What’s a DR you want to gush about, but haven’t had the chance?

OH MY GOODNESS I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!

so the dr that i’ve been really missing is my 2006 indie kid dr which i call “zooey-inspired” because of zooey deschanel and her typecast

basically i’m a sophomore in high school and i’m the quirkiest manic pixie dream girl you’ve ever met in your life. i listen to indie rock on my discman and i went to see juno in theaters and i read classic literature in class.

i also scripted that finn wolfhard is my age and he goes to my school and we’re dating. he’s like a loner rocker kinda guy and he invites me to all of his band practices so i can just watch and admire him. we also are super codependent and literally do everything together. practically all our free time is spent at the movie theaters. OH AND OUR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ARE SO ICONIC!! first we’re margot & richie tenenbaum, then we’re billy & layla from buffalo 66, and then we’re victor & emily from corpse bride. and the whole relationship is very lowkey, but super addictive. we’re just so in love and obsessed with each other.

not to mention that i get every role i want in theater. i get to play all of my dream roles and im gonna be my theatre teacher’s favorite student!! i finally get to play rosemary in how to succeed in business without really trying AND juliet in romeo and juliet. plus people are actually gonna clap for me and be proud of me and bring me flowers 🥺

and my style is so iconic. i do 60s makeup a lot and kinda use iconography of edie sedgwick because she’s perfect. but i also wear a lot of patterned tights and mary janes and berets. pretty much just giving a full 1960s swining london vibe thats so against the norm and cool. OH AND I GET TO HAVE A FLIP PHONE!! i love late 2000s tech it’s so nostalgic. i’ll have a portable dvd player and i’ll burn cds for finn and ill take photos on my nikon coolpix camera. and im gonna be able to drive and my car is a yellow volkswagen beetle which is totally iconic in its own right.

What do you think Light would be if not a detective?

I like to think Light would become an idol after getting scouted, then go into acting with the goal of using his newfound fame for activism. Very, ah, unlikely, I know. But its a fun thought 🙈

What's your non-detective career for Light?

Okay!! This is a fun question and I've been turning it around in my head for a couple days lol. Apologies in advance, my brain took this not as "what do I think/like" but as "how would I write this" and boom, I ended up overthinking it and making a couple of AUs....again. Hope it's at least amusing!

Actor AU. I actually really like this AU, entertainment-industry!Light sounds really fun, and I don't think your idea is unlikely! Now I don't see him as the sing-and-dance type of idol, but a model and then actor? Yup, I can see this, and I think it would be really fun to explore Light's propensity to live in an act, and make that not only his daily life, but also his career. So the way this AU would start is fairly simple: he'd be walking, and some famous person, probably Misa, would be doing a public shoot. The male lead doesn't show, so she'd point Light out in the crowd and make the crew add him to the shoot as her boyfriend. The photographer wouldn't protest cause Light is handsome, and MisaMisa is a beloved idol, so why not play along? Light would be annoyed but would also play along cause he's a 'nice guy' (and also cause they'd pay him, so easy money.) Plus they would promise not to reveal his face, which is key here. In Light's mind, it's an ego boost, so why not? But, of course, the pictures do get out, showing his face and 'devoted boyfriend act,' they're well received by the public. So now Misa won't shut up about him in interviews, starts to insist they're dating, and Light gets some small fame. He's the 'prince type,' and when Misa moves into acting movies, she wants him to have a role, and they give him something small. Light kinda doesn't want to, kinda does, but is mostly annoyed by the 'small role' thing and wants to show them he can do any 'stupid acting job.' And so he does do it, and plays the role very very well, and from there he gets popular. Light starts an acting career, he does it part-time alongside Uni (which is too easy for him, so he'd bored and has free time lol). The acting jobs also pay very well which is his main concern, since they'd help him get his own place. He also finds he doesn't hate it; it's more interesting than tutoring jobs at least. By this point, he's been typecast as the romantic male lead character or the second male lead, a prince type. Acting is easy for him, he knows what emotions to put on, and so the jobs are pretty easy for him while also building his fame. Eventually, he does this more full time as the roles get bigger, and as you said he also always speaks up for Just Causes in interviews. (to both build his reputation, but also to justify it to himself that he's going this for a 'good reason'). Light developed got a very clean public image, while in the background he's experienced enough shady things in the industry that he learns how to handle it and gets good at buring his opponents. He sees it as an interesting bonus to acting, lol. Now, here's where the AU gets fun; Light grows bored of generic romance movies, and eventually picks up more complicated scrips. Historical dramas, thrillers, etc. These are more challenging, more interesting, and he soon realizes he can slowly start letting his 'real' self out for the first time in his life, shocking the viewers with his 'realistic acting' in much darker media and roles. Then he'd revert to his good-and-humble prince self in public. He'll be known as a genius actor with a great personality. While internally, he'll also get catharsis by playing darker roles and exploring the emotions he was never able to in his daily life. The act becomes the truth, and the truth the act. It's a cool reversal! (Bonus points if L one day sees a darker movie of his and is watching very intently and goes "......he's not acting." And gets interested in Light. Boom, I shoved lawlight in there too!)

Politician AU Okay, now for a darker career path for Light, another AU that I really like to think about: Politician Light Yagami. But this one is actually not a 'If Light wasn't a detective' AU, it's one that takes place years in the future, after the detective bits. In this AU, Light did go to the NPA, climbed the ranks, and eventually he achieved his canon goal of being Director of the NPA. Probably in his 30s, a stupid young age, and everyone is in awe. And Light likes it for a while, he enjoys the power, but then he stats to slowly come to terms with the fact that crime is not the real enemy, its politics. That he can't fix the real problems just by getting rid of the symptoms (criminals) but that it's the sickness itself he has to eradicate. Light gets jaded over the years here, his 17-year-old naivety is gone, and he finds even the Director of the NPA has to bow down to other people (which he hates). But he tells himself it's cause he still doesn't have the power to enact real change. But, most characteristic of all? Light is bored, probably gets there within 3-5 years as the Director. It's boring now, he's reached the top, found it to be unsatisfying, so...now what? Another 20 years of this? Nope! Now, I don't know anything about the Japanese political system, but I know that Light Yagami, using his position as a political basis, would then run for some type of public office. He'd hand the NPA to a puppet he cultivated, and move on to more powerful positions, climbing higher and higher. His hands would get so dirty, and he'd do some truly horrific things, but in true Light fashion, he'd justify it as being 'for the greater good.' After all, the system is corrupt, and Light is "the only one who can fix it," and only by temporarily playing by their rules can he take charge. Or so he tells himself. But really, Light just lives for the thrill; the political enemies to outsmart, the people to set up, the 'bodies' to climb over, he lives on it, even while always telling himself it's for the greater good. And to his credit, he does make positive social changes (he needs social support in politics, after all) and he develops a great reputation in both his offices, and as his stint as head of the NPA (since crime went down in his hands.) People trust him, voters like him, and he looks great on a newspaper or magazine cover. He's also very clean politically, because no one can pin him down for anything. Only his fallen opponents know the truth, but even they doubt it sometimes. In this AU Light Yagami would climb to the greatest social position he could get in Japan....only to eventually realize that the victory of that bores him, too. So he'd have to come up with new goals, new methods, and maybe he'd even turn his eyes on neighbouring countries that are "chaotic" and "ruining his perfect vision of the world." (Let's squeeze L into the AU here, cause someone has to stop Light from starting World War 3.) Not sure how this would all end, but history would remember him as either a revolutionary, or a terrible dictator. The type of politician no one ever wants to see again.

And, well, there you go!! Two career paths that I can see Light pursuing, and best of all two stories that I think would be interesting to see unfold! Thank you for the fun question!

Psycho Analysis: Gus Fring

(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)

Breaking Bad is known for its fantastic cast of characters, all of whom have some level of critical acclaim and iconic status. Seriously, go to Wikipedia and go to any character’s page from the show (basically every major character has one) and look at the “Reception” part, pretty much all of them are universally beloved. Chief among that crowd is the only villain in the show to give our rascally villain protagonist Walt a run for his money, the criminal mastermind that is Gustavo “Gus” Fring.

If you think I’m going to do anything other than add to those heaps of praise, you’re surely mistaken; I love Gus as much as anyone else who has seen the show. But where most are willing to overlook certain aspects of the character that don’t work so well because he is cool and gay, I acknowledge those flaws and love Gus anyway. We are not the same.

Motivation/Goals: Gus is a businessman, plain and simple. Be it Los Pollos Hermanos or his secret meth business, Gus wants perfection in every aspect of his professional life. That being said, he’s a pretty fair boss, and if you pull your weight you will be rewarded; he treats his employees at Los Pollos Hermanos so well that you know the show takes place in a fantasy world, because no boss is that nice. And he was way too lenient with Walt all throughout that man’s career working with him.

Of course, Gus is also driven by revenge. Don Eladio, Hector Salamanca, and the rest of the cartel are responsible for the death of his lover Max, and Gus refuses to rest until the entire operation has crumbled, with only him left standing tall and Hecor lefty broken and crippled to be finished off last as he’s the one who pulled the trigger. It’s a very classic villain motivation, and it helps give a little bit of sympathy to a character who is otherwise too cold and mysterious to really delve into the mind of. At any rate, it makes it very easy to root for Gus and cheer him on as he plays his supposed superiors for suckers and orchestrates their downfalls all while coming up with dozens of plans to cover his own ass.

Performance: Giancarlo Esposito has such an air of elegance and menace to him when he’s playing Gus. You can really see why he man ended up typecast after this, playing cunning antagonists, because he really kills it here. He does have one incredibly major flaw, though: He’s not a native Spanish speaker like Gus is. This leads to pretty much any point where Gus is required to speak the language falling flat, especially since most of the time he’s up against actors who are actually fluent and even if you’re not a native speaker you can pick up on how clunky he is in comparison to Michael Mando or Tony Dalton.

Final Fate: Gustavo Fring got outplayed by both Walter and Hector, and the result is perhaps one of the single greatest villain deaths of all time.

As many have pointed out, it is genuinely hilarious how Gus hated Hector so fucking much that he refused to die in the same room as him. And hey, maybe this isn’t very accurate to how a person would realistically look after taking an explosion directly to the face… But it’s one hell of a cool visual. Sometimes it’s better to check realism at the door for the sake of symbolism and cool prosthetic gore.

Best Scene: I think it is genuinely hard to top Gus’ awesome moments, even if he doesn’t ever really get an entire episode of focus. I think his crowning moment, the moment where we as an audience and Walt as a character learn that us is not even remotely fucking around, is his silent preparations before he comes up to his lackey Victor and violently slits his throat in “Box Cutter,” before equally silently getting dressed once more. Right before leaving, he simply says, “Get back to work” before leaving a stunned Walt, Mike, and Jesse behind.

There’s also Gus taking down Don Eladio and all his capos in “Salud.” It’s such wonderful, beautiful vengeance, and it’s all made better by the fact Gus poisoned himself, went to the bathroom, neatly placed a towel on the floor and knelt down on it, and then induced vomiting. This man would pick the fruitiest way imaginable to save his own life.

Finally, there is his scene in “Fun and Games,” the first and only time we see Gus just out enjoying himself. We get to see him pretty obviously flirting with a sommelier, but as soon as the man leaves for a moment Gus makes the decision to commit himself fully to his mission and rule out the possibility of love again after what happened to Max. This is the moment where we see Gus fully become the man we know him as in Breaking Bad, and it’s honestly pretty tragic. He could have been happy if he’d just let go some of his hate, and maybe he’d even still be alive.

Final Thoughts & Score: Gus is one of the best villains ever to grave television, and considering he’s in a show filled to the brim with some of the greatest villains ever devised, that’s really saying something.

Part of what makes him so genuinely great is just how utterly unknowable he is. Over the course of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he is almost like a god of the criminal underworld, untouchable and mysterious. What very little tidbits we get of his past paint a conflicting picture that could mean any number of things, and at every other point he manages to command respect and fear from all those around him, with those not wise enough to do so ending up dead by his masterful machinations. It ultimately makes the single scene where we see him not doing business, the one where he flirts with the man at the bar, so much more impactful. We see that Gus has rejected his humanity, his chance at ever being happy again, so that he can be consumed by his work and his vengeance. Gus is what he is by choice.

It’s why, even if it’s not really “good” that Walt won, it is so satisfying and cathartic. Gus spends his screentime pulling off superhuman schemes and feats of vengeance, orchestrating the deaths of the entire Salamanca family and his own cartel superiors, and yet he is done in by an absolute bumbling buffoon of a criminal like Walt. It’s a classic case of David and Goliath, with the untouchable adversary being taken down due to viewing his foe as so far beneath him that he didn’t realize he was screwed until it was too late. Gus was sadly too smart for his own good, never bothering to consider the erratic chemistry teacher could ever pull off anything big enough to defeat him.

With all that, Gus gets a 10/10. With how much I love Gus and how I consider him one of my favorite villains ever, you might be wondering why I didn’t bump him up to a 10.5 to denote him being a cut above the garden variety 10. Well, Gus has one issue with his character that I feels really hampers him in crucial moments: His inability to speak Spanish. Giancarlo Esposito, despite being an absolutely fantastic actor in every other regard, does not speak Spanish and needs his lines given to him phonetically. Native speakers have called his accent stilted and unnatural, and it has led to moments that should be epic and powerful such as his monologue to Lalo before killing him becoming nonsensical gibberish to trained ears. Considering that character is a native Spanish speaker, this is an absolutely unforgivable and glaring flaw. It certainly doesn’t ruin the character, but it does hold him back just a little bit.

But it really does speak volumes that as soon as Gus is taken out, the quality of the villains just plummets. The final season has Walt facing off against a bunch of Nazis and fucking Lydia, the annoying businesswoman. The final season is still peak, but boy are those villains living in Gus’ shadow. In spite of his flaws (or, well, his singular but rather major flaw), he’s still one of the greatest villains in television history, and is up there with Walt and Saul as the greatest villains in the series.

ok I've watched 16 episodes so I'm answering this but forewarning I am SO BAD at actual rankings for ANYTHING and then ESPECIALLY characters I'll be like "this one is my favorite :))" and then want to talk about a different character all the time. I do that a lot I could make a list. but anyway let's do it

1. itadori. plucky anime protagonist is always gonna work on me it seems. love him he's so sweet he's a delight he's so silly I love him💖💖💖💖💖 also super interesting just by virtue of the whole sukuna thing which has been fun to watch cause sometimes it's funny as hell and then sometimes it's like oh yah that IS a demon right :/ anwayyyyy I love to see him on screen

2. fushiguro!! at this current point in time its moreso as a package deal with itadori type of thing, mostly cause I pick favorite characters by actually knowing them and I just don't feel like I really Know much about any of the characters yet, and most of his screen time is being gay rn. but I can tell he's gonna be really interesting. also I love his dogs🫶🫶🫶🫶 he has magic puppies🥹

3. zenin sisters. as a unit. something is Up there it’s obvious. (also that line from the one kyoto guy in the first exchange event episode?? "fushiguro has zenin blood, BUT (??? but??? emphasis on the but??????? the implications????) he's talented, even more so than the clan leader. *sideye at mai*" like. there's so much going on there I need to hear about it as soon as possible this is the first establishment that there are families Known in jujutsu circles and the zenin clan is one of them, but maybe not a good thing?? the emphasis that fushiguro has zenin blood (WHAT IS THE FAMILY RELATION??? ARE THOSE HIS COUSINS OR WHAT I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THAT TOO) *but* (<-with emphasis) he's talented. implies that these are contrasting facts. zenin clan sorcerer quality on a decline maybe? (especially cause both of the sisters (probably the future of the clan) are low grade sorcerers, even compared to their amateur peers) I don't know what's up and I need to know expeditiously

once again matt johnson proves that he Has it.

its a pity that this had to come out roughly at the same time tetris and air and who knows what other ridiculous "great product invention" movie. there is a painful feeling of trend following and i worry that this, being a smaller budget project made by a relatively unkown director, will get discarded as one more of the bunch.

it is not.

Matt, more than most directors, truly understands what makes movies cool. what makes a scene truly hit, for a line to be said with momentous pause and for that line to mean something, to cut deep.

also, more that most other movies of its ilk, it really dedicates time and effort to convey the actual technical achievements behind the product in question, the engineering challenges that had to be overcome. and most of all, the actual significance it had when it first showed up.

this was the phone that made the first giant leap towards turning phones into computers, this was the first phone that put the internet literally in the palm of your hand. when these men created this thing they created a substantial portion of the future, and they knew it, and matt johnson knew it. and he knew how to convey it.

it also teaches the painful painful lesson that it really truly never is about who did it first but who did it best. when the iphone shows up in the third act of this movie you can feel the crushing, overwhelming sense of defeat that turns this movie into a tragedy. and as all good tragedies, we as the audience go into it knowing how its going to end, which makes it hit all the harder.

but leaving the story besides and moving on to the creator himself.

matt is showing more clear than ever that he has his cliches and he has his patterns. i never saw a director typecast himself so consistently in whatever project he does. all his stories are about a friendship crashing and burning. all his friendships are comprised by two giant nerds, one the quiet, shy guy and the other the loud bombastic wacky dude (always played by matt johnson himself). all these friendships started with the characters embarking on some crazy ambitious project. (a school shooting in The Dirties, faking the moon landing in Project Avalanche, inventing a new phone in Blackberry, getting a gig at the rivoli in Nirvanna the band the show). often these stories either have a darkly comedic tone or are straight up comedies.

yet he finds the way of making these stories different between each other, they tend to talk about different things, albeit with the emotional core being eeriely similar time and again.

regardless, im happy to eat the same cake with slightly different frosting every so often as long as the cake is this well made.

and this cake is really freking good, is the kind of good that makes you pick it up randomly and not really feeling it while browsing a streaming service and end the night pumped up and loving the new marvelous discovery you just made.

fucking 9/10 movie right here, go watch it, this man deserves it and i want to see more of his work.

bruh a real one step forward five million steps back moment fr. we had samurai remnant (fun and enjoyable crossover event. only downside is only now i find out robot mozart and yui have the same voice actor and i aquiesced to not rolling her bc she wouldnt come home and now i am full of regret. tho to be fair robot mozart happened long after the event lol), valentines (awesome new servant! andromeda is cute and i feel completely neutral but not negative on the take on her character! charon was cool too), and white day (usually i am so irritated at the cut ins but charly is so good natured and honest i cant be mad at him. he just feels like the good energetic boy coming in to check on you every morning. and cyrano is just so peak -pacha meme- the rest of the cast was wonderful too). but then. oh then. you had to just fucking do main story stuff. like yea sure some cringily fanservice power level edge thing with d antes and j alter is inevitable and whatever. but bring sal into it??????? only to not give him fucking anything????? and then permanently delete him, lobo, and any other half tolerable avenger (angra ig. or kuroe?) bc the edgey op fanservice characters need their wangst. ugh. the plot isnt even out but i imagine its something like- sal is typecast into himself and hates every second of it, moz bullies him bc its moz and the feeling is mutual, but evil marie takes advantage of it and him and the fandom reads it as cute. same w d antes or j alter and him. im so done w their reaction to the trio it makes me just disgusted. if the two of them treated him better id be more on board but they dont. just bc sal believes theyre on the same wavelength doesnt mean its some cute fluffy nonsense you can just slice of life. i think it cuts personal bc ive believed to be on the same wavelength of others and thats why im so fucked up today is bc of what happened there. and above all i dont want sal to have to go through that sort of suffering, esp on top of all his other suffering.

also if i had a nickel for every time a fictional somewhat m arie a ntoinette has ruined the life of my favorite dead composer character i would have two nickles which is weird that it happened twice.

What’s your least written fandom right now? And who’s your fave character from it? Talk to me about them!! Please!!!!💕💕💕💕

Now this...this is such a great ask! Thank you sooooo much for allowing me this! So, there's actually five fandoms that I have for this blog that have never gotten a single ask sent in that I remember. I write for them, do posts for them that aren't asked for. Those posts get likes, and in a couple cases, reblogs, so I know I'm not writing to completely empty fandoms! Just never get requests for them! And I do love these fandoms and the characters, so let me rant here just a bit!

So, I've never gotten an ask for Ronin Warriors! I do love all the characters, but I'm biased as fuck, because I've been self-shipping with one of the characters here since I was 11...seriously, for well over a decade, I've found solace in little stories or in headcanons or fantasies with this character and they've really grown with me, in terms of self-shipping, over the years as I've grown and found myself.

That cutie there? That's Rowan Hashiba! I just have always loved his character. He's wildly intelligent, which any reader knows I always appreciate in a character. He's such a loyal friend, another soft spot of mine, but as a character comes across as both very stupid-smart and as a bit of an eccentric at points. I find him fun, funny, and there's something about him that makes me wildly curious about him, makes me want to think up and imagine his early life, what makes him tick, what makes him happy and sad, what he goes on to do with his life, etc.

I've never gotten a single ask for Kekkaishi! I have flipped favourites so, so many times. Every time I reread it, I have new favourites, but even during the initial read, I kept finding myself drawn to various characters at different points in the story. Overall though, I love all the Yagyo, or Night Troops, but especially this guy!

Masamori is such a complex, interesting character. He's got a very morally grey side to him, despite technically being a good guy. He's got huge, gaping character flaws, but he's also got a really big heart. He's a huge contradiction in a lot of ways and I could really see him being the villain in another story, typecast in that way, but at the same time, his role in the story of Kekkaishi as being on the side of good, but being unafraid to do bad things in the name of good?? It makes for such a deliciously fascinating character!

I have never gotten an actual request for Blush Blush! Which is sad, because it's such a fun and addicting game and all the guys are wonderful, for the most part)! There truly is someone for everyone in Blush Blush! My favourite though? Definitely Garret!

Just look at how cute he is! I love the visual interest of him and there's a really great contrast with him, a trope I always fall for, of this really gentle giant type character. He's usually very unintentionally funny and he has some of the best dialogue in the game to me and he just feels very sweet and fun!

I've also never gotten an actual request for GetBackers! Will I forever keep writing about it, despite not getting requests? Yes. Yes, forever. I love the anime so much, it was among the first I watched and it really does have that nostalgia and impact for me, for all its flaws. While I self-ship with Ginji, and am not ashamed to admit it because despite what large sections of fandoms say, it's perfectly normal and healthy to self-ship, my favourite is actually Haruki Emishi!!

Known as the Fresh Blood Joker, this guy is badass. Like, his blood is literally fucking explosive and how cool is that?? And he fights with a whip that's made out of the hair of the women in his clan! Though he was initially introduced as someone who turned traitor to his friends, there were reasons. And he did snap out of it, once he worked through the feeling of being abandoned by those who he cared about. He loves a good fight, but he's also a really good guy, someone who just wants to make people smile and laugh. Also, has some truly horrible gags and lines that always make me laugh.

Lastly, I've never gotten requests for Class of the Titans, though I do know there is still a very small fandom out there for it! It's an old cartoon but I swear it is so much fun and just a really interesting, light watch! I love all but one of the characters so picking a favourite was really, REALLY hard! But I settled on this cutie here!

I really did feel a draw to Odie's character! Again, another very smart guy, but someone not really taken very seriously. He comes from a friendless background and I do feel like he was a bullied kid, and I really connected with that part of his character and love how loyal he is to his friends now that he has them. There was also this really great episode where it seems like he turned traitor, but it was really just this fantastic long-con because Odie - he's always playing a couple steps ahead.

Bro I feel absolutely hurt by the fact that I can’t find fanfic content of TaiAli here. You mean I have to rely on my mind palace and make up scenarios of my pathetic husband?!

Got 1-3 and only finished Cinderella’s entire route as of now. Current thoughts I was smiling so widely throughout his route. I respect how much he loves legs lol. Not a big fan of Maeno but Red might be a cool love interest based on the description.

Also like its not just me, Red definitely looks like Kunihiro. He gets typecasted as a certain role it seems lol

Chapter 2 looks like its full of sadists from the store page art and I’m down for it. Also, considering how Kaguya acts in Chapter 1, I am so going for his route first. But y’know with the description essentially saying Gretel is a yandere, that may sway my opinion by a lot and I get hooked so hard.

Chapter 3, definitely the Wizard. I love Shoutan a lot but Snow really didn’t peak my interest at all and I heard from someone its more focused on plot than it is romance and if that’s the case, I might just skip it entirely. Keyword might. I am a bit of a completionist when it comes to otome…

Epilogue… I just remember when it came out how obnoxious Alice fans were. We get it, you love the tsundere. Not much for “true” routes and I’m not a fan of blondes in most otome scenarios. I do however love the story of Alice in Wonderland. Still debating whether to buy it or not. I guess we’ll see how fulfilling chapter 3 is.

Midnight (2021) Rewatch Live Blogging

I watched this in October 2021 after watching Squid Game and wanting more Wi Ha Joon and thought it was good enough but didn’t stick with me. However, I’m really craving thriller/non-supernatural horror shows/movies with little to no romance right now (very rare for me bc I rarely research for thriller/horror and am always into romance) and the November 2022 What We’re Watching episode for Certified Noonas mentioned it and I was like oh! I should rewatch. Maybe I’ll like it more this time.

lol this turned out to be very spoilery about Strangers From Hell as well, so it’s all under the Read More.

yeah, I remember this beginning. It also kinda reminds me of Strangers From Hell when Moonjo killed the journalist in the car and then called the cops pretending to have stumbled upon the dead body and also made a show of being very affected.

I don’t remember Choi So Jung much, does she die too? Actually something’s unearthing in my memory, I think she gets caught by him and the brother chases down the killer guy while searching for her. I’m kinda remembering the brother hitting him with a chair across the back of the head or something

omg the terrible female boss is the same actress as Jongwoo’s girlfriend’s terrible boss in Strangers From Hell lol is she typecast?

ah these fucking weirdo creepy men die die die! once again, part of the horror is the workplace and its people

Tech: lights and the little toy playing cymbals whenever there’s lights sound around the house

it’s cool when all the lights are going off and on around the house and we can’t hear anything for so long as Kyung Mi tries to find what’s happening until we see the killer has turned on some sort of alarm so that the lights can’t properly track sound

she’s texting the man which is fine to call for backup but why not the cops? Edit: Is it cuz she can’t talk when she called 911? Is there no service where you don’t have to speak?

there’s some stupidity of the characters like any thriller/horror of course

oh these stupid stupid cops - literally forcibly bringing her to him with no proof that he actually is her sister or that he has authority over her or any concern that literally handing her to him like an object might not be the best idea even if he was her guardian/caretaker whatever considering she’s so against it. not to mention they both have blood on them

the part of him literally looming over her in this crowd and with the theat of death is insane. it’s in crowded public place and yet. reminds me of why I partly love the Strangers From Home restaurant scene - only Jongwoo and Moonjo really know what’s happening and what Moonjo’s capable of even though there are so many people around them who have a different idea of what’s going on

oh lol the memory wasn’t of the brother hitting the killer on the back of the head but the other way around. dumbassery, just catching up while with his back to the killer who’s supposed to be knocked out

I did remember this part quite clearly of her stabbing herself to make it seem like he did it, though I didn’t remember the cops actually shooting the killer to death oof

This was good but like most thriller/horror shows like this, suffered from character dumbassery or frustrations sometimes but generally was good. I liked it though, esp since the main character and her mom were deaf/HoH and they had access to some technology to help their day-to-day life but also showed the shortcomings of society, especially of the police force when it came to communicating. 

I liked the use of sound and how we also sometimes couldn’t hear things that the main character wouldn’t hear. I also enjoyed finding parallels between Strangers From Hell and Midnight.

Rating: 6.5/10 - still the same as before

i dont think ive ever seen aidan turner acting in something where he’s not bold. not brazen or cocky, where he’s actually nervous and stutters. so far as leonardo he’s mainly only relaxed with katerina (and that is an adorable friendship)! and his mannerisms are so different??? kind of hunched in on himself and nervous hands and his voice is completely different from ross poldark even though they’re both RP english accents. like damn i thought i’d stop being amazed at his acting, kudos, kudos everywhere!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR DRAG RACE HOT TAKES ⁉️

yay okay, some of these are well-crafted and some are random, here we go--

I said this on tiktok (back when I had a Drag Race tiktok) and got so much hate for it, but Drag Race has a huge problem with how it treats its Asian/East Asian queens. They put them in a box of "pretty with no personality" and then when it comes to acting challenges they encourage them to play up harmful stereotypes, reward them, then critique them for overusing the stereotypes (I'm thinking Plastique here). When an Asian queen doesn't fit that box, they get really uncomfortable and send her home (Rock M. Sakura👀, who also approved of my tiktok when I posted it lol). Kahmora is a better lipsyncer than some of the queens who made it incredibly far on season 13 because she's very emotive, but they played off her acting challenge as being bad because she "had no personality," but I think that's bullshit and once again typecasting her for their idea of an East Asian queen and I think that's really harmful. And I know, there were a few Asian queens on earlier seasons who saw some success (Raja, and Jiggly was a fan favorite, Kimchi obviously is amazing) -- I'm not taking away from their successes or popularity, and I haven't seen those seasons, but those middle seasons between 4 and like 8 had very little Asian representation to even talk about or counterbalance any of this.

I do not like Alaska. I don't think what she's doing is revolutionary, I find her annoying and I have found her annoying since I first watched season 5, I don't think her comedy is funny at all, and I don't like how she basically is RuPaul and her whole brand is very "Drag Race" (because I don't like Ru). She’s just not the queen for me (please don't hate me)

I think Ru hates Jan and Rosé and would probably hate Lagoona (she'd get the Perfect Edit too) because they do what she's been trying to do for 30 years better. They are better singers, better actors, better dancers. And yes, Ru is the best-known drag queen around the world, Covergirl and all that, but... we all know she's not good. I think she gets threatened by that kind of talent, especially when the queen with that talent has been making their way BEFORE Drag Race. Ru also likes to feel like the show is a launch pad even while continuously favoring well-connected queens.

I personally don't love when a queen doesn't know how to at least figure out how to cover her body nicely with fabric or style a wig passably. I miss the old days on Drag Race when pretty much all the queens walking into the workroom were from small local bars not making a bunch of money and when they were able to turn a look on a budget... that was the real magic (I'm sentimental for season 7 right now I guess, and honestly Miss Fame being rich and well-connected made her less personable... but that's every queen now).

Katya won the Cherry Bomb lip-sync in AS2. You won't change my mind.

I think that I was most excited about Gottmik when he was announced because it was at a time when I was simultaneously moving even more towards masculinity and butchness (and maybe trans-masculinity) while also exploring my new-found love of drag and makeup. It was really cool to see a trans man/masc AFAB person do makeup and still be masculine in ways. But beyond that feeling and that hype... I don't like him, and I don't like his young/influencer/hey gorge personality. I don't vibe with it.

Victoria Scone would have won UK3.

This might just be in my head but I feel like UK1 was overhyped, and UK2 being so good was the nail in the coffin.

something about the tablet scene still bugs me. i can't figure out what it is. there's a small semi essay below the cut of where im at with it, but feel free to chat with me in the notes. i could be looking at this through a really weird lens.

on one hand -- yeah thats definitely a 'dad what the fuck' kind of scene. it was used narratively to show daniel slipping/absorbing more of cobra kai/eagle fang's teachings and as a 'wow daniel's cool now' thing but it is messed up to do that to a kid's belongings. i want to establish that now, scaring a kid is never the right way to go about parenting.

but what also bugs me is that...well. some people have suggested that daniel should've just talked to anthony. that anthony's further actions were going to be colored by his dad's story of being bullied, which i could see. if anthony had been a different character. someone who's been shown to take what his parents to heart -- yeah that'd work.

but i genuinely don't think it would, because it is anthony larusso in canon. he doesn't respect his parents authority, and canonically never has. i doubt it would've changed much. he probably would've read it as "just another story dad tells" and gone back to the way he was already acting. to me? yeah, it probably would've. but, and this is what i'm 75% sure a lot of others are sort of forgetting, i'm (and you are probably not) also not someone who's terrorized a kid before. i'm not someone who's had free reign in her life before to the point that all of anthony's actions were possible. i'm someone who grew up and is still growing up with parents who would likely employ similar tactics like in the tablet scene.

(given that's on the assumption ck keeps his characterization consistent)

and...yeah??? i don't blame him. amanda and daniel have established themselves as "softer" (for lack of better wording) parents in their kids' lives. i wouldn't say absent, but we haven't had many examples of them holding a consequence/line with their kids before and actually following through with it. yeah, they took sam's phone in season one but she still went to that party in the canyon anyway and as far as i remember, there wasn't any reprimand there either. after the fight, they told her to stop practicing karate -- and she still did anyway without...any further notable repercussions. daniel's had multiple times with anthony (notably in ep 2 of season 1) trying to get him off the tablet where he just...gives up? says whatever and moves on. then we rarely see this kid other than when he insults johnny and is generally just typecasted as an annoying zoomer kid.

(i think what bugs me most is just the lack of effort on their parts. but. anthony's not a main character and his name isnt robby keene so.)

which, paragraphs to say -- i don't think daniel was completely wrong. i think he was terribly misguided. and that what he did is a slippery slope into authoritarian/abusive parenting if he continues that way. but for the purposes of that single, mostly stand-alone scene, there had to be genuine consequences. daniel was forced to be firm in the moment because anthony was pushing boundaries he'd established and hadnt respected. what he said afterwards, i don't fault him for. maybe its because ive heard it so many times, but like...yeah. he will be in for a world of pain if he doesn't change his ways. i mean, kenny beating him up in the final episode is probably one he won't ever forget, but i highly doubt any parent wants to see their kid suffer from real world consequences. even so, now instead of really heeding his parents warnings and potential lessons, he has to sit with the bruises and injuries of this fight and is forced to think about his actions.

tl;dr ughhh i'm not condoning daniel's actions. please. children are still very capable of change, but not in two seconds and with a chat over dinner. sometimes authoritative (not authoritarian. those are two very different things) parenting is something you need to do. and yeah...that might appear as what happened.

You know who was really cool in Bleach and doesn’t get a lot of love? Dordoni Alessandro Del Socaccio. He’s just got so much going on with his design that I absolutely love, but I think a lot of it is easy to miss in his fleeting appearance(s).

The most obvious is his devilish and classic villainous hair, taken from classic “el diablo” aesthetic, but is itself taken from various depictions of the character Mephistopheles.  But it plays right into Kubo’s Spanish language gimmick with the Arrancar.  His appearance as the start of the real Los Noches fight marathon for team Ichigo was also a real “Welcome to Hell” moment for upping the stakes on this new conflict.

His kind of laughably long name btw isn’t random, it’s a reference to classic American actors and their typecast role of The Latin Lover that was prevalent in the 1930s-40s.  It was basically the film adaptation of the literary “tall dark and handsome” trope, epitomized in Spanish, Mexican, and sometimes Italian foreigners; smoldering, passionate macho seducers.

It wasn’t actually meant to be a particularly harmful character type originally, but taking the creative reigns on “male lover” character writing away from the women pining for him, and putting it into the hands of men who were prone to being existentially threatened by him, resulted in them being morphed into predictably moralizing cautionary tales against white american women fucking darkskinned foreigners… because that’s just what this shit always turns into…  

Anyway…  Point being is that some of the big names in this type were men like Rudolph Valentino, Ramon Novarro, and Gilbert Roland, all of which were working names for the silver screen.  Their actual names were, Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filiberto Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguella,  José Ramón Gil Samaniego, and  Luis Antonio Dámaso de Alonso, respectively.

Then there’s his flamboyant posing, his high collar, chest pulling at the “buttons” of his uniform, tasseled sleeves, long hip sash (i don’t know why Kubo chose the weird fluffy looking fabric for it tho…) and his metal plated shoes(some sort of combat tap shoes) all of which pull from Flamenco dancing.  Although the posing isn’t used very accurately the broad sweeping arm motions and the fingers together hand gesture make the reference pretty clear.

Then there’s his Resurreccion, which I’ve talked about before, but it bears repeating…  The name Giralda is the Spanish word for “weathercock” a weathervane obviously shaped like a rooster.  It’s why his release cry is “whirl” and his Resurreccion is bunch of whirling tornadoes with bird beaks, and the spinning motion is also a reference to the Flamenco dancing again.  But there’s more!  The rooster theme is also spun into a reference to cockfighting, which is frankly kind of a broad reaching practice but has some notable history in Spain, by proxy Mexico via colonialism, and Thailand.

I mention Thailand because Dordoni’s kick-based fighting style seems to have some strong kickboxing and/or muay thai influence behind it.  The cockfight theme generally falls back on kicking because, obviously, roosters fight largely with their talons, often equipped in cockfights with razors to expedite fights. (Pokemon knows what im talking about)  But the muay thai fighting style is also known for its use of elbows and knees, and that lines up with the Flamenco high knee poses already in use for Dordoni.  It’s a super fun mix of aesthetics, and a really fun way to turn Dordoni into a dance fighter.

And then just as a tiny little cherry on top, when Ichigo kind of earns the respect of Dordoni and Dordoni tells Ichigo to leave while he handles the Exequias, we get a little Spanish bullfighter tossed in there!

He’s really just got such a cool character design going for him, and Kubo clearly put a lot of careful thought and bits of research into it.  It’s more than he seems to put into a lot of side characters, so it’s kind of a shame that I don’t think that effort gets particularly recognized, and he’s not exactly a fan favorite.  He feels to me almost like Quilge does to the Sternritter, where if someone had to be THE poster child for their faction, it’d be them.

"I can literally see you pacing," Sofia spoke from inside the office and Chris took it as an invitation. "I'm sure your mother teach you to knock," She said without not overlooking from the computer screen. 

"Sof, come on," Chris said closing the door behind him and sat down on the chair in front of her. "laid it on me, I deserve it."

"I have nothing to tell you."

"Yes, you do."

Sofia looked up at him with the most venomous look he had ever see on her eyes. "What do you want me to tell you?, I'm not going to berate you. I've done the yelling things for two years, I'm done with that. You wanna keep fucking your ex–

" I don't, " He interrupted her.

" Cool, but don't drag me in the middle."

"I'm not dragging you into anything, I already told you I don't wanna be just friends. Fuck, I want you." Chris said leaning on the desk. 

"And that again," She shakes her head. "I'm mad at you right now and you drop that, what are you expecting?, that I'll be excited to date you now. You make out with your ex-girlfriend in front of me and then asked me to be with you." She put the computer aside. "Then I meet this guy, and I wanted to make up with him but he started typecasting as young Salma Hayek, which I don't even look like her. I turned him down and he asked me if I was an escort, I mean, what the fuck?" 

"Oh my God," Chris rubbed his face and looked at her again. "Fuck. I'm sorry, Sof. I swear I didn't know—fuck."

"Yeah, all that while you were sucking face, baby. I didn't fuck him up because I respect you. So yeah, you're a fucking asshole." She said sighing deeply. "I know, we are friends and not at all exclusive, you can do whatever you want but at least let me fucking know first and I'll be cool with it."

"Yes, you're absolutely right," 

"I know," 

"I'm sorry, I never wanted to make you feel like that. I'm an asshole,"

"Yes, you're." She looked at him, feeling a little more at ease because for some reason she was waiting for the ball to drop, for Chris to tell her something else, for him not to admit he fucked up. "Thanks for somehow don't turn this around and blame me for it." 

"Fuckig Tiffany," He said standing up and walked up to her and Sofia closed her computer and looked at him. 

"I can accept food as an apology,"

"Whatever you want, my threat." 

"Yeah, and carry my bag," She said trying to hide her smile as she put her things on her bag and handed it to him.

 "Gladly," Chris smile as she leads the way.

They drive around a little bit at Sofia's request as she tried to wrap her head on what Chris had asked her before, they always talked a lot, about a range of things and both of them were almost on the same page respecting their views, political or religious and their struggle with it, but they never really talked relationship, she never asked and Chris asked a little about hers. 

"Do you ever feel panic over a relationship?" She asked. 

"Yeah, sometimes… when I meet someone that I really like, then we date sometimes gets complicated or we don't meet certain expectations. It gets me anxious sometimes I panic a bit." Chris explained as she nods. 

"Like, you feel trapped if not workout like you expect?"

"Sometimes," He explained drinking his coffee and then took a turn, slowly heading to his house. "Most of the woman I date, they just wanna… Please me," Chris groaned. "Or they just wanna do whatever I want to do… Fuck, I'm too picky?" He asked laughing almost bitterly as Sofía snorted. 

“Yes, but shit—I'll be picky too.” She shrugged and shifted on the seat to look at him better. “Do you ask that, out of panic? That you wanna be with me.”

Chris turned his head and looked straight to her eyes, he wanted to know where that came from—does she want him? the same way he wants her?. 

“I… I don't know if it was panic—I know I want to be with you,” Chris replied, and Sofia sigh. 

“But why? you're telling me that sometimes you feel trapped with girls and stuff.” She asked putting down her coffee into to cup holder. “And still you want to progress things with me?”

“You don't make me feel like that.” Chris quickly said and Sofia rolled her eyes. 

“And pretty sure all of your exes didn't make you feel like that when you progress things.” She spat sarcastically. Chris snort and rubbed his beard, frustrated at her opposition. 

“It's different—”

“In what way?” She quickly asked and Chris smiled at her eagerness. 

“We are friends, not just casual friends. All my possible free time in Boston I'd rather spend it with you than with anyone else and that was before I even began—” He explained and quickly stopped when he was about to overshare his feelings that he wasn't sure about it either. “You know, thinking about you in some other way.”

“Come on,” She laughed and punch him in the arm. “I know you wanted to fuck me since you saw me in that bar.” She lightens the mood for a bit. 

“Of course, you're so fucking hot,” He got distracted for a moment. “But it's not just fucking you anymore, I love that—I do. I just want more,”

“To date me?”

“Yes!” He almost shouted and Sofia looked forward, silent for a moment. 

“I don't want this to end, us—” She pointed between then and Chris agreed. 

“Neither do I.”

“Dating put this at risk. What if we broke up? and we don't get to see each other again?”

“Why would be broke out?” 

“I don't know, maybe you kissing one of your four hundred exes.” She sasses him and Chris pursed his lips together thinking that he fucked up but had something to say to her too. 

"Are you jealous?" 

"Excuse me?" 

"Because you said that you were going to make out with that idiot at the party, so you were trying to make me jealous." He pointed out and Sofia stares at him. 

"It would have work?" She puckers her lips at him and Chris stare at her. "and you can't say nothing," Sofia mock him and Chris looked straight ahead at the road. “I kinda got jealous too and—” Sofía shifted in the seat, willing to admit that she wanted to kiss that dude out of spite. shit no, I'm fucking crazy. “that's why I left, you went with me—I'm not saying we should be making out  everywhere we go but.”

“I went with you and we've got something going on.”

“Right.”

“I get it and I know you enough that you do things out of spite—” They both laughed and she rolled her eyes. “I deserved it.”

“Nah,” She shakes her head playing with the end of her shirt. “I don't know how to—.” They both stayed silent for a long moment, Chris had parked the car on a nearby street. "I don't know how to do this right, I don't wanna hurt you and I don't wanna get hurt. I appreciate your friendship so much, man…" She sighed deeply. 

“You wanna end this? I mean… go back.” Chris asked and Sofia looked at him.

“Do you want that?” Sofía asked. 

“No, definitely not.” Chris quickly answers and she nods, thinking the same thing. 

"Okay, what about we keep doing this—but as friends, no strings, no pressure. Just let it flow and see where it goes?" Sofia propose, mostly trying to stir Chris's ideas of relationships because the only thing that she was sure was that she wanted Chris on her life. 

He didn't seem satisfied but at least she was compromising on something. He can work with that… for the moment. 

'Alright, yes. I'd like that.'
