as a system myself, it feels like there's definitely a bit of anti kin sentiment in some circles (not all of course!), which sucks as many people in my system are both fictives AND kin. fictives can be kin too! you don't have to just be one or the other. ex: hypothetically a pjo fictive can be ninja turtle kin! it just feels weird to seemingly? limit things like that in community spaces (though it can be annoying sending kinfessions we will admit! do i call myself a fictive of a character I kin just so you know im an alter in a system, or do I call myself kin and let everyone assume I'm a singlet?)

hi dokter (i think i spelled it right? sorry;;). im gonna sound like an asshole and i feel horrible about that but, i feel like a lot of people fake DID and multiple personality disorders. I know that i shouldnt fake claim people and such but, ive been on discord servers and theres a random channel dedicated to alters finding out who they are and then they always know how to set themselves up with a bot mechanic and switch between people rapidly. im a jerk for this, but genuinely in my head there is no logical explanation for how they have amnesia but know and understand discord completely. or how people will have fictives that are nothing like the source, just genuinely nothing like the character. its present in a lot of teenagers that struggle with mental illness and escapism, i think its less of a knowingly faking thing and more of a misdiagnosing themselves and truly WISHING there were more people there and they could share a body with dream. I feel like i do a fair amount of research, and looking into DID leaves me confused sometimes with how a lot of people online display their symptoms. why do alters all share an account and sign it? how do they all know the password? how do they all know how to operate it? (referring to tiktok because so much DID content comes from there, all with teenagers and young adults. i have yet to see someone over the age of like, 23 talking about DID. Not saying that just cause youre young you cant be blank, but i feel like its worth noting.) i guess i consider myself a kind person, and i dont care about what people do if it doesnt harm anyone. but this DOES harm people. i think its mostly people self diagnosing because they identify mood swings, different interests, and a yearning to be closer to their favorite fictional character or not be alone. so they truly do believe that this character is possessing them, even when its truly them changing their voice, putting on different clothes, adding an accent, and such. when people fake an illness, they dont fully understand what its like to have it and act in a way that is not accurate. isnt this the kind of thing that leads to stigmatization? to people completely changing their definition of DID since all they have seen is kids faking and acting like their favorite minecraft youtuber? i dont know. i feel bad since i hear from people with DID that they do feel this way, they feel like people now have a warped view of the disorder from people faking it online. Im not speaking for everyones experiences, maybe some dont care maybe some think its a coping mechanism, i have no idea. im sorry i went off on such a rant. i really like kats blog, she's helped a lot in ways. one last asshole note. None of us are psych professionals and none of us are claiming to have DID. Like sure there is a general issue of misdiagnosis causing the spread of misinformation which is to some degree harmful, but when I am explicitly stating that I don't have DID, how do you then read that as me faking DID? How is my experience inherently fake just because it isn't corresponding with the clinical experience of DID? Why is having the clinical disorder DID the only way my experience could be valid and real? Why is anything besides the clinical diagnosis DID fake in your eyes? Please spell that part out for me

Also anyone with a "DA" who claims to be someone IRL and then attacks systems because we're "doubles" of whatever delusion they are, you're disgusting and should get therapy. The only double is yourself lmao. Systems do not choose their alters. If one of my fictives source is Marvel, DC, creepypasta etc. they are real and i cant control it. HOWEVER if you're delusional you can control it by seeking medical help and getting someone to check you back into reality by a liscenced therapist/psychologist ofc.

There's nothing bad about not wanting to play along with your delusion or having you in a DNI or not wanting to do anything with you. Not to mention "IRL" is a term used either by fictionkins or Systems (to each their own) it was a fictionkin/kin term exclusively. But was overtaken by "DA's" who try to romanticize being delusional.

Also just to make it clear i do not condone harassment or reality checking of anyone whos delusional, this is not my place to do that and it should be left to either people they trust like a therapist or a friend/family member who actually knows what they're doing!!!!

However, for this post it is necessary of me to reality check. I don't want to sugarcoat psychosis nor do i want to feed into someones delusion as it will harm them and others.

I also want to say that reality checking systems is NOT a thing! systems/alters are real and fragments of us and our trauma. So reality checking doesn't affect us, since we are REAL. i got the idea after seeing how many fictives use kinnie blogs and how we dont really have our own spaces to gather and talk.

like when i talk to other fictives, or see posts by ither fictives, a lot of them say things about missing their source mates or maybe even a particular source mate. i have also seen some fictives vent about how they dont feel like they could be accepted because they feel they arent canon enough whether it be because they dont act like canon or they dont come directly from canon at all (im talking about au fictives).

well no matter who you are, whether you are a fictive of a somebody who isnt in source at all (mspa fictives, fantrolls, fankids, hiveswap act 3 leaked characters, aus), or a multi blood colored human troll mix with multiple aspects, or a "problematic" fictive (i mean like the character youre a fictive of is problematic, not anything else), or are canon straight from source, you deserve tons of support and to talk to your family and friends. you deserve tons of support in general. Being part of a system and especially being a fictive is really hard with how people treat us. we should all be there for each other and stuff, which is why this blog exists!

im really hoping i can help make a stronger community, and maybe one day spread to other apps like twitter and tiktok, maybe even instagram. idk, im not a big social media guy but i wanna help as many people as possible.

i'm struggling a lot with this recently, could i get a basic definition of the most common terms in the otherkin/fictionkin community? how do i know what fits- how can i tell if im strongly relating or i Am this character/species? i'm not sure where to start ]: hope you're well! anything helps!

To be perfectly honest, you're likely to get different definition of many terms, potentially more than one variant, from each and every otherkin, therian, or fictionkin you ask, and the language does change from year to year. The cornerstones haven't shifted much though. Otherkin is a person who identifies on some level as other than human. It is derived from an older term, elvenkind, that referred to people who identified as, well, elven. Kintype is the type of other you are. Therians are those that consider themselves animal on some level, usually something of earth though there's some that identify as decidedly otherwordly animals who prefer the term therian because their other is a feral or wild animal, not a sapient species. Theriotype is thus the species of animal the person identifies as. And the fictives or fictionkin consider themselves as beings from fiction, sometimes specific persons. Beyond this, terms tend to muddy. The way to figure out whether you are, or simply identify "with" something is to really take a long hard look at yourself and at the thing you think you might be. That means flaws and all. We tend to romanticize what we identify with because we don't identify with things just because the archetype appeals to us, but because it in some way represents an ideal to us, something we want to be. If we look at ourselves and our own flaws (which is truthfully a very difficult thing, we are not used to that level of honesty with ourselves at all and our minds will rebel when we try to face ourselves truthfully and honestly) and try to figure out what we're avoiding to see in ourselves, what we're trying Not to see, and compare that to what we're trying Not to see in the thing we think we might be, we can start to make progress. It's really easy to try on a new hat, a new identity, to avoid being ourselves, to avoid seeing ourselves as who we are, and we are Naturally biased towards ourselves in a way that is genuinely unavoidable. To some extent we can't see ourselves truthfully because we can't not be both the observer and the observed, but it's worth it to try. Because if you don't like what you see, you can choose to change it, to work on it, to keep an eye out for it so that you can stop doing it, stop being it. When we're looking at the difference between identifying as and identifying with, a lot of the self work starts with "does this benefit me?" It's not the whole of the work, but it's a start.

i've seen someone claim that fictives only pop into existence if you relate enough to them with trauma to help you cope and we tend to hyperfixate a lot to the point it helps us with dissociating and escaping the real world and often end up splitting... nearly the whole source sometimes if its really bad and i dont know if its true or not and now i feel like im faking... im polyfragmented so it could just be fragments but its still making me anxious

Hey there! Sorry you're going through a rough time with this!

Every System is different. I don't think it's a prerequisite that you fully relate to an Alter that you split. We certainly never identified with several of ours before they arrived here. Heck, one we never saw a single piece of media for until they arrived. They were just a character we'd seen in passing.

Some Systems split very easily. In times of high stress we're definitely one of them. We also found that splits happened much more frequently when we were in out teens. We split half of the characters from FullMetal Alchemist when we were in high school. It was a lot.

I suppose what I'm saying is if you're not choosing to fake things, you're likely not. I think a lot of people stick very rigidly to a specific set of criteria an alter MUST follow, without considering the very different experiences Systems have.

so like im not very booksmart about system roles but i consider myself a protector and also the host (me, isaiah, 24 :) <3). im usually the only one interested in drawing or blogging so 99% of anything on here is just lil ol me. i also front by far the most bc none of these assholes want to work so i have to take care of commissions myself lol

my first rl serious i think something's wrong w me alter realization was a Dave fictive when i was like 16-21 who would just black me out and autopilot when shit was really bad. I lost a LOT of time between when my grandma died, when my grandfather died, when i moved in w my aunt, ran away, moved in w my mom, and then left for arizona, and im pretty sure almost all of that was him. he hasn't fronted or had any kind of presence in the headspace in years tho besides like 10-15 minutes at a time once or twice when I got rlly triggered by a conversation. I simply do not remember anything that happens when he fronts which used to scare the shit out of me haha. lo said he thinks it's specifically 13 which. fair lol

bentley is definitely my most active alter these days. he's around 30 and tends to take over whenever i get upset abt some shit. he took the very very most brunt of my grandparental caretaking and medical trauma so like i don't rlly have those nightmares or intrusive flashbacks anymore which is nice. I tend to take on a lot of social obligations and I don't know how to say no but he Can and Will watch a man burn without pissing on him which is rlly refreshing tbh. he's the no obligations I'm hanging out alter. we're rlly close but I don't think he's friendly enough for lo :( he likes old trucks and 70s bops.

shys my youngest alter that i know of, he's like 14 and is like young isaiah (the oc) but nonverbal hence, shysaiah or just shy :) he's a sweet kid who just likes to be around and goofy. if he has to be verbal he does cry tho and his triggers are rlly different than mine which throws me whenever he gets set off. he's definitely got the most palpable and distressing fictitious memories, like he heard a line in a song and had flashbacks that made ME wig out. his is very.. idk bad dad parental abuse csa vibes, as far as the trauma pill he swallowed, but mostly when he's fronting he's in rlly high spirits! he likes neopets and yesterday was his birthday haha.

bulldog is rlly the only other guy of note & he's like? idk 19? i very much experienced the like adults arent taking care of me and so my tiny body is full of RAGE thing as a kid and like all thru my teens I had a FOUL hateful kinda temper. I'm cool as fuck as an adult tho cause that's his problem now. whenever my mom gets on her shit or I start thinking about my aunt he like zaps straight to the cofront to try to start some shit w my family which. fair! but no! he's a lot more mad about my aunt than my grandparents which hes probably the only one but fight the good fight i guess. he's just a real asshole, if uve ever seen me writing long vent posts on here bc im all worked up that's that anger boy cofront babey <3 he's DEFINITELY not nice enough for lo tho.

god i keep almost forgetting about the two 80s ttrpg fictives who integrated into me a year and a half ago and then somebody will say i seem very 80s and im like. fucking THANK you. SOMEbody noticed. which is very funny because i am not even kind of doing this on purpose i actually grew a mullet because i made a (modern! not 80s! late 2010s!) human version of my main kin and gave him a pseudo-mullet kind of initially as a joke and then i thought it looked so gender that i decided to grow an entire mullet from scratch and start lightening my hair again. and its been almost a year so i guess it just kinda stuck. (im considering changing the whole character design so none of my friends ever find out actually because i know my sibling- who also has a mullet mind you- would make fun of me and it would be 100% fully deserved and also probably count as karma because i make fun of their mullet and their mulleted blorbos all the time but thats not the point.) and yes its not impossible that the little part of me that was once a 17 year old with a mullet and an earring saw this 17 year old with a mullet and an earring and said “oh we have to start looking like this IMMEDIATELY” but i really dont think that was a major factor here. anyways it turns out having a mullet in 2022 kind of makes everyone read the fact that i wear a jean jacket and/or a flannel all the time as kind of 80s and makes my list of 80s movies that make my brain go brr seem longer than it is and makes folks assume that my playlist having a few songs from the 80s means i listen to a lot of 80s music (which i mean- i actually do love a lot of 80s music i just dont listen to it that much because i tend to fixate on specific albums and most of those albums are from the past 20ish years. also not the point though) and im definitely not complaining but i really wasnt expecting to get… i dont know, fictive euphoria? over characters im not even technically a fictive of. although im starting to think i might be kin with one of them (the one who had a mullet lmao) so i guess it might just be kin euphoria. the whole situation is very complicated and the line between fictive and kin can get blurry for us but tl;dr growing a mullet was a great idea why didnt i do this earlier

yes, i do think its possible, but i also dont think i can give you a guide or anything. it seems like itd be super specific to each system and each member within a system, and i dont really know your specific situation enough to give suggestions to you, sorry :( hope you figured something out / are coping better!

im grouping these two together here, though they are (presumably) from different systems- worrying youre faking is an extremely common experience, and youre not alone in it! lapses in communication are super common and in this house we Fully support informed self dx. you cant fake unintentionally, only you can know if youre “really” plural, and theres no wrong way to be a system. i hope both of you are doing well now!

we dont know a lot about agesliders specifically, but there are tons of people with variable age (agesliders, age regressors, medians with littles insys, etc) in relationships. its not uncommon at all, and as long as things are age appropriate for whatever age the sliders at at the moment i dont really see an issue. id also look into the term wavership for relationships that change type (platonic/romantic/etc!)

we dont mind! while some systems do intentionally create headmates (see: parogenic), we personally dont. a vast majority of our members are introjects- basically when our brain sees a character it likes it just decides it wants it here for The Serotonin or something i guess lol. our system used to be a Lot smaller (started at 4 members pre-discovery) but when we got into inclusive spaces we kind of stopped caring so much about member count and just let ourselves Be, and that led to a looot more of us showing up. some systems naturally have smaller member counts and some are huge, theres really no wrong way to be

the answer is that there really is none! some systems do use endogenic as a standalone origin, but (at least how we see it) its also an umbrella term for all nontraumagenic origins, which is a super wide range of experiences. some systems were intentionally created, some formed for spiritual reasons, some due to various mental illnesses and neurodivergencies, and some were just kinda born that way. if you want to get more into it, shoot us a dm!

i'm basing this off of the assumption that bren and caleb alone are a system, but there could always be more.

• bren is caleb's alter, despite being the born identity. in my system, host-switches (the act of the title of "host" being given to another alter through constant fronting or a retire of position) are fairly common, one happening every few years. it's completely possible that caleb, through constant fronting (or forced fronting), has adopted the title of "host" from bren, leaving bren nearly powerless to take it back for himself.

• he went to the sanitorium for having DID, not for being insane. throughout history, it has been said that people that were seen as less than neurotypical were sent to asylums and sanitoriums (there's a difference!!) to be "fixed" and to churches to be "exorcised." in d&d, you play as characters in medieval times, where this practice was most prevalent. to medical professionals at the time, seeing a switch of any caliber could yield "unstable" behavior, which could've lead to his hospitalization. maybe he was insane when he left, but he definitely wasn't when he went in.

the eleven years. the time spent in the sanitorium is entirely blocked off from his mind, and nearly impossible, even with caleb's eclectic memory, to recall. DID has few requirements, yes, but arguably one of the most important symptoms is dissociative amnesia. this amnesia occurs during high stress situations that can constitute as trauma or while one isn't fronting, both of which are caused by dissociation (directly or indirectly). for the purposes of these theories, i'd say it's a mixture of the two.

the "cure." while caleb was recalling his time at the hospital, he remembered that there was a woman that helped him get rid of the "cloudiness" from his mind. DID is a trauma based disorder caused by amnesia. "getting rid" of his trauma would cause amnesia. keeping his trauma would cause amnesia. it's a paradox with no happy ending. as a result, all the woman got rid of, in my opinion, was his vegetative state. this is why there are still times where you could conclude that caleb is still unstable. there's many of these moments in c2 so i'd rather not sift through them all.

• DID and its causes. intense, repeated traumatic experiences during childhood/early adolescence (around 7-11, with a few years error) causes DID. according to the timeline of his backstory, he was approached by the representatives of the soltryce academy at around 9 years old, which means he started working with ikithon at 10. this puts him just under the threshold of the most apparent developmental stage for this disorder.

• "caleb widogast" seems like such a fake name, not even with alias standards.

• caleb has been seen dissociating for hours at a time. if you're new to the program: after fights where he gets a hdywtdt on a humanoid while using pyromancy, caleb has to make a wisdom saving throw to avoid dissociation. this dissociation could last for hours, whether it be active dissociation (blankness while doing menial tasks) or full dissociation (unable to move, talk, or think). only something intense could snap him out of it, whether it be a slap of the face or a kiss on the head (that scene lives rent free in my head).

• some of caleb's attributes are changed from time to time. caleb likes a lot of things: bread, the scraggly hobo life, books, and numbers, to name a few, though there are times where some of these likes get shifted into obsessions, where caleb likes spellcasting, but bren loves the idea of staying up late and working on a spell with no sleep (and that counts as a point of exhaustion for both of them, not just one, because they share the body and therefore have to take care of it). it's not either of their faults, its just how they were conditioned during the time of their trauma.

• caleb has canonically talked to himself in the third person.

• constant polymorphs and shapeshifting alters. in my system, there is a veth fictive that can shapeshift between "veth" and "nott." she has admitted to using this ability to stay "front-stuck" (where an alter physically cannot switch out) because she can't switch when out of her "true form." now think of it like this: caleb and polymorph, especially in recent history. there's a tag going around, reading "*polymorphs into a creature to stupid to be depressed*" in reference to caleb's now constant use of the spell. it could just be us, but its still something to think about.

• there has been a "switch" in canon. i mentioned in the original post that there was a scene in canon where caleb has been seen switching, as a result of a confrontation from trent ikithon and the cerberus assembly. (don't mind the watermark im not rich)

this is a switch as a result of an auditory trigger. the hearing of one's name, a song, or even a random word adversely connected to trauma can be considered an auditory trigger. hearing bren's name, especially from trent, caused caleb to get immediately defensive and angry. when the camera pans back to caleb after everyone's reactions, you see him hyperventilating slightly with a face of worry, shut his eyes tight, and open them with a slack face to get a sense of his surroundings. he also leans near beau, someone who he could ask for context or reason, but then thinks against it as he remembers: they don't know.
