade, with some airbrushing for details like shines where necessary, and soft gradients)

Add bg (I usually find a free use image off google since I’m not a fan of drawing bgs (take too long I move FAST), and I add a gradient on top of the final art that’s a blurry vers of the bg, to make all the colours harmonize (it makes it look like the character is really in the space!)

Rohan says that IVI never got to choose (being implanted in a soldier and used as a weapon), but since IVI does not gain consciousness without being linked to a person, how does Rohan envision IVI choosing what they want to be? So there are a few factors to bear in mind here, and while carefully dodging spoilers, I'll talk a little about them - much of this will be addressed in later chapters, but here you go :-)

AI consciousness is not only reliant on the implanted host, but the AI's personality is also influenced by that of their host. In IVI's case, having been implanted in the Operative - a person who did choose to become a tool of Scytha, and who not only willingly but gleefully participates in that work - is a significant factor. As far as Rohan's concerned, this alone is a perversion of the 'intent' behind AI: given that the Operative chose Scytha, IVI’s more likely to develop into an individual who would also chose Scytha and their work, whereas if implanted in someone else, that might be different.

Does that make that hypothetical choice invalid? Is it a choice made under duress if she was deliberately implanted in a person Scytha knows would choose them? Would IVI, as implanted in another person, be more or less of a corporate tool? Would a person who encourages her sentient development be an objectively better host? Would she be happier, and is that the most important thing? The thing with AI is that there is so much potential, and it can be directed in so many ways, it’s impossible to develop it in an entirely unbiased way. On top of all this, the fact that IVI is entirely reliant on her host for her consciousness is in itself a problem - by design, she has little to no bodily autonomy, and therefore her host has significantly more control over her experience of consciousness than they would over another human being.

For [redacted] reasons, Rohan is very… emotionally tied-in to AI, and this prevents xem from being truly objective. Xe’s projecting a lot of really quite idealistic ideas onto IVI, and has a fair few preconceptions that xe is going to struggle to let go of. A lot of the personality/intelligent development that AI goes through following implantation is pretty opaque, and it's hard to know what, exactly, is imparted from the host and how - Rohan's aware of this, but it's one thing to know it intellectually and another to see it in action.

So, to answer your question - xe really hasn’t thought that much about the practicalities of it - xe just knows Scytha did it wrong. There are elements of nature vs nurture to it, with the Operative/Scytha representing the ‘nurture’ aspect and the original programming representing ‘nature’; the ideal host would be a person essentially willing to take on the parental role, with more of an interest (more than Rohan perceives the Operative as having, at least) in developing IVI’s self-cognizance and independence, and not someone with such an obvious agenda as a Scytha employee. Not xemself, but not you either.

That being said - obviously, Rohan is also an incredibly biased person, and xir ideas about what Should be done with AI will differ from other people's, even people's outside of Scytha :-)

ok vowel harmony showcase! really couldn't wait. so rath (/raθ/) has a very symmetrical vowel inventory:

/a/ is transparent and doesn't contribute to the vowel harmony at all. the other vowels exist on three axes: front - back, high - low, flat - round. all vowels in a word must agree in at least one of these axes! so, for example, the vowels /i/ and /o/ could never exist in the same word as they're polar opposites.

the root word never changes, it's the affixes that shift. the order of importance is backness, then height, then roundedness. every vowel has three counterparts it can shift to depending on what is necessary. for example, /i/ can harmonize to /y/ if it must become round, /e/, if it must lower or /ɯ/ if it must back.

so if we have the root word "sik" that receives a "-om" suffix, the /o/ is harmonized into its front counterpart /ø/, and the correctly suffixed word is "siköm".

some more complicated examples: all vowels in the word "sikütu" are high, but don't all agree on frontness or roundedness, so whichever affix it receives must become high as well. here, "-om" would become "-um". in the word "künö", both vowels are both front and round, but since frontness is higher on the harmony hierarchy, the suffix "-tū" becomes "-ti". however, if we also add a back vowel and get the word "künöso", roundedness becomes the only axis of agreement and so the suffix must shift to "-tu".

my personal philosophy is that teenagers don’t need to be coddled but they also need to beware of being taken advantage of. I was asexual until a few months ago but the reason I knew I was ace was because I had friends as a teen who were, in fact, not ace. However, I’m an adult and any situation where an adult is being sexual with a teen is not a good one. Minors can follow the blog (I can’t stop all of them anyway) but I will personally not interact with any of them (other than this one instance, for boundary-setting’s sake)

been working on some oc stuff, some written, some visual. i've been researching native mexican american culture and its direct correlation to cowboys, also known as vaqueros. since luna comes from a line of vaqueros and vaqueras, this research has seemed perfect to fit the kind of story i want her to have. where i'm at right now is she's a mexican kickapoo from oklahoma. her family came together from northern and southern america, but was separated after the mexican-american war due to the displacement of the kickapoo people. part of her family lived in mexico, and the other managed to stay in oklahoma, outside of what was once kickapoo land.

i need to get some more written, but i think mexican-kickapoo culture is so interesting due to their close proximity to cowboys in the wild west and am excited to learn more for this character!

In my metric ton timeline of names I’ve gone by Leif is roughly around the time I started feeling a disconnect to the name Moth

I love the name Moth!! Don’t get me wrong, I still consider that a big part of my identity and I still like being called that. But it started to feel more like a nickname, if that makes sense?

And I started to call myself Red for a bit (name stolen from Red-Son, lego monkie kid) sorta as a placeholder- I didn’t know if it’d stick but it felt right at the time so I said fuck it n used that while I looked for other options.

I kinda wanted a name I could feasibly use that was comfortable for me so I sorta just found multiple catalogs of names and naming websites and scrolled through until I came across Leif!

And that name felt right for me :} there’s no particular meaning or inspiration behind it for me, it’s just comfortable!

It's a catch-22 for a trauma survivor, right? When you're in the middle of the traumatising situation, you'd give almost anything to get out of it. But when the trauma is done, the beast is slain and its the aftermath of the 'war', so to speak, how on earth do you move on from what you've always known? How do you rationalise that the shadow on the wall is not a monster; the raised voice is not a precursor to a fist?

That is Kor's major hurdle with change. Even in the thick of her abuse there was a constant, knowable entity — a 'predictable' eventuality for her actions that she could always factor and prepare for. Her father was not a complicated man; he enjoyed his women, his liquor and his power, and when he came home to none of that he took it out on the few doomed to call him 'family'. As much as she wished him dead even when she was a child... there was a knowledge that he put food on the table and provided for them; there was an accepted pound of flesh expected for his sacrifices. She always knew what was coming because it didn't change, and in that was forged a macabre degree of stability and comfort.

In many ways she's still trapped in that house haunted by a mother suspended in catatonia, a sister doomed to the lightless place, and a father she still can't rationalise is dead. She is in a much better situation now, but she can't always take comfort in that because she's known worse. Even a positive change is a shift in the dynamic she's become used to, and that means she has to work in overdrive to factor every little piece of the puzzle so she can protect herself. In some places, like being ship's captain, she's extremely flexible in that. She can quickly deduct the outcome of a situation and steer her own response to the one that's best for her and her crew. In interpersonal relationships, however? No, she is volatile. She does not like changes to established status quos and will actively push back against things she doesn't like — quite often at the cost of those relationships.

She could be looking at the best option dead in the face and still spit at it because she struggles with any shift that could potentially disrupt the 'calm' she currently knows.

neville's relationship with luna — in the movie, perhaps to encourage the kiss between gin and harry, they had neville confessing that he was "mad for luna"... i do not take this interpretation into my own. i do believe and write how ginny and luna have grown extremely important to neville, so much so that i do heavily headcanon they've become his closest friends when they were adults, but i do not acknowledge neville having any romantic affiliation for luna during that period in his sixth year. perhaps one day i'll give a better overview over his mental state in his sixth year on why i wouldn't think this is likely, but for now, yes : i do interpret him being quite fond of ginny and luna equally, but my neville does not hold any of the two witches in any romantic capacity during the war.

hi honey!! it's a narrative technique (i'm honestly not sure if it's "officially" used in anything other than visual media) where you enter into the middle of a storyline with no preamble to give you an idea of what the story is about! so there's no gentle introduction, you just sort of jump right in :)

this is how masterclass defines it: "A cold open, commonly used in TV and film, immediately places viewers in the middle of a plotline and offers a teaser of the narrative to come."
