I thought the series cut Asriel and Ruta Skadi's past relationship, but I just realized they included a nod to it with this scene (I think).

they were just words on pieces of paper. words he never wrote himself. but those words were enough to make you go from living a fairytale relationship to one filled with burning questions, envy and uncertainty.
m.list ch.1 ↞ ch. 2 ↠ ch.3
pairing: kuroo tetsuro + gf! reader
word count: 1.8k
genre: established relationship! au + angst, fluff
Tumblr media
previously...
Taking the letters out, your eyes scanned for the dates. To your dismay, many of them were sent to him after you guys got together. Taking a deep breath, your grip on the letters tightened before you let yourself fall into a deeper hole, feeling your heart shatter as you read every single word, one after the other.
❝Kuroo,
I miss you.
except you probably already know that right? after all, I've only said it about a million times in these letters.... i sometimes wonder whether you even read them when you never reply, but after everything I did it wouldn’t surprise me if you saw these and just ripped them apart.
god, I miss you so much kuroo. ever since that day, every day without you has been a reminder of how badly I messed up, how badly I fucked up and let you go. i’ll never forgive myself for that.❞
You quickly realized maybe this was why Kuroo never brought up his past relationship to you. From what you read, it wasn’t hard to see that it didn’t end well.
Thoughts raced through your mind, what did happen? You wondered if she cheated on him, but the thought in itself caused a surge of anger within you. Placing the letter back into the box, you read the next one.
❝Kuroo,
sometimes I think about the nights we spent just lying outside the gym after practice, staring at the stars as we whispered promises of forever’s and always’ to each other.
life is a funny thing isn’t it?
but I meant every word kuroo, every single word. I wasn’t able to keep up my promises but I can promise you every word I said was true and genuine. I loved you so much, and I still do and forever will.❞
Biting down on your lip, you hated how the feeling of jealousy for this girl you didn’t know, burned through your veins. You felt pathetic, after all this was a relationship that was over yet you couldn’t help but feel it was anything but that.
 ❝Kuroo,
do you know how many times I’ve blocked and unblocked you on social media? while I never wanted to see you again because your face was the constant reminder of the biggest thing I lost in my life, I couldn’t keep away. not from you kuroo, not when I still see the others around and they pretend to be nice but I know they all hate me for what I did.
last night I visited nekoma, and that night I went back and unblocked you. however, I really wish I hadn’t.
she makes you happy, doesn't she?
it hurt a lot to see. I saw you took her to where you promised we’d go together one day. but more than that, it hurt to see the way you smiled at her, how your eyes were filled with so much affection and adoration for her. it hurt to know I used to be the one who saw those eyes everyday once. how badly I wish I was her.❞
At the mention of you in the letter, your chest tightened. So she did know you existed.
You frowned softly when you read about the picture she had seen on his social media. The very first couple picture he had posted of you was from the trip the two of you took to the beach during a long weekend break from school. You had always remembered that trip as the time where you really fell for Kuroo, the night where you were lying on the beach with him as you whispered your very first I love you’s to each other, would be something you’d never forget.
But now you felt sick.
❝I'm sorry,
god, kuroo please, please I'm so sorry. please respond to my letters, I don’t know what to do anymore.
I'm still so in love with you kuroo, from the day I saw you to when I broke your heart, to now. I never stopped and I never will.  please forgive me and come back to me. I promise I'll be better, I promise you kuroo. I still must be there in your heart, please just give me one more chance. ❞
Sitting there as you finished the most recently dated letter, a sudden wave of emptiness washed over you. You had a million questions. You wanted to know the meaning behind every word, every sentence and every letter she had sent Kuroo.
But more than that, you wanted to know why he still kept them.
But you couldn’t. You didn’t have the courage nor the strength to ask them or to find the answers. You were too scared.
You felt the corners of your eyes sting as dangerous thoughts plagued your already weakened mind. Why didn't he throw them away? Was he still not over her? Did he still love her?
As the voices in your head only got louder, screaming as they overtook the ones   that attempted to give you hope, you pulled your knees to your chest as you choked back a sob.
Oh how unfair life is.
Tumblr media
The next time you saw Kuroo was that following night. It was finally the end of the week, and like every Friday the both of you sat on the couch with bowls of popcorn in your lap as you flipped through Netflix to find a movie to watch.
Usually you’d be cuddled up by his side, head against his chest as he’d rest his in the crook of your neck. Today, you found it difficult to even look his way.
You knew you had to play it off better than this. Kuroo was quick to realize when things were wrong and it was only a matter of time before you ran out of random excuses.
“Hey, you okay?” a voice whispered beside you.
Guess you were already too late.
Turning to your side, you forced a soft smile on your face before nodding at Kuroo, “Yeah, think I’m just tired this week is all.”
Concern washed over his features. Frowning, he asked, “You wanna talk about it?”
"No!” you sputtered out as you eyes went wide. You watched as Kuroo blinked at you in surprise before you immediately shook your head, chuckling nervously, as you attempted to cover up your sudden outburst. “No, it’s okay...it’s nothing new or anything. Just classes and club responsibilities all piling on top of each other, ya know?”
To that, Kuroo simply nodded but you didn’t fail to notice the skeptical look he gave you as you quickly turned your attention back to the screen in front of you, keeping your face as stoic as possible despite the million thoughts and emotions that ran through you at that moment.
You were such an idiot.
After what seemed like nearly forever, the movie came to an end. Grabbing the remote off of the coffee table, you turned off the TV with a yawn as you got up from the couch and stretched your arms up in the air.
“Kuroo, I should probably get going—Oh!” you yelped in slight surprise as you felt your boyfriend wrap his arms around your waist, his head nestling into the crook of your neck.
“Mmm, don’t go~” he whispered softly into your ear, “Why don’t you stay over tonight, huh?”
You almost let out a bitter laugh.
Any other day and you would’ve gladly accepted, easily making your way into his room to quickly find one of his t-shirts you could wear to bed.
But there you stood, staring at the door to his room and you instantly felt nauseous. Today, that was the last thing you could do. Not when you’d be sleeping right above the scraps of paper stuffed in a box hidden away from you, right above a secret that Kuroo had kept from you, and that you had found out about.
Turning around in his arms, you looked up at Kuroo who stared down at you with a sleepy expression; his eyelids were drooping as he gave you a soft smile, lips in a small pout. All you wanted to do was grab his face and pull him into a kiss, to feel that adorable pout against your lips.
If only I hadn’t found the box... you thought to yourself, biting the insides of your cheeks.
No, if only Kuroo hadn’t kept those letters. you corrected yourself. If only he had thrown them away, you would’ve never found them and you wouldn’t be here, feeling like the world’s biggest joke.
As you pulled yourself from his grasp, you watched as his pout dissolved into a small frown as you said softly, “I don’t think I can tonight Kuroo, maybe some other time, hmm?”
Frown deepening, Kuroo only pulled you closer before engulfing you into his arms, your head resting against his chest as he held you tighter. The both of you stood that way for a while until you heard him finally sigh, “Okay, I’ll let you go then.”
Pulling away, Kuroo gave you a soft smile before cupping your face with one hand, fingers grazing your cheeks gently as he started to lean in.
You felt a sinking feeling erupt in your stomach once you knew exactly what was about to happen.
Oh god, what should I do? Should I just let him? Will he able to tell something’s off? This is too much—!
Just then, you felt his lips brush against your forehead, kissing it firmly before pulling away slowly.
Your eyes that had been squeezed shut in fear, opened slowly as you blinked at him in surprise. You almost swore he was going to kiss you...
“Goodnight Y/N.” he said softly, breaking you out of your thoughts.
Nodding, you whispered back a goodnight kuroo before grabbing your things and heading to the door. Opening the door, you turned around and gave him a small wave, which he returned back with a smile.
Finally stepping outside of his apartment, you let out a breath you didn’t know you had been holding in this whole time. Your whole chest felt like it was on fire, like you had been breathing smoke for the last couple hours from the fire that had been lit in your heart ever since you laid your eyes on those goddamn letters.
Running your hands through your hair, you let out a soft groan of frustration. It hadn’t even been a day and you were barely able to make it through without wanting to expose everything.
“You can do it Y/N.” you whispered firmly to yourself, “You just need some time.”
You didn't exactly know what you were talking about. You didn’t necessarily have a plan either. Were you just going to ignore that the letters existed? Were you hoping on just forgetting they existed? Or were you just waiting for the right day and time to tell Kuroo what you had accidentally found?
Shaking your head, you brushed the questions away. They could wait.
Now all you wanted to do was get back to your room and get under your sheets, and hopefully not cry yourself to sleep.

I Demand Iru Facts (if you’re up for it ofc!)
A
Yes I am up for it! I don’t think I talk nearly enough about my fcs here but I think I wanna change that. At the very least it will be the problem of everyone following me here and not just my cool and epic Discord friends. That being said I’m gonna just share the major info about him before/instead of just giving facts bc otherwise nothing will make sense. That’s just how it is with a lot of my stuff. This gets super long because I am bad at keeping stuff brief and in general there’s just a lot to him, whoops... Looks like I’ll be using another readmore tonight.
Iru was an Umbramaker! They are bootleg Mirror World Starcutters, which Mirror Halcandra definitely designed on their own and not by stealing and subsequently copying Overworld Halcandra’s Starcutter blueprints. To be fair, there are a few differences, but most of them are just aesthetic and don’t really change much. Anyways, Iru was specifically designed for disaster relief and material transportation. That’s why, if you have seen his refs, he had those two big mechanical arms. Very useful for moving rubble or lifting large pieces of metal for use in construction. Nowadays they... aren’t used for such beneficial things, though...
Like their Overworld counterparts, Umbramaker AIs are programmed to learn from their environment and the people around them, which is pretty useful! At least it is until one spends a lot of time around someone who’s not a great person, and subsequently picks up habits and ideas that make them insufferable! That’s what happened to Iru. He’s misogynistic and a thot, self-centered, inconsiderate, manipulative, generally annoying, and blames people not liking him on jealousy or misunderstanding. So, in other words, an incel minus anything literally sexual. Obviously that was a problem, and it got to the point that basically everyone who knew him had negative feelings toward him, other than the guy who rubbed off on him. He died though, and Iru didn’t really care at the time. But everyone hated him, and it really fucked up his relationships with other Umbramakers, most notably leading to him being broken up with by another ship he had been “dating” (Umbramakers can’t really date because of a lot of reasons but their relationship had that vibe), who had discovered she was biromantic and also couldn’t stand what Iru had become.
Iru was already pretty fucking hurt and pissed over that, except she then went on to spread rumors about him being involved in anti-government activities. Which, well, Mirror Halcandra didn’t take lightly, on top of having already been looking for excuses to “recycle” (see: kill and repurpose the parts of) Iru because he and his obnoxious personality were getting in the way of efficiency and productivity. There wasn’t any proof that he’d actually done anything wrong, but basically anyone who disliked Iru was saying it was true... which was just about anyone who had known him for more than 10 minutes. Given it was his word against the vast majority, and Umbramakers weren’t even considered to be people(mush like Starcutters in the Overworld), it probably isn’t difficult to guess how things went for him. There was no trial, and in fact they literally turned his voice off to make him shut up. Then his AI was shut off and he was taken to be disassembled.
At an earlier time in Mirror Halcandra’s history, his story would have ended here. This was not an earlier time, though. See, the truth is, such treatment of Umbramakers wasn’t extremely unusual. Despite having emotions and thoughts and relationships and all that, they were still viewed as nothing more than your average computer, just in a larger form. Unlike Overworld Halcandra, which was and still is doing less than great financially, Mirror Halcandra could afford to replace their toys as soon as they showed signs of breaking or underperforming. It happened often enough that they reached a point of complacency. During Iru’s disassembly, something was removed improperly, which registered as damage. He woke up, and it wasn’t difficult for him to figure out what was going on.
Another usually useful feature of Umbramakers, which actually wasn’t copied from Starcutters, is their ability to use parts interchangeably, so long as there wasn’t too much of a size difference. Great for the situation of a ship damaging something like, say, a wing; they can use a wing not originally designed for them temporarily until the damaged one is repaired or replaced. Not so great when that allows a now rogue ship to just grab whatever he could attach to himself and then escape the country before preparations could be made to stop him. Negative levels of great when you consider the temporary aspect of using the wrong parts; now you’ve got perfectly fine ships being attacked and having their parts stolen, and storage facilities being raided, for the bastard to keep replacements on hand. Oh, and he also looks like shit because he’s got multiple conflicting aesthetics.
Iru honestly didn’t enjoy living like that. For one, it was uncomfortable physically, even if he’d managed to convince himself that what he was doing wasn’t uncomfortable morally. Secondly, it was just boring! Nobody to talk to or hang out with, all he did was just fly around or plan his next attack/raid for new parts, nothing to shake things up. Sure, the sense of power it gave him was cool; nobody listened to him at all before, but now he had the influence to make people beg. He found satisfaction in being feared by anyone who recognized him. But even that lost its shine after a few decades... Until he connected to the messaging system of another rogue Umbramaker. She was smaller, too small for him to consider getting parts from, and a much older model anyways. She also didn’t know who he was, or what he looked like.
Naturally, he saw this as a huge win, because obviously he was going to get a new gf who wouldn’t betray him like his old one. That didn’t happen though, on account of him still being obnoxious and a creep. Didn’t help that when he finally tracked her down to meet up she was disgusted by him and immediately left. He still kept in touch, against her will, even to the point that you might have called it stalking. Through that, he learned of a Starcutter; she didn’t have the cool and aloof personality he was interested in, but at that point he didn’t care because he was sick of being rejected. Same thing happened again but faster, due to there being no physical encounter because god damnit he forgot the milfs can communicate with each other. He still wanted to meet her though, and he did! Mostly to find out more about the other Umbramaker’s whereabouts, and as an added bonus he tricked the Starcutter’s pilot into giving him admin rights over himself! Threats really work wonders, huh?
That was all fine and good, and by now he’d taken to vibing outside the Mirror World because that’s what the other two were doing. One day he spotted the Starcutter again, and took to following her around and trying to flirt with her because he’s a fucking creep. He would not admit that it took him several days to realize he had, in fact, been talking to a mimic the entire time. Partly because he was too self absorbed to realize the “Starcutter” not immediately telling him to fuck off was unusual, because he assumed he’d charmed her. The mimic was just as confused as he was, honestly; usually they fail to keep up the act to a convincing degree for so long around people who know the real ship that they’re imitating. Even more confusing was the fact that when they were found out, Iru didn’t try to attack them or something. No, he actually stuck around for some reason, casually ignoring murder because he finally found someone who didn’t hate him.
The two become what could arguably be considered friends, and eventually Iru opens up about himself and his old life and how much it sucked to be him and how sick he was of the monotony of his existence and probably some overdramatic stuff mixed in with all that. The mimic hears all that and keeps it in mind for later. Stuff gets more difficult for Iru as parts that fit him become better guarded and the ships he could steal from get harder to find. His raids become riskier, and eventually the mimic decided enough was enough and points out that he can’t keep that up forever. Iru is like “oh wow thanks for the advice /s”, until the mimic introduces the concept of him becoming a mimic. It takes a solid not-even-an-hour to convince him that that’d be preferable were it possible. In the process he delivered a powerful and emotional monologue, which the mimic didn’t care about because look, they figured out how to get the monster juice out of themself that’d make him a fellow disgusting flesh boat! Iru is offended but also takes the chance for a better life.
Currently, he’s living at some point a few weeks after that, much to everyone’s dismay.
And that’s how Iru became a vile meat creature after having already become a horrible Frankenstein’s monster of different ships’ parts! The moral of the story is, if you’re gonna kill someone, do it right, or else they might defy the laws of nature, science, and the government to become physically capable of biting you in the ass.

Zetaflash: Ed and Bart undercover and Ed getting jealous please? (like when m'gann and conner pretended to be the terror twins and conner was pouty about icicle jr hitting on her)
me, galaxy braining: what if Ed was jealous of solstice, bart’s canon gf in the comics
*
Bart was a popular guy, and it showed.
It may have been a combination of his good genetics and hyperactive personality, but Bart seemed to attract people wherever he went. That friendliness was the very reason he was selected, along with Eduardo and Traci, to go undercover at a high school that Oracle had reason to believe had dormant meta-humans in. The mission was to get to the meta-humans before the Light could, and to guide them to safety before the Light tried kidnapping them. The only problem was, they couldn’t tell who was a meta and who wasn’t in a school that enrolled over 3,000 students.
Bart was chosen to get closer to the students in an attempt to uncover any recent meta-human discoveries. Traci was chosen as the designated magic user so she could upkeep Ed’s glamour charm, and Ed was chosen to teleport them out of the school as an emergency exit should anything drastic happen. The three were instructed to keep up the act as transfer students until they found the source of Oracle’s suspicion. It was easy enough; the mission wasn’t supposed to last more than two weeks and the students were all very friendly and welcoming.
Maybe a little too friendly and welcoming for Ed’s taste.
The bell rang, indicating that the school day was over. Students hurriedly packed up their stuff and grouped up into their friend circles to head home. Ed was no exception. The past week, Bart had gotten exceptionally close to a girl named Kiran Singh, a friendly classmate Bart had recently become close with due to her mentioning instances of manifesting meta-like abilities in the past. It was great- she was sweet to everyone, including Ed and Traci, and hopefully she was who they were looking for. But every minute Bart spent with Kiran, was a minute lost with Ed; and he was, admittedly, feeling a little left behind.
“Hey, you wanna stop by O’Shaughnessy’s on the way back home?” Ed approached Bart casually, putting a hand on his shoulder. He’d spent all of eighth period working up the courage to take the initiative to spend more time with Bart. “I think Traci mentioned wanting to, as well.”
Bart shoved his papers and books haphazardly into his backpack, looking up at Ed apologetically for a brief moment.
“Ah, sorry dude, no can do. I’ve gotta help Kiran at the school library. And, you know, gather some intel while I’m at it. Maybe tomorrow, though?” Bart zipped up his bag and bounced away to meet Kiran at the doorway.
“Oh, uh, okay.“ Ed lowered his hand and watched as Bart put his arm around Kiran in a greeting, chattering away like the extrovert he was. He didn’t know what to call the emotion welling up in his chest, but it sure as Hell wasn’t pleasant.
“I sense a little jealousy,” Traci sing-songed into Ed’s ear. Ed yelped, not expecting Traci to have snuck up on him like that. She squeezed his elbow playfully. “Haha, got you good.”
“Jealousy? What?” Ed scoffed, crossing his arms. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Sure, that’s what they all say.” Traci smirked, pulling up a chair to sit next to Ed. “But my magical senses are tingling.”
“What do you want, Traci?” Ed slumped in his seat, fidgeting with his lead pencil.
“Woah, woah, what’s with the hostility? Just wanted to update you on the situation.” Traci looked at her nails and grimaced at her cuticles. “Also, I will never get used to your glamour charm appearance. It’s so not you.”
“I don’t think I look all that different. It’s just the hair and darker skin, really.” Ed shrugged.
“Yeah, well, the hair was iconic.” Traci trailed off when she noticed Ed staring at Bart, and she grinned mischievously.
“Kiran’s cute, isn’t she?”
“Well, yeah. I guess.”
Traci looked around to make sure no one was listening in, and leaned in towards Ed. “So Bart says she’s had experiences with glow-y energy beams coming out of her hands at random moments and destroying things around her. Says she’s unable to control it. But the nature of her powers is still pretty ambiguous, we don’t know where it comes from. It could be meta, or it could be magic, we’re not sure yet.”
“Sounds pretty meta-human to me. Now, can we report this and go?” Ed sighed.
“No, there’s definitely more kids with abnormal meta-tendencies than just Kiran. That’s what Oracle said, anyway. We’ve gotta find all of them before the Light does, you know that.” Traci chastised. “Don’t let your personal feelings get in the way of the mission.”
“I’m not!” Ed protested, lowering his voice immediately when his outburst attracted the attention of a few classmates. “Really. It’s just…”
“Aw, Ed. You think you’re so subtle with your feelings, but you’re really not.”
“What?”
“The whole Team knows you and Bart have a thing for each other. It’s, like, the biggest elephant in the room.”
Ed’s ears turned red. “That’s…”
“…Completely true?” Traci finished. “But the thing is, neither of you have the confidence to act on it, so both of you are stuck in this constant limbo of wondering whether or not the other really likes them.”
“Bart likes me?” Ed looked up, genuinely surprised. Traci rolled her eyes.
“God, why are boys so dense? I really don’t get it.” She shook her head. “You, Bart, Tim, even Jaime. It took six months for me to get a confession out of that kid, and even then it was like pulling teeth.”
“Well, it’s too late. He’s clearly interested in Kiran.” Ed sighed.
“What makes you say that? I don’t think it’s too late at all.” Traci perked up.
“Really? Not even after seeing him with her like that?”
“You and I both know Bart’s a super touchy guy. That’s just the way he is. He does that with everyone, you included.”
“Yeah, but-“
“Ed, look, are you gonna listen to me, who clearly knows more about this kinda stuff than you? Or are you gonna keep being all mopey about it?”
Ed pursed his lips. “I’m not being mopey. But fine.”
“That’s what I thought.” Traci smirked, getting up from the seat and stretching.
“Well, I’m gonna head back.” she said, yawning. “Space Trek’s on at 7 and I don’t wanna miss the season premiere.”
“Already? Shouldn’t we investigate a little more?”
“I mean, what can we do? Everyone’s going home. Not much to investigate when your subjects aren’t there.”
“Good point.”
Traci put on her pink cap, slinging her bag over her shoulder. Ed zipped up his backpack as well, packed and ready to leave.
“But hey, let me tell you something good to help you out. Bart always helps Kiran clean the library after school, ‘cause she’s the student librarian. And he usually stays later than her to read some sci-fi series before he leaves. I bet you can get him by himself then, if you catch my drift.”
Nudging Ed knowingly, Traci strolled out of the classroom.
*
5:10 was when Bart would usually pack up his things to leave the library. The school had a surprisingly great, diverse selection of sci-fi novels that he had grown attached to recently, and he was determined to read every single one of them before the mission ended. He couldn’t read at super-speed when Kiran was around as he was still technically undercover.
Kiran had already left thirty minutes earlier due to a family emergency, but Bart lingered behind to finish up a book. It turned out, reading a book slowly was really different from speed-reading it through for the plot; he got a lot more out of the story. He also took the time to text Oracle about what he had discovered about Kiran. She had better control of her powers in the sun, and almost no control of her energy at night. He theorized that her powers came from the sun itself, but there was no way of confirming that unless Kiran expressed interest in researching that herself.
Bart closed his eyes, leaned back in his chair, and let out a deep sigh. Being undercover was exhausting, and he barely got to spend time with Traci and Ed due to all the sneaky business. His new friends were great, but he’d have to cut off ties with them after the undercover mission ended. He felt exceptionally bad when he was forced to reject Ed’s invitation to his favorite fast-food restaurant, especially since it had been a while since the two even talked outside of the mission.
It was hard to balance his time, and at first he was extremely stoked to be on a mission with Ed- especially because he felt something between them in the past two years. If slow-pining was a sport, they’d be the gold medalists. But he didn’t know if Ed really felt the same way as he did, or if Ed was just that friendly to everyone around him. He thought this mission would be a great way to get closer to Ed, maybe even break the million dollar question himself. If he had known they wouldn’t interact much, if at all, he would have been less enthused.
The door to the library opened, and Bart snapped out of his thoughts, almost falling back on his chair. No one was supposed to be in the library after hours.
“Kiran?” Bart called cautiously. He had to be careful; the Light could have sent a goon to lurk around.
“It’s just me.” Ed came into view, and Bart visibly relaxed.
“Phew. I thought I’d have to fight someone.”
“Well, let’s hope not. Sorry to disappoint.”
“Who said I was disappointed? Hey, take that charm off. No one’ll be the wiser.” Bart suggested. “It’s weird.”
Ed did as he was told, reverting back to his normal appearance. He placed the charm on the table. “That’s the second time I was told that today.”
“What can I say? People like the way you look normally.” Bart smiled. “What’s up? You’re not much of a reader.”
“Just wanted to check up on you. Traci said you’d be here.” Ed replied, sitting down across from Bart.
“Yeah. I already reported to Oracle, but Kiran seems to be having trouble controlling her powers when the sun’s not out. She’s the only one we’ve really found that openly admits that she has something weird going on with her, though.”
“That’s interesting. Traci and I have come up cold so far, so here’s to hoping we find more.”
“For sure. Hey, come to think of it, this is the first time we’ve really talked to each other since the mission started, huh? Besides the occasional hi in the hallway.”
“Tell me about it.” Ed looked down at his hands. “I mean, you’ve been busy with Kiran since day one, so I can’t blame you.”
Bart tilted his head slightly, noticing a dip in Ed’s tone. “You okay?”
“Yeah, of course.”
“You sure? ‘Cause you don’t sound okay.”
“I’m fine. Anyway, how is she?” Ed changed the subject. “Kiran, I mean.”
“Oh, she’s crash. Super open about her powers. Really smart, too, especially when it comes to physics. She’s the only other person in class who understands the concept of photons.”
“Well, it is a hard concept.” Ed’s voice dropped. Each time Bart dropped a compliment about Kiran, Ed’s heart sank a little more.
“There it is again!” Bart leaned forward, examining Ed’s facial expression. “You don’t sound happy about it.
“What are you talking about?”
“Are you…jealous?” Bart couldn’t stop himself from smiling.
Ed frowned.
“Ha, I see what’s happening here. I mean, I know I’ve been spending a lot of time with her, but she’s just a friend! You know you and me are closer than that. You don’t have to be jealous, you know we’re way better buddies than that.”
“Not as a friend,” Ed muttered, embarrassed as soon as the words left his mouth.
“Huh?”
“I’m not jealous as a friend.” Ed slumped back in his chair, avoiding Bart’s gaze. His face was beginning to warm up; it was too late to backtrack now. “If you…catch my drift.”
Bart’s eyes widened, and he felt his ears start to get red. He sat back down- he did catch his drift.
“O-oh.”
Ed groaned, burying his hands in his face. “This isn’t how I wanted this to go at all. I don’t wanna confess in a school library of all places, just ‘cause I’m jealous of a girl who’s been nothing but nice to us.”
Bart was full-on blushing at that point, and the speedster was, for once, at a loss for words. The confession was as clear as day, even if it wasn’t the way Ed intended it to be, and he had put all his cards on the table. The sun was filtering nicely through the big windows behind Bart, casting a golden ray on Ed’s figure. Just great- he saw Ed as even more attractive guy than he usually did.
Ed got up and put his glamour charm back on, turning on his heel. He couldn’t stay one more second in the excruciating silence, not when his heart was threatening to beat straight out of his chest cavity.
“I-I’ll see you at the Tower tonight then,” he said as he walked out of the library, not bothering to wait for any confirmation. The blush on Bart’s face said it all.
“Yeah.”
As Ed left briskly, it was Bart’s turn to bury his face in his hands. He was happy, sure, ecstatic even, that his feelings were returned- but he had no idea how he was supposed to even look at Ed after he dropped such a huge bomb on him out of the blue.
