KDL3 Stage 1-2, Muchimuchi's stage!

This level has.... Pitch and Chuchu iirc? But as you can see from my drawings, I went in with Nago and left with Chuchu since she's necessary to get the Heart Star.

About Chuchu-- she's 14 years old and she's a Flapjack Octopus mermaid with a rather unconvincing 'human' form... it gets the job done (allows her to walk on 2 legs) so it will have to do! She can use the Needle, Spark, and Clean abilities completely on her own, but she must rely on Kirby for the others. She's a very stubborn and short tempered girl. She doesn't like being challenged, but she's very willing to fight to make a point! She doesn't like the idea of "sharing" Kirby with others, so she gets super jealous when he hangs out with other friends. Except Pitch and Gooey. Chuchu thinks Pitch is just an annoying baby and she thinks Gooey is gross, so she doesn't see them as "competition". It's a shame, she'd probably be good friends with some of her fellow animal friends if she were to give them a chance!

Regarding Chuchu and Kirby's relationship, they're like, unofficially dating sort of ??? Chuchu is obviously in love with Kirby, but Kirby doesn't know how to reciprocate and isn't even really sure if he is in love with her. I'm sure I said he's asexual before, but he might be demiromantic as well--he doesn't really know that though. Chuchu, on the other hand, claims to be straight, but she is in love with an enby so she's more bi than she realizes. It feels a bit like high school romance lol, neither of them know what they're doing rlly.

Muchimuchi is so fucking weird? I can't even rlly gijinkify him he's just a weird jelly accordion guy who likes being whipped for some damn reason. what the hell. he gives you a heart for slapping him?????? I guess he just thinks Chuchu's cute? Chuchu's fucking weirded out by a giant accordion guy giving her a heart star for slapping him tho lol.

I switched to digital because of wrist issues. I initially thought it was cuz I was coloring too hard w my colored pencils. I WAS, but I've ALSO been playing too much ctr and THATS the main thing that's been hurting me!! God fucking dammit!! I paid money for the battle pass and wanted to get my money's worth lol!!!!

Rereading/watching Calamity Trigger's Story Mode and going down every character to see some interesting tidbits I may've overlooked or get some new perspective or just plain old atm thoughts upon finishing their story. Want to get my thoughts down and ramble starting with Ragna and Jin.

Ragna's CT story is kinda... uninteresting on it's own for the most part. There's moments here and there that are fascinating particularly with the bad end he fuses with Nu and becomes "Something" with her that devolves into the Black Beast. Besides that it's a pretty straight forward introduction to Ragna as a protagonist but not so much as a character if that makes sense. It sells well the idea that he's the gruff protag on a mission with a heart of gold somewhere deep at the same time though it doesn't sell well the idea of him being the guy who can mercilessly mow down an army like how he could in his short story that ties in to CT. Like he's clearly not as stable as he appears as clear in the alt ending where he gets saved by Jubei from Hakumen but it ultimately ends up overshadowed by his feel as a protagonist.

There's two scenes that aren't interesting by themselves in the story mode but are within wider context. One of them is his scene with Rachel and her possy of Nago, Gii, and later Valkenhayn doing everything in their power to piss him off. Before some retconning later on Ragna does not recognize Valkenhayn making this their first meeting here. Between this and him not knowing Trinity as a Six Hero makes me wonder if there was originally some reason why he wouldn't know that information like it was intentionally withheld. The other scene for more peculiar reasons is the previously mentioned scene of Jubei saving Ragna for a few reasons. Despite Jubei saving him Ragna's reaction is one of anger and indignation at being saved before having a meltdown that had to be cured by going to the chinese food place with Tao. It's this and his vitriol with Rachel that really does have me believe that his relationship with them and his sanity was deteriorating bad the longer he was doing his thing. As an aside his lecture to Ragna about the adage concerning the Azure and what he should be fighting for is was weird with context. The adage "Do not mistake the Power of the Azure as your own" is fine on a surface level but really ill placed concerning the fact Ragna is having a quite literal skill issue in dealing with Hakumen and not a misuse of the Azure Grimoire. And the "What are you fighting for? You're losing sight of what's really important" bit is strange because it's obviously about having having the power of the Azure to save and protect his loved ones but Jubei himself destroyed that notion in Ragna by telling him that Saya can't be saved and leaving only his hatred of Terumi and anything related to him. Just really odd.

As a fun fact that I just realized Ragna's nickname of "Good Guy" by Tao was first coined by Rachel describing him her as a backhanded compliment over sparing Arakune.

Jin's story mode was honestly a fun read and a good introduction to him as a character. It really does sell him well as a callous dead-inside man who can only really start feeling alive once he thinks he can kill his brother again. From seeing the cold disregard he had to Bang and anything to with Ikaruga to the manic insanity he has when he deals with either Ragna or Noel is really striking. It paints well the kind of person who could make the mistakes that would make Hakumen in one timeline. Yeah I just don't have anything really negative to say in this regard.

90% it's just my weird interpretation but seeing the different facets of Jin displayed here makes it seems like he has multiple personalities. It's like he has different personalities for times and places rather than a transitory and developing one over all. From how he's a friendly and kind student back in the military academy, how he's like in when the story mode takes place, and even the nascent form of what I'd call "emo LN protag Jin" is present. I can't think of exact moments where Jin changes like Makoto does in Heart to Heart where she goes abrasive to who she later becomes. He just goes from Friendly Student Council President in his school days, to Broody LN Protag in Spiral Shift, to the Callous Arrogant Dickhead he is by CT's time and there's no in-between for any of them. Just my thoroughly wrong atm though and not a big deal.

There was a curious thing going where the narration focuses on his right hand a few times like how it was stained in Noel Vermillion's blood one in one scene or how he could only move it and not the rest of his body in another. The former could've been symbolic of his part in the burning of the church (going by a CT only interpretation and maybe killing Saya but that's bunked) but he's pretty much a non entity in terms of blame nowadays.

Surprisingly there's a brief line a dialogue from the head of the Kisaragi Family here. It's actually positive concerning his talents.

That about sums up my immeadiate thoughts. Onto Noel and Rachel next.

What do you think would be the Gokaiger’s relationship with other riders. Because they’ve met who? Gentaro? And Tsukasa and Daiki? But there are truly so many characters™️ beyond 100% friendship and 100% annoying bitch (Gentaro and Decade boys respectively). Do you think they would be friends with any of them? (This thought sponsored by the little Gokai and Build plushes that are currently sitting on my bed together)

Man, I don’t think they’ve even really met Gentarou, despite Super Hero Taisen being theoretically a Fourze movie he was more just...present for parts of it. Eiji’s the one I think they’ve really met, they got to do that rad full-team OOO transformation. (We actually have a TaJaDor Ranger Key, it’s cute.) They seemed to get along ok with him.

I hear you on the plush, too, I have some little palm-sized guys on my printer in my office, so I spend every work day chilling with Doc, Philip, Shoutaro, and Kouta.

Anyway, given the whole Super Hero Taisen incident, I imagine most pre-Fourze Riders would be a little wary of Marv, but there’s no reason I can think of why they couldn’t eventually get past that. Of course, then we run into potential personality clashes, so let’s think this out:

Kuuga--Godai would not be keen to be addressed as “Kamen Rider Kuuga,” but if the pirates can be broken of that then he’s inherently a pretty friendly guy. I suspect he’d get along especially well with Doc, given that he knows how to do basically everything.

Agito--Shouichi and Ahim were made to be friends--he’d also get along with Doc and Gai immediately, I think. Hikawa might have a difficult time adjusting to the idea of chilling with pirates, but Marvelous would definitely love teasing him. I feel like Ryou would hit it off with Joe and Luka?

Ryuki--As long as they’re not trying to kill people I think Shinji would be cool with pretty much anyone. He could write about them for ORE Journal. Ren and Luka would butt heads a little, maybe, since they’re both really cranky and aggressive.

555--Ok this one is just a recipe for disaster. Honestly I think the Gokaigers would get along better with the Orphnoch trio (Kiba and Yuka and Kaido) than with the folks at the laundromat. The thought of Joe just, punching Kusaka in the jaw is pretty life-giving though.

Blade--I feel like this one is less “Gokaigers hang out with Riders” and more “Kenzaki tries to hitch a ride off-planet and then realizes that if he leaves Earth then there’s only one Joker again.” He could give them a letter for Hajime, though.

Hibiki--I don’t know if any of the Gokaigers know how to have a dad, I think they’d be very confused by their reactions to Hibiki.

Kabuto--Either another recipe for disaster or fifteen minutes of Tendou and Marvelous having a stare-down followed by forty-five minutes of Tendou and Doc trading recipes. Ahim can make Kagami some tea, the poor guy needs it.

Den-O--Can the Den-Liner go into space? That’d be cool. Luka spends the entire time flirting with Naomi. Momotaros and Marvelous arm-wrestle. Also it occurs to me that Joe and Doc did meet the Imagins, however briefly, so they could catch up a little.

Kiva--How this goes depends entirely on whether or not there’s time-travel involved, because if they’re in the past then the whole situation immediately becomes a lost chapter of Ranma 1/2. If they’re in the present, I think Ahim would meet Wataru and immediately love him, they could have tea together in the garden. Nago would need to be restrained.

Decade--Extensively covered by canon.

W--Shoutaro is in no way prepared to meet space pirates, they’re so out-of-genre for his beautiful noir lifestyle. Meanwhile Philip would climb all over the Galleon, asking about how it works, to the entire crew’s bemusement. I suspect Terui would be a major personality crash though.

OOO--Also covered in canon.

Fourze--Friendship!

Wizard--I think they met in Super Hero Taisen Z, but I’ve blocked out most of that one out because it made no sense. Nitoh and Marvelous would hit it off immediately. Although I can also see some potential conflict between them, since Haruto’s primary color is red and Marvelous does have. Tendencies.

Gaim--I am. Genuinely tempted to write a story about the Galleon dropping anchor on Planet Helheim and immediately getting confronted by Kouta, wanting to know what the hell is up with them.

Drive--Something in my heart says that Gou and Gai would immediately be best friends.

Ghost--I mean, Takeru is inherently an amiable guy, so he’d definitely get along with all of them. What really gets me is actually the image of Joe and Makoto being introduced and hitting it off right away as in the background all of their friends try to manage this sudden case of double vision.

Ex-Aid--Luka loves men who are absolute hot messes, so I suspect she’d meet Emu and think, “ah, yes, this is a friend.” I also think she’d find Kiriya hilarious. Joe could charm Hiiro with cake. Marvelous would try to convince Parad to join the crew because he’s funny. Taiga is not allowed near this meeting.

Build--I think if he was presented with the idea that there are worlds where saving everyone doesn’t involve destroying yourself Sento might collapse. Luka would love Banjou, though. So would Ahim, I think.

Zi-O: “Oh. You’re the ones Daiki was telling Joe about.” “Oh, hey! You’re their pirate friends!” “Well, Joe and Doc are Daiki’s pirate friends. Decade and I are acquaintances at best.”

Zero-One: Still haven’t seen this one but from what I’ve gathered I think Yua would meet Ahim and Luka and immediately feel right at home.

Saber: Doc and Tetsuo would enjoy each other’s company quietly. Ren and Gai would enjoy each other’s company loudly. Rintarou and Joe would just vibe.

I went in aware of the (possible) retcons and shit but I watched the whole thing anyway. It’s some ungodly hour way past when I should’ve slept and here’s what I thought. I’m trying to be fair here when I give GG Strive’s story a 6.8/10

Visuals: This game is beautiful. 12/10

Voice cast: I enjoyed the dub. Not as much of a corny anime dub like Sign was, but the returning cast improved from that game -- or at least I thought so. 8.75/10

Soundtrack: One word: Incredible. The duo of Naoki and Aisha on vocals for all character themes -- ok they're only a duet on Ramlethal's [Necessary Discrepancy] but you know what I meant -- was a perfect choice. My favorite themes from when I played the second open beta back in mid-May were Giovanna's [Trigger] and Potemkin's [Armor-Clad Faith], but Leo's [Hellfire] really grew on me the most. 15/10

Game itself: Arcade mode was a fun challenge because I’m an idiot who did all 15 but I got really tired of fighting Nago over and over again. I’m not that great so I’m not worrying about getting the “Messiah Will Not Come” trophy where you fight him but he’s got an infinite blood gauge. Survival gives a good chunk of the lifebar back without making it too easy -- and the “mysterious challenger” at stage 10 being a shadowy Sol with neon red was an okay way to signal a checkpoint. 9/10 I’m not doing online any time soon because I don’t have a wired connection but I hear it’s ass and the tower placement is a complete lie.

Anywho, now on to the real post:

For a finale, the story was... slightly below average. But I’ll be honest here, I kinda had high expectations because of the hype from the past two (?) years, five if you count the total time between Rev2 and Strive's release dates.

The last time I was this critical of a sequel’s story was the gap between Borderlands 2 and 3, which was seven years. I'm going off on a tangent here but I'll sum it up so if you're not familiar with Borderlands you'll have an idea of what I'm taking about. In Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel, the Watcher (Eridian? that saved Athena from execution after telling Lilith and company of her adventures on Elpis with Nisha, Wilhelm, Timothy, Aurelia, and Claptrap) warned "Now's not the time for bickering, Vault Hunters. War is coming, and you will need all the Vault Hunters you can get". BL3 rolls around and there was no big war. Instead, we got a poorly delivered dumpster fire of a main campaign that spanned five planets and the main villains were some bratty livestreamer Sirens that run a planet wide cult. Seriously? The cast was poorly handled there too but I'll stop here.

In the case of comparison to another fighting game’s story, the game that comes to mind is Tekken 7 because if they aren’t a Mishima or Kazama or someone else in that fucked up family that’s plot relevant, they were given a shitty one-fight episode. Sure Nina and Claudio were in the main story mode but that's the thing: they were just there. The returning (dlc) series veterans, such as Anna, Lei, Marduk, and all the way to Zafina plus the newcomers Leroy, Lidia, Fahkumram, and Kunimitsu II weren't given much aside from a brief story snippet. Dare I say it but SFV did their new seasons newcomers and returning fighters justice as they all got episodes of their own. You read that right. Street Fighter V was better to its cast than Tekken 7 and Guilty Gear -Strive-.

Unlike the Xrd games, watching the story does not get you any money. The only difference I saw right after was that the Strive correlation chart updated. For what it’s worth, they could’ve done something like DBFZ’s story clearance unlocking a new character, or do an alternate costume where the outfit Frederick wears in the ending (and upon further inspection is the very same one he wore in the flashback) is useable in fights (it’d be hilarious but a good detail added in if you were to select that option but the name plate doesn’t display “Sol” lmao). If Ky has a palette that puts him in an open button white shirt, jeans, and what look like work boots, then let me play in the ending's lab coat, tanktop, and jeans dammit.

I kept track of how many of the playable cast showed up and played some part. Everyone except Ramlethal, May, and Faust appeared in the story -- these three were reduced to credit image cameos >:( Ram’s seen with Elphelt and Sin, while Ky and Dizzy are in the background. May’s with her crew, and Faust is in the desert somewhere or some shit with Chronus.

But even if they did show up, nobody else except like five people did jack shit. Giovanna, bless her heart, was absent for a long period then showed up to fight Nagoriyuki (who eventually sided with the good guys) but got her ass beat after he faked surrender. Potemkin helped but spent most of his time cruising at high speed trying to get to the White House. Ky and Jack-O didn’t arrive until the end either. Axl -- or should I say Will -- finally got to see Megumi again at the cost of I-No’s defeat. The dude got his girlfriend back at the loss of someone he considered a friend but the delivery felt forced as it was confirmed as she was dying -- wasn't part of her character that she has no recollection of a past? Her suddenly remembering a past boyfriend and being able to describe his appearance didn't really make much sense.

Chipp and Anji were in that comical highway chase scene, but then Anji's just wherever while Chipp's in the Pentagon control room. I get that someone had to stay behind and watch from the other side -- this role landing with Leo as he, Millia, and Zato were overseeing commentating on events from the castle’s war room like Brock and Misty during Ash's battles in the OG season of the Pokemon anime, while Daryl was at the G4 conference and Ky was on his way to the fight -- but the pacing and usage of the cast in this story was a mess. Yeah sure it has most of the GG cast in this installment's playable roster present but it didn't feel like a GG story -- really it felt like the live action Resident Evil movies where the source material's characters are sprinkled in, acting more as a "here ya go they're here don't expect much!" type thing.

Honestly, a step down from Rev because at least everyone in that arc were somewhat present with maybe one or two exceptions? Hell, even though they were added as dlc or in Rev2, Dizzy, Haehyun, Baiken, and Answer were in the main story. Being hopeful here when I say that I hope we see more of Goldlewis or get to play as him because his design is badass and so is his coffin flail weapon. On the side of fairness though, I have a feeling this isn’t exactly what Ishiwatari intended (this is unlikely but it's probably Katano's directing? Whatever in any case)? The general reaction I saw from others who’ve watched the story was that the subplots were half baked and the plot as a whole was pretty rushed. Happy Chaos / the Original as the main villain was Calypso Twins from Borderlands 3 level cringe and every time HC appeared on screen I wanted to mute it. There is the bonus story coming later this year, along with the dlc slots, so ehh? The interactions between Colin and Frederick were one of my personal favorite points even if this did turn into “Neon Genesis White House Down”.

I’m sure like the others who actually paid attention to the story from the end of Xrd to Strive, my main question was this:

After the Justice / Jack-O fusion -- recall the “newly revived” Aria had purely red hair and Jack-O’s halo disappeared. During the mid-credits of Revelator, former friends turned sworn enemies turned frenemies Asuka and Frederick pretty much have one last declaration of war against each other, with Sin, I-No, and Raven as their witnesses -- Asuka even said “take good care of Aria”. Naturally from all of that, she’s not Jack-O anymore, right? Wrong. According to the game, what's inside of Jack-O is only a fragment / shard of Aria mixed in with Jack-O's projected personality (I think). How did they go from "let's do the fusion and guaranteed she'll return" to "yeah nah she ain't comin' back bro"

Xrd Revelator: "Pull this off successfully and Aria will fully revive as a human."

Strive: "Nah bruh. We lied. It just turned Jack-O human and what's inside her is only an unstable shard of Aria -- not the whole thing."

Back to the “final battle”, they don’t fight, rather Asuka removed the Flame of Corruption from Frederick's body (and somehow he got a haircut too). So really what was the fight in Rev2′s [After Story - A] for? Did he get nearly the life beaten out of him from Ky fighting dirty and left that crater in the park for nothing? Seems that way. Asuka lives on the moon and he's got a radio show now because (*bong rip*) that makes sense.

I’ll admit it’s a little cute that the feelings are mutual between Jack-O and Frederick -- he sees her as herself and not just a genetic copy but they expect us to think in the three weeks they've known each other that "oh shit I'm in love with this person" is believable -- and they live in the woods near a presumably 200+ year old space shuttle complete with the launchpad but come on now. That's some Russo Brothers level writing right there -- y'all remember Avengers: Endgame and how when he went across space and time to return the Infinity Stones, Steve Rogers threw everything away just so he could go back to his original era? The now depowered-so-he's-human-again Frederick Bulsara (the ex-gear and world's savior x times over formerly known as Sol Badguy) living in isolation away from his newfound family and friends gives off the same vibe. Especially after that one and only flashback where it's Aria's birthday and he was going to propose but the ring wasn't ready in time so he had that "error" to show instead.

KDL3 Stage 1-1: Tulip's stage!

I'm approaching these with a similar format to my KDL2 posts, except divided by stage rather than level since each stage is very unique in KDL3. This also means this is going to take me forever LOL. In terms of standalone ability drawings, each one will contain Kirby AND Gooey, since they have the same movesets. They're only placed next to each other for comparison though since like I said they can't BOTH wear the necklace at the same time. So far I think Gooey likes Spark the best!

This level has Rick and Nago, but I never used Rick since it was too risky-- too much of a chance of him accidentally stepping on the flowers!! Nago is preferential since he has 3 jumps. I would NEVER take Gooey here unless I was playing w 2 players though. His CPU is SO bad lmao (worse than any Helper in the original Super Star if you can imagine). That's how it is for the entire game quite frankly, but I REALLY like the idea of Kirby and Gooey going on the whole adventure together, so I'm pretending I did this whole thing with 2 people LOL.

I can tell you a little more about Nago since this post is very Nago centric! He's 19 years old and is honestly a completely normal guy... other than being able to turn into a giant cat anyways LOL. He can't use copy abilities for himself, but he's very crafty. He likes to help Kirby come up with new methods and angles to use his abilities. He has some difficulties befriending the other animal friends since he feels like he can't relate to them, so for now he's only friends with Kirby and Rick. He doesn't like when Kirby chooses to hang out with other friends over him. I guess that makes him n Rick more alike than I realized LOL. He is prone to expressing his emotions in catlike ways since he's a werecat.

I don't have much to say about this level's resident character, Tulip. She's a flower nymph, and she has 4... kids? counterparts? I don't know what they are to her. None of them transform, and the little flowers don't talk or anything, they just have eyes. Though, they can move underground by tunneling I think. Only between areas without grass though! They're very particular.

Ramblings abt Nago and calico cats in general under the cut since I have a special interest in cats and genetics:

So if you were unaware, calico cats (and tortoiseshell cats) are almost always female IRL! Thsi is because 'red' (orange) and black fur colors are both linked to the x chromosome, so a cat can only have 1 of those 2 per x chromosome. If the cat has only 1 x chromosome, it can only be red or black, never both. So this means that even though he's a male character, Nago must have 2 x chromosomes for his coat color to make sense. I think one could interpret him as transmasc, intersex, or they could say he has Klinefelter syndrome or some other chromosomal condition? So I chose to depict him as transmasc in my gijinka AU since I'm transmasc and he was my favorite animal friend when I was a kid!!

Did the designers working on KDL3 intend for him to be trans? Probably not, I think it was just an oversight. They wanted a funny cat character and calico is a very cute and popular color for cats! Though idk it is possible he was intentionally transgender since Kirby's probably like, the queerest popular nintendo mascot I can think of?? If he's gender neutral is it that farfetched for Nago to be trans or intersex? I don't know, I'm not his original designer.

Anyways another funny fact abt cats that Nago's designers might've known-- cats squint/close their eyes as a sign of trust in others! So Nago's eyes are usually shut because he's showing Kirby that he can trust him! (yes that means he's VERY upset when Kirby uses the needle ability or switches to a different animal friend cuz his eyes widen. TBF, if my friend was shooting chunks out of his face and turning them into needles, I'd be pretty distressed too LOL). I really like this detail cuz it means at least one person on the design team rlly rlly loved cats lol.
