(Based off of this post! TFP Soundwave, IDW Sunstreaker, IDW First Aid, IDW Ravage, and IDW Cosmos have all been asked for! Feel free to send in an ask for any character that isn't one of these five 🌸❗️Not limited to followers or mutuals, so go wild!)

First Impression: Oh shit, First Aid! I read MTMTE before I read most of IDW, and I was fucking stoked to see him appear in the Delphi arc- ESPECIALLY with how he was introduced with his report that doubled as the issue's intro narration. Aside from that, though, I didn't focus on him much during my first read-through. Pharma and Ambulon immediately stole the show away from him, and it wasn't until my second read a few months later that I really focused on Aid. Aside from being happy to see him, I LOVED how he was drawn in MTMTE. He's always been cute, but something with how he was drawn in the first half of MTMTE really cemented for me that he has one of the best designs. He somehow manages to be boxy and round at the same time and I love him for it.

Impression Now: You are ENTIERLY responsible for how much First Aid means to me now, I hope you know this. One of my top ten IDW faves. His design remains one of my favorites, and I wish we got more canon content digging into his POV of things pre-mutiny. I wish he stayed on the Lost Light instead of being called away, too! There is so much focus on Ratchet passing over the title of CMO to First Aid, but then Aid leaves so quickly after. Idk, I wish we just got to see him more pre-mutiny. Aid is such a tragic character to me but he's another background tragedy and it makes me want to shake my screen a bit when I think about him. A somewhat vaguely odd thing to say, but I wish we got to see more of First Aid's grief over Ambulon and his feelings towards Pharma. Honestly I wished we got to see more interactions between Aid and the rest of the medical cast in general- including Ratchet, Velocity (ESPECIALLY Lotty (is not biased)), and Rung.

Favorite Moment: Speaking of Pharma, my favorite moment of First Aid is this one right here:

I think Aid should be shown like this more often. I NEED him to be angry. I need him to be murderous. As a treat for myself. I hate the idea in media where the good guys refuse to kill a villain because they'd be "letting the villain win". It's good to see that narrative challenged by Aid here.

... Even if the consequences aren't easily forgotten.

Idea for a Story: Someone put First Aid and Rung into a therapy appointment, I need to pick their interactions apart under a microscope. I do not thing going to Rung would be able to help Aid. In fact, it might just make an already shitty situation worse. But I want to see First Aid sit down and talk about what he is experiencing. And maybe I want to see Rung unintentionally making his grieving process more difficult. We already know from Rung's own admission in Lost Light that he does not know who he is without his patients. He banks his entire identity and self-worth on trying to assist other people. But what happens when nothing he does seems to help First Aid, and therefore his own self-image begins to crumble for it? How does his own perceived failings affect his treatment of First Aid?

Unpopular Opinion: 🤔 Not sure if I have one. I'm allergic to the idea of Aid being really nice and nervous 100% of the time, ig. All things considered, the First Aid we have in IDW isn't nervous at all. But I don't actually know how prevalent this is in fandom or if this is even an unpopular take 🤷‍♂️.

Favorite Relationship: Canon-wise? It's a toss up between him and Ambulon and then him and Ratchet. It is devastating how hard Aid takes Ambulon's death, and his desperation to help save Ambulon when Ratchet wouldn't let him was heartbreaking to read. At the same time, I NEED more of First Aid and Ratchet arguing with each other and Aid calling Ratchet out on his bullshit. It is rare that anyone steps up to Ratchet like that and succeeds in affecting him. I would like more, thanks.

Non-canon relationships? Another toss-up between Velocity and Ravage. Put these three in a blunt rotation, I'm sure they'll be fine.

Favorite Headcanon: First Aid is extremely tactile. There is not a word or phrase that could properly describe how touchy First Aid is. He has the capability to turn someone who is touch-starved to touched-out in the span of thirty minutes. While this is in part due to just him being an affectionate person in general (or at the very least, more physically affectionate than most other Autobots), it is also partially because of his intense focus on Autobot brands. He is so used to checking everyone he comes across for their brands in the case that they might have a bullet shot through them that the process of checking someone over is compulsive. This extends to people who fall outside of the Autobot ranks who do not even have brands, like Ravage, Cyclonus, and Ten. It's earned him more than a few strange looks and awkward silences over the course of being on the Lost Light.

7 and 8 for veth and/or essek?

7. For Veth, I like a lot of art of her as a halfling. I feel like people capture her style and her body type really well, and while this is outside the scope of this question I have a lot of complicated negative feelings about how fandom often headcanons in fully fanon representation to characters they don't actually care about, and so it's wonderful to have a canon fat character who is very happy with who she is and who people like for that.

For Essek, I think there's so much fanwork out there that it's possible to find something you like but I specifically like a lot of the meta about his motivations and his arc, and I like fic about his and Caleb's relationship that engages with it being a long-distance thing that won't be lifelong for Essek but will be significant.

8. For Veth: a bunch of things but notably, anyone who is like "I liked her better as a goblin" is boring and can fuck off; that is her core story. You do not like Veth if this is your opinion; you just want a goblin character to project onto. Also people who downplayed her relationship with Caleb. Many people who shipped Caleb with other party members (probably some people who shipped him with Essek too, but I saw this far more with those who shipped him with one of the tieflings) often attempted to downplay how much Veth meant to him. This keeps coming up, but if the core tenet of a ship involves low-key isolating the characters from any other meaningful relationships in your fanon conception of the show, it is a bad sign. Cody Christian was right and should be meaner to shippers.

For Essek: I cannot stand when fans constantly whine about him not appearing in materials or one-shots with the Nein. Yes, he is a member. He also did not appear until a third into the campaign and did not join them until very late in the campaign. He is on the run, in disguise. He is an NPC. The way he exists within the actual play story is fundamentally different. Also, he doesn't physically appear in Echoes of the Solstice but the plot hinges on him and others have written brilliantly about how screentime=/= importance. And I generally hate shrieking "HOW CAN I EXIST WITHOUT BLORBO/HOW CAN I WAIT FOR NEW EPISODES/WHEN WILL I GET NEWS OF SHOW" posts anyway and frequently block people who do them constantly and boy have I blocked no shortage of Essek fans for this specifically.

1. Canon I outright reject

Night Island is still around & it's still owned wholly by Armand and Daniel (though it's definitely been moved under the name of a corporate umbrella by now). Armand is far, far too sentimental to sell something that was so vitally important to him. I think he lies about it in his book for two reasons: 1. He was still wounded and lashing out at Daniel, and he knew saying he'd sold most of the island would hurt him, and 2. After QotD was published, a flood of tourists "looking" for Lestat came to the island (same as we VC fans go to New Orleans and "look" for them... we know they're not real, but...) and Armand did not like that one bit.

I also think the name was changed and it's probably open 24 hours now with a brand spanking new resort hotel circa 1999 or whatever, but it's still theirs and they still call it Night Island. And they still use the Villa regularly, and try to get Lestat and Marius to agree to host some Coven events there, too.

3. Obscure headcanon

I believe Daniel and Armand were together until 1993 or 1994, and were traveling around trying to reconnect and rekindle their relationship when they finally had the fight that split them up "for good" pre-MtD. Granted, I think for Armand it was Daniel leaving him "for good." I think for Daniel it was more "I need to take a break and clear my head, I'm going to take a time out." But they are terrible at communicating, especially when they're fighting, so... we all know how that went.

For a more fun--"fun"-- obscure headcanon, here is the worst thing I think Armand ever did in the name of weird science according to Daniel (tw: animal cruelty): he read about Edison electrocuting that poor elephant and got really interested in how that electrocution worked. So he got a fish bowl and experimented with fish. Then one night, Daniel finds the bathtub full of dead rats with a toaster in it, plugged into the wall. They definitely fought about it, and they definitely moved out of that apartment that night. It might one of the only times Armand truly skeeved him out, worse even than the rats in the microwave. He also didn't take baths for a good six months after.

Okay, sorry sorry, but that has been in my head for a while.

8. Unpopular opinion about them

I'm so bad at these because tbh I never know what "the popular" opinions are.

I guess I will say, I don't think Armand ever regretted turning Daniel and was, in fact, happy with how he turned out. We only get little glimpses into his thoughts on the matter in QotD, but he seems pretty enamored with Daniel as a vampire. For all his fears that Daniel might come to resent him for it, or no longer want/need him, he does seem pleased with the result. (Is this unpopular? I honestly do not know.)

I also don't think Daniel was a mess of a vampire or a bad fledgling. I think he experienced being a newbie vampire with an extreme intensity that made him quicker to laugh or more prone to staring at the patterns in the wallpaper, but I don't think that's particularly abnormal for a new vampire, either. I also think Daniel was especially elated to finally get the Blood - it meant not only would he not die a mortal death, but it was proof positive that Armand truly loved him as he always believed and wanted to spend eternity with him. He was riding a hell of a high, but I don't think he was mad, or out of his head, or a problem fledgling in any way.

I also firmly believe they had some solidly good years together in that time, and even though there were fights and arguments (and Armand's fears that he tried to manifest as self-fulfilling prophecy), they did actually have plenty of fun together until they split.

Again, I have no idea how "unpopular" any of that is.

Sephiroth, 1, 5, 8, 16, 23, 26 (Angeal) please

This is really long but I hope you enjoy! 26 got a bit out of hand lol. 16, 23, and 26 under the cut.

(1) Honestly, I don’t think there’s really any canon I know with Sephiroth i outright reject. I do wholeheartedly support and believe the “Vincent is Sephiroth’s dad” theory but I accept that as of now, Hojo is his father. Even though it’s just Hojo saying that but oh well. There is also the og game guide listing him as 6’1” and i would dispute that but i think it’s been changed now to like ~6’6”. If not, he is 6’6” in my heart.

(5)His best personality trait i would say is his loyalty. Maybe not best, but that is definitely his strongest personality trait. Not taking missions that would involve killing his friends that defected, desperately trying to reach out to Genesis when he left, and so on. It’s to his detriment he is so loyal to Angeal, Genesis, and Shinra. They all betray that loyalty in some way from his perspective. Genesis and Angeal left, Angeal died, Genesis said he was an alien monster, and Shinra was lying to him his entire life about basically everything. And we all know the results of all that.

(8) He is a bottom. I will live and die on this hill. Not sure if its an unpopular opinion necessarily, but i don’t really see him written or drawn as such that often sooo

(16) He has a lot of really dark secrets he won’t admit to others or himself. One of those is that after he was told his mother died in childbirth, the nagging thought and feeling that it was HIS fault began to creep up in the back of his mind. He would never tell someone this because it would be like speaking it into being. Into reality. So he pushes that thought deep down. But it’s still there slowly eating at him.

(23)Probably rose, vanilla, leather, and some other flowers and/or citrus smells. And campfire smoke or woody scent cause i think that fits. This would probably fit more as a perfume but meh :/

(26) If Sephiroth was stuck in an elevator with Angeal, I don’t see much happening since they’re friends and both relatively chill. It’s not like with Genesis where they are constantly poking and goading each other; Genesis trying to get a rise out of Sephiroth and break his cold, stoic demeanor. Being stuck in a closed space with Angeal for some odd amount of time would be fine! That is, until that time ticks on to 30 minutes to an hour to two hours. They have work they need to be doing. Sephiroth has briefings to get to and a mountain of paperwork to get done. Angeal has drills to run with Zack and briefings for both of them. They’re both silently getting more worried and more stressed as the elevator does not move or open. Conversation died a while ago at this point since the both of them aren’t the most talkative or extroverted. That’s Genesis’s specialty. Now Sephiroth is brooding in one part of the small space, trying to get what work he can get done finished or started on his PHS and Angeal is doing the same plus almost anxious check ins with Zack to give his student something to do thrown in. Sooner or later, no more emails related to work can be answered or sent. It’s just anxious, awkward silence again. Sephiroth’s silent, almost imperceptible anxiety that only someone who knew him well would notice spurs something in Angeal to try and get a different, non work related conversation going. It’s almost the same father-like care he shows Zack in his voice. He had been noticing that Sephiroth had been getting thin again, so he brings it up gently. All he gets is a deflective “Hmph.” But he keeps talking, not unlike his lectures about dreams and honor; but definitely more quiet and caring. Angeal knows it’s because Sephiroth is stressed or binging research, neglecting himself in the process. Just before the elevator starts moving again, Angeal invites Sephiroth to dinner that evening and thankfully, he agrees.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire? I think, of the relationships Palpatine has, the only one that doesn't leave me with a case of the icks, is possibly the one he has with Obi-Wan, where he just absolutely H A T E S that guy because he's keeping Anakin pretty emotionally stable despite Palpatine's best interests and also, no matter what Palpatine throws at him, that bastard just WILL NOT DIE. It's infuriating, he wants Obi-Wan Kenobi dead so badly, he calls Commander Cody SPECIFICALLY, delivers a personalized message to him during Order 66, he wants to make EXTRA SURE that asshole is dead, and IT STILL DOESN'T WORK. He probably also had to hear ENDLESSLY from Dooku and Maul and Grievous about how he's the best/worst, just Obi-Wan Kenobi this and Obi-Wan Kenobi that, and then he got Vader and oh my GOD Vader NEVER SHUT UP about Obi-Wan, why can't Sheev escaping hearing about this guy!!!! WHY DO YOU ALL LIKE HIM SO MUCH!?!? I JUST WANT HIM DEAD!!! 9. Could you be roommates with this character? Absolutely not lmao. 10. Could you be best friends with this character? Again, absolutely not, as much fun as he is to watch as a villain living the best day of his life, he's a horrible person who does monstrous things, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near him irl, much less friends with him.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character? I like Palpatine because he's a genuinely effective villain and illustrates a lot about our own political system, in that I can believe he'd do numbers in our real world. Even when swathes of people are like, that guy isn't actually doing what he says, there are still a lot of people taken in by the kind grandfatherly act, and that's extremely fascinating as a story element, that the Republic was destroyed through politics rather than an invading force or whatever. Because politics matter. Because leaders matter. Because the galactic public had to get its shit together and hold their leaders accountable and they chose the fears that he stirred up in them over not becoming a dictatorship. Palpatine is an effective leader because he engineered a genuinely near impossible to win scenario--the Separatists were not a noble cause, they were committing atrocity after atrocity, they were backed by the Trade Federation and the Sith, people knew what they were going to do to innocent lives, and then lo and behold, the Separatists started carpet bombing civilian targets, releasing biochemical warfare into civilian populations, partnering up with a slave empire that stole entire colonies to force them into slavery, they had to be stopped. Yet it was through that fight that the Republic fell further into the fear and paranoia until they were ready to let Palpatine do WHATEVER he wanted in the name of "safety". AND THAT IS A GENUINELY BALLER SET-UP FOR A VILLAIN. 14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character. Steph likes cute, trendy, pop, adorable clothes, like this outfit is SO CUTE on her:

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

How he always seems to seek the peaceful option first. He was against burning the ships, tried to treat with Morgoth (even though he undoubtedly knew it was a trap because how could you not know), tried to rescue Elured and Elurin, and sent a letter entreating Elwing prior to the sacking of Sirion. And depending on which text you're reading, the attack on Doriath was mostly at Celegorm's urging, and the sack of Sirion was mostly at the urging of the Ambarussa. So... I just find that to be very critical to my understanding of him as a character. I think it's so interesting!!

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I guess the lack of nuance? I rarely see takes that both acknowledge that there seems to be some good in him while also taking into account that he very much did murder a lot of people. It seems to be always "woobie babie who has done no wrong" or "evil evil bad boy" and I don't like either of those options and find them very uninteresting. Especially when it comes to the adoption of Elros and Elrond.

I've been seeing more and more nuance lately. Though I don't know if that's simply down to my own curation of my dashboard or if that's a general shift in the fandom. Either way, I'm happy.
