It Happened at the World's Fair Review
Tumblr media
It Happened at the World's Fair expands on what was introduced in Girls! Girls! Girls! (which came out after World's Fair filming started). Taking inspiration from Blue Hawaii, this set of movies are music heavy, have colorful scenery and involve Elvis having to work with child actors. The scenery in this case is the real life world's fair. The 1962 World's Fair in Seattle opened in April and closed in October. With a very limited timeline, it was very important that the movie comes out before the novelty of the fair is gone.
Because this is an actively operating fair, there were many issues involving crowd control. It's a major reason why filming didn't even start in September when most children started school. Naturally, this posed a problem because this meant despite making the movie as fast as possible, it still came out in April 1963 (6 months after the fair closed). Despite the logistical issues, does this movie capture the beauty of the World's Fair while balancing its plot, or does it take a complete nose dive because of the rushed production? Let's find out.
Tumblr media
To start with, I'm not a big fan of the title. I get you need to highlight the World's Fair but it's a bit clunky. Might I suggest "World's Fair Wonders"? This opening song is forgettable. "Beyond the Bend" sounds like a rejected version of "Ridin' the Rainbow" from Kid Galahad. Since those two songs have the same songwriters, I get the idea that they repeat melodies to make up for the extra songs. After all Kid Galahad (at the time the last movie the songwriters worked on) only had 6 songs while this movie now has 10.
Elvis singing while flying a crop duster feels dangerous since it's obvious he's distracted. He looks goofy wearing those goggles and just seems out of place. We immediately get jokes with Elvis being a pilot claiming he can't see the barn. It's a joke as old as the Three Stooges. Elvis is so irresponsible that he flies the plane practically next to the road just to flirt with some girls. They almost crash into some telephone wires and I wonder if Paradise, Hawaiian Style was inspired by this scene when they did the helicopter scene with the dogs.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly for a cliche womanizer, Mike is financially responsible. It isn't much but it does give him some depth. Given how he almost crashed the plane because he was distracted by women, it's impressive that he that it's not his entire character. As to why he doesn't take the money with him, I have no idea. I guess you have to assume that Mike doesn't know Danny had access to his hiding place.
So he goes to meet one of his girlfriends, Dorothy, who we never see again. They're making out on the couch while Dorothy wants to push away to get some iced tea. But Mike insists on keeping the action going. I know out of context "Relax" is a steamy song, but I wonder if it was intentional to make Mike so pushy. Because he's always touching Dorothy while she pushes him away and does everything she can to get away from him. He pulls stuff out of her hands and it's just creepy.
Tumblr media
Her parents come back and I'm very confused on why Dorothy's dad is so upset. Unless we're assuming that they have never met Mike in their entire lives, it's very strange to react like that. At least seeing Mike run for the hills gives us a little chuckle as if to say "yeah he had it coming". The whole scene is just random as we didn't need to emphasize that Mike's a womanizer. The opening scene already tells us that he's a flirt. Since Dorothy doesn't even come back, it just feels like a scene where you go "ok that happened" as it came and went without adding anything.
Mike somehow catches up with a now broke Danny. After multiple bad hands, Danny can't pay his losses to some guys including a Red West cameo. A fight breaks out in the office and I don't think I've ever seen such an ugly scene. That gives it a bit more realism. You don't expect regular guys to have the punch of death. It's supposed to be ugly and brutal and it's not completely unrealistic that Mike and Danny win long enough to get away in their plane, Bessie.
Tumblr media
The duo lands in Sherrington where they find out that because of the many debts they have, the sheriff "boots" their plane. He takes away their keys and gives them the ultimatum: pay the $1200 debt in 2 weeks or their plane goes up for auction to recoup the money. That's a pretty good set up for a conflict. It doesn't involve Elvis having bad luck, but instead relies on his friend having a realistic character flaw in the form of a gambling addiction.
Penniless and stranded, the duo tries to get a free ride into town. For how expensive his suits were, I'm amazed they had Elvis walking down the road in it. At first a car with a couple women stop but they only wanted Mike's lighter. I'm not sure if it was meant to be a joke or a narrative device meant to make the audience feel bad for them. Personally I don't think it does any of that. I didn't think it was funny and the "pain" they endure from the bad luck doesn't last long as they immediately get a ride. It makes me wonder why it was even added since there was no indication that a long period of time passed.
Tumblr media
We get introduced Mr. Walter Ling and his niece Sue-Lin. I love this family. It's obvious that this is an Asian immigrant family which is very realistic for this part of the country and the time period. Despite Mr. Ling's actor being Chinese and Sue-Lin's actress being born in Manila (which is in the Philippines), it's actually not that bizarre. The Philippines does have a Chinese population so you can easily assume that Sue-Lin has some Chinese ancestry. For the time period, I'm so glad that this family is depicted as real people as opposed to stereotypes.
They drive to the World's Fair and I love the real backgrounds we get because of it. Mr. Ling being a delivery driver makes perfect sense since there are plenty of farms around the Seattle area. He can make extra money to be able to afford going to the fair. Sue-Lin has Mike try to explain what she might see and we get a decent song as "Take Me to the Fair" is a whimsical tune. I love Sue-Lin as a character. She isn't a generic cutesy girl character. We get genuine depth by showing that she's able to understand Chinese when her uncle is talking on the phone. When she finds out that uncle Walter has an important job and can't take her to the fair, she's naturally upset. It's not done in an over the top way where she has a complete tantrum. She understands that uncle Walter needs to take the job, but she's of course disappointed. Her realistic reaction only makes you appreciate Mike when he at first begrudgingly agrees to take her.
Tumblr media
Mike's distracted by woman and we get it he's a womanizer. They could've just had him be absentminded because he's worried about finding a way to get money. But I do love how we see Mike and Sue-Lin interact with the real exhibitions such as the monorail. It gives you a special perspective that goes beyond a soundstage and shows just how big this fair is.
We get a Joe cameo as the man who gives Sue-Lin her red dog. I love the montage of them going around the fair. It's a wonderful showcase of what was there in case the viewer never had a chance to go and for younger generations who might not even know about the fair. Plus we get to see Mike warm up to Sue-Lin like he's taking his own daughter or niece to the fair. I can believe a change like that can happen in a short period of time. Unlike a romantic relationship, you don't need to have a lot happen to get along with a child. And it's not like Mike hated Sue-Lin as they got along on the truck ride.
Tumblr media
It's really incredible to see just how much you can do at the fair for what doesn't seem like a lot of money. If only this was made earlier as it would've been a great way to promote the movie. After one too many treats, Mike takes Sue-Lin to the fair's nurse station. While Sue-Lin's being treated, Mike starts talking to himself and looks distractingly tan. When the nurse comes in and sees this he naturally can't help but flirt with her.
He pretends to have something in his eye and it's shocking how unapologetically pushy he is. I love how Nurse Warren rightfully calls him out on this. You really feel uncomfortable for her since it's relatable to have a man flirt unwarranted. Sue-Lin feels better so the two of them leave. Mike looks smitten and I have no idea what's meant to be so special about Nurse Warren. Because unless he thinks she's just playing hard to get, they have literally no chemistry.
Tumblr media
I love this song. "They Remind Me Too Much of You" is such a beautiful ballad that if it wasn't for the fact that his first interaction with Nurse Warren went horribly, it would be the perfect ballad. We never see a quiet moment like this in any Elvis movie. In fact this is the first time outside of the opening song where Elvis isn't even singing out loud. He's only thinking about it as Sue-Lin sleeps. Not a single word is spoken as we take in this moment of Mike reflecting about his feelings. It's easily the best scene in the movie as it shows that Mike is so much more than a womanizer.
Mr. Ling returns to pick up Sue-Lin and you really get the idea that Mike loved "chaperoning" her. Sure he does say out loud to Danny that he was more happy about meeting Nurse Warren, but I honestly think the movie should've skipped the romance altogether. Mike had more chemistry with Sue-Lin in that one montage than he ever had with any other woman. The scenes with Dorothy and Nurse Warren only shows how shallow he is with women. With Sue-Lin we see a different side of Mike where he grows to care for Sue-Lin like she's his own family member.
Tumblr media
Danny manages to swing the duo a temporary home that was set up for people attending the fair. We get introduced to Barney "yoo hoo" Thatcher who Danny uses as his pigeon to get money. Mike talks about how to get with Nurse Warren and again all I can think of is just how shallow he is. Even if he does succeed, it doesn't feel satisfying here because it doesn't feel like he'll change.
"One Broken Heart for Sale" is such an unnecessary song. We don't need to be bashed over the head with the obvious fact that Mike is horny for the nurse. Mike doesn't even deserve to say his heart is broken. You can't say your heart is broken just because someone you just met didn't reciprocate your pushy behavior. It doesn't add anything and just feels so out of place since you also have the other old men magically know what he's singing. Just shows how even the best songwriters can have duds if they're not in the right context. It's a shame because Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott have had great successes with Elvis.
Tumblr media
We cut to the next day as Mike has a ploy to get Nurse Warren's attention. He pays a boy, played by an uncredited Kurt Russell, a quarter to kick him in the shin. I love how as Elvis screams in pain, you can see people in the background turn to see what happened. That's a sign that this was a genuine crowd and only makes the setting feel real. Given the extent of the actual injury I'm more amazed that the nurses didn't immediately call for an ambulance. If Mike supposedly can't walk properly that could possibly be a sign of a broken leg. Mike says he blacked out which if you're a nurse is a red flag. The head nurse even has him walk on it and you just have to wonder why they're doing this. They don't know Mike is exaggerating so they're doing a horrible job of insuring his safety when the head nurse suggests Nurse Warren escorts him home.
As Nurse Warren shows no sense of urgency we get pretty obvious rear screen projections as the two talk. Why are we doing this? Nurse Warren doesn't know that Mike's faking so why is she taking her sweet time getting him home? In fact, when Mike again lies about blacking out, instead of calling for an ambulance she instead helps him up to the real rotating restaurant. Why? A professional would've immediately called for an ambulance. You would never risk moving someone who feels that dizzy as you would risk causing them further injury.
Tumblr media
His ploy seems to work though since Nurse Warren is in no rush to leave the restaurant. In fact based on the passage of time they've been in that restaurant for hours. Mike even sings a ballad about how he's in love with Nurse Warren. "I'm Falling in Love Tonight" is such a generic ballad that I have no idea why I'm supposed to support this budding romance. Nurse Warren falling for Mike is something I don't buy at all. If anything it's showing that so long as you get the girl, you can be as pushy and manipulative as you want. That's a terrible moral to have for what's supposed to be a family film. It'd make more sense if she's just going along with this until it all blows up in his face, but that isn't at all how it's presented
I do love how the extras have their own charm to the movie. These were legit patrons that had no idea of what's happening. Them clapping after Mike's song was real and I love it because it shows just how weird it is to have someone burst into song in a restaurant. Mike's ploy immediately falls apart as the boy from earlier comes back. He kicks Mike in the shin and I love the old man who's just like "oh my God what's happening". He looks realistically concerned.
Tumblr media
As Mike tries to apologize to Nurse Warren, Sue-Lin rushes up to him. She tearfully tells him that her uncle didn't come back from a job. Given how she waited from 9 am to 3 pm for Mr. Ling to return, I'd say Sue-Lin handled the situation very well for a child. You always allow for some delay if someone's traveling because you never know what would happen. When it became obvious that something had to have happened, it's natural for her to be very concerned.
This is the most realistic acting from a child I've ever seen. A 7 year old girl possibly losing her only guardian is terrifying situation to be in. It really says a lot that she didn't go one of her neighbors since they were living in one of those temporary homes as well. In fact, I'm amazed that not a single adult noticed her wandering the fair alone and most likely in distress. It's like the movie wants us to believe Mike's the only adult in this movie who Sue-Lin can even trust.
Tumblr media
He takes Sue-Lin home and the movie immediately got better again. Mike explains that he took every measure to make sure people know he has Sue-Lin. I love this as he could've easily been the buffoon that has no idea how to tell anyone that he's watching a child who would otherwise have no one. It seems like it's relatively late at night, so while you can question if Mike's doing the right thing, it's at least better to have Sue-Lin be in a safe space than drive around trying to find the authorities.
We get a sweet scene where Sue-Lin dresses in her traditionally Chinese pajamas. Mike even sings "Cotton Candy Land" as a lullaby. In the context that it's in, I know the lullaby is meant to be sweet, but I only get a creepy vibe to it. I'm not sure why but to me Mike singing it in a quiet voice and the music just makes me feel more scared than soothed. The sandman doesn't feel like this whimsical creature but more like a monster. I'm sure that was unintentional as I don't think it's a common opinion to feel that way.
Tumblr media
After pretending to be sick so Mike can make up with Nurse Warren, she arrives to check out Sue-Lin. It's a bit distracting how the studio light casts a big shadow. You know that little night lamp isn't doing that. Sue-Lin tells Nurse Warren the truth and I'm amazed Nurse Warren didn't immediately raise an eyebrow. Then again this is the same woman who took what she believed to be an injured Mike up to a rotating restaurant when he said he was about to blackout. I can't take any expertise or authority a character like her should have seriously.
The movie clearly has no idea on how to handle their relationship as Nurse Warren starts to fall for Mike again when he serenades her. "A World of Our Own" is so unnecessary. Mike being nice to Sue-Lin and taking care of her doesn't eliminate the fact that he was pushy and manipulated her. The whole relationship just feels forced as I don't think this couple has any chemistry. Again there's nothing about Nurse Warren that makes her different since there's a clear difference between playing hard to get and having no interest. While the movie wants to tell you that she's the former, you really know that it's the latter.
Tumblr media
Danny comes back from his card games completely drunk. You would think this would tell Nurse Warren that Sue-Lin living with Mike is a bad idea. But no. It's not even a thought that was uttered as she just drives home. How? She has the authority to report this to the authorities since Danny being drunk can lead to terrible consequences. Especially when you have a child in the home.
Danny meanwhile meets up with a guy named Vince who offers Danny a deal to fly up to Canada. Oh yeah they had a debt to repay. I almost forgot about that since that plot took a back seat to the conflict of Mike caring for Sue-Lin and the conflict of Mike getting with Nurse Warren. Vince outright agrees to pay them the whole amount that would allow the duo to get their plane back. So naturally you assume he's going to be the villain which can't possibly be a good thing since he's been introduced way too late in the movie to really do anything important.
Tumblr media
Mike comes back from asking about Sue-Lin's uncle. We get a sweet moment where he watches her color before playing "How Would You Like to Be?" with the windup clowns. I love the song as it does serve a purpose. Mike is trying to cheer up Sue-Lin and it of course makes sense that Sue-Lin only sings along once she feels better. These aren't complicated lyrics to try to have a young girl learn so it feels realistic for her to join in. Her dancing along with Mike is sweet but the smirk he has does feel out of place. I would've used a different shot as out of context you don't think he's looking at a 7 year old girl.
A woman from Child Services arrive to take Sue-Lin away. Because after a couple days, now it's a problem for Sue-Lin to be here. The woman says "an abandoned child is automatically a ward of the state" which is a lie. Sue-Lin wasn't immediately taken by the police who had to have known she was with Mike. This whole plot point is terrible as it doesn't properly set up why now all of a sudden is it a problem. The woman claims that it was Nurse Warren who made the complaint which you immediately know isn't true. If Nurse Warren genuinely believed that Sue-Lin wasn't safe, that would've been conveyed in the previous scene. This is just terrible drama meant to turn Mike off of her. Also there's no way that woman from Child Services would straight up tell Mike who made the complaint. That would put the person who made the complaint at risk of retaliation.
Tumblr media
This whole situation is gets even worse as for someone who's supposed to be in Child Services, she can't even keep track of one child. I understand that Child Services has a very legitimate job, but this movie doesn't paint them in a good light at all. Instead of taking this seriously, I just see Child Services as a joke in this movie. They're only now making a stink about custody of a child when not even the police mentioned it. Instead of making it a forced situation from the start, it was only "suggested" so I have no reason to buy this organization as legitimate. I can only think of the much later film Lilo & Stitch as it does a better job of setting up why Lilo could be taken out of the home.
So we have Mike now desperately trying to find Sue-Lin as he's the only one who would know where she could be. As irrational as it is that he wouldn't tell authorities where she would be, I 100% get it in this situation. The authorities have done nothing to prove that they are reliable. In fact, if Mike didn't find her, you already know Sue-Lin would just runaway again. It's really sad that a child feels more safe with Mike than the authorities meant to protect abandoned children. It's also frustrating that because of the situation, Mike's now being painted as if he's abducting her.
Tumblr media
Mike and Sue-Lin manage to make it to the airport just as Nurse Warren arrives trying to find them. She tries to explain what happened but he naturally doesn't want to hear it. Mike is just so done with everyone as he immediately finds out about the smuggling scheme. I know that Vince being a criminal was going to be this twist but wow they really just dropped that fur smuggling scheme that quickly. It doesn't even give that much importance or tension as Sue-Lin actually does something by biting Vince's finger when he's holding them at gunpoint. A fight breaks out and again it's ugly. Just like a real fight between non-professionals. Mike at this point is running on pure adrenaline so it makes perfect sense for him to win. But it's just so anti-climatic because really? This is what you've been building Danny's subplot up to? This plot element of Danny being involved in a fur smuggling scheme is introduced and resolved so quickly that there's no point in it even existing.
They get caught by the police and it turns out Danny was the one who contacted Child Services. This is a stupid twist as there's no way he could've fooled the woman from Child Services into thinking he's a woman. Also why's he now deciding that Sue-Lin was a problem when he didn't want her being there in the first place? It's not like he cared about Mike's feelings for her.We then find out that Mr Ling was only 20 miles south of the town and was in an emergency hospital. 20 miles is not that far so I have no idea why it took them all these days to figure this out. If Sue-Lin knew where he was going that she knew he should be back by certain point, what's the mystery here? It isn't like uncle Walter got kidnapped and no one knows where he could've been taken. Again a very anti-climatic ending for something that took up a big chunk of the movie.
Tumblr media
We time skip to Mike applying to NASA as he walks with Nurse Warren through the fairgrounds. He sings about how this is a happy ending with a very fitting title "Happy Ending". Danny and Sue-Lin with her uncle Walter are nowhere to be seen to share this moment and absolutely nothing was earned. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't think this couple is likable and Mike was better off forgetting about her. It isn't unrealistic to realize "hey my priorities have changed. Getting the girl doesn't matter to me anymore. All that matters is that Sue-Lin is safe." That's character growth.
But no this is an Elvis movie and regardless of whether it makes sense for them to be together, he has to get the girl. It just makes you wonder why we spent all this time on something only for it to be completely hand waved like it was nothing. Almost like they completely ran out of time with writing the script and just had to say "everything is magically resolved no matter how ridiculous it is".
Tumblr media
This movie clearly tried to do too much and it shows. You have the conflict of Mike and Danny being broke and needing to get the money for their plane; Mike wanting to get with Nurse Warren and having to deal with her being mad at him because he lied; Sue-Lin's uncle going missing and people thinking she needs to go to Child Services; and a last minute fur smuggling scheme. None of these plots were resolved in a way that feels like thought was put into it. They were only resolved because it's an Elvis movie that has to have a happy ending as opposed to naturally fixing them. As a result, the whole film is messy and is a case of wasted potential. It seriously needs a rewrite to smooth out everything that doesn't connect together well.
That being said, I give this film a 7/10. I can respect the attempt at giving an Elvis character depth, but I still think more work needed to be done. I do recommend watching it simply because the fairground scenes act as a time capsule of what life was like back then. It's just unfortunate that the movie was rushed because it was a great concept. No matter how you look at it, you wouldn't have been able to get this movie out in time to promote the fair. You can't film before the fair opens because then you have nothing to serve as a background since it's being built. You definitely can't film it in April because then you have to worry about the massive crowds since it's a total novelty and you can't do what the directors chose to do and film near the fair's ending because then you won't be able to get it out in time to promote it. It's a lose-lose situation which is a horrible shame but I at least respect the fact that they tried doing something like this.
AN: Thank you to my discord bestie snaileyinsheff for suggesting this movie and providing input. Also shout out to @hooked-on-elvis for providing the link that I used to watch the movie.

Tumblr media
‘‘Take me to the fair, don't know anywhere I would rather be. Let's go to the fair, we'll walk hand in hand, through Tomorrow Land; only you and me. I wanna see everything, do everything. While we're doin' it all, I'll buy the peanuts and popcorn; we'll have us a ball. You can spend my pay, crush me in the crowds, I'll be in the clouds; honey, I don't care, but take me to the fair.’’
‘‘Voila, all done!’’ you smiled brightly at the six year old girl in front of you, turning her around so she could face the mirror in the bathroom of your small apartment, showing her the two braided pigtails she had been asking for you to do since the moment she opened her eyes this morning. Her eyes twinkled at the red ribbons you put at the beginning and end of your creation, the contrast of the bright color looking beautiful with her black hair. ‘‘Not too tight?’’ You asked her as you tapped the top of her head softly and she shook her head with a bright smile, the long braids swinging with her movements.
You moved to Seattle a year ago to attend the university you’ve always dreamed of, but life in the big metropolitan wasn’t exactly cheap so you applied for several jobs as soon as you were settled in your apartment. When you came across Walter Ling’s ad for a baby sitter for his niece, you immediately called the phone number listed at the bottom─you’ve always loved children and mr. Ling sounded desperate on the other end of the line. He was an apple farmer that often had to travel back and forth to make deliveries and whatnot and when he shamefully admitted that he’d let his six year old niece stay at home alone sometimes, you came over to his house that same day. Sue-Lin loved you the second she laid eyes on you and her uncle hired you on the spot. Whenever you’d babysit her, you’d usually be over at the Ling household or take her outside to do whatever she wanted to do whenever she didn’t have school to attend. When spring break came around and mr. Ling asked if Sue-Lin could stay at your place for the week because he’d be gone for work, you couldn’t say no. You had a few projects that you’d need to finish before break ended, but it wasn’t like you wouldn’t procrastinate them if you weren’t babysitting, anyways.
Along with spring break, came the Century 21 Exposition─or better known as Seattle’s World Fair. People from both Seattle and outside of it came to the city to flock the fair, learning about its space and science theme, hoping for job opportunities and whatnot. While you loved looking at the all the interesting science projects and so on, both you and Sue-Lin were more looking forward to the rides and food.
‘‘Look at the monorail!’’ Sue-Lin yelled from the passengers’ side of your car as you parked the vehicle, her small finger pointed to the entrance of the steps that led up to the fair’s monorail. You laughed as you killed the engine, taking off your seatbelt. ‘‘You can’t even see it yet, silly,’’ you grinned at her, getting out of the car. She crawled over the seat and got out at your side, smiling brightly at you. ‘‘But I already know it’s beautiful,’’ she stuck her tongue out playfully and you laughed, closing the door before slipping your hand into her smaller one. ‘‘You are more beautiful,’’ you mimicked her actions by sticking out your tongue and she laughed. Both of you went back and forth on who was more beautiful as you walked to the stairs of the futuristic train that would take you to the fair. You and Sue-Lin were talking and laughing, swinging your intertwined fingers back and forth in between you and you didn’t notice two men at the bottom of the stairs, until you bumped into one of them.
‘‘Oh, excuse me,’’ you apologized, looking at the brown haired man with a small smile on your face. He barely looked at you, mumbling something under his breath as he just dug his hands deeper into the pockets of his worn out brown leather jacket, turning away from you. You raised your eyebrows, reminding yourself that Sue-Lin was next to you, but oh how you wanted to give him a piece of your mind. The other man cleared his throat and you looked at him, your facial features softening a little bit─dear Lord. This man was absolutely gorgeous.
‘‘Sorry about my friend, miss. He’s in a bad mood today,’’ he told you, ignoring his friend who shot him an angry glare. You chuckled softly and nodded, the man’s blue eyes boring into yours shamelessly as a smile was tugging at his lips. ‘‘It’s no problem. Have a good day,’’ you told them, mostly the dark haired and blue eyed man rather than the other, but you were still trying to be polite. You and Sue-Lin turned back around and started walking up the steps to catch the next train, both of you ready to take on the fair by storm─and all its delicious snacks.
‘‘Excuse me!’’ You heard a voice yell out behind you and you came to a halt at the top of the stairs, reaching the monorail’s platform. You turned around and looked at the blue eyed man that had followed you up the stairs, smiling confidently at you. ‘‘Are you girls going to the fair?’’
‘‘Yes!’’ Sue-Lin exclaimed excitedly, tugging at your hand as she looked up at him with wide eyes and a bright smile. ‘‘Mind for one more to tag along?’’ He grinned, obviously meaning himself. Was this stranger really inviting himself for a day at the fair with you and the six year old girl you were babysitting? Even though he was absolutely gorgeous and his lips looked extremely kissable, he was still a man and you knew better than to trust one so soon. Sue-Lin looked at you with hopeful eyes─apparently you weren’t the only one who thought he was handsome─but you ignored her silent pleading and looked back at the man in front of you, putting on your most friendly smile. ‘‘I’m sorry, but we were kind of planning on having a… girls day,’’ you lied, giving him a nod before you turned around and walked toward the monorail, before you’d give in to your urges for some male company and let him stay. Sue-Lin giggled behind her hand as she hopped on the monorail with you, tugging you to the back. The train was full of people and you gave Sue-Lin one of the empty spots on the back bench, standing in front of her by the large windows. You didn’t notice the handsome stranger making his way into the monorail as well, sneaking into the spot next to Sue-Lin that a girl happily gave up for him. It was probably those damned baby blues.
‘‘Hello,’’ Sue-Lin whispered with a giggle as the monorail started moving forward, making you grab onto one of the poles so you wouldn’t fall flat on your face, or ass. When Sue-Lin looked over at you and saw you were enjoying the view and had no idea that she was talking to the man, she leaned in closer to him to continue whispering. ‘‘I have never seen her with a boyfriend,’’ she told him, hiding her mouth behind her hand to be absolutely sure you wouldn’t overhear her gossiping about you. ‘‘You should buy her popcorn, oh, or cotton candy! She likes that,’’ she nodded at him with big eyes, and he couldn’t help but laugh softly, pursing his lips to muffle the sound. ‘‘Does she like that, or you?’’ he asked playfully, poking her cheek and she let out a loud giggle. You turned around and the smile you wore was smacked right off of your face when you noticed the man from before giggling with Sue-Lin. You reached your hand out to her, gently pulling you in front of her as you looked at him. ‘‘Sir, I already told you, we’re fine just the two of us. Enjoy your day,’’ you said sharply, placing your arms over Sue-Lin’s small shoulders, turning back to the view of the fair coming closer in sight. Sue-Lin giggled and turned her head back to the man, putting her thumbs up. ‘‘Look at the view,’’ you told her, gently grabbing her chin to make her face forward again.
You could feel his eyes burning on you the entire time you were on the monorail and you couldn’t be more grateful when the train came to a stop, a voice through the intercom informing the passenger’s they had arrived at the fair. Sue-Lin slipped her hand in yours as she gave the man another wave before tugging you along─you looked over your shoulder once more, silently cursing the gorgeous stranger when he gave you a little finger wave and a smirk. Something told you this wouldn’t be the last time you’d see him.
You decided to push any lingering thoughts about him out of your mind as much as possible and enjoy the day with Sue-Lin. Since you had the biggest soft spot for the girl ever, you went on every ride she was allowed in with her and probably played every money grabbing game there was, both of you not being very good at them. You decided to check out the expositions for a little bit, but the both of you got bored with it rather fast and went back outside to the fair to indulge in more games and more food.
‘‘Okay, you sit here and guard this spot with your life!’’ You told the smiley girl in front of you as you sat her down at a picnic table near a few food stands. She gave you a determined nod and two thumbs up, smiling happily as you kissed her forehead and walked to one of the food stands to get the both of you some food. You were too busy ordering and making small talk with the girl that was ringing up your order, not noticing Sue-Lin had wandered away from the picnic table and to one of the game stands, admiring a very big red stuffed dog that was the main prize of the game. The man of the booth smiled at her, asking her if she wanted to play.
‘‘I don’t have money,’’ the dark haired girl pouted as she sighed defeatedly, staring up at the stuffed animal with lost hope. Before the vendor could turn away, the handsome stranger from before stepped next to Sue-Lin, handing the man in the booth a dollar. ‘‘Mr. stranger!’’ Sue-Lin yelled excitedly, making some people look at the two with questioning looks on their faces. The blue eyed stranger took the balls the booth owner handed to him and got through his knees, smiling at Sue-Lin. ‘‘You can call me Mike, ‘kay? What’s your name?’’ he asked sweetly, handing her two balls. She squeezed them in her hands and smiled brightly. ‘‘Okay, mr. Mike. My name is Sue-Lin,’’ she told him and he chuckled, nodding as he picked her up and put her on the edge of the game booth, letting her throw the two balls he gave her. She barely even managed to reach the milk bottles that needed to be knocked down and as he saw her longing eyes at the red dog, he chuckled and threw the rest of the balls. Sue-Lin cheered in excitement as he knocked the bottles down, watching the vendor take down the dog with bright eyes. She wrapped her tiny arms around the stuffed animal as Mike put her back down on the ground─she practically disappeared behind the size of her prize.
‘‘It’s bigger than you are, tiny!’’ he laughed and she giggled, looking up at him. ‘‘Let’s go find your mommy,’’
‘‘She’s not my mommy,’’ she informed him, but followed nonetheless as he placed a gentle hand on the back of her shoulder, guiding her back to the food stands where he saw her running from. ‘‘She’s my babysitter. Her name is Y/N,’’ she smiled brightly, wanting you to meet Mike and be friendly to him. She didn’t know why you hadn’t invited him to come along with the both of you─after all, he won her the prize she wanted, so he was pretty much the perfect human being in her eyes.
‘‘Y/N, huh? Pretty name,’’ he mumbled to himself as he looked around the crowd, trying to find you in it. As they reached the picnic table and Sue-Lin realised you weren’t there, she tugged on his hand. ‘‘I think she went to see some expositions,’’
‘‘Without you?’’ he questioned, raising an eyebrow as he got through his knees, looking at her. ‘‘I don’t think so, tiny. She’s probably looking for you,’’
Sue-Lin squeezed the red dog against her a little, shaking her head confidently. ‘‘She told me she went inside and would be right back, but maybe you and I should go get her,’’ she said, a small smile tugging at her lips mischievously. As Mike sighed softly and nodded, standing up straight, she slipped her hand into his and tugged on it softly. As he looked down at her, she gave him the biggest and cutest puppy eyes she could muster. ‘‘Can we eat something first? I’m hungry,’’ she pouted and Mike let out another sigh, laughing as he gave her a playful eye roll, nodding his head as he took the stuffed animal from her, carrying it before he took her to the nearest food stand. And then another one, and another one, and another one…
You, on the other hand, weren’t so relaxed─oh no, you were in absolute panic. Every horror situation that you could think of kept playing in your mind the second you saw Sue-Lin was not at the picnic table where she should be. You were afraid something might’ve happened to her, or someone took her. Mr. Ling was absolutely going to kill you, firing your dead body on the spot. An hour went by and you must’ve circled the huge fair for about five times already, describing Sue-Lin to people and asking if they had seen her. You went to probably every information and help desk the fair had, informing them about a missing girl, but even though they gave out information through the fair’s speakers, Sue-Lin still didn’t seem to realise just in how much panic she put you through.
‘‘Sue-Lin, we really have to go and find your babysitter now. Five more minutes and we’ll have all of Seattle looking for you,’’ he told her as was holding the waffle she insisted of having in front of her face, her little mouth munching on it casually. People were looking at them know, recognizing Sue-Lin from the description that was put out through the speakers and he knew exactly how this looked like. You already thought he was some kind of weirdo, so he needed to find you before you’d think he had kidnapped Sue-Lin. She sighed as she swallowed her bite, nodding as she jumped off the bench they were on, pushing away the waffle from her. Mike handed it to a random person, quickly tugging Sue-Lin along to the information desk they said you were waiting at.
You were in tears now, ignoring the girl behind the desk that was trying to calm you down. The fair was huge and you had absolutely no idea if you were ever going to find your cute little, pigtailed companion of the day. The girl behind the desk snapped you out of your emotions as she pointed at Sue-Lin coming into a view, tugging that blue eyed stranger from the monorail along with her. You gasped as you ran over to her, picking her up as you squeezed her tightly.
‘‘Oh my God, you’re alive,’’ you breathed out softly, leaning back to look at her face. You blinked away some tears and gave her a stern look. ‘‘You can’t just walk off like that, Sue-Lin Ling! Do you have any idea how scared I was? I’ve been looking everywhere for you,’’ you told her, trying to sound strict, but you sounded more relieved that she was back and in one piece. A blush crept up her cheeks as she pouted a little, swinging her arms around your neck as she apologized in your ear. You sighed deeply as you rubbed her back, thanking the girl behind the desk as she announced through the speakers that the missing child was found.
‘‘I’m really sorry, miss. She was with me,’’ Mike spoke up and you turned to look at him, your fierce eyes squinting at him. You put Sue-Lin down, holding onto her hand, pointing an accusing finger at the man in front of you. ‘‘And you didn’t think to look for me? I’ve been running around in circles like a fool for an hour and what have you been doing exactly? There’s a million information desks here, you couldn’t have gotten it through your thick skull to have them call out for me?!’’ You yelled at him, people looking at you as if you had lost your mind but you didn’t even care at this point.
Mike stayed calm, a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as Sue-Lin folded her hands together, pleading him not to say anything. ‘‘We ate some food. Sue-Lin was hungry, she can be very persuasive, ya know,’’ he said, getting an angry glare from the little girl next to you.
‘‘It’s my fault, miss Y/N! Please don’t yell at mr. Mike. He’s really nice and he won me a prize!’’ she exclaimed, holding out her hands to the dog Mike was still holding. ‘‘Can he come with us to the big scary building?’’ She asked, pointing up at the Space Needle you promised to take her to before she took the stuffed animal he handed to her as he got through his knees to be at the same height as her, looking up at you. ‘‘I’m very nice, miss Y/N,’’ he smiled, fluttering his eyelashes at you. ‘‘And I’ll pay for the food,’’
You almost scoffed right in his face, crossing your arms as you stuck out your hip, looking at the pair in front of you. Sue-Lin pouted heavily at you, folding her hands together once more as she squeezed the stuffed animal in between her little arms. You rolled your eyes and shook your head a little bit. Sue-Lin obviously wanted you to give this man your attention and you knew she wouldn’t let it rest until you’d say yes. ‘‘Fine!’’ you exclaimed, wanting them to stop looking at you like that. As Mike stood up straight again, you looked at him as you took Sue-Lin’s hand in yours again. ‘‘And you’re definitely paying,’’
The Space Needle was probably one of the most popular attractions at the fair─it had an amazing view of the entire fair and city no matter what floor you were on, but since you had to queue so long for it and it was getting later, the three of you agreed on going to the revolting restaurant on the top floor straight away. After chewing all day long, Sue-Lin was still hungry. As you were seated in the restaurant, the sun had gotten down, stars painted against the dark night sky. It was a gorgeous view and even though you wouldn’t admit it, the view across from you at the table wasn’t so bad either. Sue-Lin insisted on sitting next to Mike, drawing on a placemat the waitress put down for her and he was helping her. The sight made your heart clench but as he grinned at you so confidently, you had to remind yourself that he was still a man, and a stranger. And he seemed like the type that knew he was good looking, using it to his advantage more than he should.
‘‘So, what do you do, Mike?’’ you asked him after you finished your meals, taking a sip of the coffee you had ordered. Sue-Lin had trouble keeping her eyes open, leaving her half eaten desert for what it was as her head fell against Mike’s arm, eyes drooping shut. He chuckled softly and gently wrapped his arm around her shoulder, letting her lay against his side instead. ‘‘I’m a pilot,’’ he told you as he looked back at you, not shying away from the intense eye contact. You hummed softly, smiling as you were genuinely interested in his profession. ‘‘What airline?’’ you asked, putting your coffee down. He chuckled softly, resting his arm on the back of Sue-Lin’s seat. ‘‘My own, you could say,’’ he said and you gave him an impressed nod, making him laugh softly. ‘‘Crop dusting pilot. Along with my friend, who you met earlier today, but I’ve been thinking about quitting. Him that is, not flying,’’ he said, sighing softly and you leaned your elbows on the table, chin on your knuckles. ‘‘I want bigger and better things and he’s not ready for that yet,’’ he told you and you nodded your head a little bit, smiling as you pointed outside. ‘‘Why reach for the stars if you can reach for space? The fair is the perfect place for it,’’ you chuckled and he let out a soft laugh, nodding as he took a sip of his coffee. He seemed to be in thought for a little bit until his eyes twinkled when they met yours again. ‘‘How about we go to the NASA exposition that opens tomorrow?’’
You widened your eyes a little at him, lowering your hands. ‘‘Oh.. Well, you know, I’m babysitting Sue-Lin all week and I have school projects to work on that are due by next week, so..’’
‘‘I wanna go,’’ Sue-Lin mumbled as she slowly opened her eyes, rubbing them a little bit as she smiled at you and Mike. Mike smiled back at her, squeezing her shoulder. ‘‘See! She wants to go,’’  he said, hope in his eyes. Sue-Lin leaned closer to his ear, cupping her hand over her mouth. ‘‘She never does her school work in time,’’ she whispered to him, though loud enough for you to hear and you rolled your eyes, laughing softly. Mike grinned and looked at you as Sue-Lin pouted and fluttered her eyelashes at you, hugging Mike tightly as if she had known him for years. He gently put his head on top of hers, pouting now as well. The sight was cute and you laughed at it, but you were stubborn and softly shook your head, sighing softly.
‘‘I’m sorry, Mike, but.. no,’’ you said seriously, giving Sue-Lin a warning look as she opened her mouth to protest. ‘‘I’m just not ready for.. anything that comes close to a relationship or whatever it is what you’re looking for,’’ you told him, quickly grabbing your purse from the seat next to you as you got up. Sue-Lin silently got up, but you could see in her eyes that she was bummed out at the fact that you just turned down her new best friend.
‘‘How about a friendship?’’
You looked at the blue eyed man, who was oh so gorgeous with those stupidly kissable lips and perfectly slicked back hair. Your heart wanted to say yes, yes, yes! But you decided to be rational this time. You had run into dozens of men like Mike in your life and every time you had listened to your heart, they broke it into a thousand pieces and moved on to the next one. You took Sue-Lin’s hand into yours, giving the man in front of you a soft smile. ‘‘I’m sorry, Mike,’’ you told him, trying to soften the blow by sounding sweet. ‘‘I hope you will get the change you’ve been looking for. And thank you.. for today,’’ you gave him a little nod before you slowly turned around and took Sue-Lin to the elevators. Sue-Lin looked over her shoulder, waving at Mike with tears in her eyes─she was going to do absolutely everything to make sure this wouldn’t be the last time you and her would see Mike Edwards.
The next morning, Sue-Lin was up and ready at the crack of dawn. She washed her face, brushed her teeth and gotten herself dressed in the outfit you put out for her last night. The big red dog Mike won for her yesterday was nowhere to be seen and she would be absolutely devastated if she wouldn’t be aware of its whereabouts. But she was very aware. When you turned down Mike and took her out of the restaurant, her prayers had been answered when you seemed to completely forget about the stuffed animal and she pretended to as well. Mike didn’t notice until you and Sue-Lin were out of the building and he had no luck of finding you and the little girl outside when he had managed to squirm his way through the crowds and to the monorail. You were long gone, but something told him not to get rid of the awfully hideous red dog, so he took it home and decided to give his luck another try tomorrow.
‘‘Y/N, wake up, wake up!’’ Sue-Lin yelled after she was done playing with her toys. She had decided to let you sleep until at least 8 o’clock, because she knew how cranky you could get in the mornings. Eight was still damn early for you, especially on your free day, but the little girl couldn’t wait anymore. When you opened your eyes, Sue-Lin channeled the little actress that was hidden inside of her─she pouted her lips, making tears burn in her eyes as much as she was capable of. You turned on your side as you opened your eyes, blinking a few times and when you saw her teary eyed face, you sat up a little as worry took over your features. ‘‘Hey little girl, come here,’’ you whispered, wrapping your arms around her as she sat down next to you on your bed. ‘‘What’s going on?’’
Sue-Lin grinned softly at herself as she had her face pressed in your chest, squeezing you tightly with her arms wrapped around your waist. ‘‘M-My.. My dog,’’ she stuttered, letting out soft sobs. She sure did a good job of making it all sound very realistic. You frowned, running your hands through her long hair that was hanging down because she wasn’t able to do her usual braided pigtails herself yet.  ‘‘My red dog that mr. M-Mike won for me.. We forgot it last n-night,’’ she sniffed, her shoulders shaking in your embrace as she cried and you widened your eyes a little. You had completely forgotten about the stuffed animal when leaving the fair, your stupid weak brain too occupied with Mike and how much you wanted to slap yourself for turning him down. You cleared your throat a little, placing your hands on her arms to gently push her back in your embrace, looking down at her. Real tears were rolling down her cheeks, so you figured she must’ve really liked this dog. She pouted heavily, wiping some of her tears away with the back of her hands, looking up at you with those soft sad brown eyes.
‘‘Can we go back today to see if he still has it?’’ She questioned pleadingly and you sighed deeply, squeezing your eyes shut for a few seconds. He told you that he’d be going to the NASA exposition today, but he could’ve changed his mind. Maybe him and his friend had already flown right out of Seattle the moment you got home last night.
‘‘There could be a chance that he won’t be there, Sue-Lin. He could be a busy man,’’
Sue-Lin huffed but as you raised your eyebrow at her, she quickly pouted again. ‘‘But what if he is! Mr. Mike is a sweet man and I don’t think he is a busy man. Busy men don’t go to the fair alone,’’ she stated matter-of-factly, as if she had known this man her entire life already. Part of you wished you were that trusting of people, maybe then you would’ve actually be dating someone already. You looked at her with squinted eyes and a smile spread across her face, wrapping her arms around your neck to hug you tightly as she pleaded over and over again for you to take her. You sighed deeply and tugged her hair softly in a playful manner. ‘‘Okay, fine, fine! We’ll go,’’ you gave in and she immediately jumped off the bed, tugging you along. ‘‘But! Only to get your dog back and no more running off, you hear me?’’ you told her, trying to sound stern, but she just smiled and nodded, pulling you into the bathroom so you could do her hair.
You hated that you actually made a bigger effort today than you did yesterday─perfecting your make-up, matching the colors of your eye shadow to the pink cream shift dress you decided to wear. Sue-Lin gave you a wide grin as you stepped into a pair of white mid heeled pumps, spraying some perfume on your skin after you put your hair up. You raised an eyebrow at her, playfully spraying some perfume in her direction. ‘‘Not a word,’’ you told her with a laugh, grabbing your purse and car keys, getting her in the car with you before driving to the fair, once again.
With the weather being sunnier today, it seemed like the fair was even more crowded. There were people every where and even though both you and Sue-Lin were tempted by the tempting smell of food all around, you went straight to the exposition halls. You were determined to get this damned stuffed animal back, and Sue-Lin was determined to have you and Mike see each other again. You bought a ticket for the NASA exposition and sighed deeply as you looked around, Sue-Lin clinging onto your hand. You barely knew anything about space and as a fashion major, you were certainly not interested in NASA, so you felt extremely out of place. Most people that wandered around the place knew what they were here for and actually understood what they read in the information folders, but you and the little girl on your hand were completely clueless. But then again, you were here on a mission and one mission only.
‘‘There he is!’’ Sue-Lin exclaimed loudly, tugging on your hand as she pointed at the man you were looking for, dressed in a formal pair of black slacks and a brown blazer. God, he looked even prettier than yesterday. That damned big red dog was squeezed under his arm, on his other arm… a pretty blonde wearing a bright yellow sundress, her blue eyes twinkling as she looked up at him with a loving smile spread across her red lips. You felt jealousy creep up your spine even though you barely knew the man for 24 hours and you hated it. Sue-Lin did not look amused either, but before you could stop her, she was already pulling you through the crowd and to Mike and the mystery lady.
‘‘Mr. Mike!’’ Sue-Lin yelled as she let go of your hand and ran up to him with open arms. He smiled brightly as he let go of the woman next to him and swiftly picked the little girl up in his arms, putting her on his hip as he laughed when she hugged him tightly. ‘‘You brought him with you!’’ she giggled as she wrapped one arm around the dog’s neck, squeezing it to her smaller frame. ‘‘Ofcourse I did, tiny. I knew you would miss him,’’ he grinned as he pressed a kiss on her forehead, putting her down. He looked at you with a hint of hope in his eyes, smile still lingering on his face. You gave the girl next to him a quick smile, before looking back at him. ‘‘Thank you for keeping it with you and taking it here. Have a good day, Mike,’’ you told him with a nod of your head, taking Sue-Lin’s hand in yours again before you turned around and started walking away. Sue-Lin was protesting, looking back at Mike with pleading eyes, but you just tugged her along, wanting to get out of the exposition hall as fast as possible. You felt like a fool. What did you even expect? For him to welcome you with open arms after you’ve so bluntly turned him down last night? For such a man to even be single in the first place? You didn’t only feel like one, but you were one─a goddamn fool.
Mike hugged the woman next to him goodbye, pushing his way through the sea of people as he ran after you and Sue-Lin, screaming your name. People were looking at him, curious to see what was going on, but he didn’t care. He didn’t hesitate to follow you outside and as you could still hear him calling for you outside, you stopped abruptly in your tracks and turned around. Poor Sue-Lin was thrown in every direction and she was thankful that you let go of her hand, though she held onto the hem of your dress to let you know she was still next to you.
‘‘What do you want, Mike?’’ You exclaimed frustratedly, a deep sigh escaping you. Maybe it sounded more rude than you intended it to, but the truth was, you were frustrated and annoyed at yourself. You wouldn’t have given in to him so easily, but you were planning on actually giving him a chance. ‘‘What was that in there? Why are you running?’’ He questioned as he took a step closer to you, trying to grab your hand but you prevented him from doing so as you casually crossed your arms in front of your chest. ‘‘I thought you’d at least buy me a drink for keeping Big Red over there safe,’’ he grinned as he nodded to the stuffed animal in Sue-Lin’s arm, the girl watching the both of you curiously. She had no idea what was about to go down, but the thought of you and Mike seperating again made her sad.
‘‘Perhaps I was going to, but it seemed like you were in perfectly fine company already,’’ you said, obviously meaning the blonde on his arm when you came in. You tried to keep the tone in your voice neutral, but you were sure you sounded like a jealous girlfriend. And you weren’t even his girlfriend.
When he shamelessly let out a laugh, you widened your eyes at him as you tightened your arms against your chest. Was he really laughing at you right now? The nerve. You heard Sue-Lin giggle softly at Mike’s laugh and you softly clenched your jaw, reaching down to grab her hand and once more walk away from this man, and this time without a plan to return. Before you could manage to do so, he grabbed your wrist and looked at you, showing off his pearly whites with a bright smile.
‘‘That was my sister,’’ he said with an amused chuckle and when he saw you looking at him with wide shameful eyes, blush creeping onto your cheeks, he couldn’t hold back his laughter. He figured how it must’ve looked like for you and while he usually did not care to string several girls around at once, ever since seeing you yesterday, he had his sights set on you. You were interesting─not giving in to his charms so easily like most usually did, making him work for your attention. It was refreshing, in some way.
‘‘Your s-sister? Well, what about.. What about your friend? Where is he?’’ You questioned, placing a hand on your hip as you tried to act as unbothered as possible but your nervous demeanor wasn’t fooling anyone, let alone him. He shrugged as he grinned at you, his hand that was still around your wrist loosening but instead of letting you go, he slipped his hand right into yours, lacing your fingers together. ‘‘I told you, he’s not ready,’’ he said, shooting Sue-Lin a quick wink as he started walking with you and her. She moved to Mike’s other side, slipping her hand into his. Your muscles released some of their tension, showing defeat as you just walked along, looking at him with curious eyes.
‘‘I just applied for a job at NASA,’’ he grinned widely. ‘‘Since you didn’t want to join me for the exposition, I called up my sister who lives in Seattle. She gave me the final push I needed to reach for space,’’ nudging your shoulder with his own, he laughed as you widened your eyes and smiled at him. A genuine smile. Yesterday he told you he was thinking of going for bigger and better things, and now he had truly done it. Mike Edwards moved fast.
‘‘That’s amazing, Mike! Congratulations,’’ you told him, squeezing his hand a little. You and Mike looked at each other as you walked, big smiles on both of your faces. Maybe you had been worrying for nothing, maybe you should just let go of the reigns for a little bit and put your trust in the universe for once, letting them take over instead of shielding your heart from anyone that came too close. The blue eyed charmer was about to lean in to kiss your cheek until Sue-Lin harshly pulled on his arm and he let out a grunt, frowning at her─his features relaxed as she smiled brightly and pointed at a candy booth, tugging you both along.
Mike remembered what the little girl told him yesterday on the monorail and grinned, letting Sue-Lin pick what she wanted to have before he ordered a bucket of buttered popcorn and turned to you with a smirk. ‘‘I should be the one buying you that,’’ you laughed as you took it out of his hands, letting him pay the vendor. Sue-Lin was happily munching on her sugar coated apple─Mike took her stuffed animal in his arms, giving her enough space to eat as he slipped his hand back into yours. He opened his mouth as you started walking again and you took the hint, throwing some popcorn in his mouth. Half of it landed on the ground and he gave you a look before he laughed, opening his mouth once more. You rolled your eyes playfully, feeding him a bit more gentle this time. He managed to catch your index finger in between his lips, sucking some butter off the digit. You had to bite your tongue to hold back a gasp when you felt his tongue come into contact with your skin, and pulled back your finger. ‘‘You taste sweet, honey,’’ he grinned, the way he was looking at you making you nearly fall to your knees right in the middle of this goddamn fair. Shaking your head a little, you threw some popcorn at his face, laughing as you tried not to show how flustered he was making you feel.
You weren’t exactly planning on spending another full day at the fair and abandoning your school responsibilities, but before you knew it, the sun had set and the fair lit up with twinkling neon lights. Families with small children were traded for the local youth who went to spend their money on thrill rides and the ridiculous amount of games there were to be played, trying to win their lovers a cute prize. After the small dinner you had, Sue-Lin was too tired to walk and was currently sleeping on Mike’s shoulder as he carried her onto the stairs to the monorail platform. Your heart swelled at the sight, squeezing the red dog closer against you as you silently followed. There was no way you could protect your poor heart now─Mike had been nothing but nice the entire day, and he was so incredibly sweet with Sue-Lin. Playing all the games with her, going on all the rides, putting her on his neck or back when her feet got tired. When you got back to your car after the monorail ride, you smiled at him as he put Sue-Lin on the backseat, fastening her seatbelt. You waited when he asked  you to, watching him run back across the street to get some of his stuff out of the public lockers.
‘‘Do you need a ride?’’ You asked as you opened the door on the drivers’ side, looking at him with hopeful eyes. Please say yes, please say yes. He laughed softly, scratching the back of his neck as he bit his lip. ‘‘I got nowhere for you to drop me off at,’’ he mumbled and you frowned, leaning your arm on the door. ‘‘I was living with Danny, but he kind of.. kicked me out,’’ he spoke softly, almost seeming a little ashamed to admit such a thing. Your mouth formed in a small O shape─what an asshole of a friend. ‘‘What about your sister?’’ you questioned softly, not wanting to sound rude, or as if you were rejecting him. Again. He told you she worked nightshifts at her job most of the time and he did not have a key to her place since they didn’t see each other a lot. You sighed softly, shoving your car keys in his hand. Maybe you were going to regret this, but those were going to be worries for tomorrow. ‘‘You drive, I’ll tell you where to go,’’
Sue-Lin was still sound asleep in Mike’s arms as you entered your small apartment and you silently pointed to your bedroom door. You followed him inside, putting his bag of what you guessed were clothes and his guitar case by the dining table. You smiled softly as Sue-Lin groggily opened her eyes when she was put down on the bed, watching Mike with confused eyes as he took her shoes off. ‘‘It’s alright, tiny. You’re home,’’ he chuckled softly as she looked at you and nodded, laying her head down on the pillow. He stood up straight and looked at you as you walked closer to him, grinning playfully. ‘‘And you will be sleeping on the couch,’’ you told him as you poked his chest softly, laughing as he rolled his eyes and nodded, pressing a quick kiss on your cheek before he grabbed his bag and left the bedroom. You undressed Sue-Lin and put her pajama’s on, which honestly was more difficult than you expected to do on someone who wasn’t cooperating at all. You let her hair be for what it was so you wouldn’t wake her up and quickly changed out of your dress and into a nightie, putting the matching robe on as well so it didn’t seem like you were completely throwing yourself at the man. You still wanted his head to turn, though. You let your make-up for what it was, spraying some perfume in the air before walking through it, meeting Mike again who was sitting on your couch. He had taken his blazer off, sleeves of his cream button up rolled up to his elbows, guitar in his lap. You both stared at each other and you hadn’t even realised your night wear had him checking you out like you wanted him to, too busy focusing on his chest that peaked out from underneath his shirt.
‘‘I didn’t know you played,’’ you smiled, clearing your throat a little as you walked over to him. He grinned as he looked at you, his thigh pressed against yours on your small couch as you sat down next to him. You ignored how close he was to the best of your abilities and looked down at his guitar, tapping your nail against the neck of the instrument softly. ‘‘There’s a lot you don’t know about me,’’ he grinned mischievously and you looked at him, raising a playful eyebrow.
‘‘Like… how you’re secretly a serial killer and will bash my head in with that guitar any second now?’’
He widened his eyes in horror and you laughed, throwing your head back. ‘‘Good God, what is going on in that pretty but sick little head of yours?’’ He laughed, putting his guitar down as he held up his hands when you looked at him. As if to show you he was harmless. You giggled and pushed his hands down, smiling at him. ‘‘That’s a secret I’ll never tell,’’ you joked as you shot him a bold wink and he chuckled, smoothly sliding his hands in yours. ‘‘I’m willing to try and make you, though,’’ he mumbled as he started leaning in closer. Your giggling stopped as you gasped in some air, squeezing his hands softly as you felt his hot breath on your skin. You caught him looking down at your lips as he licked his own and it sent a tingle down your spine, your eyes fluttering shut when he softly pressed his lips against yours. Surprising the both of you, you were the first one to part your lips, deepening the kiss when your tongue came in contact with his. He slowly released your hands and cupped your face, your hands planted on his thighs. As he softly sucked on your tongue before pulling back, you pressed your digits in his legs and he grinned, moving one hand up to your hair─he pulled the elastic you put in there this morning out of it, making your hair frame your face. When he put his hands on your hips and leaned back, you gladly followed him and straddled his waist, gasping softly as his hands slid up your thighs and disappeared under the silk of your night wear. You never expected yourself to be in this position, especially not with him, but it seemed like you were weaker than you thought. How in the world could you resist a man like Mike Edwards? The longer you looked at him from up close, the more convinced you were that he was created by the hands of God himself.
You leaned back in to kiss him once more, your hands fumbling with the buttons of his shirt as you explored each others’ mouths. You could still taste the faint taste of sweets on his tongue he had throughout the day and it had you softly moaning in his mouth, his fingertips caressing your warm skin. You pushed the fabric of his shirt off of his shoulders when you finally managed to flick open the last button and pulled back from the kiss, running your fingers down his chest and stomach, shamelessly checking him out. It greatly fed into his ego and he smirked as he looked down to watch your quick hands unbuckle his belt, pulling down his zipper impatiently. He let you do your thing as he sat back, only raising his hips off of the couch for a second so you could pull both his slacks and boxershorts down a little, groaning softly as his hard cock sprung free, a drizzle of pre-cum leaking down his shaft. He didn’t expect you to take so much initiative and be so bold, but he sure as hell wasn’t complaining. His hands slid down your thighs again as you moved back a little further on his legs, wrapping your hand around his cock─you smiled sweetly at him as you held eye contact, your hand moving up to let your thumb spread some of his pre-cum around, making him gasp softly. You wrapped your other hand around his cock, bringing your thumb to your lips─shamelessly sucking off his arousal. ‘‘You taste sweet, honey,’’ you mimicked his words back at him he used with you when he sucked the butter of your finger, and you had to bite your tongue to hold back a laugh as you saw the look in his eyes. He looked like he was ready to jump your bones and devour you whole, the small moan rolling off his tongue making you clench around nothingness.
His fingers were digging into your thighs as you were jerking him off, building up to a steady and enjoyable pace. Small moans and grunts were leaving his mouth, trying to keep himself as quiet as possible so he wouldn’t wake up Sue-Lin. He pulled the string of your robe loose, the weightless fabric falling right down your shoulders, exposing the skimpy nightie you wore underneath. He licked his lips hungrily as he cupped your breasts, squeezing them softly to make you moan at his actions. He grinned softly and moved one hand down, pulling your nightie up a little as he spread his legs a bit further, which caused you to spread yours. As he had more space, he slipped his hand right into your panties and ran his fingers through your wet folds, humming teasingly at the feeling. You watched as he pulled his hand back, dipping his digits into his mouth─when he opened his mouth, you just knew what he was about to say.
‘‘Don’t you even dare say it,’’ you laughed softly as you grabbed his wrist, bringing it back to where you wanted him. He laughed as well and gave you what you wanted, slipping his hand back into your panties, pushing a finger into you right away. Your soft laughter turned into a shaky gasp, your free hand grasping onto his forearm. He gave you a devilish grin as he pushed his digit all the way in, pressing his palm against your clit, rubbing against it teasingly. You moaned softly, nails digging into his skin but he didn’t seem to be bothered by it at all. You whined pleadingly as you squeezed his cock in your hand a little bit, picking up your pace. He groaned softly as he added another finger, giving up on the teasing and giving you what you wanted─mostly because he could barely focus with your hand trying to match up to the rhythm of his. The both of you were trying hard to keep your sounds to a minimum, keeping eye contact so intense you didn’t even think you were capable of having with someone. You weren’t an extremely shy person, not even with someone’s dick in your hand, but one should be at least a little timid in this position. This man was awakening something inside of you and you couldn’t wait to explore that part of yourself more.
You were both close─you could feel it in the way he twitched in your hand, and he could feel it in the way your hips were following his fingers, walls clenching around him. Your hand slowly came to halt and when he slipped his fingers out of you and out of your panties, you got up, legs a little wobbly. He took off his shirt completely as you dropped your robe to the floor, grabbing his face to kiss him hungrily while he pulled his pants down, kicking his shoes off and the fabric that pooled around his ankles. He pulled back from the kiss to take off your nightie, throwing it across the room as he snaked his arms around your waist. You looked up at him as he put you on your small two seater, hovering above you with hungry eyes, hands moving your panties down. You ran your hands through his hair, messing up the gel in it as his fingertips tickled your calves when he pulled your underwear all the way off, dropping it to the floor. The both of you completely forgot about the fact that you were not the only person in your apartment tonight, hopelessly dragged into the pleasure of exploring each other.
He leaned down to kiss your lips a few times, aligning himself at your entrance as you spread your legs for him. Your hands were holding onto his shoulders for dear life as he pushed himself inside and you groaned softly at the delicious intrusion. He gently leaned his forehead against yours as he bottomed out, gasping as his hands were squeezing the arm rest of the couch.
‘‘F-fuck,’’ he stuttered softly, eyes fluttering closed, allowing you to admire the way pleasure was written over his features. ‘‘Baby, you’re so tight,’’ he breathed out and you kissed him, grinning softly against his lips as you cupped his face. ‘‘Doubt you m-mind that,’’ you whispered, trying to sound smug, but he didn’t miss the slight stutter in your words. He laughed softly, biting his lip as he opened his eyes to look down at you, raising a teasing eyebrow. ‘‘Certainly not, beautiful,’’ he grinned, capturing your lips in a slow kiss as he gently thrusted into you─you gasped in the kiss, arms wrapping around him, nails dragging down his back as he didn’t waste any time and picked up his pace. It only caused your nails to dig in deeper and he moaned deeply at the delicious hint of pain mixed with pleasure, fucking you into the couch.
The both of you were a mess, moaning in each others’ mouths to keep the noise down─you whined softly as he pulled back from the kiss and leaned one knee on the couch, his left foot planted on the floor as he grabbed your ankles and put your thighs flat against his chest, feet over his shoulders. He continued thrusting, placing kisses on the side of your foot. While his hair was a little messed up and his lips swollen because of stolen kisses, he still looked as gorgeous as ever, a smirk tugging at his lips. You cursed as you pressed your hands over your mouth, your forearms squeezing your breasts together which Mike certainly wasn’t complaining about. You had to try real hard not to moan too loud, but Goddamnit, he was making it so hard. As he leaned forward a little, taking your legs with him and nearly folding you in half, you widened your eyes at him as you cried out in your hands. With the new position, he was hitting your g spot with every thrust, making you squeeze your eyes shut. You wanted to look at him and watch his pretty face, but your body wouldn’t allow it. You were too far gone in the pleasure that was slowly but surely consuming every inch of your body and mind, crying and moaning in the palm of your hands and when he saw an actual tear rolling down your cheek, his ego nearly exploded, smirking like an asshole.
Your orgasm was approaching fast and you made the mistake to grab onto his arms, a moan escaping your throat. He immediately leaned down even further, swallowing your cries as he kissed you sloppily, his hips stuttering a little as he came inside of you. You didn’t even protest it, your own orgasm making you feel as if you were floating right off of the pink two seater. He slowly pulled away from the kiss a few seconds after your shared climax, pulling out of you─the loss of having him inside of you made you whine softly, looking at him as you breathed heavily, your ears ringing. He pushed back some of his hair and let himself sit back on the couch, throwing his head back.
‘‘Thank God for the World’s Fair,’’ he sighed with a grin on his face, rolling his head into your direction. You looked at him, laughing as you poked your toe in his ribs, making him squeal softly before he grabbed your ankle. As he noticed his cum threatening to spill out of you, he let go of your ankle and pushed two digits inside of you, pushing it back inside of you. You leaned your elbows on the arm rest of the couch, gasping as you widened your eyes a little at him. With a soft laugh at your reaction, he leaned forward and pecked your lips. ‘‘You almost stained your pretty little couch,’’ he said playfully and you rolled your eyes, slapping his chest as he pulled his fingers out of you.
The both of you were tiptoeing to your bedroom like thieves in the night, having put your underwear back on. As you slowly creaked open the door and stuck your head inside, you saw Sue-Lin was sleeping in the middle of the bed, arms spread out, snoring softly. You grabbed Mike’s hand and softly pulled him along to your ensuite bathroom, closing the door at a snail’s pace behind you before you turned on the light.
‘‘I should buy her a present tomorrow,’’ Mike grinned as you were standing in your small shower space together. You pushed back some of his wet hair before wrapping your arms around his neck, laughing softly. ‘‘She likes chocolate and roses. Any color,’’ you told him, tilting your head with a grin on your face. He raised an eyebrow, slipping his arms around your waist to push you against his chest. ‘‘She does, or.. you do?’’ he hummed with a grin on his face─remembering the moment he had with Sue-Lin on the monorail yesterday morning. You and her weren’t even related, but definitely alike. He leaned down to press a tiny kiss on your nose and you giggled, standing on your toes to peck his lips. ‘‘Both. We come in a packaged deal, ya know?’’
‘‘I figured that much,’’ he laughed, stepping backwards so you’d have more of the warmth of the streaming water. ‘‘But I think you deserve a little more than just chocolates and roses,’’ he smiled and you looked up at him curiously, moving some hair out of your face. When his smile turned into a teasing grin and he wiggled his eyebrows a few times, you huffed and rolled your eyes─he probably wasn’t going to tell you what he had in store for you.
‘‘Surprise me, mr. Edwards,’’ you sighed theatrical, leaning your head back and he laughed, leaning down to kiss your neck playfully. ‘‘That I will, beautiful,’’ he hummed in your ear, placing a tiny kiss on your earlobe. Maybe falling for the charms of Mike Edwards wasn’t so bad after all.

Something I really love about E's movies is that they provided work for so many character actors. For example: Follow That Dream had the guy who went on to play Floyd the Barber in the Andy Griffith show, Kissin' Cousins had the guy who played Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and the Trouble with Girls had both the girl who played Cindy in the Brady Bunch, and the guy who went on to be the voice of Scooby-Doo.
i was thinking about that too!
he created so many opportunities for people that may have never had a shot. for example, in IHATWF (1963), a kid kicks elvis in the shin. that kid went on to become kurt russell who played elvis in the 1979 movie!
(it was actually an uncredited role)
i find the sheer amount of lives he’s touched to be so brilliant. everyone knows who he is, but it seems that there is always someone who knew him or saw him personally!

Kung Fu Elvis Part 3
youtube
If you're new to this series, the point of this is to find out which Elvis character is the best fighter given an uninterrupted hand to hand combat styled fight. The goal is to rank each individual Elvis character and then within each tier determine who would win against who.
How I plan on determining this will be by finding each character's age, size and general background. How well a character does in on screen fights will also be considered but analyzed on a case by case basis. Sometimes an Elvis character loses a fight simply because it's a comedy, or due to the low quality stage fighting wins because his opponents are laughably weak.
At the end of the day this is all headcanon as these are all fictional characters. If you disagree with how I rank a character I would love to hear your thoughts on where you would put them.
Tumblr media
Wild in the Country is a movie that doesn't have a particular year. You would have to use the cars seen in the movie to determine when it takes place. Despite the presence of cars from the 40s, you also see a 1961 Chrysler New Yorker. Culturally speaking, you can also tell this is the early 1960s as you have Glenn going to therapy instead of immediately being institutionalized, a black man working with a white attorney showing the progression away from segregation, and college being a somewhat viable option with attendance steadily increasing since 1957. Given that Glenn doesn't have much of a job and has a rough and tumble backstory, it's likely that he isn't getting a full three square meals a day.
Even though I said on some sources, Glenn is stated to be 25, I could see someone make the argument that he's younger. Since no one claimed that he was a bit "too old" to be a college student, I'd say he's about 20/21 years old. Glenn being drunk is a non-issue because I don't see this town as being the type to care about enforcing drinking laws. In fact, Glenn's dad is an alcoholic and his uncle has it readily available which would make it more likely for Glenn to have drank before he turned 21.
Tumblr media
Kissin Cousins relies heavily on the US military wanting land to build an airbase for the sake of national defense. Given that the Cuban Missile Crisis would serve as a big motivator to have a solidified air defense, we can assume this movie takes place a little after October 1962. Josh is an Air Force pilot and since he doesn't have anything on his uniform to suggest he was involved in a war or military intervention, it's fair to say that he's been living comfortably yet still has to be at least somewhat fit. Jodie meanwhile has been living up in the mountains his whole life where everyone lives off the land, so there isn't a lot of room to take in an excessive amount of calories. That also means, given his lifestyle and his work as a wrestler, Jodie by necessity has to stay in shape.
Going off of Josh's rank as a 2nd LT. I would say that he's anywhere between 25-30 years old. He never mentions being involved in Korea so that would make him under 30 in 1963. Given that there's no war, it takes a little longer to be promoted so even if Josh went to the academy and graduated, he'd still need a couple more years to be a commissioned officer. If you're in the Air Force, please correct me on how this worked during the 60s. As for Jodie, I have nothing to go off of. We don't have anything in mountain life that's age based. We can only assume that since Jodie is played by Elvis, he's at least an adult. For simplicity's sake, I'd say he's about the same age as Josh.
Tumblr media
Despite having a somewhat specific timeline, Kid Galahad doesn't have a specific date. What we can assume is that it's after the 1920s since a poster of the real Jack Dempsey fight from 1921 is shown to be really old. Since the movie was filmed in 1961, I wouldn't be surprised if it was thrown in to a be 40th anniversary nod to it. Given that we see a contemporary Lincoln Continental, I would think this takes place throughout 1961. Mushy Callahan exists in this movie's universe is shown to be an older man, indicating that this takes place well after his prime since he retired in the 1930s. Walter being stationed in Okinawa for the army doesn't really give you a specific clue of when it takes place since the US had a persistent military presence in Japan after their surrender in WWII. Walter never mentions a war though, so we can assume that this takes place after Korea yet before the US sent group troops to Vietnam in 1965. We can assume that him being a soldier and a mechanic meant that he's relatively strong and fit.
Walter only has a canonical baptism date of August 14th 1939 in Cream Valley, New York. Given the context clue of his parents dying when he was 14 months old and that he lived with his family in Kentucky since then, we would assume he was baptized before they died. He was baptized by an Irish Catholic priest if he was allowed to marry Rose, an Irish Catholic so that means his parents likely abided by Catholic guidelines that a healthy baby is baptized within a few weeks or months of birth. Therefore, I would assume he was born in 1939 which in 1961 would make him about 22 years old.
Tumblr media
This movie is about as specific as you can get with the time period. The Seattle World's Fair only lasts 6 months from April to October, 1962. We also know that Mike and Danny fly over a potato field. Potatoes can have a variety of planting and harvesting times, but it's common for them to be harvested in August or September. Since the fair isn't overflowing with kids, we can assume most schools have already opened. Sue-Lin's 7 years old so she's old enough to go to school, yet she's able to attend. If we assume that Mr. Ling was saving up money to take Sue-Lin to the fair, he would've had to have been saving money throughout the summer so he can take Sue-Lin right before her schooling starts, so we can assume that this takes place in either August or September, 1962. Mike being a recently destitute crop duster, likely had enough money to eat properly. He would also have to be fit enough to have any chance at becoming a test pilot or an astronaut.
We don't Mike's exact age, but we can make a guess based on certain elements of his life. If he wants to apply to NASA he has to be below the age of 35, have a degree in most commonly engineering, etc. Mike doesn't feel concerned about the age requirement so we assume that he has a few years to wait. We know Mike was in the Army for 3 years and that it takes about 4 years to get a degree in engineering. If we assume Mike did meet that requirement, he likely did it right after he left the Army using his VA benefits. Since the youngest you can be to join the Army is 18, Mike at his youngest finished his degree when he was 25. Since he worked with Danny as a crop duster for 3 years that would make him at least 28. So for simplicity's sake we'll stick with him being 28 years old.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Glenn might have an age advantage, but he's not at all in a good position to be the best fighter. He's a hot-headed character when he fights and only fought people who were impaired to some degree. He seems to win because of adrenaline and luck. He's similar to Deke from part 1 in that his ability to get proper nutrition is questionable at the very least. Given that he's the young, scrappy and hungry character I don't see him being able to have a long fight. If fact, I can see him being completely unable to win a planned fight. With no motivation to fight as his life isn't on the line, he just wouldn't do that well.
Therefore, Glenn is the worst fighter of this group but that's not an insult. With the exception of Jodie, everyone else has military training. Glenn is still in B tier simply because for the average person, he could beat them in a fight. He just wouldn't stand a chance against the other fighters in this group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josh and Jodie only fight each other. No one won because Azalea and Selena interrupted their fight. If you look at this realistically though, I don't see this as an even match. Josh having military training doesn't really help him if he was in a fight. He's an Air Force pilot so he's very unlikely to face someone one on one. Also he would have a gun which doesn't reflect your physical abilities. Jodie is essentially the strongest man in the whole mountain village. You can't live in the mountains your whole life, with no contact to the outside world, and not develop any type of muscle. The only gun they have is a hunting rifle, so must confrontations likely are settled through physical force. That gives Jodie a lot more experience with physical combat.
Therefore, Josh would be in B tier but above Glenn. Josh in general is more physically fit than Glenn. Simply having better nutrition by being in the Air Force would give Josh more energy. Glenn having the age advantage doesn't help him since he wouldn't have the stamina from lack of nourishment. Jodie on the other hand would be in A tier. Brute strength would be enough to win against the average person which Josh basically is. If you take him being a champion wrestler seriously, I don't see how Jodie could realistically lose against someone like Josh in a purely physical fight. I can't rank him higher because even this is based purely on what I think should happen. The movie just doesn't give us enough to know for sure.
Tumblr media
Walter won every single fight, won against professional opponents, and won against opponents despite being unarmed. Even in the beginning when he had no technique, he still won his practice match against Joey with one punch. As a professional boxer, he's nothing but physically fit. You know that his camp is going to give him nothing but the best. We see him train and even when he's not training he's working with a heavy duty Model T.
Walter is easily the best fighter of this group. A character like Walter is the reason why this project exists. He is what this project is about: finding the best fighter in the ECU in a hand to hand combat, alone, and uninterrupted. Definitely an S tier fighter as he has direct boxing training, has an age advantage, and has never gotten out of shape. The only thing I question is how realistic it is for him to not get knocked out after being punched. The movie is making it sound as if this is some bizarre ability that I simply don't know if it could even exist in real life. I would still put him ahead of Jodie because if we do believe that Walter's ability to not get knocked out is a legit thing that can happen, then Jodie's brute strength is useless. It would be an insanely entertaining match since you just know that Jodie would be fueled by his hatred for losing.
Tumblr media
Mike has only won fights that don't fit my proper criteria. I really think he can win on his own but the movie simply doesn't depict the fights like that. Then again, these are more akin to street fights where things aren't always fair. Adrenaline might play a big role in his fight against Vince, but again Mike being able to maintain a certain level of technique is a sign of skill.
Mike. E is in A tier and I can see him winning some good fights. Despite being a crop duster pilot, Mike being in the Army does give him an advantage. He has to have a bunch of stamina and it shows with him being able to run all over Seattle and still manage to fight Vince. However, without any official solo fights, I can't give him the edge over Jodie. If Jodie being the champion wrestler is a fact, then he would have more canonical solo wins than Mike.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To summarize for this part:
Walter is in S tier.
Jodie is in A tier.
Mike E. is in A tier but below Jodie.
Josh is in B tier.
Glenn is in B tier but below Josh.
