More on Jakey (or a day ending in -y)

Of course I've been thinking more about that anon ask I got yesterday. So much that I actually dreamed about Jake last night lmao

I've been thinking about the little bits of fics I've written in some posts on here, and how maybe it's true. Maybe I didn't show to full range of Jake's personality in what I've published.

I've written a lot about him, but I haven't written all that much *with* him, especially in scenes where he's more vulnerable. Mostly because I write bite sized fic passages on here, and the scenes where we see more the depths of Jake's emotions are longer and more complex to write.

The scenes where he shows his true emotions outside of their mind also get very heavy and depressing so....

I've shown the first important conversation Marc and Jake have in their innerspace and that one was pretty heavy too. It did show more of Jake caring about Marc though.

This long post is separated in two parts

First one, a bit more character analysis of Jake (because I haven't done it enough lmao)

I've written Jake & Marc fighting and being annoyed by each other, because that's entertaining. Same with Jake poking Marc, he gets some entertainment from that too.

Those are mostly the innerspace scenes with Jake I've posted. So yeah it showed him as more antagonistic.

Jake being defensive and antagonistic towards Marc

I've explained that one before. I'll expand on that a little bit here. To me it makes sense.

Jake is the most 'prideful' of the system. Because he defines himself by what he does, that's the only thing he had. But his biggest critic is himself, just like with the othet boys. Even more so with him though. Jake doesn't have the abyssimal sense of self-worth Marc has, but he's extremely perfectionist and harsh with himself. At the slightlest perceived fault he made, he'll be on his own case. And he'll just expect even more so from himself next time. Jake is Khonshu's precious boy, he's his perfect avatar. He rarely, if ever, disappointed Khonshu. But he's constantly disappointing himself.

Jake rarely ever feels shame, he never had anyone to embarrass, but he does feel disappointment from himself and others. And that's something he hates. He doesn't want to disappoint anyone.

So yes, he has the pride and ego the others lack, but that's because of what he does, of the only things he had in his life, of the fact that he's his harshest critic anyway and also because it's an extension of his role as a 'shield'.

As much as he doesn't want to be the emotional protector and says his role is only being the physical protector, his role still has repercussions on his emotions and personality. Him being defensive is an extension of his role as a 'shield', he's shielding himself too. It's a form of self-protection.

Those apply, again, way more with Jake's close circle than with anybody else he interacts with. Gina, for example, would have *no idea* he's like that.

Layla & Frenchie know he's like that a little bit, but not how truly a big part of him these are. Only Steven & Marc will find out, and only Khonshu knew.

So for starters, there's that in between Marc & Jake's relationship.

And then what fuels Jake's antagonism and defensiveness even more is that Marc *started* to be acerbic with Jake first. Their subconscious prevented Marc from knowing about Jake for a reason. Marc freaks out about Jake and he just can't accept him. This hurt Jake *a lot*. So Jake meets Marc where he's at and lashes out too.

It's like with Steven and Marc in season 1. The main difference here is that Jake doesn't forgive Marc while Marc always forgave Steven.

Marc also doesn't give Jake the opportunity to forgive him. He's always in attack mode when he thinks about Jake or talks to him or even sees him.

*Marc* has to learn to care about Jake. Jake cares a lot about Marc, even if he doesn't want to admit it, he always did. And again, it's when you're heartbroken that you can be the most cruel.

Jake is also bitter, because he thinks Marc wants to prevent him from having a life of his own. Before Marc had no control over that, but now? Jake isn't really wrong here.

So that's why most innerspace scenes I wrote with Jake had Jake angry/rude/purposefully antagonizing Marc.

And Jake is *very* easy to anger in the innerspace, but that's not the only emotion he has. He has *all* the emotions in here.

When Jake doesn't want to deal with Marc and/or Steven, or with his own emotions, and wants to have a little time off, he has a few places in their mindpalace he likes to go to be alone. That bar we saw in that new issue of Moon Knight? That's one. The other one is his cab. Not necessarily the white limo from the aftercredit. Maybe his first cab if he had any before that. He goes there to just take a break. Be in silence for awhile.

He doesn't want to go there to think, he doesn't want to think about anything. He goes there to take a cigarette, take a drink and just be.

Steven does join him in his cab after they start to get along. Jake becomes way less shitty towards Steven the moment Steven gives him a chance and gets less shitty with him too. They do talk about a lot of things there, important things, emotional ones too.

Jake can be, surprisingly to Steven and Marc, very mature, very wise and give great advices on tricky situations. But then be very immature on some other stuff.

Hiding versus Suppressing

Marc is the one who suppress his emotions. Jake doesn't. Suppressing emotions means Marc doesn't even allow himself to feel them. He tries to bulldoze them away, and that can cause a lot of problems in the long run.

Jake *hides* them from others, but he doesn't suppress them. He trained himself to be able to show an emotion sometimes opposite to the one he's feeling. He knew anyway that he wouldn't be fronting for long, and within a few hours max he'd be able to freely express them in their innerspace.

Now though, Jake is fronting for longer and longer. He still express his feelings internally but he has to keep fronting while doing that.

Why did he start doing that anyway ? If he's not ashamed of anything.

Well, other than because of the dam metaphor I've talked about yesterday, Jake does it because he doesn't want to attract attention. He's been used to not being seen, to do his things without anybody realizing he was there. Visibly showing off strong emotions would *attract* attention. Jake would be a really good spy tbh.

So that's another reason why he trained himself to appear so mellow, so level-tempered.

Again, if someone sees Jake being externally upset/showing negative emotions, know that he's feeling those at least 10x more strongly internally at the same time, that's when he 'cracks'.

Now here's a few fic scenes I've thought about but haven't actually written yet, for a reason or another, showing Jake's relationship with other people.

Second part, fic scenes ideas I had to showcase more of Jake's range of emotions

Flirting

I've shown him flirt with a few people, mostly to show his fun, charming side. So that one has been covered a little I think.

With strangers

I do have a small scene with only Jake (and Khonshu?) and his internal thoughts. It's a bit of an exploration of where he's at at the beginning, and how a random waitress saying his name (and not being called Marc) can brighten his day significantly.

With Steven

I've thought about a few conversations between them, mostly in the innerspace.

One I remember isn't super fun, but it does show that Jake cares about Steven. It's about Jake finding out he gave Steven a traumatic experience unintentionally when they were younger. Steven's memory of it resurfaces and they talk about it.

I think I could also write one with Jake helping Steven through his anxiety. Steven is usually the one who fronts to calm things down when either Jake or Marc are about to break down, but Steven also has his moments of heightened emotions. Mostly with his anxiety. So Jake fronts when Steven is about to get an anxiety attack. And sometimes Jake talks to him, helps him through it, since he's been there. He found his own tools to control his anxiety.

With Layla

I've shown how they'd get that flirty UST going on. They'd also become really good friends but I don't have any specific scene to show for it right now.

I did note down the dialog for their first few conversations though. I could write that one, although Jake does feel a bit distant at first, that's intentional. He's cautious and Layla just found out he exists, he doesn't know what she'll do and she doesn't know him.

With Khonshu

Jake does care about Khonshu, and I've explained why before. He doesn't want to stop being Moon Knight because he's developed a real relationship with Khonshu.

I wrote one minific with only them before, I don't have anything else ready enough with these two to post right now however.

With Jean-Paul

I talked a lot about how Jake loves Frenchie, how they've been fucking for years while Jake pretended to be Marc, how they're dating etc. But I haven't *written* any of those scenes when they're together did I?

There's a few I've been thinking about that I could write. Mostly when Jake reconnected with Frenchie for the first time (I did like that dialog but I didn't write it down 😭), or when Frenchie gives him the 'what are we' question, or when Marc interfered in their relationship and tried to 'break up' with Frenchie (but that's a very pissed off Jake soo xD), or Jake explaining a little more to Frenchie why he avoids physical touches, or Jake trying to get more physical with him.

I can do most of them right now.

I think I wrote one about Jake deciding he wanted to be able to give/take physical touches now, but that was a scene with Layla and he ended up leaving because it was too much.

With Matt

I've thought of a few scenes with Jake/Matt. After all, it's Jake who starts flirting with Matt, and he does this *for* Marc. It's one of his ways to take care of Marc, to do something nice for him. But Jake catches feelings for Matt.

I had a nice moment showing Jake's progress with touches and Matt's understanding of him.

There's also scenes with Marc regretting his decision to not take Jake up on his offer with Matt, then Marc kissing Matt as Jake. In that one Jake gets through a lot of different emotions lmao.

Is there any of those people would like to read ? Which ones should I write next to share with you ?

In one of S3 episodes of BtVS, can't remember which one, Angel was reading 'La Nausée (Nausea)' by Jean-Paul Sartre. It's one of my absolute favorite books and I think the reference compliments his character quite nicely and fits into his whole 'existential' vibe beautifully. My question is have you read this book? And if that's not the case, what books can you see him reading and loving? Sorry if you've got no headcanons for this, it's just that I loooove your meta for Angel and am curious :)

I’ve been very interested in existentialism/absurdism/nihilism since high school. I’ve read Camus (The Stranger is one of my favorite books), Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche (or rather, I attempted to read those last two), and I’ve wanted to read Nausea for a long time now. I kind of stopped reading men though, but one day I’ll go back and read all of those male-written classics. I still want to read more philosophers, or read about philosophy, because it’s a big passion of mine.

I too think Nausea fits Angel’s character very well. He’s all about free will, taking responsibility for his life, and finding a higher, humanitarian, purpose to give his life meaning even after death (though Angel isn’t worried about “living on” after he dies or about his death being meaningful; he just wants his actions to have an impact that continues on after his death, because he wants them to inspire others to take up his cause).

I don’t have a headcanon for what books Angel might enjoy reading, but this is still a very interesting question! I’m not sure I’ve read enough books yet to have an answer. But I’m going to give it a shot regardless. My dad is a big reader and I know about plenty of books even without having read them. So...

Kafka: He influenced Sartre and Camus, and his books often explore father/son relationships, so I think Angel would definitely relate to that.

Dostoevsky: Also influenced a lot of existentialist writers, and I think his books would be right up his alley. I’ve only read one of his books, but my dad has read a lot of them. Christianity, ethics, psychology, etc. sound like Angel to me.

The Great Gatsby: I really enjoyed this book, and I remember how one quote in particular resonated with me: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” I think this describes soulless vampires very well. They destroy things, kill people, ruin families, and don’t care one bit. I think, because Angel used to be one of them, he knew he had to take responsibility for his old actions and the actions of other soulless vampires. He had to be the one to clean up their messes and prevent them from making others.

To Kill a Mockingbird: It’s a really cute book, and also a very important one. I think Angel would like Atticus Finch, perhaps be inspired by him.

I think Angel probably enjoys poetry (he gave Buffy a poetry book), and romance novels in particular. He’s a bit of a romantic. Maybe he likes Shakespeare? He might enjoy reading a lot of the epic classics (like Moby Dick). Also, he’s a bit of a nerd, so I can totally picture him reading Lord of the Rings or whatever.

In general, Angel probably prefers books that explore the human nature, the meaning of life, free will and responsibility, complex family relations.

You have no idea what you've just unleashed! Because it will drive me crazy if I don't I'll cover all my muses who I consider plural even if they don't fit into the typical framework. Also going to be working off of my expanded muse list which I'll be sharing the doc for sooner or later.

This is going to be long and discuss a lot of triggering topics so under the cut it goes.

Jean-Paul & Azrael (& Others)

They are a traumagenic osdd-1b system which was pro/grammed by their abusers, The Order of Saint Dumas. They were the victims of ram/coa (Ri/tual abuse, mind con/trol, & or/ganizationed abuse). However for safety and respect reasons their system's members are only drawn from comics or other experiences they have. If you look into it on your own, please be extremely careful, actual harm can come from researching ram/coa for survivors of it.

At any rate, for the majority of his life Jean-Paul was unaware of the system, and believed that the others in it only formed when he was an adult. However Azrael had formed when they were children as a protector and information holder, and Ascalon formed as a holder of a lot of the programming they received. Jean-Paul only recently as of my Canon learned Azrael originates from their childhood.

Jean-Paul learned after his father's death of the alias Azrael and took it up, unintentionally also letting Azrael take the reigns and becoming aware of them.

In adulthood they've as of current blog canon formed two more headmates. Azbats, who splintered from Azrael when they collectively became Batman. And The Voice That Binds, who formed from the trauma of being controlled and turned evil by Darkseid.

Ascalon, Azbats, and The Voice That Binds are currently dormant in the system meaning they aren't conscious and can't front (Have control of the body/forefront of the mind).

Also up until recently, Jean-Paul was a bad host. While he handled the outerworld alright, he kept Azrael under tight control and used Azrael as a scapegoat. They are in the process of both healing from that and trusting each other.

June Moone & Enchantress

While not a system they are plural as they share a body and mind. The closest to relevant terms for them would be spiritual plurality, and Enchantress would be considered a walk in (member that came from an external source) while June is the host.

They have a rather dysfunctional relationship with each other and fight for dominance over their life. However without the other their life would be a lot more empty.

This explanation and dynamic is pretty much the same on a surface level for Jason Blood & Etrigan, and Kayn & Rhaast.

Harvey Dent & Two Face

They are a traumagenic osdd-1b system that formed in adulthood after Harvey's infamous assault. Though the groundwork came from an abusive childhood. They both act as hosts and are prone to switching as a result of a coin flip.

Jeannette & Therese Voerman

They are a traumagenic D.I.D system that was formed in childhood due to horroriftic abuse and grooming and then exasperated when they were turned into a kindred.

They have a very tumultuous relationship with each other due to opposing personalities and political beliefs.

To the outside world they are known as a pair of feuding twin sisters, though their plurality is an open secret around L.A.

Lucien & Mollymauk & Kingsley

The circumstances of their plurality is unlike anything possible on earth. In modern verses they are a D.I.D system where only one headmate is active at one time as the host while any others that exist are permanently dormant.

Anders & Justice

They are another case of possession however do begin functioning like a more mundane system rather quickly. Anders being the regular host and Justice taking up the role of a protector. In modern verses they are a spiritual non disordered (so far as the plural part goes) system, where the system stuff does help them cope with trauma and mental illnesses.

Fun fact this description is the closest to my (the mun's) system.

Harrier Du Bois

He is a median system without a specific origin label. Being a median system most members of the system are more shallow than a typical person and could be described accurately as parts of Harry. Harry is also the only fronter.

Toko Fukawa & Syo

A thing to note is that Syo is not the spirit of the dead child of one of the body's mothers, but was partially formed due to the unique trauma they were subjected to due to being the maybe baby of both mothers.

They are a traumagenic D.I.D system formed in childhood due to bullying and abuse at home. Toko is original to the body Syo formed while they were in their childhood. Toko is the main host and Syo uses no role labels.

Also! Syo being a serial killer is very stereotypical of fictional deceptions of plurality (which has no real basis in reality), I lean mostly into when her character starts growing past that.

Hajime Hinata & Izuru Kamakura

They are a non-disordered system with an unspecified origin because how the hell do you explain becoming a whole separate person as a result of experimental brain surgery. After Izuru was created until the neo-world program Hajime was dormant, then for a while after the program Izuru was dormant and Hajime was in denial of being plural. Till eventually they manage to work things out and become co-hosts.

Yumeto Ariyoshi & Isami Kanda

Korekiyo Shinguji

They are a traumagenic OSDD-1B system that formed in Yumeto's childhood due to abuse from his father.

Isami is a factive of Izuru Kamakura, which in their case means their internal appearance is based off of Izuru, and they have a similar personality basis. They also picked their name on purpose to have the same initials. Isami is a protector, first from their dad, and then later from Hope's Peak.

Due to the twist of the game the actual origins of his plurality are unclear. By the backstory we know though they'd be a non-disordered thoughtform system, meaning that Korekiyo purposefully created a headmate, in this case, based off of his abusive older sister.

This is flat out the most dysfunctional system on the entire blog because Korekiyo is flat out being abused by the thoughtform and driven into becoming a serial killer by her. I straight up will not be playing her on this blog because that would be uncomfortable for everyone involved.

In any verse where he survives long enough to eventually start healing, Korekiyo dismisses the thoughtform and does not ever create any new ones.

Sword of Azrael #4 Meta: The dysfunction of the system, The sin of a good man, & The humbling of an angel

Issue 4 is what I would consider a turning point in the character growth of both Jean-Paul and Azrael.

Azrael has faced undeniable proof that they are not an angel, and that everything they had been taught was a lie. All the killing and dying he remembers and has been through, something that has traumatized them, was all done in the name of a heretical liar. The exact type of person he thought was is natural foe.

Jean-Paul was forced into being the one to fight, and ultimately kill Satan. And and to resort to trickery to get Satan to let his guard down, and then killed him in one of the least dignified ways possible. Giving Satan a slow and painful death, only feet away from something that could save him.

Before committing that deed however, Jean-Paul tried to call Azrael to the front, saying “This is your job.” about Azrael and the ugly deed. He screamed out the angel’s name, and Azrael did not respond. Azrael did not front for the murder. Jean-Paul cursed at him, and then had to do it himself.

A thing I find interesting is how Jean-Paul resorted to the exact same thing The Order of St. Dumas did, using Azrael as a weapon of death with no concern for their well being, to keep their own hands clean. All throughout the comic Jean-Paul has acted as if Azrael is a creature of wanton violence, calmed by tales of the gruesome deaths of saints and eager to kill anyone in his way.

From what we’ve seen of Azrael, this isn’t true. They have been cooperative, helping Jean-Paul unlock their repressed memories and uncover how they were created. He was traumatized by all the memories of past Azrael’s murders and deaths. They have been annoyed at the tales of saints. He wanted to protect their body. By no means is he a saint, but he is no devil either.

However Jean-Paul, even with all of this information, does not seem to recognize that. Can’t seem to realize that he is the one comforted by the grim tales of saints and that he can be just as brutal as Azrael when push comes to shove.

Often in media with systems (or entities resembling systems) you ave the host (in this case JPV) who is a normal, down to earth person. Then you have a violent, scary alter/headmate (such as Azrael). The host is near flawless or just has minor ones, and the scary headmate generally is pretty one note.

This hasn’t been the case in Sword of Azrael, Jean-Paul is just as messed up as Azrael, and to boot is pretty bad at being a host. Hosts in functional systems need to have good communication with the other headmates, be willing to listen to them and their concerns, and ultimately come to compromises where possible. Jean-Paul can barely mange to communicate, and even when he does, he isn’t really listening to Azrael, mostly focusing on his own issues and external problems. Which do deserve attention, however with systems generally you want to get everybody on the same page if at all possible.

These problems Jean-Paul has as a host are common, especially with hosts that have ‘scary’ headmates, and especially with hosts that are (or believe they are) the original to the body. It’s certainly something I’d love to see growth on, either with Jean-Paul learning to do better, or Azrael demanding better.

Then when it comes to Azrael he’s been growing and is now entering a crisis of faith, which has gotta be tough, The very foundation which they were formed upon has just fallen. And the first thing he’s done since that revelation was to deny the role he was groomed for, to not be Jean-Paul’s weapon.

Perhaps, just maybe he is starting to see that he is something more than a weapon, something more than angel.

Perhaps Azrael is realizing that he is a person.

The Youngest

They talk down to you, as though you couldn’t possibly understand. They speak down to you in a language consisting only of simple, happy concepts, unaware that you hear their whispered conversations in the dark. Funnily enough, they don’t know how much they miss, that the many voices that call to you from elsewhere are standing right in front of them. They don’t see, but you do. You will make these overlooked souls into friends and they will soak up the loneliness that has seeped into your world. You miss when it was easy to spend time with those you love, when it was a given, as sure as the sun rising in the morning. But still, they think you don’t understand. How can they think that when you love them so? And after all, love is just understanding.

The Father

You’ve made mistakes. You see them play out on an endless and nauseating loop whenever you close your eyes. If you could just interfere! Somehow pass on what knowledge you now possess to the person you were then. Of course, now you know, you know, YOU KNOW. But what’s done is done, leaving you behind, holding the shards of what you broke in your bleeding and calloused hands. 2. what’s the worst thing about shipping for you?

Trying to figure out how to naturally get the characters together. I just struggle so much to figure out when is an appropriate time for them to like, have formed a crush or confess their feelings.

For JPV it'd have to be a character from his solo, Lilhy, who is a member of The Order of St. Dumas, defected, but then turned right back around and rebuilt the order and in canon got JPV killed at the end of his solo. It's really just not a dynamic I want to see my boy in.

As for other muses I've got a notable one for a muse I only rp in groups, Quentin Quire. Him with Nathaniel Carver is just a nope for me as I once did rp with someone who was a creep and just ruined it for me, and I wasn't passionate enough about the ship to try and move past it.

25. did you ever play a breakup?

Not on tumblr, but once in a private rp me and the other mun had been trying to set up a ship but it just was not working out at all and we both realized that his muse needed to get out the situation. Technically they never got together but it certainly did feel like a break up.

35. how would your muse react to someone flirting with them?

Jean-Paul would potentially be oblivious if it was subtle flirting. However if he does pick up on it he will be very flustered at first, we're talking red in the face and running and hiding levels of flustered.

Once more used to romance and such I think he'd be flattered and a bit awkward but like appreciative. Pretty unlikely to flirt back though unless he was already in a relationship with the person.

Jean-Paul Valley & Azrael | Apex Verse Info

Behold an information post for JPV & Azrael’s crossover verse with apex legends, cause boy have my thoughts about this have gotten out of control. The info is under the cut cause this ended up being 2000+ words.

This is subject to change as I learn more about the lore of the game, think of new things, and as events occur that I feel are worth mentioning. If/when I edit this post I will include ‘patch’ notes at the bottom of the post.

Also, please take the TWs in the tags seriously as this post does go over a lot of the childhood and cult abuse which they have gone through along with themes of violence, death, and mental illness.

Without further ado, here is the info:

Background

Jean-Paul originally is from Gaea, having lived in a version of Gotham City (here leaning more into neon noir than gothic, with it’s corruption coming from top execs and the like draining the city of it’s resources leaving the poor of the city to fend for themselves.)

His early life was spent alone or under the care of his tutor for the most part, because as far as he was away his father was a respectable mercenary frequently busy with work thanks to the politically unstable-ness of the outlands. They did not attend public school, instead being taught by a private tutor his father hired.

Unknowingly to JPV they were a member of The Order of St. Dumas who in addition to their warped teachings about the universe was also mentally abusing, brainwashing, and grooming JPV to become the next Azrael, resulting in JPV developing OSDD-1b and the beginnings of Azrael forming. JP would be unaware of this for years to come.

In his spare time they developed an interest in technology and how it works, specifically computers. On the rare times that his father was present the man did encourage this interest and exploring it, secretly hoping it would lead JP away from the order.

This lead him to attending Gotham U as a young adult, majoring in computer science. He really did love the program and was planning a future career as a Computer Systems Analyst.

They did notice in this time that he had periods of time where he;d just end up staring off into space, or missing what people were saying to him, or just feeling a disconnect with his body, but he dismissed those things as just stress from uni.

He couldn’t examine his life too closely, it wasn’t that he didn’t want to, they just couldn’t. Any mental road that started going that direction just left him feeling disoriented, anxious, or sick. So he just didn’t.

At least not until his father arrived at his back door, bleeding out in a strange costume. His father, Jean-Paul Ludovic Valley Sr. was the Azrael before JP, the personal assassin of The Order of St. Dumas. His father gave him a number to call for body removal, spoke of a secretive place on Psamathe away from it’s civilization, and of JP’s inheritance before dying in JP’s arms.

Not sure what else to do he called the number, which resulted in strange people coming and taking the body away without a word. Even now he has no idea what ended up happening to his father’s body.

He also received his inheritance, it was enough money to do pretty much anything he wanted. However, the mystery over what his father spoke of, and what had happened that lead to his death meant that he departed Gotham and Gaea to investigate.

Searching the recesses of Psamathe eventually lead him to Nomoz and to The Order of St. Dumas who were quick to activate the brainwashing they had done to him as a child and unleash Azrael.

Azrael was born of internalizing the Order’s teachings as a survival method, and due to just how intense their brainwashing and abuse was. Now in the hands of The Order of St. Dumas that brainwashing was only strengthened and he quickly was ready to be their assassin.

The stress on both Azrael, and internally Jean-Paul along with further brainwashing lead to them fracturing more, however the headmates who formed from this have not made themself(s) known to JP or Azrael.

This all however did reveal a few truths of their past namely; Their body had been genetically engineered by the Order to be an ideal fighter.

It did eventually become apparent that Jean-Paul was still around, and the attempts to wipe out his identity completely had not worked, so the Order begrudgingly had to just deal with it, and make sure that JP would never begin to feel empowered enough to leave, get help, or stop Azrael from carrying out his tasks and duties.

So long as he behaved and obeyed his superiors, he was safe. That was his world now.

Azrael was sent on many different missions to benefit The Order of St. Dumas, assassinating their enemies and rivals, stealing things of use to them, and investigating things of interest to them. In this he honed his skills and found some sense of fulfillment. In his mind he was following holy orders after all, and what else is an angel to do?

The leash on both of them got a little longer, a little less tight as it became clear to the Order that both JP and Azrael would stay on their own. They could be allowed to spend an afternoon doing what they wanted before carrying out a mission if the timeline worked out. They didn’t just have to be on standby unless on a mission.

There still was a leash though, JP still had to live in their sanctuary and couldn’t regularly have conversation with outsiders. Azrael didn’t even bother to see how far the rope around his neck went, they didn’t care to, staying right by their commanders side.

They could live with this...

Something changed tough. The Order saw an opportunity to fill their coffers and increase their standing with the Syndicate. Having Azrael compete in the Apex Games and letting the Syndicate know that they could call in a favor or two to get rid of one or two people, something they’ll keep in their back pocket for sure.

Both JP and Azrael were rather confused when they were given the order, but could do little to argue against it. Winning funds for the Order, and gaining some glory for them, was a reasonable enough goal they guessed? They had to accept it.

So soon they were sent off to join the ranks of the Apex Legends, the leash around their neck gaining even more slack thanks to the circumstances, but the dangers of disobeying the Order ever present.

The Order of St. Dumas

The Order of St. Dumas is a christian cult which started after the crusades on earth. They were slow to move off of earth when space travel started to become available however eventually realized that any luxury or glory they could find for the their sect would be on other planets.

They’ve operated in the shadows, trying to gather strength and sway like what they once ad in the very very old days. And given just how wide the universe had became, there were plenty of dark corners to dig their claws into and establish a good foothold.

As war gripped the universe they did their best to stay out of it, it could could pull too many of their secrets into the light, and they wanted to hedge their bets given just how much was at stake. So each time a war was over and a winner was clear they spent a lot of time kissing ass and making connections with the winners.

They established their main base/sanctuary on Psamathe for the comfort and convenience of the richest and most powerful members of the Order. Placing it far enough out of the way that they could be reasonably assured that they would not be bothered.

Azrael & The Order

Since the Order’s creation they have had an assassin whom they call Azrael, the angel of death. The first few were zealots who had joined the Order of their freewill, but as the Order closed itself off it became a hereditary role, and that meant that each first born son of the last Azrael had to be made into an ideal assassin and weapon, which quickly turned them towards abusing and brainwashing their future Azrael’s.

As time progressed their methods for indoctrination and the creation of Azrael became more and more refined, starting to pick out the partners for their Azrael’s to have better control over the next generation. Learning more of psychology and mental tricks to use to help weaken the child’s willpower. And drugs and genetic enhancements to make their body more dangerous.

Publicly Available Information

Jean-Paul/Azrael was publicly announced when they joined the games as such:

“Jean-Paul Valley, better known as Azrael, is a warrior on a holy mission. Having originally came from a small religious group known as The Order of St. Dumas. He’s joined the games thanks to what he’d call a divine calling. Wielding flame and blade he is a dangerous and unique Legend to face on the battlegrounds.”

The Order of St. Dumas is known to be a small Christian sect who rarely if ever accept new members. It’s members list is private and little is known about their traditions or practices. Most assume they just have a few fringe beliefs that lead to being an off-shoot of Catholicism.

Digging through his social media, public records, and interviews can reveal the following

He once attended Gotham U majoring in Computer Science before leaving in his first year for unknown reasons.

They were privately trained. Unknown where.

They seem to follow a form of Christianity which on the surface seems similar to Catholic Christianity

He is single

They do not fill out a lot of information on social media or use it much, really only to share stuff related to the games and the ever so occasionally picture of interesting places he has came across.

He is familiar with Psamathe given his reactions during games set in Olympus.

Things that are not publicly known

The Order of St. Dumas is an abusive cult which tampers with events through conspiracy and assassination to benefit themselves. And that Azrael is their assassin and a victim of them

That Jean-Paul and Azrael are not the same person, but instead two people in a system with each other.

For that matter any of their mental health issues. While of course it’s been impossible to hide all their symptoms it has never been publicly addressed and the notice telling ones have been as well hidden as they possibly can be.

That there have been any prior Azraels.

They are not public about being queer in any way.

Apex Games Kit

Unless something goes terribly wrong Azrael is always the one fronting while on the battlegrounds of the game. Azrael is an Offensive Legend with the following abilities

Grappling Hook - Tactical

A grappling hook that when activated pulls him quickly towards where he targeted it, it is built into his gauntlets. This is meant to give him the ability to catch up to people or reach them if the have the high ground. In game it would have no effect if they targeted a person with it, however in writing it would have the sort of effects you would expect.

Death’s Blessing - Passive

For each killing blow he gets with a melee attack his damage increases and he receives a short (1-3 second) regeneration effect to his health. This means they ramp up significantly in danger the longer he is been in the match and able to get kills.

Angel’s Wraith - Ultimate

Azrael unsheathes the sword on his back and lights it ablaze. In this state any melee damage they deal leaves a damage tick on it’s victim and after getting a kill from either melee damage or fire tick damage he receives a short speed buff.

The effects of death’s blessing are still in effect and fire tick kills also activate it’s effects.

Melee

He uses retractable blades from his gauntlets instead of punches or kicks unless otherwise stated.

Other Differences

Azrael is familiar with what we would call modern technology but what would be terribly out of date by the standards of this universe. So he can handle guns, phone calls, email, and stuff like that but more advance things like how the shields work he doesn’t understand.

Jean-Paul has never adopted his cat Georgie due to still being with the Order.

They are still in deep with The Order of St. Dumas and since becoming aware of them, have never been able to leave them. As such they are both in far worse mental state than they are in other verses. Though they have still manged to figure out that they are plural just to avoid confusion in writing.

They lack most of his canon connections due to the impossibility of making any of them make any sense in this setting. Should a batfam rper ever wanna rp in this verse with me this can be subject to change.

it's the "i love you" we use every time we finish up a call with our mom, every time we want to offer our friends a bit of encouragement, the welcome home kiss on the cheek we give our lover every day. it's sending them pictures you know they'll laugh at, buying them strange little nothings that you know they'll like. it's having their bagel order memorized and setting their birthday as your password. somehow, their name weaves its way into almost every funny story you share with others. it's brief, casual, it's a habit. we aren't even aware we do it. it says that love is cradled lightly in your heart, generously given, spilling out into the world unbeknownst to you, making up the web of delicate threads that hold us all together.
