I wanna take a moment to just talk about SHEIN for a minute.
Now I'm obviously not defending their poor working conditions and the underpaying of their workers, however what I don't understand is why other people feel the need to demonise and judge people who happen to buy from the brand.
Of course what they are doing is bad, however we cannot pretend that SHEIN is the only business that does shady things. It would be very naive to think that there are any brands out there that work by a code of ethics and have good morals and whatnot. Running a business requires you to do some shady things behind the scenes to keep it up and running, because if they solely prioritised working by moral code they would go bankrupt since it wouldn't be as profitable - that's just how the business world works unfortunately. I'm not trying to be pessimistic I just think it would be unrealistic to want corporations to stand by good morals whilst also trying to make as much profit as possible to cover their costs in order to continue production.
What bothers me is when people act really self-righteous and shun people for buying from the brand - spreading awareness is one thing but actively trying to shame people for buying from some company they don't like in a forceful away especially is not the way to go.
First of all, people can do what they want with their money - who are you to tell them how to spend it at the end of the day? Second, like I said before literally EVERY BRAND HAS DONE SOME DIRTY STUFF BEHIND CLOSED DOORS.
We do not know everything that goes on within the company, only what is revealed to us online or from any source of information. For all we know the brands that claim to be "vegan" or "fair to their workers" or whatever crap they try to say to convince consumers to not feel guilty for buying from their brand (and in most cases make them pay more for the products because of this selling point) could be complete BULLSHIT. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this can be true and people should keep that in mind when evaluating their opinions on something like this.
Now I've known about SHEIN for a few years now, and my family started buying from their brand a year ago. However even before buying from the brand I had already had these thoughts about it when seeing people demonise the company online and then shame others for buying from it. So I don't BELIEVE I am being that biased when saying all this for that reason.
Also, another point I would like to mention is that in a lot of countries, especially in Europe and in my country, there are shortages of materials due to conflict, such as the Ukrainian War, and a whole other multitude of issues that could affect manufacturing and importation/exportation of materials needed to make products to sell internationally. This has caused a significant decrease in the importation of clothing especially, or else the decrease in quality of clothes due to brands perhaps having to improvise by using cheaper materials from other sources and whatnot and also inflation comes into play making the situation worse. This is a major reason as to why MANY, MANY people, especially families, recently have been relying on SHEIN to purchase clothing, or even other products such as household items, cosmetics, personal care items, and so on. My family especially isn't that rich, we would be considered middle class technically but we have other financial priorities aside from buying clothes and whatever. So therefore my mother and our neighbour decided it would be more efficient and beneficial to just start buying from shein, especially because the shipping cost goes down when you spend a certain amount of money - and mind you, my mother and my neighbour aren't the only ones involved in a single order as a lot of the time my neighbour or my mum get their siblings or friends in on it to prevent paying the shipping cost, which in my opinion seems like a smart move. Even my friends do it.
However there is one issue I do have with shein, and it is the absurd amount of packing they use. Lately I have been seeing shein plastic bags on the street sometimes. However aside from me thinking that SHEIN should invest in more environmentally friendly packaging, I think that people should make the effort aswell by reusing the plastic bags or even the cardboard boxes. For instance my family and I reuse these kinds of packaging for storage and it is quite efficient and practical if I do say so myself.
Anyway, to anyone who may be reading this I would appreciate it if you commented on what I've said or just on this subject in general.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk lmao

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

I just want to keep my job even though I don't know how to make memes. Buy our coffee. We've got holiday gifts for the coffee lover in your life.
Awesome Coffee is different because 1. we source our beans directly from small farmers collectives, 2. it's better and fresher than grocery store coffee, and 3. ALL of our profit goes to fight maternal and child mortality in impoverished communities, whereas almost all other coffee makes rich people richer, which is the dumbest thing that can be done with coffee (or other forms of wealth).

wwwo oc painting the sword of the citadel!
The Wizard Smile
paints propaganda murals and portraits by day and creates children's books by night
wrote and cast a spell that erased all visual representation of themselves in retaliation to pictures of themselves existing without consent
the public facing reason to the spell being cast is that they would rather the heroes of the empire they paint to be remembered rather than their own face

I’m sorry I can’t subscribe to ‘Kim doesn’t care about Harry or anyone really’ bc wowwww like he sees the most pathetic miserable stinky creature on the planet and becomes infatuated (either platonically or romantically, whichever floats ur boat) enough to do a silly little dance in a church-slash-nightclub and play a silly little board game even tho it’s got nothing to do with the murder and oh yeah he deadass ditches his precinct to work with (and keep an eye on) this sopping wet man who reeks of dysfunction but gives him hope
don’t even speak to me about the car in the ice I’ll start sobbing uncontrollably he’s so patient and gentle w harry the whole time and heals his morale if u address how bad he fucked up. Kim isn’t a perfect guy for many reasons but he cares about Harry and that’s more than most ppl in game
