okay after watching the choreo for "melting point" i think i've identified why i find the choreo for "crush" so unsatisfying and lackluster. so the thing with bigger groups, such as zb1 and svt, is that they can use the number of bodies they have to create satisfying images and dynamics within the choreo. it's like in marching band: a band of 200 students can create different pictures than a band of 40. my small-town school marching band of 40 kids could never put on a performance like the marching blue devils just because of our lack of bodies. you can look at twice versus blackpink, even; blackpink by themselves wouldn't have been able to do the intro to "heartshaker" purely because they lack the bodies.

and what strikes me as unsatisfying with the "crush" choreo is that it's a choreo that, i think, could be suited for a group with half as many members. it's a choreo that doesn't utilize the large number of bodies on stage, and that's somewhat unsatisfying (for me). "in bloom" and "new kids on the block" are both choreos that use all nine members and use them to create pictures and dynamics and add to the artfulness of the performance (think of the wave during "new kids" with gyubin in center). even "melting point" does this, though significantly less (the z towards the end with taerae singing). and it's somewhat disappointing (again, for me) because i can see each of the members pouring their hearts into the performance but because of the lacking choreo it just doesn't hit and create the same feeling of awe that i had when watching their other performances. and tbh it makes me wonder if "crush" was written for them or for another, smaller group, and the choreo was recycled from another group*.

*gunwook did say that they revised the choreo four seperate times from the original, so i'm wondering if it was a choreo that had been written for a smaller number

What intrigues me about the Thor 4 trailer is that between the teaser a few weeks (months? I don’t keep track of time anymore) back and last night’s full trailer, it seems like there is going to be a lot of plot happening in this film. Like, from what I gather, some plot points will include (but are not limited to): 

- Flashbacks to Thor’s childhood on Asgard  - Thor traveling with the Guardians  - Thor getting into shape at some point (though this will probably be a montage rather than a plot) - Thor battling with the Guardians (or, at least, throwing his shawl[? - personally I think it’s a variation on the slutty poncho from TDW but.] to reveal his new post-workout physique)  - Thor walking away from battling with the Guardians  - Thor returning to New Asgard/meeting up with Valkyrie  - Encountering Thor!Jane  - Going on adventures with Val and Thor!Jane (ending up with him naked in an arena at some point; Taika really likes the arena scenes I guess)  - Encountering Gor  - Being threatened by Gor  - Battling with Gor  ^^ the fact that Gor is the Big Bad implies that all of the other things are just part of the journey to get to the eventual showdown with Gor, yet I’m sure Gor is a whole plot in itself, so. (Anything less would be a waste of Christian Bale.) 

So basically what I’m saying is that I’m getting an idea of what Taika meant when he implied this movie is even crazier than Ragnarok and that’s cool with me tbh, there’s clearly too much going on to be able to tell from the trailers whether or not the movie will be good. Idk, I’m emotionally invested in this only to the extent that I will probably feel Loki’s absence like a big, gaping hole and I will feel Some Kinda Way if he’s not mentioned at all, but I was rather pleased that Thor appears to have a huge fucking tattoo of Loki’s horns on his back, so we’ll see how that all shakes out. 

And basically, other than that, I’m more or less happy to enjoy the movie bc I love Thor and did I mention loving Christian Bale, bc I do and it’s actually kinda embarrassing how excited I am to see his character in this.

Mizu, femininity, and fallen sparrows

In my last post about Mizu and Akemi, I feel like I came across as overly critical of Mizu given that Mizu is a woman who - in her own words - has to live as a man in order to go down the path of revenge.

If she is ever discovered to be female by the wrong person, she will not only be unable to complete her quest, but there's a good chance that she'll be arrested or killed.

So it makes complete sense for Mizu to distance herself as much as possible from any behavior that she feels like would make someone question her sex.

I felt so indignant toward Mizu on my first couple watchthroughs for this moment. Why couldn't Mizu bribe the woman and her child's way into the city too? If Mizu is presenting as a man, couldn't she claim to be the woman's escort?

However, this moment makes things pretty clear. Mizu knows all too well the plight of women in her society. She knows it so well that she cannot risk ever finding herself back in their position again. She helps in what little way she can - without drawing attention to herself.

Mizu is not a hero and she is not one to make of herself a martyr - she will not set herself on fire to keep others warm. There's room to argue that Mizu shouldn't prioritize her quest over people's lives, but given the collateral damage Mizu can live with in almost every episode of season 1, Mizu is simply not operating under that kind of morality at this point. ("You don't know what I've done to reach you," Mizu tells Fowler.)

And while I still feel like Mizu has an obvious and established blind spot when it comes to Akemi because of their differences in station, such that Mizu's judgment of Akemi and actions in episode 5 are the result of prejudice rather than the result of Mizu's caution, I also want to establish that Mizu is just as caged as Akemi is, despite her technically having more freedom while living as a man.

Mizu can hide her mixed race identity some of the time, and she can hide her sex almost all of the time, but being able to operate outside of her society's strict rules for women does not mean she cannot see their plight.

It does not mean she doesn't hurt for them.

Back to Mizu and collateral damage, remember that sparrow?

While Mizu is breaking into Boss Hamata's manse, she gets startled by a bird and kills it on reflex. She then cradles it in her hands - much more tenderly than we've seen Mizu treat almost anything up to this point in the season:

She then puts it in its nest, with its unhatched eggs. Almost like she's trying to make the death look natural. Or like an accident.

You see where I'm going with this.

When Mizu kills Kinuyo, Mizu lingers in the moment, holding the body tenderly:

And btw a lot of stuff about this show hit me hard, but this remains the biggest gut punch of them all for me, Mizu holding that poor girl's body close, GOD

When Mizu arranges the "scene of the crime," Kinuyo's body is delicate, birdlike. And Mizu is so shaken afterward that she gets sloppy. She's horrified at this kill to the point that she can't bring herself to take another innocent life - the boy who rats her out.

MIZU'S ONE MOMENT OF SOFTNESS AND MERCY, COMING ON THE HEELS OF HER NEEDING TO KILL A GIRL TO SPARE HER THE WORST FATE THAT THIS RIGID SOCIETY HAS TO OFFER WOMEN, AND TO SPARE A BROTHEL FULL OF INNOCENT WOMEN WHO ARE THE CASTOFFS OF SOCIETY, NEARLY RESULTS IN ALL OF THEIR DEATHS

No wonder Mizu is as stoic and cold as she is.

And no wonder Mizu has no patience for Akemi whatsoever right before the terrible reveal and the fight breaks out:

Speaking of Akemi - guess who else is compared to a bird!

The plumage is more colorful, a bit flashier. But a bird is a bird.

And, uh

Yeah.

I like to think that Mizu killing the sparrow is not only foreshadowing for what she must do to Kinuyo, but is also a representation of the choice she makes on Akemi's behalf. She decides to cage the bird because she believes the bird is "better off." Better off caged than... dead.

But because Mizu doesn't know Akemi or her situation, she of course doesn't realize that the bird is fated to die if it is caged and sent back home.

Mizu is clearly not happy, or pleased, or satisfied by allowing Akemi to be dragged back to her father:

But softness and mercy haven't gotten Mizu anywhere good, recently.

There is so much tragedy layered into Mizu's character, and it includes the things she has to witness and the choices she makes - or believes she has to make - involving women, when she herself can skirt around a lot of what her society throws at women. Although, I do believe that it comes at the cost of a part of Mizu's soul.

After all, I'm gonna be haunted for the rest of this show by Mizu's very first prayer in episode 1:

"LET" her die. Because as Ringo points out, she doesn't "know how" to die.

I'm a little confused why I'M getting this? I can't speak for what they were feeling or intending, I don't know them personally. I agreed with their analysis. I can see how it'd upset people, but I think it's the writer's rights to say "you're not paying attention if you go along with this route and your only conclusion is 'character sexy.'"

It's kind of funny receiving this ask tbh because I just mentioned to a friend earlier that I find the whole discourse just.. silly? There's no right or wrong way to tell a story with the options you're given in an RPG. The ascension option is there. The non-ascension option is there. I don't think choosing either ending makes the player a "good" or "bad" person. There's no moral or ethical weight to how you play an RPG. Most people I know will probably choose both options at some point for different runs, for different reasons, for different stories. That's literally part of the appeal of the game.

Frankly, I just wish I could go into his tag and find cool fanart and analysis of his themes rather than endless pages of bickering about those routes. When streamers are going out of their way to kill the "gayest" characters in the game to make a point, I think this type of arguing is overall pretty inane.

I made this out of initial shock from hearing it, and I felt like more people should've heard about this. But...after the shock wore off, I a few things felt...off. First, there was the user's bio:

I think even the people who hate viv and her fandom can admit that this bio is..questionable, to say the least.

Then I decided to through my DMS, where she said more questionable stuff:

She was deliberately planning out harassment to Viv fans. Again, even if you hate the show and the fandom, you have to agree this isn't ok. And when I said "uh, no" she then retracted by saying "it's mah anxiety".

And I bought it, but it still felt off to me. Turns out, the user was deliberately using a manipulation tactic on me to make me feel bad about opposing her. I learned that after after seeing this post which fully confirmed my suspicions that this person was full of shit:

The user is a known harasser in the viv community and she only wants to gain attention and rack up hatred for certain internet fandoms.

I feel like I should spread this around since the post has over 300+ notes, plus my most blowing up recently as well. I think both critics and fans should be aware that this person is a lying piece of shit, and block her on sight.

I'm a part of the HH/HB critical community, but I DO NOT condone any harassment towards fans simply for liking the show. I'm sorry for spreading this information around, I didn't mean to. And if you see this person...

I remember Tot said season 4 was gonna be sad a f*ck and that Yugo will have to pass some kind of "hard trial" (AGAIN) in this season because this kid will never have a good rest. Not even a breath. Stop. Give this little boy some holidays c'mon, the lord is always testing our little angel to the limit. (And by lord I mean Ankama I'm looking at you...)

So it's very likely that Yugo will start to suffer even more in the next episode. And of course, in the entire season :))))))) Let this boy have something, someone precious by his side more than an instant and stop take it from him in the next second, I beg you. (He just found his family... And... Qilby I guess. And Adamai just abandoned him already to investigate by his own way...)

Just seeing how the kings and queens of every nation were so disrespectful in front of him and just called his mother a monster and made her cry, well. (I want to riot! When Joris said they were "quite tense" he fell short.)

Okay, yes, I understand the eyes in the sky~ are pretty creepy and of course I don't trust her either, at least, like this is so suspicious for sure, no one was born yesterday even when she is trying to be so kind and helpful monitoring the entire planet (yeessss mom, way too much).

But, c'mon, this is a goddess as tall as... I don't know, as much as she wants, girl she is made of f*cking magic. If she wanted she could erase you from existence. She didn't have to give a f*ck about anyone and HERE WE ARE~
