Lt. Colonel Watkins and Maj Dave Dempster, his systems operator, had a rather harrowing experience after flying a combat sortie over North Vietnam. As they hung on the tanker boom in the final refueling before returning to Kadena, Colonel Watkins opened his helmet faceplate to drink some cool water. In accordance with the plan, they lit the burners and soared up into the high-speed, high-altitude regime to cruise home.
Major Dempster noticed that Colonel Watkins’ words had begun to slur and soon realized he was suffering from a lack of oxygen. He realized that a total loss of consciousness was imminent unless Watkins got back on oxygen or they descended to a much lower altitude. Dempster had only autopilot directional control from his ( in the RSO cockpit, you cannot see the pilot) rear seat; he knew his options were narrowing very fast.
Despite the fact that they were out over the open sea, Dempster decided to appeal to Watkins’ ingrained pilot training and began to read the “Start Descent” checklist in a loud, authoritative voice over the interphone.
To his delight, Watkins responded with each command, and by the time they dropped below 25,000 feet, he came around. Although the last 10 minutes were a complete blank, Watkins fully understood that he had failed to close the helmet faceplate properly.
It was just one more reminder that flying a Mach 3.2 aircraft is a demanding activity; the simplest error can have grave consequences.
Outstanding job to Dave Dempster, who was fighting for his and Jim’s life as the SR 71 dropped 50 to 60,000 feet with a partly unconscious pilot. I had the privilege of knowing both of these men as neighbors.
Colonel Watkins also figured out how to stop a recurring problem once they took the SR 71 out of California. Double-engine flameouts continued to plague the operation over the next few weeks until Lt. Col. Jim Watkins devised an idea to keep the engines a few hundred rotations per minute above the checklist-approved values while slowing down from supersonic speeds. Once they standardized that procedure, flameout occurrences became rare.

Subsegment: Old News, (slightly) Odd Coincidences
On 28th October last year, the US air force announced plans to replace its entire fleet of F-15 fighter jets—officially named the "Eagle" but affectionately nicknamed "Big Bird"*—based in Okinawa, Japan, with a “rotational” force. It was a move widely (tho' not necessarily correctly) interpreted as being a lessening of commitment to the US military bases on the island, chief among which is Kadena Air Base.
In a mildly odd coincidence, that week was also a newsworthy week for the Kadena coin (KDA), a token native to the Kadena blockchain, which achieved a temporary gain in value when UK-based start-up Database of Native Assets (DNA) launched its tech enterprise "creating unique digital passports which prove authenticity and ownership of jewellery, collectibles, art, rarities and luxury goods" on the Kadena platform.
KDA also spiked on March 11, when it was listed by Binance. That was a day after a Japanese court awarded over $11million to residents of Okinawa seeking compensation for US air operations in the context of parallel legal claims which also sought to bring an end to US air operations altogether.
In fact, the history of Kadena runs broadly inverse to the fortunes of US military operations in Okinawa.
Kadena was initiated in June 2016, a couple of months after an article appeared in the Japan Times on 27 April outlining and substantiating concerns expressed by US veterans that they were victims of exposure to Agent Orange and/or Agent Pink while stationed on the island.
The initial successful seed funding round for Kadena took place within two months of an award of $265 million to residents of Okinawa in 2017, one month after a US sailor was arrested for exposing himself and masturbating in front of Japanese women in Kitanakagusuku Village, one day before demonstrations in Henoko and at the end of a period of unexplained difficulty in retaining and deploying Japanese security guards to the bases.
And on 11 April 2018, Kardena closed another funding round on the same day that a court in Okinawa sentenced a U.S. Marine based there to four years in prison for killing a 61-year-old man in a car crash while driving under the influence of alcohol.**
Does that qualify as a mildly odd coincidence? Perhaps not... but, just maybe.
Or...
Perhaps that's all just a way of saying that I found this article from The National Interest last month strange, discombobulating and vaguely hyperbolic:
*air superiority variants of the Eagle of the kind deployed to Okinawa have also been nicknamed "Light Grey" and "the Flying Tennis Court", while strike variants are known affectionately as "the E", "Bomb Eagle", "Beagle" and "Mudhen".
**also, coincidentally, the date on which the death of Jack Higgins, author of "The Eagle has Landed", was announced.

Almost Cut My Hair
At the beginning of my junior year at Buena High School in Sierra Vista, Ariz., a good friend who had gone off to the University of Missouri-Columbia to study journalism wrote a letter in which he recommended a song from the debut album by Crosby, Stills & Nash. It was “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” by Stephen Stills about the imminent end of his relationship with Judy Collins.
When some school friends and I went to the local radio station the next week to host “Buena Beat,” a show that combined music with school announcements and general tomfoolery, we asked the gentleman running the board to play it for us. The station had not approved it for airing yet, so we listened to it inside the studio. In a world filled with three-minute songs, the 7-plus minute tune immediately attached itself to my memory. To this day I cannot hear it without singing along.
That was my first introduction to CS&N. By December of the next year, when Santa brought me a cassette player, the CSN&Y album “Déjà Vu” was the first tape in my collection. Of all the songs on that album, David Crosby’s “Almost Cut My Hair” has remained my favorite, possibly accounting for the length my hair has retained over the years.
Crosby’s debut solo album, “If I Could Only Remember My Name,” came out in early 1971, but I did not discover it until the latter part of 1972, by which time I was serving in the Air Force at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif. It has been a steady favorite, particularly the jams that kicked off the two sides and featured notable guests.
One line from “Cowboy Movie,” the second song on side one, became a motto and got plastered to the door of my room in the barracks on Kadena AB on Okinawa: “You know I’m crazy, but I ain’t real dumb.” My superiors in the military would certainly have begged to differ with me on that note.
Through the remainder of my Air Force duty and the return to Tucson for school at the University of Arizona, I continued to wander through the musical history of CS&N and somtimes Y. I discovered where they had all been prior to their gathering: the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies. I followed the threads to other bands, expanding my musical tastes and collection.
Somehow CS&N have remained near the top of my playlist, doubtless because they introduced me to so much of the contemporary music world. Thus the news of David Crosby’s death has been a deeply sad occasion. Along with his music, I identified with his struggles with addiction. When I saw them in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1985, David was absent from the stage for much of the evening.
By the time CS&N performed at Centennial Hall on the UA campus many years later, David and I had both managed to clean up our acts. And we enjoyed one last solo show at Tucson’s downtown Fox Theatre in the spring of 2016, before COVID shut down our access to live music.
Even David himself admitted at one point that he has been an asshole, which no doubt is one of the reasons the trio never got back together in recent years. But his talent was unquestionable, and I am grateful for all the enjoyment the music he and his colleagues have provided. Thanks to technology, that enjoyment will continue.
P.S.: The New York Times has published what it considers to be David Crosby’s “15 Essential Songs.”

SOLUTION AT Academic Writers Bay Question 2. Read the passage. Then answer the question. (10 points) The Next AdventureMalik had only a week’s notice when his mother’s transfer to the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, came through. He wasn’t sure if she had been given only a week’s notice, or if she’d just waited so long to tell him because she suspected that he would not take it well. As it happened, he didn’t take it well. He reminded her heatedly about his best friend Jamie’s sixteenth birthday party that was still a month away, and his own upcoming eligibility to acquire his driver’s license that summer. She had promised to take him for the test if he completed the driving safety course, which he had paid for just last week. But it didn’t matter what he said, because the professional movers were already there, and his mother wore the expression that told Malik he didn’t have the slightest chance, and that she was very busy with other matters. The first week in Japan was predictably atrocious. Malik’s mother came home every night with infuriating new suggestions for how he could spend his time—or, as he preferred to think of it, how he could pass his sentence. They wouldn’t be there forever. She encouraged him to visit the skate park and the jogging trails like he used to do at home, or that he meet the other kids his age at the pool before the weather closed it down. He didn’t want to know the others any more than he wanted to settle down in Okinawa, two million miles from where he belonged. He preferred to spend his time browsing social media and trading complaints with Jamie. He and Jamie had been friends for their entire lives, which was a foreign concept to most of the base kids Malik talked to when his mother did manage to get him to interact. Whenever he brought it up, they all launched into a game where they named the place they’d stayed the longest, and he felt like the outsider he knew he was. It was a whole month before Malik ever left the base. When he did, it was because his mother finally grew frustrated enough with his sullen behavior to force him out. She sent him with a colleague who volunteered to drive his son and some friends to a local museum. Malik didn’t even know the son, or any of the other guys. He only went because he knew he was pushing it with his mom lately, and she was the only person he regularly spoke to offline. That made it fairly uncomfortable when they weren’t speaking at all. The museum was actually kind of cool, even if Malik had no intention of telling his mother he had a good time. He purchased several souvenirs he knew Jamie would like. They had always enjoyed studying history together, so he knew the gifts would be better received than anything he could have picked out in the states. The guys in the carpool weren’t so bad either. They weren’t his friends from home, but they still had good senses of humor, and excellent stories, and Malik found himself laughing along on the way home. From there it all kind of unraveled as far as resistance went. Malik met up with the guys whenever he could do so without admitting to his mom he actually liked it. And then even that game grew old, so he just hung out whenever he wanted and paid no mind to her knowing smiles. Together, Malik and his new friends explored the whole island of Okinawa. They rode the monorail to all fifteen stations and found something compelling to do at each one, whether it was just walking around or seeing a film or eating somewhere—or something—interesting. Over the months, members of the group dropped off, transferred out with their parents. Others joined them, too. Gradually, Malik’s social media feed shifted from hometown news to an expansive collection of photos and stories from three or four continents at a time. One afternoon, eight months in, Malik found his mother sitting quietly in the kitchen. At first, he thought she was just relaxing from a long day, but eventually he realized it was something more.
She looked tired, but she also looked troubled. She didn’t meet his eyes, even when he nudged the letter laying in front of her with his knuckle. “Where are we going next?” he asked. She looked up at him, and he knew right away that he’d guessed right. He reached for the letter. “I hope it’s Germany,” he said. “Jake is there now, and he’s always posting about it.” Malik watched the tension leave his mother’s face. Honestly, he didn’t see what she was so worried about. He was more than ready for the next adventure. In “The Next Adventure,” how does Malik change from the time he finds out he’s moving to Japan to the end of the story? Use specific details and evidence from the text to support your response. Your response should be one to two complete paragraphs. Answer: Type your answer here. Question 3.(15 points)How does Malik relate with his mother in “The Next Adventure”? How do their interactions change over the course of the story? Use specific details and evidence from the text to support your response. Your response should be at least two complete paragraphs. Feb 4th, 1983 - RAF Mildenhall - RWY 11 - #17972 - Bredette B C Thomas and John Morgan 4 Hour Mission to Murmansk. Having been in Love with Planes all my life, building countless Lego planes, and reading Airplane books, at the age of 10 my father, Robert D Hall Jr (Photos) got a duty station with Lockheed at Mildenhall after doing 9 weeks at Beale, then 5 weeks at Mildenhall, 6 Weeks at Kadena, and Another 4 weeks back at Mildenhall, decided to stay at Mildenhall permanently, moved the whole family to England for 5.5 years.
on Feb 4th, 1983 He woke me up at 4am and quietly took me out of the house for a secret mission of our own. We drove to the base and we went to the main Det 4 Hanger (The one you have seen in many airshow photos) but in early 83 the U-2 was still there before moving to Alconbury. I was given a walk around the U-2 in the hangar. It must not have been a busy day since there was no-one in the hangar but myself and my dad and one other person. up close and personal with the U-2. I thought this was a great day of hooky from school, but the best was yet to come…..
We walked to the parking lot and onto the grass close to the taxi-way and he pointed across the runway to the hangar, where at that moment the ‘Blackbird’ was rolling out. My Father always had his camera with him, and started taking some shots while I watched the SR taxi out behind the hangar and wrap around to the end of the runway. We watched as all the pre-takeoff checks were performed by the ground crew. I waited with anticipation, but never expected the spectacular show I was about to see. We were only about a football field length away from the runway, and as the plane slowly started rolling forward, fuel streaking out the back of the plane, the afterburners lit and the air was suddenly filled with the sound of thunder. If you have ever tried to describe something to a person that they have never experienced themselves, then words would fail you. I can only describe a sound so loud and deep that it didn’t hurt your ears so much as it shook your body. You could feel it in your chest and if you could ever say that the experience touched your soul because you walk away with this profound sense of having come face to face with something you cannot describe or could only ever experience once or twice in a lifetime. Even at the age of 11 I felt that way, and look back on it as one of the top 5 experiences of my life.
As I was still getting over the thrill of the sound and sight of the afterburners, I watched as the Blackbird took-off and climbed, pulling up high and to the right ever so slightly, disappearing into a little black dot in less than half a minute , and thinking… that went by way.
Habubrats had the best opportunities. New photographs they are using that TEB to start the engines.🔥🔥

Cash For Cars: Uncover The Best Auto Salvage Professionals
There are a number of online stores which offer discounts year-round. You can take advantage of such offers. But one must verify the make, brand, color and suitability of such parts, especially if they are offered on heavy discount. sell used auto parts A 10 year old boy gets his step father to buy him large containers (100 pieces) of jawbreaker candies (called gobstoppers in some countries). They cost about $4.00 for the 100. He sells them in school to his classmates for 10 cents each. He does this every week during the school year. Found money or a small business?
Tumblr media
But do not worry, as the upside to collecting classic cars is that they could be bought cheap. The principle behind this is simple: since most of the classics are at least over 15 years old, some people who are not collectors will probably consider them as junk. And cars considered as junk mean a very low price. What they say is true: one man's trash is another man's treasure. There is a list of factors, which will determine how much you will get for your junk car. Such factors are car's model, age, condition, etc. Obviously, the more popular and reliable models, like Toyota or Honda would cost more, as a lot of people own such cars, which means that their parts will be in high demand. That is why salvage yards offer more cash for junk cars for money near me for this kind. junk cars near me In the neighborhood where I was staying I visited a grocery store, walked the streets, and finally found a small police station outside Kadena Air Base. They did not understand English, but they had a map. I said I was looking for a bank and they said "ginkou." I thought they said "banko." So sell used auto parts online said "yes, yes!" They did direct me to a bank thankfully. The ferry to Palm Island left every hour on the hour and returned to the mainland on the half-hour. The 20 minute ferry ride, dropped us off at Rum Bay Restaurant dock, where the first mate led us to a trolley car and preceded to take us to our condominium unit. The trolley made its trip around the island every hour also, so while getting on and off the island was very easy... it took about 45 minutes to get off.
