debunking pro-snape/anti-james arguments and putting it on the internet because clearly i hate myself. buckle up. this is gonna be a VERY long post. im ready for the amount of hate i will get; im willing to take one for the team.
1. james forced lily into dating/marrying/etc him
this literally never happened? because its almost as if lily is her own person who is able to stand up for herself-
“I wouldn’t go out with you if it was a choice between you and the giant squid,” said Lily.
“LEAVE HIM ALONE!” Lily shouted. She had her own wand out now. James and Sirius eyed it warily.
She turned on her heel and hurried away [from james].
-and so she would not allow someone to walk all over her. its almost as if james (canonically) matured as a person, and she appreciated this, realised he was a good person and got feelings for him? because james’ only negative traits were that he was conceited and a show off. people are able to mature and grow from these things! james did this! he did not ‘force’ lily to go out with him!
2. james and the other marauders bullied snape
you know what, i cant even disagree with this one. you’re right - they did bully him. but lets look a little bit at the context.
sirius and james were both upper class, naive white rich boys. they are idiots. they were both stupid smart teenagers!! they were popular! and while this does not excuse the gross bullying snape was subject to-
Pink soap bubbles streamed from Snape’s mouth at once; the froth was covering his lips, making him gag, choking him
Several people watching laughed; Snape was clearly unpopular ... Snape was trying to get up, but the jinx was still operating on him; he was struggling, as though bound by invisible ropes.
-it (unfortunately) makes sense with context. james and sirius also stopped bullying people, and even expressed discomfort/regret with the way they acted-
“I’m not proud of it,” said Sirius quickly.
“Of course he was a bit of an idiot!” said Sirius bracingly, “we were all idiots!
[sirius talking to remus] you made us feel ashamed of ourselves sometimes
A lot of people are idiots at the age of fifteen. He grew out of it.
-when they were younger! i’d also like to point out these little lines i noticed when i was finding quotes for my argument which snape stans like to ignore:
James and Snape hated each other from the moment they set eyes on each other
I mean, he [snape] never lost an opportunity to curse James
there was a flash of light and a gash appeared on the side of James’s face, spattering his robes with blood
wow, look at that. the hate they felt for each other was mutual! snape also jinxed james! but oh wait - james was the one who matured! snape was the one who bullied his son twenty years later because he looked like james!
3. snape didnt abuse the kids at hogwarts
here’s a real argument i saw when looking through some pro-snape posts: ‘snape wasn’t an abuser, because abusers don’t let their victims retaliate, but snape did let the kids talk back to him’
what. the. fuck?!
this is the dictionary.com definition of abuse: ‘to treat in a harmful, injurious, or offensive way’ or ‘to speak insultingly, harshly, and unjustly to or about’. i’m pretty sure snape did both of these things-
“I don’t need help from filthy little Mudbloods like her!”
“So,” said Snape, gripping Harry’s arm so tightly Harry’s hand was starting to feel numb.
Snape threw Harry from him with all his might.
[hermione’s teeth]  "I see no difference."
‘Idiot boy!’ snarled Snape [at neville]
-on multiple occasions. i’d also like to remind you guys that neville’s worst fear is SNAPE?! his TEACHER, a figure that is supposed to be there for emotional and educational support is his worst fear in this entire world?! above the woman who drove his parents to insanity? over failure, over his abusive grandmother, over everything? his teacher? and for the pro-snaper that used this quote-
Nearly everyone laughed. Even Neville grinned apologetically.
-to claim that it was a joke, it isn’t a joke. because when snape came out of that cupboard, he was terrified. yes, it’s an embarrassing thing to have as your boggart, but the point is is that it is. he is terrified of that man.
4. james only joined the order because his wife was a muggleborn and he ‘had to’
this is just factually incorrect. james had been sticking up for muggleborn rights since he was in school, far before he started dating or even became friends with lily:
“Apologize to Evans!” James roared at Snape, his wand pointed threateningly at him.
“I’d NEVER call you a - you-know-what!”
so this is literally not true!! plus, at least he did join the order, whatever his reasons where (which were canonically good). snape didnt join the order. snape was friends with someone who suffered discrimination in society, and instead of using his privilege to help her and support her, he joined a group that was set on murdering people like her. when james had a friend who underwent oppression (remus/lycanthropy) you know what he did? he illegally became an animagus.
5. snape had to be a death eater to survive at hogwarts as he roomed with blood supremacists
this is the shittiest excuse i have ever seen in my entire life. as a poc, this comment really reminds me of the argument ‘i was raised in a racist white household! i cant control my beliefs!’
you can always control your beliefs. i understand not going on big rants about blood inequality in front of a bunch of supremacists, and i understand wanting to blend and fit in (especially because he was unpopular and needed the support the slytherin boys provided), but i will never understand then becoming an active member of the group yourself. he got the dark mark. he helped voldemort. he was a death eater, and a proud one at that! no-one forced him to join. this argument literally makes my blood boil.
6. snape had a lot of trauma from being raised in an abusive household
okay? so did sirius. so did neville. luna was bullied at school, just like snape. harry lived in an abusive household. did any of those people bully children? did any of those people join a blood supremacist group? and dont get me wrong, im not calling any of these people perfect - they all had a lot of flaws - but none of them hurt another people to the extreme that snape did.
7. snape saved the trio’s lives many times
this is the absolute bare minimum. ‘oh wow, he didnt let harry die!! what a king! he should be respected and praised! we should excuse all of his other actions because he didnt let people die <3′
8. snape is not a perfect person, he also did good that many people overlook
you’re right, snape did do some good things in his life. but unfortunately, for me and many others, doing a couple of good things doesnt excuse all of the shitty, abusive things he did too. we’re not ignoring them - we just dont think they’re good enough reasons to forgive him.
‘but james and sirius hurt others! you ignore all the bad things they did in favour of the good!’ you do the same thing with snape, first of all. second, they did a lot of good stuff. james’ and sirius’ only crimes were being annoying. for being a bit of a dick, conceited, knew they were hot and were a bit entitled. while these things are annoying as fuck, they were also stupid teens that eventually grew out of their behaviour and became better people. not perfect! better. while snape just stayed bitter at the marauders, long after their deaths, and even took his anger out on an innocent child.
9. people only hate snape because he was poc and queer coded
as a poc and queer person, please stop. this is a very bad excuse. being poc and queer (which im pretty sure he isnt, but anyway) doesnt excuse you from your actions. plus, a huge amount of harry potter readers are poc and lgbtq. why would they hate snape for those reasons?!
so thats all i got for today. im not gonna go into a deep snily/jily thing because i literally cannot be bothered. anyway im done. i need to go revise, i’ve already spent long enough on this.

Happy early birthday and one year anniversary Sol! I’m so excited for you and I like the idea for this event. I hope it’s okay if I send a request 😊
Im going to pick Zora fluff this time, and can you roll 2 times for AU, 4 times for dialogue prompt, and 2 times for the trope? Thanks 💖
A/N: Thanks Cindy! I hope you enjoy this! Camp Counselor Zora was interesting to write :)
Zora Fluff + Camp Counselor AU! + why do we keep running into each other? + "You might catch cold if you're not careful."
The assembly tent was uncomfortably humid as you waited with your group for the camp director to make his appearance, various conversations buzzed around you creating a low hum in the air. Your eyes scanned the room, sizing up the counselors you’d be working with for the next 6 weeks. There were several scattered around, mostly boys, but there were a few girls as well.
Your eyes landed on a flash of red in the corner of the structure and as you squinted, the shape of a man came into focus. You don’t know how you didn’t notice him before, with his bright red hair and borderline ridiculous outfit; how anyone could stand this heat with all that leather on let alone deal with children while wearing it was beyond you.
“Excuse me Counselor Y/N,” a small voice near your feet captured your attention. You smiled, looking down at the girl in front of you, “What’s up?” The girl exhaled loudly, “How much longer do we have to wait?” Frowning you glanced at your watch, and then at the stage at the front of the room, “I’m not sure, hopefully not long. How about we play a game with our group?”
You led your group through a series of camp songs until there was a tap on the microphone, sending painful feedback through the speakers.
“Uh, sorry about that, I’m not good with all this techy stuff.”
Your shoulders instantly relaxed, Camp Director Yami was finally here.
“Hello, campers!” His voice boomed over the speakers, “Welcome to Camp Black Bull. Who’s ready for a good time?” The counselors and children whooped and hollered but it seemed not enough for Yami, who cupped a hand behind his ear.
“I said, who’s ready to have a good time?”
You cupped your hands around your mouth to yell louder, the sounds around you reverberated through you, and you felt excitement rush through you, this was going to be a good week. Yami laid out all of the ground rules, the campers should listen to their counselors, and if they had a problem, find the nearest counselor to sort it out. After a few more camp songs, Yami made the announcement that you all were due back here after lunch for more group activities.
Yami left and you glanced at your clipboard to get the day’s agenda, you wouldn’t be going to archery until 10:30 and it was only 10 now, which left you 30 minutes to fill with camp songs and games. You left the tent with your kids in tow to find the perfect spot to sit and go over the agenda for the day until it was time for archery. You spotted an area through the trees, it would be perfect for what you had planned, but you had no sooner stepped into the clearing when at the same time a group led by the boy with red hair you’d seen earlier also stepped in from the opposite side.
You frowned, “I’m sorry but I think we were here first.” The boy raised an eyebrow, “No I don’t think so, I’m pretty sure we ended up here at the same time. But there’s not enough space for both groups here.” You ran your tongue over your teeth, feeling your annoyance grow already just from the cocky look on his face, his nametag read ‘Zora.’. “Fine, we’ll settle this with a game of rock paper scissors.” You said, tucking your clipboard between your knees.
“Best of 3?” He asked. You nodded and he dropped his clipboard on the ground near his feet. You faced each other, tension palpable in the air.
“Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!” You had rock and he had scissors, but you grew too cocky from your early win. It ended in a defeat, he beat you with rock and paper. You begrudgingly shook his hand to show good sportsmanship and he smiled, showing a mouth full of sharp teeth. “Good game, see you around Y/N.”
You led your campers to a nearby picnic table and you sat, going over the agenda of the day. “Alright, we have Archery in about 10 minutes, and then we’ll go to lunch, then it’s back to the assembly tent for some games, and then we have canoeing this afternoon.”
10 minutes passed quickly and you made your way to the archery field, brightening when you saw that your friend Vanessa’s group had archery the same time yours did. “Hey you!” You waved. She perked up when she saw you, a smile lighting up her face. “Hey friends, this is my friend Miss Vanessa!”
“Hi Vanessa!” Your kids said, waving to her. The archery instructor, a man named Klaus, soon captured the group’s attention and took over. As he explained what the kids would be doing, you realized how thirsty you were. Sadly your water bottle was empty so you tapped Vanessa, asking her to keep an eye on your campers while you went to the water station.
You started filling up your bottle, not wanting to leave Vanessa with 20 campers for too long, and you heard the crunching of leaves. You rose and saw Zora standing there, water bottle in hand. “Hello again.” He said, fingers raising in a quick wave. “Hello to you too.”
Archery passed relatively uneventfully, except for some of the kids deciding that finding bugs and giving them to you was infinitely more interesting than watching their friends shoot arrows. Vanessa and yourself led the kids to lunch after you both explained that bugs were not presents.
You made sure your kids were settled in line before you grabbed a tray. The way the lunchroom was set up, you would need two counselors per table, but Vanessa had already been commandeered by Grey tugging on her arm. She flashed you an apologetic look but you waved her off, heading for a table near the back of the room. You set your tray down at the same time as Zora, who sat on the opposite end of the table. It was hard not to feel like he was following you, you knew he wasn’t, and that it was just a coincidence, but it was maddening the way you kept running into each other.
Your groups seemingly didn’t have the same schedule, but you still saw him everywhere. Why do we keep running into each other? During the after-lunch assembly, you took a moment to pull Vanessa off to the side. “What do you know about Zora?” You asked, eyes flicking over him from across the room. Vanessa shrugged, “Not a lot, he’s kind of cagey and keeps to himself. Why?” You frowned, watching as he led his kids through a group activity. “No reason.” Vanessa got a thoughtful look on her face and then started to giggle.
“Oh I see, you think he’s cute don’t you?”
“What?” You protested, face suddenly very hot, “I do not!”
Vanessa’s smile grew wider as she watched you panic, “Okay, whatever you say.”
The lake lapped at your feet as you helped your campers into their life jackets. Noelle, the instructor in charge of canoeing cleared her throat, “Now, it’s important that you keep these on, the lake isn’t very deep but drowning is still a dangerous possibility and we need to be safe so we can have fun okay? Now get into pairs since there will need to be 2 campers per canoe.” A familiar head of red hair jogged up, campers in tow.
“Sorry I’m late Noelle, several of my kids took a while to change.”
Noelle waved him off, “Whatever Zora, just get them ready, Y/N’s group is already about to head out on the water.”
After you loaded your kids into their respective canoes and helped them push off, you paced on the dock, unsure of what to do except for supervising. Zora cleared his throat, holding up two life jackets. “Want to share a canoe?” You bit your lip, considering his request, your eyes flicked to Noelle and she nodded, stating that she could handle any water emergencies. “Sure.” You took the life jacket from him gingerly. You set your backpack by the lifeguard stand and put the lifejacket on so it sat snug around you. Zora was taller than you, so you’d need to be in the front.
You sat in the canoe and Zora pushed off, rocking the boat as he jumped into it. You paddled along quietly, save for saying hello to a few of your campers. A few of the girls giggled and began singing, “Y/N and Zora sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g.” You yelled out a protest, cheeks warming at the thought; you’d known this man for exactly a day and your campers were already trying to get you together. You tried to push the thoughts out of your mind, there was no way you liked him, no matter what Vanessa said.
Suddenly a giant piece of what looked like driftwood smashed into the boat, sending you rocking. “Where did that come from?” You asked, turning over your shoulder to look at Zora.
“No idea,” He shrugged, “This is a lake so there shouldn’t be a current here.”
The boat was bumped a second time, this time from underneath and you were sent into the air. You yelled in surprise as you saw what had capsized your boat, it was a giant dolphin! You landed in the water with a splash, the cold water making you gasp. You swam to the dock and were pulled out by a pair of strong arms. Zora ran to a nearby supply shed and emerged with two fluffy towels; as you sat shivering on the dock he gently wrapped one of them around your shoulders.
“Th-thank you.” You stuttered through your chattering teeth. As you glanced at him you noticed his shirt was off, for such a slender guy he was muscular and you couldn’t help but stare. He noticed you staring and chuckled, “Wanna take a photo? It’ll last longer.”
You sputtered at his words, cheeks heating up enough to make you forget how cold you were. At your panicked expression, he chuckled once more, wrapping his towel around his shoulders, “I’m just joking.”
You didn’t have time to respond because Noelle jogged up with a concerned look on her face, “Hey you two, are you alright?” You both nodded, “What about the children?”
Noelle nodded, “All present and accounted for. I’ll take care of them, why don’t you change? You might catch cold if you’re not careful.”
You and Zora headed for the staff cabin, shoes squeaking uncomfortably on the dirt. After taking a quick but blessedly warm shower, you emerged out of one of the bathrooms with fresh clothes on. Zora emerged from the other bathroom a few moments later.
“Who knew there was a dolphin in there?” He said with a laugh, toweling off his hair. You smiled, “I know right? Maybe we should go talk to Yami about it.”
His mouth twitched, “Something tells me he already knows.” You made the short trek back to the lake and found Yami being chewed out by Noelle.
“Someone could have gotten hurt, Yami! What were you thinking, putting a freshwater dolphin in here?”
Yami rubbed the back of his head, “It’s my pet! I needed a place to put it.”
You escorted your kids back to the assembly tent and took a quick breather outside. Zora joined you with a quick wave, “Crazy day huh?”
You nodded with a slight chuckle, “I can see it now, headlines in the newspaper, ‘2 camp counselors launched into air by pet dolphin.’
You both laughed before settling back into comfortable silence once more.
Zora cleared his throat, “Say, Y/N?”
“Hmm?”
“Would you want to… Maybe grab a bite this weekend, my treat?”
You blinked at his words, but decided that it couldn’t hurt, after all, maybe having a near-death experience together had brought you closer.
“Sure, why not?”
And so began a beautiful friendship, and perhaps more.

Ghost House
Tumblr media
Genre: Horror, Romance, Fluff Pairing: MarkBeom Word Count: 1.8K Summary: Mark and Jaebeom learn the hard way that you should always pay your respects.
Tumblr media
Opening the door to the hotel room, Mark didn’t even bother to marvel at the lavish expanse before him. He took no note of the decent-sized kitchen off to the left, the large living quarters before him with the balcony that overlooked the city of Bangkok or the spacious bathroom that was decorated with rose petals. All of it would have amazed Mark if he hadn’t been so damn tired. The flight to get to Bangkok from Los Angeles had been a long one and not just because of the time difference. They had experienced such delays with their plane getting ready and taking off on time. And during the entire ordeal, all Mark could do was tell himself it would be worth it. It was worth it.
And it was. It was very much worth it as he made his way into the bedroom, dropping two of his bags near the edge of the bed and flopping himself down onto his stomach on the bed. The bed was firm, but not too firm that it would be too hard to sleep on. There was just the right amount of softness that had Mark’s entire body screaming in happiness as he relaxed and buried his face into one of the many pillows. The sound of feet shuffling behind him caught his attention, but it wasn’t enough for him to even bother to move at that point. He just wanted to go to sleep and pretend the hell they just went through didn’t happen.
The bed shifted around him, dipping in specific areas as a weight was pressed down on him. He groaned, head shaking slightly as he was trapped underneath a larger body. “No.” he muttered.
“But we just got here.” Jaebum chuckled as he lowered his head and pressed a light kiss to Mark’s head. “Come on baby, don’t you want to head out and see this beautiful city?” he asked.
“No,” Mark said almost instantly. “All I want to do is see sweet dreams.” he muttered, voice obstructed from the pillow. Jaebum’s laughter only grew as the other wrapped his arms around Mark’s waist, slipping under the other’s body. He pulled lightly, rolling the two of them over on the bed. Mark pressed back against him, a disgruntled groan leaving him as he was pulled from his comfy spot. “Jaebum.” he whined out.
Jaebum lifted his hand to take Mark’s left one, thumb running over the gold band that rested on his ring finger. A small smile played against his lips as he was reminded of the ceremony that took place nearly 24 hours prior. An amazing ceremony filled with love, laughter, and happiness. It turned out to be even more amazing than he could have ever imagined and only made better by the fact he was now married to his best friend and the love of his life. “Mr. Im.” he whispered. “We need to do some cute, newlywed things.”
“Mr. Im.” Mark started and looked back at the other with a laugh. “I am completely tired and I want to sleep. Must we do something today?” he asked, brows furrowing together in light concentration as he tried to force himself to stay awake. It would be so easy for him to simply close his eyes and go to sleep. It didn’t help that Jaebum was so warm and smelt so good. He smelt like home. Safety.
“But Markkie~”
Mark hated when Jaebum whined and the other didn’t whine often. It was something he only did if he really wanted to do something and someone was denying him the pleasure of doing that activity. Mark never wanted to deny Jaebum something he wanted, but he was extremely tired and he was afraid this was going to be the one time he was going to have to say no. “Bummie, no.” he said and he could see Jaebum’s face falling. “I’m sorry baby. I love you, and I want to do things with you, but I want to sleep. Please? Let me sleep for a few hours?” He tried his best to give off a soft expression to the other. An apologetic look to make up for the denial. It seemed to work.
“Okay, okay.” A heavy sigh fell from Jaebum’s lips as he removed himself from Mark, tenderly laying the other down on the bed with a small smile. “Then sleep well for me okay babe?” He pressed a gentle kiss to Mark’s head and stroked his cheek lovingly. “I love you.” he whispered.
“I love you more.” Mark responded with a smile, his eyes already lidded and fluttering as he struggled to stay awake. “See you later.”
“Sleep well, baby.”
~*~
Mark woke up with a jump, looking around the room he felt his skin grow chills.  He didn’t know what had woken him up but his heart was beating fast and he felt a deep pit of worry in his stomach.
“Jaebum?”  He called out gently, feet dangling over the edge of the bed as he moved to stand. The thought of the other being in bed with him was cast out of his mind because he was sure he heard noises coming from out in the living space. While he enjoyed the fact this was a large, honeymoon suite, he hated that it was also so big. The large spacious area, covered in darkness reminded him so much of every horror movie he had ever seen before. And like every horror movie he had seen before, Mark knew that what he thought he heard most likely wasn’t Jaebum.
So he turned, looking to the bed, and sure enough, Jaebum was sleeping peacefully beside him. His eyes focused past his husband and on the red numbers of the alarm clock on the nightstand.
3:03 am
A glass-shattering had Mark jerking back towards the bedroom door, breath caught in his throat as he waited. There was definitely someone out there and he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to go out there and find out who it was. Only idiots did that and they were usually the first to die.
Rushing back to the edge of the bed Mark shook Jaebum’s body harshly until the other opened his eyes with a groan.
“There is someone in our room.” He whispered aggressively to his husband.
“What- Mark..”  Jaebum whispered, shaking the sleep out his head and sitting up. “Honey you’ve seen too many movies, it’s okay. It’s just us.” Jaebum said calmly. Not seconds after the words left his lips another glass shattered in the other room.  Mark jerked at the noise, body tensing as he turned and glared at the other.
“That isn’t a movie!”  He complained, tugging the other out of bed and hastily pushing him to the door.
“Check it out.”  He whined. Jaebum threw him a confused look, to which Mark responded with another whine. “You always say you’re the man in the relationship. So go be a man.” He huffed and pushed him towards the door again. Jaebum stumbled forward slightly, body turning to stare at Mark, mouth agape at the response he just gave.
“You want to send me to my death?!” He whispered heatedly.
“You won’t die!”
“You don’t know that!”
“Oh, now look at who is scared. ‘Oh Mark, you’re so silly. It’s just us.’ Bullshit. Go out there!”
“Excuse me! I thought it was all in your head. You’re always hearing things. This is real, I can actually die!”
“Oh please, don’t be a baby!”
“Don’t be a ba- Then you go out there!”
They locked eyes, narrowed and heated. Arguments like this were normal between them; an everyday aspect of their lives. It’s what helped build their relationship and keep it working. The bickering was something that they loved between each other and it was during a small bickering fest that Jaebum actually proposed to Mark. It was just their life. And Mark honestly didn’t want Jaebum to get hurt in any capacity. But he also didn’t want to risk his life and be killed either. It was a lose-lose situation they were in and he wasn’t sure what to do about it.
But before they could even try to work this out and figure out who was going to go out there, the bedroom door slowly began to open, the creaking of the hinges gave away what was happening. They both visibly tensed, Mark’s eyes trained on the door over Jaebum’s shoulder as the older male turned slowly around. The door stopped halfway and left the two standing in silence. Neither one dared to move, or even breath, afraid they would break whatever spell was cast over them currently.
Seconds ticked by and nothing happened. There was nothing in the darkness outside the door; pure, black darkness.
Sighing, Jaebum turned back around and raised a brow. “See, there’s nothing there.” He spoke with true conviction. Yet Mark wasn’t convinced because who opened the door? He was getting ready to point out this flaw in Jaebum’s logic when the other suddenly went flying through the partially open door. It happened so fast that Mark’s brain wasn’t even able to process the fact that Jaebum was sent flying. Just that one-minute Jaebum was there and the next he was gone. His screams echoing out in the living room.
“JAEBUM!” Mark’s legs carried him towards the door, running as fast as he could, but the door slammed shut in his face before he could reach it. His hand reached out, grabbing the knob and turning it but it was locked. “Jaebum!!” he shouted again, putting all his weight against the door as he tried to get it to open, but to no avail.
It was stuck.
Mark backed away from the door slowly, mind racing with thoughts of what to do. His husband was on the other side of the door, possibly dead and he couldn’t get out. He ran his fingers through his hair frantically as he tried to formulate some sort of plan to escape. But everything came to a screeching halt as he heard a soft giggle from behind him. Instinct was telling him to turn around and see who was in the room with him. It was also telling him to run, even though he knew there was no place for him to hide. In the end, he just stood there, frozen in fear as he felt a hot breath on the back of his neck and a ghastly voice whispering in his ear.
“Pay your respects.”
~*~
On your next vacation to Thailand, take note of the ghost houses on every property. The size, color, and pillars all matter. You may think they are just decoration or just some superstitious toy building. But take heed in knowing that while you may not believe in the ghosts housed within them, they believe in you. And always pay your respects.

yeehaw!ateez - Chapter 2
IM SORRY FOR TAKING SO LONG BUT ITS FINALLY HERE!!!! thank u all for waiting!! :D - kiki
CHAPTER TWO - Warm Ups
The barn ambiance had gone quiet once Jongho had tugged a finicky Fuego into the stable. Heart thumping in your chest, you approached the stainless steel trailer, the sudden quiet of the yard making you feel almost uneasy. Shadows enshrouded the inside of the transport vehicle, and as you stepped inside, the small windows provided only just enough light for your eyes to readjust. You almost didn’t see the gelding at first, as his sleek dappled grey coat blended in with the metal walls of the trailer. His coat brewed like a storm—a contorting concoction of black and white over grey.
Gale, Hongjoong’s wind and sea.
Or Pegasus and Bellerophon, as even the most critical and scrutinizing of judges had nicknamed the pair.
You approached slowly, as if hurrying would cause Gale to evaporate and disappear like mist. The gelding had turned his head as far as his lead would allow him, watching you with soft sterling eyes that held an intelligence you’d never seen in any other horse before. You found yourself involuntarily greeting him as you unclipped his tie and attached another lead of your own. He snorted curiously at you, sensing your nerves.
“Hey there, Gale,” you said, finding yourself mumbling his name as you carefully guided him down the trailer’s access ramp. His ears perked up obediently at the mention of his name and raised his head to feel the sun on his coat. You led the gelding carefully; if anything happened to Gale because of you, you think you might die before Hongjoong has a chance to kill you.
Amazingly, Gale seemed miles more confident than you were. His hoofsteps were sure, and he took long strides at your side. He barely flinched as the gravel turned to concrete upon entering the large main stable, which was beginning to buzz with ATEEZ activity. You saw Wooyoung carry a black saddle into the tack room, and Mingi gently remove Domino’s halter. Farther down, Yeosang and Yunho worked together to brush Charity, who stood patiently at a pair of cross-ties. No sign of Hongjoong, but you knew his stall was already labelled.
“y/n!”
Just as you were about to unlock the stall gate, a voice rose to catch your attention. You turned to notice none other than Seonghwa, who was walking towards you with Dauntless in tow. The regal black stallion pinned his ears at you as he followed Seonghwa closer, causing Gale to tense up beside you. Seonghwa noticed and stopped at a safe distance.
“You’re y/n, right? Sorry, he doesn’t like new people very much,” he said with an apologetic smile. You nodded, understanding.
“No worries, I’ve had my fair share of troublemakers. And yes, that’s me,”  you replied with a laugh, desperately trying to ease the tension created by the two horses. Gale grew more and more guarded as the seconds ticked by under the shadow of Dauntless.
His smile didn’t change, offering you an involuntary twinge of guilt. “Of course, nice to meet you, y/n. I was going to ask you. The trails around Royal’s Elite are quite extensive, right?” He glanced towards the barn doors, then back to you. “I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of one. Dauntless here needs to cool off, and I know some work could do him some good.”
“Oh, yes, definitely,” you said, straightening. You pointed outside with your free hand, towards two cypress trees at the far end of the front yard. A dirt trail began between them, winding into the forest. “Between those trees is the longest trail we have, and it runs in a loop. There’s lots of flat area. Although there are a few cross-country jumps set up, so…”
Seonghwa’s expression changed, and he let out a chuckle. “Just because I’m a dressage rider doesn’t mean I can’t handle a couple of hurdles.”
“Right, right,” you responded awkwardly, hiding the pain with a smile. “Then I think you’ll be good to go otherwise. Are you all set?”
“Should be,” he answered, patting Dauntless’s neck. The stallion was clad in a black bridle and matching hunter saddle, and you admired his turquoise saddle pad for a moment.
“Okay, cool,” you said, trying to be casual. “The trail’s all yours.”
He gave you a dazzling smile. “Great, thank you!”
And then they were gone. You watched Dauntless follow his owner with a sassy flick of his tail, and Gale visibly relaxed once the stallion had left.
“You don’t like him?” you asked Gale as you returned to your previous task of walking Gale into his stall. Gale just snorted at you in response, tossing his head after you slid the halter off of his head. “He does seem a little hot-headed. But aren’t most Friesians like that?” The gelding stood patiently as you talked, ears pointed attentively in your direction. Suddenly, though, something behind you became much more interesting.
“Aren’t most horses like what?”
...God, you can’t get five seconds worth of peace.
You turned around in the stall to find Hongjoong leaning over the stable gate, grinning at you. At the same time, Gale let out an excited whinny and almost pushed you over as he tried to get to Hongjoong. The man laughed as he was greeted with a faceful of horse, proceeding to scratch the gelding’s ears. You smiled exasperatedly and went to meet Hongjoong at the gate. “I’m not going to make fun of you for talking to the horses, especially since Gale knows pretty much all of my secrets,” he said with a laugh.
“Ahah, yeah,” you said in reply, still embarrassed that he’d caught you making conversation with a horse.
“Everything seems to be going smoothly,” he continued, glancing down the stable corridor. “But we’ve got work to do.”
“Of course,” you said, paying attention. Not like you knew what that work was or anything. “How can I help?”
He hummed in thought, pulling in the front of his lips. “Mingi and Yeosang want to go over some jump combinations just to visit the arena. Could you help us set up?”
“Oh yeah, absolutely,” you said. “We keep the poles in the garage at the back of the arena. Do you want me to show you?” you asked, just to make sure. To your surprise, he shook his head.
“I think I’d like to saddle up too, actually. It’s been a long trip, and Gale clearly has some spring in his step.” He gestured to the gelding, who tossed his mane as if on cue.
Your heart skipped a beat. You were going to see Hongjoong on horseback so soon? “Right, sure. I’ll set them up for you then.”
Hongjoong smiled. “Yunho will probably be out soon to help. Thanks, y/n.”
“The pleasure’s all mine.”
Leaving Gale in Hongjoong’s hands, you left the stable and made your way to the outdoor arena. It wasn’t a long walk at all, as one side of the stable overlooked the arena entirely. Behind the arena, the storage shed’s doors slid open with a worn creak.
Pulling the overhead lamp’s drawstring, the shed was soon washed in a warm glow. Jump poles were lined up against the wall, their colors foreign against the old brown planks, with the stands stacked beside them. You took a breath and lifted two of the stands into your arms, heaving a little with the effort, and walked back outside. To your discovery, another person was jogging in your direction.
“Heya!” he greeted you with a smile, black hair bobbing. “Hongjoong sent me to help you. I’m Yunho.”
I know who you are, you thought as you looked up at him, offering a smile of your own. “Oh, thanks! Nice to meet you; I’m y/n.”
He grinned, walking into the storage shed and coming out with two more stands like you. “Just basic warm-up stuff, right?”
“Guess so.” You shrugged. “I can’t imagine anything else after that ride.”
Yunho let out a breath. “Whew, yeah, it was long. Twelve hours.”
You nodded, opening the arena gate. The sawdust caked under your boots as you walked inside.
“Let’s just do a couple,” Yunho said, setting down his stands. “I don’t wanna be out here for that long, I’ve got sleep to catch up on.”
You laughed and set down your own. “Fine with me.”
The two of you set up around five or six jumps, most of them fairly simple. You were sweating a little by the end, but Yunho seemed as exuberant as ever. He grinned at you as the two of you left the arena, locking the gate behind you.
“I’ll tell Hongjoong and Mingi they’re ready,” Yunho said as the two of you returned to the main stable. “Yeosang is lunging Sunny, if you want to get him.”
“Sure. Are you going to jump, too?” you asked, but mentally slapped yourself in the forehead afterward. Of course Yunho wasn’t going to jump. He chuckled.
“No, I can’t. Charity’s retired.”
“Oh, yeah.” Nice going, y/n.
Leaving Yunho to talk to Hongjoong and Mingi, you swallowed and began to make your way to one of the circular corrals. Sure enough, Yeosang was inside, watching Sunny canter lightly in circles around him. Although her tail was still raised high, her head was lowered, and she chewed at the bit in her mouth, ears pointed towards her owner. A good sign.
“Hey, Yeosang?” you called, getting his attention. He’d noticed you and merely let out a deep breath, slowing Sunny to a walk. “The arena’s all ready.”
He blinked, watching you for a moment. “Oh, thank you.” His voice was soft, and Sunny snorted, turning to walk towards him. He gathered the lunge in his hands, taking hold of her rein and unclipping the lunge when she neared. The Arabian glanced up at you, her eyes bright and full of youth. You smiled- it wasn’t often you saw horses with so much spunk.
Yeosang looked a little tired as he exited the corral with Sunny. You tilted your head. “Is something wrong?”
“Sunny is a handful sometimes,” he said with a wheezy laugh. You glanced up at the palomino pinto, who nickered in response.
“I can see why,” you said, reaching up a hand to stroke her nose.
You walked with Yeosang and Sunny to the arena, where Mingi and Hongjoong were waiting on horseback. If you thought Mingi was tall on his own, he was a giant sitting astride on Domino. The Knabstrupper gelding stared intently at you as you approached, raising his head sharply when you stopped in front of them. Hongjoong glanced at Yeosang.
“Are you ready?”
You held Sunny still while Yeosang climbed into the saddle. Smiling down at you for a moment, he gathered the reins and nodded to Hongjoong. “I am now.”
With that, the trio entered the arena.
long chapter to make up for the wait!!! :D next episode is going to be fun haha. i’m spending some time with the showjumpers before the dressage drama starts up (eye emoji)
