jeff andonuts for the ask game? 6 and 25!!
6.) oh, we don't have much in common but his introduction always stood out to me as a kid. he lists out all his "unacceptable" traits, even random things like near-sightedness (which we both have), and ends it with "but that's who i am. friends?" i feel ya lil buddy
25.) that same introduction made me adore him. jeff's storyline is my favorite out of the chosen 4, so i always took very good care of him (never let him die!) and valued him as a party member

I Wish | Part 4
Tumblr media
They were playing first. Their kit was on a real stage, set up across from where the ‘host’ would sit, along with a long couch and an extra chair set closest to the host’s desk.
They’d be taping live, which meant real singing, real playing, and Eddie felt… alive.
He expected to feel terrified, out of his depth, expected to be a complete shambles but Steve was right. Eddie felt at peace on stage. He knew the lyrics, they came to him one after the other without any delay, as if he were the one who’d written them instead of a man he didn’t, and frankly didn’t want to know.
He bounced around the stage like a teenager, exuberant, blind to the cameras, to the lights, the laughter mid-way through his lyrics was real, cackled down a microphone alongside Jeff who seemed just as thrilled to be there as he did, their smiles real their energy electric, their chemistry like lightning and where they were, what they’d accomplished no matter how hard it’d been to get there, they’d captured that lightning, bottled it.
For a brief moment, he caught Steve’s eye, the Genie off to the side of the stage, watching through the curtains that lead back behind it all, saw him smile, A sun’s worth of warmth radiating from that soft grin, a true cherry on the top of the sundae that was his life in that moment.
Then the climax, the ending riff, Jeff taking them home with the last few chords, and they were done, final note echoing through the studio until the audiences cheers replaced the ebbing echo of that final note.
It blew by so fast, Eddie barely remembered what he’d done, what he’d sang, but he’d done it.
His chest ached, his skin felt clammy, his hair was a mess that’d be fixed before they moved onto the actual talk show element of the talk show, but nothing could kill that high. He didn’t know how he could have possibly gotten addicted to anything but the thrill of being on that stage, couldn’t imagine the buzz he’d have gotten from something like The Garden if a talk show stage had given him that.
He wanted to savour it, wanted to celebrate, to ricochet off of the walls with his friends, and turning around he expected to be able to do that, but—
They weren’t on that level with him.
Gareth was already grabbing a bottle of water, hopping from the stage to meet with his own small group of stylists, Dougie had already set his bass down, his attention on getting himself backstage too, and Jeff… well, Jeff was already gone, just the sight of his back disappearing beyond the curtain, patting Steve on the shoulder as he walked past him.
Steve, who could only offer that same damned sympathetic smile before he motioned with a gentle nod of his head to return to backstage.
It wasn’t the same for them. They’d done this a thousand times, talk shows, award shows, concerts, basement gigs, dive bars, the works, they’d been around the block, done the song and dance, a talk show wasn’t anything huge for them, it wasn’t an accomplishment and even though they had all that energy during the performance it wasn’t for anyone. They didn’t have to stick around and be full of life and excitement, the audience didn’t expect it, they had the claps, the cheers, and then once the prompters cued silence, it went quiet.
They could just. Go through the motions.
He set his guitar down in its stand, he didn’t recognise it, it wasn’t his Warlock, he had no idea where his sweetheart was now, did he still have it? He didn’t know, it wasn’t in the hotel room, he’d have for sure noticed it there. There was no time to linger on that though.
His team of stylists were rushing to collect him, he didn’t even have a moment to speak to Steve before he was whisked back to his dressing room, didn’t get a moment to decompress before he was cleaned up, hair fixed, clothes changed, and anti-glare makeup reapplied for the cameras.
A whirlwind of things happening all around him and all he could do was sit there and wonder just when his friends had lost the spark for it all. Which year had been the last time they’d picked up their instruments as if it were the first time. Which year had they stopped treating their fame, their opportunities as a miracle and started treating it like just another Tuesday.
He really was trying to see the positives though, having gotten a glimpse of the highs while on that stage, he knew it couldn’t be all bad, there had to be more good because why else would they continue if the rest wasn’t worth it in some way?
There had to be other highs right?
Eddie was waiting, waiting for their cue to join the host up on stage when everything became just a little. Weird. Time slowed, the movements of everyone around him became sluggish, lagging, as though someone had actually slowed time for everyone but himself “Alright, so—” Eddie damn near jumped out of his skin as Steve appeared at his side
“Is this you?” He motioned to the state of the people around him, he could see Gareth nearby in an incredibly slowed down attempt to ‘quickly’ eat a cream donut before they joined the host on set, the sight of cream slow-mo bursting from the other end of the donut one that he would never forget ever, it was seared into his brain and would remain there regardless of whether or not he went home.
Steve nodded his head “I wanted to give you a heads up, everything is happening so fast and you’re super overstimulated right now.” True, he felt like his nervous system was about to anxiety its way out of the nearest window. Steve rounded him though, stood in front of him, then reached to rest both hands on Eddie’s biceps, holding him, grounding him, eyes locked, Eddie’s focus had to stay on Steve, as if it could ever stray. “Just breathe, the host, Jimmy? He’s great, a really nice guy. He’s a singer, not professionally but he sings, got his start in comedy. He’s respectful, and he’s not going to try and trip anyone up. I would not have dropped you on some Larry King shit show, I swear. There’s gonna be a few questions about your tour, and then he’s probably going to have you play some fun little game with him, it’s going to be okay.”
“A—a game?”
“Yeah, Jimmy isn’t usually a strictly business kinda guy, I’m surprised he didn’t have you tape some weird little opener with him, they might do that in a bit once he’s met you all properly. Listen, you’ve never been on here before, so don’t think you have to pretend to know him personally. Just be yourself an you’ll be fine.” Steve had so much faith in him, and while Eddie didn’t really believe there to be any grounds for that faith given how short their time together had been, it felt nice to have it shown so freely.
Even if he couldn't help but ask, “…why are you so nice to me, Steve?”
“I told you already, I like you.” Steve brushed a stray curl away from Eddie’s face with that same warm smile, Eddie’s poor little heart thudding heavily against his ribcage. Wasn’t he a little old to be blushing like a school girl? Maybe physically, but he sure as shit felt that warmth in his cheeks anyway. He sure as shit felt the need to hide behind his hair that he currently couldn’t do. “You have a good heart, Eddie…” Steve pressed a gentle hand to his chest, fingertips resting atop his rapidly thumping heart “filled with all the right stuff.”
Don’t develop feelings for a Genie, don’t develop feelings for a Genie, dooooon’t develop feelings. For. A. GENIE.
If nothing else it was UNETHICAL.
Time returned to its natural state without warning, momentarily throwing Eddie for another loop because Steve wasn’t there anymore. Just his friends. Gareth shoving a new shirt over his head, Jeff fixing his funny little bow tie, Dougie sniff testing the shirt he was wearing as if he hadn't just put it on, last minute fixes before—
“Please help me welcome to the stage, Corroded Coffin!!” Cue the applause, and they were on. His three friends headed on first, Gareth being the only one who looked back at Eddie, Eddie who'd delayed for a second longer, having taken a step and slammed directly into a wall of nerves. Gareth took his hand without comment, and coaxed him out, a nerve destroying smile on his face that made everything just a little less scary.
If Gareth could handle it, little no-longer-baby-faced Gareth who once upon a time Eddie had looked after in his first year of high-school, all the way back when he was wide-eyed and scared of the rapidly changing world around him, Eddie could handle it.
He’d be fine.
He'd be fine.

The captain’s laugh
Thinking of Buggy laughing without a care in the world and combining that with Jeff Ward's brilliant smile made me fall into the depths of angst again
This happens when he's out on the sea longing from a distance while you're taken to Makara (from 'The Sea Circus Captain')
Click on picture for more quality 🥹
Tumblr media
The crew only heard it rarely, mostly in the dead of night when most of them were asleep. Golden light escaped through the cracks of the doors to the captain's quarters.
No one was welcome there except you. And it was evident you were there with him, it was the only time they heard his true laugh. The one that wasn't like the others, when he put on a show or intimidated his enemies. This one felt free that if anyone had the privilege of listening to it, it made them feel a little less lonely. And it was clear that you were the most privileged, cause you heard it the most often.
He held that power within him, to make a dire situation seem light and though the seas had vicious pirates and captains of its own. Those that looked like monsters and were monsters. Buggy was different, he had always been.
Often overlooked for the way his eyes lit up and for his schemes not being hurting enough. It was only because he couldn't help but foster that light, the light he tried so hard to hide but now it ebbed uncontrollably from within him. Cause you were the source to that sensation of warmth, the eternal flame keeping him going.
And so the crew missed it, waiting for it like a myth ever since you were lost. Ever since you had been taken away, cause his room was never lit up night, the ship rocked with a silence that it soon got unnerving and desolate and depressing.
Without you on board, this place was a ghostown. And he was the ghost that haunted the deck with such determination. The smile that was painted on was a camouflage, a diversion because his lips never tilted up again. As he watched the distant island leaning up against the mast. His laugh too was lost with you.
The crew were never one for casting wishes when they spotted a shooting star or caught a starfish. But now everyone only has one wish, nodding as the other passed by if they ever held anything remotely special. Cause all they could do was try and wish you back, if it meant their Captain could light up again.

I feel like the fandom perceives Doctor Andonuts more harshly than Itoi probably intended. Maybe a little more harshly than the character deserves. I'm always seein him discussed n' portrayed as if he's The Worst Dad Ever, And A Terrible Person Besides. Which is a pretty tall order in a series jam-packed full of shitty fathers and morally bankrupt characters. Maybe I just read him differently than most folks do? I dunno. I like him. I'll go to bat for him. Kooky old scientist thoughts (for both EB and M3) below.
Dropping Jeff off at boarding school and never visiting for 10 years is brutal, don't get me wrong. In the scene's context, though, it comes off more like an absurd comedic circumstance than a condemnation. Peak EarthBound shit. And while Jeff's scarcely "written" in the game, nothing about the way he's presented actually conveys a sense of abandonment or bitterness. (I like to imagine he's got a lotta bones to pick with his dad, but I think that's mostly in the realm of headcanon.) (Also, while Andonuts being his only family would make it objectively much worse, there's nothing in EarthBound to suggest Jeff doesn't have a mom, or other family members.) Mother's not exactly subtle when it's putting a father worthy of harsh judgment on the table. Aloysius and Wess come to mind. I do reckon if the Doctor was supposed to be presented as an irredeemable monster, Itoi would've really driven the point home. Instead of smothering the guy's dialogue in funny off-kilter quips. Like the bit with the donuts, and inviting Jeff to come back in 10 more years, and tellin his friends he wets the bed (how would Andonuts even know that?? is he thinking of when Jeff was a toddler?? lmao). He's a socially blundering absent father, and he stirs troubled sentiments, for sure. But he's definitely not outright malignant.
The thing is, there's reason to believe the guy's working on it. Jeff and Andonuts (and pals) go through a lot of shit together over the course of the game. By the end, Jeff expresses that he's very eager to spend time with his dad, get to know him better, work collaboratively with him. Presumably Andonuts feels the same, having finally bonded with his son through all these world-saving hijinks. It feels like a sweet little character arc to me. A reclusive scientist learns to value something beyond his own work, and begins to make amends by welcoming Jeff back into his life. Perhaps death-defying circumstances shifted his perspective, reminding him of what's most important? Even if you assume the worst of Andonuts earlier in the game, EarthBound's ending is really uplifting and hopeful for these two.
Which really makes his appearance in Mother 3 all the more tragic. Andonuts was willing at last to actually be there for his son, and then Porky had to go and yoink him outta the timeline. The Doctor explicitly says he's only working with Porky because he's been forced to - and he isn't thrilled about it in the slightest. After the chimera lab, he tells Lucas he's been inspired to escape. That he wants to devote his work to benefiting all living things, whatever that means! He's the guy who really "defeated" Porky, presumably planning the Capsule trap in secret all along. He doesn't even belong in this time or place, but damn if he's not finding ways to do good for the new world he's found himself in. Same way he devoted himself to the fight against Giygas, before.
The fact he's been torn away from his son (possibly irreconcilably?) doesn't come up, and god I wish it did. But considering how much extraneous dialogue's been cut from the game (and this would've definitely been extraneous)? If he'd said "gosh I sure wish I could see Jeff again" it'd draw specific attention to the displaced plight of Porky's timetravelers - thus, failing to resolve it would probably feel like a loose end. I can see how that might've been outta line with the narrative's scope. I'm not sure it's fair to infer the streamlined writing implies Andonuts forgot about Jeff, or doesn't care about him. Dude was never very expressive about his personal life EarthBound, anyways. Call it a headcanon of course, but imo, it seems more likely he's keeping his sorry sentiments to himself.
I just think Dr. Andonuts is a really interesting character, with a lot of potential. EarthBound gives us this clever play on the "funny kooky genius scientist" trope, asking how a guy like that might prioritize work over family. Has this deadbeat dad begin earning back his bond with his son. It ends on such a wholesome feel-good note! Then Mother 3 brings forth all these gutwrenching implications. The thought of Jeff stranded back in 199X (feeling confused, abandoned, possibly even betrayed??) breaks my fuckin' heart!! Andonuts being coerced to use his genius for evil, all the while plotting Porky's eternal imprisonment? A guy who directly contributed to saving the world from Giygas gets dropped into a post-apocalyptic Earth, finding out he'd only been delaying the "inevitable"? That humans would destroy themselves, possibly thanks to the technological advancements of people like him! Realizing his efforts to reconnect with Jeff might've been all in vain, that he may never make it home again! Vowing to do good for this world anyways?? Agh. And he's presented as just a quirky unflappable oddball old fart the whole time! To call him a good person would be dubious as hell, but damn if he's not fascinating.

There's something about earthbound I've been wondering about and i think maybe you can weigh in as the local expert. I keep seeing fans interpret jeff as British but to me that's not fully right because winters is this super cold snow country "up north" as the game says. So i always imagined him as something norse, y'know Swedish or Norwegian or Finnish maybe (heck even russian could be fun). But it's just a vibe on my end while the way Fans call him British feels like there's some canonical proof i missed somewhere? Sooo do you know if there's any big proof that jeff would be British or is it just a fanon agreement thing?
Howdy! Well, the British allegations are not unfounded. EarthBound is somewhat like Pokémon in which different areas are clearly based on real world areas based on their positioning, parallels to real world landmarks, local food, and so forth. Eagleland is the U.S., Scaraba is Egypt, and Winters is no exception!
Our first little bit of proof can be found in the Japanese manual, where it contains a rough world map. Here it is (this time, a different version to the one previously posted!) for reference and a zoomed in version including Winters in as much detail as I can provide with what I've got. I had to stitch this from a double page scan, so please forgive some artifacting issues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Id: A scan from the Japanese Mother 2 manual, showcasing a planet much resembling our own in real life but with different regions and towns marked. The zoomed in portion reads "Foggyland" in big text with "Winters" and "Stonehenge" written in a smaller font below, descending vertically in that order.]
There appears to be a little island in the general area of Winters and Stonehenge, just like the U.K. in real life!
But here's the question: is Winters there? I know this map is a little unclear with its huge text, but hang in there. Even though Winters looks like it might be on that rightmost landmass, take a look at the full map of Winters (which I am only linking and not embedding because it is very big), and you have Winters and Stonehenge in the same landmass; just cross the Lake Tess on Tessie!
For reference, the American manual confirms it's a lake, so either they're both on the landmass, or both on the island.
Tumblr media
[Id: A scan from the American EarthBound manual. It is a plain text paragraph reading "The South Shore. If you manage to catch a ride with Tessie to the South Shore of Lake Tess, you'll find more woods and some animals that you've already met like the Goat. Follow the path southward, defending yourself as you go. A short hike will bring your to a fascinating artifact and another amazing challenge."]
So, here's where we get to real world parallels. Lake Tess and Tessie are clearly analogues to Loch Ness and Nessie (located in northern Scotland just above England), and Stonehenge literally shares its name with its real world counterpart located in southern England. So, if we are to match these locations, then Winters would logically be on the island, meaning that Jeff would be from the EB equivalent of the United Kingdom, which encompasses England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. He could really be from any of these! Therefore, your options here would be British, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish, but it seems like British is the most common interpretation.
Hope that helped!
