Two Years Later, Rabid Plot Bunny Still Gnaws Johnlocker’s Brain (Brain has grown smaller as a result)

Haven’t you learned your lesson yet? Her sense-demons keep whispering.

No, she responds, staring at the laptop screen with bloodshot eyes.

I know I have mentioned this before, but I can’t find the post ofc bc this is Tumblr. But anyway I’m still thinking about it and I still have a very STUPID urge to write a Johnlock disco AU. It would just be so super involved and I’m so busy that I’m writing at a snail’s pace as it is. But imagine this perfection:

A 70′s setting, obviously. Competitive dancing circuit. I’ve done some research on disco competitions from the era and they don’t work this way so I’d just have to utilize wild artistic license, but--

The UK’s hottest dancers put their egos aside just long enough to pair off for a doubles-only competition. The competition will take place through a number of elimination rounds, spaced out over several weeks. It’s all happening at a regular club, so there are tv cameras and stuff but any Joe Schmoe can go and watch in person on the sidelines if they wish.

But wait, you ask--where’s John? Well, he’s no one of course. Nothing ever happens to him. So he’s just that Joe Schmoe on the sidelines, only there to cheer on his mate Greg (and watch Greg’s awkward crush on Molly become more obvious and pathetic by the minute). But John’s therapist has been urging him to take up a hobby, to do something outside his comfort zone--so, reluctantly, he begins to learn to dance. In small classes, in out of the way places, where no one will ever ever see him.

Great plan. Except that when Irene Adler suffers a severe injury (sabotage?) and can’t continue in the competition, Sherlock needs to find a new partner ASAP--or be disqualified.

Mike Stamford is a judge. He should be impartial. He shouldn’t say a word. But he knows them both, and likes them both, and thinks they should meet--even if it’s highly improbable that it could lead to any actual partnered dancing. It’s not like he’d be giving Sherlock an *advantage* by pointing him toward a man who can barely be called a newcomer on the scene (who would, in point of fact, set himself on fire rather than have anyone know what he’s been up to). And if Mike’s sort of betraying a confidence of John’s, well...sometimes a person can see what would be best for their friend and knows that their friend would never take a step in that direction of their own volition, so...he *means* well, and it’s for John’s benefit. It’s a lesser of two evils sort of thing, right? John will probably forgive him. Eventually.

I mean, he thinks, it’s W. Sherlock Scott.

I mean, Sherlock channeling John Travolta? Give it a thought.

Oops. I meant--

ANYWAY--

Sherlock is pure sex on the dance floor and everyone wants him--at least until he opens his mouth. Sure his stage name is too long and barely hints at how pretentious the man is, but he’s liquid charisma when he just shuts his mouth. So if Sherlock, say, ends up wanting to school John in private so extensively that they could mirror each other in their sleep...well, then John might even thank Mike some day!

It’s not like John hasn’t been staring holes through the overly posh tosser anyway. Stamford might be a bit of an arsehole for even considering the introduction, but Mate, he’d tell you, chuckling in that cherubic way he has, I may not be able to cut a rug like some of these bastards, but there’s nothing wrong with my ruddy eyes!

I cannot promise I will ever actually be able to make this happen, or that it would unfold in this exact way if I did, but, it’s an idea that doesn’t wanna let go. *Facedesk*

The short story of love

This is a mini fanfiction of how me and my girlfriend got together. Almost all the names are changed for privacy purposes but are based on me and my friends. This fan fiction came to be after me and my girlfriend released that we had been acting like some fan fiction characters based on our own fan fiction named Da Fanfiction. I hope you all enjoy :)

Sorry for any spelling mistakes that may occur, but sadly I am a Norweegan that is not totally fluent in English as well as having a keyboard that is willing to ruin the day for me at any given moment.

Sonja had just started her new school year, and she could not say she was a happy camper. But not bothering to care right now she traced down the hallway to her favorite spot in the entire school. Entering she could already see that Anne and Stina was there, and Sonja choose to promptly sit down and wait for the rest of their friends.

Inca was the last to enter, not that this surprised Sonja as the girl had a tendency to talk to everybody she knows, but that was just a part of her charm Sonja supposed. But today something new happened. Inca had brought another person. Sonja looked at the other girl;

She had blond hair, that was so different from Sonjas dark brown hair. And while the both of them had blue eyes, they where still so different compared to Sonjas dark blue eyes, the new girls eyes looked almost like the sky. She was also taller than Sonja something Sonja was not so pleased about, how come she was doomed to be the small one??? The new girl was also paler, now that did not surprise Sonja as she knew her tan was something that made people think she was from another country. Sonja observed the girl for a few more seconds and had to admit that the girl was simply stunning, but Sonja already knew she was waaaay out of her league.

Finally focusing back at her friend she was able to catch the newcomers name, Emma, Emma was her name.

Sonja got a small smirk on her face and scooted over to where Emma was sitting on the couch;

«Well Hello there Emma, my name is Sonja and I have a question for you…. Are you willing to join this madhouse?»

Emma looked around in the room Inca had dragged her into, the room was filled a few other girls. Emma looked at Inca, she had only know the other girl for 2 days, but as she was a person from same place as her it was like that had know each other for a while.

In the room there was 3 other girls, and all of them looked as her as they entered. After being introduced by Inca she sat down on one of the two couches, as she sat dow the «leader/mom friend» scooted over to her from the floor.

Emma looked at her as she introduced herself and was then dragged down in a downwards spiral of looking at Sonjas drawings. But they all seemed nice enough, so Emma was not about run and hide.

It was a few days later, and somehow Sonja had ended up taking the bus with Emma to school, oh Sonja knew what her parents would do if they found out, but then again Sonja was not about to let them find out anyway.

Now Sonja was already getting to know Emma and had to be honest with herself. She thought that Emma was awesome. The other girl was just as fluent in sarcasm as herself and their humor seemed to blend well. And their mutual love for fan fictions was fitting as well.

They seemed to have started something of a norm as well, everyday one of them messaged the other to take the bus together, it was nice in Sonjas opinion. But to herself Sonja had to be honest, she could feel herself being more attracted to Emma than what she first thought, but she knew she would be fine as long as it did not escalate.

Oh boi how wrong she was about to be…….

It was a few weeks later and they were now nearing spooky seasons, and Sonja wanted to be swallowed hole by the ground. God dammit she hated herself. She had told herself not to fall for Emma, to forget the crush and the sweet messages they sent each other, did she listen? Noooooooooo, hence why Sonja was mentally banging her head in the table since she knew both Inca and Emma would stop her from doing so, at least Anne would let her loose half a dozen brain cells.

Well the good news was that Sonja and Emma had just starting writing a fan fiction together, or that was good for them, not the rest of their poor friends. By this point Anne was getting real tired of their talking, and Sonja could clearly see why, but then again she got so carried away when they first started.

It was a few days later when Sonja had one of the conversations she dreaded more than anything, it wasn’t because of the person. No it was because of the topic, and that happened to be about Crushes, oh how the faiths hated her. But since she was talking to Emma, while walking to school she couldn’t do much about it. Listening to Emma, she had to be honest and say she most likely paid a lot of attention to the other girl, what could she say; she tended to get a tad bit jealous at times. But the uninventable had to come, of course it had. Did she have a crush? Oh yes she had, sadly to the person she was taking to, a person she adored greatly, was she going to tell the truth? Not ecxsactly, nope, Emma had to settle for some half mystic answer for now.

Emma thought that all of the older years was interesting, and she could vibe with any of them. But at the moment that wasn’t her main priority.

No at the moment she was focusing on something else. Emma had just started writing with Sonja, and she wanted to laugh, they were geniuses, and the fan fiction they were writing? Pure fucking gold. The name of their Johnlock fan fitting was amply named Da fan fiction, the name being the curtesy of Sonja. Actually Emma had to admit that she was having a lot of fun with it, sadly for Anne at this point, the poor girl properly wanted to kill them both by this point.

On another note, Sonja was acting kind of weird, nothing new but non the less weird. The girl was simply refusing to tell her who her crush are, suspicious was it not? But then again it was her life. But then the world called back to her and her thoughts had to rest for now.

But Sonja had to be honest, she knew herself well enough that by one point she would just straight up end up with kissing Emma if this escalated any further, so the next best option was to tell some close friend and get help in how to tell Emma. Sonja might not be the brightest person, but she was bright enough to know she needed help. But as always Sonja ran into another problem, she was simply a bit to proud to ask for help from friends, dammed her Slytherin traits, the next best option would be the hell-spawn for an app, Tumblr.

Guess she was going there for help then, well at least it was better than admitting her defeat at the moment, Sonja believed that not even she would be able to survive the teasing between Inca and Anne, and once again she wanted to curse her own little black heart. Ofcourse she had to fall for another girl, a girl that most likely only thought of her as a friend. Sonja was simply put: Fucked.

After going to the hell-site asking for help, Sonja wanted to jump through the window, Emma be dammed, she had asked if could help, Sonja had to admit she was flattered, but unless Emma was willing to be her girlfriend, then there wasn’t a lot to do. Well at least she had gotten tips from others as well, from this day one it seemed like Emma was going to get a lot of compliments from her.

As all these thought swirled around in her head, another thought struck Sonja, what will their friends say, Sonja did not think they would have anything against it, but she had a sneaking suspicion that one or more of them knew. But at this point Sonja did not have time to dwell on it, she had a person to woo.

Emma noticed how Sonja had started to give her more compliments, nothing wrong with that. But Emma was confused. Was she flirting? Emma could not be certain as Sonja had a tendency to do what she would call platonic flirting, as in Sonja flirted with all their friends in some way or another. So yes Emma could not be certain

It had gone another few weeks and Sonja was about to rip her hair out, god dammit, she knew she had fallen more and more for Emma, seeing the girl in the library the other day and feeling her breath catch was enough clue of that. But damn that girl was dense, it was like she wasn’t noticing the fact that Sonja was trying very hard to flirt with her without using sarcasm, well desperate times called for desperate measures did it not?

Seemed like she was going to need to tell someone. Seeing that she needed help made Sonja frown a little. Knowing that she would never live it down if she was to tell Anne she chose the safer option with telling Inca and Stina, it seemed to help however at Inca was able to calm some of her fears, and Stina offered to help her.

On that noe She was flattered though, it was nice to be complimented by the other girl, it was sweet even. But Emma thought at it as platonic because why would Sonja ever feel that way.

It went a few more days before Sonja was desperate enough to ask for more help by Stina, lucky for Sonja was Stina willing to help, the bad news was that she gave her helping hand when all their friends present, and that was including Emma, Sonja now had desperate wish to disappear from the face of the earth. Oh well, she could do that if her planned failed. Sonja looked at the mini envelope as well as card, looks like she was about to draw and write in mini his time.

After dreadfully writing even though she had class Sonja was now done, so she went on the hell-site to broadcast it, that was the good news, the bad news was that Sonja did this on a Friday, and Emma would not see it before Monday… Let the waiting game where you almost kill yourself begin.

They where just eating in their spot, now known as the «living room», Emma smiled at that. Today Stina chose to grade them with her presence and was quick to give Sonja something before sitting down to eat, how odd, but Emma was not about to ask.

A few hours later Emma was just scrolling through Tumblr when she noticed that Sonja had posted again. The teen had posted a lot about her crush lately, but didn’t want Emmas help, even if Emma asked her. But the new post however was interesting, she had apparently done something she might regret. And by that she meant putting a note in her crushes locker.

Emma kind of hoped it were her, it would be nice if it was, but she would see that in a few days then wouldn’t she?

It was Monday and Sonja was about to break down in nervous laughter. Og well, sitting with Emma, Sonja was desperately trying to find an excuse as of why she needed to go to her classroom right away instead of being with Emma in the library. Sonja knew it wasn’t a good one, but it served its purpose. It was now or never anyway.

Sonja was sitting in her classroom and damn she was on the verge to break down, and she was not even able to compose herself! But to be honest she was dreading it, Emma had not written back or sent a message and by this point was freaking out, had she done something wrong? It sure felt like it. Taking a decision the message Emma asking if she did something wrong…. Who were she kidding, no, she was spamming Emmas phone while apologizing because Sonja felt awful, had she ruined what they had? Sonja did not know.

But then it happened, Emma wandered one of her maaaany messages, and to Sonjas relic she wasn’t mad, well that was good, but Sonja could feel it on herself that Emma seemed a bit unsure or something, Well guess she had to charm the girl to her side then, it should be plausible, Sonja started plotting.

Emma watched as Sonja disappeared after coming in the door to school, she had to say that Sonja was good with excuses, like damn doing some history tasks? Emma could see right through that one, why wouldn’t she? She had known Sonja long enough to know she only did work right before it needed to be delivered, so her excuse was a blatant lie. Ha! It was laughable even!

Going down to the locker Emma had to say she hoped that she was the one to find the note in her locker. Oh she had read Sonjas posts on Tumblr, why wouldn’t she? And that was why at the moment she hoped that it was for her…. Though Emma had to be honest and say that if she did find it she would not know what to say, or do for that matter.

Her hart was beating hard as she opened the locker, and as she hoped there was a small envelope laying there innocently. Getting the thing she needed she took it and read it, she had to admit she was flattered, if she was blushing she did not know. But Emma decided it was best to give Sonja some space, never knew what could be going on.

Since Sonja was currently in her classroom, that dammed female, Emma was sitting with Inca, and while doing so she got this feeling that Inca knew. Honestly Emma wasn’t that supprised, looking at her phone she got to class. It was during lessons she could her messages getting spammed, and looking at it she saw it was Sonja, The other girl was feeling feeling guilty, that was clear as day. Now Emma could not have this now could she, so messaging her that she had not done anything wrong and making sure that Sonja could see that and that her other crushes did not matter she sat back in her chair, Emma was not sure what was going to happen next, but she still had a good feeling, even though this was somewhat of a new territory for her.

Emma let a small smile grace her lips, well how couldn’t she? Making sure the envelope side with the drawing display proudly she continued with her day.

It was later when she once again got spammed with messages from Sonja, apparently her parents chose to be asses, not that that surprised her, Sonjas parents soundly needed a reality check, well that was not her problem. Other than that they wrote to each other and Emma had to be honest, her head was a mess of feelings, Dammit why did Sonja make feel things…. It was not fair. But she was happy, she just hoped that they would be together,

Sonja had used all of yesterday trying to charm Emma, and she could feel her heart pound as they walked down from school together, Why one might wonder, well because Sonja really, really liked the other girl, and wanted to be together with her, so what had she done? She had written in her black deathly hallows book. It was Sonjas feelings for Emma written down of sorts, and she felt herself shaking thinking about it, she just hoped that for once that the faiths would be in her favor…

Emma had to be honest, she had been a little charmed by Sonja yesterday, oh well she had to give it to the young woman she tried. School went as normal enough, but Sonja continued to send sweet and caring messages trough the day.

When they finally met up to go down to the bus together Emma could feel herself blushing, but thankfully they were only speaking of Da fan fiction, it was first when they came down something interesting happened. Sonja had written something in the little black book of her, And Emma felt flattered, Sonja only let a few read what she wrote so she felt somewhat special. Then it happened, the thing that made her chest feel way to small to her heart. Sonja wanted them to be together, and Emma could only do one thing. That was agreeing. The rush of adrenalin was drugging, and the happiness she felt was immense, well guess her friends were right, she now had a girlfriend.

Thinking of friend she could only imagine hoe her and Sonjas friends would react, but Emma had a feeling it would go well.

Sonja spoke up when she saw that Emma was don reading, she was nervous, but damn she had to get her shit together. So she had to know, did Emma want to be together with her, the sarcastic person with dark humor, the person that was so different from her?

And as Sonja asked if Emma was sure she felt relief washing over her, she had a girlfriend! And Sonja knew this was important, it was a new chapter of her life after all

We presume that the Johnlocker who made the tweet wasn’t really going to die, but the fact that Mark Gatiss basically told them to go ahead and die - and the amount of Sherlollians who liked and reblogged the post - was fucking disturbing.

Sherlollians - the same people who proclaim to be all about love - laughed along with a man who told us to die, and then posted pictures of graves directed at us, made fun of and belittled our hurt, and created an anonymous hate blog to collectively ridicule depressed and suicidal people.

And then they turn around and call Johnlockers toxic bullies.

FOR WHAT???

Is it because a few Johnlockers sent you anon hate? Oh that’s interesting because you guys have done that too.

Is it because of a bit of improper tagging? You’ve done that too.

Is it because of post hijacking? Ship hating? Bullying? Real people shipping? Hating on cast/crew? *checks notes* Yep, you guessed it. There’s not a single thing you can point to to claim that we’re a “toxic” fandom that YOUR side of the fandom has never done.

Johnlockers have NEVER behaved like this when you guys get thrown under the bus. Remember when Moftiss confirmed the ily wasn’t genuine by saying Molly got over it by shagging someone? Did we gloat about it? No, we just reiterated how Molly was again thrown aside and mistreated for the sake of a male character’s growth. Something you guys keep ignoring despite claiming to be all about female empowerment.

You are the immature toxic bullies of the Sherlock fandom. You are the reason people are warned not to enter the Sherlock fandom. (Remember when you tried to “warn” the YOI fandom about us and they were like “actually we haven’t had a single problem from any of the newcomers”)

We’ll listen to your complaints about Johnlockers being a “toxic fandom” when you guys stop exhibiting the exact behavior you always accuse us of. Projection sure is a powerful thing, isn’t it.

Y'all, I just wanna take a second to talk about someone awesome. 💕

So everyone in the TJLC community probably knows Steph over at @inevitably-johnlocked. But I always wonder if some people know how heckin rad she really is.

I am thankful for, grateful for, in awe of, and constantly inspired by Steph. She has more dedication than almost anyone else I’ve seen in TJLC. Her metas are exhaustively researched, meticulously tagged and linked, and best of all, she gives credit where credit is due to the many other amazing meta writers, showing that our understanding is a collective effort.

She’s also hella kind and friendly and helpful. When I joined TJLC, I was looking at many people that were the complete opposite, making the community seem like a very unwelcoming and harsh place for newcomers. I remember messaging Steph with silly ideas for a Johnlock video when I still barely knew my way around and barely knew anyone, and being so intimidated, which she instantly shot down by being hilarious and sweet and insanely helpful.

I owe her a ton of credit for my place in the community and for the kindness she welcomed me into the community with. (lmao Steph I was so alone and I owe you so much) Thanks in large part to her good natured responses, which I see her extend to everyone who has a question or needs help, I reached out to more TJLCers, felt confident in putting content into the community and participating in discussions, and made tons of amazing friends. I love all of them, and am so grateful for our shared journey, but Steph is exceptionally badass.

I have never once seen Steph respond negatively to someone who didn’t thoroughly deserve it, and even then, it’s done with way more class than even I can extend to antis and trolls. She goes out of her way to not only write excellent meta, but truly help people understand it and find it. She hosts community watchalongs, shares content from tons of people who wouldn’t have exposure otherwise, has badass fic rec lists, is humble and learns from mistakes, answers more asks than anyone I know, and is funny and dedicated and legit.

I get to meet her in a few weeks at 221bcon (and other awesome people, ahhhh basically it’s gonna be an amazing time) and needless to say, I’m hella excited.

All of this is not to discredit the many wonderful people in TJLC who contribute, interact, and are helpful or kind or awesome. But Steph is just fantastic all on her own. She’s the one who helped me along the most in TJLC, and I know that I and most/all of my close lovely friends on here think she’s just the greatest. 💕

Regarding the current pre-TFP chaos

There is no way they are not making Johnlock canon at this point. The writers are not that stupid. If they can add enough clever subtext to this show to inspire literally thousands of detailed written analyses and videos, they can make two men kiss. Is filming extra scenes or misleading the prescreening viewers really out of their league? Um...we’re talking about the same people who rigged up a bed on a rotating frame in the middle of a bloody field just so they could get a nice-looking shot in ASiB. Come on.

If we have gone to some hellish universe in which Mofftiss have gotten a partial lobotomy and decide not to make it canon, we have the knowledge and numbers to a) drag them so hard that no show dares to queerbait to that extent again and b) make the groundbreaking, ingenious, and nuanced show that we believe is Sherlock ourselves.

Scared? Anxious? You are not alone. This is a large and diverse fandom; I guarantee there are at least 100 people who feel exactly the same way that you do, for the exact same reasons. Whatever happens, we will be there for each other. Remember that.

Personally, I’d be delighted to help out anyone who’s worried about the future of the show or the fandom. Ask or message me anytime, about anything. If you just want to smash the keyboard and send elmo.gif, that works. The Lying Detective: I’m Actively Hate-watching Now

SPOILERS FOLLOW

I didn’t like the first episode of the new season of Sherlock, but I sincerely hoped having the risible nonsense of the Mary Watson/AGRA storyline tied up would free things up a bit. I think the Culverton Smith case might have delivered, but they went all in on the “I’m so beset by grief I’m hallucinating my dead spouse” gambit. Really? In what we keep being told is “clever” television? Grief is about absence, about a space that can’t be filled, about feeling trapped and asphyxiated by it. But we were never actually shown Mary and John’s relationship, so all the emotional heavy lifting is being done retroactively, and it’s heavy-handed, saccharine, out-of-character claptrap. John being with Rosie, struggling to parent alone would have had me in floods, but Moftiss always chooses exposition when there isn’t a gun being pulled or a joke being cracked. There is something about genuine, non-sensational emotion that seems to make them uncomfortable; it always has to be book-ended by effacing humour. As much as I dislike the “I see dead people” shortcut to exploring grief, I understand that it probably worked for most of the viewing audience, but Moftiss could have at least allowed some of those moments sink in. They just had to cut off the opening scene in the therapist’s office with police sirens and helicopters in service to a gag about Sherlock’s penchant for grand entrances.

Twists>Action>Jokes>>>>>>>>Characters.

The “Culverton Smith is a serial killer case” was serviceable (in spite of the horrible pun they worked in), and I liked Toby Jones’s performance, but they oversold him as a villain, and it didn’t really live up to the hype. There was too much extemporizing – all that soliloquizing in the boardroom had me staring off into space after a while. Giving Toby Jones all the scenery in Greater London to chew isn’t the same as making his character “evil”. There being no victims was a huge omission, in my opinion. You have to see what they’ve done, whom they’ve hurt or none of it really matters. Them erasing all of Smith’s victims sits really poorly with me, and it goes back to the heart of my problem with the direction of the show – the people don’t matter. Not really. Nevertheless, the story held my interest, and (before the twist at the end) I actually quite liked Sherlock’s interaction with Culverton’s “daughter” (even though it was a bit drawn out).

The middle episode of each season tends to be the weakest, and The Lying Detective was definitely one of the better offerings, and I loved Mrs. Hudson deducing Sherlock, her recognising that he’s not a “cold reasoning machine”. So why am I actively hate-watching?

Where to begin?

“I killed his wife.”

No you didn’t, Sherlock. Stop making everything about you. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the potential source of the guilt – he thinks he should have seen it coming and is gutted that he didn’t. That feeling that there’s something incongruous about his reaction stems from Moftiss’s story being driven solely by plot. The entire premise of The Lying Detective is that, even off his head on drugs, Sherlock can predict other people’s behaviour a fortnight out. So why the Norbury deduction, then? You didn’t have to be a genius to see that de-escalation was the only play. So, is Moftiss’s Sherlock clever or isn’t he? It depends on what direction they want to take the plot. They play up his intellect for style when it suits them and ignore it when it gets in the way of having a trigger pulled. If he’d given it all he had, used the full power of his mind and still failed, Mary had still died, that twinge of the ego and John’s irrational feeling of betrayal would have been more warranted. All the stubbled, Byronic theatrics would have been earned. He would have been replaying everything in his mind to see what he missed. But he didn’t miss anything. He just acted like a not very clever arrogant cock.

I’ve made it pretty clear that I think the Mary Watson/AGRA storyline was a steaming pile. I didn’t like or believe her character. The character is head-spinningly inconsistent because they keep shoving her around in the plot and not reconciling the conflicts that arise. Nevertheless, I’m sickened by how ill-used she’s been. If The Six Thatchers didn’t already demonstrate it, Mary’s story was all in service to ramping up the man-emo quotient – to get John and Sherlock to gnash their teeth and rend their garments. The loving spouse, smiling beatifically and giving emotional advice from beyond the veil – that’s where they decided to take the BAMF assassin. They can take that nonsense straight back to the vomitorium where they sourced it. But that’s not really my biggest problem with the narrative.

“The only way to save John is to make him save you.”

As, Moftiss has written it, the entire construct of the Sherlock-John-Mary relationship is organised around John being an object – there to be manipulated. Mary couldn’t advise Sherlock to treat John like an adult and be patient and do the unsexy, heavy lifting of being a best mate. That would mean treating John like a person, not a series of buttons to push. Do you know what works with most non-personality disordered people who have “trust issues”? Persistence. But that’s not flashy enough, though, is it? Telling a drug addict who has a history of reckless behaviour that might reasonably be classified as self-harm to put himself in terrible danger to spur John into action is something a psychopath would suggest. That is Moftiss’s vision of the loving spouse whose spectre is haunting John. Except I honestly don’t think they even see the deeply disturbed psychology they’ve conjured. In their minds, Mary has been completely rehabilitated, and her egging Sherlock into self-harm is noble, just like shooting and nearly killing him somehow was. Are mature adults who’ve actually been in relationships or who’ve just interacted with other human beings for any length of time really meant to be taking any of this seriously? And then there’s the notion that someone as warped as Mary had much to teach John about being a good man – that her vision of him was somehow superior to what he already is. John Watson isn’t perfect, but this idea that he needed Mary to improve him and get him up to scratch is not only unsupported by everything that’s come before but relies on the grotesque stereotype that every man is a bumbling dumb fuck who needs a “good woman” to straighten him out. Disgusting. Moftiss have constructed a reality in which a person who is willing to shoot and kill people to hide her past ill deeds has a superior moral compass to someone who inappropriately texted a woman he met on a bus. All the brutal violence Mary did to the eponymous hero of the show is inconsequential, but John flirting via text is of great importance. It’s no wonder the story is careening out of control. The things that should matter don’t.

The return of Irene Adler.

A few months ago, in an Instagram post, I theorised that Sherlolly was the ship Moftiss would most likely go for (there was never going to be Johnlock). I knew an attractive woman was always going to be their play, so, barring a newcomer, I assumed it would be Molly. Irene Adler would be next in line. Sherlolly just seemed like the likeliest outcome given Molly helping Sherlock fake his death and the way she came out of her shell and started calling him on his bullshit. But I underestimated just how much Moftiss esteem flash over substance. I do not like the handling of Irene Adler in any of the recent incarnations of Sherlock Holmes and will continue to argue until there is no breath left in me that: Irene Adler is not Delilah to Sherlock Holmes’s Samson! In the original Arthur Conan Doyle story, A Scandal in Bohemia, she beats him while keeping all of her clothes on and by outstrategising him, not by distracting him and drugging him. Not-quite-dead Mary cackling, “I bet you saved her! The posh boy loves the dominatrix!” made me want to rage puke. The whole point of Irene Adler, what makes her “The Woman”, is that she doesn’t need anyone, least of all Sherlock Holmes to White Knight for her. She handles her business better than he ever could.

Moving on.

I can’t believe they actually had a middle-aged adult tell another middle-aged adult: “romantic entanglement would complete you as a human being.“ Our relationships (romantic and otherwise) should enrich and improve our lives, but this notion that we’re all hobbled and shambling through life and need to be repaired by our “soulmates” has got to stop. It’s why so many people can’t have healthy romantic relationships grounded in reality – they’ve set their significant others (and themselves) unmeetable, fairy tale standards, and their disappointment and ensuing resentment are foregone conclusions.

Take it all straight back to the vomitorium.

No, Jim. I don’t. Whenever a show circles back to the vanquished supervillain, Fonzie is prepping his water skis.

The secret brother is really a secret sister whose name is The East Wind, and she’s completely unhinged and may be Moriarty or is at least connected to him, and there’s some weird psychosexual element between her and her brother who doesn’t seem to know what she looks like, and…

GTFOH AND GTFOH FOREVER!

Once Mary Watson said “It’s a skip code”, a preposterous story became virtually inevitable, so I’m not surprised Sherlock has descended into near pantomime. The real reason I’m pre-emptively upset about the finale is because I know Eurus’s mental illness will be treated solely as a plot driver. Moftiss will only scratch the surface of the pain, the fear, the feelings of failure, the societally enforced shame, the hopelessness that a family goes through when one of them is diagnosed with a mental illness serious enough to require long-term institutionalisation. Really think about what it means to be related to someone who is criminally insane and how much good drama lives there. There will be helicopters and gunfights and fisticuffs, maybe even abseiling, in the finale, but virtually no real examination of the damage done by the emotional claymore mine that went off, kept going off and is still going off in the Holmes family after Eurus was diagnosed. And Eurus herself? Maybe they’ll show her as a child strangling a cat or hurting Redbeard (if they even pay her that much attention outside of letting her gorge herself on the scenery), but she’ll be a caricature, a monster with no inner life. How do I know they’ll do this? Because they spent this entire episode using visual and auditory hallucinations – signs of extreme mental disturbance and distress that require urgent psychiatric intervention – as shorthand for “I’m grieving the death of my spouse”. They couldn’t show John alone, struggling with a newborn, suffering through the feelings of abandonment and intense isolation that underpin grief because it’s too ordinary.

Everyone has been pointing out all the call-backs to previous episodes and what they mean. Here’s my go at it: I predict that John’s grief and psychiatric issues are now magically fixed, just like his limp and his PTSD. Moftiss told us from the very beginning that Sherlock was shallow and emotionally incoherent. But:

I’ll hate-watch the finale just for the sake of completion and as source material for the inevitable rant.

I’ve been a bit harsh on some things over the years. I wrote a particularly scathing attack on DD/LG stuff that I genuinely went too far with (even as I continue to inch away from kink stuff in general due to evolving tastes), I wrote a scathing Man of Steel calling it a punchy, grimdark piece of shit that earned me a death threat, and early in my blog’s history I wrote a fair few anti-SJW things that was more railing against the idea of over-sensitivity and cherrypicking words to attack someone rather than supporting the rights of people. I still have an issue with people cherrypicking words and throwing a person’s combined history at them to break them down, and while I still believe in the good that social justice blogging is aiming to do, I also spent more than enough time in that circle and I can’t tolerate the always-on, ever-upset atmosphere that drains the energy out of you one blog-post at a time.

This is about none of that. I’ve made my peace with those subjects. But there’s one thing that I haven’t budged on - If anything, I’ve gotten more hard-line about it as of late.

I cannot stand fandoms where people think it’s okay to attack each other, like feral children biting each other until someone draws blood. Fandoms have been going sour for me for a few years now, but it’s only recently that it’s been hitting a tipping point - thanks in most part to Sherlock and the continued campaign of rabid Johnlock shippers.

The following post will be my diatribe about rabid fandom and how they actively hurt their shows. Expect SuperWhoLock and Avatar: The Last Airbender shenanigans.

First of all, a disclaimer: I’m not against all fandoms, and while I’m going to be going after a gay ship, I’m not homophobic. Because surprise surprise, you can think someone is being a massive assholish baby about Johnlock and care about/support gay or queer issues. You can read anything you like into what I say, but if you’re going to break me down for being an ignorant redneck or what have you, please note that a harsh opinion on a fictional ship and its fanatical following isn’t tantamount to saying “gay people have enough good things, and they still want more? Ungrateful little sods.” I only call out rotten behavior because it is rotten. I’m also not against the ships themselves, moreso the idea that it is THE ship and you are OWED the ship and not getting the ship legitimized is DEGRADING and DECEITFUL. That is a trait that applies to ships of all orientations.

I’ve also been in a few fandoms in my day, and I still interact closely with some splinter groups of fans. I’m a big Evangelion fan, I read Questionable Content and have since I was 13 and I’ve been posting in a forum about said webcomic since 2012. So please - don’t take what I say as a sweeping critique of all fandoms, or all fans. Because there are fanbases that are polite or small enough not to be fucking crazy and legitimately harmful to the people around them.

So with my opening statements out of the way, let’s dive into the face-meat of this post - Sherlock is about as toxic as it was three years ago, and has managed to garner an even crazier conspiracy squad full of elitists, loudmouthed “enlightened” fans and ridiculous degrees of fan-wank. It’s gotten so bad that I hear Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are getting pretty fed up with the constant hate.

Tell me - what is particularly sane or healthy about obsessing over a non-existing “true” finale of the show, the date of which was derived from taking letters from a show’s credits, breaking them into numerical equivalents and multiplying them to get a date and time? Shows don’t do that. Network shows definitely don’t do that, and very rarely do they disrupt their planned broadcasts - especially for a hardcore contingent of fans who have been harassing them for years. What makes you think that you, a driving force in crazy, is so deserving of a hidden fourth episode that the BBC has to fuck their other programming over to appease? You aren’t. No-one is. Maybe a crazy Netflix show could do that, since digital distribution is a lot less committal than network television, but it hasn’t happened yet and it wouldn’t happen on a broadcasting station as established as the BBC.

The very thought of a real-world conspiracy to “reward” shippers for their diligence and patience, made in the face of Moffat and Gatiss explicitly stating “IT’S NOT HAPPENING”, is nothing more than entitlement. You feel entitled to John Watson and Sherlock Holmes smooching, you want it to happen so badly that you would weave subtext and hidden clues out of thin air and screech when the actual showrunners shoot it down - I mean there’s nothing wrong when that context is shared and agreed upon among the fandom, but when you throw it in a producer’s face as “OBVIOUSLY canon” and try to destroy the show by mass-complaining through the BBC’s official complaint form because the showrunners didn’t legitimize it, that’s a massive fucking problem that stems from entitlement. They’re either wrong about their own creation, or they’re hiding something that only you and your friends, the true fans who rebel against the filthy Casuals™, would understand, and you rally behind them to say “It’s okay, the world is ready for Johnlock!”, to coax them to part with their precious love-baby and to show your support.

But there’s no fucking love-baby. There never was. It was a fan reaction that continues to spiral into insanity every day because you think these two are so right for each other that the thought of them not fucking is offensive to you.

The “original sin” that broke me out of fandom happened here on Tumblr, in 2013. You remember Avatar: The Last Airbender? Funnily enough, it predates Korra’s shipping wars by six years - and it continued to rage past the advent of Legend of Korra. It was still sparking in 2016.

Avatar was the first show I consciously shipped for, and I was a Kataanger. I liked the idea of Katara and Aang eventually pairing up. An opposing ship, Zutara - Zuko and Katara, the fans of which called themselves Zutarians - were the aggressive arch nemeses of the Kataang shippers. I took part in the shipping wars, but after a while, I just got sick of it. Moreso after I saw the entire show, where not only was Kataang the one that made it out alive - as I feel it should have - but the show could have survived without any pairings, because the group had a great number of platonic relationships. Take romance out, and you still have a pretty decent ragtag bunch of misfits. I still feel like Kataang was telegraphed from the first few episodes, and a ton of arguments I heard for Zutara to justify it at “canonical” - Zuko seeing Katara in Aang’s arms in the first episode and disliking Aang because he looked like he was hurting a pretty girl, telling Katara that he’d “save her from the pirates” in the Water Scroll episode (the pirates he hired to tail the Avatar, and the situation being that he was blackmailing her with a precious family heirloom to sell out the Avatar - really romantic, right?) - were self-righteous, taken out of context at best and smugly insufferable at worst. I still have a bit of a chip on my shoulder about Zutara.

But as a teenager - around 16 - I realized how fucking moronic it was to be actively angry about shipping. Both ships can have their highs and lows without being canonical, they can co-exist in peace. People don’t need to sling shit at each other to justify their love for their ship, because people are going to find different things romantic or sexy and it’s no-one’s business to tell them that their feelings are wrong. The sole idea behind shipping - love - is not an ideal that’s worth clawing out someone’s eyes over. I eventually stopped shipping Kataang for a while.

Fast forward to 2013 - at that point, I’m 17 going on 18. I’ve chilled the fuck out, I’m on tumblr, I’m ready to see some cute fucking fanart. I browse the tag for a couple weeks. It’s all good, the fanart is good.

Then a newcomer makes a post that mentions Zutara. People strain themselves not to get mad, and tell this person not to mention Zutara in the Kataang tag, because it’s an insult to their ship and it’s rude to mention it in the Kataang tag. Then the newcomer says “Alright, I didn’t mean to cause trouble. I just see some points that go towards Zutara or Kataang, and I’m not too fussed about which one is ‘correct’ or not.”

The tag FUCKING EXPLODES.

The newcomer is called a troll, Kataangers firebomb the Zutara tag for their perceived “attack” on Kataang, and hostilities are actively stoked by both sides. It calms down in three days. Because so much as mentioning another ship’s name in another ship’s tag - not putting it above the other ship, not trying to offend, just mentioning it - is an offence punishable by fire.

These fandom people, new fans and classic, grown-up fans like myself alike - even older fans in their twenties - are as fucking embarrassing, hostile and shitty as a bunch of tweens were back when the show was still on.

I commented on all that, and people sent me defensive messages about how it was alright to act like a petulant child on the internet, because it’s something they’re passionate about and insulting that behavior is insulting to them. I relent and chill the fuck out.

That entire scenario? It happened three separate times, always in its entirety.

The fans of a thing I like couldn’t leave something alone, like conflict was a fandom tradition and they were proud to take up some sword and shield to defend the honor of their favorite characters. The slightest slight against them was grounds for combat, for anyone with a heartbeat to break out the claws and slash at their “opponent” for invading their territory. The word “militaristic” is thrown around a fair bit in fandom, sometimes as a cover for “fascist”, but the Avatar fandom? Pre- and post-Korra? It felt like people were LARPing combat scenes by smooshing their hands on their keyboards, to cause the most distress.

And that brings me back to Sherlock.

Johnlockers, TJLC or whatever the acronym is - the most vile, blind, deaf fans of the bunch, but not every Johnlock shipper - can’t play nice with any other ship. Johnlock is the end-goal, and they will pursue the blood of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss if they are not handed to them what they feel is rightfully deserved.

That is a sick way of thinking.

You can’t enjoy Johnlock for its own merits, revel in the material you are handed by other fans? The only option is for the pairing to become canonized, and the showrunners are in denial to the degree that they’re beaming you and your friends coded messages to say that it’s okay, that it’s going to be a thing, and that you can’t lose hope? If Johnlock isn’t canonized, the LGBT community has taken a shark-sized bite and will not be insulted by these BBC fascists who strung them along for so long?

I have a theory, and it’s a bit crazy. Maybe - just maybe - Mark Gatiss isn’t coding a secret gay relationship into a show because he’s gay himself, maybe him and Steven Moffat never intended for Sherlock to be this big maze about two men falling in love and bettering themselves through their love, and they aren’t being cracked down upon by the BBC. Maybe they actually mean it when they say “Johnlock isn’t canon”. Maybe they don’t have enough pull to broadcast a secret episode of their TV show on network television, and you are wasting your time by justifying the intentions of some people you have never met by the fiendish measures you wish that they would be able to take.

And maybe - just by the smallest sliver of a chance - that doesn’t invalidate Johnlock or any of the work you’ve put into it as a super-fan.

Like with Avatar, a pairing doesn’t have to be canon to be legitimate, to cause an effect or stir in a community or individual. Johnlock has already affected the real world, in good and bad ways. People have come together and become friends over the ship. You have the groundwork of a beautiful thing, a ship that has endured for over one hundred years in various shapes and sizes, a ship that has been canon in different continuities - you have the feelings Sherlock gives you towards these ships, and the ship has the clout of decades worth of interpretation. That’s great.

But that doesn’t make it canon in this universe, nor does it make it okay to ostracize and attack people who think maybe it’s not such a good idea to spend nigh-on five years obsessing over a bunch of fictional people. And maybe this unintended ship by the creators doesn’t need to be canonized. Maybe they don’t have to bend to your demands, and they have free reign to make the show that they want - and by exercising that right, they don’t intend by any measure to exploit your or lead you along, and mean no disrespect to the LGBT community.

Maybe Johnlock was a side-effect of Sherlock’s earlier days, or even planned to be canon once upon a time. And maybe the fanbase bloating to a truly sickening degree, flooding Tumblr with millions of uninspired, truly fanatical posts, turned them off the idea.

There’s a thousand things to say about Sherlock as a cultural phenomenon, or as an example of fanaticism affecting the course of a show’s run, and I don’t know any of it. All I know is this: that hardcore Johnlock shippers are absolutely bonkers, and for the past four years I have had no desire whatsoever to watch the monstrosity that spawned SuperWhoLock. I know that I actually kind of want to watch it now because of a multishipper friend who likes Johnlock, but doesn’t stand for any ship-bashing or malicious fan-wank garbage - niceness and kindness towards other fans and towards the show helping to disperse some of the garbage I always saw Sherlock as being encrusted with. And I know that not all Johnlock shippers are bad, the same way not all Zutara shippers are bad, despite my personal investment in it not being canon. Hell, the Kataang/Zutara conflict shouldn’t have lasted into the New Tens, period. We should have known better. I can see Johnlock shippers as being like any other decent fan of anything, provided that it hasn’t engulfed their life like an asbestos fire.

The idea behind shipping is love. In any way shape or form - familial love for the ships focused on “home”, on tight-knit families being formed. On romantic and erotic love, for those who live vicariously through their ships and swoon at the thought of them, or who want to get fucked by some fictional person/animal/object. Through platonic love, who want to see two friends have an unbreakable bond that keeps all involved parties anchored and strong. And I think it’s fucking deplorable that anyone would taint that feeling with hate. Whether you’re Johnlock or anti-Johnlock, or a militant Avatar shipper, or anyone who will belittle, attack or aim to hurt anyone for not conforming to their way of thinking. People like that are fucking horrendous, soul-sucking people. It’s people like that that makes shipping such an unattractive idea to a great deal of people.

My issue with shipping is the legitimate, mouth-frothing fanaticism exhibited by the truly invested, the hate and genuine desire to hurt other people for not believing in something and the sickening entitlement that so many ships are rife with. For a long time I just hated shipping, period - but I can live with shippers and the concept of shipping, as long as those people can act like composed human beings who don’t bay for blood. I have a specific dislike for SuperWhoLock as a whole, but Sherlock specifically - but given that the fans are okay people, I don’t have a beef with Johnlock as a concept or as a whole.

If the outcome of anything I just said boils your blood and makes you want to “stage an accident” for insulting you or your precious thing, by all means - come at me. But I repeat - the idea behind shipping is love. I fundamentally believe that for shipping as a whole, whether it be for the fictional love of two characters or a fan’s love of those characters interacting. That goes for Johnlock as much as it does any other ship. If my grievances truly offend a majority of Johnlock/TJLC people, then ask yourselves - how twisted do you have to be to take personal offence at being referred to as “about as toxic as it was three years ago, and has managed to garner an even crazier conspiracy squad full of elitists, loudmouthed “enlightened” fans and ridiculous degrees of fan-wank”? Does it hit that close to home that it feels like a personal attack, and does that initial summation invalidate anything I say afterwards by sheer virtue of existing?

Anything in this post could be wrong. I could be being too harsh. But if anything I said provides a flood of hate or a fucking bounty on my head for saying it, then you’re a part of the problem I just described. You are literally problematic.

hello, I'm magda. for some unknown reason, I only happened to stumble upon the show this october, so, I'm still quite new. but it was all love at first sight (just as john and sherlock's story).
