Jewish Dean Winchester Fic Recs
A small collection of Dean being Jewish! As a Jew I always love seeing people create Jewish characters.
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
Fenario by ftmsteverogers - Rated E
“We did good, Dean,” Sam says. “We got him back.”
Dean huffs a hollow laugh, because yeah, that’s always what it’s about, isn’t it? Cas or Sam or Dean getting themselves lost or dead, and then taking turns dragging each other back from the brink. He shrugs, shoving his hands into his pockets.
“We got him back, yeah,” he says. Sam nods, watching him. “So now what?”
May His Memory Be a Blessing by things_renew_themselves - Rated T
Series: 4 works
“God took him from me. He hurt him, and kept hurting him for years, and then He killed him, because He hated how he cared, because He wanted me to be alone. We could have had everything. I would have done anything for him, I would’ve given him anything, everything, but He killed him…”
Dean and Sam visit a synagogue for a case. Dean ponders his faith, in Judaism and in Cas. He grieves with a rabbi.
 Picture This by masquerade97 - Rated T
Dean isn't a dog person. But if Sam needs someone to watch his dog for a week, of course he's going to agree. If he happens to meet someone interesting while he's out with the dog, well, that's just icing on the cake.

oh oh oh oh oh i need your spn fic recs please???
i'd love to help out but i really don't read much spn fic (i've never managed to get beyond season 3 because my thematic sweet spot is the really, really early seasons Two Clueless Randos Wandering The Earth vibes and i've had a hard time staying past that?) so i can't really give you too many recs especially for jewpernatural and sobrenatural stuff as a whole, for which it's mainly been stuff i've seen and followed on tumblr. (there is a LOT in both those tags)
that being said:
neatly labelled leftovers - 3k explicit mary winchester/jody mills
this has everything i like in feeling like a really, really good rendition of the kind of modern american realist short story genre (without uh heading straight into mfa territory) while also being dysfunctional middle aged women and mess and domestic dramedy. good stuff.
shatter prisms by antistar_e (kaikamahine) / 3.8 k teen
this is such a fun and then sharp and gutting kind of exploration of an alternate universe from episode 1 i need so much more of. tw for some sketchy anti asian stuff from dean though if i remember right (sigh. the nature of supernatural is just that. yeah. that feels cohesive with canon.) but gd do i LOVE the jess voice like the jess voice is great and i need more of it
wayfinding - rageprufrock, 28k, mature (and only one chapter up but it's a great chapter)
idk what the current exact consensus on genderbent fics is but my personal feeling is they are great if they push past biological essentialism (usually through the veil of porn) into genuine explorations of the construction of gender and lads! that is what this is. rageprufrock's writing is particularly nuanced and rich when it comes to fleshing out a scene and that's in full force here with this angry, loving story about deanna winchester and her web of familial relationships that makes me wish so so much that this was what the uh. canon. was
(and uh all rageprufrock's stuff. it's alll great)

Concept: supernatural except the only thing that’s changed is that Dean’s middle name is Issac and J*hn’s middle name is Abraham. That’ll be all, goodnight.

I saw this a while ago in Duolingo’s Yiddish course and wondered if Duolingo was also expecting something to happen on November 5th. [Image description: in Yiddish: Is today the fifth of November? Below, the app confirmed this translation is correct].

i have a Very Jewish Take on how Dean and Cas’s love for each other actually for real invented free will and this will maybe interest like 3 people but here we go:
so, at my seminary, i took this really incredible class called Striving for the Divine where we talked about Human-Divine relationship through a deep analysis of the first few chapters of Genesis, and a lot of what we worked on in the class was coming to thorough, communal understandings of certain key terms
we spent a lot of time trying to define the hebrew word for good; “טוב” , and the conclusion we came to is that ‘Good’, in the context of Creation, was simply anything that is exactly as envisioned by the Creator. ‘Good’ is the result being an exact match of the plan, so “רע”, ‘Bad’ , without any moral dimension necessarily tacked on, is when it isn’t - the gap between the vision and the object, the space between idea and reality - that is ‘Bad’. if you’ve ever tried to make any kind of art you know what i mean.
of course, that space is also where possibility exists, where collaboration can happen, where the unexpected or unknown can emerge, where freedom is found
the first time ‘Bad’ is even mentioned in the text is in reference to the Tree of Knowledge, and even then it is only the potential of it
its not until the Fruit is eaten, and shared, that that space even exists
now, supernatural has this angry, xtian-raised white man idea of the Divine as an absent father or controlling yet lazy creator that neither I, nor I think Judaism as a whole, subscribes to BUT
THAT BEING SAID, //canonically//, Cas’s love for Dean is the ONE thing that didn’t match Chuck’s plan, Cas’s choice to love this broken, self-hating, deeply loving, embodiment of humanity, choosing Dean over all the Hosts of Heaven, is the one thing in the whole multi-verse that was not perfectly in line with what was envisioned by the creator!! their love is the gap between the vision and the object!!! the space between idea and reality!!
they made space for freedom by choosing each other!!! they are the love that discovered “sin’”!!!! both of them are the snake and the fruit and Chava all in one!!!! i feel //insane///

an excerpt from the dean-centric fic I'm working on wherein Mary was jewish and her name was Miriam (Mary for short):
"I've started keeping kosher," Sam says with a little shrug, "makes things kinda difficult sometimes but it -- feels right. "
Dean hums in answer and swallows down the bile of jealousy that's rising in his throat. Why should he be jealous anyway? So Sam is reconnecting with Mum's religion or whatever, good for him. See if Dean cares.
"Do you go to service too, then? Talk to the rabbi?" he finally manages, and it comes out almost conversational, with only the slightest hint of bitterness, only a little bit sarcastic. He counts it as a win.
"I do," Sam says, "or I did. I -- I don't know if it's possible to keep up with it on the road but --" He breaks off and gives Dean a little look that clearly says stop talking, dude.
Dean pretends not to notice. "And your girl?" he asks instead, "she go too? Kosher and that shit?"
"Yeah," Sam says, quietly after a moment, "she is -- was -- we met at the Jewish Students' Association. She introduced me to her family at -- after service one weekend."
"Her whole family?" Dean says, surprised, and then, because he's an asshole, sarcastically, "don't know why I'm surprised that she's jewish, what with a nice hebrew name like 'Jessica'."
"More jewish than 'Dean', asshole." Sam says coldly and, yeah, Dean deserves that. He knows he's being a dick; hell, Jessica hasn't even been dead two weeks yet, and he's already -- well.
They're quiet for several long heartbeats. Then:
"Anyway, she wasn't 'Jess' at shul" - Sam says the word softly, like it's halfway between familiar and unknown; like a word that's learnt, rather than come by naturally; unlike Dean and the yiddish that he sprinkles, sometimes liberally, through his sentences; to him, Yiddish is home and safety, it's Mum's s cooking and the peeling linoleum of the kitchen floor and the curtains with the faded sunflower print; he doesn't know what it is to Sam, other than a set of rules to follow; Sam cares about keeping kosher, lighting the candles, saying the blessings, going to shul; and Dean figures he must've got that from, well, Jess.
Sam stops talking.
Dean waits.
Sam doesn't appear to want to finish the thought but Dean's not gonna let him stop.
"Yeah?" he says. "What name?"
Sam hesitates, takes a breath, hesitates again. Then finally:
"Miriam. Her name was Miriam."
And Dean wants to die.

kaddish.
character study. (light) midam. 2.2k.
Adam is in first grade when his mother signs him up for Hebrew school.
It doesn’t go over well – he’s a child and all he wants to do with his free time is play outside with his friends and watch TV – but Kate is insistent. Her grandfather Eliezer came to this country and tossed the guttural, gravelly consonants of ‘Milechmann’ into the Hudson River under the shadow of Lady Liberty herself, and so Kate is determined to see Adam through to his bar mitzvah, even if she has to drag him kicking and screaming.

I feel like the supernatural writers really stumbled onto something great when they had Dean nickname Castiel by removing the “iel” from his name. The reason why Angel names in the Bible typically end in “iel” is because in hebrew “el/Elohim” is one of the many names for god, and using hebrew grammer adding the suffix “iel” means “of god/belonging to god” so their names ending that way indicate that they are devoted to god.
Throughout supernatural we watch Cas transform from Castiel, an Angel following god’s plan, to Cas, who defies god and puts his faith in the Winchesters.
The nickname is more than just a nickname - it is a declaration of Cas’s autonomy from heaven’s plan and his free will

Dean always makes Sam sing Ma Nishtana every Passover, and he does it with a sense of duty and some annoyance. Dean is disappointed when they discover Adam because he doesn’t get to mess with Sam about it anymore- he loved that part of the holiday. They’re all delighted when Jack becomes part of the family because he’s such a quick learner and charmingly proud to show off his new Hebrew skills.

look i do love the readings of the winchesters as jewish i love jewpernatural it’s my favorite thing but also i can’t get around the fact i feel like they are written to be the most intensely wasp ish platonic ordeal of White American Man ever in a way i cannot retroactively jew them as i would love to. but also their story is so jewish. its just like, the show is actively running from how jewish it is. its in galut from understanding how jewish a story about two children forced by fire from their home who are the wanderers of the earth dealing with the horrors of the world and living in a universe of profoundly malovelent forces IS. they are part of a subculture they are not part of it at all they keep trying to put down roots no small town in america will ever really be theirs but the narrative is like nope man. truthfully i’ve always considered supernatural to be a very christian show, but when thinking about how kripke’s jewishness manifests most in the show, my mind immediately goes to the idea of wandering in the diaspora.
sam and dean are in exile from their home(land), unable to ever return but constantly yearning to. the memory of home beats in their hearts and the loss of it shapes their lives and very persons. the show’s very first monster, the woman in white, laments that she “can never go home”. dean swore he would never return to lawrence. when he does return to the family home, it’s changed from what he remembered and there are new people living there, it hasn’t remained stagnant.
john also instills in sam and dean a strong sense of loyalty and duty to the family (their lineage/heritage). they must carry mary’s memory with them every day or else she has died for no reason. they must carry on the family traditions or else the dead’s memory will fade and you will be lost.
this take on jewishness is a very secular, trauma-focused, almost jewish-american gothic, but it’s interesting to consider.
