At the convention today, I had a past reader come in and ask me a question:

"So was the identity of the narrator in the last chapter of the last book intentionally left vague?"

See, that series is written in the first person, and the narrator of each chapter is named in the chapter title-- except in that last segment, which is titled "epilogue".

There are only two characters in the scene, and the narrator is never once referred to by name or pronouns. The familiarity of the narrator to the other character suggests one of two possible people, one male and one female, but the narration never actually says which.

And the thing is? That ambiguity actually adds a lot of depth to the scene-- depending on who the narrator is, it can speak to redemption or reconnection, about passing the torch of responsibility and caretaking or coming full circle to return to the arms of the original caretaker, whether the bond between people is innate to the soul or about the ways people seek out familiar relationship patterns across multiple people, and so on and so forth, and it would have been absolutely brilliant--

If I hadn't just completely forgotten to include the narrator's name.
