Jewish singers of Western classical music
Compiling this list — the last in this series for the foreseeable future, although I’m well aware that there are others that I could do — has been a frustrating experience.
What I’m looking for, ultimately, is self-identification, which isn’t always forthcoming. And you can’t always trust Encyclopedia Judaica, which follows Israeli policy in determining Jewish status, i.e., one Jewish grandparent makes you Jewish, no matter what. (This is settled law in Israel, and it’s caused no end of trouble.)
Also, I’m not willing to knowingly include here the likes of Alma Gluck, who was a practicing Christian Scientist for most of her adult life, nor Richard Tauber, a life-long, if largely nominal, Roman Catholic who was bewildered to learn, in 1933, that he did in fact have a Jewish grand-parent. Since I’ve tended to err on the side of caution, there may be artists who should be on this list but aren’t.
You also won’t find here a number of artists whom my instincts tell me must be Jewish, but who are being, or were in their time, insufferably coy about it. (Jake Arditti, Beniamino Gigli, Jonas Kaufman, Selma Kurtz, Margarete Matzenauer, Jakub Józef Orliński, Annie Rosen, Regina Sarfaty: I’m looking at all of you.)
I’ve had to be vague about birthplaces in some cases, because some of these singers were born in jurisdictions that either no longer exist or whose names have changed. (Poland didn’t exist as a nation when Rosa Raisa was born there, and I don’t know what part of Poland — Austrian, German, or Russian — she came from.)
What applies to the earlier lists also applies here: I’ve included many of the younger ones solely on the basis of reputation, without having heard them. Not all are or were A-listers, but they are all people who sing or sang Western classical music for a living, or taught others to do so, or a combination of the two.
And finally, I should point out that while stage names are now a rare phenomenon in classical music, they were fairly common in the past — especially for singers! (Richard Tucker was born Reuben Ticker, for example.)

Six Psychopaths (!)
Here’s the list of men who ruined Mara Richardson’s life – or she says.
James Foster, 29, Architect (Michael B Jordan FC)
High School Sweethearts Gone Wrong
Mara was only seventeen years old she fell in love for the first time. The guy’s name was James Foster, he was popular, social and very outgoing. Absolutely her type. From outside, Mara seemed like the perfect girl anyone could ask for, she was sociable and talkative, charming and adaptable. But what her boyfriend didn’t know was how she could get clingy and possessive. Things got rough in time and he decided to break up with her. The puberty and Mara’s undiagnosed mental illness didn’t take the rejection well, she ended up almost harming him and herself. After the incident (she almost burned down James’ house), her mother sent Mara to a mental hospital where she stayed 17 months.
Chris Buchanan, 34, Photographer (Hayden Christensen FC)
It’s Really Complicated
The only guy Mara deeply loved. The others were merely obsession but Chris was different. He was nice, understanding and playful. They met in a party thrown by Mara’s college best friend, the spark between them was undeniable. After countless dates, cute gestures and late night conversations, they decided to become official. He was an attentive boyfriend, however he was too chill for his own good. He never understood Mara’s need of attention, he tried his best to give her what she wanted but it wasn’t enough. She got clingy, jealous and paranoid, constantly questioned his love for her. Chris really loved Mara, he cared about her deeply but he was also tired. Their relationship lasted two years, they broke up and got back together too many times. He’s the guy she’s still not over, she still calls him whenever she’s drunk and he always answers her calls even though he’s engaged to someone else.
Levi Sarfati, 43, Businessman (Ben Affleck FC)
Marilyn to Her Jackie
An affair to remember. Levi was a happily(!) married, emasculated middle aged man from Manhattan who had a workaholic, pregnant wife. He pretty much spent all of his time in bars, met new women and hit on them. Until Mara, he has never acted on his urges though, he flirted but didn’t go too far. As a queen of reckless decisions, Mara decided to give him a magical blow job in the restroom and they started having an affair. He would tell Mara that he’s going to leave his wife for her but that time has never come. In truth, he had his fun with Mara during his wife’s pregnancy but, of course, he never admitted that. He broke off things right after his wife gave a birth to their kid and left Mara with a broken heart.
Kyle Peck, 34, Stockbroker (Justin Timberlake FC)
American Psycho meets Bonnie Parker: A Wall Street Tale
After her break up, Mara decided to get her revenge by dating one of Levi’s friends. Kyle was your typical Wall Street guy. Sharply dressed, charismatic, charming and manipulative. A guy Mara would fall for in an instant. To be fair he was pretty vocal about his intentions from the start, he clearly stated that he didn’t want anything serious but Mara thought she could change him and ended up getting hurt. Kyle was a master manipulator, he would always find a way to make Mara feel guilty for expressing her frustration. It took six months for Mara to realize how much of an asshole he was, yet she chose to stay with him. He liked Mara in his own way though, he loved her attention, he loved the way she made him feel but that wasn’t enough for Mara. Her obsession with Kyle suddenly stopped when she’s found her shiny new toy.
Theodore Blumhurst, 38, OB/GYN (Jake Gyllenhaal FC)
These Violent Delights Have Violent Ends
Another emotionally unavailable man in Mara’s list. Theo and Mara met in a bar. It was your typical one night stand story; he was handsome, she was pretty, they got drunk together and ended up at his apartment. Mara was the pretty girl Theo loved being seen with. He would take her to fancy parties and cocktails, the sex was great and things were fine until Mara’s started having feelings for him. It took a month for her to get extremely clingy, she would stalk Theo, call him non stop and demand attention. She would trash his apartment if she saw him texting to another girl, hell they even got violent with each other several times. He truly left her mark on her once, it was a split lip. One night she’s seen him with another blonde in a bar, ended up causing a scene and throwing wine at his face which was the last straw for Theo. He blocked her from his phone and his social media accounts, told her to never call him again.
William Tucker, 33, Actor (Jamie Dornan FC)
Save the Drama for the Stage
Will was the hot actor everybody was in love with. Most girls would only see plays for him, he had an affair with the creative director, he always slept with interns, his co starts and other people from the crew -- and Mara wasn’t an exception. They quickly became friends with benefits, he would give Mara false hopes, he would make big promises -- he even said I love you several times and, of course, Mara fell for him. Will loved Mara though ,in the moment, he really meant it and then there's another moment where he realized he was also in love with his co star. His biggest mistake was admitting this to Mara. Out of spite, she decided to sleep with everybody in the company, she was already known as very promiscuous so she really didn’t need to try hard. Unfortunately, she got fired for sleeping with pretty much everyone.
