Let Kel Be Sad: An Analysis on Kel’s struggles to express his negative emotions

Like Hero, Kel is also a “fixer”—he would bend over backwards to solve his friends' problems and stop the world if it would make them happy again, and both him and his brother are such big hearted and generous people who would much rather be the emotional support for others rather than talk about their own problems and make a situation about themselves and their feelings. For Hero, this often involves burying his own feelings and faking happiness, but I don’t think it necessarily means this for Kel, even if he struggles to express his negative emotions.

To me, Kel’s happiness and positivity is genuine, but he dismisses, discounts, and often runs from his sadness when he does experience it.

Let's discuss under the cut.

[Mod Sprinkles made the joke that in another universe I (mod Acacia) would also run a blog called "Let Kel Be Sad" so here are some Kel thoughts. Thanks for indulging my ramblings! 🧡]

Disclaimer: These are just my personal opinions, perceptions, and headcanons about Kel (and Hero). There are a lot of ways his character can be interpreted, and one of the great things about fandom is getting to see different points of view and differing interpretations of characters we all know and love. I know I speak for both Sprinkles and myself when I say we have a lot of respect for that, and for that reason, I want to be upfront that, while I do genuinely believe Kel struggles expressing negative emotions (thus the "Let Kel Be Sad" title), I don't personally view Kel as someone whose happiness is "fake" in the same way as Hero's. I can see the appeal of this interpretation and can understand why people interpret his character in this way, but it personally does not vibe with my personal interpretations, perceptions, and headcanons of Kel and his character, so if you perceive/headcanon Kel in that way, this post probably won't be your cup of tea. Please keep that in mind.

Warnings: OMORI Spoilers and discussion of game-relevant heavier topics such death, trauma, and grief.

Kel wears his heart on his sleeve, but this doesn't mean that he is shallow. He is a big-hearted, deeply empathetic, and incredibly loyal friend, and it cannot be stated enough that one of Kel’s biggest strengths is his ability to use his natural positivity and resilience to lift up those around him. He’s really the hero of the game because none of the healing would have been possible if he hadn’t continued to believe in his friends even after all of this time, hadn’t encouraged them, and hadn’t built them up just by being Kel.

And while I do think Kel does struggle to express vulnerabilities and negative emotions, I don't personally think of Kel's unwavering optimism as a mask. In my mind, Kel is not an emotional repressor or burier in the same way as Hero. In fact, because he wears his heart on his sleeve, he would probably really struggle to fake an emotion he wasn’t feeling (even if it was something positive like happiness). If Kel doesn’t want to express an emotion, I imagine he runs from it and avoids it, since it’s not natural or easy for him to “replace” or “bury” it with a fake one. Whereas Hero is much more reserved and private about his feelings, no matter what they are, so it’s much easier for him to convincingly mask pain and suffering under layers and layers of fake happiness. I just don’t think Kel would be able to hold back those emotions for very long. His negative feelings would eventually just kind of explode out of him without thinking and/or they’d become so apparent from his expressions and/or actions (since he does wear his heart on his sleeve) and everyone (including the player of the game) would know that he had so much negativity under the surface.

This isn't to say that Kel is perfectly fine. He isn't. He has suffered a terrible loss just like everyone else, but I think the game makes it clear that Kel has the most acceptance surrounding Mari's death and that he has made peace with what happened more so than the other main characters. Please keep in mind that this is only relative to the other main cast. Kel may seem "well-adjusted" in comparison to his brother and his friends who are, quite frankly, barely keeping it together, but he would not necessarily be considered well-adjusted in comparison to the non-traumatized townies. I genuinely believe that Kel is still in the process of healing, but relative to the other main cast members, he is farther along in that journey than they are.

And in that way, the game doesn't really give us a moment where Kel is overwhelmed by grief in the same way as the rest of the characters. Yes, there is the scene (one of my personal favorites) where Kel shares about his fight with Hero, and it is incredibly vulnerable and gives a lot of subtly and nuance to his character, but I don't think it's necessarily evidence that the player can't accept Kel as he presents himself to us at face value in the way that we can't accept Hero as he presents himself to us at face value. As I recently discussed in this post, the scene where Sunny finds Hero crying alone at Mari’s piano on the night of "Two Days Left" tells the player that Hero's attempts to appear well-adjusted and "fine" are, at least to a certain extent, all for show. There isn’t a Kel equivalent of this scene which, I personally think, is meant to tell the player of the game that Kel is the most well-adjusted member of his friend group (key words here being "of his friend group") and the one who has the most acceptance surrounding Mari’s death. Additionally, Mod Sprinkles actually made the point that Sunny is extremely perceptive and sensitive to his friends’ feelings and emotions. If Kel was still harboring a lot of negativity surrounding Mari’s death, Sunny likely would have picked up on that and been more hesitant to go outside with him in the first place.

This isn’t to say that Kel doesn’t ever have any negative feelings and that he doesn’t struggle to express those sometimes, but I think this struggle to express “the bad stuff” doesn’t stem from a pressure he feels to be happy all the time. That said, I do wonder sometimes if he is a little scared of feeling sad. He wants to be happy and wants everyone around him to be happy, and I think there is this certain helplessness that he feels when he can’t cheer other people up. We see a little glimpse of that in his account of his & Hero’s fight after Mari’s death. I think watching someone he loved so much go through such a deep and debilitating depression at such a young age probably permanently affected him, and he might have some worries about getting “stuck” like his brother, wallowing in that sadness and grief if he allows himself to feel it.

However, this is an unwarranted fear because Kel and Hero are very different. Even though Kel might feel sad, and his feelings are absolutely valid, I don’t think he’s prone to that level of despair and depression that we see in Hero. Understanding that his experiences and emotional responses are different than his brother’s is a big part of growing up so it might take him a while to realize this, and in the meantime, I could see it possibly manifesting itself as a sort of avoidance of sadness.

Everyone grieves differently. This is a difficult concept for even adults to understand, so I can't imagine how hard it would be for a 12-year-old like Kel. Because Kel didn't grieve Mari in the same way as Hero or his friends and didn’t spiral into the same level of despair and depression as the others, I think he struggles with invalidating his own feelings to himself sometimes--writing them off as shallow and dismissing them to himself as "just not deep enough." Again, I think this goes back to the one (1) fight that Kel and Hero had. We don’t know exactly what they said to each other in that fight, but it’s my personal headcanon that Hero lashed out at Kel for “not understanding” for he felt. From then on, I think Kel really does struggle with this fear that he just doesn’t understand emotions and because of that, any attempts to help his hurting loved ones will only make everything worse.

I’d really like to see him reach a place in which he can accept that even if his feelings and his grief are different and perhaps not as lingeringly overwhelming as the others', that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have them and that doesn’t mean he didn’t care about Mari or his friends. In my mind, Kel’s hesitation and worry at expressing his negative feelings and his happy-go-lucky personality can both exist at the same time. I don't think they are mutually exclusive, and I tend to think of Kel as someone who naturally looks on the bright side of things and is genuinely optimistic and uplifting. To deny this feels like a disservice to (my personal perception of) Kel, but I think it is also a disservice to pretend he never feels sadness or any negative feelings at all. There has to be a balance.

Let Kel feel sad when he needs to but recognize that he doesn’t actually need to feel sad all that often.

Ah yes, that one man who always seems to have nearly everything under control... but he really doesn't.

He's quite easy to fluster, as long as you know how to.

It's quite funny and ironic, actually. He's flirtatious with those he's close with (and has nearly the same age with.)

He never misses a beat, but when he does, it's usually 'cause he's either stressed or thinking about something.

Either way, that is your time to strike!

Hug him from behind as he's thinking and he'll jump out of surprise.

He'll whip his head towards you, already blushing also out of surprise.

Give him a wink and a smug smile, and he'll be hiding his flushing-red face behind his hands, mumbling god-knows-what in them.

The mental facility AU is an AU where, you guessed it, everyone is in a mental hospital due to their “vibrant” personalities (ie. mental disorders).

Hero- Severe depression (Chronic depression)

Was placed in the “hospice care” area of the facility.

He had already had underlying symptoms of his condition for a while before the accident, but after his only flicker of hope disappeared, he fell so deep into his sadness that by the time his parents realized something was very, very wrong, he was close enough to death to kiss Mari on the lips.

He resides in bed for the time being, sometimes awake and sometimes asleep, but never up and around. Nothing the doctors pump into his system does anything to him.

Sunny- Schizophrenic symptoms / hallucinations (Schizophrenia)

Was placed in the “major risk” area of the facility.

After killing his sister and being caught by his parents after taking her to bed, he pleaded insanity in court and was sent to the hospital to “get better”. His father doesn’t come by to visit anymore. He’s convinced that Mari isn’t dead, and is still sleeping in her bed, waiting for him to come home. She even visits him sometimes, but when she does, she wears this really scary costume that makes her look like a ghost. She doesn’t listen when he tells her it isn’t Halloween anymore.

He resides in his room most of the time, drawing his friends and his special world over and over again. When group therapy sessions happen, he’s the one staring off into space as everyone else talks. Everyone else thinks he’s weird, at least, everyone but his friends.

Kel- Bipolar disorder (BPD)

Was placed in the “high risk” area of the facility.

Kel was someone who couldn’t control himself very well. He smiled when everyone cried and cried when everything was fine. He felt nothing and everything at the same time, and the only thing that changed was which emotion was stronger. It came to a boiling point when Mari died. At last, his emotions exploded and so did his fireworks, setting the entire park on fire. He smiled as everyone screamed and laughed as his dog Hector and everything else left behind burned to a crisp in the flames. In court, he was determined as mentally unstable and sent to the hospital for psychiatric treatment. Nobody visited him.

He resides in the hospital lobby most of the time, greeting newcomers and waving goodbye to the old comers leaving the place. He helps in any way that he can around the place, and everyone likes him, even if it’s just a little, though he can’t be trusted with any chores like serving food. When he told people the reason why he was there, they gapped their mouths in disbelief. It made him laugh.

Aubrey- Anger management (Anger issues)

Was placed in the “minor risk” area of the facility.

Living with her abusive mother, it was no wonder where Aubrey inherited her mean streak from. Her anger knew no bounds, and she could bark as much as she could bite, which was quite a lot. But when she met her friends, her anger subsided a bit. She became nicer, more calm. But the people she went to school with saw this as a weakness, and so they tried to bite. When Mari passed away, the kids at school cornered her with knives and broken beer bottles, and she did what she had to to get out of there alive. She was arrested later that day after the cops found the seven beaten up children in the alley behind Geno’s. In court, she was free of charge after CTV footage of the interaction was retrieved, showing she was (mostly) innocent, though, she was still sent to the hospital anyways. Her mother had disowned her after she was arrested.

She resides in the cafeteria, serving food and greeting newcomers. It was either that or garbage duty. She likes hanging out with Kel sometimes, but to her, the guy really gets on her nerves most of the time.

Basil- Self harm / Suicidal thoughts (SH)

Was placed in the “major risk” area of the facility.

Basil was there when the accident happened. He stood at the stair well as Mari descended in seemingly slow motion, like an angel from heaven. But when she hit the ground, she looked more like the embodiment of hell. And Basil ran. He ran as fast as he could, away from the stairs and away from the house. He was a coward. After she was announced dead, Basil’s mental decline began quickly. It started with him skipping school, then meals, then just eventually going in for the kill with a pair of gardening shears and some pesticide. He survived, unfortunately for him, and was transported to the hospital for treatment. How horrible it was that Sunny and Basil had adjourning rooms.

Basil doesn’t leave his room unless required, and he straight up refuses to be put in the same room as any of his friends.

Mari- Deceased

Was killed on accident by Sunny during a schizophrenic episode.

But she isn’t really dead, is she? Sunny is keeping her alive. Just the force of his will keeps her on this earth, forever in sadness and longing for life again. She even still visits Sunny sometimes.

thinking about Kel’s grief-- its just. it’s interesting to me as a neurodivergent person. Kel gives Extreme Neurodivergent Vibes and the way that he grieved Mari’s death only really enhances those vibes. I’m not sure about other people’s experiences, of course, but I have noticed that neurodivergent people I’ve seen (and of course factoring in my own experiences with grief) tend to experience grief in different ways than other people. (of course. everyone experiences grief differently yada yada, etc.) in my experience we tend to bottle up all those feelings until they explode at a later date, and try to act as though it’s either not effecting us or hasn’t happened. When you look at the Omori game, at first it might seem that Kel was the one that was ‘least affected’ of the friend group, since Sunny and Basil were like That, Hero went into a depressive state, and Aubrey’s anger issues got worse and she found friends that were more supportive to her emotional needs. Comparatively, Kel didn’t have a period of (visible) depression or anger issues, he assumably threw himself into sports and making other friends while still having a soft spot for those that were left behind in the aftermath of Mari’s death.

And like-- first of all that’s a valid way to proceed after that. Kel’s allowed to try to move on quickly like he can escape grief if he just throws himself into sports and other friends and making other people happy. Of course. But he’s still Grieving. To me, at least, its clear whenever he’s interacting with Sunny, Basil, and Aubrey. He’s trying to act like nothing’s changed with Basil and Sunny, and with Aubrey he keeps appealing to their friendship. for the one that initially seems to have moved on the quickest, to me it feels like Kel is still hardcore holding onto those old feelings, sort of like Sunny and Basil to an admittedly lesser degree. He’s the one knocking on Sunny’s door, he’s the one that’s ‘protecting’ Basil by confronting Aubrey, and when confronting Aubrey in the church he tries to apologize.

at this point i am just. saying things. my bad

anyway the point that I sort of lost is that Kel feels really neurodivergent to me in his grief with his oscilation between trying to move on quickly and ignore his feelings of sadness over Mari, and then trying to keep his old friends together when given the chance as though they can just return to those happy days of being childhood friends

in conclusion: yes. I love Kel Omori dearly

Get to Know the information about Poppy!

Born on : May 16, 1926 (same birth as her brothers)

Personality : Enthusiastic, upbeat, kind, extrovert, sunshine character

Job : Poet, Musician, Soldier (wait what?)

Gender : Female (♀︎)

She's a part of the Clover family being a child of Fazio and Adele, twin sister of George, wife of Kyle, aunt of Suzie, and the great-grandmother of Melody! As a child, she was a pretty upbeat kid, always playing the piano off-key. Her father taught her how to play the piano. Her relationship with her family was great as well, especially her twin brother, they were always kind to her but she never knew why. When she was at school with her brother, she met a girl. Her name is Brenda Anderson (the Hopeful Rabbit). George’s heart began to beat fast. Poppy stared at him awkwardly as he tapped him on the shoulder.

In her adulthood, she was hired by the Aviary Jazz Club. Then she met Julie (the Ongoing Blue Jay), Julie hugged her tight and showed her the instruments. Poppy chooses the piano. Julie declares that she is a drummer, with a few beats and booms. While they finish practicing, Julie gladly welcomes her to the Aviary Jazz Club. When it was the day of Brenda’s performance, she took a deep breath. Julie told her to get ready. Poppy nodded. The girls started playing, and so did the bandmates. When the music started playing, Brenda started to dance. When the performance was over, she bowed, and Poppy cheered loudly. Suddenly, Brenda collapsed on the floor. Poppy gasped and approached her. She asked her to see if she was okay. Tears began oozing from her eyes. When Brenda died, Poppy burst into tears and buried her face in George’s chest, who was also crying.

She walked and bumped into a man whose name was Kyle. She fell in love with the lawyer, while she was picking up his cases. “Now, I have to go to court,” he said. “See you later!” Poppy swoons and falls to the ground. When Kyle declares that the witness is not guilty, Poppy hugs him. They got married and had a son, whose name is Charles.

Poppy doesn’t want her brother to be killed, so she writes a poetic note, leaves it for her husband, and goes to war. She was a chef and wrote poetic recipes for the girls to cook. Everything was fine until she heard an explosion. She quickly puts on the soldier’s uniform and rushes out. She rushes to see if her brother is okay. George wakes up and hugs her. She then got a piece of paper stashed in her uniform, it turns out that it’s a letter. Poppy laughs a little. Then she chucks a grenade far away to explode the other soldiers. When they won the war, the twins high-fived each other.

Poppy takes a walk to the park with her son. Everything was perfect until she collapsed on the floor. Charles rushes to her and takes her to the hospital. She is suffering from her unconsciousness and dies.

In the current time (2020) after her favorite great-granddaughter Melody attempted, she became slightly curious, so Julie (who died and is titled the ongoing blue jay) took her to a nightclub, she never "drank" before so she only agreed to the company. When they arrived, she was having a chance to play the piano when suddenly someone on stage began to sing and dance (insert jazz music). She almost immediately recognized her, it was Brenda!! After Brenda’s performance, she walked up to her wanting to catch up for lost time. At first, Brenda just thought she was just another fan, but later realized it was her old friend!

After a very long conversation, Brenda hugged her childhood friend. And after they both go home, Poppy gets a call from George (her brother). "Sister! Kel woke up!!" She was tired but that didn't stop her from rushing to the hospital, "I'm so sorry I'm late, golly Kel! How are you??" Poppy asked, "I'm fine Great-Grandaunt <:3" Kel said. When Kel recovered, she asked if she could live with Melody (her cousin) and visit Suzie in the weekends, they agreed but when they asked why, Suzie said "She'll tell you when she's ready".

It's been three months since our fight and that's also three months she been staying with Sylvie and I really miss her if I hadn't said those things to her I probably wouldn't be sleeping alone every night. And I've tried apologizing she ignores me I lock her in my office to get one on one she let me kiss her but still won't talk to me I try asking everyone for advice but they give me the stank eye for what I did well everyone except Stella she's the only person who would talk to me. But she's the reason I'm in this mess in the first place so taking advice from her probably isn't a good thing. Hey Kels what's on your mind Stella asked with a worried expression. Nothing much Stella I'm just trying to get Y/n to forgive me but I wouldn't have to be doing this if you would of just stayed away from me I would probably still have my girl

It's been awhile since our fight and Kelly has been trying to apologizing Obviously I haven't accepted his apologies because what he said really hurt I dont think I can forgive him yet.

I came into work with Sylvie expecting Kelly to there with some flowers or something but he wasn't he was sitting at the squad table laughing at something cap said turned and looked at me then back at the squad members which confused me first he was apologizing now he's not. It's kind of concerning Maybe he's done apologizing And ready to move on then I see Stella go over and then starts talking to Kelly and them. Sylvie pov

I see Y/n walking away from the scene in front of us I walked over to the squad table and looked between Kelly and Stella. Kelly you're gonna lose a really great, kind, amazing, sweet, loving, and caring girlfriend is you don't start seeing what Stella is doing to your relationship. And I know deep down you don't want that and for you to sit here and try to ruin a good relationship is fucked up and you know what Stella I really thought you were a good person never would hurt anyone especially here we are family and just to betray someone like that just to get their boyfriend is really really fucked up.

No what is fucked is that Y/n took in the wrong way Stella was just making sure I was okay it was a tough call you know you were there .

Yea I was it was a tough call for everyone even Y/n you know the body they found after the fire was put out was a person Y/n couldn't save and she was right there Matt had to pull her out fire because the building was gonna explode. That's why that day she went straight to put her things up she was crying her eyes out and you were here with Stella being a bad boyfriend not the other way around. I walked away not being able to keep my cool.

Y/n pov

Hey are you okay? I heard Sylvie ask

Not really what if my relationship is over?! It can't be over Kelly is the first guy to ever make me feel loved and that I'm not such a burden to everyone he actually cares about me I dont want that to be over I started crying Sylvie hugged and and said hey it's not over and if does leave you for her then he's not worth the tears. You're the best thing that has ever happened to him rocky just remember that you have whole crew behind you.

Yea thanks Sylvie I smiled at her she smiled back then the alarms went off duty calls. We make it to a house fire then a women is heard scerming for her son the house fully engulfed in flames chief Boden doesn't want anyone going in because it was already unstable but the lady is begging us to save her son that his name was oliver I knew I was gonna get in trouble for this but I ran into the house calling for Oliver no reply then I saw him laying there passed I froze for a second because I saw the man I didn't save on the call three months ago but then I heard my name being called it was Matt and Kelly i snapped out my daze and grabbed the kid made it to Matt and Kelly and ran out the building we watched as it collapsed his mother come running to us Matt stopped her as Sylvie and Violet were working on him he didn't have a pulse. I was silently praying he would make it. Sylvie looked at me and shook her head letting me know he didn't make Matt let the mom go she was screaming in agnoy Sylvie was comforting her I walked pass everyone. Everyone was tapping me on the shoulder everyone except Kelly and Stella. I went behind our truck then started crying we all got in our assigned trucks and went back to 51 as soon as we get there I went somewhere private to calm myself down then Sylvie found me and told chief Boden was looking for me.

Kelly pov

Y/n just loss another victim and she just walked past everyone and they all patted her shoulder but I didn't neither did Stella which is understandable. Then as soon as we got to the firehouse she went off to her little private room to calm herself down. I was gonna go talk to her but Stella pulled me into my office and started to talk to me

Do you really think she's gonna let you comfort her you yall are still fighting and she probably won't even acknowledge you Stella said. I don't care Stella she just lost another victim and this time it's a kid and right now I don't care if she doesn't want me there she still my girlfriend and I love her. Wow you still love after three months of not talking to you she probably doesn't even love you anymore so why don't you move on Kells to someone who won't do that to you like me I will never shut you out. Then it hit Stella was really trying to break us up why was I so blinded by that I should of noticed it three months ago. You should leave Stella, all this time you've been getting really close to me and now I notice how you were trying to break us up I really hope I didn't mess this up. Whatever Kelly you're missing out on what could've been something amazing. But go back to your bitxh. DON'T CALL HER THAT!!!! I yelled at Stella the real bitxh here is you. Stella slapped me then walked away. I went to look for Y/n and try to get her forgiveness. I saw Sylvie and asked where she was cause she's not in her little room. Hey Sylvie where's Y/n I need to talk to her it's really important. She's is Boden's office he wanted to talk to her about something. Thanks Sylvie I went to chief Boden's office then I heard yelling from both chief and Y/n. Then Y/n comes out tears on her face and stops and looks at me. Hey are you okay what happened in there. I just got suspended for what I did at the last call my night can't get shitter than this unless you are here to break up with me she said. No I'm not here to do that I'm here to actually here to tell that I'm sorry for what I did and for not seeing it sooner I'm sorry for not listening to about Stella and what her intentions were. She looks st with shock then comes too. Kelly I'm glad you finally see what she was doing we can talk more about this later but right now I just need leave with tears still running down her face. She walked off and went to collect her things and said bye to everyone as soon as she left I went straight to talk to Boden.

"Look, Sunny, if you want to do this recital, you need to practice more! You keep messing up, and this is really impor-"

"SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP! I'M SO SICK OF YOU GOING ON ABOUT THIS RECITAL! God! Violin is meant to be fun! It's not when YOU KEEP YELLING AT ME FOR NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH!" Sunny couldn't hold it in anymore. Mari was pushing him way too hard!

"Don't yell at me! I am helping you improve!" Mari's eyes flashed with anger.

Sunny's head felt like it was exploding. He was angry, and upset, and wasn't thinking clearly. He brought his hands up to cover his ears, accidentally dropping his violin.

He heard Mari gasp. He felt hands grip his shoulders, pushing him back, hard. Sunny stumbled, trying to stay upright.

Naturally, he pushed back. Eyes shut, he leaned forward as much as he could.

"SUNNY!" He heard a crash. Then nothing. Opening his eyes, Mari wasn't there anymore.

He ran over to the stairs. Mari lay in a heap on the floor, her leg bent at an unnatural angle.

"SUNNY! YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN SO MUCH TROUBLE WHEN I TELL MUM AND DAD!"

The recital didn't happen that night.

When Sunny's mum and dad came in, seeing Mari screaming on the ground and Sunny crying next to her, they rushed her to the emergency room.

Several hours later, she had been diagnosed with a broken knee, and it would take about 4 months to heal. She got a cast and was sent home.

The whole car ride home was silent. Sunny still felt bad, and Mari was on so many painkillers she couldn't think properly. Her kneecap had been split into three pieces, and while it didn't require surgery, it still hurt like hell.

"M-mari…I'm really sorry…I didn't mean to break your leg, I promise!" Sunny blubbered, still crying.

"It's ok Sunny, I know you didn't mean to. I'm still mad though! Even if I was able to get a purple cast." She smiled.

Sunny giggled. Everything was going to be ok.

☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

"Oh my god! Mari! Are you ok?!" Hero came rushing into Mari and Sunny's shared room with worry-stricken eyes and a plate of cookies.

"I'm alright Hero, it'll heal. Oooh, are those cookies! I'll take one!" Mari smiled.

Mari and Hero weren't technically allowed to date each other. Both dads had unanimously agreed that they would not date, and that was it from their perspective.

Of course, that would not stop the 15-year-olds. They would simply keep their relationship a secret. That had not stopped Kel, Aubrey and Sunny from finding out.

All three of them had promised to keep it a secret, mostly as a form of petty rebellion. It felt so good, so grown-up to keep a secret from their parents.

And so that's how it had been for 2 of the five years they had all been friends. It was a good arrangement.

Kel jumped, trying to get a cookie from Hero's plate. Hero stepped out of the way, laughing at his little brother's attempt.

"Heeeey! No fair! I want a cookie!" Kel whined as Mari laughed.

"No! They're for Mari because she broke her knee!" Hero had been so occupied arguing with Kel that he didn't see Aubrey and Sunny grabbing a cookie each and one extra for Kel.

Sunny silently handed Kel his cookie, biting into his own. Kel cheered, grabbing it greedily.

Hero groaned as Mari giggled and kissed him on the cheek.

☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

It was hot. Way, way too hot.

Sunny had to do extra chores and was grounded for 3 weeks because he accidentally pushed Mari off the stairs. He would have preferred almost any other punishment to this, this was terrible!

He was currently washing his dad's car, cold soapy water feeling amazing against his hot skin.

"Hey Sunny! Need some help?" Sunny turned to see Kel and Basil walking towards him, snacks and car washing supplies in hand.

Sunny smiled slightly, glad to have help and company, even if they weren't technically supposed to be here. But Sunny's parents were out, so they wouldn't know!

Finally, after what felt like forever, the three stepped back to admire a sparkling clean car.

"That took ages! Come on, everyone's probably still at the hangout spot!" Kel started running for the lake, pulling Sunny and Basil along with him. The smaller boys could barely catch up to him.

The three saw Aubrey, Hero and Mari walking into the bushes, heading to their hangout spot.

"HEY! WAIT FOR US!" Kel yelled. Mari turned around and waved at them. Kel ran to catch up while Basil and Sunny walked, still out of breath.

"Come on slowpokes! Mari's gonna cut up some watermelon for us!" Aubrey yelled, as Basil rolled his eyes.

"Yeah yeah, we're coming, don't worry." Basil and Sunny pushed the tree branches out of the way, the shade a welcome change from the sun.

They found Mari, Kel, Hero and Aubrey sitting on a picnic blanket, Mari slicing up some watermelon and Hero taking out the rest of the snacks.

It was a relaxing picnic, even with Kel and Aubrey fighting about three times an hour.

Eventually, the sun began to set, and they packed up and went home, laughing and playing as they went.

"Bye, everyone! See you tomorrow!" Kel yelled, running towards his house with Hero trying to keep up.

Aubrey waved goodbye and started walking to her house. It was just Sunny and Mari. They heard yelling coming from inside the house. Mari groaned.

"Wait here Sunny, I'll be back in a second. Don't come in, ok?" Sunny nodded silently.

It scared him. There was a lot of yelling in their house recently, and Mari had been working overtime to keep him away from it. Still, he knew it was happening. As Mari went over to the door, crutches making a clicking noise against the pavement, Sunny's heart sank.

After a few minutes, Mari came back out, smiling sadly. Sunny picked up his stuff and walked inside.

1 — First Impressions

Hiding In Plain Sight

Pairing: Commander Wolffe x Reader

Word Count: 3.1k

Warnings: Canon typical violence and direct parallel to the show

Summary: Follows the events of the first appearance of our beloved commander Wolffe and folding you into the story

“The fleet is holding its position, sir” Commander Wolffe reports to the tall Kel Dor Jedi Master gazing out the front view port towards the massive red planet.

“I think it wise, to report our position before we attack” He replies, turning to face his commander and walking past him towards the command control panel. Wolffe eagerly follows beside him.

“Skywalker's fleet is nearby, in the Bith system”

“Good. Perhaps he can reinforce us” Master Plo comments, knowing his favorite padawan learner will likely be in tow with Skywalker

“From what I hear, Skywalker's always ready for a fight.” Wolffe comments, his brothers Rex and Cody have told him some tall tales regarding the young and… ambitious General Skywalker.

“So I've heard” Master Plo agrees

Wolffe listens as the Generals and young Togrutan padawan speak, until the transmission begins cutting out.

“There’s too much interference sir, we’ve lost them” he reports, trying desperately to get the holo back up online.

You were just finishing replenishing your field kit when your com beeped indicating an incoming transmission, General Skywalker’s chain code. You zip up your kit and shoulder the bag, not even knowing what the mission is yet but knowing you should probably start making your way to the hanger.

“General?” You answer the com as you speed walk towards the hanger

“Busy Captain?” Comes his usual boyish and informal tone

“I think I’m about to be sir” You speed up your pace, hearing the sound of his own rapid footsteps, presumably also heading towards the hanger

“Hanger 3” he chuckles

“On my way” You disconnect the com, and break into a run to make it to the hanger

“The enemy ship is closing!” Commander Wolffe yells, informing all of the staff on the bridge

“Prepare for battle!” General Plo commands.

The bridge is alive with activity. Raising the shields, preparing the laser cannons, getting men into fighter jets ready to deploy on the General’s command.

“We're picking up a large energy reading from the target, sir” Wolffe barks, feeling anxiety rising up within himself, looking at the numbers… it’s a massive energy reading and it’s still growing

“Open fire!” General Plo shouts

“We're not in range yet, sir” Wolffe informs him.

Outside the front view port, the enemy ship shoots a massive purple plasma beam

“Brace for impact!” General Plo shouts

The plasma beam passes over the Triumphant, and the other two ships in the fleet behind the flagship. All systems on the ship immediately begin failing, the control boards sizzle with electricity and what little sanity has been maintained on the bridge seems to fall apart with it.

“We're losing all our power!”

“That energy field has left us defenseless!”

“They're tearing us apart one by one!”

General Plo gets on the coms and alerts the entire ship to the disaster

“Quickly! Into the pods!” He urges troopers into the pods, refusing to get in until the very last second “We don't have much time! Get inside! Hurry!”

The pod door seals and ejects from the ship, just in time for the Triumphant to explode and send the pods and tons of debris careening through space. When the pod slows up from the force of the blow, Wolffe takes a look around his pod to see who else is even inside with him. Sergeants Sinker and Boost, and General Plo Koon… that’s it? That’s all that made it into this pod? He hopes the other pods had more men in them.

“We've no engine, communications, or... Or life support recharge.” Wolffe indicates

“So, we'll just sit here and hold our breath.” Sinker says, honestly feeling rather hopeless about the situation

“Someone'll come looking for us, right?” Boost asks

“Let's get the power restored so we are here to be found” General Plo cuts them off, attempting to calm their anxieties by handling what parts of this situation could be helped in this moment.

You run through the doors of hanger 3, and see the back of Ahsoka’s little lekku as she darts up the ramp to her masters ship. You follow behind her and hit the button to close the ramp behind you and slide into a seat in the cockpit behind the Jedi and his droids.

“Someone call for a doctor?” you joke, strapping in as General Skywalker takes off

“Maker you’re quick when you want to be, thought we’d have to wait on you” Skywalker jokes powering up the ship and taking off quickly

“If it looks like I need to be somewhere in a hurry, people don’t ask where you’re heading and try to talk you out of it sir” You make yourself laugh “Speaking of, where are we heading?”

“The Abregado system” Ahsoka fills you in “Master Plo and the 104th need our help”

It’s been over three hours, Wolffe’s legs are starting to feel a little stiff “The air in here is getting a bit stale” he comments. A true observance, but he mostly just wanted to break the eerie silence that had fallen over the group.

“Don't look at me. It's Boost, sir. He only takes a bath when he's on leave” Sinker accuses his fellow sergeant.

“Save it. Just keep working on the pod, not your jokes” Boost snaps. These two are usually nipping at each other's heels and getting on each other’s nerves. At least that feels normal.

“Do you think we've got a chance, General?” Wolffe asks, hoping beyond all reason the General will say something to inspire a little confidence.

“I don't believe in chance, Commander. I know if we work together, we will stay alive, and someone will find us” General Plo says evenly. The 104th has always been under General Plo’s command, but they haven’t worked with him directly before this. This is one hell of a first impression to make on your commanding officer.

“With all due respect, General, strategically, it doesn't make any sense for someone to come look for us. If I was in command, I'd be hunting that weapon down” Sinker says a little dryly.

“I value your life more than finding that weapon” General Plo replies. There is something about his tone that makes Wolffe feel like he’s telling the truth. Many politicians, military officials and Jedi claim they care for their troops. But somehow can’t be bothered to use the chosen names of their men. Come to think of it, General Plo has never used… or even asked for his designation number.

“Sir! There's another pod out there!” Boost shouts, probably a little too loudly for this contained space. Everyone’s head’s snap towards the view port, to see the aforementioned escape pod drifting through space.

“If we only had power, we could contact them” Wolffe muses, trying to wrack his brain again for a possible way to jump start this heap of junk.

“Well, how about we just wave hello when the viewport comes around?” Boost shrugs. It’s not exactly a bad plan, but it certainly isn’t a good one.

General Plo extends his hand, and waves it purposefully. The other pod shifts, and slowly swivels so the viewport comes into view.

“They're dead!” Sinker’s horrified voice gives life to what everyone surely sees

The glass is shattered. The body of a fallen brother hangs halfway out of the pod, and another’s floats aimlessly away from the wreckage. It turns Wolffe’s stomach. He can’t tell from here, but he wonders who’s out there… and what happened to them.

“Someone busted that pod wide open” Wolffe says as the reality of this situation dawns on him

“We are not alone out here” General Plo says, and air of suspicion and concern in his usually calm voice.

“So what I’m hearing is, strictly speaking, we’re not supposed to be doing this?” You ask with a twinge of excitement, it’s an unspoken truth that you can practically get away with murder if you’re just following orders from your General. Going for a joyride with Skywalker and Ahsoka sounds like an adventure to you.

“Problem?” General Skywalker asks, glancing over his shoulder

“Not at all sir, just making sure I know how to answer if someone asks me where I am right now” you grin

“No, that's not it. This one goes there, that one goes there” Sinker corrects more forcefully than he means to. Maybe the air really is getting stale in here.

“Are you sure? We don't want to make things worse” Boost just sounds tired. He’d been on the nightshift before all this mess happened, now he’s been awake for over 24 hours and still trying to work the problem and restore power to the pod.

“How are we gonna make things worse?” Sinker on the other hand is feeling anxious, this small space feels like it’s getting smaller by the minute.

“When you ask for trouble, you should not be surprised when it finds you” General Plo says over his shoulder, hoping to dispel some of Sinker’s nervous energy with his attempt at a joke.

“I think trouble already found us, sir” Sinker has hopelessly

“What if we connect these two wires right here?” Boost says clamping two wires together and glazing over to his commander at the control panel.

“I'm getting something” Wolffe says, tuning into the radio frequency

“This is pod 1977! We are under attack! Is anyone out there?” Another voice comes over the coms.

“It's one of our other pods!” Wolffe feels immensely relieved. Not that they’re being rescued but that there are others. Other’s survived this calamity. His brothers are alive!

“I repeat, we are under attack! Is anyone out there?” The voice is panicked. Wolffe’s joy turns to ash in his mouth.

“That signal is weak. They must be close by” General Plo says, looking over Wolffe’s shoulder.

“They've locked on to our ship! They've locked on to our ship!” The voice is full of a kind of fear Wolffe has never experienced “Our position is mark 12 at. 26”

“I have visual contact” Wolffe says pointing out the viewport

“Pod 1977, do you copy?” General Plo says into the mouthpiece

“The droids are hunting for survivors. They're cutting through!” Suddenly the sound of laser cutters slicing through metal and screaming is the only sound that can be heard. No one in this pod makes a sound. All they can do is listen, watch through the viewport as their brothers are murdered in front of them by roaming droids in a skipper designed to pry open these kinds of pods.

Then there is silence.

“Things just got a lot worse” Sinker breathes out

“What is it, Artoo?” you ask turning to the little astromech who’s beeping away behind you

“He thinks he's got something on the emergency channel” Ahsoka says excitedly

“Can he trace it?” Anikin asks

Artoo beeps in response and transferred the tracking coordinates to the main computer

“Well let's get going” Anikin pilots the ship towards the distress call.

Wolffe peers out the viewport. The droid skiff is getting closer, they’re heading towards the pod. “I think they see us” Wolffe points out

“It is time to go” General Plo says calmly

“Go? Where are you going, sir?” Wolffe is a little taken aback

“Outside, to destroy the enemy. I can withstand the pressure for a brief time. Put your helmets on” General Plo instructs Sinker and Boost as he heads towards the door.

“If you say so, sir” Sinker says putting on his helmet and sealing the bottom

“This is a difficult situation, but there remains a possibility we will survive” General Plo tells them. It’s not a promise, but it’s a chance.

“That's good enough for me. Come on, let's go” Boost seals his own helmet and lines up behind the General.

“Wolffe, keep the communications signal alive. It is our only chance someone will find us” General Plo instructs Wolffe before leaving the pod.

“Let's just hope someone's looking for us” Wolffe says under his breath, turning his attention back to the control panel.

Wolffe hears more than sees what’s going on outside. Exchange of blaster fire. Shouting on the roof of the pod, the droids making some kind of retort and return fire. Wolffe focuses on keeping the signal alive and praying to the maker that someone out there is searching for them and will pick up the signal. His head is starting to feel a little fuzzy. With no functioning life support system, he’s running out of oxygen. He tries to remain calm, but he can’t help but worry that no one will come. Or no one will come in time… Suddenly there’s crackling over the radio and a female voice on the other end.

“ —there anyone out there? Come in! This is Captain—” the audio is spotty at best “Is there anyone out there? Come in”

“Someone’s out there! They must be close!” Wolffe says through the coms to his men and the General. Someone is looking for them, they have a chance!

“Keep the signal alive, Commander” General Plo commands. Even he is feeling cautiously optimistic.

But as the battle continues, the pod is taking more and more damage. Wolffe clings to this woman’s voice. He wills this woman to keep following the trail, to not give up on him. But the signal is fading.

“We're losing the signal! The pod can't take much more damage!” Wolffe tells the General. No response. Instead he watches as Sinker goes flying towards the clankers, blasting all the while. He also hears the General’s lightsaber ignite. Wolffe turns his attention back to the radio. The voice is so faint. Wolffe’s heart sinks.

Sinker and Boost turn their coms back on so he can hear all of them speaking outside the pod.

“Well, General, this is another fine mess we've gotten into. I don't mean to say I told you so, but I never believed anyone would come looking for us” Sinker says

“Sergeant, why are you so certain no one is coming?” The General asks. Wolffe looks up towards the ceiling. The voice on the radio is gone. The pod is too damaged. He looks up towards the ceiling, where he guesses his brothers and general are holding on so they don’t drift away. He feels like he’s drifting away. He can’t even stand anymore, all he can do is sit on the floor and try to breathe as normally as he can with the limited oxygen and rising fear of his own disorientation.

“We're just clones, sir” Sinker says with a grim honesty “We're meant to be expendable”

And that’s the truth of it. The truth all clones know. That we are born to die.

“Not to me” General Plo does not hesitate and has no hidden meaning to his words. He genuinely cares.

Before Wolffe or any of the others can really process this exchange of words, a blinding light suddenly engulfs them.

“There they are!” Ahsoka cries out in glee

“Ready tow cable” General Skywalker orders.

“Cable loaded, General” you respond

The tow cable deploys and drags them into the ship. You get out of your chair and rush with Ahsoka to the cargo hold to assess the men for any wounds or other need for medical treatment. The doors slide open and you sling off your medical pack in favor of helping the two men down off the roof of the pod

“Are you okay, Master Plo?” Ahsoka asks, assisting her friend and mentor.

Wolffe propels himself forward, and managed to get a hand on the viewport of the door

“There's someone still in the pod!” You manage to get the door open and hear it hiss as air rushes into the space. The man inside slumps forward into your arms. You get him down to the floor and start assessing his vitals.

“Will they be all right?” General Plo asks you, nodding his head towards Wolffe but meaning him as well as the other men.

“Their pressure suits gave them some protection, but we’re gonna need to get him to a medical frigate. Now” you nod towards Ahsoka.

When Wolffe opens his eyes again, sterile white light floods his eyes. He blinks a few times, it does nothing to dim the offensive overhead lights, but it does bring the world into focus. He struggles to sit up from the bed he’s laying in, he’s got a gnarly headache. He hears more than sees the door to his room open, and the lights in the room dim a little bit.

“Commander Wolffe?” a voice calls out to him

He turns his head and sees you standing in the doorway, he stares at you, watching your face come into focus. He recognizes you… seen you around the various bases maybe.

“Captain…” he can’t recall your name

You kind of catch on that he’s fishing for your name, whether he ever knew it or not, this is your first time officially meeting one another. You tell him your name “But people just call me Doc”

“You were the voice responding to the emergency channel” he says accepting the cup of water you hold out for him “How did you know to come looking for us?”

“General Skywalker’s new padawan is very fond of your General. She would stop at nothing to rescue you guys” you explain, taking a seat at the edge of the bed with him

“That sounds about right when it comes to General Skywalker and Ahsoka” he says with a shrug “Are you the medic for the 501st, I thought Kix was their CMO”

“He is, I’ve been transferred around quite a bit the last few months. The 501st are interesting to say the least, never a dull moment in that group” you chuckle lightly

“Never a calm moment with that lot either” Wolffe scoffs “You should transfer to the 104th we… well… we used to run a tight ship”

It is at that moment, Wolffe realizes that his entire legion is gone. He, Sinker and Boost are all that remain.

“There are other men already assigned to the 104th that have already arrived on base” you tell him “But they will never replace your brothers”

“Thank you Captain” he says with a grateful look. Too often the feelings of loss and grief are swept under the rug or dismissed during war. General Plo has always encouraged his men to take time to process their trauma when time permits. It’s nice to see someone else serving in the GAR following that philosophy as well.

You stand again from the bed. “Well Commander, I am happy to report that you are cleared to leave when you are ready. I hope I get to see you around sometime, just try not to land up in a med bay again”

“I’m serious about that offer Captain” he says after you as you walk towards the door “If you’re bored of the 501st’s chaos, the 104th would love to have you”

“Thanks Commander, I’ll look into it” you smile over your shoulder

“Hey doc” he says

You tilt your head, listening

“Thanks for not giving up on us out there”

the idea of hikikomori kel has been haunting me these past few weeks so i’m going to dump the au i made for it here

MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRETY OF OMORI BELOW THE CUT!!!!!

- kel & hero played sports together; when hero injured his acl playing in a game, he dropped out of the hobby to focus on schooling. in doing so, he also pressured kel to focus on school, since he had been prioritizing sports above school. they end up having an argument, where hero is disappointed in kels school performance, and kel is bitter that he could treat it like a simple hobby when he was so effortlessly good at it, and now just because he got hurt, he wanted kel to give up all the progess he'd made

- they fight near the stairs, and when kel shoves hero, he shoves too hard—sending him over the banister.

- kel freaks out, aubrey was there to witness it. aubrey is the one who mentions the jumprope hero had gotten kel as a childhood (~7 years old) when kel had first expressed interest in wanting to do sports like hero—and so they hang hero, and that’s the ruse

- aubrey and basil were pretty close; basil invites aubrey to his house a few weeks after the funeral. when she’s there, he brings up the photo album, and aubrey agrees to look through it with him

- when basil leaves for a moment, she has a mini breakdown and tears apart the photos with hero in them and when basil comes back and sees what shes done, he kicks her out of his house in fear of hurting her; aubrey goes back home while basil calls sunny telling him he’s scared hes going to hurt someone or maybe himself

- sunny shows up to his house and calms him down, telling him that he needs to do something with his emotions or else hes going to end up doing something he regrets. a few days later, basil starts his descent into something like being a delinquent similar to canon aubrey

- its only after basil really hurts someone in his temper (kim) does sunny step in full time with basil. when basil starts to go overboard, sunny is always there to calm him down

- kim forgave basil pretty much instantly, especially after seeing how distraught he was when he realized the damage he caused. thus, kim accepted him and sunny into her social circle (the hooligans)

- instead of sports like canon kel, sunny is genuinely into the violin. after hero’s death, mari stopped playing the piano, associating it with the many times hero watched or sat in with her as she played. sunny was initially upset, but they ended up talking it out and that was that

- in this AU, sunny started violin shortly after mari decided to play the piano after noticing how much attention it got her from their parents; it didn’t really succeed at getting his parents attention, but his friends would sit in during his lessons and encourage him through it, and he slowly started to associate it with good memories rather than bitter ones

- mari homeschooled for a year, keeping up with her studies even in her grief; to honor his memory, she ends up going to medschool to finish hero’s dream of being a doctor

- she was really distraught over his death, falling pretty deep into depression. however, she ends up seeking help and reassurance from sunny (sunny had a period of time about a year earlier where he had p severe maladaptive escapism, reminiscent of his canon habits) since he’d gone through a vaguely similar thing

- they do end up having a pretty nasty argument, much like canon kel and hero, because sunny feels like mari is putting too much pressure on him to constantly be there for her, and mari feels like sunny isn’t even trying to support her through a very hard time in her life and keeps pushing her away

- after mari explodes at sunny during their argument, and sunny completely breaks down, absolutely bawling and sobbing, she realizes her mistake and they end up resolving it in the loosest terms possible

- mari starts doing regular online therapy sessions until she can find a therapist near her college, and apologizes for putting pressure on sunny. sunny forgives her pretty much instantly, but he does still block out the memory of their fight because it’s such a sore spot—mari doesnt block it out so much as sunny does, but she will look back on it pretty forcefully when she lapses into self-punishment habits. neither of them have really dealt with it or worked through it properly

- mari has a pretty bad habit of not telling her therapist things because she feels like she has to hold on to a certain image and doesn’t want to ‘ruin’ her therapists concept of her, so she doesn’t bring up her and sunny’s fight (until after kel and aubrey end up confessing the truth, and she realizes that she never really got over it)

- sunny retreated into his friendship with basil hardcore as a way to cope, especially after basil started embracing his more brash, angry feelings. the pair relies on the other for absolutely everything

- when mari went off to college, their dependency worsened considerably—when sunny or basil would lapse into old habits, they went to each other, and only each other. with sunnys absent parents, and basils grandmothers worsening health, they both felt like they had no one else to turn to

- this led to multiple secrets and habits being shared between the two; basil sneaks into sunnys house when he has bad nightmares, basil signs when he talks when he’s around sunny to mirror him, all sunny has to do is be there and he basically act as the in-game ‘calm down’ skill for basil, sunny goes to basil if he needs to be grounded/is dissociating too badly on a given day to function properly, etc

- a lot of it is technically harmless, but relying on the other does weigh on them after those four years, and because its routine neither of them want to ‘ruin’ what they have just because of their own feelings

- ^ in an attempt to stop feeling so weighed down by these things, sunny takes up regular drawing and journaling sessions, and basil learns how to crochet and embroider

- ‘white space’ still technically exists, as does ‘omori’ (isn’t given a name in this au) acting as an avatar for sunny, partly because sunny is remarkably bad at handling emotions and needed a reprieve from feeling anything; to him, the best way to handle his grief was to process it on his own, through someone he felt wasn’t him. as such, neither headspace, nor blackspace exist, as he isn’t escaping or suppressing anything

- ^ this above point is mainly because it opens up the opportunity for post-confession kel/sunny bonding

- kel became a shut in due to his extreme grief and guilt—because he literally cannot maintain a happy image because of that guilt, he ends up running away from his problems. instead, he tamps down all his problems and trys out something else; sunnys coping mechanisms

- sunny told the group once, after what happened the year before heros death, that he had really bad escapism issues; creating a false reality in his head that he used to daydream hours and hours away in

- unfortunately for kel, it works a little too well, and he becomes a full time hikikomori. his headspace isn’t as expansive as in canon, but it does get the job done

- he goes by ‘iko’ in his dreams, and unlike omori he isn’t the silent, achromatic avatar; he’s the brightest, and chatty. a representation of how he feels he could be in real life if he “wasn’t such a coward.”

- hero is the one on the picnic blanket, though it’s closer to a caricature of a buffet—reminiscent of his cooking hobby—and aubrey is the one who gets lost every time; sunny, basil, and mari are the ones in kel’s party. much like the canon roles that are being swapped, mari is the healer, basil is the heavy-hitter, and sunny is the wild card/all-around.

- kels headspace mari acts much more like hero than IRL mari does; she acts as an avatar for kel to have his brother with him while not having to witness him being injured or dying in battle

- basil is open with his worries and anxiety, influenced by kels desire and worry that basil didnt feel safe enough around the rest of them, and thats why he always retreated into sunny

- sunny is very reassuring towards kel, speaking mainly to him to represent kels bitterness over him and basils closeness, and his worries that IRL sunny never liked kel and only tolerated him

- aubrey acts a lot like canon basil; shy but bubbly, timid but energetic, worrying but eager; she acts representative of kels hatred toward himself for feeling like he ruined aubreys life, and caused her to be to paranoid all the time. while her and kel still argue in his dreams, it’s lighthearted and easily resolved, unlike the major crime both of them took part in, which kel believes can never be resolved or absolved in any manner

- aubrey retreats back into herself, her normally quelled anxious side high-strung and prominent for four years straight. she’s absolutely terrified of her friends finding out and leaving her behind; of mari, her big sister, being disgusted of her, of basil, usually kind and timid, looking at her with hatred, and of sunny, aloof and non-expressive sunny, being so clearly ashamed of her actions.

- she’s an anxious mess constantly, and often cries when she gets even slightly angry or frustrated, much to her hatred. she does her best to become as invisible as impossible, keeping the truth close to her all the while

- basil ends up taping the photos together, but he drops a few at school, caught up in the heavy last-day-of-school crowd. aubrey picks them up and brings them to him in the park to return them—around the same time sunny ends up dragging kel out of the house.

- sunnys mom and kels mom are very close, and sunny had overheard them talking about how they were most likely going to move if kel didn't improve, especially now that kels mom was pregnant with sally (about 3 1/2 years after the initial incident) and so sunny doubles down in his efforts to speak to kel, holding onto the bare hope that everyone can reconcile again

- basil assumed that aubrey took the photos from him and freaks the fuck out—screaming and lashing out at her. the rest of the hooligans dont really understand, because he’s never messed with aubrey—he usually just ignored her—but since he seems so genuinely upset, they are in full support of him, thinking that she must have done something pretty bad to get him worked up like this

- sunny drags kel all the way to the park, kel having opened the door a few minutes after he knocked---right when sunny started messing with the doors lock audibly. when they get to the park and sunny sees whats happening with basil and aubrey, he steps in

- sunny ends up breaking everything up, but basil, still tense and agitated from the fight, sees kel and spits out the first thing he thinks of, which happens to be mocking kel’s way of grieving his brother

- he immediately regrets it, but he knows he’ll do something he’ll regret even more if he sticks around so he books it and resolves to tell sunny so that he can properly say sorry when hes calm

- sunny apologizes to kel on basils behalf, knowing that basil will apologize anyway, and the pair continue on a string of events basically the same as the canon first day, save for the gift buying. mostly just exploring really.

- much like canon sunnys warped perception of reality, it's not uncommon for kel to not see the railing---he literally just wont register it at all, so it looks like theres no banister near his stairs, similar to canon sunny not being able to see the closet door to the left of the staircase.

- also similar to the canon closet, the small shed kels parents have in their backyard housing the sports equipment also doesnt register to kel

- on the second day, kel opens the door to both sunny and basil. basil invites him outside, and all three of them end up going back to their old hangout spot, where basil ends up apologizing to kel profusely, saying that it wasn't fair of him to have said that, and that even if it wasn't an excuse, he was worked up and agitated at the time

- kel doesnt really understand why basil is apologizing, since he figured he deserved to be called out on how he reacted to a death he caused, but he accepts it and forgives him anyways

- sunny brings up aubrey to basil, and says that they at least need to talk about what happened without going at each other first, but after seeing how kel flinched at the mention of her, decides that they can all help with some of the preparations for mari to come back from college for a bit

- mari ends up showing up in the evening, after basil had left to go speak to aubrey, when kel and sunny are at the house. shes excited to see kel out and about, and ends up suggesting a sleepover for all of them, and they all agree.

- ^ this would have a conversation much like the optional, canon one you can have with kel in the graveyard, where sunny mentions him and maris fight. sunny makes a reference to wanting to stop blocking it out and hopefully getting a chance to talk about it with mari while shes there.

- ^^ also, similar to the canon line after aubrey pushes basil into the lake, it would have themes and direct parallels to what happened with hero and kel (e.g.: 'i know she didn't mean it' 'i just wanted her to leave me alone' 'she expected too much of me because of her own feelings' etc)

- on the third day, basil and aubrey are at the house by the time kel wakes up. basil explains that aubrey explained herself, and even if the photos were a sore subject, he was willing to try to work past it. mari makes a breakfast dish that hero used to make, and even though kel eats it, its so close to heros version that he ends up vomiting anyway, though he blames it on poor eating habits instead

- they kinda just laze around, playing old games and catching up on the mundane things that have been happening. its after everyone lays down and starts falling asleep that things go wrong.

- aubrey declines sleeping in the living room with everyone else, and mari directs her to sunnys current bedroom---shes cracking under the stress of seeing everyone and doesnt think she can handle being in the same room as all of them while they sleep pretending everything is fine

- after everyone is asleep, kel ends up going over to check on aubrey bc of his own guilty conscience, aubrey is staring at the stump of the tree heros body was hung from, which was just barely visible from sunnys window

- confrontation scene happens, im not sure what given weapons they would use?? i guess kel took a knife from their kitchen and aubrey had... something. maybe they were just bare-handed beating each other i didnt really think about this part too much

- unlike canon, i don't think there would be any major things lost like sunnys eye---instead, aubrey was the one who got nearly blinded, since i'm going to say that kel had the objectively better weapon out of whatever they were fighting with

- kels 'omori' fight against his alter ego sees the color palette slowly oversaturating with each phase, until it looks kind of like the end frame floating mirror jumpscare, including the distorted expression. like canon, if he chooses to give up, he'll jump off the roof. if he chooses to continue, he'll end up following a shadowey silhouette of aubrey through the hospital to her hospital room

- in this AU, i'm going to say that both aubrey and kel are eventually forgiven---in the loose order of mari, basil, and sunny.

- mari was the first one to forgive them, even if she had reacted badly at first. she was more sad than angry, really, and after contemplating what had happened, and how she would feel if the roles were reversed (a nod to canon), she forgave them both, though recognizing that their relationship might be strained as they worked through it

- basil ended up forgiving them next, ultimately coming to terms with it and the explanation that actually made sense to him; part of his anger came from the fact that he just didn't understand why hero would do something like that since there was, literally, no warning. knowing the truth gave him the closure that he desperately needed, and he was thankful that they told the truth even if it hurt

- sunny ends up being the last to forgive, mainly because the confession came right after he made a resolution to himself to start fully working through and coming to terms with heros death. he thinks about it for a while, and takes the time to himself to recognize what they both did and work through his feelings concerning the both of them; he does end up forgiving them in the end, because this is my au and i want a happy ending
