Let's talk about the small gestures of Jade towards Kit. How she holds Kit gently and guiding her to where Kit should rest. There is also one scene from the shattered sea where she gave Kit a glass of water.

Y'all I just fucking realized- Kit is THE FIRST canonically queer Disney princess. The first. Ever. This is an OCCASION, people. Also, the fact that Kit and Jade are just outright queer- it's not just hinted at like the supposed representation in other Disney productions- that's amazing. It's so accepted, too. It's not addressed as an obstacle or anything, it's just an undeniable part of their characters. I haven't watched the documentary or anything yet on the making, but I read a little about how Ruby Cruz and Erin Kellyman reacted to that as two similarly queer actors playing queer characters, and it's just so amazing to FINALLY be given great representation from great people in a place you wouldn't expect it from. It is so important for queer kids today to be able to recognize themselves in the characters shown in media for a plethora of reasons, and this is a MAJOR step in the direction. Also, the fact that the two are both butch? I love that? It's glorious, I love them all.
I know that given past circumstances I really shouldn't get my hopes up about it being renewed, just given how many queer shows I've loved that have been cancelled, especially since it's Disney. (Same damn company that did it to the owl house), but I'm really hopeful that we'll be able to get more of this, and even if the worst happens, this isn't something they can take away from us. We have a Lesbian princess with short hair who dresses masc, and we have a lesbian knight who also dresses similarly. This is such a huge step in the way of inclusivity in such an amazing form of media. I am screeching with delight as I write this, and now my cat thinks I'm deranged, but it is so fucking worth it. (I will however break something if it doesn't get renewed, and possibly commit a crime or two).

Personally, as someone who grew up watching the movie, I find it odd that people assume that in the world of Willow, knights don't accept women. This world seems to really value women.
Example 1: Sorsha was a knight.
Example 2: The two most powerful wizards in the movie were old women.
Example 3: Nothing is expected of Airk even though he's (slightly) older and male, but Kit is to be ruler.
Example 4: Graydon is marrying into the Tir Asleen royal family and expected to produce heirs. Kit was not going to marry into Galladoorn and produce heirs.
Example 5: Elora is prophecized to be Empress (etc, etc) and expected to rule everyone.
I really think that in this world, society is largely matriarchal. I don't think Jade would not be allowed to become a knight on the basis of being female, especially considering the line that is actually said. Jade tells Kit she's been accepted to go off and train as a knight, and this is the exact dialogue:
Kit: But they don't take-
Jade: They've made an exception.
Which begs the question: what do the knights traditionally not accept? I wonder if it's a classism issue, considering that Jade was raised as an orphan working in the stables before Ballantine saw her potential. But that's just my theory.

One of my favorite details of Willow (2022) is when Kit decides she's going to throw that knife in the middle of a crowded ball, only Airk and Jade don't flinch away. Every other partygoer who is remotely nearby (in the shot) moves away from Airk. Both Jade and Airk trust Kit enough that they don't move at all.

I’ve been wanting to write this for far too long never really knowing how. Anyway. I grew up watching Willow every time it was on TV and being a huge addict of fantasy movies. Growing up I fell in love with Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia. And as I grew older, the closet I found myself in grew tighter and tighter - but I thought, then, that there wasn’t a scape. My sister and I went through some rough patches in our lives, and our love of fantasy stories kept us strong and very much alive. But the thing is… I wasn’t in those stories. The main characters are straight. The guy falls in love with the girl. End of story. So I would imagine myself inserted in those worlds and I’d be powerful and there would be a girl there for me. Fast forward to 31 yo happily and gayly married me, and I see something about a Willow series and I tell my wife “hey, the movie was really cool! Let’s watch the series” and she’s “yeah, of course”. Then there’s the sparring scene where Jade gives Kit THE LOOK, and we’re both “ooooh gay 👀” but then Kit’s engaged and we’re thinking “oh, false alarm”. And then… The kiss. In the very first episode. Of a Disney series. Of course I got strongly obsessed and followed up the next episodes. And then episode 5 happened. And there they were. Me. In a fantasy show. Saying loudly and proudly what they felt. How they felt. I bursted into tears, years of longing and imagining and wishing. And I was the main character on a Disney show. The support they got from straight characters, the banter, the understanding, the lack of shame… And then the two queer characters take this huge role in protecting Elora, THE most important character. And I’m saved. I am proud. I am healed. And I’m in love with their love and with their story and I wish they could know how I feel, how I imagine so many of us feel. I don’t know what will happen next, whether they’ll renew it or not. But I shall be forever grateful that this show exists.

I think tanthamore is the only ship where I genuinely kin both parts of the relationship. Both of them have serious issues with love and trust, and I just-
✨️ Kit's abandonment issues
✨️ Jade's fear of disappointing others (imo)
✨️ Kit's inability to believe others will stick around
✨️ Jade's struggle with leaving behind the people she loves for her dreams
✨️ Kit being a little shit and lashing out at the people she loves: imo because she doesn't have the emotional safety to truly lash out at anyone else- though she does sometimes cause a scene, she never does so while showing her actual emotions and hurt-, so she throws a fit (while still not actually talking about the emotional issue!!) around the only people she knows will stay (Jade, Airk, eventually Elora) inadvertently harming them and pushing them away.
✨️ Jade refusing to open up her pains and actually vent to others because she feels like she has to be the put together and responsible one, the shoulder to cry on and the one to protect. Again, inadvertently pushing people away.
✨️Both Kit and Jade not trusting the people around them but attaching themselves to Boorman like a father figure because even with their issues they care for others
I am both of these people and it both scares me and is invigorating to see. This show may not heal trauma, but it addresses human struggles, and shows support, and love, and damn if it doesn't hurt and help to see.
