You'll never know if I'm being serious or silly about Withers. Gotta keep some things a secret.

without a doubt favourite part of bg3 is withers’ temple where every single book goes “you’re travelling with a vampire and a sharran and withers is jergal and also 50/50 you’re a bhaalspawn”

Jergal, the scribe of the dead, the archivist—this three fates motherfucker who refuses to elaborate on personal questions but waxes philosophical about your adventure, protects you, ensures your success, brings you back into the fray, puts you back on your feet, helps you mold yourself into whatever you want to be, this strange reverse-psychopomp—is the only god who did not reject Astarion.
Astarion, a finicky undead who went to law school once upon a time who is never seen at camp without a book in his hands. Astarion who passes more perception and insight checks than anyone else in my games. Astarion with his mediocre Charisma stat but higher than average Intelligence stat. Astarion who ONE HUNDRED PERCENT probably put together who Old Man Withers was but just shrugged like "I got other shit going on and I'm not about to kick a skeleton out of the closet."
I want Old Man Withers as Astarion's Grampa Figure. Astarion CALLING Withers an elvish equivalent of "Gramps". (U'osi/U'osu?? That's so cute wtf)

gale & withers: epilogue
i stumbled across this while taking another look at the epilogue files:
Tumblr media
it's withers talking to an origin gale, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the final battle against the netherbrain to save not only faerun, but his friends:
Withers: Who flickers there 'twixt the shadows? Gale, who didst surrender his very self for the salvation of Faerûn. Withers: I feared I might not find thee here - that Mystra would have already plucked thy thread from the tapestry of fate. But she may wait a while yet. Withers: Tell me, Gale, how doth thee weigh thy sacrifice, now it hath been made?
origin gale can pick from a variety of responses:
option 1:
Tumblr media
Gale: I've no regrets. I'd do it again if I had to. Withers: The Weave floweth not in this place of shadows, Gale of Waterdeep, but thine heart singeth in its place.
the weave floweth not in this place of shadows, gale of waterdeep, but thine heart singeth in its place.
gale has a genuinely good heart. it reminds me of this piece of lore again:
Tumblr media
as well as tara saying this:
Tumblr media
Tara the Tressym: If that's all, then what comes after is for you to decide, Mr Dekarios. Think well on all that's happened, and stay true to that heart of yours. It's a good one.
option 2:
Tumblr media
Gale: I feel... unburdened. I've redeemed myself at last. Withers: Redemption need not require such sacrifice, but there can be no doubt thy penitence is complete. Thou art absolved at last.
'redemption need not require such sacrifice' is such a good quote here and i like it a lot. tragic that larian's own lead writers didn't get that memo.
option 3:
Gale: I didn't want to die, but I couldn't see any other way... Withers: Circumstance did not ordain thy fate, but thine own strength. Thou wert ready for such a sacrifice, and thou art ready still.
hm. not loving this one. i suppose it's the game reinforcing the player's choice.
option 4
Tumblr media
Gale: One wizard for the whole of Faerûn seems like a fair trade to me. Withers: It is time thou learnest to value thyself truly. Thy sacrifice weighs greatly on those thou left behind, as it doth in this place.
IT IS TIME THOU LEARNEST TO VALUE THYSELF TRULY

Shot 1: The plaque of Withers' tomb: "Here lies the Guardian of Tombs." Through knowledge comes atonement." Guardian of Tombs is one of Jergal's many titles. Shot 2: [Cleric of Kelemvor]: "You feel familiar. Do I know you?" Shots 3 & 4: Withers says, "Yes, but I imagine it is not the way thee believe. Thou walk with death, child of Kelemvor. That is enough for an understanding between us."
Once he joins the camp, you get a standard cleric option (you get this too as a paladin) that requires a dice roll of 20:
Tumblr media
[Cleric] [Wisdom] Focus on the divine energy you feel from his presence.
If you succeed, the result:
Tumblr media
Narrator: "He has a divine aspect, yes. A reflection of death itself. Eternal and inescapable."
Tumblr media
[Cleric of Kelemvor] "You walk with death. Are you a Chosen of Kelemvor?"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Withers replies, "No, although Kelemvor chose well to bless one such as yourself," then refuses to answer any more questions on the subject.
Additionally, from what I hear, if you play the Dark Urge and refuse Bhaal's blessing -thus having the Lord of Murder end your whole existence- Withers SHOWS UP TO RESURRECT YOU. That on top of the mad shit he's heard a couple times talking about the Dead Three?
WITHERS WE KNOW YOU'RE JERGAL JUST ADMIT IT BRO.
If you ask why he's helping you, he says it's not by choice which makes me think back to his plaque, "Through knowledge comes atonement." I really need more lore!

More from the "Karlach's dead" epilogue. If Tav is in their feelings about Karlach dying, you can tell Withers (if Karlach was not romanced) that Karlach was like a sister to you - at which point Bone Man corrects you - that to Karlach you were her sibling and that very fact was written in her heart. He delivers that line right before the one about her soul shining so bright it pains the gods. brb crying.
anyway yeah I will absolutely consider "Tav and Wyll go to Avernus to help Karlach" to be my ending.

I was shot the statue, but at that moment the Withers decided that he should stand in front of his statue. (I didn't know about his movements, because this was the first time I found him.)

Talking to Withers about Karlach (she died in my ending). Apparently he offered her a chance to come back but Karlach refused.
Tumblr media
He basically says Karlach is waiting for Tav and possibly others to join her in dnd heaven.

So I was going through the datamined BG3 dialogue transcripts and I found this description at the top of the CAMP_Jergal.html file:
"Jergal, a god of the dead, awaits the player in camp. He is bound by the judgment of another god - Helm - to assist the players as penance for past crimes. He provides resurrection services to the players."
I think pretty much everyone already figured out that Withers=Jergal, but that bit about Helm making him assist us as penance for something was news to me!
Edit: I found the backstory in CHA_Crypt_Jergal.html file:
"After the party has slain a group of undead scholars, the judge of death--Jergal--climbs out of his sarcophagus to greet them. He has been locked inside for years by the god Helm to atone for his part in raising the Dead Three, wicked gods who are now plotting to conquer the realms. Jergal is emotionless and excessively formal, both resigned to his fate and that of others. He is here to assist the party because that is his divine oath, not out of any true desire to act. Players can attempt to goad or attack him, but to minimal effect, as he is functionally immortal. His only goal was to see their faces, so he can find them at camp later to offer further assistance."
So it's basically a "get your fucking kids in line" situation.
