Their Heuristic is unknown to the Virus-Protection Software and some Trojans take weeks to be recognized but in meantime they can cause serious DAMAGE on your PC and break it even.

How to deal with a Sims 4 Game Patch when playing with Mods and CC

OPTIONS FOR GAME PATCH:

1.) Manual Update, day of (or soon after) patch release

2.) Delay update

3.) Vanilla play

OPTION #1 (MANUAL UPDATE)

If you are doing a manual update immediately when it is available, first thing to do is BACK-UP your Mods, Saves and Tray folders.

INSTRUCTIONS ON BACKING UP MODS/CC, SAVE FILES, AND TRAY (skip if you’re familiar):

Go to your Game folder, click and drag your Mods folder to your desktop. Then right-click somewhere blank on your desktop and create a New Folder (rename it STANDBY). Open this STANDBY folder and right-click in the blank space, click New Folder (name this one Mods). You are going to repeat the process until you have three folders inside your STANDBY folder. They should be titled Mods, Saves, and Tray.

Open your Mods folder (on your desktop) and the STANDBY folder at the same time (side by side). Select all of the files in your Mods folder (CTRL+A or Command+A), then right click on them and select COPY. Then click into your STANDBY folder, go to Mods, right-click the blank space, and select PASTE. Now you will have your original Mods folder on your desktop to test and use, and you will also have this STANDBY folder as a duplicate back up.

Next you will go to your Game Folder, select Tray, select all items (CTRL+A), right-click, select COPY. Then you will paste all these folders into the STANDBY>Tray folder. Then do the exact same thing with your Saves folder. Now you will have everything finally backed up. I recommend moving this STANDBY folder to an external hard drive (or flashdrive).

AFTER YOU UPDATED WITH GAME PATCH: please test once WITHOUT your Mods folder. Remove the entire Physical Mods folder from your Game Folder, place on desktop. This assists in a Folder Refresh. Let the game make a new Mods folder, with a new Resource.cfg inside, and rebuild from there. Don’t forget that you may need to turn on your Game Settings to enable script mods and custom content. This is in your Game Menu, under Other Settings. Considering “IF” the new free-floating objects feature “doesn’t” break CC. It should be safe to put your CC right back into the newly created Mods folder. At this point, you should still have your mods on your desktop. This is the point where you need to begin researching if your mods are working. To do this, you can check the comments below for mod updates. We implore you to follow creators on their social media for confirmation of working/broken mod reports. Most Script Mods WILL BREAK. Your best bet is keeping all of your mods on your desktop and only introducing them after

a.) mod has been confirmed working

b.) mod has been replaced with updated version.

OPTION #2 (DELAY UPDATE)

To delay an update, you must have pre-emptively turned OFF your Game Auto-Updates in advance. Next you will need to ensure your Origin Client is OFFLINE. This will mean that you can keep all your mods and cc in your game folder and continue to play unchanged. People do this in the meantime while they’re waiting for Creators to update their mods. This is the option for people who can’t bare to play without CC and Mods

OPTION #3 (VANILLA PLAY)

This option is for people who are too excited to wait any longer for the patch update and new expansion, and would rather wait for all the Creators to finish their testing and patches. So in order to do this, you will need to remove your Mods folder from your Game Folder, and place it on your desktop. Or you can disable mods and custom content in your Game Settings, under Other Settings. I still recommend backing up your saves and tray files.

GAME REFUSES TO START

If your game is not starting or prompts an error, remove all off your mods/cc, then restart. If it starts up just fine, then it is due to an error in your mods. If it does not start up, then you may have a corrupted save file due to a broken mod. Please be sure your game folder is saved in the appropriate path:

For those of you saying "my mods never break when i update the game". Mods can and most likely will break after an update. The word "broken" does not necessarily mean your game is going to completely stop working. So i'm going to make up an example to help you better understand. Let's say that Sacrificial's Life Tragedies Mod was labeled as "Broken". But when you play with it in game, you see no issues, and you receive no LastExceptionErrors. So you may think, "well thats not right, my mod is fine." when in reality its not. So some mods are massive and have loads of animations, objects, and content in general. If one tiny thing from it is corrupted in the code due to a patch update, it is considered “Broken”. So in Sacrificial's Life Tragedies Mod, you have five serial killers that you have the option of using. Lets say the game patch update breaks The Killer Nanny in that mod. But you never play with her ever. This could mean that you would never know that the mod is broken because you havent received any error notifications due to you not utilizing that portion of the code. This still means the mod is "broken" though. Broken can just mean that there is a small (or large) portion of the coding that is not compatible with how the game coding has changed due to the update. TLDR: a small feature can break and you would never know it if you never use it. it still means the mod is broken.

DEADERPOOL DISCORD: For the deaderpool discord, you will have to create an account on discord. its super easy. i absolutely love discord. if you dont know what it is, its basically like a massive chat room platform, particularly popular amongst gamers. If you decide to create a discord account, you'll have to download the software. its totally safe! i use it all the time. a lot of gamers use it as a platform to talk to their friends over voice chat when playing a game that doesnt provide a feature like that. if you decide to join discord, here is the link for the Deaderpool Discord (ran by the creator of MCCC): https://discord.gg/mccc

if you go on there, they have a text channel called "error support". its super easy to use, all you have to do is click on that channel, and then click and drag your LE file into the channel box. it will upload it to the server. theres nothing in your file that will get you hacked or anything. tens of thousands of files have been uploaded to this. its literally just a text document saying where the error is in your mod coding. From there, someone from the Support Team will respond with a solution. Its really great because they can help you to understand reading the code.

BETTER EXCEPTIONS MOD: This is a mod that you download from Twisted Mexi:

This mod will provide a new file to generate in your game called the Better Exceptions Report. When you get one, it will tell you what it suspects is causing an issue in your game. This is one of the most user-friendly options for new modders. When you see the identifed "issue" in the report, you'll have just to exit out of game and delete the issue (broken cc/mod). Before you re-start your game, just remember to delete the BetterExceptionsReport file from your game folder. Otherwise it will not be able to update it with a new one if a new error arises.

Fitness Motivation And Self-Image Blocks To Exercise

The biggest block to fitness in my client experience is self-consciousness. If you worry about going to the gym because you feel you will be compared to the fit members or feel too self-conscious in gym clothes or the changing room, then this will be such an unpleasant experience that you may soon put a stop to it.

Self-image is closely connected to self-esteem, although it is sometimes connected to cultural beliefs as well. Logically, the only way you can become or stay fit and healthy is to do some regular form of exercise. And walking is great but not enough for most people. What is more, you may live in a country where walking is impossible due to the weather or safety considerations. Swimming is a wonderful all-round exercise, but in my experience, getting into that swimsuit and being seen in it is one of the biggest blocks to exercise for my clients who would otherwise dearly love to swim. Even some clients who had a swimming pool in their garden have found it too embarrassing to get into a swimsuit in case the neighbours see or some other perceived shame.

I can tell you right now some logical facts about you and exercise: You are beautiful to me just as you are.

If you have bodily imperfections, the best way to enhance your body is with the correct exercise. And to do so, you have to exercise! If you have bodily imperfections, chances are that you have a small imperfection and a lot of negative emotion. If you do not like what you see in the mirror, that is your opinion which you are entitled to. However, do not expect anyone else to share that opinion with you. You are likely your own worst critic.

So for those of you who are not convinced by logic, please understand that this is not because you are stuck or that there is a genuine need to feel ashamed. This is only because logic is all good and well, but it is our emotions and our energy that determine our behaviour. Change your energy, and you can change your behaviour.

In my experience, it is best to work with an EFT practitioner to resolve this issue. This is because it may have some painful root causes which may require gentle expert handling. However, if you feel that the roots are not so painful, then you can tap for the embarrassment issue yourself. The simplest way to do this on your own is to stand fully clothed in front of the mirror each day and tap the following statements. Keep doing it for 10-15 minutes a day until you feel strong enough to repeat the procedure in your gym clothes or swimwear. Then keep doing it for 10-15 minutes a day until you feel strong enough to repeat the procedure naked. It is a process, and it is part of your growth and learning.

Setup I am willing to one day like what I see in the mirror, just as I am, and without judgement. In the meantime, I respect my feelings anyway.

Technical nonsense, overwhelm, and how to overcome them.

Heyo!

It’s been a little while since my last post. Of course, there’s been stuff going on, I just haven’t put any of it into a blog post, YET.

Unwelcome Tech Nonsense.

The essence of the back story is this; I bought a book, it inspired me, I attempted to do some graphics work based on that inspiration, the computery side of things let me down.

Bad. Times.

FRUSTRATING times…

Because, as you know, when you spend hours of your precious time trying to achieve something, to make progress, It’s REALLY flipping annoying when that work and time amounts to nothing.

The book in question is by a guy called Sean Vosler (Book link here; https://app.increase.academy/most-important-skill-guide ).

I liked his email sequence, the book itself looked nice (literally, visually very good). So I took the plunge and made the purchase. It’s a great piece, definitely recommended. He’s worked for Tai Lopez amongst others, and tbh, that was what clinched it for me.

Anyway, reading through, I was struck at how he uses font as well as phrasing to imply tonality. Copywriting is sales in print, and the more you can convey emotion, raising certainty and reducing objections the better.

This was the inspiration.

So I fired up Spark and started creating.

3 Hours. 3 Hours on a Saturday afternoon, adding text, moving, resizing, blah blah. This was kinda the POINT of the exercise, to see what I could make up, especially being a complete graphics noob. But Spark’s quite intuitive, so it’s not so bad.

Feeling all smug and pleased with myself I downloaded the image I’d so finely crafted. Guess I also downloaded all the unwelcome tech nonsense too. (I’m being dramatic, it wasn’t a virus or nothin, just a big pile of steamy digital baloney).

Darn. Half of it was missing.

I’ll get right to the point. If anything like this happens to you,

CLEAR OUT YOUR BROWSER’S CACHE.

To fix the problem, I cleared out the cache in Chrome for the previous month. Issue solved.

Apparently, if the cache becomes corrupted for any reason, it affects the browsers loading time, downloads, it can freeze unexpectedly… All the issues I was having.

I’d cleared out old files, deleted unused programs, defragged. I ran updates just in case. None of them fixed the problems of my handiwork getting mashed.

So yea, don’t make my mistake. Any issues with your browser or web-based applications, clear out the cache FIRST. It’ll save you a lot of swearing I can tell you.

(Yea, I know. It leaves a lot to be desired. But it DOES prove the concept.)

Overwhelm.

As you can imagine, dealing with stupid technology when you already have a thousand things to do isn’t productive. It causes a bottleneck. Well, any issue does really. But things start to back up.

When that thing you’re doing is the next step in your plan, what you’ve based all your other next steps on, you then have to take further time to figure out a workaround or solve it or both.

Building a business and a dream lifestyle from scratch is a lot of work. Skills need learning, social proof creating, domains set up. Hell, you gotta work out exactly what you’re selling, who you’re selling it to, and how you’ll sell it to them. And THAT’S the easy bit.

I have guests to invite. Microphones to find. Domains to set up, clients to get… Phew.

In my quest for knowledge I’m signing up for everything. Well, 90% of things at least. My mindset is delicate and precious, so anything I feel won’t add good things to it, I don’t chase.

In the meantime though, there’s so much great stuff out there. Loads and loads and loads of it.

It’s not even hidden, you just have to look for it.

Stuff’s coming in thick and fast. I’ve got about 8 courses to get through, 4 books on the go, and about an hour a day to do it in.

So anything I do, I’m neglecting something else.

It all kinda stalled me for a bit. It’s difficult to focus on doing a thing when you aren’t sure it’s the right thing to do. As a result, nothing gets done, and that CAN’T HAPPEN.

I went basic. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.

I made a list.

If you’re suffering from Overwhelm make a list.

Make it as long as it needs to be, pour your mind out into it, personal, professional, the lot. Once it’s down on paper, or the screen or whatever, you don’t have to remember it any more.

Then, prioritise.

The list I made showed all the things that had been swimming around in my brain hole. But I could see them clearly. Instead of things bobbing to the top occasionally, making me panic because I’d forgotten about them, they were all there as plain as day.

The most important thing on that list was writing practice. Obvious. But not obvious when everything’s weighing on you and you aren’t sure what’s the right way to get stuff moving again.

So I’d suggest if you write, then write. If you dance, then dance. If you draw, draw. Whatever it is that YOU DO, the essence at the core of your dream, then do that.

I started riffing on some sales copy ideas using random household stuff. Trying to make it compelling, using copywriting formulas AIDA and the S hook to start with, getting the juices flowing. Creating emotion around Table Salt.

It worked. Seeing those words flowing out felt productive. The wheels were turning again. YES!

The next thing is to see about getting clients. A lot of the stuff that bogged me down was related to Freelance Arc. But FA is the story of how I get there to help others get there too. But the vehicle to that success is copywriting.

I’d gotten lost in the swirl of ideas, easily done. But refocusing is good.

From here out writing will be my main priority for the short term, I’ll keep plugging away at the books for 15 minutes a night before bed, and probably squeezing in little chunks of the courses for 20 mins or so over my morning coffee.

Did you know, 20 minutes a day over a month is 10 hours? Doesn’t sound like much but it adds up.

Don’t be that person who makes excuses. If you’re short of time, JUST DO SOMETHING!

Future you will thank you, I can tell you.

How to deal with anger? I get mad so easily on things that are no big deal(ex. people’s behaviour, small bad situations). This feeling consumes me for days until I finally forget about it. Any tips? (Btw, I’m not interested in yoga/buddist way of meditation for anger/stress relief)

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with anger management issues. Anger is a normal emotion that can be triggered for a multitude of reasons like stress. Anger can be caused by an underlying disorder like depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Do you have any of the disorders that I mentioned above? If you do, I recommend that you talk to your primary care doctor about treatment for the disorder. Even if you don't have an underlying disorder, I still think you should go to see your doctor. Your doctor will be able to refer you to a specialist. Another option is to speak to your school's guidance counselor or psychologist. If you're in college, you can visit their counseling center.

However, I do understand if you're not able to get to a doctor or not comfortable going to see a counselor. There are some things that you can do to help control your anger in the meantime. It's okay that you don't want to try meditation or yoga for anger management. Meditation is often recommended to treat anxiety or anger issues because it activates the "parasympathetic nervous system." The parasympathetic nervous system calms down the "sympathetic nervous system" aka your body's fight or flight response. Think of them as the brake and gas pedals of the body. There are other ways that you can activate your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS):- Breathing is the simplest way to activate the PNS. There are a few different breathing techniques. I recommend 4 square breathing, aka box breathing. Here is how to do it: https://www.healthline.com/health/box-breathing; alternatively, you can try regular deep breathing. - Grounding is another excellent way to activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Grounding makes you focus on things other than your anger. My recommendation is called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. A few more TS3 tips & tricks I'm seeing more and more people jumping on the TS3 nostalgia bandwagon. Even though I've moved onto TS4 two years ago I still do have my TS3 installed with all the custom content I've gathered through years. I know some of the simmers out there can face some issues with lag, corrupted saves etc. @novapotion wrote a great post (which was my inspo btw) with tips&tricks on how to save your TS3. During my journey with TS3 I've learnt some tips&tricks myself that allowed me to play a more or less crash- and corrupt-free game for long periods of time (and I do not have a high end computer, this machine is 11 years old at the moment) and I thought those might be helpful for you.

1. CC Magic - as mentioned in @novapotion post, CC Magic is like a custom CC manager which allows you to put your CC into various categories. At first the tool seems very confusing but once you get a hold of it, it's very easy and believe me, I can't imagine playing my game without it (and I hope one day this amazing tool is released for TS4 as well). CC Magic does the tedious work of merging your CC for you, and it the meantime it creates a backup. Isn't that cool? To add something more, it allows you to set which CC categories you want to be loaded into your game and which not. Playing minimal CC save? Turn off half of your CC! Wants some fancy lookbooks? Turn off all the furniture but leave the clothes on! That’s your choice. 2. .packages or .sims3packs? I personally only use sims3packs for worlds, patterns (!) and part of the lots, and all the rest goes into .package format. You might ask why I'm not friends with them and I'll tell you right away. Sims3packs have ugly habit of often coming with corrupted CC, this mostly happens with lots and worlds, unfortunately. There are some famous items that got spread this way. Also, sims3packs are tedious to install and then uninstall that is why I recommend you to change your CC (please, do not never ever touch patterns, worlds or lots unless you're doing some risky-tricky CAW stuff and you know how to fix your game later) into packages for the ease of use. You can do that with Delphy's Sims3packs Multi Installer. As you might know, after installing your Sims3packs are automatically transferred to your Downloads folder. Feel free to remove them from there and those items were already installed and the game simply made a backup of the files. 3. Compressorizer Redux - with part of the CC you can see that some files have simply ernomous size in MB. For example, you just downloaded a simple t-shirt but out of nowhere it has size of 20mb. Yeah, that's because something is taking up the space uselessly. Run all your CC through Compressorizer Redux and you'll be surprised how much space you just saved. 4. Saves - that was also mentioned by @novapotion not to use 'save' but 'save as...' method. TS3 got pretty famous for corrupting saves after simply 'saving' the game for a couple of times. Of course, you do not have to save your gameplay under a new save everytime, just do it once in a while. I had a habit of saving under a new save when something important happened in my family like birthday, moving sims out etc. it was a must for me to save under a new name. Not to create a mess inside the folder I had a pattern of incorporating numbers into my saves; simply every new save had a number inside, for example my last save is named: Hologram Falls 2 - 10. While number 2 stands for the world's version (I tweaked it in CAW), number 10 means it was 10th clean save. 4. Nraas Mods - if you have Pets installed you might be surprised to see wild horses wandering around your beautiful city of nowhere. Get Nraas Register and save your game from spawning 123 horses and other wild animals in your world. It allows you to set a number of strays wandering around that can cause a bad lag. It allows you to turn off annoying paparazzis and tourists. I'm pretty sure it has an option to set how many pets non-playable families can have, without setting that don't be surprised to see a single sim having 5 pets. It's ea's logic. Overwatch is another must-have for me but it was also mentioned by @novapotion. If you're not a fan of supernatural light that comes with full moon you can turn it off in Overwatch.

[FIC] Luffa: The Legendary Super Saiyan (94/?)

[26 May 234 Before Age. Interstellar Space.]

It was taking too long.

Aboard the Emerald Eye, Zatte stood in the engineering room and held her finger over a button on on of the consoles. Next to the button was a time display, which counted down to zero. When that moment arrived, she would press the button, which would disengage the ship's hyperspatial drive. After that, she would take sensor readings and compare them to other readings she had taken several hours earlier. After that, she would begin laboriously calculating the ship's position relative to her destination.

Normally, all of this would have been done automatically by the ship's computer, but its navigational functions had been sabotaged by King Rehval's agent, Pozet. Pozet's mission was to keep Zatte out of the way while the rest of Rehval's plan fell into place. Zatte had destroyed her hours ago, but she had to admit that the miserable creature had probably succeeded anyway. Pozet's original plan was to confuse the navigational computer by replacing its charts and tampering with its fundamental understanding of the universe. The genius of this had been that the ship appeared to be working properly. It set a course and followed it perfectly. The only problem was that it now believed the shortest distance between two points was an elliptic curve, so the ship simply flew laps in space, unaware that it was getting nowhere. Zatte had solved that problem by disconnecting the navigational system altogether. Her plan was to fly the ship manually, and navigate by the stars, but this was no simple matter. The longer it took, the more Zatte wondered if her efforts made any difference.

At last, the timer reached its end, and Zatte pressed the button just as the display read zero. The engines made a low hum as they reduced power and the ship returned to normal space. She sighed with relief, then activated the ship's sublight thruster. With that, she turned on one heel and left the engine room to go to the observation deck.

Ideally, Zatte would have done all of this from the bridge, where engineering and sensor controls could all be accessed from a central location. But the bridge had been badly damaged during the fight with Pozet, and it would take days of repairs before life support could be restored there. In any event, the ship needed to move through space for a least a half hour so the sensors could get the necessary data for her to calculate her position. There was nothing she could do in the meantime, so she preferred to spend her down time on the observation deck, where she could see the stars for herself from the transparent canopy that surrounded it. She walked past a pair of tables where she had been working on her calculations, and sat down in a lounge chair to stare at the heavens.

The brightest star was the sun of the Pflaume system. She had made that much progress, at least. Her best guess was that it would take four or five more jumps at superluminous speed to bring the ship close enough that she could navigate with greater confidence. Until then, she had to be careful. A single, long trip at superluminous speed would cover more ground, but even a slight error in the math could put the ship far enough on course to delay her, even further. Fuel was also a consideration. Pozet's little "detour" hadn't consumed too much antimatter, but it was enough that Zatte couldn't risk running the engines without being certain they were going the right way.

"I'm trying," Zatte said as she looked up at the star. She wasn't sure if Luffa was even there. Pozet claimed she was, but she might have been lying, or simply mistaken. It was also possible that Luffa was dead by now, or that she had found some other means of escape. Or maybe...

"Maybe you really did buy what King Rehval was trying to sell you," Zatte said to herself. "Maybe the two of you left together. Or you're waiting for me to show up, so you can laugh at me to my face."

She didn't really believe it, but she couldn't entirely dismiss the possibility either. Saying it out loud forced her to confront it. Luffa was too proud, too contemptuous of Saiyan royalty. Even if Luffa had feelings for Rehval, there were too many incompatibilities there. And Rehval had lied about a great many things since Zatte and Luffa had met him. And yet... Zatte still couldn't convince herself that it was impossible.

Luffa's telepathic powers had allowed Zatte to see into her mind. They had tried to cut back on this, since the exchange of unvarnished truths about their innermost thoughts and feelings had caused a rift to form in their marriage. Still, Zatte knew enough to know what her wife truly felt towards her. They were in love, that much was unquestionable, but there were many things that left Luffa unsatisfied. She would have never admitted it, but Luffa had a homesickness to her. It wasn't a longing for any particular place, but she missed her family: not just her parents, but also the family that she might have had with her late husband and unborn son. It frustrated Luffa to be apart from other Saiyans, and it frustrated her to be among them, only to find that they didn't share her lofty ideals. Maybe Rehval had an answer to those issues. In spite of his moral failings, maybe he had something to offer Luffa that Zatte simply couldn't provide.

Perhaps that was what troubled Zatte now. She couldn't truly believe that Luffa would join him, but she couldn't quite shake the possibility that Luffa should join him. If Rehval had some happiness for Luffa, some way to cope with the unspoken longing Luffa felt, and if Luffa rejected this, then what? Zatte also wondered how she herself would handle the same choice. Rehval was trying to secure the future for the Saiyan race. What if he was right? If Luffa refused him, then was she condemning her own people to ruin? No Dorlun could make that kind of choice, but then, Luffa was no Dorlun. Luffa was willing to risk everything for what she thought was right. She was even willing to jeopardize her own people. That idea horrified Zatte, but maybe not as much as the alternative.

She imagined arriving on Pflaume to find Luffa dressed in royal blue, her short black hair framed by some elegant tiara, her arm in the arm of Rehval. Her marriage to Zatte would be effectively over, but the Rehval Dynasty would be preserved for centuries. The Saiyans would prosper and thrive for generations to come. The next Super Saiyan would be born to the royal house, and he would lead his people to an even brighter tomorrow. That made all the sense in the world, but not for Luffa. It just didn't fit her.

On the other hand, Zatte could imagine arriving at Pflaume, and finding Luffa standing over Rehval's broken body. Regicide and interstellar incidents meant nothing to her. The Saiyan Kingdom would declare war on the Federation, and there was no telling what would happen in the aftermath. It might take decades for another Saiyan leader to arise, and their fate as a species would be uncertain at best. Luffa would smile that savage grin of hers, and spit on the body of the Saiyan King. "He had it coming, Zattie," she would say. "And so does anyone who has a problem with that."

That Luffa seemed much more realistic to Zatte. More importantly, that version was the one that excited her, the one that inflamed her passions. No Dorlun could ever do that, but then, Luffa was no Dorlun. Zatte was beginning to wonder if she was much of a Dorlun herself. Her people would never dream of standing with someone so dangerous as a Super Saiyan. If Luffa was willing and able to jeopardize her own species, then what could she do to others? Zatte often wondered if she rationalized Luffa's behavior as a way to justify her own approval of it. She also wondered if she was simply overthinking things.

By the time the ship's sensor scans were complete, Zatte was no closer to an answer than before. She was grateful for the distraction the sensor data would offer, though she knew it would only make her more frustrated in the end. The computer could help her calculate the coordinates, but only up to a certain accuracy. Without the navigational computer to read data and adjust course automatically, the best she could manage would almost certainly be billions of miles off-course. Persistence was her only hope. Each try would bring her closer and closer to the target, and then she would finally reach the goal.

She only hoped that there would be something to find when she got there.

[26 May 234 Before Age. Planet Pflaume.]

There was no trace of Xibuyas or King Rehval on Pflaume City. By now, Luffa could only assume that they had either escaped or been killed in the attempt. Alone, and with nothing better to do, she focused on keeping herself alive.

The battle with her son had severely damaged the city's interior, though they had both been careful not to hit the outer hull. That didn't seem to matter much, as the low groaning she heard suggested that the hull had been taxed to its limits anyway. A city directory on one of the less broken levels showed her the way to the operations center, where a crew of engineers and technicians normally kept the city floating in the Pflaumian atmosphere. This crew had abandoned their posts along with everyone else in the city when Rehval had it evacuated, but Luffa expected to find something she could use at their stations. Information, equipment, supplies, any of these would improve her chances.

The ops center was located near the bottom of the city, requiring Luffa to dig through tons of debris to get at it. Blasting her way through was too risky, so she burrowed down the old fashioned way. To conserve her strength, she powered down to her normal form. Her Super Saiyan power gave her the strength to clear the rubble faster, but speed would get her nowhere if she damaged the very facility she was trying to reach. For an hour, she threw chunks of metal and plastic over her head, occasionally using her ki to cut through the more unwieldy pieces. The hull continued to groan, and she was sorely tempted to transform again, though she could find no practical purpose for it.

"I don't need you," she muttered, addressing her transformed self. Over the years, she had gotten used to the idea that her transformation was a part of her, but never completely. Early on, it had taken a great deal of concentration just to suppress it, and even then it seemed to claw at her from the inside of her skin, demanding to be released. In a way, she was more comfortable in that form. Her senses were sharper, and her body was stronger and faster.

Instead, she curled her tail around her body, and looked at it while she dug. This had been her source of strength throughout her life. The tail was the weakest, most vulnerable point of the Saiyan anatomy. It could be overcome, but the training needed to strengthen the tail was far more difficult than the work needed to build up an arm or a leg. It was a rite of passage for a Saiyan warrior, or at least that was what her mother had taught her. For most Saiyans, overcoming the tail's weakness was the most harrowing challenge of their lives. Defeat that, her mother had promised, and you can defeat anything. For Luffa, training her tail was probably the fifth or sixth greatest ordeal of her life at this point, but it still gave her comfort in times of trouble.

Only, this time, it wasn't helping much. Looking at her tail only reminded her that Rehval had cut his own tail off. He was the king of the Saiyans, and he preferred to mutilate his own body rather than deal with a minor inconvenience. Then he took her own son from her, raised him as his own, and cut off his tail. There were plenty of Saiyans on Planet Saiya who still had their own tails, but it apparently didn't bother them at all to be ruled by a man who would willingly amputate his own. He took children from their mothers, and his subjects meekly tolerated this. It made her sick to her stomach, and as the rage welled up inside her, she wanted to release it in a storm of golden light--!

No. She refused to give in to that. This was a battle, as much of a battle as she had faced with any warrior. Her opponents were time and despair and the environment. She had to stay focused, or they would destroy her, and then King Rehval would be able to claim victory. She refused to give him the satisfaction. And so Luffa denied her Super Saiyan power, refusing to indulge the golden thing that howled from within her.

When she reached the operations center, she was encouraged to find that it was well-reinforced, and had withstood the upper levels collapsing down onto it. It also had very little in the way of security, and she was able to force open a door and reseal it with no difficulty. Luffa found a command terminal and called up a status report. The good news was that the hull had not been breached, and the ops center was designed to be able to function and sustain a crew even if the rest of the city were to be destroyed. That meant this was the safest place to wait for help to arrive.

The bad news was that the city was losing altitude. Planet Pflaume was an ice giant, and while Luffa had a general understanding of its composition, the ops center computers gave her a precise display of her problem. Unlike terrestrial planets, Pflaume had no solid surface. Its core was composed of iron, nickel, and silicates, and this was surrounded by a mantle of "ice"-- a mixture of water, ammonia, and methane. Despite the term "ice", these chemicals were actually hot and fluid because of the immense pressure at that depth Without a solid crust to separate the mantle from the atmosphere, this boundary was arbitrarily defined by a certain pressure: about 1.5 million pounds per square inch. Similarly, the "surface" of Pflaume was arbitrarily defined as the depth where the atmospheric pressure was equivalent to that of a terrestrial planet, about 15 pounds per square inch. Pflaume City floated just below this altitude, and while it was designed to withstand higher pressures, the outer hull would buckle if it sank too far into the planet. The city's propulsion systems were riddled with backups and failsafes to keep it aloft, but these had been damaged during the battle, or Rehval had sabotaged them to make certain she never escaped the city alive. According to the computers, she had very little time left.

She stood up from the command terminal and searched for any food the crew had left behind. The situation was grim, but she saw no reason to die on an empty stomach. There were several crates of emergency rations in a back room, and she devoured these as quickly as she could, using the time to consider her problem.

It was conceivable that she could move the entire city with the power of her Super Saiyan form. She had never tried anything like that before, but she couldn't rule out the possibility of simply carrying the entire city to a safe altitude. The problem was that she would have to concentrate her force onto a single point somewhere along the city's superstructure, and she suspected that it wasn't designed for that. It would be like trying to balance a large animal on the tip of a nail. Even if the nail were impossibly durable, the animal would simply be punctured by the nail and fall.

The ops center was smaller, and she considered trying to cut it apart from the rest of the city, but she wasn't sure if it was designed to support a crew without the rest of the city surrounding it. The temperature outside was well below the freezing point of water, with gusts of wind moving at supersonic speeds. There was no oxygen to breathe in the Pflaumian atmosphere either. As strong as Luffa was, she would be killed almost instantly if she ventured outside the city.

"I'm trying," Luffa said aloud as she drummed her fingers on a table in the ops center break room. None of this would matter unless someone came along to find her. Even if she found a way to keep the city floating, sooner or later something else would go wrong, or she would exhaust her supplies of food and water. The only thing keeping her going was the fact that Zatte was headed for Pflaume City when they parted, and the only thing Rehval had done to stop her was to send that homunculus after her. Pozet was nothing more than a cheap copy of Zatte, and Luffa was completely confident that the copy was no match for the original. She was certain that Zatte had defeated it and was on her way. All Luffa had to do was stay alive in the meantime. She had let Zatte down before, but she could honor her in this respect at least. She could find a way to survive, and then...

Before she could continue on that train of thought, an alarm sounded in the ops center. Luffa leaped up from the table and raced back to the command terminal. She couldn't imagine how things could get any worse, but the status report explained it all very simply.

Two of the propulsion thrusters were gone. For a moment, she thought that the computers were telling her that they no longer functioned, but then she realized that they were literally no longer connected to the hull.

Luffa had no idea how this had happened, but her best guess was that they had been shorn off of their mountings by the atmospheric currents. By now, the city had fallen to an altitude where the pressure was several times more intense than normal. While the hull could withstand that pressure, the weather patterns buffeting the city were now denser, and the winds hit with greater force. Without those thrusters, the city would only sink even faster, and sustain even more damage. There was no time to waste. She had to do something quickly, before--

Suddenly the entire city shook, and she heard a very loud noise. It was already too late. She checked the readout at the command terminal, which confirmed her worst fears. Methane levels had skyrocketed in the past few minutes. The outside atmosphere was leaking into the city, and that could only mean the hull had begun to crack open. The ops center was still safe for the moment, but she only had a few minutes left. She had to do something, and quickly, before--

And then, at last, Pflaume City imploded.

I had a great week mostly working on optimisations and cleanup. A big busy client running a lot of importers should be a little snappier today.

optimisations

Several users have had bad UI hangs recently, sometimes for several seconds. It is correlated with running many downloaders at once, so with their help I gathered some profiles of what was going on and trimmed and rearranged some of the ways downloaders and file imports work this week. There is now less stress on the database when lots of things are going on at once, and all the code here is a little more sensible for future improvements. I do not think I have fixed the hangs, but they may be less bad overall, or the hang may have been pushed to a specific trigger like file loads or similar.

So there is still more to do. The main problem I believe is that I designed the latest version of the downloader engine before we even had multiple downloaders per page. An assumed max of about twenty download queues is baked into the system, whereas many users may have a hundred or more sitting around, sometimes finished/paused, but in the current system each still taking up a little overhead CPU on certain update calls. A complete overhaul of this system is long overdue but will be a large job, so I'm going to focus on chipping away at the worst offenders in the meantime.

As a result, I have improved some of the profiling code. The 'callto' profile mode now records the UI-side of background jobs (when they publish their results, usually), and the 'review threads' debug dialog now shows detailed information on the newer job scheduler system, which I believe is being overwhelmed by micro downloader jobs in heavy clients. I hope these will help as I continue working with the users who have had trouble, so please let me know how you get on this week and we'll give it another round.

the rest

I fixed some crazy add/delete logic bugs in the filename tagging dialog and its 'tags just for selected files' list. Tag removes will stick better and work more precisely on the current selection.

If you upload tags to the PTR and notice some lag after it finishes, this should be fixed now. A safety routine that verifies everything is uploaded and counted correct was not working efficiently.

I fixed viewing extremely small images (like 1x1) in the media viewer. The new tiled renderer had a problem with zooms greater than 76800%, ha ha ha.

A bunch of sites with weird encodings (mostly old or japanese) should now work in the downloader system.

Added a link, https://github.com/GoAwayNow/Iwara-Hydrus, to Iwara-Hydrus, a userscript to simplify sending Iwara videos to Hydrus Network, to the Client API help.

If you are a Windows user, you should be able to run the client if it is installed on a network location again. This broke around v439, when we moved to the new github build. It was a build issue with some new libraries.

fixed some weird bugs on the pathname tagging dialog related to removal and re-adding of tags with its 'tags just for selected files' list. previously, in some circumstances, all selected paths could accidentally share the same list of tags, so further edits on a subset selection could affect the entire former selection

furthermore, removing a tag from that list when the current path selection has differing tags should now successfully just remove that tag and not accidentally add anything

if your client has a pending menu with 'sticky' small tag count that does not seem to clear, the client now tries to recognise a specific miscount cause for this situation and gives you a little popup with instructions on the correct maintenance routine to fix it

when pending upload ends, it is now more careful about when it clears the pending count. this is a safety routine, but it not always needed

when pending count is recalculated from source, it now uses the older method of counting table rows again. the new 'optimised' count, which works great for current mappings, was working relatively very slow for pending count for large services like the PTR

fixed rendering images at >76800% zoom (usually 1x1 pixels in the media viewer), which had broke with the tile renderer

improved the serialised png load fix from last week--it now covers more situations

added a link, https://github.com/GoAwayNow/Iwara-Hydrus, to Iwara-Hydrus, a userscript to simplify sending Iwara videos to Hydrus Network, to the client api help

it should now again be possible to run the client on Windows when the exe is in a network location. it was a build issue related to modern versions of pyinstaller and shiboken2

thanks to a user's help, the UPnPc executable discoverer now searches your PATH, and also searches for 'upnpc' executable name as a possible alternative on linux and macOS

also thanks to a user, the test script process now exits with code 1 if the test is not OK

optimisations:

when a db job is reading data, if that db job happens to fall on a transaction boundary, the result is now returned before the transaction is committed. this should reduce random job lag when the client is busy

greatly reduced the amount of database time it takes to check if a file is 'already in db'. the db lookup here is pretty much always less than a millisecond, but the program double-checks against your actual file store (so it can neatly and silently fill in missing files with regular imports), however on an HDD with a couple million files, this could often be a 20ms request! (some user profiles I saw were 200ms!!! I presume this was high latency drives, and/or NAS storage, that was also very busy at the time). since many download queues will have bursts of a page or more of 'already in db' results (from url or hash lookups), this is why they typically only run 30-50 import items a second these days, and until this week, why this situation was blatting the db so hard. the path existence disk request is pulled out of precious db time, allowing other jobs to do other db work while the importer can wait for disk I/O on its thread. I suspect the key to getting the 20ms down to 8ms will be future granulation of the file store (more than 256 folders when you have more than x files per folder, etc...), which I have plans for. I know this change will de-clunk db access when a lot of importers are working, but we'll see this week if the queues actually process a little faster since they can now do file presence checks in parallel and with luck the OS/disk will order their I/O requests cleverly. it may or may not relieve the UI hangs some people have seen, but if these checks are causing trouble it should expose the next bottleneck

optimised a small test that checks if a single tag is in the parent/sibling system, typically before adding tags to a file (and hence sometimes spammed when downloaders were working). there was a now-unneeded safety check in here that I believe was throwing off the query planner in some situations

the 'review threads' debug UI now has two new tabs for the job schedulers. I will be working with UI-lag-experiencing users in future to see where the biggest problems are here. I suspect part of it will overhead from downloader thread spam, which I have more plans for

all jobs that threads schedule on main UI time are now profiled in 'callto' profile mode

site encoding fixes:

fixed a problem with webpages that report an encoding for which there is no available decoder. This error is now caught properly, and if 'chardet' is available to provide a supported encoding, it now steps in fixes things automatically. for most users, this fixes japanese sites that report their encoding as "Windows-31J", which seems to be a synonym for Shift-JIS. the 'non-failing unicode decode' function here is also now better at not failing, ha ha, and it delivers richer error descriptions when all attempts to decode are non-successful

fixed a problem detecting and decoding webpages with no specified encoding (which defaults to windows-1252 and/or ISO-8859-1 in some weird internet standards thing) using chardet

if chardet is not available and all else fails, windows-1252 is now attempted as a last resort

added chardet presence to help->about. requests needs it atm so you likely definitely have it, but I'll make it specific in requirements.txt and expand info about it in future

boring code cleanup:

refactored the base file import job to its own file

client import options are moved to a new submodule, and file, tag, and the future note import options are refactored to their own files

wrote a new object to handle current import file status in a better way than the old 'toss a tuple around' method

implemented this file import status across most of the import pipeline and cleaned up a heap of import status, hash, mime, and note handling. rarely do downloaders now inspect raw file import status directly--they just ask the import and status object what they think should happen next based on current file import options etc...

a url file import's pre-import status urls are now tested main url first, file url second, then associable urls (previously it was pseudorandom)

a file import's pre-import status hashes are now tested sha256 first if that is available (previously it was pseudorandom). this probably doesn't matter 99.998% of the time, but maybe hitting 'try again' on a watcher import that failed on a previous boot and also had a dodgy hash parser, it might

misc pre-import status prediction logic cleanup, particularly when multiple urls disagree on status and 'exclude previously deleted' is _unchecked_

when a hash gives a file pre-import status, the import note now records which hash type it was

pulled the 'already in db but doesn't actually exist on disk' pre-import status check out of the db, fixing a long-time ugly file manager call and reducing db lock load significantly

updated a host of hacky file import unit tests to less hacky versions with the new status object

all scheduled jobs now print better information about themselves in debug code

next week

Next week is a 'medium size job' week. I would like to do some server work, particularly writing the 'null account' that will inherit all content ownership after a certain period, completely anonymising history and improving long-term privacy, and then see if I can whack away at some janitor workflow improvements.
