Episode 4
TW: Rape, Sexual Assault and Abuse, Physical abuse.
Tumblr media
So uh, I really did just guess "there is no way it's that bad, right?"...
OK, SO LET'S TALK. So again if you haven't seen the episode big Trigger Warning for its content! It's real heavy, explicit and on your face. I'm a Sexual abuse victim talking about this, just so you know.
I think the bigger problem I have with the episode, it's the context surrounding it and what happens later on, specially. Many people can have different views on the poison scene itself, for their own. But that scene, even if you as a victim relate, can only really work in a vacuum. Why? Let's see... hum.... The jokes of male SA in Helluva Boss? How it's written as funny to Moxxie to get assaulted? By the Succubus, Blitz, Chaz? Not seeing any problem in Stolitz, and victim blaming Blitz.
Suddenly Viv wants to be like: "Male sexual assault and abuse it's so not talked about, I'm going to write about it". As if she didn't write all those HB jokes. All those jokes are only men getting assaulted too, by other men or woman. The SA and r-pe it's funny when it's done to men, why did this even happen?
Tumblr media
Even if the entire episode 4 was good, why did the same person write all this jokes? Is the sexual harassment Angel does to husk, even going to be addressed later or...? The biggest problem, it's the bad execution. Something happens a lot with HB and HH, it's that scenes and concepts work In isolation, that way you imagine in infinite possibilities of the "what if this". But they give you is in it'self not that good. The series does expect you to be a fan, and have to watch the pilot. Because it doesn't really bother to introduce the characters or anything. So the emotional bits don't hit that hard if you didn't already care about the characters since or before the pilot.
Since the first episodes, Valentino has being changing between fucking idiot and horrifying monster. In episode 2 he is treated as a stupid dumbass. I feel like all the episodes until 4 were too much, on the comedy shit- to immediately jump into explicit abuse and SA is a lot. In the end of the episode they also shift back the tone, weirdly.
So we jump into Val and Angel's work, showing how shitty val is. Charlie jumps into interrupting the hole thing. AND VAL ASSAULTS HER TOO??? I didn't expect that. He grabs her kisses and lick up her arm, and gets too close to her in other scenes. Then Charlie accidentally ruins the set, and Val ends up physically abusing Angel. Living him with a black eye, and it's shown Angel did a deal with him. Leaving him fully trapped with him (not a legal contract, but a devil/sinner bound magic thing). Then it's poison music number.
Many people feel like it's too graphic. Other people will say it's okey, because it shows the problem straight on, and it's supposed to make you uncomfortable.
Explicit doesn't = good.
You can talk a lot of what does this level of graphic/explicit add to the conversation.
My main problem with it being so explicit comes from who is directing that hole part of the episode. I talked about it in the post above. The person in question:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(BLURRED CUT PICTURE)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does this scene above seem familiar to you? This person put together with how the poison part of the episode is played out AND all the disgusting "SA is funny" jokes HB make this a fucking problem.
AND THEN THE FUCKING ENDING IS CRAZY BAD LIKE HELLO???? At the end, Angel is at a bar, and his drink gets spiked. Husk gets him out and fights against the guys that spiked the drink. Then they kindly have an argument... To get through the whole heavy ass episode- to then Husk hit with a song calling Angel a baby IS FUCKING CRAZY. I see what the point was supposed to be, but the execution absolutely kills it. The song tries to compare Husk and Angel, to say shit sucks but hey it's okay we are in this together, BUT HOLY SHIT. Why, comparing Angel Dust being sexually abused under a demonic contract (HE IS STILL UNDER)- to Husk having to work for Alastor. Yes, Husk fucked up his life in hell do to gambling- that's not comparable to Angel being in an abusive relationship where he gets taken advantaged of. Calling Angel dust a baby loser, "everyone got it difficult get over your self"- it's fucking crazy. The fact that the episode ends on everyone happy and laugh it off it awful! WHAT HAPPEN???????? Like Angel is still under Val's contract- his going to have to go back to work, or to any other place where his drink could be spiked. We are still in the same problem. I don't- I don't understand. The song wasn't even a "I'll help you", it felt more like "Hey shit sucks, get over it". How did you write that? I don't think the series has the time or good enough space to treat the subjects- and they are dealing in the worst way.
Tumblr media
EDIT:
I cannot believe this woman made a cum joke, about the song that it's about being trapped with your abuser- that comes with really graphic scenes of assault and r-pe. Like the whole song it's about that???? It's not a "Hot sexy" song, it's literally all sexual assault and workplace abuse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is from a non canon comic from the same artist above, got immediately referenced in the scene after poison. That's crazy. Also, The artist is... uh......... Did you know that in episode 4. It got showed that Angel's real name is Anthony? They changed their name to Tony, make themselves look like Angel? Now does sex work like Angel. They choreographed the pole dancing in Addict?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND Viv just reduced Angel's Sexual Harassment of Husk as:
Tumblr media
Angel trows himself to Husk, grabs him, touches him, makes unwanted sexual comments. You, have never left the weird shipping of queer of mean that revolts around sexual harassment. It's like old ass garbage Wattpad yaoi, not acknowledging those problems. Why is there more attention to that than Charlie and Vaggie, who lacks so much personality and everything. WLW with no condiments and artificial as fuck MLM with microplastics.

Un-horny BG2 mods
Ok, so I often hear that BG2 mods are very horny--not denying that, but here are some horny-free BG2 mods that I enjoy. I'm only including Quest and NPC mods here. I'm also only including mods that I have entirely played through myself.
The White Queen, by Lava: a quest mod that allows player to visit brand new place - Silent Swamps - where something happened some time ago. Curious? Let yourself discover what lies under the layers of the mud, meet the White Queen and her servants. Also, the music is bangin'
I Shall Never Forget, by Lava: This Baldur's Gate 2 mod allows you to work with Orion - a mage who has lost the sense of his life. Either help him regain what he lost or let him die without the faintest ray of hope.
Southern Edge, by Lava: Southern Edge is a new district for Athkatla available from the very start, once you talk to Gaelan and hear his offer. You can get a Book of Intelligence as a reward for one of the quests, and there's a scribe who will buy your unneeded quest documents (like The Tome of Amaunator, the Noontime Ritual, the Book of Kaza, etc. It's a nice lore-friendly way to get rid of some items)
Ooze's Lounge, by Lava: The mod introduces a brand new part of Athkatlan sewers. You may now use the originally inactive grate in Slums to enter a locked part of the sewers and discover its dark corners. The mod offers three new areas as well as a couple of mini-quests, new items and graphics.
Yoshimo Romance, by Lava: Mod includes 16 timered talks with Yoshimo (pre-Brynnlaw) plus those fired by circumstances - including talk in Brynnlaw and at entrance of Spellhold. Those who love reading may also install additional portion of text - dialogues for both male and female players fired by in-game events. There's no horniness here; the most you can do is kiss his cheek once, IIRC
Everything else, by Lava: seriously, all of his mods are great, and none of the ones on his site are horny
Trials of the Luremaster, by Argent77: This mod makes the Icewind Dale expansion "Trials of the Luremaster" available to BG2:EE (v2.0 or later), Siege of Dragonspear and EET (Enhanced Edition Trilogy).
✨Adrian✨, by Rhealla: Adrian has lived an interesting life, for lack of a better term, though he's hoping to finally put his past behind him. Aside from his magic, he has a background in espionage and a decadent -- some might say romantic -- streak that has gotten him into trouble in the past. He once pursued (and ultimately wrecked) a political career with one of the most notorious organizations in the Realms, and may very much enjoy the opportunities for intrigue the Shadow Thieves have to offer... if you can drag him away from fighting with the Harper and the Red Wizard long enough to notice, that is. Don't let his alignment scare you off. He's the least evil Evil character in the game, and his alignment can seamlessly shift to LN. He does fine in my good-aligned playthroughs. His romance isn't particularly horny--he offers once, but you can turn him down just fine (and there are multiple ways to tell him no). He's by far my favorite romance and favorite NPC in the game; I am not normal about him at all; and I could probably write an entire essay about his character arc. Please do try him out
Sir Ajantis by jastey: With this modification Ajantis can be acquired as a member of the PC's group after the fight in the Windspear Hills (which was not changed by the mod principally). The player must first solve a quest to free Ajantis from Firkraag's ransom. You have the option to continue his romance from BG1 or start a new romance with him--I've done the new romance route, and I didn't notice any horniness.

today's disconnected but related Thoughts are about how stories should exist within "containers", and how problems in long-running TV series are typically introduced when the writers don't use those containers properly. I'm struggling to articulate it in a coherent order, but:
● an audience needs to be able to see some kind of boundary enclosing the story, otherwise it doesn't feel satisfying. This is why we have set plot structures like Freytag's Pyramid and Fichtean Curve which so many stories follow. Most storytelling formats lend themselves to this – novels, certain comic books and graphic novels, plays, and films all have a beginning and an end. You open the book or enter a theatre or switch on the telly, and you experience the story, and then it ends. The story might live with you afterwards, if it affected or resonated with you or made you want to analyse it, but if the creator did their job well you'll at least feel closure with it on a mechanical level (i.e., plot and character arcs have conclusions that you can see fit within the framework of the story, even if personally you didn't like or agree with something). The Good Place is an example of a TV series that did this very well, because the writers had a set vision for the series and they executed it.
● A lot of TV dramas and serials operate on the premise of being ongoing – a story that stretches on without any defined end in sight. This can be done well, but sometimes the story gets bloated and stale, or it ends up like separate swatches of cloth instead of an interwoven tapestry. I'm not saying this means every TV series automatically fails to tell a story in a satisfying way, or even that the series that don't are inherently bad. It works differently from books or films, and therein lie its strengths as a storytelling medium! For one thing, TV is excellent for character-focused stories, and these can go on and on for ages and still be enjoyable and entertaining (even if not "good" by critical artistic standards). There's also more flexibility in TV than in a film; the ongoing format lets writers string out rising and falling tension, and focus in and out on different plots/subplots across a far larger scope.
● The way these shows work is the overarching medium of the series contains smaller stories in the form of plots. The boundaries between one plot and the next usually need to be permeable, too – a plot arc should conclude satisfactorily, yes, but the things that happen in it ought to resonate with the larger narrative afterwards, otherwise it'll feel pointless to the audience. Ghost Whisperer is an example where the creators failed to do this, repeatedly: each of the five seasons introduces a new concept which seems to be building towards some kind of climax, and then... doesn't. Characters vanish from the story never to be mentioned again. Huge events that ought to have life-altering consequences for the characters only have consequences for a few episodes, and then it's swept under the rug. The series had its appeal in a fun concept and lovable characters, but was let down by the execution. By contrast, medical drama Grey's Anatomy has been going successfully since 2005. It has some continuity issues (like interns vanishing without explanation) and some plots are better than others, but on the whole it takes its status as a long-running story seriously and does it quite well.
● The streaming model and the way TV writers are treated is a factor, too. Even where the boundaries of a story have been pre-defined and could be executed well, the creators often don't have the chance. (and I'm sure the same is true of long-running manga/comic books/graphic novels, although I'm focusing mostly on TV here). Ratings, network politics and actors' personal lives/ambitions have a huge impact on what happens to a TV series, and the popularity or apparent success of a series doesn't always guarantee its continuation. Just look at Netflix's habit of axing series after 2 seasons! Or at Good Omens, which despite being written by Neil Gaiman, having a huge fanbase, and a pre-set story which would be concluded in three seasons, hasn't yet been officially greenlit for season 3 (afaik). The industry has created an environment where stories are commodified, and that's not an environment in which stories can flourish.

WHY ILLUMINATION SHOULD Turn The Sing movies into a series (episodes) or a graphic novel series
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Sorry if it's to long I just need to write what I think)
I love the sing movies as much as the next person, its probably one of illuminations best franchises. As much as I lobe the movies and the main characters, I wish they would explain their backstories before meeting buster, And with the third one in development, I'm hoping they do just that. But what if they don't. Well that's what I keep asking myself, how they could show the audience the characters stories or their lives, after and before. Well I've come up with an idea on that. I have 2 possibilities a series (episodes) or a graphic novel series.
Here let me explain what they could do and why.
A series (episodes):
If the writers don't have time to make movies for sing, they can(could) make a series to show what the characters are doing and their development or introduce new characters in the story. And also talk about their life and things that have happened during the movies. It could also have side stories or parts 1 or 2 episodes to see what each character and storyline is doing, and also help character traits be developed in a character, see what their relationship with each other is like, and even help bring in new songs to the show and have each character show their skills. And most importantly answer questions each movie leaves about, and explain things that happened before.
Graphic novels:
We can learn about the characters and their backstories and new characters that might not be mentioned in the movies (or series) And they can address serious topics like death of a loved one more seriously and it can mainly focus on one character and their past and how it happened. And most importantly it would save illumination a lot of time and keep people from asking or waiting for something to happen. And if the characters have a dark backstory, and the people at home don't have to complain that anything risky is put it on theaters or TV and get complaints about it on what their viewers are watching. And ok it's not like animation studios haven't done anything like that. I mean look at Disney & pixar, they've done things parents might not agree with, or things that might scare kids, or done things that people should discuss or things that shouldn't be hard to tell kids and DreamWorks has been doing those things for years it wouldn't surprise me if Illumination did that to. Not that I have a problem with it, I'm glad that animation movie studios are having characters be or talk about things that make them feel real, like family drama, discrimination, Sexuality, mental health, depression, trauma, etc. And like most animation Companies who have not recently but not too long ago have Done these things to give "life" and personality to the characters, but because of the backlash and criticism that that many entertainment studios have gotten, (like Disney and pixar) studios have taken less risks and been struggling with either doing what critic's want and certain audiences want, or doing risks and doing what another certain audience wants or the other way, and if Illumination is worried about taking a risk of any of those things I mentioned, and are afraid that a franchise will be be ruined or canceled because of it, they should make a graphic novel series to explain things or to continue it. There are so many things I would like to say about entertainment studios and criticism and backlash they could get, or the unfair criticism their movies can get, but I'll save that for another post.
Anyway That's my opinion, but what's yours? Answer in the poll and if you have your reasons or opinions comment on what you think, If you don't let my opinion that's okay.
And when the votes have been done, I'll explain more about it.

Hey everyone! Feel Less will be going on a short hiatus... but we're not going anywhere!
Allow me to explain~
So, I gave a similar explanation last time, but because I'll be introducing some new characters, I need some time to finish all the art. I thought I could do it last week, but the extra week I took only allowed me enough time to finish Anna's sprites and cutscene graphics from the latest update, which I hope you enjoyed~ but I have to be honest with myself, and admit that in order to finish everything I want I need to take way longer than just 1 extra week.
You see, things in Feel Less are about to get fuuuuuuuuuucked up real interesting! [REDACTED] isn't the only character that's getting introduced you know~ The Some Things Are Better Left Unknown story route includes at least 3 other characters that could potentially join the party! And they're not gonna draw themselves lmao. Besides the new characters, there's also some very important story beats that are coming, which will also require original art. I could of course do everything with the sprites and backgrounds, but that'd be sacrificing some of the quality of the comic, and I don't want the story to suffer just to get it out on a self-imposed deadline, you know? This is not to mention the backgrounds needed for the new locations so... yikes! This is definitely gonna take longer than a week! Especially because I have a job besides posting comics online (sadly, I wish I could just do this full time aslkdmakldmml 😭)
Another important thing to note is that we'll be disabling player interaction for a bit, at least until all the important story points have been covered, which I think should be the next 3 updates.
Now, what do I mean by "we're not going anywhere"? Well, because this blog won't be going radio silent until everything's done, like I used to do in the past! I'll be streaming most of my art process on my twitch channel! I usually play games on there, but I'm going on an Art Stream Marathon until all the art for Feel Less has been completed! (I really, really want to prioritize this. Neon White can wait.) For those of you who don't know, I stream every Thursday and Saturday from 2:30 pm EST, to around 5:30pm. I'll be posting links to the streams on this blog every day I do them, so come say hi! 💖 There will be slight spoilers for character designs, but not plot points, so dw~
I want to close by saying that, to be completely honest, I never enjoy putting my works on hiatus. Keeping momentum going on a webcomic is difficult, but I have to make sure Feel Less is 100% something I can be proud of and not a rushed product. There's some cool stuff coming, and I want it to have the impact it deserves.
As always, thank you all so much for your support! The fact that you guys take the time to read my webcomic makes me so happy~~ 🥰 Also, important to mention that while the story's on hiatus the inbox will be wide open! So feel free to send questions and stuff, I'll still be here~ See you all soon!!!

persona enjoyer alert!!!! i’m so glad to hear that someone i already follow is also into it. i haven’t played p3 yet so this is my first go of it but i’m really enjoying it so far. what’s this game like from the perspective of someone who played one of the other versions?
HIIIII god i'm so excited for you...imagine getting to play p3 for the first time...<333
i'm so glad you're enjoying it thus far...!!! 🥰 it's my beloved game. WELL all of my thoughts on Reload are obviously extremely skewed due to my pure attachment to this game's story and characters, so i can't give a very "objective" comment on... anything... but i'm not finishing this replay of p5 any time soon to put it that wayDBHFJKM
basically what it's like is., its everything to me. heart
i'm nowhere near done with P3R yet obviously (i keep putting it down to rest my wrists or draw stuff hahsahbd) but so far it's been such a treat for me. i'm very happy 🥺
to ME, persona 3 is (and will probably always be) The Peak... nd the remaster is running more or less the same script (i think it's based on p3p's script??? i forgor 💀) just with, yknow, new graphics and voicework and stuff. so it's hard to really complain about it when it's more or less been "persona 3 running on the persona 5 engine" 😭
like that sure is My Game! with extra Unreal Engine Motion Blur (<- LOL)
it's hitting all the beats in the order it should what more can i ask for. the music has been remixed a bit (as always huh) but it's still recognizably homey to me. like even if i keep getting thrown off by changes like "new lotus juice verse about going to bed early" (Iwatodai Dorm) i'm still just vibing along lmao. i cheered out loud when i heard Deep Breath Deep Breath
SO FAR my "complaints" have been pure, yknow, "unreasonable superfan nitpicking", so they aren't actually worthy of being called reasonable critique. it's all shit like "they rearranged the order of shots when remaking this cutscene, and the original sequence was stronger...TO ME"
STUFF THAT NO NEW PLAYER WOULD BE THINKING ABOUT...
and of course neutered Tactics is a no-no. i'm gonna be huffy about that forever but c'est la vie, it's what the franchise has settled on... but as a Certified P3 Tactics Gamer i'm basically obligated to be a lil miffed about this Post-Tactics World we live in. and like cmon man you introduced baton pass but my AI teammates can't even see it...even though the "recommended move" scan logic CAN....!!!
^^^ but this one is ALSO at its core a complaint that new players won't have comparison context for (because the Tactics in P3R is not the Tactics we once had). and . also many newbies will never even rub up against it if they prefer Direct Command to begin with (which lots of people do) so like. who cares . it doesn't ruin the game for me i just dearly miss the Epic Highs And Lows Of P3 Tactics HAHBDS
on the upside, adding more content for party members who didn't have SLinks in the original is Very Good. i'm really very much enjoying those new scenes and it's needed badly. sweet treats for diesel...❤ AND TARTARUS LOOKS SO GOOD HOUAHHH
AND that UI...so shiny.... ough... no i lovie. i really do
like at the end of the day i admittedly could never love P4, and while i did really enjoy P5 (and P5R) it was always "but it's no P3". so asking me for my thoughts on P3R is mostly incoherent nodding and pointing bc its very much My Game reincarnated. i'm glad all my friends have an easier way to play it all gussied up and shiny now so i can finally foist my old rpg upon them... 🥰
peace and love on tatsumi port island.

Famitsu has an interview with the Enstars staff members who came up with the idea of Ensemble Training and it has a lot of fun information. Here are some things from the interview summarized:
It was an idea from the lead illustrator and graphic designer who at first talked about a dietary app featuring Knights but it later changed to exercise because they felt diet app was too complex and not easy to add a concept of working together to be more healthy to. The lead illustrator made a proposal of it and found other staff members who were interested in helping her. At some point there was also talk of adding some romancing aspect into the game but that was discarded. (Phew!!)
They talked about it in late 2020 but the work began in March 2022. Originally they wanted to release it with Butou-kai shuffle but it was not ready yet at that point. It also wasn't originally meant as April Fool's content but then they thought it'd get a lot of attention that way. And they were right! They got more downloads than they anticipated when the app launched.
Also, it was kept approachable to everyone not only by keeping it completely free (and it'll stay without any paid content they promised) but also making sure everyone could do the exercises. The staff members who came up with the idea aren't athletic, so they tested the exercises could be done by non-trained people. They had both a professional gym trainer and Enstars staff who did muscle training to help with planning the exercises and programmes.
And lolol, the reason the day in-app changes at 4 am is because many staff members are nightowls so daily reset at 12 midnight felt too tough. Haha, I feel you. (But wait, does that mean some of them are exercising in the middle of the night??)
They had been thinking it's boring and hard to stay motivated to do exercises if you just watch videos or have to go somewhere to exercise. And that you want to be praised and encouraged. So they wrote idols giving you a lot of positive feedback. And that's why for example Izumi who's usually quite rude, sounds kinder in the app. They wanted them to tell you you're doing a good job and give you little cheers during exercises (so no demon instructor Yuzuru dlc, sorry everyone). They also wrote the characters as they would be acting in interviews or promotional settings, so even those who do not normally speak very politely, are using more keigo. Kanata got specially edited lines because he talks so slow haha.
It's so true the idols telling you good job and to keep up helps. <3
Also, they thought that maybe the voice actors would be a little bit confused about suddenly asked to be gym instructors, so they filmed an example video for the VAs to explain/show it since the game animation was still in progress. Awww!
The characters got more lines and animations than they originally planned. At first there was no instructors introducing themselves before exercises but as they created animations and lines for the four trainers (Ibara, Adonis, Izumi and Mitsuru), they thought it'd be fun to see the other characters animated and talking more too. Originally there would've just been the chibi character screen. I'm glad they decided to expand it! They were first warned that they can't have too many special animations but in the end they included all they asked for (for example Ibara's salute). And they put a lot of care into Wataru's ponytail animation!! <3
Such a passion project. I'm glad HappyEle supported their idea and let them make it into a real app. I'm again thinking that HappyEle/Cacalia CEO interview where he said he's letting the employees do what they love and want to do.

Lore Dump: Regarding the Supernatural
Note: This is gonna be a bit of a short one as it's more of a clarification for people who have Muses that are tied to the supernatural.
So, let me just get this out of the way and say that yes, there are elements of the supernatural present within the original SR games (although more so the first two, and that expansion I don't even consider canon). And while they aren't exactly anything that substantial, I've always seen that as an invitation to explore the concept further. Cause really, how the hell do you not love the idea of mashing organized crime and stuff that's far beyond the realm of comprehension together? It's definitely had a hold of me ever since a particular boss fight in the second game, but that's something I'll get to in a second.
Anyway, let me just lay it out like this; in the first SR, after the death of an important character (no spoilers on the off chance one of you actually wants to check out the series), you are given the chance to call up a number you might have seen around the map for a business known as Eye for an Eye. They are run by voodoo practitioners who can revive the aforementioned character, and have them come back as a zombie homie. This can also be done in the second game after the death of another major character.
Now, in addition to Eye for an Eye, we have a character introduced in SR2 who goes by the name of Mr. Sunshine. He is the second-in-command of the Sons of Samedi, a Haitian drug cartel led by a man who goes by the moniker of The General. Mr. Sunshine is important to our discussion because he is the first instance of The Boss encountering someone tied to the supernatural in the main plot, and not have it be just some silly little easter egg.
This is mainly shown during the fight you have with him (the mission is fairly graphic by the end), where Mr. Sunshine pulls out a voodoo doll that's able to both knock The Boss around, and keep himself invincible until the doll is shot out of his hands. Yet even on the brink of death, Mr. Sunshine is seemingly capable of reviving himself over and over again, right until The Boss decides to just decapitate him.
With all that said, you're probably wondering just what in the hell does any of that mean. Well, I think it's pretty simple; if the game is going to go out of its way to depict something as abnormal and clearly supernatural as that was, in a main mission no less, then what does that tell you about the rest of the world? What else might be lurking around that people might not be fully aware of? And yeah, I know it's kinda silly to go that buckwild over tiny little hints of shit being a little weird in this universe. But like hell am I keep myself or anyone else from taking the opportunity to explore that further.
And let me be clear, I'm not looking to do anything totally out there. There is a way to depict something regarding magic, the supernatural, and anything else that may fall under that category in a way that's both very interesting, and acknowledges that in a modern setting such as this, it's not commonplace. So I would absolutely love to do that with y'all. I love those kinds of settings, I love throwing Django into these situations where he has to deal with things that are soooo out of his league. It's a lot of fun! And I hope you can see that vision as well.

To piggyback on your uncomfortableness about Lenore's design, I think the real skeevy part of the sex scenes is how Alucard and Hector are described
Hector gets constantly compared to a child (or a puppy...), we are constantly reminded that he never grew up, and his wide eyed naiveté is his main character trait
Alucard is, on text, a teenager in a grown man's body due to his dhampir nature, which I suppose explains why he's so surly and bitchy
The two manchildren, and only them, get graphic sex scenes where they are deceived due to their innocent/good nature
If they were women, I am positive they'd be called "minor coded" and the whole scene being accused of covert pedophilia or something like that. In any case, it's just... gross on so many levels. Those two characters were done so unspeakably dirty
(i really let 3+ weeks go by without answering this huh. okay.)
yeah, there's nothing here i don't already agree with. mmmmmaybe if you really want to swear up and down these two characters are supposed to be quite literal manchildren then. definitely don't involve them in weird graphic sex scenes that both turn into rape by deception...?
but also on the other side of this, it's frustrating, now that i notice it, that the show itself really tries to tell us they're manchildren but doesn't seem interested in actually following through by showing us any of this. it even gets pretty contradictory at times imo this is a bit of a tangent tbh but i feel like it's another criticism worth addressing because it just...bugs me that there's this consistent pattern of decisions being made carelessly and it's a net negative no matter how you look at it, which i'll explain in a bit:
so especially in Hector's case, the manchild angle always came off as kinda weird to me - like first off, he's introduced to us as killing his own parents as a child. wouldn't that lend itself better to a narrative that he had to grow up too fast, his innocence clearly lost at such a young age?
i'm pretty surprised, having re-watched S2, that he comes across as more competent than Isaac, the way he actually attempts to strategize and come up with a plan of attack, while Isaac is mostly just coddling Drac and moping and scowling in the background. (most of Hector's S2E2 lines are just him arguing with the council and trying to push some kind of resolution forward) and hey, Drac is even interested at Hector's objections to the one time Isaac brings up a plan! so... why do they then spend the next episode dunking on him being a "manchild"? at this point, Hector has actually done more for the war effort. that doesn't really sound like being a manchild to me? sure, all his objections are tinged with his principles of ensuring there's as little needless suffering as possible, but that's hardly an immature stance to take. and how is it even Hector's fault that Drac lied to him, he even admits as much? narrative darling Isaac is the one that comes off as being immature to me in all this, only sharing his knowledge of alucard's whereabouts and the possibility of a Belmont being in the picture after Hector disagrees with him and catches Drac's attention, which to me read as Isaac trying to one-up Hector in this scene. wouldn't it have been to the entire war council's benefit and even Drac himself if he volunteered that information sooner? the way Carmilla blows up on Godbrand should tell you all you need to know about the urgency of the matter, yet Isaac is choosing to keep this information to himself and only brings it up when it would seemingly benefit his own standing in Drac's court. doesn't seem very mature to me :/ (and seems weirdly ooc for him?) he doesn't even act on this information by, idk, volunteering a troop of night creatures to raid the Belmont Hold, again this falls to Hector to deal with (under dubious circumstances, sure, but he actually does something about it)
after all this, why am i supposed to believe Hector is a manchild? if S3 and S4 had gone any other way, i might have interpreted it as the narrative trying to show how everyone around Hector underestimates him due to his more merciful nature (paralleling Lenore's character) but yeah, because nothing comes of it, it just makes the implications of an already uncomfortable scene even worse. and then there's Alucard and the "teenager trapped in a grown man's body"…i don't know what to think of this line, honestly. taken at face value it obviously opens a whole can of worms for their choices in S3E9, but it also kinda just feels like a throwaway line for comic relief…? the whole sequence it happens in is part of some light banter between him and Sypha, and yeah it would explain the shit attitude he has towards Trevor but also. this is NFCV Trevor - he's kind of a shithead to Alucard every opportunity he gets, is it really any wonder Alucard would be less than friendly with him…? i can buy that Trevor's unique brand of off-putting is enough to get under Alucard's skin, considering all the emotional turmoil he's going through. why not just sink to his level and blow off some steam by matching his energy y'know, even if it is ooc as hell again, not disagreeing with any of your points, more just showing how even if you try to devil's advocate for the show's decision, it ends up not making any sense either. bad writing and bad decisions all around, how is this 'the adaptation of all time'

Tumblr media
I'm still trying to get the hang of the whole "posting content" thing, but I think providing a reading wrap-up every month will allow me a little more to work with. January was a fairly standard reading month. I was able to get through ten books, though I added quite a few to my TBR. Kind of had a mini heart attack when I realized that, according to my Storygraph, I have about 1,731 titles on there. Well, at least I know I'll never run short of reading material.
Total Books Read: 10
Total Pages Read: 3,689
Books Read:
The Devil Aspect by Craig Russell - (Review) (3.5/5)
Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster by Jonathan Auxier - All I have to say is that the best kind of children's fiction tends to be the ones that expertly balance the harsh cruelties of life, especially during the Victorian era, with an unshakable sense of hope and a lot of heart. Sweep is one of those books that doesn't shy away from the reality and history of children in peril, but there is a warmness in its pages that comes from feeling and seeing the love and protection of dear ones long since passed. Definitely a bit of a tearjerker, but in a good way. (4/5)
The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu - (Review) (4/5)
Property of the Rebel Librarian by Allison Varnes - Looking at the world around us, this book couldn't be more relevant, as book bans are sweeping across schools and kids are left without a choice in what they want to read. Though it presents a somewhat simplistic scenario of censorship gone wild, it's definitely meant as an accessible way for young readers to be introduced to the process of book banning and what can be done to make your voice heard. (4/5)
Season of the Bruja Vol. 1 by Aaron Duran and Sara Soler - A really beautiful graphic novel that highlights the conflict of surviving indigenous traditions vs. religious colonialism. Stories that point out the hypocrisy and brutality of the Catholic church scratch such a good itch for me. The world is a little shaky though, not much is exactly explained and you almost need some prior knowledge of Mexican mythology going in, but it's worth checking out. (3/5)
A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos - (Review) (4/5)
Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison - (Review) (4/5)
The Ivory Key by Akshaya Raman - Though it takes a while to get going, The Ivory Key does have a great readability to it as the action finally kicks in about maybe halfway through. Up until then, the book spends a great deal laying the foundation of this world: tensions between cities, the role and history of magic in this society, the dynamics of the main characters. I will say, being introduced to at least seven different important characters in the span of 30 pages is a tad overwhelming at first, but it levels out the more you keep reading. While I did enjoy it, there was nothing particularly exemplary about the story that wowed me. The Indian-inspired setting and mythology makes it stand out, but everything else used the same tropes, beats, and twists that I've seen time and time over with little to add to them. I liked it enough to want to read the second book coming out later this year, but probably not enough to keep it on my personal shelf. (3/5)
Black Panther: The Young Prince by Ronald L. Smith - Read this one in a day and was fairly satisfied with it. It'll definitely appeal to middle grade readers looking for Marvel tie-in stories, as it has a quick pace and a good amount of action and mystery. For me, I don't think I enjoyed it enough to continue with the sequel, but it was nice to see a younger T'Challa and M'Baku out of their element away from Wakanda and how dynamic changed over the course of the book. (3/5)
Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim - For a book inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo, the story itself was incredibly simple and told fairly straight-forwardly, but I think that works in its favor. I'm at the point where I'm starting to tire of long-winded society dramas so I appreciated it for having a bit of focus. Everyone's motivation is clear, with a natural twist or two popping up along the way, plus a great amount of casual queerness. Though the world-building wasn't exactly intricate, there is a good sense of aesthetic and personality in the setting of Moray from its high status venues to the seedy gambling dens. I'm interested to see where the story goes in the sequel! (3.5/5)
Average Rating: (3.6/5)

The 70s Wrap Up #17: Lunar Rescue (Arcade)
Taito Legends is cool. You get to learn about some of the wackiest, most well hidden arcade games through them. We'll see it be well used in the near future, but as for now, I have to do this with the wildly expensive yet better emulated Space Invaders Invisible Collection on Switch. Ugh, convenience alert.
We're back in space for the umpteenth time. Descending from a mothership to pick up stranded little dudes from the moon!! Saving them all while not crashing into obstacles, which cleverly change upon ascension, going from space junk to an all out UFO (and meteor) attack.
This gameplay loop ain't my favorite, but it's executed pretty well. Stages last a much longer time this time around too, considering there's 6 stranded stickmen to enact the game's title on every time. Quirky lil detail, dying by missing the mothership lets those goobers exclaim a disappointed 'Aaa...' and fall straight down into a void of nothingness. That's the second game with 'Lunar' in the title that manages to be sorta funny!
Not a lot to say about this one that isn't redundant for this part of the review. It's a solid title that doesn't much wrong without excelling particularly hard either. It's the nice goodie bag extra you'll look at twice and have fairly pleasant thoughts of.
The Verdict
Graphics (8): The age of the Space Invaders cabinet starts to show with how it's presented. The colors are still stuck to specific places on the screen, plus the framerate seems to be down on it's luck a tad here. The charm, however, is still intact. Possibly unintentionally, the spaceship you play as almost looks like a character on it's own, as does the mothership and a portion of the enemy UFOs. Can't forget about the Space Invaders showing up on the title screen and after stage 3 too! For the hardware, this is cool beans.
Sound (6): Swing and a near-miss. A lot of sounds are particularly pleasing on the ears, it all sounds like a weaker copy of the plentiful other space games. Makes sense, it's still gonna recycle some of the Space Invaders spunk baked in. Too bad there's only a couple new noises that actually work. There's alright fanfares for when you succesfully rescue a man (an even better one when you rescue them all in a stage), as well as the sound effect for when you have shot an UFO being an improvement over the aliens of old. Aside from those, you get a lovely cacophany of beeps and sirens. I could've done without them.
Gameplay (7): It all works well, like shit, Taito knows how to make a polished title, yet I can't deny that their first big hit was also their only truly jaw dropping one for a while. This introduces a new concept to the table that i've not seen before, I like that too. Unfortunate that it can't quite shake my difficulty of talking about it since it is so self explanatory. It's entirely satisfactory!
Longevity (7): Real talk, the loop gets old fairly quickly. Outside of the randomness factor which I still approve of, it's not gonna be too difficult to beat 3 stages and see the little Space Invaders easter egg before the game maxes out. Beating Taito's 5000 points isn't a hard task either if you know what you're doin'. Slightly disappointing it didn't try to introduce new gimmicks or at least had you try to beat the max difficulty before seeing the cutscene. Still, if you're an arcade nut from the early 80s, chances are you're gonna have your eyes peeled to it for a decent amount of time.
In Conclusion
Tumblr media
I'm done! That's all for the 70s, folks. One more tier list and we are rarely gonna have to refer to this day and age ever again. Thanks for sticking with me throughout these 49 games, here's to so, so many more. Hopefully my writing will improve over time and I can get more in depth with my thoughts, I have not been very confident about my skills as of late...

Alright, now that we got the basic unbiased info established and out of the way, here are my personal thoughts:
First Impression: That cover is ugly as Hell. It has the same pale blue I disliked about the HBL cover but has swapped the ugly neon yellow with a somehow even uglier neon green. And randomly threw in a neon magenta for the secular title.
This is visual vomit, my eyes feel assaulted and I am sickened to my core.
Regarding the story, I'm very unhappy that it's set after UtE. For all I'm concerned the last book ruined the universe and made Val too OP for there to even be a chance for any story set in that time period to be even remotely good.
The title is so fucking generic too.
The Artwork: I don't like it, especially not the cover. I know I said I really wanted an SP comic, but I said that under the assumption Todor Hristov (the Grimoire comic artist) or someone with a similar style would be drawing it. Instead we get this.
Tumblr media
It's this cheap classic American comics style which I despise so much and not the more 'painterly' European graphic novel style I much prefer. This is ironic bc the main artist is from Northern Ireland. I do get that Landy likes this style bc he's probably nostalgic for it, but quite frankly, the classic comic style is a big part of the reason why I never really got into comics.
I would have loved to see how Todor Hristov draws the nasties, but I dread to see how THIS artist would draw them.
While this is mostly a personal taste thing I also see a few things I would say are art sins. Like the shading on the lower part of the hair. Why would you cross hatch/texture shade there. The shading lines should go with the flow of the hair like it was done for the top part of the hair. One eye brow is thicker than the other. And the way the nose is shaded makes it look like the face is looking to the viewers left while the nose seems to be pointing towards the right?? The nose shading is super weird in general. No idea what's going on there.
Tumblr media
And I dislike the way the skull was stylised. Too long upper jaw, to short lower jaw. And why is his jaw so wide??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering that Landy is writing this and he's going full control freak on it again, the art is the only thing an SP comic would have going for it. And so far, I don't like what I'm seeing.
They could have at least put more effort into the cover art considering that's what makes people pick up a comic in the first place :/ (comic cover art is often not done by those that illustrate the actual comic)
Regarding the TheBookSeller Article (there is alot to unpack here)
" The 144-page, full-colour graphic novel Bad Magic will be a completely new “self-contained story” which builds its own distinct lore separate to that presented in the book series."
I'm ok with the selfcontained part. But why does it have different lore from the main series?? It's not only set in the same universe it's the same goddamn characters!
"The author explained: “I didn’t want it to be just for the hardcore [Skulduggery] reader or even the casual reader. You can pick it up even if you’ve never read a Skulduggery book."
Yet ANOTHER entry to the series. A sure sign that things are going well regarding this IP. (sarcasm)
"Introducing a graphic novel to the universe was then a “natural fit” for a Skulduggery story and tied with HarperCollins’ desire “to lead the market and do different, new, exciting things”."
"Bad Magic arrives when graphic novels, spearheaded by Alice Oseman’s record-breaking Heartstopper series, are becoming increasingly popular [...] Yet the timing is, in part, due to luck: “We sort of loved to say that it was a clever plan, but it also ended up being serendipitous,” says Lake. Landy concurs: “The new emphasis that is now on graphic novels ever since Heartstopper is fortuitous; it’s not the impetus [for Bad Magic], it’s not how it started.”
"Bad Magic will undoubtedly tap into the pool of Skulduggery readers while hoping to entice new ones and appeal to the growing graphic novel audience."
Landy might have been wanting to do an SP graphic novel for a long time, but I'm sure that the reason HC greenlight it as bc comics are currently THE thing. In their minds anyways.
Seems like HC wants to use the current trendy thing to breath new life into Landy's dying IP.
"Readership has always been at the centre of Landy’s ethos: he will always add an extra element, such as an extra chapter or a deleted scene, to every new edition of his books."
Tumblr media
Oh please, if he respected his fanbase his writing in phase 2 wouldn't have been so goddamn lazy. Every fight scene that was meant to be one of the big ones was either vaguely described or not at all. The pandering is half assed and ill-informed and releasing the Grimoire in the state it was in was an insult to his readers. Not even the bootlikers could bother faking liking it.
And adding 'something extra' to new editions is the exception, not the rule. Plus, I know examples of deleted scenes/What-Could-Have-Been, but I'm not aware of him adding new chapters to books?? Do they mean the short stories?
"Unlike other prequels which act as an opening into the world, Hell Breaks Loose requires the reader to have already read the entire series. [...]“If you’re a fan, even though it’s not book 16, you need to read it.”"
That's in direct contradiction to how HBL is marketed as entry point for new readers tho.
Tumblr media
[source]
"It [HBL] definitely hinges on reading all 15 books, because it deals with a piece of the series’ history, [...] The novel promises to reveal two things “that will blow the fans’ minds"
Tumblr media
"Bad Magic and Hell Breaks Loose are the first steps in an extensive publishing plan for the Skulduggery universe. “The excitement doesn’t stop after 2023,” Lake notes, with plans for the 20th anniversary of the first book in 2027 and into 2028. A redesign of the backlist can be expected, alongside “very, very, very secret things”."
Ah, so this is the rebranding Landy was talking about. So all new covers will be a fucking eye sore. Great. Amazing. Can't wait to bleach my eyes out.
I thought it was finally over with phase 2 but they have plans at least 5 years into the future. How are they still going?? Globally phase 2 is a complete failure. Despite multiple attempts SP never became popular in America and I know that at least Bulgaria stopped translating and in Germany the book stores have like 2 SP books max when there used to be big displays for every release. And the fandom is pretty much on life support. Half of it hates Landy's guts anyways.

So because I like to be really complicated, I've decided to throw my favourite part of pretty much every Link's design (ofc the ones that actually change the design - looking at you Toon Links) at you. Idk, I'm an overachiever and I love gushing about one of the best character designs in video game history.
Obviously with the 8-bit designs, all there really is are artworks and the manuals to go off of because Link is a collection of tiny squares with 4 max colours. TLoZ and AoL are the same character so to be honest, I just love his earthy tones and facial features. Big nose rep. Goes for ALTTP, LA, and OOT as well tbh.
Speaking of ALTTP, that pink hair he has in-game is literally one of the best thing Nintendo has ever done.
A lot of child Links have this, but the baggy boots introduced in OOT are literally everything. I want to wear them every day of the rest of my life. The Oracle games also give him the flared lining and I would die to have them. Peak footwear. And the bracers Adult Link gets add so much to such a simple design, it's literally unreal.
The Four Swords games were cute with the bright colour swaps. I'm so mad they drew the artwork for the game in the Toon Link artstyle. Seeing artwork for it in ALTTP's art would have been so cool like what came on the European box art. The Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass came and introduced the most adorable Zelda artstyle. Like he's just a cylinder and I love him so much. It's a bit like FS(A) where he just got so much more colourful too. Spirit Tracks gave Link this cute engineer uniform that I cannot get over. Ever.
Twilight Princess. I'm sorry but he's just a whole hunk of man right there. The darker graphics went so far for him, his outfit was so detailed at the time and he's got such a masculine presence if you know what I mean. Oddly enough, there's so much I like about the design, it's so hard to put what I like into words other than 'a lot'. Sorry, I know it's not very helpful ^^;
Skyward Sword Link had such an amazing emotional range. He said absolutely nothing, but you could tell exactly how he felt, but unlike WW/PH/ST etc Link, his facial expression were really toned down and gentle. The most intense emotion he's ever had was fighting a god. Love that about him.
So I know ALBW technically shares ALTTP/OOA(/S) design, so I want to highlight the one thing that's different which is the giant, chunky bracelet he wears. Something about that makes me so happy for some reason.
Triforce Heroes' biggest accomplishment was the alternate outfits. Those boys literally strutting around in a forest in full gowns and costumes like it's nothing is literally peak fashion. Style over practicality any day.
BotW was literally a game-changer for Link's design in almost every way. I have no idea how Nintendo managed to completely change the design down to the fundamental GREEN of the Links before him to this cerulean blue and still keep the essence of what made Link a Link. And although Nintendo loves to go back on it in other material, I absolutely ADORE that they made his features so round and softly shaped, especially his eyes, compared to other Links. Nintendo will never take away how absolutely gorgeous that man is now they've achieved it. So we don't know much about TotK yet for obvious reasons, but he now sports literally the most revealing outfit in the franchise (other than him literally being half naked in BotW) and the fact it's paired with long hair is literally what I've been waiting my entire life for.
So yeah, I've probably made this so much more complicated, but there is literally so much I love about each Link, it's hard to choose my favourite overall features (except the boots, I love the baggy boots).
This is actually incredibly helpful thank you! I think one of the things I'm struggling most with the design is his hair, like he goes from a medium dark brown to pink to platinum blonde to bright yellow to almost orange and like... it's hard to make a decision lol. I do want to include bits of every game, whether that be with little accessories (like kinstones or belt buckles or jewelry) or more major features.
I am absolutely convinced on his schnoz though, he deserves a big pointy nose. It's going to be fun to try to balance some of his more harsh features with a lot of the softness we see in many other games, like he always has intense eyebrows (even in toon mode), but he also tends to have a baby face.

Hello, I saw one of your posts about getting involved in the writeblr community. I wanted to know how I could step out of the dark and into the sun! I am new and so lost, so any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks! :')
Hi and welcome to writeblr! Sorry this is such a late answer I was super busy with Easter weekend travels, hopefully you still see this anon.
I'm guessing you're referring to this post, which has the "crash course" version, but if you haven't read it yet and you are referring to something else, here's a good place to start.
If you're trying to get started posting about your own work, I think the easiest way to "step out into the sun" is to introduce your WIPs with their own post. I just realized I haven't done one of these in ages because most of my projects are 3rd drafts or stalled, but here's some old examples from when I first got started: AI-Lia Antares, Runaways. It can be as simple as a bullet point list, or you can include all sorts of cute graphics if you want. Another popular way of doing these is "Comic Sans Powerpoints" like this one for Storge, so those can be fun if you want to be silly about it.
Try to include the following info:
Title
Genre/Audience (ex. middle grade portal fantasy, dark historical romance, etc.)
Plot Synopsis
Maybe a quick run-down of the main characters
Any neat worldbuilding details you want to share
Featured tropes, similar books that inspired it, or a vibe/tone to expect from your writing style
Do you plan to publish it? Where can people read it if it's already published? How long is it? Not required but useful
Offer to create a taglist for people who want to follow the story
You can break this idea down into character introductions sharing their backstory, likes/dislikes, motivations, etc, or a blog introduction sharing links to your WIP and character intros, as well as the general stuff you like to write. You can pin a blog introduction to the top of your blog so it's easy for people to find by clicking the dots/meatball menu in the top right corner of a post and clicking "Pin". This makes it easier to notice writeblrs and make friends with common interests at a glance. Here's my pinned post for an example.
Tumblr media
If you're struggling to make friends, honestly I don't mind if people send me links or tag me in their intro posts. It might take me a while to respond with thoughtful comments, but I go through my drafts pretty regularly and I'll boost your work to help people find you. Really we're all just attention starved theater kids so I promise you nobody will mind if you pop into their askbox and just start asking questions about their WIP. In fact it would make their day. people regularly beg for interaction. Being a "regular" in their notes liking and reblogging goes a long way

Intro
Welcome, one and all, to this small corner of the internet. This blog has chapters of Time Flowed Backwards, but will feature lore, and whatever else about the AU I want to share.
For those of you coming here from AO3, you'll find lore and other tidbits here (COMING SOON), and for those of you who stumbled across this blog and are wondering what this is even is, allow me to introduce you to the Time Flowed Backwards AU.
Verdandi, a weak goddess in the grand scheme of things, is given the power to turn back the clock and prevent the prophecy from ever taking place. But the fennec fox-chimera hybrid has reasons of her own to go back a century before the Bishops of The Old Faith are slain.
She wants her best friend back.
But with her return, Shamura's wits restored and growing strong by the day, comes the trials that are inevitable when Verdandi takes up the mantle of Shamura's Emissary, their assistant. The complicated history she had with the God of War and Wisdom comes back to haunt her as she struggles with not only her feelings for the bishop, but what she is expected to feel.
Shamura shares similar struggles, their interactions with mortals unorthodox, and with Verdandi's return, their sanity restored, and a society to rebuild, they must balance that ever-fine line between following their duty as a god, and their wants as an individual.
As wise as they are foolish, witness these two gods define what it means to love without lust, and handle the obstacles fate throws their way.
(So yeah, they both ace lol)
Ask Box?
You can ask me (Dragonfire2lm) questions about the AU, or you can ask the characters stuff if you like! (namely Verdandi, Shamura, Basil, and Shamura's Inner Circle as seen in chapter 6) Granted, I won't be drawing any art for the replies (I cannot draw, sorry), but I will write little snippets and stuff for the responses.
Given the content in Cult of the Lamb, I'm going to trust whoever is reading this is at least comfortable with mature themes. While I won't write anything graphic, as this is more slice-of-life romance fic with a sprinkling of drama, keep in mind that the fanfic is rated M. (Mostly to cover my arse with writing this thing with fuck-all planning)
Also, please make sure you identify whether you're asking me or the characters when providing questions. I kind of need that specified, I'm not exactly used to running an ask blog or anything.
Other Links
She Who Understood Tumblr & She Who Understood Fanfic
Honestly, this fanfic was the main inspiration for my AU, I wanted to write something for CotL for a while, but could never pin down an idea. The author of She Who Understood helped me work out some things and then I just, started writing.
So, go check out her stuff once you're done here.

Game 230 - OMORI by Omocat
Tumblr media
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I just finished this one and it did a number on me, whoa. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail on the actual events of the game, but there will also probably be some spoilers. I'll keep it as vague as I can.
What did I think it was at first? I didn't realize until the end of the game when I looked up the link for this video that the Omocat who made the game is the same Omocat who made Pretty Boy, who I love! A relic of tumblr gone by.
I think I heard that OMORI has Undertale vibes, which is an assessment I agree with after playing it - though it is a loooooot darker than Undertale. Most of the creepiness of Undertale comes from playing a murder route - but in OMORI it permeates the whole game.
Tumblr media
How was the character creator? You play through two stories that converge in the end - Omori and friends in the whimsical world of Headspace, and a character you can name. You can choose some of your actions, but most of the game is fairly on rails - the main decision you get to make is whether you do or do not do certain actions.
The game does have multiple routes, though the ways in which they diverge are very subtle - I got the good route (though not the secret one) on my first trip through and honestly the rest sound too scary I don't think I can do it.
Tumblr media
How was the game? Throughout the dream world, you and your friends are trying to find Basil! You travel through a variety of cutesy environments and participate in wacky side quests. This part of the game was very charming, though you do get the feeling that something sinister is going on. Honestly would have been a fine game on its own.
When you are awake in the real world, you almost act as a detective, trying to figure out why your real-world friends aren't as close as your dream world counterparts. There is a very slow build throughout this part of the story, and when the two narratives converge at the end I seriously felt like the rug was pulled out from under me. My watch warned me that my heart rate was spiking. There's an excellently done third-act twist that legitimately recontextualizes the entire game.
The combat here is really fun. I liked that the standard RPG status system was reflavored as emotions. There's no messy gear curve to worry about, and no gathering! I fucking love a game with no gathering/crafting component. You're free to discover what combat strategies work for you - and though the fights feel a little repetitive when exploring the overworld the system never really goes stale.
The characters are all super charming and cute, and I kind of miss them now as my friends. Both the pixel art and the hand-drawn art add a lot of uniqueness to the game, and the music is on point. Incorporation of realistic graphics is used to add tense feelings and build suspense. It came off genuinely creepy, though I didn't really note any serious jumpscares or screamers.
Tumblr media
What did I not love? Overall, Omori is a really well-built game. It's very cute and the horror genuinely left me both excited to get to the end and dreading my arrival at the end.
The game arrives with a trigger warning: “This game contains depictions of depression, anxiety, and suicide, and may not be suitable for all audiences. It also contains bright flashing imagery that may cause discomfort and/or seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.”
I am not typically troubled by depictions of suicide, depression, or anxiety. I do, however, have a reaction to self-harm - which is a key mechanic of the game introduced in the early moments. It almost stopped me from continuing to play, and I would have really missed out on an enjoyable experience! There's also a scene with really intense animal cruelty much later in the game. Originally, it seems like the protagonist is forced to participate in animal cruelty - I happened to notice a skip for it but it's not made clear. I think the trigger warnings here are not specific enough and could cause severe distress to someone not expecting that sort of content. It's a shame, too, because the overall story is really engaging and cool. I think it would be cool to have a "softer mode" that eases up on some of the actual depictions and animations of blood, gore, and self-harm with more of a "fade to black" - I think the story would still have the same emotional wallop but would be easier to approach for a wider audience.
There are also a lot of Undertale comparisons here - both are wacky mixed-media pixel RPGs with surprisingly dark themes but an overall wholesome story about friendship. I think it's kind of an "Undertale walked so OMORI could run" scenario (though both are heavily based on Earthbound, I've heard, which I hope to play later!) but I did find myself making a lot of comparisons throughout the game. I don't think one would enjoy playing them in rapid sequence since they are a little samey.

At 17 hours and $15.99, was it really worth it? If you can withstand it the game is really good! Excellent bang for the buck - and honestly with the different routes you can also get a lot more out of it.
