My souring sentiments on Sailor Moon's manga

It'll be a surprise to no one who knows me even remotely that Sailor Moon was my everything back in my childhood. From the age of 9, I was utterly obsessed with it.

That was just a couple of years shy of 30 years ago.

Since then, I've often revisited the series. I watched the entirety of the Viz dub of the classic anime; all 200 episodes.

And I loved it all the same, if not more so than before. Because now I have context for why exactly the anime was the way it was, including its gradual diversion from the manga source material. And I respect the hell out of the staff who poured their life into this work, while concurrently running with the manga and doing whatever it could to not completely outpace it in the narrative.

Are there a lot of fillers in the OG anime? Yes. Too many? Well, not so from a functional standpoint (this show had to run weekly for 5 years), but there are definitely some fillers you could skip and miss nothing in doing so.

But a story like Sailor Moon honestly needed some breathing room in order to properly flesh out the cast.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the live-action reimagining of the show, was phenomenal back then (despite looking low-budget even by 2003 standards), and having re-watched the whole series recently, I can safely say PGSM more than holds up and deserves way more love and respect than it gets. It's THE perfect example of reimagining the story of Sailor Moon while still respecting its roots and maintaining the soul of the franchise.

Which is exactly why I couldn't stand Sailor Moon Crystal. We knew from the off that it was supposed to be completely faithful to the manga, but one look through @crystalvsmanga will show you Crystal took shitloads of "creative liberties", and the amount of changes I could dare to call "good"? I could count them on one hand.

The animation is low-hanging fruit, because everyone and their dog knows how godawful it was for the first two story arcs. But more than that, I actually loathed the general art design. Yukie Sakou's style DID NOT closely resemble Naoko Takeuchi's. People kept saying it, but I couldn't really see it. The eyes especially are a far cry from Takeuchi's style. And Sakou's style did NOT facilitate the OTT cartoony expressions that were definitely present in Takeuchi's manga; everyone looked so goddamn soulless, like overly-expensive porcelain dolls.

My biggest gripe with Crystal was the story, of course. While a great deal came from just being from the manga (which I'll get to in a bit), the changes they made went a long way to actively make the manga's story worse. My main takeaway from Crystal S1-2 is that it took itself waaaaay too seriously.

That being said, I did like Crystal's third season a lot better BECAUSE Chiaki Kon had way more competence and held a lot more respect for Sailor Moon. Like, my god, for once it felt like there was a soul in this show! It can actually take the piss every now and then!

Some silly things kinda broke my immersion (such as the Senshi just being able to fuckin' fly and Chibi-Moon in particular was literally sky-stepping), but most of that can be blamed on the source material it was adapting. While I was fine with Crystal3, I definitely didn't feel it was anywhere near as good as Sailor Moon S. Outside of Hotaru/Sailor Saturn having more of a presence, there wasn't really much in Crystal's take on Infinity that I liked better than S.

But most of that comes down to the fact that I liked S more than manga's Infinity arc to begin with.

Which is a good segue to talk about the manga proper.

I have not yet watched Eternal or Cosmos. the movies that adapted the last two manga arcs, but it'd be redundant since I know ahead of time what they're going to be about, and so far I haven't heard about any of them deviating from the source material, so it'd be moot to talk about them even if I had watched.

When I first got my hands on the manga, which was when I was around 12-13 and thus got the crappy MiXxZine translations, I was fine enough with it. Thought it was too fast-paced and didn't care for 99% of the villains being one-and-done jobbers, but I was also reading it with my impressions of the 90's anime characters still intact. I was reading the manga like an extension of the anime, rather than the other way around.

It wasn't until many years later when I grew older, when the manga was properly translated, when I acquired the wisdom my teenaged-ass self lacked, and learned to look at the manga as a completely separate entity that I started to see the cracks in the manga's narrative.

Further rereads have left me in something of a mindfuck, as I experienced the manga the proper way. And I realized:

The more I read the manga, the more I disliked it.

The manga is lauded for having an infinitely better depiction of Mamoru, as well as his ~Miracle Romance~ with Usagi.

Objectively, the manga definitely spends lots more time giving UsaMamo attention as a couple than any other aspect of the story...

I'd say they're also more developed as individuals in the manga too, but usually the beats, uh...

... let's say they usually ring hollow, when these two (and sometimes their daughter) are the only ones who consistently get shit done across the series. Hell, on the rare occasion that the Inner Senshi weren't rendered into street pizza, Neo Queen Serenity basically told them to fuck off and let her daughter, past self, and past hubby take on motherfucking DEATH PHANTOM/NEMESIS BY THEMSELVES.

It's likely because my first exposure to Sailor Moon was via the 90s anime, which had more of a focus on friendship and comradery between Usagi and her friends than it did her romance with Mamoru. I mean, romance was DEFINITELY a prominent thing even in that iteration of the story, but that wasn't where my interest lied. I was, am currently, and always will be more interested in Usagi's galpals than I'll ever be interested in her love life.

And, well, I'm sure this qualifies as a hot take, but...

This one moment with Usagi and Mamoru in the elevator (hell, their interaction across this entire episode was great) resonated with me far more than any ultra-romantic declarations of eternal devotion that Usagi and Mamoru kept regurgitating at each other in the manga.

Granted, the manga had a FEW moments early on where their dynamic was more playful, but they were pretty much confined to the early chapters and this element of their chemistry pretty much died not long after this.

Some say 90s anime Mamoru was far too mean-spirited in his teasing of Usagi. And I mean, sure, he was kind of a douche at times, but he usually got some karmic blowback from it (I remember one time he made Usagi cry without even really meaning to, and she cried so loud in public that randos nearby were giving Mamoru the evil-eye or a scolding). But honestly, after R, Mamoru kinda became a bland, generic love interest, just as he almost always was in the manga. The only difference was that anime Mamoru was never granted powers that were literally equal to Usagi's. The manga gave him a GOLDEN FUCKING CRYSTAL.

There was that infamous break-up arc in R that, yes, was shitty in concept and execution. But if I had anything positive to say about it, it at least shook up the status quo. It didn't make him immediately fall into the bland, generic love interest he would soon become. And it gave us some of the most emotionally-charged Usagi moments in the entire anime.

Conversely, in the manga, we had THIS shit for our UsaMamo "drama":

(the former incident with Usagi literally accusing her boyfriend of falling in love with a kid, by the way, happened while MOST OF HER FRIENDS WERE KIDNAPPED BY THE ENEMY AND COULD'VE BEEN DEAD FOR ALL SHE KNEW AND YET SHE FUCKING HAD TIME FOR THIS STUPID SHIT)

Everything seemed to revolve around Usagi and Mamoru (sometimes Chibiusa too). It lowkey came off that way at times even in the 90s anime, but in the manga or Crystal? You'd be hard-pressed to find the girls engaging in their stated hobbies at most points in time, because they're usually all together and talking about their prince and princess.

Hell, even Haruka - Sailor Uranus herself - seemed much more interested in Usagi than she ever did in Michiru, her actual girlfriend.

So... am I just missing something? I've seen people say that as they grow older, they prefer the manga/Crystal to the 90s anime. But I've never seen anyone other than myself express the opposite sentiment.

But it's true - unless I completely leave my brain at the door, I have a hard time enjoying the manga for what it is. The characters I'm most interested in or attached to quickly get swept aside for the characters I have the least interest in. No more does that ring true than the Stars arc of the manga, where Naoko Takeuchi basically speedruns killing off literally the entire cast until Sailor Moon's the only one left standing. Most characters don't even get to go out in a blaze of glory or anything - it's got nothing on the finale of the 90s anime's first season in that regard. If you're lucky, you'll get a single panel where your entire existence is ripped to shreds - but sometimes you'll be killed literally off-screen!!

There's a number of questionable manga-exclusive aspects that rubbed me the wrong way as well, such as poor Sailor Pluto being assigned as a child to guard the Door of Time in complete and total solitude. While I appreciate more Silver Millennium lore that the manga provided (the anime hardly mentioned it past the first arc), it was more than a little uncomfortable knowing the OG Queen Serenity conscripted the Inner Senshi as small children to become Princess Serenity's guardians. Really casts Queen Serenity and her Moon Kingdom in a much darker light - like maybe Queen Beryl and Queen Nehelenia had a point in trying to take them down (though the manga I believe retcons all past villains as incarnations of Chaos, so that arguably removes all prior villains' agency?). Lots of little things that I didn't think twice about, but now that I look at them again, I'm wondering WTF Naoko Takeuchi was thinking.

Though I don't want to be too hard on her. Poor girl was working under stress far longer than she'd planned to (she'd intended on ending the story either by the Dark Kingdom or Black Moon arc), so it's no surprise there's a lot of clunk and clutter in the narrative.

I often wondered if Naoko Takeuchi really wanted to make Sailor Moon with a Super Sentai-esque setup in the first place. After all, her first big hit was Sailor V, which was exclusively Minako and Artemis fighting evil with Minako having her own masked love interest she ended up being at odds with and he eventually died. With a scant few secondary characters here and there.

It led to me thinking about what Sailor Moon would be like if Naoko kept the cast to a more Sailor V-like size. That, perhaps, the Sailor Moon she really wanted to make would be quite a different beast from how we know it to be today.

So this lengthy diatribe about my personal conflicts with my waning fondness for the manga versus my strengthened love for the OG anime and live-action show was actually a preamble to a bizarre AU I wrote an outline for over a year ago but never posted in public. I had considered posting it to Sailor Moon's Reddit back then, but I (probably wisely) held off, as my musing went way off the rails.

But I figured now's a good time as any to share it here, at least. Though it'll need to be its own post since I wrote so goddamn much in this post alone, wow.

Happy Halloween 2023!

This is something long overdue. Even though I stopped posting my commissions on here that doesn't mean I've stopped getting them!

I've especially enjoyed getting Halloween commissions because those are really fun to conceive, order, and see made into reality. I've especially enjoyed getting them from Aeolus06 and he's never disappointed. Sadly due to me being between jobs I couldn't get any this year. :( That said I've decided to use this as an opportunity to show what I've got over the last few years and hopefully you'll love them as much as I do! :)

These first four are unique in that these were all from the same year (2020 to be exact). Since Aeo has a cool down period between commissions, I actually got these all done over a period of a few months. XD Took a lot of luck and prayer, but I got all the ideas I wanted done!

First one was probably the most complex, but was worth it because of how well it fit. Star, Marco, and Hekapoo from Star vs The Forces of Evil as AndrAIa, Matrix, and Older!AndrAIa from Reboot! Much like Matrix, Marco had a bit of age jumping that fit naturally (especially body types and eye scars). Plus Star and Hekapoo are shipped pretty hard with him so it was natural they dress as the different versions of Matrix's lady love.

Also, Fun Fact: Marco's scar/prosthetic eye is on the wrong side compared to his costume, but I felt it was better to ignore it than have Aeo flip the entire costume. XD

Next up we had some classic hotties from Canada, Lindsay and Courtney. Everyone with a pulse will know I'm a Courtney fan, so I'm always eager to give her some love. And while I'm not AS big on Lindsay, she's a fun character and I have some friends who love her too so I didn't mind them sharing the spotlight.

Obviously the theme/inspiration behind this pics conception is the fact Lindsay and Courtney pack the biggest T and A on the island respectively, so they needed some costumes to illustrate that. Thus we got Courtney as everyone's fave lady wrestler Rainbow Mika from Street Fighter and Lindsay as the boxing cheerleader Tiffany Lords from Rival Schools. Both ladies who kick ass and look good doing it! Give these ladies some love folks!

Another Fun Fact: This one took faster to do than I expected, mostly cause I didn't realize my refs were thigh high. In the end I feel it still looked good and didn't bother bringing it up. XD

Here's another cute couple and one I think deserves more love. Eclipsa Butterfly and Globgor are also from SVTFOE and honestly very sweet and adorable. While they're regarded as evil by less tolerant folk, they're honestly some of the sweetest characters you'll see on the show. I feel this is a nice contrast to their costumes, Sindel and Shao Kahn from Mortal Kombat. I went with the MK9 versions of their outfits since they were both modern and simple. Didn't wanna be THAT guy who commissions SUPER complicated outfits. I'm not a sadist! While later games would retcon Sindel into being just as evil as Shao (something thankfully corrected in MK1) I still feel this outfit and character works for Eclipsa, even if she and her hubby are as far from evil as you can get. XD

Final pic of this year is another couples pic with Danny Fenton and Paulina Sanchez. I ship these two and take no shame in it. This was originally gonna just be Paulina as Phantom Girl from Legion of Superheroes since the name and colors matched Danny perfectly. But then I figured just having Paulina in costume wouldn't be fair, so I had him dress up as Timberwolf, since I recall them having a few moments in the cartoon. A cartoon, much like this pairing, is very underrated. XD

Now to 2021! This was a fun crossover and and me deciding to avoid "themes" and combining two character pin-ups in one! Once again we have Hekapoo and this year she's dressed up as Otedamako. Who's that? Only my fave Monster of the Day from Sailor Moon! :3 To her side with have a humanoid Rarity showing off her darkside as Martha from Helluva Boss! This one came from the animated opening in G5 that had Rarity showing off some spiky teeth and a crazy look in her eyes. IMMEDIATELY brought Martha too mind. All and all, very happy with how these two came out!

And now to the prior year of 2022. By this point Aeo started coloring the stream commissions and honestly, it was worth the price increase. Dude is a machine! If this one has a theme it's basically me taking the waifus of my close friends (Chill, Terrible, and Raccoon) and dressing them as other sexy waifus. From left to right we have Himiko Toga from My Hero Academia dressed as Harlequin, the Harley Quinn of the Gods and Monsters film. A very hot/underrated design for a VERY twisted take on the character. Toga makes it work! Front and center we have Wilhamena Mettle from OK K.O.! as Starfire, specifically the comic book version for obvious reasons. XD Finally we have Juri Han from Street Fighter dressed in the tight leathers of Penelope Spectra from Danny Phantom, specifically her second form. Lot of specifics in this piece. XD

Final Fun Fact: Was tempted to have Wilhamena as Star Canary, the fusion of Starfire and Black Canary from the Batman/Superman comic. Very hot design. XD

And a bit of a bonus! I ended up really helping out a new friend on deviantART back in 2020 and got to get a bit of art as a thank you. Courtesy of XJKenny we have Meteora Butterfly, daughter of Eclipsa and Globgor as Mileena. Also her MK9 design, this not only works for Meteora herself given her story, but also matches up with her parents' costumes as well!

Well that's everything I wanted to share this year! This has been a rough year for me personally and for the world as a whole. But I'm hoping we can turn things around a bit with what bit of the year we have left.

I've always felt a lot of connection, and admiration for the commitment to hope in media like sailor moon, pmmm, mlp, so much more. the same ways that you've described, I'm in my early 20's for reference idk. I'm really struggling with questioning these concepts with certain things going on like genocide. Is it selfish for me to tell someone going through such war to believe in hope? How do I deserve to say that from my privileged safety? I understand if that's too deep. I should probably ask a therapist but it's just been on my mind a lot. I felt like you might have some insight to offer. Thank you 🥲😅😵‍💫

This is such an interesting, important ask and I'm honored you felt like I would have a good take on it!

I'm like you. I live in a comfortable, safe environment and I have never known the hardship so many other people know. But I believe with a burning intensity that hope is probably the best, most important thing humanity has (aside from love, of course). And that it's at its most important in the bleakest of circumstances.

Honestly, getting right down to it, I would argue that not only should everyone hope, we all must hope if we want things to get any better. Hope is everything, even when there’s nothing else. Especially when there’s nothing else.

We're all only alive today because our ancestors believed enough in hope to keep going, often in the face of insurmountable odds. I feel like this is especially important to remember for marginalized groups. Your ancestors fought like hell so you could have a better life. They survived and endured. They wouldn't want you to give up hope. They would want you to carry that torch of hope into the future.

Closing this out, I would just say that cynicism and nihilism, while understandable, never helped create a better future. The future and progress as a whole have always been driven by those who refused to give up, who got beaten down again and again but still always rose to their feet. It's fucking hard to do that. I know it is. But you never know how your words and actions, however small, will fling a light into the future that will help those who come after us.

These five artists have inspired me to do art myself and I really admire their art ~ So I��m going to tell you about them and why they inspired me and they will even be tagged. If any of the artists that are in the list see this, then I just want to thank you for inspiring me.

5. Kika-ila

This artist is known for doing Total Drama art, and I was obsessed when I first saw her art! Her style is so freaking cute and I actually think her Total Drama Kids stories are better than Total DramaRama itself. I actually used to love Total DramaRama, but now not as much. I don’t hate it thought. I love Total Drama, but most YouTubers I watch that do TD content are leaving the fandom, like TotalDramaRicky and Noahh, which really does suck, but I can see why and they want to move on to other stuff. I really like the timeline drawings she did, and she even did it for FNAF (Five Nights At Freddy’s) too! FNAF is one of my favourite horror video game franchises, my favourite is the second one, which is actually a prequel! I didn’t even know that until a few weeks ago! But overall, Kika does awesome art and she deserves more attention!

4. thegreatrouge

I love this girl’s art. She’s known for doing art with rubber hose characters, like Felix The Cat, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, Mickey Mouse and even Cuphead and Bendy! She has made a whole series called “Bendy And Boris And The Quest For The Ink Machine” and it’s amazing so far! The project is currently on hiatus right now, I’m not sure if she’s discontinued the comic and I really hope she hasn’t. I hate stories that are left on cliffhangers, along with “Two Sides Of The Story” which is a HTF comic by one of my good friends Emmy, she discontinued the story because she believed it was cringe. The art? It was cringey at first, but the art got better at around chapter 4. The actual storyline? Yeah, it was quite cringey actually. Can’t really blame her, but I actually did enjoy the story, I’m even doing a redraw of it and might even do a non canon continuation of it! I won’t do it for BABQFTIM, since there is already some continuations of that story. Rouge has also done a Cuphead In Wonderland project too which is pretty good too! Unfortunately, she’s been losing motivation to do art recently, which really upsets me. She’s an awesome artist, and I’d love to help her feel motivated again. Most of her art is sketched, or digital but without colour, but I can understand that colouring in art can take time. This girl is pretty good at art and she definitely deserves more motivation to continue doing what she loves.

3. The-Wallop-Cat-12

This artist mainly does Cuphead art, but she also does Sailor Moon, Splatoon and Mario art! Which is awesome, since I love all of those video games and Sailor Moon is my favourite anime. I don’t watch anime a lot, but my personal favourites are Sailor Moon, One Piece, Naruto, PPG Z, Yo-Kai Watch, Demon Slayer and Dragonball Z. Cuphead is definitely one of my favourite video games, despite how hard it can be. I got it for Christmas last year at it has been fun playing it. I also love VOAdam’s comic dubs of Cuphead Comics and he even did dubs for Wallop’s Cup Bros In Wonderland comics! I was working on a comic about it, but I discontinued it since I lost interest. I still love the idea of it though. Cuphead X Alice In Wonderland. I love Alice In Wonderland. There’s even some heartwarming comics she’s done with the the Cup Bros comforting each other that are real tearjerkers. I also really liked the Size Shifting Cup Bros comic she did. I like how Drama Days (a YouTuber I like) coloured in the comic too. I don’t know why, but I love a cartoon episode where someone becomes a giant. Don’t ask me why I love it, I just do. Probably because of Alice In Wonderland. Wallop is my favourite Cuphead artist, and she is very good at what she does!

2. ChaoChao0071

Oh my god, this girl… SHE IS AMAZING!!! I’m actually kinda jealous! Her art and animations are so damn good! She mainly does HTF content, but she also likes Invader Zim and My Little Pony. I love her crossover series with HTF and MLP “Everything Is Broken” and I like her Invader Zim series, “Not Your Enemy”. Looking back at when she started compared to now, she has been improving over the years! I really like her fanmade MLP character, Creepybloom. She’s such an amazing and interesting character. Chao’s voice acting for her is just splendid. (No pun intended cos there is an HTF character named Splendid and he’s my favourite character). I love villains that eventually turn good and realise their mistakes, like Sunset Shimmer in MLP: Equestria Girls and Vomitdid in Drama Days’ Splendid series. I also really love him. Definitely an interesting fanmade character. I also love her HTF OC’s Whiskers, Smokey and Holes. They are awesome concepts to EIB. Fun Fact, I actually didn’t like them at first when I first saw them in Part 12, but I eventually grew interest to them in Part 14, since we didn’t really see them in Part 13. Overall, this girl is AMAZING and I hope I’ll be able to animate like her one day. Her animation is so smooth and she is so skilful!

1. EmmyJeanBean

Emmy, if you are reading this, then I just wanna say… Thank you. Thank you so much. You are my best friend. You were the one to inspire me to do the art I do today. You have improved so much throughout the years, and I love every single art piece you have done. I follow you on DeviantArt, Instagram and Amino. I’ll make sure to follow you when or if I get Twitter. You are the reason why I do the art I do today. Everything about you AU makes me so curious and I love the way you made the characters and you OC characters are amazing too. It makes me wish they where in HTF too, like Angus, (Lammy’s ancestor) Samantha, (Splendid’s sister), Tammy, (Cuddles and Toothy’s kid), all of Cuddles siblings, everyone’s moms just all of your OC’s definitely deserve to make it into the show if it ever comes back. I’d love to to anything to bring HTF back. We can bring HTF back together. With all the fanmade stuff people are making, like Amensia, Nemao’s fanmade episodes, Drama Days’ Splendid series, EIB, etc, we can definitely make it possible since that shows that people still care about the show. Happy Tree Friends is my favourite cartoon and programme and I’d love to give it a revival. Let’s all bring HTF back to life, together. Emmy, you have actually inspired me to do some projects and art pieces, like your ‘Cannibal’ comic. It has inspired me to do a comic that I’ll be working on for the whole summer, but I won’t spoil it yet! I’ll keep it a surprise until the cover is out. Just in the nick of time for smaugust, here are the hydra brothers Morder, Kashmir and Koel! I was hoping to finish their parents today too but Im feeling a lil too tired to give those pieces the polish they deserve so I guess ill finish those tomorrow hopefully. Also I don't know what the background is, I was completely clueless on what to do and so I just turned my brain off and eventually landed on this which works i guess- A friend of mine mentioned it reminded her of a pokemon battle which i can see. Better throw a pokeball now that they are distracted.

Anyway about the hydrabrothers All hydras are born with two heads, the two original heads were Morder and Koel. Koel admiring his father's many heads and his most idolised dad being a center head and leader, wanted to become a center head himself. So he voluntarily got himself decapitated by morder. However to his horror, instead of regrowing in the middle with a new sibling on the side, the new derpy sibling Kashmir became the middle head instead. Kashmir is friendly, happy go lucky and always willing to make new friends eventhough his brothers are trying to be menacing to uphold the family reputation. Their dad is a mob boss and leads a gang of greek monsters and creatures. The brothers are the heir to his business though he isnt too happy about kashmir having popped up. He is very proud and fond of morder and koel though. More about the individual brothers: Koel: Sees himself as the leader. He has a very hot temper and a very toxic relationship with masculinity. He will insist that he is the manliest man that ever was and refuses to do anything that would make him look "soft" including crying or showing love to his brothers and also disapproves of morder's bisexuality. He idolises his dad don, who encourages his toxic behaviour and attitude.

Morder: Levelheaded and often the one to get him and his brothers out of trouble. He is a lot more laid back and though he is a tough guy, he also has no issue with flirting with guys and girls alike and does have a bit of a dramatic theatrical flair to him. He doesn't really care all that much what either of his parents think of him but still he goes along with the flow, not really interested in kicking up a fuss. He is very extroverted and enjoys going to parties Kashmir: innocent, friendly and oblivious, kashmir is the newest addition to the family. He is what hydra dad would call "a defect" as in his opinion, hydras should be strong and aggressive and always ready to fight. Hydra mom however, has quite the soft spot for him and spoils him (and hydradad's own mute soft head) like crazy. The brothers' room is largely overtaken by kashmir's plushie hoard and whenever they watch tv at home, kashy is the one who gets to pick what they will watch which most often is sailor moon, ghibli movies and other feel good anime series. Kashmir is fascinated by japanese culture, especially the kawaii aspect, and has appropriated it for himself. Yep he is a cringe weeaboo who uses random japanese phrases and words into his vocabulary sometimes. Hydramoms will import all the cute merch and fun snacks their baby boy asks for, and his brothers get none of it. It's another reason morder and koel aren't the fondest of kashy. Kashy is oblivious tho and still loves his brothers. Okay thats all time to make myself dinner

my favorite Sailor Moon "villains" have always been the four generals or the Four Kings Of Heaven. they're such interesting characters to me & watching both anime adaptations again & reading the manga my heart breaks for them cuz in any iteration they deserved so much better.

in the manga (& later on in sailor moon crystal) they were much more fascinating complex characters cuz they were written with a tragic backstory & having moments of doubt & internal conflict. they had no agency over their own minds & bodies being under control of Queen Beryl, as well as being separated from their prince Endymion once being his knights sworn to protect him & earth. & they also really cared about one another unlike in the 90s anime. they were so beautiful & sad.

they were also intended to be love interests of the sailor guardians before Naoko for whatever reason I still don't understand killed them off.

we could've actually gotten the guardians x shitennou ship in crystal as well as a reunion with Endymion.

they were kept alive longer than in the manga & even regain their memories as knights & of the guardians only to just simply die in the end. it's not fair to them they didn't get a chance for redemption & to live happy lives with their loves & their prince. it's not fair to the guardians that they didn't get their loves back while Serenity still has Endymion, & it's not fair to Endymion that he didn't get his knights back while Serenity still has her guardians. why couldn't the writers just keep them alive. why did they have to be tragic characters.

while I love the 90s anime knowing how the generals really were in the manga I dislike their iteration in the 90s anime more. with the exception of Nephrite I can't stand what complete heartless evil bastards & how shallow 2 dimensional they were. & they all hated each other so much except Zoisite & Kunzite.

crystal really could've made things right with these characters but just thought keeping dead would be better when it's not. we'll never see them get the happy ending they deserved & it really hurts. 💔

Yo, I think facebook groups AND Reddit have got to be the shittest places to have ANY discourse on ANYTHING, not just Sailor Moon. But really, despite it flaws and shortcomings, the manga really doesn't deserve the scrutiny it gets compared to the SACRED COW the 90s anime is. Look how they constantly coo and gush over it! Many people know the original source material had its issues and limitations but the anime should've expanded and improved those issues and limitations not make it WORSE.

To add on to what I posted, the anime was the perfect medium to add MORE-DEPTH to the original source material and EXPAND and they FAILED even at that. For crying out just look at SuperS and Sailor Stars, or fucking S. I'm sorry but I'll gladly take the manga and Crystal's ending over the S anime just because Sailor Moon isn't a naïve dimwit so easily duped. The one time Usagi should've been rightfully DRAGGED over the coals for such a stupid, reckless, and emotionally driven decision.

It's get to the point with the 90's anime with how people gush about it like " Can please be fucking for real for a moment?" Take the nostalgia rose tainted glasses off and please be for real.

Yes You entitle your opinion and a version you like all you want but come the fuck on!

Like yes I grew up with it and wouldn't be a fan of SM but after reading the manga, the 90's anime fucked up a lot of shit that they really could have expanded on.

Hell they fucked up characters' personalities, development , backstories, and storylines so bad. Not everything have an emotional impact because they either recycle things from the pervious seasons they did have emotional impact and ran it into the ground or it's no emotional pay off became it was so much filler that when it comes to actual plot you have to cram it in to do a spree run of plot. Then because of that it's not believable when you have Rei and the girls plus Luna bulling Usagi for 30 plus episodes then all of sudden when she have to save the world they act like they actually fucking loves her.

Because you should be able to do character development and plot at the same time.

PGSM PROVE THAT!!!

The manga is 60 acts done in five Story Arcs which in the manga world, is very very short ( cough One Piece is still going cough). Yes it does have somethings that Naoko could have expanded on and she had her limitations thanks to certain people but for the most part, she did what needed to be done with what she could do. With PGSM she able to expand on somethings that wanted to do in the manga but couldn't and it shows.

But the 90's anime had 200 episodes which 98 of the episodes of filler meaning that 102 episodes are considered plot episodes. That's is almost half plot and half filler. Granted Manga and 90's anime was going on the same time but with the filler episodes you could have kept the plot moving and had ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVOPLMENT! The plot fucking stops for almost 5-6 episodes before it starts again and before you know it you are at the season finale episodes.

Like I said before S, SuperS,and StarS Finales sucked compared to the manga.

Hell You can compare it to Classic and R finales in the 90's anime without comparing it to the manga and those two finales to me still hold up better than S, SuperS, and StarS.

Cause with Classic and R you have the emotion impact and does have a payoff.

Classic ending with Usagi turning into Serenity and the ghost of the girls helping her fight will always be emotional.

R is really the only battle where the whole team really participates in ( I have said that countless times) that no one dies or is khocked out.

With S this supposed to the the first battle with all 10 senshi plus Mamo since it's like that in the manga but hell in the 90's

Chibiusa is pretty dead with Mamo being human ventilator so they are both out.

Pluto Dies in a Helicopter by stopping time to save Har/Mic.

Har/Mic get rid of Germatoid but is useless with the fight with M9 since they got stuck by M9 hair to her statue and with the fight of P 90 did nothing but just read Usagi for filth.

The Inner senshi creating a forcefield outside so they are not actively in the battle with M9 and P90. Which got blasted to bits after M9 but the Grail in that machines to gave P90 Blob. Which they got knocked out.

Usagi did nothing but gave the Grail to who she through was Hotaru but was M9 , cried Moon Crisis Make Up while pounding ground and crying pretty, got power from the inner senshi and Har/Mic which all look tore up. Got Baby Hotaru.

Sailor Saturn was the only one doing shit by getting Chibuisa soul back, destroys M9 and destroys moaning P90 Blob with Jubilee powers... ( yall better get that joke)

They supposed to be a damn team but only one person does something to defeat P90 and M9.

With SuperS they supposed to be a whole team in that again plus Mamo getting his Golden Crystal in the manga but hell in the 90's...

The Outers Family are no where to be found.

Usagi and Inners do Sailor Planet attack on Nehellenia which backfired big time.

Usagi and Chibiusa turn the Golden Crystal into a sprit bomb filled with Children Dreams.

So Mamoru is not the holder of the Golden Crystal.

The inner senshi got knocked out for the 50 millionth time.

Usagi had to freefall as Serenity to save Chibiusa as Nehellenia pretty much said " Fuck this kid and her pretty horse too"

Also the fact no one turns Eternal and Usagi turns Eternal in StarS but no one else.

Now with StarS supposed to be the season that everything is on the line. That the stakes are high in the manga but hell in the 90's...

We don't know Mamo is dead until the last few episodes just like Usagi.

Galaxia kills inners with one blow which has ZERO emotional impact.

The Har/Mic betray Usa,Sets and Hotaru by siding with Galaxia which they kill Sets and Hotaru. Then die themselves after attacking Galaxia for her star seed and realized she doesn't have none............

The Starlights take up too much screentime.

Usagi flies around for 15 mins in her birthday suit for "purity reasons" for an handshake with Galaxia and the battle is over.

Everyone comes back standing in a circle like they are in elementary school telling Usagi good job while she flies into Mamo arms still in her birthday suit for " purity reasons" .

Here's the reason why these seasons doesn't have emotional impact to me.

In the manga from DK to Dream Arcs she have her support system ( Mamo and the girls ) with her to fight the big bad in the final battle. It's only in Stars Arc, where Galaxia is trying to break her take her support system and the reason why she fights away from her bit by bit until she fighting alone and she feels alone

How can StarS in the 90's anime have that same Emotional Impact when S and SuperS finale battles she pretty much does it alone anyway?

She does it alone anyway cause they are either, not written in, knocked out or not powerful enough to be of any use when she fights the big bad head on.

Or the fact they redeem the big bad ( SuperS, Stars) or someone else defeats them ( S)

So honestly StarS feels like a normal battle for her. Like a normal day in school.

She's doing it alone anyway without them in the final battle.

They barely help her in regular battles.

But in battles when everything in stake?

Where all hands supposed to be on deck and she's the only one answering the roll call always?

What are your thoughts on Sailor Moon and its characters? I'm personally still surprised over how ahead of its time it was and how much it holds up in today's media.

I was going to answer this ask while I watched Promise of the Rose last night but it’s not available where I watch it 😭 this is devastating…

Anyhoo, I have a LOT of thoughts re:Sailor Moon! I'll list them below, rapid-fire style, in no particular order. I also have no idea what the consensus is so there may be some hot takes I’m just not aware of haha :P

I had no idea how much of a little shithead Usagi was! I guess seeing gifs and images from her I had a very different concept of what she'd be like, but I really love how much of a gremlin she can be.

For such a romance-obsessed series (which I don't mind and actually quite enjoy most of the time) they don't actually show you much of the actual relationships, which I think is a shame. You've already sold me on Usagi and Mamoru, but I need more meat on those bones! Show me them going on cute dates! Show me arguments that last longer than two lines (and are often motivated by magical destiny BS)! You're telling me about a love that has managed to survive through death and the thousands of years in between their past and present lives, now show me it!

I'm such a sucker for the premise of S1. The sense of love and duty persisting through death and reincarnation, the struggle to regain the memories of a past life while keeping your footing in the modern world, the classic balancing act between being a teenager and having the weight of the world on your shoulders as a superhero, the engaging dynamics between the members of the Dark Kingdom and, of course, the bonds between the Sailor Scouts...

...and that finale, goddamn. What a freakin' sucker punch. It's one thing to allude to the fact that death is a very real possibility when facing the enemy throughout the series, but the show hadn't done much more than flirt with it a bit here and there. Seeing that flashback to the Silver Millennium and realizing that not only is it possible for them to die in the line of duty, but that it's actually a very likely prospect...and then following through with it! That sequence, as each of the Guardians sacrifices themselves to clear the way for Sailor Moon, with Usagi going through pretty much every stage of grief in a mere few minutes, had me slack-jawed the whole way through. And Usagi finally fully embracing her identity as Princess Serenity and sacrificing herself as her mother once did, wishing for something as simple (as understandably selfish, as heartbreakingly yearning) as giving herself and her beloved friends their normal lives back, free of their burden. Genuinely perfect ending.

I think the only part that doesn't work for me about the S1 finale is that the monsters that kill the Guardians aren't shown to be special in any way, just volunteers from Beryl's monster hordes. I wish they'd been her elite royal guard that never left her side or something, otherwise why wait to deploy what are clearly your most powerful mooks? It makes the lieutenants lesser by comparison.

The bespoke animations for each of the signature attacks (and the transformation sequences, of course) are great, but there's like...no fighting in this show, which is disappointing, ngl. I know this isn't a shonen and I'm not asking for complex fight coreography, but trading a few blows, damaging the environment, just generally showcasing that the Guardians aren't just soundbites and elemental ranged attacks would be much appreciated.

I regret to inform you all I've become a Sailor Earth truther. NARU DESERVES BETTER (or at least, she deserves to have superpowers so she doesn't get her life force drained every other episode, jfc)

S2 had kind of atrocious pacing - I didn't mind it having two distinct arcs, but the Ail and An arc dragged on for too long and too much time was spent with Rubeus relative to the other Black Moon clan members, so it really robbed them of their impact. I felt great satisfaction when Rubeus was defeated, but the others...eh. I did love the Spectre Sisters and their decision to become normal humans, and Wiseman/Death Phantom (though he kinda came outta nowhere) was super cool. Never underestimate the stark image of a bleached human skull and a cool voice haha.

I feel like most people probably find Chibiusa really annoying (and I was right there with them a few times, admittedly), but remembering that she's a terrified, traumatized child really helped. It was utterly bizarre of Usagi (and the show, to some extent) to consider her any sort of rival for Mamoru's love, that was uncomfortable and ridiculous. The reveal that it's her fault that Crystal Tokyo went to shit was great, I loved that (and generally the implication that the Black Moon Clan is only a problem because they were excluded from utopia as part of Silver Millennium 2.0 for very vague reasons felt like a very intriguing detail, like Neo-Queen Serenity might've also made a huge mistake there.)

Just generally speaking, I wish the Sailor Scouts were a bit more consistent in battle; they're either utterly dominating or getting absolutely destroyed within moments of arriving.

The drip (as the kids say) in this show is impeccable lol everyone always looks amazing

I could go on but you get the idea! I just started Sailor Moon S yesterday so I'm still trucking along. If there's anything I didn't mention that you want my opinion on feel free to hit me with another ask!

I am Machi. Age: Unknown, Magical abilities: None.

My favorite color is dark blue. I used to like sweet foods. I have been revived two times. One of the "anon"'s told me dinosaurs are cool, so I suppose they are.

I am half robotic, not connected to the "internet" as people call it. All my known information is told to me so it may be inaccurate, please tell me if it is so I can update it.

(Ps: While interacting with MILGRAM blogs, Magishou anon will not be the same! They will be much more energetic, will be able to use healing powers, and will be more aware of internet slang-type stuff… oh and glowman wont appear. They’re unaware of magishou anon in the MILGRAM universe!! They’re also known as knife anon, but that’s not important…)

Magishou anon is a very unique anon, as they can only give what they have. And (in the pjsk universe) they really wish they could give healing powers, but they can’t due to lacking healing powers themselves.

For the MILGRAM universe, instead of being unable to give healing powers they can’t give any physical boosts. Only magic, no extra stamina or anything.

They don’t like @/magical-anon-pjsk, due to feeling inadequate compared to Magianon.

Also this might just be me fangirling (genderneutral) over magical girls… :3

SHORT!! (About 5'2)

Very hip with the kids (can and will use internet vocabulary when possible, JUST to confuse Magishou anon.)

Hates cats and chocolate. The cat hating is because Magishou anon is a cat, but I just thought them hating chocolate would be funny.

Believes gender is useless and would prefer to simply not be referred to at all. (but when needed, they/them pronouns.)

Only around 300~400 years old, so extremely young compared to Magishou anon.
