I’m really disappointed in cutting whatever the Aoshi miniarc was going to be in RK: The Final. Aoshi comes back looking more put together than he ever has in this movie series, healed from pain and hurt from the past and operating as a true Oniwaban member again -- in fact he’s the Okashira!
We get a scene of him standing in front of the Kamiya dojo’s motto, ‘to invigorate the heart,’ just stepping inside the dojo and essentially viewing the place that is Kenshin’s home. This thing that Kenshin truly believed and embodied. Kenshin, the guy who showed him mercy and pulled him out of misery and set him on a path of healing. And then we get a flashback of Aoshi getting intel back in Kyoto, ‘Blood will rain in Tokyo. And Battousai is involved.’
He gets intel that Kenshin is getting targeted and that’s why he comes with Misao to Tokyo -- to warn Battousai. But it’s too late. The plot has already started. That’s when Aoshi joins the fight -- completely separately from the main Tokyo gang -- he even catches one of the Jinchuu manifestos/calling cards and takes note.
Then he gets hit saving civilians and then. Never returns to the plot. Ever. That’s it. Not even any footage of him healing and coming back. So. it just looks like. Aoshi. Died??? Huh????
I’m really mad they did that to Aoshi because he really deserves so much better. There was some really subtle acting since Aoshi is not Loud. All his acting is done on his face. He barely talks but I think he conveyed so much in the scenes where he visits the Kamiya dojo. Like the movie implies he came all the way from Kyoto to defend Battousai as...a friend?
And I say this knowing they had something in mind for Aoshi because he’s a huge part of the Jinchuu arc in the manga!!! In the manga the Kaoru death fake out happens and everyone is completely off their game totally inundated, lying around moping and inconsolable.
In walks Aoshi. Pulls out the cords in the Kaoru doll.
Figures out everything in about five minutes, alone.
Like a walking info dump.
Aoshi was a really great turning point in the manga because he pulls everybody out of their depression-funk through sheer unadulterated competence to the scene. Then they get Kenshin on his feet and Aoshi is there sailing with him to Enishi’s murder island to fistfight goonies.
Aoshi deserved better in the movies -- just a scene telling us he was ok would have been enough. Just a scene of him meeting Kenshin again. When all of Kenshin’s friends - including Saito - jumps out to help him clear a path to the Enishi in the final act -- Aoshi! Should have! Been there!!

Like many of those, Miike’s take is structured to show camaraderie, honor, compassion, and loyalty in the face of extreme adversity – but it’s clear that the exhilarating 50-minute climax battle is both the director’s forte and his primary passion. Forgoing elaborate and penetrating backstories, many of the intrepid warriors serve simply to embellish the combat, something Kurosawa’s films wisely avoided. Insightful concepts of fate and destiny do emerge in small doses, along with notions of mythology, but the violent visuals and elaborate action sequences are the moments that prevail. Fortunately, Miike’s aptitude in these fields is quite impressive. It is a time of peace in feudal Japan (1840s), but such fragile ideals are threatened by the ascent to power of Lord Naritsugu (Goro Inagaki), a callous and ruthless descendant of the Shogun. Sir Doi (Mikijiro Hira), bound by his status as top Shogun official, knows he must act or the Shogunate and its people will be thrown into turmoil and chaos. Secretly devising a plot to assassinate the evil Lord, Doi turns to noble samurai Shinzaemon Shinada (Koji Yakusho) to gather conscripts for the crucial mission. But with spies, lordless troops, and Naritsugu’s calculating advisor Hanbei (Masachika Ichimura) countering Shinza’s every move, their impossible task grows ever more perilous. The opening scene sets up the preoccupation with bloodshed and violence to come, with a rebellious samurai disemboweling himself – ritualistic harakiri – in typical, Takashi Miike cringe-inducing fashion. Although it may not be his most memorable (or brutal) work, “13 Assassins” ends up being one of his most thrilling and technically proficient actioners. All the elements of Shogun adventure are present: a h
however, it’s that Naritsugu will satisfactorily receive an ending as blood-soaked as his standard conduct. – The Massie Twins Watch free movies and tvshows on VidooTv

eartless tyrant, wise elders, a mature warrior leader, an unsympathetic henchman, an assassination mission, crossed swords, longtime rivals, and an epic 200-man skirmish. The hunt for the last remaining true samurai is not unlike assembling “The Magnificent Seven” (or “Seven Samurai” before that). It’s a quest for forgotten champions and not just the kind for show – ones who can still draw their swords and live by them. Obtaining them is just the start. A perilous trek through unforgiving countryside awaits, with ambushes, ronin mercernaries, political bribes and inevitable battle on the horizon. Their success is governed largely by luck (and a hint of the supernatural).“These days, swords are only good for cutting radishes.” The samurai status no longer insinuates a fighter skilled with weaponry. Honor is everything. This setting mirrors that of “The Wild Bunch,” with men that have outlived their lawlessness and usefulness, despite civilization remaining just as barbaric. Here, villain Lord Naritsugu is especially merciless, deluded, eager to demonstrate his power, and intent on cruelly making examples of those who rebel against his rule. His general vileness and fondness for warfare is a touch overdone. If anything is certain,

13 Assassins (2010)
I don't think I'd ever actually watched Miike; he's a skilled director. For the first two thirds of this I thought I was watching a fairly pedestrian historical epic, but the extended battle sequence at the film's climax won me over. There's just enough build-up of at least some of the titular characters, the action is spectacular, and Miike begins to ask questions in the margins about life, war, and class. I was eventually won over, particlulary by Yusuke Iseya's outrageous Kiga Koyota, as well as the anchoring performance from Kōji Yakusho (who will forever be the man in white from TAMPOPO to me).
