FICTIONAL CHARACTER ASK: CINDERELLA’S STEPSISTERS

Favorite thing about them: Besides the fact that its nice to have two more ladies who fill a cast of five main female characters (or in the case of the Grimm’s Aschenputtell, four, since the Fairy Godmother is out of that version), as someone who is not the best when it comes to fashion knowledge, their fashionista sensibilities and antics is always fun to read and/or watch.
Least favorite thing about them: The fact that they participate in and benefit of Cinderella’s abuse is reason enough to dislike those two, but there’s also the reason that most of the time, while the two stepsisters are usually differentiated phisically, personality wise book writers and screen writers in adaptations don’t always bother to differentiate them. The two tend to be portrayed as just one entity present to be greedy, mean spirited and abusive to Cinderella, to the point that when the german series Grimm’s Finest Fairy Tales adapted the Grimm’s Aschenputell variant, they reduced the two stepsisters into one, Anabella, because of how much they were interchangeable as characters.
Three things i have in common with them:
-I don’t even like thinking about domestic chores.
-I have siblings, and could relate to the rivalry and fights during my childhood.
-I have experience with being awkward in social gatherings.
Three things i don’t have in common with them:
-I never had servants at home.
-I wasn’t a kid spoiled by my relatives.
-Again, when it comes to choosing clothing, i first go searching wich ones are the most confortable, not so much wich ones are the most beautifull to impress others.
Favorite line:
These lines from the Perrault version, first exchanging dialogue between themselves:
"For my part, I will wear my red velvet suit with French trimming."
"And I shall have my usual petticoat; but then, to make amends for that, I will put on my gold-flowered cloak, and my diamond stomacher, which is far from being the most ordinary one in the world."
And then this lines exchanged betweem them and Cinderella, while making preparations for the first ball:
“Cinderella, would you not like to go to the ball?"
"Alas! You only jeer me; it is not for such as I am to go to such a place."
"You are quite right," they replied. "It would make the people laugh to see a Cinderwench at a ball.”
And this other exchange, when they tell about seeing the mysterious beautifull lady of the first ball, without knowing she was Cinderella herself
"If you had been at the ball, you would not have been tired with it. The finest princess was there, the most beautiful that mortal eyes have ever seen. She showed us a thousand civilities, and gave us oranges and citrons."
"She must, then, be very beautiful indeed; how happy you have been! Could not I see her? Ah, dear Charlotte, do lend me your yellow dress which you wear every day."
"Yes, to be sure! Lend my clothes to such a dirty Cinderwench as you are! I should be such a fool."
brOTP: Each other, if they aren’t constantly trying pull at the other’s hair and jumping at the other’s troat. Cinderella, in versions where they genuinelly come to repent their ways and love her as their sister. And in crossover land, Beauty’s two sisters from Beauty and the Beast.
OTP: The nobles who wed them in the Perrault version. In the Disney version, i ship Anastasia, the younger red headed sister, with the Baker in Cinderella II: Dreams Come True.
nOTP: Each other, Cinderella, or the Prince.
Random Headcanon:
The two court nobles who marry them in the Perrault version are two of Beauty’s three brothers, who rised into nobility after their illustrious younger sister married the Prince who was once a Beast.
Unpopular Opinion:
I hope people already stoped calling them “Ugly Stepsisters”. In both the Perrault version, Cendrillon, and the Grimm’s Aschenputtell, they are both described as phisically conventionally beautifull, and what sends most people away from them is the fact that they lack the non phisical beauty of kindness, and without that virtue they are underserving of any rewards from life. Is in adaptations, like the 1950 Disney animated version, the 1965 iteration of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical, or fairy tale hodge podges like the Shrek movies, that equated them being considered phisically ugly with being mean spirited. And usually what those versions call being “ugly” is having big noses, like in the 1950 Disney animated version, being fat, like in both the 1965 and 1997 iterations of the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical and the Grimm’s Fairy Tale Classics anime series, or being transgender coded, like in the Shrek movies, wich is very, very problematic. Hopefully people start noticing this and stop equating being considered conventionally beautifull with being a good in future retellings.

Hi Alex, I just finished the last podcast and it was fun as always. Ok I have a theory. Even though the name of the chapter is still not confirmed 5x11 title is supossed to be "Strange Bedfellows", It's a movie from 1965 where a couple gets married but they can't connect, 7 years later they see each other and they slept together wich is the only good thing in the couple. I thought that would be conected to Barchie, but since we know what happened yesterday, it kinda looks like Varchie. Thoughts?
Hm, interesting theory! As usual it’s tough to draw a one to one with Riverdale titles, but if it is “Strange Bedfellows,” and that’s the movie they’re referencing, what if it’s Bughead? This is too many theories at once, but I think if we get them bumping into each other next episode and discovering they’re working the same case, then drawing closer in 5x10 leading to a kiss at the end, we could get the first episode after the break as a flashback episode (or partially) showing what happened with Jughead over the past seven years, why he’s traumatized, what’s up with his blackouts, and what happened with the voicemail - among other things.
Again, too many theories at the same time! So just throwing it out there.

A troubled young man, David Peters (Ian Holm), claims, "Once dreams were possible, that's what the popular songs told us." Rejecting rock music of the day, Peters is immersed in the tunes of Thirties crooner Al Bowlly (killed during the London blitz). He collects Bowlly memorabilia, publishes the Bowlly fan-club newsletter, and finds pleasure in lip-synching Bowlly records but his obsession with Bowlly masks certain darker events in his past.
DOCTOR ASTROV (UNCLE VANYA, 1991)

In this televised production of Anton Chekhov’s play, Sir Ian Holm plays a village medic who, at the start, is an idealist with great passion for the preservation of trees. But, as time passes, everyone ignores what he says and he falls in love with a married woman, the character of Doctor Astrov slowly grows more and more tired and disappointed with himself, the world and humanity, fallin in alcoholism.
POD CLOCK (THE BORROWERS AND RETURN OF THE BORROWERS, 1992-93)

I dare say that, despite being 61 years old at the time, this is the role in wich i felt Sir Ian Holm performed the most of phisical acting. Pod Clock is the patriarch of a family of people that are the size of little fingers, and to raise his family, he has to ride sinks, run away from cats and big birds and be carefull of mouse traps to borrow food and other needs. All the while trying to avoid being seen by humans. That’s what i call an action hero.

CAPTAIN FLUELLEN (HENRY V, 1989)

In this Kenneth Branagh adaptation of the William Shakespeare historical play, we see Sir Ian Holm performance as Captain Fluellen, a man that is a geek of military tactics history as he is proud of being welsh. Fluellen has a fun energy that makes him likable, at the same time that he is intimidating in his ruthleness in support a cruel execution in the name of military discipline.
VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN/THE CREATURE (MISTERY AND IMAGINATION: FRANKENSTEIN, 1968)

Before Benedict Cumberbatch in theater, there was Sir Ian Holm portraying both Doctor Victor Frankenstein and his Creature in this televised 1968 adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous gothic sci-fi novel. His portrayal of the two characters is one of the most closest to the book characterization’s to this day: Victor Frankenstein as an ambitious and self-absorved student, and the Creature as a person who tries to be good, but due to abandonment and discrimination suffered due to his phisical appearance, becomes corrupted with an obsession for revenge against his creator. And Sir Ian puts those foil personalities marvellously.
LENNY (THE HOMECOMING, 1973)

The Homecoming is a 1973 British-American drama film directed by Peter Hall based on the play of the same name by Harold Pinter.
In a dreary North London flat, the site of perpetual psychological warfare, a philosophy professor , Teddy, visits his family after a nine-year absence, and introduces his father, Max, his uncle, Sam, and two brothers, Lenny and Joey, to his wife Ruth.
Sir Ian Holm plays Lenny, a pimp who only makes discreet references to his "occupation" and his clientele and flats in the city (London). He is the character with the most cynical lines and who start the sexual tension between the man of the family with Ruth, not carrying at all if she is married to his brother Teddy.
There’s a character that anyone will love to hate.    
PHILLIPE D'ARNOT (GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES, 1984)

A Belgian explorer who discovered Tarzan (John Clayton) in the jungle, taught him the way of man, and brought him to his family in England. Is Phillipe’s friendship with Tarzan and their eventual departure that becomes the emotional core of the picture.
LEWIS CARROLL (DREAMCHILD, 1985)

“Dreamchild” is a film written by screenwriter and playwright Dennis Potter. It was actually effectively a remake of an earlier project of his: the 1960s TV Play “Alice,” which had starred George Baker as Charles Dodgson, a.k.a Lewis Carroll – the man behind the “Alice” stories. But while “Alice” had been focused on Dodgson himself and his experiences with Alice Liddell (the little girl who inspired him to write the stories) and her family, “Dreamchild” takes a different approach. The 1985 film focuses instead on an elderly Alice Hargreaves (nee Liddell), who visits America to celebrate Dodgson’s centenary. During her stay, she has various nightmares, flashbacks, and hallucinations. Some of these have her seeing characters from the books, such as the Mock Turtle, the Mad Hatter, and the Caterpillar. Others are reflections on her childhood and the time she knew Lewis Carroll. Holm plays Carroll in these sequences, and the film plays with several myths and rumors about his relationship with Alice and her family…but it does so in a very clever way. Unlike the earlier TV play, which seems to treat these rumors and myths as fact, “Dreamchild” is far more ambiguous: nothing is confirmed or denied. It’s simply presented, and the audience is left to decide what is true, what is false, and how much it all really matters in the end. Holm brilliantly handles this ambiguity: in another actor’s hands, the character could have been perceived as thoroughly unsavory, but there’s such a gentleness, kindness, and overall innocence to Holm’s work that you can never really feel frightened or bothered. You feel for the man, no matter his flaws, and it makes his story just as compelling as Alice’s own.
RICHARD III (THE WARS OF THE ROSES, 1965)

The Wars of the Roses was a 1963 theatrical adaptation of William Shakespeare's first historical tetralogy (1 Henry VI, 2 Henry VI, 3 Henry VI and Richard III), which deals with the conflict between the House of Lancaster and the House of York over the throne of England, a conflict known as the Wars of the Roses. The plays were adapted by John Barton, and directed by Barton himself and Peter Hall at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The broadcast was so successful that they were shown again, in a differently edited form, in 1966. 
In this production, the major theme is how the dispute for the crown of king is an endless cycle of violence that traps people, and this theme is highlighted in Sir Ian Holm’s performance as Richard III. His portrayal is more humanized and tragic, showing he was first a loving son and brother, until the vision of his father’s death in battle and the mistakes that his older brother, Edward IV,  makes at the start of his reign, motivates him to become king, no mather if it is even at the cost of his relatives lifes. At first, Richard looks like he is in control of the situation, but later, as the final battle comes close, frightened by the ghost of the people he killed, he has to confront the harsh truth: Richard is only another pawn in the game of chest of a bloody History. Just like every other king that camed before him.
PUCK (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, 1968)

Sir Ian Holm played the character of Puck, a.k.a Robin Goodfellow, in a 1968 feature film adaptation of the play. The feature was poorly received at the time, but has gained a bit more of a following in recent years, particularly from avid Shakespeareans. Its chiefest pro is probably the casting of Holm in the role of Puck:  he’s quick-witted, curious, and just a little baudy, but with a sharp and slightly dangerous intensity to him. You’re never quite sure what to make of Puck, and that makes him interesting, as he leaps from scene to scene, spreading chaos everywhere he turns.
FRODO AND BILBO BAGGINS (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, 1981 AND 2001-03)

The most famous nephew and uncle in literature. He played the nephew in the radio in 1981, and the uncle in the feature films between 2001-03.
A lot of people were introduced to Sir Ian Holm’s work and becamed Lord of the Rings after being introduced to those performances.
In both roles, he was merry, he was funny, he was frightened, he was scary, he was brave and determined, he was sad. And all of us, listeners and viewers, related to those feelings transmited by his performances as Frodo and Bilbo.
Everyone has talked a lot about those performances, and everyone will probably will still be talking about them in the future.

Summary: A simple rescue mission will bring him back to a place full of nightmares, and maybe this time he could find redemption. Situated in 1975, 2 years after the events of Skull Island.

There was just one village before crossing to Borneo, it had been two weeks since your little crew met Shukri and three days since you got proper rest and shelter, and some kind villagers gave you proper tents to camp the rest of the travel, however now your team had other problems.
"Slow down doc!" Mills voice was one second away from losing all patience and a little to close to throwing you out of the truck. "You are going to drown it!! Stop it!!" The other three men looking from the ground were to worried about their only transport possibly crashing against a three to make fun of you so you choose to call it a day and stop the engine for good.
"I'm so sorry" You told Glenn giving back the keys, "Maybe Reles could give it a go, or we are never making it on time, not with your hand like that" you said again looking at the man and the bandage you had put on his hand after he got burn trying to fix the motor of the truck.
"Maybe we could just rest, we can figure it out tomorrow" Conrad said remembering how close you were to die thanks to Reles driving a couple days before. You rolled your eyes at him but agreed anyway, since he didn't have that look ready to fight he tend to have every time you responded at him, it had been like that for the past two days, something about this lonely roads apparently upset him.
Once the night was upon you, and the fire was dancing happily and Slivko and Joe made sure to have something other than canned beans for dinner all the man were gathered next to it. You had tried to ask them apart about your father getting nowhere, and maybe it was time for a more direct approach.
"So tell me, how all of you guys meet? And don't say war because I won't buy it" you said putting apart the rest of the fish you were trying to eat that now you were not so sure it was edible.
"But we did Doc" Reles said still eating his fish. "At least Reg, Mills and I, we all did time In Vietnam, Captain Conrad joined later" He said pointing to the man who haven't even touch his food.
"Hey prince charming!" You called him, at this point your little nickname was not bothering any of you so you just roll with it. "How did you meet this fine gentlemen??" You asked when he finally met your gaze, but the sadness in his eyes made you shut and you changed the topic before he could answer. "Anyway, I understand you all work for Monarch now, what's that like?" You said and apparently touch a sensitive spot because the four man start looking at each other trying to communicate without speaking "I figured it must be extremely boring specially since you got to work with my father delusions isn't it?" You add receiving more elusive looks "Oh for fucks sake, I know Randa is dead, I'm not going to burst into tears for him, you can cut the crap already, what the hell happened to him?!!" You scream at them and Slivko finally look in your direction.
"Look Y/N" He started, aside from Conrad he was the only other person to call you by your name, maybe after your little sleepover in the truck or simply because you haven't stop him from doing so "How we end up working in Monarch, and how your father died are related, but is not our place to tell, god knows I wish I could forget, I'm sure Brooks will tell you when we come back" he was determined to shut the subject down, but at least he confirmed Randa was dead, a knot form in your chest when you hear it, but now was not the time.
"He was my father and I'm pretty sure Houston didn't send you to get me back to the funeral, I deserve to know what happened, I'm not some little child that you can lie to and will blindly follow you" you insisted and Conrad that had been silent the whole time finally spoke.
"You are right, all this secrecy is ridiculous and you deserved to know what are coming back to, but not here, come on let's take a walk" He said standing up and offering you a hand to stand.
"Are you sure Captain?" Reles asked, not doubting his reasoning but maybe your strength to take the information, wich hurt you a little.
"No, but she is right, come on" He start walking, and yo didn't take the hand he offered you but walked behind him closely.
He was following a path that was very clear for him, but invisible for you, and if you didn't knew better you would have said he was trying to make you lean on him to walk the jungle. After five minutes of jumping rocks and pretending you knew what you were doing and following the dim light he was carrying one of your ankles finally gave up and made you almost fall, and you were upset since he didn't try to catch you.
"Are you going to let me help you now?" He ask offering his hand again, and swallowing your pride you take it.
"Fine, but don't get ideas" you said to him rolling your eyes again.
"Don't worry I won't" He said pulling you closer to his chest without any effort and lifting you the of the way in a very humorous position, and you could feel his grin every time you uselessly complain trying to make him put you down.
"What the fuck was that?" You asked him once you were on the ground.
"You were taking forever" He said simply, and showed you a small clean area next to a creek. "We can sit here, not many vicious creatures come this way don't worry" He said sitting down and taking off his boots to put his feet in the water.
"And you know that because" You ask doubtfully
"Your father and Brooks hired me as a tracker about two years ago, and eight years before that, as I have told you I was here, I sadly didn't have a crazy secret admirer with an army to lend me a truck so I had to walk this bloody jungle on my own" He said looking at the calm water and you finally sit next to him.
"I'm glad you no longer call him my husband" you told him and he let go a chuckle before looking down again "ok, why does Randa hired you as a tracker?"
"To find something obviously, deep in the Pacific, a recently discovered Island, just a bunch of scientist and geologist" He said obviously lying.
"And the soldiers? Were the rocks that hard to measure?" You asked, and he then turn his face completely serious, he then proced to tell you a story, the most fantastic and terrifying story you ever heard, so obviously fabricated that might as well be the truth, and if so the very concept of reality you lived in was compromised, however there was one detail he neglected to reveal.
"And a handful of us, make it to the extract point back to America, and we have been working with Monarch ever since" He concluded.
"How did he died?" You asked in almost a whisper.
"What? You really have no other questions?" He asked surprised.
"Look, you said there was a 100 feet Ape, it could be a 100 feet Easter Bunny for all I care, I need to know how Randa died" you told him more decided than you actually feel.
"The skullcrawlers got him, we couldn't help him" he said after a while and you nodded silently fighting the tears that for some reason were forming in your eyes, and your mind was in the postcard he sent you two years before.
"Well, at least he prove to someone he was right, all those years, the missing birthdays, the fighting, the humiliation, and he was always right" you said and the knot in your chest was now in your throat "I changed my name so nobody will know I was his daughter and he was right all along, the daughter of the year right? And he died surrounded by strangers..." you start sobbing and he tried to hold you, you needed that but chose to put him away, because that pain right there was well deserved. "It's ok, it's stupid, why am I even crying? I haven't seen him in years, I just thought... I don't know I thought maybe one day we will be together again on my terms maybe, I always wanted him to know he was still my dad...that would never happen now right?" you said bitterly.
"He wanted that too." He said putting a hand on your shoulder and when you didn't push him apart he add "He make Brooks promise he would found you if something happened to him, that's why he send us, I'm sure he knew" he gave you a look full with compassion and you were fighting the urge to hide in his arms again so you change the subject.
"Why do we have to walk here? I mean you could have told me at the camp" you said and he took his arm off your shoulder.
"I felt the need to visit this place one more time" he said all serious again.
"It's a beautiful place, but I suspect that's not the reason, what happened?" You asked sure he was not responding but glad your heart was no longer exposed, you took your feet of the water and sited with your legs crossed facing at him.
"It was 1965," He started doing the same as you did, the flashlight was in between you two making the space intimate, almost romantic. "I took on a mission from the Malaysian government to rescue the illegitimate daughter of a Malaysian woman and a British embassy worker," He started surprising you, but you avoid making any comments so he could share his story "Her name was Jenny, she was kidnapped and held for ransom by whom we thought were rogue Indonesian soldiers, I have a team of five men, and we manage to locate Jenny and we were taking her home, however we were ambushed and Jenny and two of my men were killed, just about to reach the border" He said, and you could feel the pain in his voice, you wanted to hold him, but you fear his rejection so you only keep listening. "When I went to check the bullet wound on her head I realized it came from a sniper, Jenny, the nicest sweetest seven year old you'll ever meet was just a token to ignite the political scene at the time, nobody care if she ever came back to her mother" He covered his face and even at the weak light of the flashlight you could see the tears being held with more dignity than you. "You said when you knew I was SAS that you dislike soldiers, well so do I, they are just an excuse for rich man to send other people fight battles they are to coward to fight themselves, and do things that should be unforgivable, those guys back there, they are my family, that's all I care fighting for now" He said and you were sure he was about to continue but you couldn't take it anymore and before he connected his brain with his mind you crashed your mouth on his.
He froze for a moment, and kept his eyes wide open for a second before responding the kiss and slowly opening his mouth to make you believe you had the control to immediately switch it and having you trapped by his expert tongue and his strong hands on your neck.
"What are you doing?" He asked after a couple more seconds, but you were sure he was asking himself.
"You lost someone, so did I, we are both sad, and tired, and this fucking place is getting on my nerves, don't overthink it, this doesn't have to mean anything" You said to him trying to sound seductive, he picked you up and made you sit on his lap with both legs on his hips as all response and continued kissing you.

Warner leads in this 1991 televised production of one of the most famous Anton Chekhov plays. Ivan Petrovich (Uncle Vanya for his niece Sonya) is a more then sad and angry man, who sacrificed dreams of love and intelectual success to administrate a cottage of wich provide money to his brother in law, an old professor called Serebryakov (Ian Bannen) that does nothing but look down upon him, all the while being favoured by Vanya’s own mother. Making matters worst, Vanya is one of the two man who is in love with the professors wife, Yelena (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). Two days of a family reunion mostly consisting of verbal fightings eventually makes all the tension that acumulates in Vanya’s mind eventually explode.
09º Konstantin Treplev (The Seagull, 1968)

The younger spiritual predecessour of Ivan Petrovich. Konstantin Treplev is an aspiring writer, who wishes to find a new style to talk about dreams, receiving praises from his mother (veteran actress Arkadina, played by Simone Signoret) and the love of the beautifull aspiring actress (Vanessa Redgrave). But the popularity of the best-selling writer Boris Trigorin (James Mason) and Konstantin’s problems to directly comunicate his feelings eventually make him fall down a tragic spiral of loneliness.
08º Bob Cratchit (A Christmas Carol, 1984)

Interestingly, when this 1984 adaptation of A Christmas Carol, Warner was first invited to play Jacob Marley. But he asked to play Bob Cratchit instead. And we all must be glad that he did, because he gives a very wholesome performance, that makes anyone wish to have him as a father figure.
07º Keith Jennings (The Omen, 1976)

In this aclaimed 1976 horror film, Warner’s character is a photographer, whose only job was to registrate the birthday party of the rich child of the american embassador (Gregory Peck) until a series of strange accidents start to kill people who knew that child or his relatives. Intrigued, Keith Jennings starts to investigate, and decides to form a duo with the american embassador, filling the role of the more proactive lancer to the mostly passive protagonist. One of David Warner’s most iconic good guy roles ever putt on the big screen.
06º Merlin (The Wizard, 2013 and The Once and Future King, 2014)

The two years in a row when David Warner played one of the most iconic wizrd mentor figures in mithology and pop culture. In 2013′s comedic short film The Wizard, Warner plays a Merlin that wakes up in modern times and is starting to adapt in a office work, while his colleagues try to adapt to his magic quirks. And in the BBC Radio 4 six episode drama The Once and Future King (adapted by Brian Sibley, the same guy who adapted the 1981 Lord of the Rings radio drama, from the novel series by T. H. White), where Merlin’s spirit sits alongside Arthur in the final battle for a conversation, we see how his Merlin could have acted in the past alongside King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, providing wise counsels with a bit of a snarky sense of humour and melancholy. Those works are two “must check out” for David Warner fans and for fantasy and arthurian mithology fans.
05º The Evil One (Time Bandits, 1981) and Ed Dilinger/Comander Sark/Master Control Program (Tron, 1982)

Yes, number five is a tye. Those two movies camed in a row, and in both David Warner played technology themed villains. In the first, Time Bandits, he is implied to be the Devil himself, and as such is portrayed as very powerfull and in control during most of the movie. In the second, Tron, Warner gives a triple performance: as the human Ed Dilinger and the program Comander Sark, he believes he is in control, but in reality is not. The real power is hold by Warner’s third character, the Master Control Program of the videogame. This transiction from a more simple one-and-all-powerfull antagonist to a more complex dinamic of a trio of antagonists was, for a lot of people, the introduction to Warner’s acting range, and for this reason it appears as a tye in this ranking.
04º The Doctor (Sympathy for The Devil, 2003 and Masters of War, 2008)

In the late 1970s, the BBC camed to search David Warner with an offer for him to play the Doctor in the main Doctor Who BBC Television series. He was interested, but unfortunally his filming schedule conflicted in working more them one season into a long-running TV Show, so he had to put the offer down. It was only in the 2000s, after the founding of the audio-drama company, that we would get a grasp of his portrayal of the Doctor, in the what-if scenarios provided by two episodes of Doctor Who Unbound: Sympathy for The Devil and Masters of War. In those audiodramas, he plays a alternate encarnation of the Third Doctor that is sent to Earth in 1997 instead of 1969, and thus could not help U.N.I.T with the Alien Invasions that happen in the 1970s. Thus, he finds a retired and pub-owning version of Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, and has to relearn to gain his thrust, until the two become companions of adventures that investigate new alie threads indepedently of U.N.I.T 
Warner’s Doctor is a bit less quirky encarnation of the character, having instead a more pratical temperment. He sees the danger, and he goes straight to investigate how to stop it, all the while trying to keep the people around him calm. And later he will make a comment about neading more conforting and fitting shoes. 
This is a Doctor that you would surely trust to keep your life safe. 
03º Lisander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1968)

A production that made a lot of millenials become Shakespeare fanboys, and they own this in part to David Warner’s performance as Lisander, one of the most romantic (if a bit bumbling) Shakespeare protagonists. Seeing the moments when he conforts and encourages his beloved Hérmia (Helen Mirren) and makes a mess of himself when he is enchanted to fall for Helena (Diana Rigg) is one of the most fun rides that an audience will ever get. Seriously, his Lisander was adorkable before the word ‘adorkable’ even existed.
02º Henry VI (The Wars of The Roses, 1965)

From a fun and very popular Shakespeare protagonist, to a heart-breaking and very underrated protagonist. For years i was one of several people who did not care for the Henry VI plays as it cared for its famous sequel, Richard III.
This all changed when i watched this 1965 televised production of the Wars of the Roses, that condenses the four plays in a way that makes it more accessible for audiences. Once again, this was helped in a big part by the performances of the cast.
David Warner was only 24 years old during this production, and had to cary the role of the vulnerable Henry VI from his youth to his old age and eventual murder by Richard III. 
And in my opinion, he carried it brilliantly. This was the sign that a very versatile actor would have a very long career.
And my number one David Warner role is...
01º Morgan Delt (Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment, 1966)

Henry VI stablished David Warner as a lead in theater and television. Now it was time to stablish him as the lead in film. And they did exactly that when casting him in the role of Morgan Delt, a painter who grew up mixing a familiar comunist education with an obsession with animals (particularly gorilaz) and is frustratred with his divorce of his socialite wife Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave), who is about to marry Jack Napier (Robert Stephens), art merchant and Morgan’s previous best friend. While trying every crazy squeam to take his wife back, Morgan must take on a journey to mature, so he can his wife go and be happy and he can recouver his career. But until this happens, transitioning from the sweet and romantic to the angry and scary, for Morgan, taking bombs home and wearing ridiculous gorila suits it is. 
For showing the range between scary villain and simpathetic hero that would be his trademark on years to come, and providing loud laughs mixed with an interesting commentary on masculine insecurity and entitlement, is that Morgan Delt is my favorite David Warner role.
