Pocahontas/John Smith Fic Rec List

In light of my recent inability to be chill at all about this ship or the movie, I've put together a fic rec list for the perusal of anyone wanting to dip in the waters with me.

I generally kept to one fic per author, but quite a few of these writers have some impressive catalogues of fic; and although I picked one personal fave per author for this list, there are a TON of excellent picks on these authors' pages, so please, please check them out!

A series of one shots following the second film, exploring the lives of John Smith and Pocahontas. Like the film, it is loosely based on historical events.

Notes: This is an EPIC and, if I were to pick, like, a 'Citizen Kane' of P/JS fic, it would be this one. Basically, it's an expansion on the world of the film, and reframes the story a little more realistically. It's got EVERYTHING. It's got a deep study of both leads, complex political maneuvering, John Smith's Pretty People Problems (obsessed with this), gay lil Thomas having a Lot to deal with, Pocahontas being smarter than everyone, and romanceeeeeee. *muah* c'e bella.

Incomplete Fics:

Glory to Glory by pearl037 [ ff.net | Ao3 ]

When John Smith returns to England, Pocahontas is left as the mediator between the settlers and her people. When a bad growing season forces them to cease trading, the new captain will stop at nothing to ensure the survival of his colony. Meanwhile, England prepares for war. Multi-perspective. All rights belong to Disney and history. Part XIII is up!

Notes: There's some wonderful characterization in this, and an excellent exploration of grief that just gets me in the gut. It's more-or-less an alternate sequel, and builds up the setting around both the denizens of Jamestown and John's gang of fugitives (queen behavior).

This is a continuation from a "Pocahontas" fanfiction 'The Burning' published in 1999. He had never dared hope to see her alive and laughing, vibrant and beautiful. T/M

Notes: I'm not sure where the predecessor of this fic is (although I'll continue to try). It's a rare modern AU, with a twist. You can piece together what happened before the fic, and the intensity of the universe it happens in. To keep in line with the setting, Pocahontas has a different name, which can be jarring, but once you get past it the premise is interesting and the story, compelling.

It's a wide, wide fic, and includes interpretations of a TON of Disney characters. I included this because the Pocahontas/John Smith subplot absolutely fucking wrecked me, and I needed to share. The last update the fic got threw me in the back of a van and beat me with an aluminum baseball bat. This fic is unfinished as of now, but even if it's never updated again, it's worth a read. Just be sure to read all of the author's notes!

The Parent Trap by astolat -- [megop]. this one i REALLY enjoy, centered in the tfp universe, the autobots discover megatron had a sparkling and optimus has a mental breakdown bc of it. the kid is also very chaotic. it has just the right amount of angst, the icing on top of it

My Love is a Fever by spaceliquid -- [megop]. this one is set on the idw universe, it made me giggle a lot while reading it, it's a crack fic. optimus got himself locked up by aliens, and to get him out, megatron tries a very.. interesting plan !!

Like a Box of Chocolates by auri_mynonys -- [megop]. tfp !! if u like lots of fluff and married old men being goofs (while also unconsciously terrifying a poor bot just doing her job) then this one is for u !! the ending made me smile :)

Pay Unto Evil by lord_squiggletits (megatrons_mouth_laser) -- [megop]. idw1 and shattered glass !!! oh this one is DARK. it gets dark and it WILL make u cry and rip everything apart. fluffy and also not fluffy at all at the same time. has lots of violence and angst, i really liked it !!! :3

Accidental War Criminal Acquisition by Spoon888 -- no megop for once, set in g1. crack fic and cranky kid ahead, this one is still on-going but is very fun and fluffy !! does get dark at times !!! but it's okay because dadimus prime and dadtchet are there to save the day

Lunch Date by Chuzillla -- [megop]. EARTHSPARK YIPPIEE. this one is the cafe au we needed, crack fic and very silly !!! these old men go on a "date". megatron is confused and optimus is just happy he got to take advantage of this very convenient sale :3

any Astarion fic recs??

I don't really read fic, unforch. I've only recently started writing it myself. Fanfic reading has never been a part of my participation in fandom. Mainly because I have incredibly sensitive "he would not say that" antennae. They twitch and tremble at the slightest thing.

Which is a bad thing, mind you. I am aware of it. But as someone with chronic writer brain, whenever something doesn't fit my particular made up scenarios, I go "no this is incorrect." This isn't a slight against the fanfic writers out there, I just have brainworms.

I do read a lot of like headcanon compilation thingies. Some short drabbles about my favorite scenes. None have stuck with me so far, but if one does, I'll make sure to reblog it, and that'll functionally be a rec.

im realizing when i look at my stats for ao3 i dont pay attention to hits or kudos- the thing i pay most attention to is the amount of bookmarks. because those show me that someone liked my work enough that they wanted to read it again later!!

if you like my fics then please please bookmark them if you like!! thats the way i measure popularity on my fics personally, because when i think something is really good, i want to read it more than once.

This miraculous movie is the most high budget fan fiction that I would give a solid 3/5 to. I can see all the decisions they made to fit the whole story into one movie, the things they had to ditch because they're too interesting to fit in an hour and a half, the characters they had to flatten and major points they left out for??? Time reasons I guess? But they would have had more time if they dropped the musical numbers that were... not horrible I guess but MLB does not lend itself to a musical.

Letting Adrien learn about his father? His father changing his ways? The reveal between them? Solid fanfiction points. Those are the plot bunnies that inspire fanfiction to begin with. Definitely not better than the original, but in terms of fanfiction, well written and worth consuming but it doesn't really scratch the itch that drives me to fanfiction.

If this were a story published on AO3 I'd probably skip in a dozen times until I came back to read it after ive read the ones that are in my favorite tag just because it doesn't have tags I dislike and it happens to be complete. Then after I read it I'd give it a 3/4 for well developed and wrapped up, but too much mischaracterization and for some reason changing Ladybug's power? Her creating random objects that she can use to defeat the Akuma is way too important for me to endorse her Magic Fix-It Fingers. Also... they didn't have to find the Akuma it was just Punch Until Done?

This was a high-budget fanfiction where the creator clearly likes MLB for the relationships and doesn't care about the world building. Which is cool. Everyone enjoys their favorite things in different ways and that shows in our homages, but for MLB I care more about the word building and character development than the relationships.

But the animation was really pretty.

#the relationships are important parts of the character development #but not THE most important #for me the miraculous are about giving these kids what they need not what they want #chat noir is about freedom not confidence #ladybug is about confidence and creativity #i get cutting the other heroes to avoid too much in one movie #i brows the 'reveal' tag but more for it causing drama not just to fix their love square #so if you think of the mvoie as a visual AO3 story i think it would be that story with lots of kudos and several reviews #that i get around to eventually but probably wouldnt even bookmark #i dont think it was bad #i just think seasons 3-5 leave it in the dust #they should have made a movie for each season
