Technology from 1870-1899 (For Encanto fic writers)

So, A mutual of mine @miracles-and-butterfliess pointed out that everyone (including me) tends to forget that Encanto was literally made when the triplets were born. Which is literally 1900 or 1901. Regardless, it was the very beginning of the 19th century so let me tell you about the technology/things they would/wouldn’t have. (And please keep in mind that most of these may or may not have been imported into Colombia yet.)

1870 - 1879

1872—A.M. Ward creates the first mail-order catalog. NO

1873—Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire. NO

1876—Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone. NO

1876—Nicolaus August Otto invents the first practical four-stroke internal combustion engine. NO

1876—Melville Bissell patents the carpet sweeper. NO?

1878—Thomas Edison invents the cylinder phonograph (known then as the tin foil phonograph). MAYBE

1878—Eadweard Muybridge invents moving pictures. NO?

1878—Sir Joseph Wilson Swan invents the prototype for a practical electric lightbulb. YES?

1879—Thomas Edison invented the first commercially viable incandescent electric light bulb. NO?

1880 - 1889

1880—The British Perforated Paper Company debuts toilet paper. YES

1880—English inventor John Milne creates the modern seismograph. NO

1881—David Houston patents camera film in roll format. NO?

1884—Lewis Edson Waterman invents the first practical fountain pen. YES

1884—L. A. Thompson built and opened the first roller coaster in the United States at a site on Coney Island, New York. NO

1884—James Ritty invents a functional mechanical cash register. YES?

1884—Charles Parson patents the steam turbine. NO

1885—Karl Benz invented the first practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. NO (even before Encanto, Alma’s town looked rural so I doubt the automobile reached them yet.)

1885—Gottlieb Daimler invented the first gas-engine motorcycle. NO

1886—John Pemberton introduces Coca-Cola. NO

1886—Gottlieb Daimler designs and builds the world's first four-wheeled automobile. NO

1887—Heinrich Hertz invents radar. NO

1887—Emile Berliner invented the gramophone. YES

1887—F.E. Muller and Adolph Fick invented the first wearable contact lenses. NO

1888—Nikola Tesla invents the alternating current motor and transformer. NO

1890 - 1899

1891—Jesse W. Reno invents the escalator. NO

1892—Rudolf Diesel invents the diesel-fueled internal combustion engine, which he patents six years later. NO

1892—Sir James Dewar invents the Dewar vacuum flask. NO

1893—W.L. Judson invents the zipper. NO (zippers didn’t become popular globally until a little bit later; buttons, ribbons/laces and whatever else were still the norm/in fashion for fastening and tying (which is still the case in some places today)

1895—Brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière invent a portable motion-picture camera that doubles as a film-processing unit and projector. The invention is called the Cinematographe and using it, the Lumières project the motion picture for an audience. NO?

1899—J.S. Thurman patents the motor-driven vacuum cleaner. NO (if you're running from being killed, the last thing you're going to bring is a vacuum cleaner)

I remember a post listing the sort of jobs there would be in Encanto but I forgot so I’ll just list the ones I know (let me know if I need to add anything.):

I know some of these are very obvious but I’m just giving people options okay?

@miracles-and-butterflies you seem to know a lot more about this kind of stuff so if you have anything to add/take away or me to fix please let me know. I tried to search up “When was X invention imported into Colombia” and literally nothing of use comes up.

ATBB's Future

Hiiii y'all, its uh. been a minute huh

Now that it's been a bit over a year since I put this blog on hiatus, a loootta stuff has happened and changed and i've been doing a loootttta thinking!

Looking back on it, like really really looking, my biggest reason for the hiatus was that at some point the blog just kinda became more of a chore than something I wanted to work on for fun. Ask blogs are a lot of work, even when you're just using talking portraits rather than drawing out every individual answer, and with how much ask culture on tumblr has died out over the years there just wasn't really enough payoff to make it feel worthwhile to keep burning myself out.

I think it's a really good thing I stopped it when I did, because having to deal with all that in my senior year of high school would have been a nightmare. I've actually just finished up my first semester of college now, and there's no way in hell I would've been able to keep up at any rate! With all of this in mind, I've gained a newer perspective about how to approach things going forward.

I'm still really attached to this story. With how much time I've spent thinking about it and developing it in my head, I can't let it go, even if the blog isn't really working out anymore. I keep thinking of different ways I could fix the decisions I made early on, as well as the super cool directions I could take it in in the future, and I just. I GOTTA.

So, I've decided to reboot it entirely as a fic series!

This means that, unfortunately, there won't be nearly as much artwork to accompany it, but it's far more likely for the story to actually progress! Writing is way less draining for me and once I get going I can do it much quicker than art anyway, even though I do still sorta wish I had the spoons to just turn it into a full-blown webcomic instead haha

This DOES mean that updates won't be nearly as linear as they were here, seeing as right now I've mostly been working on backstory fics that took place before the blog's main story, but that can at least give you guys more context for how the characters interact with each other! I'll also state that while I do write faster than I draw, I still do it a hell of a lot less, so updates will still probably be pretty infrequent. But at least they'll happen at all, right?

As for the state of this blog itself, obviously I'm going to leave it up! I still love looking back on the old interactions you guys had with my characters and your reactions to certain plot points (your reactions to Fluff tagging along with the rest of the group were my favorite by far) and I think it would actually kill me to erase them. I'll be posting the fic updates here too, just like I did for Self Hatred!

And even if it's not going to be an ask blog anymore, because of how much I still miss that kind of interaction with you guys, I think I want to do a sort of "last hurrah" event, to finally send off the asking format with some good vibes.

You see, there's a character I made up around this time of year two years ago. He's a pretty cool guy, but he doesn't actually show up until a specific turning point later in the story. I've been excited for you guys to talk to him since the day I made him, but a little bummed lately that you may not ever get the chance. I still need to get a lot of stuff prepared, so I'm not quite ready to announce or start anything just yet, but there's a reason I waited until my winter break to start thinking about this seriously.

I think you guys would really like to meet him.

But anyway, that's about all I wanted to say for now! This is a very long post already so it's time I start wrapping it up. As always, thank you all so much for sticking with me, even though I really haven't been consistent through the years. I hope this change doesn't come as too much of a disappointment, and that you'll keep sticking around for the reboot!

okay, so i've been doing some thinking. i've been scrolling through your blog and i stepped upon these "cheating on cove with Baxter and the other way around" scenarios. (i'm sorry, i wasn't able to read them, my heart couldn't take it ;-;) but!

what if mc was like, in a normal relationship with Baxter. you know, a couple, maybe married later and stuff, while of course still being besties with Cove. later mc and Baxter have a kid together, maybe still a small baby but! plot twist! Baxter gets into an accident or something and dies. (i'm sorry, he's my favourite man but i had to kill him for that scenario:'))

mc is completely devastated and also a little panicked, because what about the baby? and then Cove stepps in, deciding to help his best friend take care of the little one and basically becomes its father. i recently watched a video of a dog "helping" a cat take care of her kittens, and there you have it.

this one may be boring, so feel free to ignore, but i can't stop thinking about it.

if/when your relationship starts becoming something romantic, cove would absolutely put the brakes on everything and you'd go so slow...

I imagine he'd probably move in with you or you with him, and he'd stay somewhere else (if you're living in his house he will leave anyway, he's a gentleman like that fr) so that way you can figure out if it's not just bc he's doing all these things n you're mistaking admiration for love

you'd spend the first year going super slow, as if you've never known each other before

which technically you haven't, since you've never dated before. but cove would go so far as to find out your favorite color, song, animal, food.. all over again, even though he has it memorized and knows your likes better than his own.

once cove is sure you're ready for this (after much talk between the two of you and even with your therapist that yes you've made enough progress and are emotionally ready for this) does he finally put a label on it

now if you get married...

I imagine cove won't propose at all

like I think you'd have to talk n almost beg him...

in that case he would do a small but grande gesture to propose. or he'd propose to you before you've even left the bed for the day... no inbetween

but like 8 times outta 10, you're gonna have to propose to him

he'd cry and hug you n say yes of course.

and unless you want to keep this outta your wedding, I think cove would include baxter in your wedding.

first, ofc you'd have the picture to honor his memory

but I think he'd even go so far as to have smth in his vows. but to start, he'd say smth like:

"I know the reason we became closer was unfortunate, but I'm so happy to be able to call you and [Child] my family. and I hope I can be a good father and husband"

and "baxter will always have a place in our hearts. even though he and I didn't get along at first (watery chuckle)... I'm glad he got to love you, and I hope he trusts me to love and cherish you the same way as well.."

also if you don't want to give up your wedding ring from baxter, I think cove would even go so far as to suggest combining it with his.

!!! omg I was gonna say your and baxter's wedding bands would be black, but I have another idea

okay now, for YOUR bands, I imagine they're either black or silver and yk those infinity(?) bands? that has the 2 types of metal or whatever

that's what cove would suggest doing. and if you are worried abt people asking why your bands are different, he'd get the same twisted band but silver with say a black diamond or smth. just smth to make it look like it's intentionally different colors but same design or smth

(im overthinking a bit but it's an idea right?! I'm not crazy??<////3)

or if you don't wanna do that, I imagine you can just slip it on a necklace or leave it as is, whatever you want. he wouldn't mind even if you kept wearing it, cove would never ask you to get rid of baxter's image or memory in any way, not unless it was a real problem and your attachment to him/his things was unhealthy anyway.

now for baxter's band... well if you didn't bury it with him, I imagine you'd give it to your child

another thing I think you could do w your wedding band as well, and give them both your bands to do whatever they want with. or if they don't want it of course you're not forcing them to keep it

even though they didn't get to know baxter, the way you and cove still cherish baxter's memory does help them feel something of a connection.

I also imagine baxter would take lots of photo n video w the kid, even though they're young n just a babe, theres so many videos of baxter looking n acting so loving w them

and even a couple where he's teary-eyed n all "imma do you right by you. I love you so much.."

of course, if the kid doesn't feel that connected to baxter since they were too young to know or rmbr anything, and they don't feel anything much other than sympathy and the occasional sting when they see how much baxter loved them, you don't force it.

you both know that baxter was basically a stranger to them and even though they still respect baxter and he has a place in their heart, they don't feel like they're lacking anything.

"I don't really know what to say.. or how to feel... I see how much [P/N] misses you sometimes, and we have pictures of you, and they talk about you and stuff...

but I don't feel like im missing a dad. I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings, I wish I knew you too. sometimes I wish you were still here, so I got to know you as well, even though I'm still happy to have dad cove for my dad.

I just wanna know what you were like. I wanna experience what you were like. I... I wanna miss you like everyone else misses you too...

anyway, just know that dad is great! he takes care of me and [P/N] really well! he makes breakfast in bed, and he does/used to do this thing where he lifts me in the air before bed! he's so cool. I see how he makes [P/N] happy as well, so don't worry. although, [P/N] said you always thought cove was reliable and a good guy so maybe you aren't worrying anyway.

cove happily listens to anything they have to say on how they feel abt baxter btw. he accepts any of their feelings, be it that they don't feel anything at all, sympathy for others, or they feel sad abt losing him.

if they do say smth like how even though it's unfortunate and they feel bad for everyone who mourns baxter (for example/especially you), they see cove as their dad and don't feel like they're missing anything and they're happy to have cove for their dad.

ofc he cries n hugs them n tells them he loves em and he's happy n he comforts them if needed of course

I also think cove is very scared abt being a father

especially in this way... even if the kiddo doesn't remember anything, or it's hazy at best, he worries about replacing baxter.

he'd probably worry abt not living up to baxter

baxter was always much more mature, at least it seemed that way most times. cove just worries about if he has the backbone and the ability to parent the child well and be someone they can look up to and/or appreciate for being a good father

cries if they call him dad btw

if they do it before you start dating, I imagine it's one of the catalyst that cause you to talk abt your feelings for each other. or if it's in the early stage..

cove prbly freezes and runs away to the other room n freaks out, definitely cries. if you don't talk to him like right after he calls his dad n cries n shares his worries n fear

either way, when you do talk he's biting his nails n trying not to pace around the room and he's like "if you wanna distance yourselves so that they don't call me dad any more I totally understand, I mean idk it's prbly weird for you-"

n he just rambles. like none of it makes sense n u have to physically shut him up. kiss him, yell, throw a pillow, hit him w the child's stuffed animal, throw a single lego brick at his back and watch him fall to the floor like he just got a nuke thrown at him

if it's later on n theres nothing to worry abt bc youve talked abt this or saw it coming or its just the otherwise most natural step, he cries of course

but he doesn't fall apart from being his in the back w a single fucking Lego as if it hurt 🙄🙄🙄🙄 (I hate this man he's DRAMATIC)

I imagine you do it soon, like maybe before the wedding just so that way you can have a private moment (just to save him some embarrassment from ugly crying in front of your families. in fact he just might faint fr)

n you + the kiddo surprise him w adoption papers (depending on how old the babe is at this point, they have like no idea what's going on but they know that cove is now officially recognized by the whole world (even by the unicorns n wizards n warlocks) as their daddy))

imagine laying in bed w cove n the kid in between you two

and when you wake up, cove is alrdy awake and was watching you two. he was petting the kids wild hair and he had pulled the two of you in and kept you under his arm..

and the sunlight is coming in, the day is just perfect. n the look on cove's face is full of so much love but also a bit somber this time

(cove feels awkward being here like this sometimes. during times like this you have to remind him it's okay, and you pull him back in. of course he does the same for you on those days.)

"I love you two. so much..." he whispers, tears sticking to his lashes

the kid flips over, curling into cove and they stop their sleepy mumbling now that they're tucked into cove's chest, feeling warm, happy, and safe.

you whisper equally as tender. "we were meant to be like this too."

also!! smth I just thought of...

imagine the kid looks mostly/very much like baxter. they act very much like cove's kid

like you would think cove n baxter had a kid together LOL

(if the resemblance is too much, they ask if you're the step parent </3 pls Ik it may not make sm sense but I just think it'd be so fuckin funny)

I have kind of a niche Garashir fic idea I want to write but I’ve never posted anything publicly before, so I am nervous. But I can’t seem to get over the idea? You’re one of my favorite fic writers, any advice? 💕🥺

Ooooh, you gotta try to write it!!! I always love to indulge my new ideas that are driving me insane as soon as I can hehe (because part of writing often has to be done after the initial idea no longer excites you quite the same way).

I like that you said it’s a niche idea, too! I do enjoy most of the common fanon tropes and worldbuilding, but it’s always so refreshing when people add something brand new to the Garashir body of literature. And the nicher and stranger the better, in my opinion!! One thing about writing something niche is that maybe it won’t get the same amount of attention as quickly as something that has broader appeal, HOWEVER... I can tell you from experience that when your niche stuff does find its audience (which may take patience and persistence) that audience will likely go absolutely WILD for it. And I always find that very rewarding <3

Is the reason you haven't started yet because you don't quite know how to start? If that's the case, I would recommend writing an outline first. I even sometimes will outline really short oneshots lol, not because I think I really need to, but because that way i at least have a good record of my idea and ALSO because sometimes I can trick myself into just starting to write by taking notes on in outline format until I get to the part I'm REALLY excited about, at which point I realize I'm just writing full sentences instead of notes and I just let it flow from there and go back to fix the beginning later. XD You could also just try to summarize the plot for a friend, that often reveals to me where any structural issues are tripping me up, and identifies what I need to think about more before I set words down on the page.

Idk if you haven't written before or if you just haven't posted any of it, but I want you to know that a few years ago, when I was easing myself back into writing, I worked on writing like 3 or 4 different garashir fic ideas privately before I actually figured out which idea I wanted to write all the way to the end and actually post. Most of those first wips never got posted (and my wip graveyard is still massive and always growing lol) and that's for the best bc I either got bored of the idea or could not yet achieve the story in the way I wanted to. Which is NOT to tell you that this is inevitable or that you should let your inner editor shut you down, but I just want you to know that it's perfectly okay and normal to, like, have to noodle around a bit before you've written something you're happy with.

Speaking of your inner editor, you gotta tune them out while writing a first draft. Don't even worry if the sentence makes sense, just get the words out, and then get the next words out, and then the next... If there is something stopping you from writing the next sentence (a name you need to make up, or something you need to research, or uncertainty about what a character would be doing, or even if you are just blanking on a word) and you are trying to maintain a flow of writing, then write a note for yourself (e.g, "[insert title of a Cardassian novel here]" or "[Julian makes some kind of expression. Surprise? Anger? idk]" or "[synonym for sinister, bc I've used sinister three times this fic already]") and then MOVE ON. You can go back in and fill in those blanks later.

Also, I really really really really like the writing advice of thinking of your first draft as your worst draft or stupidest draft. It's so true and it helps take the pressure off. One related amazing thing about writing star trek fanfic is that if ever you begin to doubt yourself, you can just fondly think about a beloved episode of Star Trek where something very silly or buckwild happens in a very contrived way, and then remind yourself that people LOVE that episode anyway. This is a genuine way that I have reminded myself not to be so harsh on my own writing lmao.

I really working with beta readers, but I know that's not something everyone enjoys and it's def not required. Still, a beta reader can give feedback on your writing to make it clearer, and they'll likely become invested in your fic and will cheer you on, and if it’s longer than a oneshot you can have someone to talk it through with during the writing process. But it might be hard to find someone you work well with and everyone’s beta reading style is a lil different, so I recommend always being very clear about what kind of feedback you want from them (grammar/typos, plot structure, clarity, brainstorming ideas for how to fix this plothole, does this one specific line of dialogue work, etc! whatever aspects you are uncertain about and want help with for that specific fic). And you should know that it’s okay to not take someone's recommendations too, it’s ultimately your fic, so anyone giving you feedback should just be trying to help you achieve your own vision. Still, even in those cases where you don't go along exactly with their idea for what to change, knowing what parts confused them can help you figure out how to get your vision across more clearly.

If you think concrit might actually be demotivational and intimidating (totally get that, back in high school I actually solicited concrit on my fics publicly, as was the custom back then, and received some critiques from some truly well-meaning friends, and the experience STILL rattled me so bad that it turned me off writing for awhile), or if the process of finding someone to beta read sounds overwhelming, I’d recommend that you instead just find a trusted friend who is willing to read over the completed draft, with the understanding that they must simply give you a sanity check and then tell you yep that’s good! Cannot stress enough the power of encouragement and support and having someone hype you up. ^_^

EarthSpark Season 1 Finale Retrospective (from someone who hasn't seen every single TF show)

(I'm not too sure how to format text posts but whatever)

Spoilers for Transformers Earthspark (obviously lol)

I finally had enough time to finish season 1 of Earthspark, and though I loved the finale, there were just a few things I think it could've improved on.

1. The ending was too easily solved, we had that HUGE buildup of the machine that could kill anything with energon in its body, then it's just reversed 2 minutes later? The finale would have generated so much hype and appreciation for the second season if it ended on a cliffhanger.

2. A few of the plot devices didn't make very much sense if you REALLY think about it. For example, once the Autobots arrive at the Malto's home to save them from ghost, why didn't they take off their ghost badges? They clearly do not associate with ghost anymore, why were they still wearing the badges? And even after that, when the Terrans and Bee defeat a mind controlled Elita and OP, why didn't they remove their badges? They saw that the badges are what caused them to power down at first, and it's safe to assume that once Elita and OP awoke from the Terrans defeating them, they'd still be under mind control. (Unless this was specified in the show and I just missed that)

3. This is minor, but where did the cassettes go? Surely Soundwave would've freed them, right? Also where is Tarantulas?

4. When Twitch and Thrash were on the tower fighting Mandroid, they knew that the cybersleeves were powering the energon machine thingy, why didn't Thrash just free the Maltos while Twitch distracted Mandroid? (Unless that's what he was trying to do originally, I may have missed/forgotten that)

Though I do have complaints, the finale had so much good in it

1. I love how Twitch and Nightshade were the main two Terrans, their personalities work so well together.

2. The camerawork and animation is amazing, the blend of 3d and 2d works so well in the finale and it looks phenomenal.

3. The reference to the hanger fight from previous episodes when Twitch propelled herself with her cannon was perfect, I love that she picked that up from Megs.

4. Overall it was an amazing finale, and though I still do prefer Cyberverse and TFP to Earthspark, the second season could steal my heart.

Speaking of season, here's a few things I'd love to see in the 2nd season of Earthspark (Obviously not every single one, that'd be a bit too cluttered for a single season)

1. More characters who (in canon) who changed sides (during the war) such as Jetfire and Drift, I'd love to see the dynamics of a reformed character showing their perspective on the past.

2. Add the DJD, they would be perfect for Earthspark, since in IDW, they hunt down Megs for changing sides, they'd be perfect since Earthspark Megs changed sides. I just want to see Earthspark Megatron be held responsible for his actions during the war, and would love to see Megs explain more of his previous ideals and tactics.

3. Give us more time to address the stuff that happened in the war, since we've seen people talk about it, but we need to SEE it, with characters like Starscream addressing the insane shit that happened within the cons ranks. (Similar to my previous thought, lol)

4. More classic characters being MAIN main characters, like give us more Arcee or Wheeljack. (This could be fixed with spotlight episodes)

5. More character spotlight episodes, we need to explore individual characters, especially the now freed Decepticons. I'd love a Shockwave, Soundwave, or even Skywarp spotlight episode. (Also where did the cassettes go? They should've been freed during the finale)

6. Possibly introduce Quintessons since this show loves Quintus Prime so much, and if they don't do that, introduce some of the other Primes.

7. Because of how progressive the series is with its representation, introduce Knock-Out, finally canonize Breakdown and Knock-Out's relationship in a show (I know it's canon in IDW), instead of just implying it like in TFP.

8. Have the second season focus on developing characters and introducing new ones, have the second season be a set-up for the third, and build up the antagonist through pre-existing characters. For example, using my Tarn/DJD suggestion, have an episode where Megatron reveals the DJD has found his location, and have him explain what the DJD is, and why this is an issue. Or with my Quintesson suggestion, have Quintus Prime give the children a vision of the Quintessons and warn them about their approach, then have the children ask what the Quintessons are.

9. This show could introduce Unicron, but honestly, a plot following the effects of the war would be better, though a Unicron plot is always welcomed.

10. Expand the Terrans more, they all share the same enthusiasm, and just feel a little too similar. I'd love to see Twitch become more pessimistic after all the insane stuff that happened in the finale, show her being affected after nearly being killed, watching her family "die", and having to mature so quickly, show Twitch being weary around Megs after nearly being killed by him under mind control.

Tips for those who are planing to Edit your Clangen Cat Files (From someone who has suffered)

1. Check if you can actually edit your Clangen Cat Files

I have been playing Clangen for a very long time so I have downloaded many older versions. The Clangen I was editing had a simple saves folder and it seems that the newer version on itch don't have that so, I have no idea how to help you. I'm not a developer and I fell ass backwards onto these tips because I was having so much trouble. Also, I only own a Windows so if stuff is not working and your on another devise, I really don't know how to help you there. I have tried, boy have I tried but I can't figure it out, so Sorry.

Now to the many Lessons from my suffering.

Make a back up, And Please, make more than just one

When you mess something up, and you will mess something up, make a backup of the file you are going to edit. If you don't do this than you might delete something that you don't know how to fix. And then you will have to start with a whole to save file. And do not make just one backup, make at least Three, Two that you will actually use and One to make infinite copes from, you will mess up a lot and you will need those extra copies.

2. Download a program that can actually edit the code with out making it unusable

Opening up the code in any program and placing it back in will not work. The new file will probably be unreadable to the game and you will have to start all over again. The software I used is called (notepad++) If the download page looks weird to you it is probably because this program may be older than google. But don't you worry, this oldy was made to ready all kinds of code and can let you see inside of the files while not braking the game.

Once you have this fully downloaded, when you right click on your Clan's Cat list file, Right under open, there should be (Open with notepad++) After you edit the files you should still be able to enter your save.

3. Write out the Edits you plain to make to your cats

If you have the Clangen Cat Maker, you probably know what you want to make your new cat look like. But the code will look very different from the Clangen Cat Maker. There are some words that are different in the Code and formatted differently. So I suggest that you set up a word or text doc to write out the Cat you are going to Try and code in. This is my format for writing for you to use:

Name: (For Tip 6)

Age: Age

Pelt Length: Length

Reversed: True or False

Shading: True or False

Base Color: COLOR

Base Pattern: Pattern

White Patches: Pattern

Eye Color: COLOR

Heterochromia: True or False

Other Eye Color: Null, unless you want Heterochromia if so; OTHER COLOR

Scar 1: Null or Scar Name

5. Know the Difference between GREY and Gray.

If you did not know, in the vision of Clangen I was using gray eyes were not chosen for a cat by just editing their eye color to GRAY, but rather to GREY.

Is GREY the correct spelling for the color; no. Did this annoy me for hours after finding this out; yes. Could this be a funny inside joke between the coders; probably. How long did it take me to find out that this is why that one cat was not working; Five Very Stressed Filled Hours. Other things in the cat code like tints are just called gray so, know the difference.

6. If you are going to change the cat's name, DO THAT FIRST

If you made a save and you want to make all the cats in the save different names but you want to do that later, DO IT FIRST. When you are in the depths of the code,it is hard to tell which cat is which. It can be so easy for you to change the wrong cat and then you have to redo everything again. This can also happen multiple times when you don't learn the first time you do this.

If you have a name in mind for your new cat, Write it in the Name section of Tip 3.

As much as I want to say these tips will make things easier, they just worked really well for me. There is still going to be a lot of trial and error in the actually editing process. But I hope that this helps someone. Now if you don't mind me, I am going back into my hole. I Wish You All Good Luck. You will need it.

Height tracking lore stuff

Axel - 9'6"~ - due to his unstable genetics from having human genes forcefully spliced into his mew genes a lot of his genetic formation information got screwed resulting in his current mewtwo appearance for one taller humanoid-ish and such unfortunately in the mess of his genes trying to stabilise from the new information and damages the gene for growth in all areas height bone growth muscle growth ect got left on, and by the time Axel even remembered/figured out how to manipulate his own genetic coding to turn those genes off and stabilise himself he was already massively tall and he absolutely hates it. He wishes he was 6 foot odd, the tall hurts both in memory of his past self and also oh god being this tall is suffering, especially when you've got metal armor screwed into your bones causing probably bone fractures and splintering as you grow and the metal fixings don't. Having a horrible time, he's gonna maim me just stupid big mewtwo who wishes he wasn't stupid big

Prototype - 8'8" - it's just a nice number to me fam lmao and also with the slight damages to his dna from being a clone of axel he loses some height and his genes were probably fixed during development to cap his height before he entered the suffering giant height range

Scribe - 7' - due to the Smeargle genes his height got cut otherwise he would've been a similar height to his brother, he is very embarrassed and angry that he's shorter than some of the later generation mewtwo

Dusty - 8' - as an adult he's only a few inches of his papa! Prototype would be so proud of him, not many clever thoughts here just liked him being the same height as Imp

May - 5'4" - #sorry, no height for u it's too iconic your short ass is too iconic May and canonically you are literally stunted because of the tainted with synergy mega stone implanted in development you're physically and power wise stunted I'm afraid assigned runt of genetic litter

Darkness - 7'6" - height restored, this girl has been hassling me for AGES for extra height when she realised 6'9" is probably not actually that big for a mewtwo, like way back since March I think? She realised she was not the big mean bitch she thought she was and she wasn't having it XD so she finally successfully bullied me into giving her extra height and she's quite happy knowing even with Mays souped up Mega evo that adds 2 foot she's still taller than her sister normally

Matt: 6'2" - he came into my office and also bullied me into giving him height, pointing out rightfully that Mays stunted height isn't genetic but was purely environmental soooo he still has the potential to be tol and also lore wise he wasn't immediately terminated for his missing limbs as he was going to be spare parts but if he was only 5'9" his organs would probably be smaller than a normal twos and this kinda shitty spares so he gets height and it also provided him with gender euphoria but in exchange he is losing a kidney reduced to one slightly bigger than average one and losing some eyesight benefits because nope you need more issues from genetic degregation and hes losing his implanted mega stone he's getting a mega stone accessory later in exchange. He tries to get pushed to 6'4" but after being told I'd make him only 6' he shut up

Imp: 8' - big girl!!!! When she first comes out she's fully developed mentally and her body is fully developed organs reproductive system ect but she was intentionally kept in a more cramped tube and kept on strict nutrition which means when she first emerged she was only about 6'3 still rather big but kept smaller easy to handle than say Prototype or Scribe, after she escaping and getting to eat as much as she wanted and not being hungry and having actual space to exist her more prominent fossil mew genes went 'hello!!' and her growing hormones reactivated to let her become her full potential in height and body so she's probably a bit stockier as well that her first image having gained them muscles too

AI: 7'5" - unlike her parents AI is intentionally given access to foods to grow big and strong as an adult (as a teen she's likely about 6'7") with the intent of having her body incubate larger stronger mewtwo offspring that could be transferred to growing tanks or raised, the theory being bigger body bigger womb and growing space and while technically true with Imp having the size and capability to potentially produce a large egg (due to having more other pokemon genes) and MIA likely able to produce a large baby if she desired one AI will obviously be removed from there before they can use her

MIA: 7'9" - being out on the battle fields a lot MIA had room to keep growing and would scavenge food whenever she could devouring down berries and even other pokemon meaning she grew much like her mother had despite the facility trying to restrict her. Also MIA may have been made using Axels dna as well as Imps explaining the coloration change from creams to more purples and the persistence of tall genetics despite them being restricted, this also potentially explains the then jump from purples and pinks to Blue with AI as Axel is a holder of blue gene tho this is usually as a stripe something in Imp/MIAs genes likely had blue stripe gene turned on all the way making it blue fill, this makes MIA Axels daughter as well as Imps.

Important note: Imp and Axel share no genetic relation from their mew donors or human gene donors, though later they may refer to each other as Cousins which will then become siblings as Imp longs for familial connection with anyone like her and Axel can see she needs that and isn't gonna be a "well actually," jerk to her about it. He sees no harm in saying they're family even if by all means they're not. When they find out about MIAs existence and shared genetic relation to them both neither of them see it as weird cause they know there's no relation, despite the hatred of his kin Axel is probably a bit more open to acting as father with MIA (until he realises she doesn't want that in which cause he quickly steps off). So don't be weird about it alright

Show us your butt(ernut)

Veggies are important. They give you fibre, vitamins and a false sense of achievement, all of which you need to face daily life. If, like me, you grew up in a culture which adds sugar to veggies (yes really) you might not like it.

Easy to fix, Muchacho. Especially with butternut squash.

But also, maybe you do like that, and that’s also cool. No judgment here. What are we listening to today while cooking? Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac

Ingredients

Two cleaned halves of a butternut (or a pound of cubes) - if you choose death and go for a whole, unpeeled butternut, may the force be with you. That thing is HARD to process.

Olive oil, or the oil of your choice, we’re easy here.

Home-made spice rub: Mix together a dash of the following to taste - smoked paprika, dried parsley, onion powder, garlic powder, a pinch of celery salt, black pepper. If you’re feeling adventurous, add a pinch of cumin. The smokiness of the paprika works well with the naturally sweeter squash to amp up the savoury flavour.

That leftover rosemary sprig from the chicken - I know you still have it. Don’t look at me like that.

Method

Oven should be 180 degrees Celsius / 355 degrees Fahrenheit.

Empty the bag of butternut cubes (or place the halved one, cut side up) in a roasting dish.

Note: If you’re using a stainless steel one, do yourself a favour and use baking paper / tinfoil otherwise you’ll Darth Vader your fingers trying to get that burnt stuff off later.

Think that you’re going to be healthier than the recipe says and try olive oil cooking spray. Well la-di-da, aren’t you a domestic genius. Attempt to spray butternut. Inhale about 3ml of aerosol olive oil in the process and succumb to a coughing fit that makes the cat panic.

Wheeze at him that you’re okay but when you try to pet him he runs away, now reassured that you are, in fact, still alive.

Use olive oil like the recipe says in the first place.

Toss your spice mixture on top and reach in to mix it around to ensure an even coating of oil and spice. Attempt to wash hands but get tap oily, like the hapless ‘before’ participants in the infomercial videos before they introduce the product they’re plugging.

Toss the leftover rosemary sprigs in with the butternut and slide into the oven’s middle rack. There’s a joke in there somewhere about sliding into someone’s rack but we’re too virtuous with our vegetables to stoop that low.

The cooking time varies wildly on your choice of butternut format and its thickness. Give it roughly 30 mins before you start opening the door every 10-15 mins and poking the butternut with a fork to see if it’s soft all the way through. You could also stare dejectedly at the now nearly cremated rosemary through the oven glass, but this is optional.

Pull it out when it’s nicely browned, and fully fork-tender. It goes brilliantly on a bed of greens, some creamy feta cheese, red onion and roast pepitas if you’re looking for something light. If it’s chilly, serve as is with a protein of your choice. Or get totally engrossed in channeling your inner Christine McVie and eat later, both options work.

Nami’s 2023 Fandom Goals

Oooookay I am putting this out into the Tumblr void for some semblance of accountability because I usually tell my family my goals but unfortunately they do not know about the whole “writing gay smut” thing. (With the exception of my spouse, who knows all my secrets and then some, and gets both my regular goals and my fandom goals!)

Writing goals

1. Finish my first completed book-length fic! An easy goal to start with because I’m 1 chapter away from a finished draft of Trace a Line for @amywaterwings :) It’s looking to be about 50-55k when it’s done.

2. Get the bulk of my wips posted, even if they’re unfinished! I spent an hour tallying it all up and I have OVER 250k of UNPUBLISHED words. Unpublished!!! I want to edit, polish, and post as much of it as I can, and let readers choose whether they want to read something with an undetermined completion date or not. (I plan to complete all of them eventually, but with so many wips I have to pick and choose which to prioritize.) Anyway there’s lots of stuff in there, for like 5 different fandoms. Should be fun:)

3. Finish my 2021 COBB!! (Love Laid Bare). Well, finishing is a potentially-too-ambitious goal for one year because the outline is shaping up to be a 90k fic, but I’d like to at least make some significant progress toward completing it. I’ve been postponing because the early parts need some major reworking. But compared to two years ago, I feel I have enough energy, time, and skill now to tackle it and fix the problem spots.

Reading goals

1. Leave more comments! I’m going to try to comment on every fic I read. Might miss a few but I’m going to try!! A related goal is to be less self-conscious about comments, too. Some of them are going to be rambly and maybe I will scare some authors. Some of them might just be strings of emoji or keysmash. But the point is that I’m going to leave more comments!

2. Download my all time favorite fics, format them w/ pretty covers, and save them to my Kindle. I’ve already done this with a lot of them but I’m still missing a bunch, so I want to finish this.

3. Make a dent in my marked for later?? Is this another too-ambitious goal?? Maybe. There’s hundreds of fics in there. HUNDREDS UPON HUNDREDS. Jesus christ I don’t even want to look at the number of pages it is. But I KNOW there’s some real gems in there so I’m going to finally read them! Or at least I am going to try!

Other goals

1. Do some digital drawing tutorials! I did art all the way through school, up through college (mostly watercolor landscapes and mixed media/abstract stuff) so I’m not completely inexperienced, but digital drawing has always felt awkward to me, and drawing people specifically is NOT something I am good at. (anatomy??? don’t know her.) So I’d like to get better at drawing people, and drawing them on my ipad. Simply for purposes of being able to put my blorbos and silly little guys in situations.

2. Participate more in fandom communities. I’ve been kinda MIA the last two years because I was really not in a good mental place for a really long time. 2022 was one of the most difficult years I’ve ever had. But things are looking up and I’m doing MILES better than this time last year so I have more social energy to spend, and I’d like to spend it on my fandom friends! so you may see me pop out of hiding in discord more often :)

Please avoid metagaming altogether. My characters will not react nicely to someone knowing information they never told them.

Warnings

As I said before, the darker themes you may find usually include violent content. Naturally, it's not the only kind of writing I do, nor the most usual, but it's something to have in mind. This applies mostly to Scarlett's story, but it can be in dark RP as well.

You may find: different displays of sadism, including torture, physical and verbal abuse, psychological and emotional manipulation, etc.

There are also topics regarding slavery, contemplation of death, and dark mindsets in general.

My main muse is a Ghoul, so things involving gore, cannibalism and insanity may be present too.

Rhiannon is a very deranged character, so don't be surprised if she finds joy in those disturbing situations.

In a less violent way (maybe), it can apply to NSFW too.

For interactions involving any of these topics, I require chatting OOC to make sure we're both okay with what we're writing in order to avoid any issues. I'll use the read more tool if needed and the community labels for NSFW threads.

My personal limits include incest, pedophilia, pregnancy, non-consensual sexual activities and animal abuse. Meaning that I will not write any of my characters explicitly performing or going through any of those situations.

Regarding the previous point, I personally don't have any hard triggers, only things that I'm better off not engaging with.

Important! If we are interacting and something on my end upsets or triggers you, by all means let me know! Please don't keep it to yourself, I could be overlooking it by accident. Talk to me and we'll solve it!

Communication is key! I'm aware that people have their specific triggers, and I'd appreciate it if they let me know when that's the case, as I will do the same. I don't want to harm anyone with the things I write.

Lastly, I strongly believe that fiction is and stays fictional. Writing certain content does not equal encouraging it in reality, and I will not use this to actively harm anyone or promote any ideas in any way. Again, if you don't like it, block tags or unfollow me and move on.

with all of the weird punk takes i've been seeing lately i think some people need to do some diving into the world of punk to familiarize themselves with what it's actually about, because the aesthetics of loudness and roughness, sloppy diy and this idea of rebellion may be 'punk', but superficial aesthetic details about a music scene that has constantly been in battle with its own commercialization and spectacle from the very beginning.

the stereotypical rough loud noisy rebellious youth culture image that most people so strongly adhere to in their minds was literally created by record labels with the formation of bands like sex pistols, the clash, and the ramones. All poser shit from the very beginning, while other emerging music scenes, all punk in spirit but not always by name, would carry the essence of what's actually punk while not sticking into the lame aesthetic cul de sac people still can't completely grow out of.

post-punk, positive punk (which would later be called deathrock and trad goth), anarchopunk, hardcore, industrial, many early experimental synth projects, no wave, were all taking what core important aspects of the punk world they resonated with and expanding its potential and building community around it, though some of those don't claim to be punk at all, and are paradoxically more punk than punk. this is also why emo and post-hardcore exists. Why post-rock exists, why what we know as indie rock even exists, it wouldn't happen without the punk spirit of bands like Husker Du. All of these have a deep diversity in their sound, and to some jackoff who has only ever listened to stuff pining after that late 70s early 80s age of stuff sounding like black flag and circle jerks, would probably claim that they aren't punk because they're living under a false impression of what's important about it. it's at the point where people are acting like having a thought out and slow or subdued tone disqualifies it from being punk. listen to fugazi, listen to unwound. listen to zounds. listen to suicide. if i had my way i'd forcibly sit you down and make you listen to Coil, which isn't punk, but would probably fix you.

I like loud, rough, unmastered, chaotic music, but to boil this down to being what punk is about is to reduce it to empty aestheticism. Please look into the history of self published record labels, particularly Dischord records is one I feel like has been clear about their history in their own words, and their influence is obvious. Or even just reading into the nature of why emo and post-hardcore became genres in the first place, speaks deeply to the need to break away from a performative stagnation where creative boundaries once grounds for liberation becomes a hindrance.

this is also just not even mentioning how utterly commercialized much of the things people cite as troo punx is. that's a whole new conversation. this is why people say punk is dead, cause to a lot of people punk is just a novelty encapsulated in their safe bubble.

Dealing with Sickness Headcanons

Ok - with @asirensrage’s post prompting, I was thinking about how my favorites would handle sickness. I know my favorites are not really many other’s favorites, but it’s what lives in my brain and they're who I know the best. So that said here's how I think the main cast of Diving would handle somebody they love being sick, done in a quiz answer format, cause why not.

(Sorry it's a bit late - weekends are not the best for finding writing time.)

Hayden - She'll be attentive, and if you ask for anything, you got it. But you'll have to instruct. She’s bad at making sure she’s taking care of herself sometimes, so aside from blatantly obvious sick care items, stuff may go unnoticed until there’s a cue to suggest otherwise. That said, cues can be read very well, and you won’t have to worry about needing too much after enough observation time. If all things you would need are taken care of, she'd just be at your side, trying her best to make you smile. Expect extra cuddling, and snuggly warm things. Music is a must. Games are most likely coming out.

Glen - You would not need to get up for anything. He'll have already observed your favorite type of everything prior, and once basics are taken care of, you'll get as many stories to fill the space as you could ask for. Paintings if you're up for it. Reading books outloud if you would prefer not doing much. He'll try to lighten the mood with jokes and humor, but you can tell there's care behind it all. Comfort food, comfort items. He’ll make sure it’s all there. The house may be a mess to clean after though, his priority is going to be getting you better and being there for you, not cleaning up. He'll help with that later.

Nick - This is your best attendant of the lot by leagues. He is caring. Compassionate. Will be there with soothing gestures and comfort items. You do not need to do anything. Peaceful caresses and nurturing to the extreme. He's got you. While you're sleeping, he will do everything you'd need done, and you'll have a fresh start once you get up. Clean house, no to-do lists, just pick up where you left off and take it easy. 11/10 this is probably who you’d want to take care of you.

Steph - You will be lavished with all the typical care items, but in a very awkward manner. 'Oh soup! Soup is good. Hold on. But broth soup right? Is there chicken? Do you like chicken? Or just plain broth? Or maybe you don't like soup! Shit. Would you want soup?' … Give her a direction, and you'll be good. Even still, you'll probably end up reassuring her just as much as she does for you. Her heart is in the right place, though, and she will be set on trying to improve your mood. If you play videos games, she'll have a distraction setup ready to go.

Harold - Harold is observant, and devoted when it's somebody he cares for. Just hard to get into that inner circle. But he would make getting you everything you need his priority. Anything. Anything you ask for, you got it. And if people are bothering you, or could potentially bother you, he is chasing them away. You need to rest and to get better; they can deal with whatever they need themselves. He would also read to you bedside, something he wrote most like, until you drifted off. Before you’re asleep, he’s already planning out what all needs done before you wake up, and much like Nick, you would not have to worry about taking care of anything. It is still Harold though, so watch for prickly spots; regardless of sick levels, you hit a nerve and he will react.

Max - On the outside, she is going to be calm and aloof. 'Oh, yeah, water. Check. Can do. Yeah, we got some extra blankets. Hold up, I'll be right back.' But on the inside, she is freaking out. 'What if you get worse? What if this is the start of something they can't fix? Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.' She will be notably absent at times lost in her worry unless you specifically tell her to stay there. Once you're asleep though, she is taking care of everything, staying busy, incapable of staying still. Fuses are short, and while she would not be snippy with you, anybody else had best hope they don’t need shit from her right now.

Lloyd - You will get anything you ask for, but much like Steph, it's going to be kinda weird and you're going to end up reassuring him. 'Oh fuck, you would probably like extra pillows, and how about a movie? Wait, that movie? Fuck yeah, I love that shit! When they're all like *animated reenactments*— Oh, shit I'm yelling. That ain't helping is it, fuck, okay.... Sorry. Oh, I think there’s some— wait, do you want water or something too? You should be drinking. Well, that makes it sound like drinking drink. Not that type of… Drink. Water. On it.' For as much as his help is scattered or delayed, he would be able to read you really well, though. And he would be an excellent cuddler and fun company. Stay in bed next to you? Fuck yeah! Lazy day.

Flagg - Presumptuous of you to think you're a loved one. But for what it's worth, he'd make sure you get what you need to survive. Somewhat comfortably. Depending on how devoted you are to him, he might actually bring items to you himself instead of just having somebody else do this or leaving them where you could find them. Hell, he might even sit with you and tell anecdotes that he retained in his vague memories. Possibly in a nice manner. Maybe. Or maybe he'll be a fuckhead about it all. Toss a coin. Hey, do you like iced milk? It's fresh. Also, he may handle your to-do list while you're out, but don't ask how; you may not want to know details.

Gwen - She's not the best caretaker as she doesn't know what to typically do, or what tastes the best. Much like Harold, she will be playing gatekeeper, and keeping you in a safe quiet place to recoup. Things can wait, or they can be handled by her directly. Handling things is what she does best. Unlike Harold, she would allow others in if they would help, most likely better than her. But she's going to stand back watching to make sure it's helpful to you, and taking notes if it is. You need food, she'll put in an order. Tea? Do you do things to tea, or is it just a packet and water? Oh I guess you do feel cold, that's not normal is it? Let's fix that. She cares, it's just not her specialty. She's trying.

Teddy - Combination of Nick and Steph and Lloyd. You got a high level of care and attentiveness like Nick. He's going to be task focused as long as it's tasks he's familiar with or aware of. Gotta be clear about this though, he is not the most perseptive of the bunch. Like Steph, there's an awkward nerd wrapped up inside all of this. He'll second guess and fumble sometimes, but in an adorably endearing way. Along with Lloyd, his brain also goes faster than his body sometimes, and he'll lose himself in thoughts only to realize you might not have made that mental journey with him. He will also be insanely stoked about lazy day, feel better movie time. He is here for that.

Preparations

Since it is possible this may end up as my only significant social media account, I thought I'd put up a bit of an update.

I have never really used Tumblr in a conventional interactive way (though I do appreciate the likes and reblogs), but more as a place to put my writing. Mostly that has been serialized superhero speculative fiction--the Doc Future universe--set originally in an alternate near future, now an alternate past. Fall and Call take place in 2013/2014 and Princess in 2012. I also post background bits, commentary, and a few short stories and novelettes (and Princess, currently a novella trying to become a novel.)

In addition to the table of contents pages for Fall and Call, I normally include a 'Next' link at the bottom of every chapter page and a 'Previous' link at the top to make navigation easier, and I have yet to add TOCs for Maker's Ark and Princess because neither is finished.

My Stories page is still up but needs to be updated. I have not tested how much Tumblr's editor has changed since I stopped posting regularly, and I was already using a workaround for tab-delineated paragraphs, so editing older stuff can be an issue 8-)

Many readers believe Fall is a stronger story when starting with the first chapter rather than the prologue, I have come to agree, and the revised version will be restructured to reflect that, so starting with 'Phone Tag' is recommended for new readers. The issues with Fall caused by learning structure and pacing as I went along and not originally intending to turn it into a novel will remain until I do put out a revised version, either online or as an ebook, but I hope readers can still find the current version enjoyable.

Since there is no table of contents it is no longer easy to find the most recent chapters of Maker's Ark (currently here) or either the start or latest chapter of Princess (here and here), for which I apologize. I have always been better at creative work than maintenance of something that grew to be quite a bit bigger than I expected 8-)

Some bits of continuity are going to change, so if there is a conflict, go with what is written later if this matters to you. I have been working on revising some of the earlier chapters of Princess which were causing problems later, and those will probably be the first writing I post when I resume.

In the meantime, enjoy what is to your taste, and you can always check back in timeline here for what you missed. Also a note on format: I starting writing Fall with the intent that the online version be easily read on a full size computer or laptop screen. I understand that many now prefer to read on a phone, tablet, or e-reader, but this is the format I create for. I don't personally use a phone for reading because of eyesight issues, but I hope my writing is still enjoyable for those who do.

I don't yet have a schedule for when I will resume posting, and I don't want to disappoint anyone so I plan to just put things up when they are ready 8-) Edit: Link to latest Maker’s Ark chapter fixed - thanks to the reader that pointed that out 8-)

24. Thoughts on flashbacks/flashforwards.

My first thought is how the conceit's been abused by shows like damages and how to get away with murder, so my second thought is: NO!!!! 🤬❌❌❌

I'm quite certain it's a device which can be used fine, even well, but they're frequently deployed in a cheap, lazy way to throw the audience off for the sake of it 🙄🙄🙄🙄 I'm also about ready to claim that society has moved beyond the need for samey in media res stuff 🙄

I don't mind a story that's told in parallel in two (or more!) timelines, but i think the story generally needs to be structured around that, rather than random occurrences thrown in.

Also, in writing, I tend to prefer that when it's eg a chapter in each timeline, & where the tone or other (writing!) style cues are different enough that the audience can distinguish btwn timelines without an abuse of italics.

I'm generally not a huge fan of random flashbacks in written stories if the whole isn't structured about them, it typically feels like the info couldve been conveyed otherwise eg the character remembering or retelling the events in the present 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hmm, I think the best writing advice, boring & cliché, as it may sound is:

Write! Start!!!!!! You don't have to have a plan initially, & you don't have to have an aim. The only way to learn is to try, and you cannot improve anything which doesn't exist!

You can fix, or at least improve, it later!! Move on!!!!! Just get something down

Most of writing is editing and/or planning actually, so whatever you can do to find joy in at least one of those processes is gonna be a boon. Try to identify in which of these you'd prefer to put the energy, if it's not ~equal, and hone from there!

Query all received wisdom. Having things in common with many other stories isn't necessarily a positive 🤷🏼‍♀️ experiment! have fun!!!!!!!!

Figure out how to write to your strengths! & figure out how to improve your weaknesses enough you don't find them distracting!!!

Try different formats!!!!!!!

Try varying up your simile language a bit, I swear there's more constructions than 'like a' & 'as the' 🙏

You can learn writing lessons from everywhere so pay attention!!! What phrasing did you like in that song, what storyline felt superfluous in that series, how was the theme conveyed clearly in that otherwise boring movie, why did what that actor said about their character resonate, what topic is often represented bizarrely in media which drives you nuts, what books felt overly moralising & thus annoyed you, how could your ideas have made a way better sequel than what we got &c &c &c

It doesn't matter if you can't do your idea justice -- do the best you can & you'll learn so you can take a better crack at whatever in the future!!!!!!

Clean prose is, to some extent, simple maths 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi! I assume you're asking about ao3? I have zerooo knowledge on anything tumblr-related, so without further ado here is

Imogen's Very Unofficial Guide to Posting on Ao3:

First and foremost, use tags thoroughly. Not an essay-length of them, of course, but covering things past the relationship, fandom, and warnings can go a long way toward you attracting the right readers. Like setting (modern/canon-divergence/omegaverse/post-episode #/etc), relationship dynamics (like top/bottom, which really matters in lucemond lol), any E rating descriptors worthy of note (if any), and of course general themes of the story (hurt/comfort/crack/dead dove: do not eat/etc.). This makes it a lot easier for people who would enjoy your story content to find you amidst everything else posted.

If you're new to tagging, I'd recommend finding a few popular fics that match the content/story of your fic to some extent and seeing how they tag. I also recommend this post if you're very new to tags and looking for a very detailed explanation of them.

Second, especially at the beginning, post regularly. If that means you have to write a couple of chapters up before you post the first, then do so. Readers like consistency. Building that trust at the start will help them stay faithful when Life stuff inevitably comes up. (Obviously this is only relevant if you are posting a multi-chapter fic.)

Third, and this one others may disagree with me on, but have an estimated chapter count as soon as you can. In my opinion, a reader is much more likely to try you out, even if you don't have many kudos/hits/comments yet, if you seem to have a plan. On the other hand, seeing a new story posted with 1/? chapters is not very tempting for most who have been burned before (unless they REALLY like your tags and summary).

Fourth, speaking of summaries, on ao3 a big reason people scroll past your fic 9even if you have tags they like/searched for) is if your summary is bad. Take time and make sure you write a good summary. I would again recommend you look at popular stories most similar to the one you're writing and their summaries. Scrolling through lucemond fics, for instance, there is a very popular format used: throw in a couple of lines from the first chapter as a hook, then on a new line add "Or" and a short sentence or two of explanation. (This is my preferred method, but there are plenty of others too!)

Fourth and last, and probably the hardest---your writing needs to be clean and easy to read. If you think you're already doing everything listed before this pretty well, the main issue may be bad grammar and sentence structure. That's more effort to fix, and often the only cure is writing more and reading more (particularly reading more published fiction). But if you're in a hurry, I know a lot of writers enlist the help of beta readers to catch the big stuff before posting. I don't have any personal experience with using a beta, though, so I have no advice on how to find one unfortunately.

ALTERNATIVELY: Just wait until it's 3 in the morning or you're entirely smashed (or both!) to post it, sleep in until 2pm, and if you wake up and there's no engagement, just delete it and pretend it never happened/try again later 😂 I've done this at least twice over the years.
