⚠️ Want all to be aware there is more to GA Family, née GAC, than G-rated Christmas movies. Though I’m including dates and details here in the spirit of being a completist, worth noting the funding and founding of this channel, which comes from the Donald Trump-aligned Hicks Equity Group, brings with it an explicit anti-diversity agenda, hiding under guise of harmless sounding words like “family-friendly” and “safe” programming. More detailed explanation here (bottom of page), and additional more recent thoughts, for those who want it. And if you’re looking for outside sources on GAF’s political affiliations and lack of inclusion, see these stories from The Daily Beast, Vulture, the L.A. Times and Bloomberg.

New Release Review: Under Wraps (2021)
Tumblr media
Premiering in October of 1997, Under Wraps was the inaugural Disney Channel Original Movie. The wildly popular cornerstone of the network's programming was, along with the likes of ABC's TGIF and Nickelodeon's SNICK, as close to appointment viewing as it got for '90s kids. Perhaps even more importantly, Under Wraps served as a gateway into the horror genre for many millennials. Before the age of streaming, if you didn't independently seek out the horror section at the video store or have a cool older relative to expose you to it, catching a mummy movie on the same channel you watched Disney cartoons and Boy Meets World reruns could have been your first exposure to the macabre.
Disney hopes to recapture the magic with a remake of Under Wraps, which will premiere on the Disney Channel before being made available on Disney+. The original movie was successful - and continues to hold up 24 years later - for several reasons; relatable kid leads, a great Halloween atmosphere, and a sense of humor chief among them. Director/co-writer Alex Zamm (A Christmas Prince, Inspector Gadget 2) and co-writer William Robertson (Inspector Gadget 2) smartly maintain those elements for the new iteration. In fact, all the main beats from Don Rhymer's (Rio, Big Momma's House) original script remain intact.
Tumblr media
12-year-olds Marshall (Malachi Barton, Stuck in the Middle) and Gilbert (Christian J. Simon, Sydney to the Max) are best friends despite being diametrically opposed when it comes to horror movies; Marshall can't get enough of them, decorating his entire room with monster masks, toys, and posters, while Gilbert is afraid of his own shadow. When they suspect their creepy neighbor, Kubot (Brent Stait, Andromeda), of stealing an ancient Egyptian mummy, the boys team up with their new classmate, Amy (Sophia Hammons), to sneak into his house and inadvertently bring the artifact back to life.
Like many of fiction's best monsters, the mummy (Phil Wright) - named Harold, in tribute to Marshall's hot sauce-loving grandfather - is not as frightening as he looks; he's merely misunderstood. The kids secretly befriend the lovable oaf, forming a bond similar to The Monster Squad. Upon learning that Harold only wants to be reunited with his love, they help him on his journey. But it's easier said than done, as Kubot and his goons are after him, and they only have until the end of Halloween to return him to his resting place before he turns to dust.
Tumblr media
Zamm and Robertson make some minor tweaks, most of which serve to contemporize the story. They play up the fish-out-of-water element with Harold encountering modern amenities like an autonomous vacuum and Siri-esque technology. Zamm also adds welcome diversity to the cast: Marshall is of Hispanic heritage, Gilbert as well as Marshall's mother's boyfriend (Jaime M. Callica, Tales from the Hood 3) are Black, Amy has two fathers, and the resident monster expert in whom the kids confide (Melanie Brook) is a young woman.
In addition to the monster in his life, Marshall faces common adolescent problems like struggling to accept his parents' divorce and conflicts with the school bully. The three child leads are likable and have a natural rapport. Stait, a veteran character actor, chews the scenery appropriately, while Wright utilizes his dance choreographer background to bring the mummy to life. The mummy makeup design, by Joel Echallier (1922, Freaks), is standard but effective, featuring an off-set jaw.
Tumblr media
Don't expect any radical changes from Under Wraps to justify its existence; it's more like Disney dug up the film's mummified remains and gave its sarcophagus a fresh coat of paint - and there's nothing wrong with that. It was made for a new generation, and hopefully it helps expose the target audience to the genre in an innocuous way. For a TV movie filmed on a limited budget in Canada during the pandemic, it never feels too cheap (although the third act’s much-hyped Halloween carnival is a tad underwhelming). It never feels dangerous and borders on corny at times, as one might expect from a horror movie for children, but it's a fun a Halloween treat nevertheless.
Under Wraps premieres on October 1 on Disney Channel and on October 8 on Disney+.

Hypnotic Ending Explained
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The following includes Hypnotic spoilers. Read our spoiler-free review here.
Hypnotic, the new Netflix thriller from directors Suzanne Coote and Matt Angel (The Open House), has arrived to scare the streaming service subscribers into a trance right before Halloween hits. Starring Midnight Mass’ Kate Siegel, Hypnotic centers on Jenn, a woman struggling after a miscarriage and who decides to seek professional help in the form of therapist Dr. Collin Meade (Jason O’Mara). Dr. Meade uses hypnosis on his patients to help them overcome their worst fears and Jenn decides to go under to determine how best to move on from her trauma and how to proceed in her relationship with her ex-fiancé.
After Jenn’s first hypnosis session, she blacks out in a grocery store parking lot. This occurred after she received a phone call from what sounds like Dr. Meade. When she comes to, she finds herself in her home with her ex-fiancé Brian (Jaime M. Callica) in anaphylactic shock. It appears he’s been fed sesame oil, which he is highly allergic toward. Jenn is aware of his allergy and has no memory of cooking the meal or anything after she received the call in the parking lot. She quickly determines that there must be some connection to the hypnosis, and after she brings her suspicions to Det. Wade Rollins (Dulé Hill), she discovers that Dr. Meade has a history of using “hypnotic suggestion” on his patients to deadly effect.
The ending of Hypnotic finds Jenn and Rollins discovering that Dr. Meade is actually named Julian Sullivan. Julian is the son of Dr. Xavier Sullivan, a man involved in the CIA’s MKUltra project during the 1960s and who taught his son Julian about hypnosis and hypnotic suggestion. Julian uses hypnosis on women who resemble his deceased wife Amy, placing them under hypnosis to act out his fondest memories of Amy. Jenn is the latest ringer for Amy, and Jenn’s “dreams” of romantic situations with Dr. Meade are implanted memories or actions acted out while Jenn was under hypnosis.
Trapped inside the former home of Xavier Sullivan, Jenn waits for Wade to arrive to her rescue. However, Wade struggles with Julian due to injuries sustained in a prior attack. Jenn fires a gun at Julian while he’s fighting with Wade and believes she kills her attacker. It’s revealed that this is all just more hypnotic suggestion, and that Julian came away from his fight with Wade basically unscathed. Trapped by Julian’s hypnotherapy trickery, Jenn’s last resort is waiting for Julian to use the phrase “my love” while under hypnosis. Jenn’s visit to a helpful, different hypnotherapist, Dr. Stella Graham (Tanja Dixon-Warren), allowed her to create a counter trigger for Julian’s hypnotic suggestion. Knowing that Julian referred to her as “my love” when Jenn recorded him during one of their sessions, “my love” is chosen as the counter trigger to free Jenn from all of Julian’s hypnotic triggers. When he utters the phrase, it works, freeing Jenn from Julian’s spell. She eventually recovers a weapon concealed on Wade’s ankle and kills Julian.
It’s a high-octane, reality-bending conclusion to a quick and fun horror thriller with such an interesting premise. There’s also some missing information in the backstory of Dr. Xavier Sullivan, should Netflix want to turn Hypnotic into a mini-horror franchise. We’ll have to wait and see if Hypnotic is able to cast Netflix subscribers under its spell, however.

Josie Hughes (Chaley Rose) is a hopeless romantic who believes in the perfect meet-cute and is looking for a grand gesture to sweep her off her feet, just like she sees in the old black-and-white movies she loves. She also believes the wedding bouquet finds its way to the person next to wed when the bride tosses it, as proven by her aunt’s getting married unexpectedly weeks after catching it at a family wedding 20 years before. A tight trio of friends since college, Josie, Athena (Rebecca Olson) and Emma (Luisa d’Oliveira) are immersed in last-minute prep for Emma’s wedding to Ted (Thomas Cadrot). A fourth member of their group is Alex (Nathan Witte), also a good friend since college, who secretly carries a torch for Josie. Emma encourages him to tell her how he feels but Alex doesn’t want to risk the friendship. But when he reveals that he has a partially written letter for Josie, Emma notes that it’s the kind of gesture that would sweep their friend off her feet. Keeping with her family’s tradition, Josie creates a special bouquet for Emma, personalized to represent her and Ted’s love story. At the reception, Alex tries to step out of the friend zone with Josie but his plan is thwarted when she literally bumps into fellow guest Will (Jaime M. Callica), a charming, big-time lawyer who asks her to dance before Alex has the chance. As Josie and Will chat there are sparks but it’s time for the bouquet toss so her Maid of Honor duties take her away from him. Athena and Brian (Casey Manderson) have dated for two years and, knowing a proposal is imminent, Josie assures her the bouquet has a destiny to fulfill. But when Emma lets her flowers fly, the unthinkable happens – it bounces from one pair of outstretched hands to the next until it lands with Josie, much to her and Athena’s dismay. Despite the bungled bouquet toss, Athena soon becomes engaged. But when the planning doesn’t go as Athena anticipated and a series of mishaps ensues, Josie’s convinced the blame lies with the bouquet ending up in her hands instead of Athena, the intended. When a grand gesture by Will ensures he and Josie cross paths again the two begin to date. Happy to be dating someone who seems to be perfect, she encourages Alex to do the same and sets up his online dating profile. But as Josie and Will spend more time together she questions if he’s right for her, despite trying to convince herself that catching the bouquet led them to each other. Coupled with the twinge of jealousy she feels when Alex begins dating, these doubts help her realize that what she was looking for has been in front of her all along. Hurt and angry when she learns that Alex accepted a new job in Chicago, it seems like all is lost. But just as the bouquet knows who to find, love finds its way and there may still be a chance for Josie and Alex to have their movie moment and live happily ever after.

Merry Liddle Christmas (Lifetime, 2019)
You brought Christmas to the ice palace!
Starring: Kelly Rowland, Thomas Cadrot, Jaime M. Callica, Latonya Williams
Plot Synopsis:This story of a woman trying to get her dysfunctional family to look picture perfect for the holidays, who falls in love with her neighbor amidst the chaos. (x)
In My Humble Opinion: There was a horrifying moment in Merry Liddle Christmas where I thought two characters were flirting only to realize they were siblings. Then later on, I became confused because they might not have been siblings they might have been in-laws. I’m still not completely sure. I’m kind of annoyed about it.
Merry Liddle Christmas has a lot of characters, but it does a terrible job at establishing them. There’s Kelly Rowland, who is uptight and wants the perfect christmas. There is a sister who is flirty and materialistic and has a son apparently. There is another sister who might actually be an in-law who just wants a crappy poem from her husband who is either Kelly Rowland’s in-law or her brother.. I’m not entirely sure.
Part of me feels like it’s my fault for not being able to give my full attention to these movies, but frankly I should not have to! The point of these made-for-TV Christmas movies is that they are disposable and easy to follow! I was able to watch Baking Christmas at 3 AM while coming down from a mental breakdown and not confuse any of the sibling characters one iota. Their plots were clear, and their arcs and relationships were presented clearly. It was perfect throwaway entertainment for me.
Merry Liddle Christmas wanted more from me, and in return I was getting much less. It’s not like any of the plot points were emotionally fulfilling to watch. Most were wrapped up in a single scene or two, outside of Kelly Rowland’s romance which just seemed to exist of various meet-cutes before they got together.
Merry Liddle Christmas has more star power to its name, but there are better family Christmas movies to watch this season. Family movies where you do not have to wonder if two characters are flirting, are in-laws or are blood relations. Watch those instead.
Watch If: You are looking for a fire tree, if you think Christmas is supposed to smell like gingerbread cookies or if you can’t date someone who hates broccoli.
Skip If: You have a fire extinguisher, if you play more games than just board games or if you like fruit cake.
Final Rating: ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
