do you have any facts about dreidels?

Though the Dreidel is now associated with Judaism and Hannukah, it was in fact a Viking tradition from Norway in the 800s.

Bloodnar Kriegfang invented the Dreidel in order to decide what torture to inflict upon his captives. To this end, he inscribed four runes on each side of a spinning toy that was carved for him by his great-grand aunt. The runes, Naudiz-Gebo-Haglaz-Sowilo determined whether the victim would be hanged by piercings through their ankles from a tree, forced to walk away from a hook through their intestines, "blood-eagled," or forced to work retail during the holidays.

The Viking-Jewish accords of the 1700s saw Judaism borrow many traditions from the north, including the Dreidel. As Jews of the time had little use for antiquated torture methods and the Vikings had already died out centuries earlier, the object became a Hanukkah tradition because why not. The runes were turned to Hebrew, Nun-Gimel-Heh-Shin, which stood for "Nes Gadol Haya Sham" which is Hebrew for "Some Shit Went Down."

A game was invented to involve the Dreidel, in which different types of nut were bet and taken by the winner, including hazelnuts, pecans, walnuts and pistachios. I figured this was a family tradition and it was normally just a gambling thing but apparently literally every single Jewish person I know also played with nuts, so I guess the answer to traditional gambling substitution really is "Deez Nuts."

Anyhow, if you roll a Nun, you do nothing; a Gimel means you win the pot, a Heh means you get half the pot, and a Shin means you add an entire walnut. The modern five-sided Dreidel also adds an Aleph, and if you roll an Aleph you are trapped in Jumani until someone else rolls another Aleph, or possibly a Lambda.

Review:

A mixture of Japanese folklore and Jumanji with a touch of horror as four friends are forced to play a game that trapped their friend whom they abandoned... yet if they lose they'll be trapped here forever. Four years ago, five friends started playing a game... but only four of them survived. Now at the end of their senior year of high school, Owen, Madeline, Emerson, and Dax begin seeing Ian (their friend who disappeared) and his apparition is telling them to finish the very game they played all those years ago. Now they find themselves restarting the game that got them in this problem in the first place, a very complicated game with no instructions and transports them into a eerie hellscape of Japanese underworlds, facing off against monsters and demons, and trying to solve seven challenges in one night before they are trapped in there forever. Who will survive by the time the clock runs out? This one was a weird one for me, I love Jumani and I love Japanese folklore/horror, yet the combination of both in this story just felt off for me. It was told through various POVs and I just didn't find that I cared much for any of the characters or the story in general. I tried to remain invested but in the end just found myself spacing out. I love horror, and I adore game style challenge horror games but this one just felt very meh. I think if you enjoy very light horror and game style adventure stories, this one might be for you!

Glenram. A backwater town where, according to Sojia, nothing interesting ever happens. Sure there is the occasional haunting and there are reportedly people who have somewhat uncanny abillities that a normal human being should not have but everyone simply turns a blind eye to it. When strangers come poking for the town's secrets, no one knows where they got the idea that there might be strange things happening in this quiet part of the world.

Strange things that become a lot harder to hide when people who can wield the harsh elements of nature start pouring into the town and Sojia finds out there is more to her ability that can make objects invisible.

The residents of the once quiet town scramble for an answer, but find it hard to point a finger as to what to blame. Is it the supernatural raising from the depths of the waters the town was build upon? The government facility nearby that no one knows the exact funtion of? Or perhaps it is just the people themselves who have become tired of hiding in the dark?

[ad_1] The Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has been directed to utilise the services of police and Rangers and even consider the option of contracting the services of retired army men, if there is any such need, for a definite crackdown on water pilferage and illegal hydrants in the city. The direction to this effect was given by caretaker Sindh Local Government Minister Muhammad Mubeen Jumani, as he held a meeting with officials of the KWSC in his office on Thursday.He asked KWSC Chief Executive Officer Syed Salauddin Ahmed to use whatever resources were available at the disposal of the water utility to expeditiously resolve the issues of water theft and unauthorised hydrants.He said the caretaker administration would provide a roadmap for the incoming elected government in the province to ensure that the civic agencies and public utilities were able to provide maximum relief to the masses.He said the KWSC officials should ensure that there is a just distribution of available quantity of water among all areas of the city while the sewerage system issues of the people should also be resolved on a preferential basis.Jumani said the officials of the water utility should discharge their duties in this regard without being blackmailed by anyone or coming under any political pressure. He asked the KWSC to devise a firm mechanism to improve its billing system to generate more revenue for water and sewerage systems in the city.Responding to a query from the local government minister, the KWSC chief told the meeting that there were a total of 250,000 manholes in Karachi as the water utility required 20,000 to 25,000 covers in a year to fill them. He said the KWSC had been providing covers for all these manholes through the system of 246 union committees in Karachi.Ban on new plans On the directives of the interim minister, a ban has been imposed on approving maps and layout plans for new housing and commercial constructions in the province.A directive to this effect was issued by the Local Government Department to the Sindh Building Control Authority and different development authorities in the province.The Karachi Development Authority, Malir Development Authority, Lyari Development Authority, Hyderabad Development Authority, Sehwan Development, and Town Planning Department will adhere to this ban.The ban will remain imposed till the adoption of a new construction policy shortly to be prepared by the caretaker cabinet, said the minister. A day earlier, the Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami emir, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, called on KWSC Managing Director (MD) Salahuddin at his office where the two sides discussed the issues pertaining to water supply in the city. The MD assured the JI leader that the corporation would play its role with the support of the JI against illegal hydrants and water theft. He also assured coordination at the town and UC levels. Following the meeting, the two sides held a joint press conference at the headquarters of the water corporation. the wishes do come and go from the family now known often as the Ef ..

And it needs to be told .. not be held .. 

In Hyderabad at the shoot for Project K, during an action shot, I have got injured .. rib cartilage popped broke and muscle tear to the right rib cage .. canceled shoot .. did Doctor consult and scan by CT at the AIG Hospital in Hyderabad and flown back home .. strapping has been done and rest been advocated .. yes painful .. on movement and breathing .. will take some weeks they say before some normalisation will occur .. some medication is on also for pain .. 

So all work that was to be done has been suspended and canceled dropped postponed for the moment until healing occurs ..

I rest at Jalsa and am mobile a bit for all the essential activities .. but yes in rest and generally lying around ..

It shall be difficult or let me say .. I shall be unable to meet, the well wishers at Jalsa Gate this evening .. so do not come .. and do inform as much as you can to those that intend coming ..

All else is well .. 

Getting time to spend time with Babuji and his genius, his mind his words and his immense creativity .. the essence of life resides in his writings .. and such a learning and amazed joy to be in his company ..

There is desire to share .. to share what ever little that I may interpret from his words and his memories of the times spent with him .. to lament the limited .. to be in awe of the vision and the intellect of such a being .. and wonder how ever did one think of all that was written spoken thought by him ..

HOW ..

... and a book of a collection of some of the letters he corresponded with certain individuals finds me leafing through them to meet the mind of Babuji and one such :

Apne vatavaran se koi nirapeksh nahin reh sakta  . Har pankaj mein pank ka kuch na kuch ansh rehta hai  - pankaj ko keechad lapetne ki zaroorat nahin . Kuch lapet te hain ye aur baat hai . Aap kehte hain videsh mantralay ka vatavaran ya dilli ka vatavaran aapki kavita mein nahin aaya . Itna asamprikt rehna kisi ke liye sambhav nahin . Vo kisis na kisi roop mein aaya hi hoga . aisi sadhana mujhmein aa gai hai ki kamalvatt keechad ke oopar rahoon to meri aplabhdhi  bahut choti nahin hai  .

You cannot be dispassionate or indifferent to your environment. In every lotus ( Pankaj – the one that blooms in sludge and slime viz. the lotus ) a bit of the sludge always remains – it is not essential for the lotus to wrap itself in sludge . Some do it, but that is a different matter . You say that ‘the atmosphere or the environment of the Foreign Affairs Ministry or that of Delhi has not been reflected in your poetry’ . To be so untouched for anyone is not possible . It does appear in some form or the other . I have now achieved such meditative accomplishment that remaining above the sludge and mud of the lotus is no small cognitive accomplishment for me .

Babuji was the lecturer in the English Department of the prestigious Allahabad University .. he did his PhD in English literature from Cambridge in 1954 .. went in 1952 and within 2 years finished his PhD which normally takes 4 years .. his dissertation was ‘W B Yeats and Occultism’  ..

WB Yeats ..  the accomplished and famed Irish poet, who had a passion for the occult, particularly that which emanated from India ..

When Babuji returned after this achievement, a rare PhD, perhaps the very first Indian to have got a PhD from Cambridge in English Literature, he was not given the recognition he so deserved from the University. In fact they actually reduced his salary. This was very upsetting for Babuji and he resigned from Allahabad University, joined the AIR, the All India Radio as a Producer, until eventually he was called by Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India to the Foreign Ministry, now known as the External Affairs Ministry, then headed by Panditji , to be the OSD, Officer on Special Duty in the Hindi Department, in New Delhi . 

Such learnings are indeed most rare .. and to have time now, as always, to be in the midst of all the incredible writings, is a god send .. I am blessed  .. and to be able to share some of this with all is a duty .. 

I feel your presence at the Jalsa gate .. but shall be unable to show the face ..

Salah satu lokasi street food itu berada di Jalan Letjen Sutoyo, Kelurahan Tukangkayu. Puluhan pedagang menjajakan aneka menu takjil. Mulai dari makanan, minuman, hingga camilan. Jangan sampai acaranya lancar, tapi menimbulkan sampah dimana-mana," kata Bupati Ipuk.
