Was John Philip Shenale a part of something like the Wrecking Crew? If he was, he probably had a couple of buddies he worked with. Look, I am not sure on whether or not he and Bill Wray are close, though I assume they sort of had a camaderie, since they both had a similar type of a career. Still, Mr. Wray tried to do his own solo material more often than Mr. Shenale. Therefore, we can find him playing on Mr. Wray's Seize The Moment, which could be seen as a formidable slice of the 80's rock. This is also a bad thing, because everything seems so shiny you have a hunch the entire things was made out of rejected parts from other musicians during the period. Sure, Mr. Wray knows what he's doing, yet he should be willing to bend the rule more to his whim.

8th February 1928 saw John Logie Baird demonstrate his invention, the television, transmitting from London to New York.

A man and a woman sat before an electric eye in a London laboratory tonight and a group of persons in a darkened cellar in this village outside New York watched them turn their heads and move from side to side.

The images were crude, imperfect, broken, but they were images none the less. Man’s vision had panned the ocean; transatlantic television was a demonstrated reality, and one more great dream of science was on the way to realisation.

The demonstration was made by the Baird Television Development Companyof London, using short-wave radio sets for transmission of the “vision sound” and the televisor invented by John L.Baird – who has also invented an instrument for seeing in the dark – for turning this sound back into vision after its ocean hop.

The transformed vision of the man and woman in the London laboratory came through the ether in the form of a bumblebee’s hum, a musical buzz or irregular cadence representing in sound the lights and shadows of their faces – all that was transmitted in the test.

When the televisor, a black box compact enough to be carried around in a taxi, had done its work with this rhythmic rumble from across the sea the visions gradually built themselves up of tiny oblongs of light suspended in a whirling rectangle of brilliance in the machine’s gaping mouth.

The vision of the woman appeared broken and scattered, but it was still plain that she was a woman and that she was showing first the full face and then the profile.

The demonstration was attended on this end by Captain O.G.Hutchinson, managing director of the Baird Company, who came to this country especially for the purpose; Benjamin Clapp, who has been working on secret tests of the televisor; R.M. Hart, owner of short wave radio station 2CVJ, who has done the receiving of the vision sound; and an Associated Press reporter.

The vision sound was sent across the ocean by short wave radio station 2KZ, of only two kilowatts power.

In the following years he also gave the first demonstration of both colour and stereoscopic television. The basis of which later would form the basis of the technique used by NASA to bring live colour TV pictures from the moon (he continued to be fascinated by colour television, and in the 30s and 40s demonstrated colour pictures that were of outstanding quality

…His success deserves to rank with Marconi’s sending of the letter “s” across the Atlantic – the first intelligible signal ever transmitted from shore to shore in the development of transoceanic radio telegraphy. As a communication Marconi’s “s” was negligible; as a milestone in the onwards sweep of radio, of epochal importance. And so it is with Baird’s first successful effort in transatlantic television. .… Whatever may be the future of television, to Baird belongs the success of having been a leader in its early development.

I read books! Sometimes, I remember to talk about books!

Here’s a roundup of some of my favorite things I read in 2023. I'll put half of this under a cut to save the timeline.

Middle Grade:

When Life Gives You Mangos by Kereen Getten - This is a sweet story about friendship, grief, and family set in a close knit community in Jamaica following a young girl who can't remember anything that happened the previous summer. I don't read middle grade often so I wasn't expecting to be on the edge of my seat during this book, but I sure was!

Garlic & the Vampire by Bree Paulson - An anthropomorphic village of vegetables - what more could you ask for? When the village learns a vampire moved into a nearby castle, they decide Garlic has to be the one to face him. A cute, wholesome graphic novel - and the sequel Garlic & the Witch was also lovely!

Nonfiction:

A Mind Spread Out on the Ground by Alicia Elliott - This is a collection of essays by an Indegenous author covering a wide range of topics including race, gentrification, parenthood, and mental illness. I annotated the shit out of this book... which is always a sign of a well loved read in my house.

Bad Blood by John Carreyrou - A fascinating account by the journalist from the Wall Street Journal who broke open the case against Theranos and Elizabeth Holmes. The entire story is absolutely bananas and made for a wild read.

Excellent on Audio:

How to Be Perfect by Michael Shur - If you watched and enjoyed The Good Place, this audiobook should be required listening. Pretty much everyone from the cast pops in at random times to narrate something. It was also just a great, thought-provoking book. I actually read this for a work book club and it prompted me to finally finish The Good Place. Most successful book club pick ever.

Finding Me by Viola Davis - She won a Grammy for the narration of this book (and earning her rightful place as an EGOT) and it was well deserved. I'm not usually one for celebrity memoirs, but Viola's life was incredibly interesting and her narration was amazing.

Thriller/Horror:

The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas - This is a Mexican, historical, gothic horror novel set after the Mexican War of Independence. It features a secluded, potentially haunted hacienda and a priest who might actually be a witch. Atmospheric vibes are peak here. Highly recommend listening to the spotify playlist the author made while you read!

No One is Watching by Alyssa Cole - The official blurb says "the gentrification of a Brooklyn neighborhood takes on a sinister new meaning" and that about sums it up. It also compares it to Get Out and that's a pretty good comp, in my opinion.

Poetry:

Artemis Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer - I'm not gonna lie, this poetry collection and the one in the series before it (Aphrodite Made Me Do It) were absolutely cover buys. The cover art is stunning! but luckily the inside is good too.

If My Body Could Speak by Blythe Baird - This collection deals a lot with the feminine experience, how we relate to our bodies and its traumas. Definitely check the trigger warnings for this collection first before picking it up.

Romance:

Take a Hint, Dani Brown by Talia Hibbert - I'm not one to read a ton of romance books but I did enjoy a couple this year. This one was definitely the most explicit but also wholesome and something has to be said for being able to do both. Fun tropes include: fake dating & grumpy/sunshine.

Glitterland by Alexis Hall - While this is still a romance book at its core, it also deals heavily with depression. Fun tip with this book: definitely get the re-released edition with this cover because it has author annotation notes! It was very fun to read those at the end of every chapter.

Short & Quick Reads:

The Appendix by Liam Konemann - This is a very small little pocket book, part of the 404's Inklings collection. In it, Liam is reacting to transphobia he encounters through various media, but also discussing how he navigates being a gay trans man in today's culture.

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh - I think I would best describe this as a queer forest fairytale. I'm a sucker for any story that can transport me to a mythical forest and while this one clocks in at a little under 115 pages, it packed a good plant magic punch.

Misc Books I Couldn't Find a Category For:

Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat - I never thought I would read this series, but I stumbled into the first one and then devoured the entire series in the span of 2 days. While I know the core of what people love about this is the love story... the political intrigue happening absolutely gripped me!

Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore - Another trope/plot device I love is time travel... or whatever weird timey wimey mess you would consider this: Oona faints after she's about to turn nineteen and awakens 32 years in the future in her 51 year old body. She learns that after each year completes, she'll leap to another age at random. It's as messy and complicated as it sounds but never a dull moment.

The series follows four people newly recruited by The Library: Colonel Eve Baird (Rebecca Romijn), of the NATO Anti-Terrorist Unit, destined to be the new Guardian; Ezekiel Jones (John Harlan Kim), a consummate thief who can hack an NSA computer as easily as he can steal a Fabergé egg; Cassandra Cillian (Lindy Booth), a brilliant scientist and mathematician who possesses a trace of magic; and Jacob Stone (Christian Kane), polymath, linguist, expert in architecture, art, art history, archaeology and world cultures of the past and present, including Native American cultures, and other fields too numerous to mention, including bar fighting. The latter three received invitations from the Library at the same time as the current Librarian, Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle), but for various reasons didn't show up for their interviews.

In a break with the concept established in the films that there can be only one Librarian at a time, the first episodes reveal that the state of the world is so dire that it needs a team of Librarians, with Baird serving as Guardian of all four. With the help of Jenkins/Galahad (John Larroquette), immortal manager of the Library’s Annex, they solve impossible mysteries, rewrite and fix key moments in history, recover powerful magical artifacts, fight against supernatural threats, and learn important things about themselves and each other. In the first season, they battle the forces of the Serpent Brotherhood, led by the mysterious immortal Dulaque (Matt Frewer). Carsen, who spends the first season searching for the main Library (removed from time and space at the beginning of the series) appears in some episodes.

The second season offers up a pair of new villains, both from fiction: Prospero (Richard Cox), from Shakespeare's The Tempest, and Moriarty (David S. Lee), Sherlock Holmes' chief nemesis. The former is positioned as the greater evil, attempting to use magic to destroy the world in order to remake it more to his liking. Moriarty is more of a gray villain—generally aligned with Prospero but willing to side with the Librarians when it suits his own interests.

The third season introduces a new adversary, Apep, the Egyptian God of Chaos. Defeated centuries before by the first Librarian, Judson (Bob Newhart), and his Guardian, Charlene (Jane Curtin), he is resurrected when his sarcophagus is opened and embarks on a mission to release pure evil into the world, possessing many different people along the way. While they are trying to stop Apep, the Librarians' actions are closely monitored by General Cynthia Rockwell (Vanessa Williams) from a new secret government agency, called DOSA (Department of Statistical Anomalies).

The fourth season does away with season-long story arcs in favor of stand-alone episodes, with three ongoing issues: Before the vernal equinox, Flynn and Eve must undertake a ceremony that will bind them to each other and to the Library, as Charlene and Judson did before them. They will become immortal and bind the Library to Earth, giving it a human connection and a human heart rather than the cold, implacable and dangerously self-centered attitude that would characterize it without that bond. (We learn in season three that the Library is a conscious entity.) The return of Nicole Noone, Flynn's first Guardian, believed dead and now immortal, raises many questions. And conflict arises between the Librarians over former Librarian Darrington Dare's assertion that there can only be one Librarian at a time, or the result will be disastrous. These three stories are not resolved until the last episode.

He doesn't exactly have that much lore outside of his short story rip

I'll throw in a couple of random facts that are not super specified in the animation without too many spoilers.

He was a scottish ODST sergeant, weirdly tall and too large for his branch (ODST are just common human marines, a bit better than the regular UNSC marines but they aren't cyborgs like spartans). For instance, the average sangheili (one of the sapient alien species) should be almost 8 ft (around 2,50 m) tall, the tallest one we know about being almost 12 ft (3,54 m) tall. They usually tower over spartans (the average spartan is 7 ft tall)...aaand this is Baird next to a sangheili elite.

So yes this random guy just happened to be taller than the average super cyborg space soldier and it's canon. He is even taller than John.

Despite the good medical records of both him and the rest of his family he is one of the very rare cases of humans in the 2500's to get cancer.

Even if not mentioned in the animation, he completely broke every single bone in his hand while bitch slapping that elite (sangheili are VERY strong. They can tear a human a part in seconds and they aren't easy to injure without weapons), but while doing so he also broke 2 of his jaws and got him very pissed so that was worth it I guess

His comfort memory is just him making snow angels as a kid, back when he lived in Edinburgh (not many humans live/are born on Earth in the Halo universe).

His nickname is simply "Mick". Not even Mike. Not even Sarge. Mick.

In 2018, Rebecca Varney could have used Josh Hawley’s help.

Hawley, currently a U.S. senator, was Missouri’s attorney general at the time. Among the key responsibilities of that office is to enforce the state’s Sunshine Law, which governs public access to records and meetings.

Varney, who lives in Edgar Springs, was being harassed by city officials in that south-central Missouri town as she sought to use the Sunshine Law to figure out what was going on in City Hall. Things got so bad that city attorney Brandi Baird banned Varney from the public building, even when there were public meetings going on there.

Around the same time, Hawley, a Republican, had his own Sunshine Law problems. Despite being elected in large part because of the “Lock Her Up” crowd — Republicans who were angry over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server — Hawley had been engaged in similar activity. In 2017, Hawley’s campaign consultants, using private email to communicate with public employees, set up a raid on a massage parlor to portray Hawley as tough on human trafficking.

By 2019, both Varney and Hawley were wrapped up in lawsuits. Varney, since she didn’t get any help from the state, hired attorney David Roland of the Freedom Center of Missouri to make sure she had access to City Hall. Hawley was sued by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee for hiding records the committee had sought in a Sunshine Law request.

Last week, both of the lawsuits came to their inevitable conclusions. Hawley’s got the most attention, of course. He’s a sitting U.S. senator and the person who defended him in the lawsuit, current Attorney General Eric Schmitt, was just elected as Missouri’s second U.S. senator.

The two senators lost the lawsuit badly. Cole County Circuit Court Judge Jon Beetem, a fellow Republican, chided Hawley, and by inference Schmitt, for the “insincerity” of the arguments in the lawsuit. Beetem found that Hawley “deliberately withheld these documents without any plausible, lawful rationale for doing so.” He fined the attorney general’s office $12,000, the maximum possible, and ordered that it pay attorneys fees, which will be significantly higher than the fine.

It’s a stunning decision that exposes the worst kind of abuse of the public trust by a politician — hiding public records that might have had an impact on his election. “It’s cheating,” says attorney Mark Pedroli, who won the lawsuit along with the Elias Law Group.

But it’s more than that. It’s an indictment of how broken the Sunshine Law is in Missouri, primarily because the attorney general’s office has been using its power to evade the law rather than enforce it.

You can’t truly appreciate the impact of Hawley’s abuse of the law without understanding its effect on people like Varney. In Varney’s case, Phelps County Circuit Court Judge John Beger fined the city of Edgar Springs $600 and secured Varney’s access to City Hall to see and inspect public records.

“Public access to public records is not a new or novel policy for this state,” Beger wrote.

But it is often treated that way by state and county officials, as well as cities. Too many public officials believe they can get away with violating the Sunshine Law because there has not been a Missouri attorney general who would take the law seriously and bring lawsuits against government bodies on behalf of citizens. Instead, the work has been left to private attorneys.

Those attorneys include Pedroli and Roland. Also, Elad Gross, Jean Maneke, Bernie Rhodes and Joe Martineau (who represents the Post-Dispatch). These attorneys have won Sunshine Law actions in the past few years that reinforce Beger’s obvious statement. Each of those lawsuits could have been brought by the attorney general or avoided altogether if the office worked harder to enforce the law.

In that vacuum, cities and counties regularly violate the Sunshine Law with impunity.

That means citizens are often left on their own. They know nothing about the Sunshine Law until the bulldozers are in the backyard. That’s what happened to Jason Maki, who took on the city of Parkville because he couldn’t get help from Schmitt’s office after filing Sunshine Law requests that were ignored. Maki was seeking information about a proposed development near his house.

Last year, he won a $195,000 settlement from the small city northwest of Kansas City.

“It became obvious that I had to take things in my own hands,” Maki told me last year.

It is telling that Hawley, the former attorney general, was found to have deliberately withheld public records the same week Varney won her battle for records with Edgar Springs.

Such is the state of play for public accountability in Missouri. The office that is supposed to enforce the Sunshine Law is leaving citizens to go to court themselves when they get locked out of City Hall.

Asked what he did for a living, the youth said he had been farming, and was now take of kennels until he rented his house.

"His circumstances are very unfortunate," said Crown Counsel George Gardhouse, "his father is overseas and his mother is not living with him. He doesn't know where she is. He has been left to his own devices. He has no record." "On the basis of your youth and record, I'm putting you on suspended sentence," said Magistrate Woodliffe.

Convicted of receiving gasoline in the same case, Pte. William Ryan, 19, was fined $25 and cost or 30 days.

James Butler, assistant divisional registrar, told Magistrate Browne in A Court, accused was notified at a Sullivan St. address on Mach 2 to report for medical examination. "He did report and was placed in a low category. On June 11 another letter was sent to the Sullivan St. address, ordering him to appear for re-examination. This was returned. TRIED TO STEAL TIRE --- "B" Police Court at the City Hall, Magistrate Hanrahan Sixty days in jail was the sentence imposed on Dan Toomey for attempted theft of tires, by Magistrate Hanrahan in "B" police court today.

P.C. C. Holmes said he arrested accused and found on him jewelry and a knife taken from the Martin home Martin identified a clock and several other articles. He said $9 was also stolen. Accused was remanded for sentence until Friday. He admitted a penitentiary record.

Ignace Chylinski was convicted of attempted theft of a car belonging to Sidney Winters and remanded for sentence until Friday. He was caught by Winters.

Clarence Horne pleaded guilty of shopbreaking and Camille Dinwoodie, not guilty.

Detective-Sergt. Micah Banks said that on Aug. 10 Horne and a woman hired a taxi and went to the vicinity of Yonge and Edward Sts. Horne got out and the woman drove around then returned to the neighborhood of Sol. Geens fur store, Yonge St. Some six neckpieces, valued at $500 were placed in the cab and taken to a Jarvis St. hotel. There a fur was dropped and found by police. Search of Horne's room revealed the furs. Horne was remanded until Thursday for sentence and the charge against Mr. Dinwoodie was withdrawn.

He had a high school education, apparently gained through courses taken in prison, and had a long criminal record including four previous terms served in the penitentiary, equalling almost eleven years. October 4th 1821 saw the death of John Rennie, the famous engineer who constructed the Crinan Canal.

Rennie is always overshadowed by Thomas Telford when it comes to our great civil engineers but Rennie was very much respected and his work on canals, aqueducts, bridges and dockyards mark him as one of the greatest engineers of his age.

John Rennie was born June 7, 1761 at East Linton, sometimes called “the Elder,” to distinguish him from his engineer son John junior, he designed canals from the 1790s onwards during the golden age of canal building Rennie made his initial mark with his aqueducts, which carried canals across rivers or other canals, structures I myself love, two I have been over many times carry the Union Canal, are over The Water of Leith in Edinburgh, and the River Avon near Linlithgow, although I digress as these were by another engineer, Hugh Baird.

After making a name for himself in Scotland London came calling and aged 29 he moved down there and set up his own engineering business in 1791, his biggest project being the original Waterloo Bridge, which was demolished between the wars in the 1930's after structural damage was discovered. One of John Rennie's last projects was the construction of the Custom House Docks in Dublin, which were completed in 1821.

Some of Rennie's works in Scotland, as seen in the pictures include, Kelso Bridge, pics one and two, Musselburgh Bridge, Ken Bridge, near New Galloway, and the aforementioned Crinan Canal in Argyll and Bute.
