Magnus in the middle of the date, so you know that vampire who’s home you broke into while murdering his friends, yeah that one, well funny story... honestly I’m imagining it kind of cracky but it has the potential to be really angsty as well. Feel no pressure to respond if you’re busy but I just really love Magnus and Raphael and you’re one of the few blogs I know that doesn’t characterise them in a bunch of barely concealed racist stereotypes

im never too busy for magnus and raphael asks 👀👀👀 i might take a while to respond (usually with asks i like a lot djdndjdn) but i always love getting asks and answering them, so dont worry about that. especially magnus & raphael asks!!!!!!! they are everything i want out of life

also im happy to hear u like my characterisation of them but yeah this fandom is hell. and trying to think about ppl who post about them frequently and that i trust i was like "bruh there's so little" but anygays @luxxmagnus @maiaisbia (aurora_chiroptera on ao3) @some-thrilling-heroics (yellow_craion on ao3. to be fair she's been more into the old guard lately but still worth a follow) are all mag&raph enthusiasts with good content. @magnusraphaelmaia is basically a reblog blog but it has good shit as well. and those are the ones that come to mind daisndaidas if yall have any other recs im all for it

as for the actual question! oof. idk. id usually say that it’s probably on his clave file, but that’s actually implied to not be true (which makes sense since it was kind of risky for raphael to be camille’s second-in-command if she knew that she was magnus’ son and how much she could use them against each other and just generally not trust raphael, which kind of fucked up his ‘overthrowing her’ plans), since izzy didn’t know about their relationship and neither did simon, or anyone else that i can think of. (and like simon is nosy and literally lived with the vampires so it doesn’t make any sense for him to be like “what is raphael doing here??” when he got into magnus’ house unless it was some kind of secret). and alec also didn’t understand why magnus defended raphael with the whole yin fen thing which also points in that direction

i mean to be fair it could be just that he was overtaken with Rage and Big Brother Instincts, but i do actually think it hadn’t come up before. so probably after that? i actually don’t remember whether or not magnus and alec talked about that whole thing or if it was just swept under the rug as usual, i have a vague feeling that it was mentioned, but i might be wrong. either way i would have loved to see them talking about it. it would probably come in the form of a dramatic revelation like “izzy is my family!” “and raphael is mine”. or maybe magnus got into how raphael would never use izzy or lure her into addiction because he’s also struggled with that (you know a random moment of ooc bull nobody ever talks about? magnus buying the idea that the yin fen thing was on raphael without a second thought. he was all but angry with raphael and that pisses me the FUCK off, because even if it was raphael’s fault - and it wasn’t - he still would?? trust his son enough to ask him about it??? but FUCK logic in this house) and he’s been clean for decades

and alec listens to it all with that frown of his that he has when he’s trying to figure something out, and then, when magnus is done, alec is all like “how do you know all this?” and magnus sighs and is like “because i was the one who rescued him. i watched it all, alexander. i know raphael would never do that to someone. even when he was at his lowest, he never wanted to hurt anybody”

and alec has that moment of “ah shit i just punched my possible future son-in-law hmmm that’s a problem” and like, look, izzy has many many faults, especially in her relationship with raphael and all the SHIT she did to him, but villainizing him is not one of them. literally the second she had just been caught and was high af and probably knew she would be into some kind of trouble she yelled “alec, it was not his fault!” so i think she would tell him what happened. maybe wouldn’t straight up admit she was the one who got him hooked, but definitely tell him that raphael had nothing to do with this and if anything he ended up in the story because he tried to protect her. which is something he did out of pure selflessness since they were like, literally enemies up to that point

anyway i’m going too deep into my yin fen rant but LOOK I HATE HOW THAT PLOTLINE WAS HANDLED I HATE IT. FUCK VILLAINIZING RAPHAEL FOR THE YIN FEN 20FOREVER. but my POINT is, after that, alec apologizes to raphael eventually, and magnus heals raphael’s wounds, and they both focus on taking care of their respective families as they are BOTH struggling with addiction god fucking damn it they literally ignored raphael trying to come clean! for the second time! fuck this! anyway the point is that at least raphael has gone through this before so he knows it’s possible to pull through, but also, he’s gone through this before so it’s fucking humiliating to go through it again and he needs emotional support, okay?

and alec probably tries to awkwardly help magnus take care of raphael in a very earnest but “hm” way because this whole thing is a mess lmao. and slowly they start to mend that? and alec makes sure magnus knows that this would never be a drawback to him because if anything he loves how caring and generous magnus is? yeah. and i guess that’s my take on how that would come up diahduisa

hopping off that last ask a little bit just to do a slightly less cracky take: meliorn

so meliorn can speak any language because ✨magic✨ and of course it's a little tricky because again, language isn't an exact science, much less translation, but in short it's like they can automatically have equivalents of a word in their head and reply accordingly. so nuances of the language are lost - which is why they sometimes sound weird or too posh - but communication is very easy

and then of course over time they learn more about the nuances and words that are associated with certain contexts and you know, the whole thing about languages. particularly english in this case as it's the one they use the most but i also like to think that they try to learn spanish and yiddish, like, for real? because they always hear their partners speaking spanish and they know it would mean a lot to simon if they learnt yiddish For Real as so many people look down on the language. especially because raphael and maia are already trying to learn it, so, you know, meliorn can join in

and just like... they aren't pretending to not know the languages but they want to actually learn them from the start, their structure and stuff, not just the words, you know? because learning languages is always so fascinating and shows so much about the culture(s) that language belongs to, and it's really so interesting and enriching and meliorn is in love with the cultural diversity of non-seelies

so it's just soft hours with izzy, raphael, and simon all trying to explain the same concept to him, except they have very different approaches and it soon becomes a mess of arguing that leaves them more confused than they started rudbdjdndi in the end it's usually maia who pulls them to the side while the others are in passionate debate to explain it to them in simpler terms and meliorn is like "oh! i understand now. thank you, bella" and maia has that cute soft smile. it's also funny cuz maia is the least fluent out of them all but it is what it is

and EXTRA soft hours with simon teaching the 3 of them yiddish. it's a little infuriating cuz due to magic meliorn doesn't need to be taught the alphabet, while raphael and maia struggle with that for a bit, since they haven't learnt an alphabet since they were small kids lmao. and meliorn already basically speaks intermediate-level yiddish because ✨magic✨ so it's a bit frustrating, esp cuz rapha definitely has a little bit of a competitive side

but just hhhhhhh meliorn being fascinated by the intricacies of language even if they don't need to learn them, maybe with a pencil behind their ears as they take notes about the subjects and smile softly at each new thing they figure out..... aa

I'm not as interested in Izzy as a character than I am with Magnus or Alec, but I do like her! She's badass, she's smart, she's generally a very strong female character, which I like. (Maybe she's a bit too stereotypically "badass feminine character", but that's the creator's fault, not hers.) She's a bit dismissive of Alec at the beginning of the show (like Jace and Clary), but she's very supportive elsewhere, so I like her overall.

Izzy is like the prettiest person ever... I like how Magnus & Alec look, but Izzy is absolutely gorgeous <3 she is excluded from the top category only because there is literally nobody who I want to bang skdjfsdksjdfhdksjh

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

This one's difficult... Honestly, she's very much all of them except hufflepuff. She's gryffindor in that she's brave & self-sacrificing (obviously; literally all characters are), slytherin because she's sneaky and a bit ambitious and definitely has a slytherin aesthetic w/ her whip, ravenclaw since she's a brilliant forensic pathologist. I think I will put her in slytherin, though, since basically all book characters can fit into the gryffindor slot so she's not unusual in that way, and honestly most of her ravenclaw characteristics can also be applied to slytherin.

best quality: this is surprisingly difficult... she's just a fun character? idk if that counts, but it's hard to pin down exactly what I like about her

worst quality: She's too pushy.

honestly it's kinda hard to explain what I mean here, and I feel like it might be based off of fanon rather than canon, but Izzy can be too insistent? She sometimes doesn't know when to back off.

(There's also the whole badass-female-stereotype thing that I mentioned earlier, but again, that's not Izzy's fault skdjfhsdhjkf)

tbh I'd also be totally fine shipping her with nobody at all, but if I have to pick one person, it'd be Simon. Their dynamic is just ADORABLE (tbh any ship involving Simon is adorable), I love the "nerd hot" x more traditionally hot thing.

brotp them with: Clary, Alec

in the interests of consistency, I have again given two brotps

Clary: I gotta say I LOVED having Clary & Izzy become parabatai in the show. I'm also a huge fan of Clary & Simon as parabatai in the books, but Clary & Izzy is also just really interesting...

Alec: THE. BEST. SIBLING. RELATIONSHIP. EVER. need I say more? (no, I needn't, but I shall in any case) They're just a really good sibling pair, and they're super fun to write as siblings. Their dynamic is top-tier. They understand each other, they care for each other, it's just really good <3

needs to stay away from: Raphael

okay so this might be a bit of an uncommon opinion, idk, but I feel like their relationship in the show was very toxic and I strongly do not ship Izzy & Raphael... like I don't think they need to be enemies or anything but I feel like they're not really healthy together. So a bit of closure is fine, but I don't like them together. (not anything against Raphael btw)

Clary

okay this looks worse than it is. tbh I'm just kinda neutral towards Clary? like it really depends on the context — she can be written really well in some fics, or in a way that makes me really dislike her. I'm kinda torn on the canon front since the books are from her POV, making it hard to dislike her, but I really don't like her in the show... She definitely has some interesting points, but overall her character has some major flaws as well.

she's... fine, I guess? sometimes she looks really pretty but other times it's kinda meh for me

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

I feel like this is kinda obvious... as I said with Jace, most MCs are gryffindors; Clary's just living up to that. She's hot-headed, stubborn, brave, fiery, the absolute epitome of a gryffindor.

best quality: her determination to do what is right

admittedly this has not had entirely good consequences, but she's got a very strong moral compass (if occasionally a nice set of blinders, too). If she realises that something is the right thing to do, she'll do it.

worst quality: her hot-headedness

Clary's worst problem imo is that she doesn't think. She just goes diving right ahead into things without pausing to go over the possible consequences, etc. She's definitely getting better at that as the series goes on, but it's something to work on.

ship them with: Jace

I do appreciate the occasional clizzy/claia fic, but I don't really ship either of those strongly? And she and Jace can be absolutely adorable together, so.

brotp them with: Alec

I LOVE CLARY & ALEC OKAY

they are the perfect foils for each other — impulsive vs. overthinker, emotion-driven vs. emotion-suppressing/logic-driven, short-range daggers vs. long-range bow, short vs. tall... I love their dynamic

needs to stay away from: uhhhh honestly Clary is fine, she doesn't really need to stay away from anybody...

misc. thoughts: tbh I like her more at the end of this than I did at the beginning. she's interesting, she definitely has some good points, she's got a really good redemption arc.

I will never stop thinking all of potential and great storylines that SH-season 4 would’ve had. Clary fighting to find a way to forgive herself and come back from the darkness with the help of Jace. Izzy and Clary arranging their parabatai-ceremony. Maia meeting her parents after so many years and becoming closer with Bat. More of Sizzy-slowburn. Raphael getting used to human life and starting his studies for being the priest. Heline. <3 Luke and Clary getting more father-daughter-scenes together. Luke finally being happy with Maryse. Perhaps even the plot of Jonathan and Seelie Queen’s child. Catarina and Madzie spending time with Alec, Catarina telling stories about the history between her and Magnus to help him cope. Clary and Alec’s BROTP growing stronger when they try to find the ways to get to Edom to save Magnus. Magnus struggling with accepting his new position, taking his father’s throne (= the very thing that had been his worst nightmare) and trying to fight the darkness inside of him and stop himself from reversing back to his closed-off self. More Magnus-flashbacks in general. The gang finally arriving to Edom. Alec getting his first taste of warlock powers and actually understanding why magic is so important to Magnus. Alec, Clary and others trying to remind Magnus that the darkness inside him isn’t who he is. Magnus feeling hopelessness of getting out and guilty of endangering everyone and wanting them to go and focus on their lives. Alec saying his iconic line of not wanting the world, only Magnus. (I actually have the fanfic of the scene where they finally meet Magnus in Edom in my mind, but I’m not sure if I will publish it or when it would happen.) The longer version of the wedding.

Have I already told how much I resent Freeform? Yes, I have. And I will probably say it many times over. So. much. wasted. potential.

I know it would not happen at all because of canon, but I just adore the idea of a Raphael + Alec friendship? like, 2 BAMF who can be really closed off to others who are united by their adoration of Magnus Bane? also as an autistic I cling to autistic headcanons (autistic Alec is my fav thing and autistic Raphael is so valid). I just love the idea of the two of them grudgingly getting along, bonding over their love for Magnus, slowly realizing they have a lot in common and becoming close friends

doaijdsoaijdaoij i mean honestly i feel you? i’ll confess that i don’t talk a lot about raphael & alec more because like... i really love the relationship between raphael and magnus tbh doasaoj and fandom has a tendency to make everything about alec so i tend to hesitate before talking about them. but also like, magnus deserves for his husband and his son to be friends, you know? dahdsioah like it sucks that they’re not and there’s all this tension/bad blood there, and magnus doesn’t want it at all. and neither of them want to make magnus have to “choose” or feel weird or skirt around the subject, either. so like, i think they’d try?

and while of course canon was all sorts of fucked up and did raphael dirty as always i also don’t think that what happened between them was like... unfixable. especially because it wasn’t raphael’s fault ffs it was literally izzy’s like she triggered his addiction she was using him for the love of fuck. alec was mad because he was in protective sibling mode but i think that now that izzy is alright, if she told him what happened, he would listen to reason, you know? and while izzy did all sorts of fucked up shit to raphael, i don’t think that she would pretend that he was the villain in that story tbh. i mean she already didn’t at the time and she was kinda “in trouble” so you know

and raphael is... way too forgiving when ppl hurt him methinks lmao see how he literally didn’t blame izzy even after she helped simon (whom he not only also forgave but referred to as a great man in the finale) use his sister against him. like okay they wouldn’t actually hurt her, but... still. raphael has a tendency to hold grudges and be very calculating and unforgiving if you hurt his family or his people, but not extend the same protectiveness towards himself. which is bad and lots to unpack there and i hope he goes to therapy and relearns how to be mad about the things that were done to him and see himself as more than just someone to help his loved ones haha like father like son but it is what it is. so like... i think he’d forgive alec for that punch tbh djadjasda especially because again, he would be doing it for magnus’ sake. and there’s very little he wouldn’t do for magnus

also well he was at their wedding and that wasn’t a problem so like

my point is, i think it isn’t impossible that they would become friends, especially because they have good reason to (magnus) and also infinite time because they are all immortals as we know and we stan that uwu so... yeah

i can’t see them becoming super duper close, especially because i think that alec is just.... Too Gringo. not in a gross way, but in the way that makes raphael want to roll his eyes so hard he will be transported into a new dimension. he eats institute food and likes it. raphael loves magnus and all, but there are limits

and alec is also very Shadowhunter, in the way that he can be way too goal-oriented and think like a soldier sometimes, and while raphael, as a fellow autistic, understands the need for structure, he also gets a little annoyed at the way alec’s mind works sometimes. like they have different languages in that sense, you know? so like. it’s not a huge deal it’s not like raphael hates him but also sometimes he just wants to turn to his partners and be like “yall see this shit?” whenever alec speaks lmao

but also they can make a very great team working together, because they’re both cool headed and again, like structure, and they’re very calculating. like raphael spent decades waiting to overthrow camille and alec similarly can plan long term easily. and they are also fiercely loyal to those they love, and have that particular way of being... passionately protective about them. raphael is more cool headed than alec i think, especially when it comes to magnus lmao not because he loves him less but because he does cling to have a clear plan in mind when he needs to help others out, while alec has “i gotta make it better right now” instincts that lead to........... not brilliant decisions. but still, my point is, they could work very well together, even if raphael has to be like “ok im gonna need you to sit down and chill” sometimes

(picturing dramatic scenes where like magnus is hurt and alec stalks towards the door and raphael just runs and blocks it and they have a screaming match but raphael is just like “what are you gonna do? go out there and do exactly what the enemy wants? put magnus at further risk? i’m not gonna let you risk hurting magnus because you couldn’t sit down and think for a few seconds” and alec sets his jaw and slowly sits down, angry but knowing he’s right)

so i think they would have more the type of friendship where they aren’t like... together frequently, like, they only see each other once every few months, and when they do, it’s good, but more than that they butt heads too much. or if it’s an immortal squad gathering then alec is frequently there as well, but usually he talks more to cat than rapha. so like, it works? and so when they see each other or need to work together or something it can be pretty good

i also like cracky ideas like alec trying to gain raphael’s respect by proving to him that he can eat spicy food (he can’t, but boy will he power through it), and generally raphael and alec lowkey pranking each other dajdsaa

and i definitely LOVE alec asking raphael for help so he can surprise magnus by cooking a nice meal for him :) and raphael gives him a full course that lasts weeks because he wants the best for magnus and i actually have many thoughts about this and think this might be the moment where they switch from “lowkey awkward acquaintances with a common love for magnus” to “actually friends, even if in a teasing way”. but this ask is already too long so i’ll just. see myself out but also ask me about it tbh

OTP: I adore the Claiabella OT3, because I feel like they balance each other out very well. Clary and Maia are both nerdy, they can introduce Izzy to mundane TV and video games! :D Gosh The World Inverted Claiabella would be the cutest thing! I am also a sucker for the rare pair Maiaphael, because I think Maia and Raphael both have such a strong dedication to the downworld and such a deep caring that they would match well. (also werewolf/vampire romance is the CUTEST). Speaking of, I also love Simon and Maia...

BrOTP: Magnus and Maia, I would love to have seen them interact more. Maia and Luke as well, though he is more her dad figure.

NOTP: Jace/Maia, I just don’t think they make sense. GOD but even worse is her and Jordan. I am not a fan of how the show handled that at all. As I said with Magnus, we don’t ship people with their abusers!

Favorite thing about them: Her determination. She is so dedicated to everything she does, be it protecting her pack, learning marine biology, or taking care of her friends. She is so passionate and caring, I adore her!

Least favorite thing about them: That the writers had her kinda forgive Jordan. I would have liked to see her get better closure with all of that.

♛: my brotp

My first impulse was to say the Lightwood trio - but does it count if I ship two of the three together? Same with Clary and Izzy - I adore their canon friendship, but I can easily ship them. If we go totally platonic, I probably like Alec and Lydia best - I will forever be salty that we didn’t get more of Lydia! In my head, she was promoted and is now working with Alec to completely reinvent the Clave.

☀: a supporting/background character

After the end of the show, Raphael becomes a Franciscan monk and pays penance for his torture of Heidi through good deeds and prayer. He mostly works with homeless youth, especially lgbtq ones. (I’m not a fan of the Catholic church as an institution, but it’s what Raphael knows and believes in, so I think it would be fitting for him to choose this path to redemption.)

✎: something that should've happened

Aside from Jalec being canon? *g* The show should have had actual follow-through for all the horrible things that happened to the characters and that were barely addressed, starting from Jocelyn’s death, Simon cutting himself off from his family, all the way to Jace’s trauma. Because seriously, it was ridiculously obvious that they only cared about realistic character development when it fit into the plot. Oh, and to reiterate another pet peeve of mine: the timeline in general should have been WAAAAY slowed down. I mean, the entire fucking show happens in the span of a few months, which is too stupid for words.

♞: my fancasting for a character

Not having read the books I don’t really know about characters who didn’t make the show, and I’m having trouble recasting anyone, I’ve seen the actors too many times. Oh wait, Tessa Gray’s still alive, right? And the show already gave us a Jem who’s only half a Silent Brother, so how about seeing them reunite, with Tessa being portrayed by Tessa Thompson! :)
