he was raised in derry, just south of dublin.

from a big family. elder sister called sinead. he also has a younger sister (aoife), a younger brother (colm), and a collie named lassie because his father lovs cliches (finn hates cliches but loves his dog).

his father was a pub landlord and his mother worked at the market sellin fruit n veg when they met but got a job as a medical receptionist when she had kids cos it meant she cld be there with them in the day and work nights.

his parents met when they were p young and fiesty and rushed into marriage cos they were catholic n just wanted to have sex. his family were literally dirt-poor, but they had a lot of love i guess

hmmmmm his relationship w his father wasn’t the best cos i can’t write character who have healthy relationships w their parents throws up a peace sign. yh, had a pretty emotionally distant, alcoholic violent father n so gets a lot of his bad habits i.e. drinking as a coping mechanism and poor anger management from him BUT anyway

as a kid he was never very motivated in class, he always had a nervous itch to be off somewhere doing something else. struggled under government austerity bcso there just wasn’t the resources to support low income families where the kids had learning difficulties n needed support. fuck the tories am i right

his mum suggested he try sports to help w his restless energy but he was never any good at football so he took up boxing and tap dance instead. he took to tap dancing like a fish to fuckin water. as adhd n found this as a really good way to use his excess energy in a creative way

had a few run ins with the police in his early teens for spray painting and graffiti, but he straightened himself out n now actually considering becoming a detective inspector??? cops are pigs.

he had a youtube channel where he posted videos of him tapdancing and breakdancing as a kid, basically would be a tiktok boy nowadays, n had like... a small fanbase in his early teens. attended several open auditions unsuccessfully, until he was finally cast in billy eliot when he was fifteen.

during billy eliot he began dating an italian dancer called nina. they became dance partners soon after and toured across the republic with various different shows (inc riverdance lol the classic irish stereotype). their relationship was p toxic tbh, they were both very hot tempered people and just used to argue and fight all the time.

he went semi-pro at tap dancing, and nina couldn’t stand being second best so she moved back to italy with her family. ignored his texts, phone calls, etc, eventually he was driven to the point where he used his savings to buy a plane ticket, showed up at her house and she was like wtf?? freaked out and filed a restraining order accusing him of stalking.

he was fined for harassment and then returned home to derry, but after the incident with nina he quit dancing for good and finished his leaving cert before heading to university in the US to get as far away from nina and his past life as poss. and basically since he quit dancing to study forensics (death kink. finn cant get enough of that morgue. just walks around sayin beat u) he’s become a massive grump and jsut doesn’t see the good in people any more.

u’ll find finn in an old man bar drinking whiskey bc he is in fact an old man at heart or sat on his roof smoking a joint, drawing wolves and lions and skeletons and shit, playing call of duty or getting blazed or at the corner of the room in a house party ignoring everyone and scrolling through twitter. is a massive e-boy. always up-to-date on memes and internet slang. has reddit as an app on his phone

not very good at communication. rather than solve his issues by talking, he’d prefer to just solve them through fighting or running away from his problems hence why he has come halfway across the world to get away from an issue which probs cld have been solved w a few apology emails.

born in quigley’s pub on the backstreets of sunny dublin, young finnegan o'callaghan was thrown kicking and screaming into the rowdy suburbs of irish drinking culture. the son of a landlord and a fishwife, he never had much in the way of earnings, but there was never a dull moment in his lively estate, where asbo’s thrived, but community spirit conquered. at school, finn was pegged as lazy and unmotivated, though truly his dyslexia made it hard for the boy to learn in the same environment of his peers and only made him more closed-off in class. struggling with anger management, finn moved from school to school, unable to fit the cookie-cutter mould that school enforced on him, though whilst academic studies were of little interest to the boy, he soon found his true passions lay in recreational activities. immersed into the joys of sport from as young as four, finn was an ardent munster fan and anticipated nothing more than the day he could finally fit into his brother’s old pair of rugby boots.

his calling finally came unexpectedly, not in the form of rugger, but through dance. to learn to express himself in a non-academic way, he began tap dancing, finding therapy in the beat of his soles against the cracked kitchen tiles (much to his mother’s disgrace). it wasn’t a conscious choice, finn just realised one day that dance was something that made him feel. a king of the streets, finn made his fortune on those cobbled pavements – dancing and drawing to earn his keep. by default, finn became a street artist, each penny he earned from his chalk drawings saved in a jam jar towards buying his first pair of tap shoes. though many of his less-than-amiable neighbours called him a nancy and a gaybo, finn refused to quit at his somewhat ‘unconventional’ hobby, for the young scrapper found energy, life, and released anger through the rhythm of tap. soon he branched out into street dance, hip hop, break dancing, lyrical, his days spent smacking his scuffed feet against the broken patio into the night.

when he was thirteen he took up boxing, and as expected, his newfound ‘macho’ pastime conflicted with his dancing. the boxers called him ‘soft’; the dancers called him ‘inelegant’. he felt like two different people; having to choose between interests was like being handed a knife and asked to which half of himself he wished to cut away. he couldn’t afford professional training in dance, with most schools based in england and limited scholarships available. instead, he made the street his studio, racking up a small fanbase on youtube. when he was fifteen he made his debut in billy eliot at the olympia theatre in dublin. enter nina de souza, talented, beautiful and italian; ballet dancer, operatic singer, genius whiz kid, and spoiled brat. she was selfish, conceited, hell bent on getting her own way, and every director’s nightmare. finn fell for her like a house of cards. he’d always had a soft spot for girls who meant trouble. and so their hellish courtship began.

by the time they were seventeen, the two young swans had danced in every playhouse across the republic. they were known in theatres across the country for their tempestuous personalities, their raging arguments with one another, their tendency to drop out of shows altogether without any notice, yet the money kept rolling in and the audiences continued to grow. for three years, their families continued to put up with their hysterical fights followed by passionate reconciliations. he was too possessive, and she was too wild. their carcrash of a relationship finally came to a catastrophic halt when nina broke off the whole affair and returned to italy with her family. for months finn tried to contact her, yet his phone calls, texts, facebook messages were always ignored, until finally he was driven to drastic measures and used his savings to get a plane to her home town. when finn turned up uninvited at nina’s house she freaked out – and rightly so – she contacted her agent, accused him of stalking her, and had a restraining order placed against him. finn was arrested, held in a station overnight, and charged with harassment before he was allowed to return to dublin.

after the incident with nina, finn lost the fight in his eyes. he became far more hostile, far less likely to retaliate with his own fists, and picked fights not for the thrill of feeling his own fists pummel another into a wall, but for the sensation of his own brittle bones cracking. he dropped his tap shoes in a dumpster, stopped talking to his friends, followed his father’s advice and went back to school to complete his leaving certificate. a few short months later, and finn was packing his bags, saying his bittersweet goodbyes, and travelling half-way across the globe to be as far away as possible from his past self, his mess of a life, and most of all nina. it seemed somehow ironic that the boy who had been cautioned by the garda so much during his youth for spray painting, busking without a liscence, and raucous parties would become the grumpy, aloof overseas student studying a degree in criminology; that his once reckless spirit could be crushed so easily.

of all things that finn could be called, straightforward would never be one of them. ever since his first days in atticus, the boy was pegged as hostile, hot-headed, cynical, rude. he seemed to spend more time in his thoughts than engaging in conversation. like a ticking time-bomb, finn’s anger was of the calm kind, liable to explode without a moment’s noticed. his unpredictable personality make him something of an enigma to those who aren’t amiable with the lad, though hostile as he may appear, he harvests a good heart. loyalty lies at the centre of his affections, and whilst his friends are few in number, he makes a lifelong partner. somewhere within finn, there’s still some fight left, but mostly he has recognised that his hedonistic lifestyle did little to leave him fulfilled – mostly, it just emptied him out – and over his three years at university has resigned himself to a nihilistic predicament.

Linguistics: Speech Sounds (the first year)

In English, there are 40 vowels & consonants; about 300 different syllables; and several dozen patterns of stress and tones of voice. However, by the age of 3yrs, a child has learned the basic pronunciation system, and has very little left to learn by the age of 5yrs.

A baby says its first word at around 1yr old, but they are learning to talk long before that. They have to learn a lot about sounds – in particular, about the basic phonetic functions that speech requires. They have to be able to focus their auditory attention (i.e. listen); discriminate different sounds from each other; and also be able to recognize sounds when they are repeated. This is all necessary for learning to speak.

Perceptual abilities

Experiments have been done on day-old babies, in which different recordings of their mother's voice have been played – speaking normally, speaking in a monotone, and also a stranger's voice. The babies paid attention only to their mother's voice speaking normally.

Within the first few days of being born, babies turn their heads to the source of a sound. As early as 2wks old, they prefer human voices to non-human sounds. Researchers think that some auditory training must begin in the womb.

From around four weeks, the ability to discriminate between certain pairs of consonants or vowels (e.g. [pa] vs. [ba]) is present. The fact that this ability develops so quickly supports the idea that children's perceptual apparatus is “programmed” to discriminate between speech sounds – i.e., they are born with specific “feature detectors” that are programmed to respond to the acoustic properties of speech.

Speech comprehension

From 2-4 months old, babies begin to respond to different tones of voice & their meaning (e.g. angry, playful, soothing voices).

From around 6 months old, a baby can recognize how some utterances can relate to specific situations or behaviours – for example, “Bye-bye” or “Clap hands!” The baby might recognize some individual words, such as the names of family members, or basic responses such as yes/no.

Most children understand several words by the time they are one year old.

Pragmatic skills – how people use language

During their first year, babies are also learning how people use language. Right from birth, the mother (and other caretakers, etc) talks to the baby, even though it can't understand what she's saying yet. She responds to the baby's earliest biological noises (e.g. cries, burps, sneezes) & builds them into a conversation, but doesn't use non-vocal activities such as arm-waving.

One study shows that a mother made 100 utterances to her 3-month-old baby while trying to get it to burp – “Where is it?” “Come on, come on.” “You haven't got any.” “I don't belive you.” Etc.

These interactions lay the foundations for conversation. The mother's behaviour isn't random – she asks many questions, with pauses in between, which shows the baby that a response is expected, and provides an opportunity for it to respond. She greets the baby even after short periods of separation.

Also, she tends to talk to the baby only when the child could potentially respond – for example, not while the baby is actively breast-feeding, but when it stops sucking or needs to be burped.

During the first year, the conversational style changes. Around 5wks, as the baby's ability to smile develops, the exchanges become more emotive. Around 2 months old, the baby begins to coo, and she responds in a softer voice. When the baby begins to laugh, the mother's voice becomes more varied as she responds.

The baby begins to take more interest in the environment and looks around, and the mother speaks louder, drawing its attention to different objects. She exaggerates her intonation, and often repeats her sentences. Simple face-to-face games promote communication, such as peek-a-boo.

Around 6 months old, the baby is making more purposeful movements and exploring. The mother responds with more extended commentaries. Also, she is no longer responding to every vocalization, but focuses on the first babbled utterances, which are more structured.

Between 8-10 months old, the baby begins to point to try & attract other people's attention. They “follow” adult conversations by looking at first one person, then the other.

So by the time they say their first words, babies have learned a lot about what a conversation is, and how to take part in it, both from observation and practice.

Speech Production

During its first few weeks, the baby's utterances & sounds reflect only its biological state & activities. Reflexive noises reflect states of hunger, pain or discomfort that cause crying & fussing. Vegetative noises are made by bodily actions such as breathing, swallowing, excreting and burping.

At this age, it's not easy to figure out the reasons for different cries. Hunger & pain cries tend to sound the same (although pain cries are often much tenser, and have a different rhythm). Discomfort cries are much shorter (under a second) and occur in brief sequences.

None of these sounds have anything to do with actual language, but they do share physical features with it – using an air-stream mechanism to produce noise; rhythmical vocalization; using the vocal folds to produce pitch patterns.

From 6-8wks old, the baby begins to coo (usually when in a settled state). These cooing sounds develop alongside crying, and become more frequent and more varied as the baby responds to its mother's speech and smiles. Coos are quieter, lower-pitched, and more musical than crying sounds. They usually consist of a consonant-like sound (produced towards the back of the mouth), followed by a short vowel-like sound. Many are nasal in quality.

Later on (still 6-8wks old), the baby strings cooing sounds together, often 10 or more at a time. There is no rhythmical pattern or clear pitch contours. However, some of the sequences do begin to resemble speech syllables (e.g. [ga] and [gu]). At around 4 months old, the first throaty chuckles & laughter are produced.

During the cooing stage, the baby is performing the first gross motor actions needed for speech production – vertical & horizontal tongue movement; vocal fold movement in co-ordination with the tongue; a lot of lip movement & tongue thrusting, which may be a form of imitation.

When the baby is 20-30wks old (4.5 – 7 months), it begins to use vocal play. These sounds are steadier & much longer than the cooing. Most segments are more than a second long, and they are made up of consonant-vowel sounds that are frequently repeated. They're usually high-pitched, and involve wide glides from high to low. A lot of different consonant & vowel sounds are used. Gradually, the sounds are combined into longer sequences, producing the baby's first utterances.

From 25-50wks, the baby begins to babble. At first, babbling is much less varied than vocal play, in terms of sounds. The baby uses a smaller set of sounds, but with greater frequency & stability.

First, the baby produces reduplicated babbling, with repeated use of the same consonant sound in sequences such as [bababa]. Then, about halfway through the babbling period, variegated babbling emerges, with consonants & vowels changing from one syllable to the next. Now, the syllable lengths and rhythm of the utterances are much closer to real speech. While these babbled utterances seem to have no actual meaning, some may resemble the words of later speech.

It used to be thought that there wasn't any link between babbling & spoken language – that the baby was just trying out every possible sound in a random manner, and that this would stop before it began speaking. However, this is not the case.

Many babies continue babbling long after they begin to speak, sometimes until they're 18 months old. The sounds used in babbling aren't random – they are a very small set of sounds, very similar to those used by those speaking to the baby. Basically, the brain appears to be controlling the development of babbling & early speech in similar ways, so that when the child is intellectually ready to speak, it has a set of well-practised sounds at the ready.

From 9-18 months, melodic utterances are produced. Towards the end of the first year, variations in pitch, rhythm and tone of voice become a major feature, & thus the utterances have a more well-defined shape. Parents begin to sense meanings behind the utterances, and often attribute meanings to them (e.g. questioning, greeting, calling or wanting). The child starts producing proto-words – individual syllables with a fixed intonation, in which the sounds are clear, but it's not certain what they mean. These are the first signs of language development.

Up to around 9 months old, it's not possible to tell what languages are being spoken around a baby. But once intonation and rhythm begin to appear, the differences are quite obvious.

“This is my great-grandma, Christina Levant Platt at age 100, weeding her garden. She was born into slavery. Her “owner” was a wife that taught my great grandma to read and write secretly, which was illegal and quite dangerous at that time for both of them. She learned to read the Bible. She had 11 children, she lost two, one son was one of the first black attorneys in US. She sent the 4 boys to college in Boston. Exceptional in those days. She passed 5yrs before I was born but I love her as if I knew her. Family tells me she would say “ I put prayers on my children’s children’s heads”. This apparently worked💜 Around April 12, 1861, Christina was at the 1st battle of the CIVIL WAR, in Fort Sumter at Charleston Bay, South Carolina, working in the cotton fields. She said “the sky was black as night” from cannonball fire. She saw a man decapitated by a cannonball. She was the water girl for the other slaves as a young girl and “ the lookout” for the slaves in the fields for the approaching overseer on horseback as they secretly knelt and prayed for their freedom. She would watch for the switching tail of the approaching horse and would alert the slaves to rise up and return to picking cotton before he saw them. She eventually married a Native American from the Santee Tribe. John C, Platt. After freedom, Christina insisted upon taking her children north as she knew they would not get a good education in the south, and that’s all she cared about. She died at age 101 in 1944, where she and her husband had built a home in Medfield, Massachusetts, the first black family to move there. With great respect, I honor my great grandmother. So much more I could say about this miraculous woman. She gave me much strength in my hard times. Whenever I thought I was having a hard day, I would think of her and shrug it off. I was hit from behind on Wednesday evening heading to work. The driver was ticketed by the police and their insurance company has admitted full liability. Injury wise, I have whiplash which thankfully, is going away now. My car, according to their adjuster, is going to be claimed as totaled. So, my car is valued at 7400, and repairs just from visual inspection, are 7015. So they are going the totaled route as its cheaper for them. After they buy the car from me, they will sell it to salvage, expect to get 2k from it, and only be out 5400 instead of a full cost of repairs. So I've had the car for a year and half, taken out on a 5yr car loan. I still owe 12k on it. After they cut a check to the lean holder, I'm still responsible for 5k on that loan. The bank and my insurance at the time didn't offer gap insurance. Stupid of me, I let my current policy expire to search around for a more affordable policy. I kept procrastinating, and the accident happened with me having no insurance. Lucky he hit me and is at fault. I'm trying to see what my options are. I've gone to the liable company's website and see their basic plan for my state, law requires 25k in property liability for at fault accidents, plus medical etc. So I'm wondering what should I expect from the lady handling this claim. I'm not fooled when she called me yesterday and said that she is here to work with and for me. Saying that there is probably a lot of talk about lawyers, just know they will take 30-40% of you settlement. Know that I'm here to work for you, try to work with me I'm thinking my head total bull crap. 1, she works for her insurance company first, and will have their interest first, 2, she works for their client and to protect them from me in a suit. In the end, I'm not stuck with a car that they will not fully pay to have repaired, and will still owe 5k after they pay the loan holder the value of the car. She had 11 children, she lost two, one son was one of the first black attorneys in US. She sent the 4 boys to college in Boston. Exceptional in those days.

She passed 5yrs before I was born but I love her as if I knew her. Family tells me she would say “ I put prayers on my children’s children’s heads”. This apparently worked💜

Around April 12, 1861, Christina was at the 1st battle of the CIVIL WAR, in Fort Sumter at Charleston Bay, South Carolina, working in the cotton fields.

She said “the sky was black as night” from cannonball fire. She saw a man decapitated by a cannonball.

She was the water girl for the other slaves as a young girl and “ the lookout” for the slaves in the fields for the approaching overseer on horseback as they secretly knelt and prayed for their freedom. She would watch for the switching tail of the approaching horse and would alert the slaves to rise up and return to picking cotton before he saw them.

She eventually married a Native American from the Santee Tribe. John C, Platt.

After freedom, Christina insisted upon taking her children north as she knew they would not get a good education in the south, and that’s all she cared about. She died at age 101 in 1944, where she and her husband had built a home in Medfield, Massachusetts, the first black family to move there.

With great respect, I honor my great grandmother.

So much more I could say about this miraculous woman. She gave me much strength in my hard times.

I had a collision a few weeks before and it is classified as collision damage. I received an estimate at a body shop who initially provided an estimate of $xxxxx/- and said that the insurance company has agreed to pay them and a delivery date was given. Now, things have changed in the middle and the body shop manager tells me a new stories of additional things that went wrong due to collision (all of a sudden) and that the insurance agent after inspection wants to call it a total loss based on this new estimate. My insurance company- State farm wants it to call a total loss which I doubt given the extent of repair it might take for the minor damage in the front fender alone. Now, here are my questions. I now have suspicion on the integrity of the body shop as well the trick palyed in declaring total loss. 1. Can I have a second opinion at a different body shop? Does State farm allow that? 2. If the repair cost is more than the ACV, and if I still wish to keep the car, can I negotiate for the max amount less deductible that State farm is willing to pay the body shop (xx% of the max amount that state farm is willing to pay before declaring total loss) and I take care of the remaining cost? I am 18 and currently on my fathers motor trade insurance. This covers me for anything upto 1600cc for social and domestic, you are actually having a laugh 1600cc is a joke! I can drive anything for business purposes. Recently rang the insurance to see if they would insure me on an IVECO DAILY 2.8 turbo diesel, as i was delivering some furniture to my grand parents in malta, about 1000 miles away from the uk, 2000 mile round trip. The answer i got was a blatant no, i didn't even get chance to say .8, anyway i was so pissed off i did the trip. didn't have one accident what so ever, not even a near miss when i drove to malta there and back. explain why they wouldn't insure me i really don't understand. My dads friend who is 53 years old was born not to drive a car, he has an accident atleast once a week because he mentally switches off when he drives. He drove down to germany any rolled his car times on the autobahn and i didn't have a crash or a near miss once in a 3.5 ton van, where is the common sense surely they should coin the people who litterally can't drive?

I've been in 2 accidents. The first was very minor; I rolled into the bumper in the car in front of me at a stop light and scratched their bumper. At the scene the policewoman told me I was at fault, but when I talked to my claims adjuster, she told me that there is some negligence on the other party's part because if I had just randomly pulled out into traffic, the other party would have hit the front of my car, not the driver-side door. I am being sued by the first person and I found out just now I am being sued by the person in the second accident as well. I was told that since I am registered under my parents insurance, the other party can see that they have a lot of assets they can sue for from my parents. My question is, why are they able to sue me so easily? I've done research, and I know Florida is a no-fault state, meaning drivers cannot sue each other unless serious injury occurred, such as loss of life, limb, permanent injury, etc. In both accidents, I did not get ticketed, and I believe no police report was written, only exchanges of information.(Police were called, however. I did not leave the scene) Also both of the other parties did not ask for an ambulance or medical assistance(I know about the feeling pain later thing) but I'm sure if someone was suing for something as serious that can be listed as loss of limb or death, they would have showed some indication of injury at the scene. Last year I got a traffic ticket for speeding. I am insured through AAA. We were only recently married and the car I drive is registered through my parent's name as they bought the car. I am not the primary subscriber and I am just down as a driver. My husband has his own car insured through State Farm Insurance. I realize that my own car insurance would be affected but would my husband's? We dont have the same last name, Im not on his insurance in any way other than perhaps a driver but even that I dont think we have updated. We got a notification from State Farm that his rates will go up now because of my violation, in my own car, through my own seperate company. Is this right? Can they do that? Does this mean that both AAA and State Farm get to raise the rate on me?

I'm seventeen years old and I think I have depression. All teenagers are emotional, I get that, but I know this is more. When I'm occupied and around people for a few hours at a time or less, I'm fine and usually even happy. Then when I actually have time to stop and think and let my mind wander, I usually feel kind of hopeless and just very sad. I also have other emotional issues, like the littlest things seem to enrage me. Also, I read somewhere that depression can cause physical issues such as digestive issues (which I have been having a lot of the past four or five months). I cancel plans a lot now, either because my stomach is acting up or I feel too sad to go anywhere and I just dont want to be bothered with people. Ive been sleeping a lot more than normal lately because thats the only time things dont bother me. When I was about thirteen I had an issue with cutting, I would talk to my guidance counselor (which is not an option now because I did home schooling and now am done with school until college next fall) and when she realized that I may have some more serious issues, she called my mom. My mom always brushed it off. She talked to me a total of one time, only when I went to my older cousin and my cousin forced my mother to talk to me. Basically, my mom got mad because I said I didnt feel comfortable talking to her and she refused to send me to a counselor, then she said she would send me to a counselor (at that time I had insurance) but she never actually ended up doing anything. So I went back to doing what I always do, pretending to be fine, and for the most part I controlled it. I stopped cutting until about seven months ago, which was also when all my other issues started popping up. I havent cut myself in a few months now, but I still have the urge to which is not okay. Depression and other mental health issues run in my family, and I keep thinking of one particular relative who got so bad that she took her own life. I know that at some point she must have been like me, where it was difficult but still somewhat manageable, and it just scares me that I could get to the point she was at. I have no insurance, and we have very little money. I know Yahoo Answers isnt the ideal place to seek advice, but I dont know where to go. I only have one true friend that I trusted enough to tell, and obviously she is my age so shes just as clueless as me.
