i think i’ve learned a lot when it comes to not applying my own values to the media i consume

for my script analysis class yesterday, we discussed two gentleman from verona, and nearly every classmate of mine was up in arms about how sexist the story is.

and i'm not saying it's not, or that it's not infuriating to read. but i'm also not putting my energy into getting upset about something written 500 or so years ago. and i'm not about to put my own beliefs onto these characters that are not me. i'm going to let their choices speak for themselves, and interpret it in the context of the story.

all that said, this now brings me to the point of alastor in episode 5, and how viscerally people are responding to it. those of you up in arms about the choices he’s making, and the violent threat he gave husk, you’re missing the entire point of his character, of this place they’re in, of the story being told. he’s an overlord, and he became an overlord by killing much bigger overlords and broadcasting their deaths over the radio.

HE IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.

if you started this show with the belief that every character working the hotel is a good person, you’re in the wrong place. watch the good place if you’re looking for a good wholesome story about getting dead sinners into heaven, because that’s not what this show is about.

you’re more than welcome to hate him after seeing the way he exerted power over a being whose soul he owns, but you’re doing the media you’re watching a disservice by writing it off so quickly. if you don’t like to be uncomfortable watching media, watch something else. this is an uncomfortable show, it handles uncomfortable topics, and it’s going to be an uncomfortable ride, and if you’re not up for something like that, then you should take a break from it and pick up something else. you don’t have to get online and defend your own ideals while you watch a show that goes against your ideals.

#idk about you guys but i find something deeply poetic in the fact that godfather and bottoms are like. in the same convo #rwrb got pushed to 10th place when i remembered that i did actually watch the godfather trilogy this summer #hate to give a coppola some credit but the godfather is a classic for a reason #it even kept my mum (the jane austen addict who hates blood and violence) invested and awake for the full run time #marry me with jlo and owen wilson got pushed down to 11 when i remembered die hard asdfghj #the ones who got away (2023 releases) are joy ride and scrapper. and aftersun. and past lives #if i have to pick a fave it's rye lane #it was just so iconic in every way #the script the visual story-telling the characters #the peckham of it all #also quite funny how obviously i gravitate towards a movie of colour #like. white people can make great art and i'll likely get to it #but i've spent a whole lifetime seeing those movies and now i'm gonna go out of my way #to make sure i watch all the movies of colour that interest me #polite society and they cloned tyrone and rye lane really just tick all the boxes for me #in terms of like. sci-fi/magical realism within the plot or the visual choices #i really mourn the lack of attention they got but i also know neither of them got a cinema release in sweden #and neither of them got any kind of substantial promo in sweden #so i can only assume it's a similar deal in other places #tragically enough

I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it but?? I really liked it mostly??? #It starts pretty small scale focused on the MC & slowly unravels the wider worldbuilding and narrative elements in a really interesting way #The first chapter or two I assumed it was typical high fantasy but then it’s like. oh this is a modern city. with emails and stuff. #The pacing is a bit weird - it’s quite meandering and also pivots significantly in the second half. tbh I’m still ????? about the ending lm #but also I am happy to float through on vibes. #and there’s some elements (like the doors that become….not that relevant) that I want to know more about. (as an aside - I saw someone say #that it’s a very clear retelling about Buddha’s son? which idk enough about but probably could give a deeper context to a lot of it) #writing style is kinda detached from the MC but also there is a reason for this that makes sense with the twist near the end! #which is a kind of twist i LOVE. Maybe I wish it had been emphasised a bit more over the story though? unsure. #I thought his mother's story was interesting also - you think she's an terrible parent just there for background context at the start but #then when she tells her story it's like ohh there's more context here. #also I hesitate to just say ‘if you like the spear cuts-- you should read this’ because I think the elements that are similar are done in a #kinda different way and might disappoint you if you’re expecting it to be the same as spear….but regardless the sort of dreamy writing #rich world; narrative with fantasy but also modern day elements; some of the writing style; mlm MC (tho not a romance) #idk. it will definitely not work for everyone but I enjoyed it overall #also it is full of queerness #bisexual books

I wish I could go back and tell younger me that I would in fact find that place one day full of people that I adore deeply and who I know love me in return. Who make me feel wanted and cared for and appreciated in a way I never thought would be possible. And none of it required hiding, or forcing myself to be a person I’m not. headcanons i have about Craig the scientist :)

as are most of the characters i have headcanons for, Craig is on the autism spectrum. he has a flat effect to his voice and facial expressions, doesn't really get most social cues, doesn't know how to react to others in pain the "right" way, misunderstands metaphors and speaks in quite a direct manner because it makes the most sense to his brain. he's quite a literal thinker. he also tends to hyperfixate so hard on a task that he forgets his basic needs and hygene, and thus has quite an unkempt look underneath that hazmat suit of his (which i will get into later!). Barry often ends up needing to get Craig something to eat because of how long he hyperfixates on something.

Craig sometimes doesn't exactly pay attention to his tone of voice, so sometimes he can say something that, to him, sounds completely normal, but because of his tone, can end up sounding really ominous to other people by accident ("We know who you are, Barry.")

Craig has traumatic cataract in his left eye (or wherever the fuck craig's visor crack is supposed to be in canon lol) from the explosion in 'Level 2' and is half blind in that eye. his eye has a very clouded look as a result of the injury. he's also got a huge scar there too that required some pretty gnarly stitches later, and his skin is almost completely numb around that area.

Craig also never really had the best eyesight before the injury, so he's always wearing these big ol' nerdy glasses underneath his helmet. and yes, they are tacked together with a band-aid lol

Craig is one of the few scientists who is not a clone of Peter Simpkins, the late friend of both Professor Brains and (in my headcanon'd canon) Craig. i like to think that Craig and Simpkins knew each other when they were first recruited by Legitimate Research and was pretty close to both him and Brains, and since Simpkins died, Brains has kind of taken more of a liking towards Craig (mostly out of loneliness and needing someone to help around at the lab, but he has a genuine fondness for him under his demanding and angry exterior).

There's a bit of a fan theory that Craig is the same guy as the scientist in the 'Robot Bird' rock opera, which i like to believe is the case. i mean, he's got the same monotone voice as Craig, it's gotta be him. i hope this does end up becoming canon because i think it'd make for an interesting conflict between Barry and Craig!!

Craig may or may not be related to Lab Lady.

Craig's counterpart in the mirror universe is named Kayla.

Craig is demiromantic and is questioning his sexuality (he thinks he might be bi or pan), though he definitely knows he loves Barry <3

Craig has an unhealthy habit of wiping his embarrassing memories, like, a lot. he wipes memories of awkward accidents in the lab, particularly painful failures, and most importantly, the memories of losing literally all his stuff and his career to Barry, which is why he doesn't immediately recognise him in the shorts. Craig has a lot of trouble recounting stories from the past because of this memory-wiping and felt a sense of emptiness, which getting hit in the head certainly didn't help with, so he tried inventing that apple in the Multiverse Madness event to get some of them back. it was pure dumb luck that Barry didn't end up witnessing what happened to Craig in the 'Robot Bird' opera and both are completely unaware of the disastrous can of worms that could have opened. bro's gonna end up like wallflower blush if he doesn't keep that memory erasing under control

and finally...

under his helmet, Craig has messy dirty-blonde hair, a rounded face that has a few stray facial hairs he forgot to shave, a long scar down the left side of his face, hazel coloured eyes and pale skin. this design is inspired by the designs made by @dexterno-artz and @schnabel53 respectively :D

this is a sketch of my finalised(ish) craig design!!! i've shown earlier versions of this guy in a couple of older posts but i haven't really revised his design much until now. i kinda had the idea of him looking like a stereotypical nerd and then made him messier. i might tone the amount of hair he has down a tiny bit but also i really like the nerdy bird's nest thing he has goin on :) i like to think he literally hasn't brushed his hair in several weeks and it's just become a bird's nest from nights of staying up doing science stuff

#had a really bad period this week #i'll spare you the details but let's just say it was quite literally a bloody mess #so i did some research and apparently even what i consider 'normal' periods are way above average #in terms of pain and blood flow #and i should really get it checked out #atm i think it's either endometriosis or uterine fibroids but i'll have to see a gynaecologist to make sure #problem is that for both of these conditions there isn't really any proper treatment #aside from 'take painkillers/hormones/the pill and hope for the best' #ugh ugh ugh #(technically i already had two chronic illnesses bc i've been diagnosed with me/cfs and pots #but they have very similar symptoms so i kinda just view them as one thing) #chronic illness fuckery

Hmmmm. Kinda, sorta, really bummed to see confirmation that Goro is DLC in P5T. Not unexpected (because why would they actually give him anything) but still extremely disheartening. I genuinely can't tell if it's just because they actually don't give a shit about him or if it's because they know he's popular so thrusting him into DLC hell means more money for them, or perhaps it's some combination of both. But I'm just....really tired. Either way I'm a dumbass and will buy the game because I am genuinely curious and would like to experience it for myself. I'm also an even bigger dumbass because I will gladly beg for any crumbs they can give us of Goro (as long as they don't destroy his character). Still, I just feel really drained after the last few days since the leak happened. Between people taking advantage to come out of the woodwork and harass/hate on Goro to the people that enjoy him and the fact that Atlus constantly treats Goro as if he doesn't exist half the time I'm so damn exhausted.

"It's just too much," blurts Tangent suddenly, and Marz startles back awake. "She... she looks at me and sees someone who doesn't exist. I don't -- I can't be the person she thinks I am."

"...I wouldn't know," says Marz, and her voice is syrupy with sleep that makes the lie come out more convincingly. "But regardless, if you aren't happy, why stay? That's not fair to either of you."

"I...."

Stars, she sounds so anguished. How sweet. For all she tries to hide it, Tangent has always cared with her whole beating heart. "Either way, darling, four in the morning isn't the time to make decisions like this, is it? Even for you."

That gets a little huff of laughter; Marzipan can picture the grimacing smile on Tangent's face that no doubt accompanies it. "I suppose."

"Mm, trust me."

"I do."

Marz feels herself smile, leaning a little against her palm. "As you should!" Another laugh, this one sounding a little less reluctant. "You can think about it after you get some rest." And then, because it's four a.m. and Marz really does love Tangent more than maybe anyone else on the planet: "Either way, I'll always be on your side."

There's a very long pause; Marz very politely pretends not to hear Tangent have to clear her throat through the line. "...Thank you, Marz."

"Of course! But don't make this a habit, I do need my beauty sleep."

"I won't." Tangent's voice has warmed; the smile Marz pictures this time is gentler than the last, the one she'd only remembered in adulthood. "I'll speak with you later. And thank you, again."

"You, my dear, are very welcome."

Crazy to me that people want to cast sorceries in Elden Ring without the staff. You simply do not have a wizard's temperament.

#me vs elden ring #don't get me wrong the diversity of casting methods with incantations is really cool #and I get *why* it's more exciting. Love the dragon incants love the frenzy stuff. More meh on a lot of the lightning #but I get why that's cooler to a lot of folks. There's a lot more *weight* to incantations. But there should be! #Incantations are a prayer made real. A miracle. A manifestation of devotion to a higher power and having that devotion answered #I mean sure sorceries could use a bit more diversity in their casting methods. I guess. #but I say that and I think we should get fancier wand work or something. #do you really want to move your hand back and forth to do glintstone pebble? Idk it just doesn't appeal to me. #Now what we *could* use is some melee casting weapons or more viable attacks for staves like the spinning weapon on the Regal Scepter #the carian sword sorceries do a lot to make the staff more active and I quite like how it is #it's fitting to me that sorcery is more basic and direct and that there are similar iterations of the same basic concepts #because it is a studied/created discipline. #and I guess bloodborne did star magic with very unique casting methods and animations but that's also like. #Idk in bloodborne it's really closer to incantations because you're tapping into a higher power you can barely understand #not casting a spell but *making* the objects you're using do what they do and barely able to control it #sorcerers in dark souls and elden ring *are* the masters studying and channeling the cosmos with control #explicitly in ways that *are* defined and understood while incantations don't necessarily need logic or explanation. #anyway I will always be a staff lover #actually quite liked using wands in demon's souls
