“Poor Helaena…to lose a child like that”
“Poor Aegon…a father’s rage is justified”
Not hearing a whole lot of poor Rhaenyra who lost her father, her son, her throne and her unborn daughter in a short span of time.
According to TG stans, a child’s death is absolutely horrible (unless it’s Rhaenyra’s. If it’s Rhaenyra’s child, it’s fun, let’s celebrate).
I fail to see why Helaena’s grief is more important than Rhaenyra’s. She lost one son, said “bye bye world” and shut down (and I don’t see anyone pointing fingers at her and calling her useless in this war even though she was. She had a dragon she could use, but chose to remain locked up in her room and in depression).
Rhaenyra lost a whole lot more, and she had to stay on her feet and fight to take back what rightfully belongs to her.
Why is Jaehaerys’ death more tragic than Lucerys’?
Lucerys was murdered in cold blood, just like that boy of Helaena’s who’s barely relevant throughout the whole story.
Lucerys was a boy too.
Now there’s the question of who shed first blood.
The Greens did.
Actions call for reactions, and this is war.
Daemon wanted Aegon the Usurper to lose a son, just like the Greens forced Rhaenyra to suffer the loss of one of her own. He called for retribution. A life for a life. He could have arranged to have everyone in that tower killed that night. He could have demanded Aegon’s daughter, Jaehaera, be killed in exchange for the life of the daughter the Greens made him lose (Visenya). But he didn’t.
I’ve seen comments cheering on Aegon for wanting vengeance for his dead son, but apparently Rhaenyra is not allowed to demand retribution for the death of hers.
Misogyny runs high in the 21st century, doesn’t it? A woman who is not perfect is a monster, and a man with vices is just “misunderstood”.
And then you all have the nerve to point fingers at people who don’t care about the consequences of B&C. No, I don’t care that Aegon’s child is going to be murdered. Because I didn’t see that sympathy from stans when Lucerys was murdered. All I saw were jokes made at a child ripped apart by the biggest and most dangerous dragon alive because her rider is a twisted one-eyed psychopath.
The Blacks are entitled to vengeance.
Lucerys’ death is on Aemond’s head. And so is Jaehaerys’. He’s 100% responsible. If anyone is to blame for B&C, it’s Aemond the Kinslayer.

There is something special for me about the reactions of parents to the death of their firstborn. the way they get mad and thirsty for blood.
After Aegon was poisoned, Alicent lost touch with reality and tried to persuade her little granddaughter to kill the new king.
Aegon, after Jaehaerys was brutally murdered, becomes a furious mess, trying to numb the pain with the wine and blood of all the mousers of the town.
Alicent attempted to kill the new king with her own hands, snatching daggers from the guards. Aegon stood at the head of the army and, despite severe injuries, personally destroyed the main culprit of all the troubles.
like mother like son.

Parallels Between Daemon and Aemond (narrative foils).
1. Both believe they would make better kings, even dismissing the existence of their brothers' heirs ahead of them in the line of succession e.g Daemon with baby Baelon, Aemond with Jaehaerys.
Episode 1 Daemon: "Until your mother (Aemma) brings forth a son, you are cursed with me."
Tumblr media
Episode 9 Aemond: "I'm next in line to the throne. Should they come looking for me, I intend to be found."
Tumblr media
2. Both men, however, are loyal, respectful and defensive towards their brothers' positions as kings, even though they actively oppose their brothers' decisions and challenge their suitability to the role of king.
Daemon to Viserys in ep 1: "The blood of the dragon runs thick...he (Otto) doesn't protect you, I would."
Tumblr media
Aemond to Lucerys at Storm's End, about Aegon: "Did you really think that you could just fly about the realm trying to steal my brother's throne at no cost?"
Tumblr media
The duo also notably pursued their ambitions after their brothers were officially out of the picture, with Viserys dead and Aegon severely injured and incapacitated after the battle of Rook's Rest.
3. Both Daemon and Aemond have escaped marriages of duty, more or less. Daemon's marriage with Rhea Royce ended when he killed her. Aemond's betrothal to Floris Baratheon was dissolved or put on hold indefinitely after he killed Lucerys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Both men have been romantically entangled with lowborn women, who they tried to legitimise to no avail.
Daemon took Mysaria as his lady when he captured Dragonstone for himself, demanding that she be recognized as his wife. He also later consorts with Nettles, a young dragonseed, who he is forced to leave in order to preserve her from Rhaenyra's wrath.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aemond was besotted with Alys Rivers, a bastard woman in Harrenhal that was believed to be a woods witch skilled with potions and gifted with visions. He's assumed to have married her (as she was referred to as his widow) and she fights for their son's claim after Aemond's death.
Tumblr media
Aemond and Daemon are foils, different as they are similar. Second sons burdened with the demands of duty and loyalty, cursed with dreams of greatness never quite fully realized; yet ending it all fighting for the cause they believe in and for the people they love.

Barely a year later, in 123 AC, the fourteen-year-old princess gave birth to twins, a boy she named Jaehaerys and a girl called Jaehaera. Prince Aegon had heirs of his own now, the greens at court proclaimed happily. A dragon’s egg was placed in the cradle of each child, and two hatchlings soon came forth. Yet all was not well with these new twins. Jaehaera was tiny and slow to grow. She did not cry, she did not smile, she did none of the things a babe was meant to do. Her brother, whilst larger and more robust, was also less perfect than was expected of a Targaryen princeling, boasting six fingers on his left hand, and six toes upon each foot. -- Fire and Blood

let’s go mercilessly seek revenge and murder a defenseless and innocent 6yo in front of his mother because my inexperienced 14yo son who i deemed old enough to participate in war unsurprisingly dies in said war
do you hear how stupid that sounds?

thoughts about Laena and more
The statement “That show is disrespectful to its Black characters” is unfortunately applicable to almost every show ever broadcasted, which is a disheartening realization. In this instance, though, I’m talking about House of the Dragon.
Laena's erasure from Rhaenyra's life to make room for a friendship between two white women that did not exist in the original source material. She is isolated from her family so that Daemon can be separated from Rhaenyra, which isn't what happened in the books. It's frustrating to watch Black characters isolated and used as plot devices.
The show's treatment of Baela and Rhaena is also problematic. There are inconsistencies in the plot, such as Daemon ignoring Rhaena even though he didn't have a dragon until later in life. Baela going to foster at Driftmark when it should be Luke and Rhaena. It's disappointing that we don't see more of Laena with her family on Driftmark or her claiming Vhagar.
Additionally, it's strange that Jaehaerys is depicted as white as snow when his mother was Black and his father was at least half Black based on show lore. The Targaryens have historically intermarried with the Velaryons, so they shouldn't be all white, at least not at this point in their history. It seems like the show may have made the Velaryons Black solely to push the Strong boys' narrative, without considering the wider implications. This is negligent at best and malicious at worst.

Saying Jaehaerys & Jaehaera have "birth defects" is disgusting actually.
How is having extra toes and fingers a defect? I think having an extra finger would be cool. It's a mutation as inoffensive as Caraxes being a little different than other dragons.
And stigmatizing Jaehaera being neurodivergent is a new low. The way you talk about her makes me worried about how y'all would treat or think about my neurodivergent friends.

we're still on our way to Hotd's s2 and I already feel the same hopelessness I felt in Got s7 and s8. What comforts me is that just because a theory is popular doesn't mean it's going to happen on the show, remember the theory of Gendry being Robert and Cersei's son because the show posited that Cersei had a black-haired son by Robert? or the Tyrion Targaryen theory which was so popular in the fandom that if GRRM had ever given the green light I'm sure D&D would have done it. I hope certain paternity theories in hotd remain just that, theories.
I've no faith in HOTD anymore either since they've completely uprooted the original message and moral of the story for something far lesser (aka moved goalposts), but the twins not being Egg's theory is already debunked by the opening cinematic

The kids won't be bastards, I'm sure of that. The issue I have is the writers trying to undermine Helaena's suicide which was a consequence of being informed of Maelor's horrific death on orders of Rhaenyra by them trying to have Helaena already attempting suicide because Aemond rejects her, apparently... That's what leaks are saying is going to happen, allegedly.
It's just another attempt at washing Rhaenyra clean of her wrongdoings by already giving Helaena suicidal tendencies (which she didn't have before). It's lessening the future impact her baby's horrific murder will have on her. It's the same tactic they're doing with involving Dyanna, a girl raped by Aegon, in B&C. Everyone and their mothers will be calling B&C karmic retribution for Aegon because she's involved, mark my words.

While the whole segment of GOT where Lyanna names her son Aegon Targaryen was absolute dog shit and piss poor writing, I do commend the writers of HOTD for carrying the theme of why it is fucking stupid to name your kid Aegon.
