About the talk
In this Sunday Story, we explore the photographs of Allen Ginsberg and the young writers and rebels that would define the Beat Generation. Sukkah Studio
Tumblr media
On October 5, the first full day of Sukkot in 2017, the roving Rhinoceros Project visited the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco as the first day of the Sukkah Studio project. Sukkot is a holiday that is usually summarized as a harvest festival. It’s celebrated in memory of the forty years of wandering in the desert after the Jews fled Egypt, and of the temporary structures that farmers would build to live in during the harvest.
However, as our visit followed the hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and Katia, as well as the earthquakes in Mexico and the South Pacific (with the #NorCalFires just about to start, although we didn’t know it yet) we found ourselves reflecting on how the festival is also a memory of what it means to be lost, displaced, or homeless. As a wandering project, we’ve been welcomed into many spaces, and we’ve learned the importance of creating a welcoming space for others. Welcoming spaces, where people can come together and share stories, are becoming more and more meaningful in a time of displacement and demonization of immigrants, Muslims, and those who are considered “Other.” Sukkot is a joyful holiday, where people come together, and we hope that this joy reverberates throughout this project and the people and places we visit as we continue.
Our time at the museum also coincided with Fleet Week in San Francisco, so throughout the day we were startled by the roar of the Blue Angels and they rocketed by overhead.
Tumblr media
As soon as the day began, participants crowded ‘round the rhino to sew. It was interesting to note, the woman in the red shirt above has been one of the very few participants to see rhinoceri in their natural habitat. She seemed to view them as perfectly natural, but mundane animals, and seemed amused at our view of them as magical creatures. (And to us, they still are, even after we met them this summer!)

The Sukkah from above.
Several families remarked that, due to living in small San Francisco apartments, they were unable to build their own Sukkahs, and how wonderful it was then to celebrate the holiday at the museum.
This particular Sukkah was built from blue pine, donated in part to the museum by Sapphire Pine. Blue pine gets its colors from a fungus introduced to the trees by mountain beetles. A combination of years of California drought and the damage from beetles causes the tree to die. The Sukkah Studio is just one of the ways the wood from blue pine trees can be given a new life.

At the end of the day, the roar of the Blue Angels had quieted down, and a glowing light descended over the Sukkah.

Exquisite exhibition of history of Jewish attire at @jewseum Had the please of instigating artists field trip w @queerlycomplex @vibrata @truptimannina @shop_lafortuna What a great way to spend a rainy day. Thorough, joyous, educational, beautiful, compassionate and well designed exhibition... including a fun textile lab where we got to weave, dress, embroider. This was the last day. I hope you got to see see it. #veiledmeanings “Veiled Meanings: Fashioning Jewish Dress, from the Collection of @israel_museum will focus on how clothes balance the personal with the social, how dress traditions distinguish different Jewish communities according to their respective local dress codes, and how they portray Jewish and secular affiliations within larger societal and global contexts. Historical, geographic, social, and symbolic interpretations will be included within the context of four thematic sections: Exposing the Unseen; Through the Veil; Clothing that Remembers; and Interweaving Cultures. This touring version of The Israel Museum’s original exhibition Dress Codes was developed for The Contemporary Jewish Museum and @thejewishmuseum in New York, which are the only two venues to exhibit Veiled Meanings in the United States to date.” (at Contemporary Jewish Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsUT6L2hzE1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=dxxrwr9t0gb0
