(Wrote this on a bit of whim. It’s some Katla/Nanu stuff as part of the OT4, and canon to their story. I’ve been more laissez faire with the games. Hope you enjoy!)
No secrets between us, Katla thought as she lingered at the doorway, watching the scene before her.
Kahuna Nanu had stretched his long body out along his blue couch, focused entirely on the tricks he was performing on his kendama, and not on the Alolan Meowth scattered about him - such as the three staring at the red ball, one slightly crouched as if debating whether to swat it.
It was a peaceful scene, and not one the trainer wanted to disturb, especially not with the topic she needed to discuss. It was easier to copy the Meowth and watch her lover’s skill instead.
That was until a soft ‘thump’ and the click of claws across a wooden floor drew Katla’s attention to the large Persian padding her way over, her curled tail lifting as she approached.
“Perr~” The Classy Cat announced softly, her headbutt knocking Katla back a step, a guttural purr rumbling out almost as soon as the trainer’s hand sunk into her thick grey coat.
“Hi Perla.” Katla murmured softly, stroking down her muscled back as the feline rubbed past her.
“There a reason you’re hiding back there, Kat?” Nanu asked, the sound of his kendama slowing.
Katla took a breath. You gotta do it. You can’t leave him out of the loop. Perla chirruped, looking up at her expectantly.
“No, not really.” The trainer said, stepping out of the doorway. “Just thinking.”
The kahuna’s red gaze shifted to her as soon as she came into view, Perla padding past her. He said nothing, the only sound being the clack of ball and cup.
“I need to tell you something. From my past.”
Clack.
The silence ticked on for a couple of seconds, his face inscrutable as ever. She would never challenge him to a game of poker.
“You don’t have to listen right now if you don’t want,” she said eventually. “I-I didn’t want to disturb you-”
Nanu sat up, scattering his small feline audience as he swung his legs down and causing a loaf-Meowth further down the couch to glare at him.
“Sit with me, Kat,” he said, although it was more an order than a suggestion.
She felt his stare follow her as she settled next to him. It made her slightly uneasy, and yet it also didn’t. Perhaps it was just a by-product of him being a police officer.
The trainer took a breath. Here we go.
“You know I started out with my Pokemon in Hoenn, right?”
“Yeah. Born in Galar, registered in Hoenn,” he said, winding the string around the kendama’s handle. “I remember.”
Katla smiled briefly - of course he did.
“Great. Uh, I know this is kinda out of left field, but do you remember there being a big storm in Hoenn about ten years ago or so? Had something to do with a Team Aqua?”
Nanu's steady gaze didn’t shift from her, but she did notice a crease appear between his thick eyebrows.
“I remember that name,” he began, sentence hanging for a moment before he looked away. “Some gang of pirates?”
“I guess?” Katla scratched her head. “They certainly dressed the part. But they’d graduated into eco-terrorists when I met them.”
The kahuna’s eyes slid back to her, his eyebrow arching.
“What is it with you kids and taking on criminal gangs that would make most adults think twice? Although,” a smirk pulled at the corner of his lips, “you don’t seem to know what danger is.”
Katla rolled her eyes.
“Ha ha, very funny, Officer.” She blew out a sigh through her nose. “If I’m honest, I would have preferred to avoid them. I was just a little kid on her first adventure with Pokemon, I didn’t need...I didn’t need what came next.”
Her gaze drifted to Perla, now lying on the window sill, oblivious to the two smaller Meowth playfully batting at her hanging tail as it swayed back and forth.
“They said they wanted to expand the oceans to make more homes for water-type Pokemon,” Katla continued, interrupted by an amused snort. “Yeah, that was my reaction too. The oceans are big enough without help. Anyway, in order to do that, they decided to find and awaken Kyogre.”
“It’s been a long time since I last went to Hoenn, but isn’t Kyogre one of the Pokemon deities there?” The kahuna asked, one eyebrow arched.
“Yeah, Kyogre is the God of the Sea.” The trainer sighed. “They thought they could control it. You can imagine how well that went.”
"Hmm.” She felt Nanu’s gaze linger on her. “So, where did you come in?”
Katla managed to suck in a breath, her heart beginning to beat a fast tattoo.
“There is a place called the Cave of Origins, said to be where life began. It contains a power that could cause something called Primal Reversion. Basically, Kyogre went to claim that power and become every bit as much as of a God as the legends make it out to be.” She explained. “The plan was for someone to intercept and defeat it whilst it was still just a powerful Pokemon and not ‘the Almighty’.”
She finally turned to meet Nanu’s eyes. “That someone was me.”
There was a long, long pause.
“An eleven year old girl.” The kahuna spoke slowly. “Hoenn had a Champion back then, didn’t they?”
“Yeah, Steven...Stone? He was there, he helped me get permission to enter the Cave. But I went in alone.”
Nanu said nothing, but she sensed his mood turn in an instant, his jaw tightening and the crease reappearing between his brows. She realized then that she’d never seen Ula’Ula’s kahuna truly angry. Annoyed, irritated and sometimes upset - nothing that held a candle to this. Even the Meowth were now eyeing their patron warily, ears twitching.
She felt uneasy about continuing her story, but they’d gotten this far:
“I...I didn’t make it in time, either. I had front row seats to see Kyogre attain its Primal form.”
Suddenly Nanu was on his feet, striding away with his back straight, sending Meowth skittering away in his wake. Perla lifted her head, her ears folding backwards as she watched her trainer.
The kahuna stared at a point outside, letting the uneasy silence drag on until a single, cold word passed his lips:
“Alone?”
Katla swallowed.
“Yeah. I just had my Pokemon with me. No-one could get to where I was anyway-”
“You shouldn’t have even been there.”
Nanu’s words were fiercely sharp - she had been subject to his taunting barbs during his Grand Trial, but these threatened to draw blood.
He kept his back to her, the only indicators of his expression being his clenched fists and every inch of his full height.
“The Champion - the strongest trainer in Hoenn. But won’t take on a deity Pokemon - instead palms it off on a child. A child that he didn’t even back up.”
There was a sharp intake of breath, his shoulders lifting. One second, two, three, and his breath hissed out again, relaxing. His fists uncurled, fingers flexing. It took another couple of seconds before Nanu could speak again.
“I guess you must’ve won, since you’re here to tell the tale.”
“Yeah.” Katla glanced away, forcing her voice not to peter out into a mumble. “I almost didn’t, though. Primal Kyogre was so powerful, the only reason I managed it is because of Latias. I befriended her when I rescued her from being harassed by Team Aqua thugs, and she joined my team in thanks.”
The trainer took a breath. “When she was Mega Evolved, she was strong enough to at least take a few hits from it. More than what could be said about me.”
Katla shrugged off her black and red jersey, revealing the whorls and stretched scars that patterned her forearms. Time had faded them, but they were still as clear as the day they’d healed.
“Kyogre’s Origin Pulse attack was so powerful that its energy scorched my skin. Most people mistake them for fire burns, but those who specialise in Fire types can tell the difference.”
“I did wonder about them, our first night.” She glanced up to see Nanu standing over her, his expression back to its apathetic default. But his crimson eyes were soft, almost hurt. “Knew better than to ask, though.”
“Thank you.” She ran her hands up her arms, the skin crawling under his gaze. “I would have lied to you anyway.”
“Figured as much.” He dropped to a crouch, studying the marked flesh. “Same as Kabu and his undershirt, then.”
“Kinda. I think that’s more because his scars aren’t pretty, though.” A wry smile pulled at Katla’s lips as the kahuna snorted derisively. “I just...don’t want to answer the awkward questions.”
“Hmm.” His eyes met hers, and it seemed like he wanted to say something, his jaw working. Then he looked back down at her arm. “Uh, they don’t look great - must’ve hurt like hell. You get any pain from them now?”
“Sometimes.” The trainer nodded. “They usually react to powerful or legendary Pokemon.”
“Hm?” Nanu’s eyebrow arched.
“Yeah. When Tapu Bulu appeared in our Grand Trial, I felt my scars tingle. When they use their powers, they tend to hurt.”
The kahuna pulled back slightly.
“Wait. If that’s the case with the Tapu, then the same must have happened with Eternatus.”
“Mmhmm.” Katla nodded. “And the legendary dogs. But Eternatus was the worst. Especially whatever unholy Dynamax it turned into - as soon it started attacking, it was agony.” Her arms prickled at the memory. “I managed to hide it from Hop, but it hurt so much-”
“Hey hey, enough of that.” Nanu rumbled softly, shifting closer, hand hesitantly moving to rest on her shoulder. There was a moment or two of silence before he spoke again: “So. You defeated the God of the Sea with the help of an Eon Pokemon. Now I understand what Kabu meant when he said it wasn’t your first rodeo.”
“He told you?” She looked up at him with alarm.
“No. He let it slip that Eternatus and Zacian weren’t the first legendaries you’d encountered.” The kahuna smirked, rising back up to his relaxed stoop. “Clammed up tighter than a Cloyster and told me it was something I’d have to ask you about.” He tilted his head, smirk becoming a smile. “Figured it was better to let you open up about it on your own time.”
She couldn’t help but smile back.
“Thanks, Nanu. I’ve told him and Stela about what happened, and I couldn’t leave you out of the loop.”
“That’s kind of you, but you didn’t have to,” he said, sitting back down beside her. A Meowth cautiously approached him, sniffing his hand.
“I didn’t want there to be any secrets between us.” The trainer explained. “And mine is...kinda important.”
The small feline purred loudly as Nanu scratched its cheek, its other fellows beginning to cluster around them again.
“I see...” His murmur was so quiet Katla almost missed it. After a long silence, she spoke again:
“So yeah. Eleven years old and I’d fought and beaten a deity Pokemon at full power. And all I got were these lousy scars and nightmares for the rest of my life.” Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Nanu’s expression get decidedly sour. The Meowth hopped down from his lap. “Then I went and became the Champion.”
His gaze snapped to hers, eyebrows arching up almost to his hairline.
“Say again.”
“Several weeks after the Kyogre incident, I challenged the Elite 4 and Steven. And won.”
The kahuna just stared at her, surprise clearly written over his face, yet the trainer had a feeling he was turning things over in his head - he was looking through her, not at her.
“Before you ask, no. I’m not Hoenn’s Champion any more. I gave it up after a while.” She sighed, resting her arms on her knees and staring at her boots. “It was all...all so quick. First Kyogre, then somehow I was the Champ, then the meteor, and it was all so much, too much-”
“Hey. Take it easy.” Nanu spoke, his voice quiet and steady. There was soft ‘shff’ of fabric as he scooted closer. “You weren’t much older, were you?”
“No, still eleven.”
Another breath hissed out of his nose.
“Guessing no-one helped you for those, either.”
“Not... not really.” Katla met the eyes of a particularly petite Meowth that came to sit between her feet. “I mean, Steven was there, but he was more directing me where to go, leaving a list of things I had to do. Not really...doing anything to help.” The Meowth made a sound almost akin to a beep, reaching up to her. The trainer reached down to pet it, making sure to avoid its charm. “The only ‘people’ that helped me were my Pokemon...”
A quietness fell between them, filled only with soft purring and the beginnings of rain on the Police Station roof.
“Kat,” Nanu’s voice was softer than she’d ever heard it, and she glanced up to him. There was a naked vulnerability to his face that made her heart skip in surprise. “You do have parents, right?”
Her brows furrowed for a moment.
“Yeah, I do, I thought I...told you...” She trailed off, hearing the real question underneath it. It took her aback for a moment, taking the Meowth’s insistent headbutt to bring her back.
“I do, I do - they do care for me, a-and they did their best. This- this isn’t one of those stories.” A quick glance at Nanu and the creases deepening in his forehead showed he disagreed. “They love me, they do. They just...I mean, what’s the manual for helping your kid deal with all...all of that?”
He grunted.
“Take your word for it.”
A part of Katla bristled, yet she let the anger ebb. No point quibbling now, after the wounds had been made and healed. Mostly.
“What’s this about a meteor?” He asked, mercifully pivoting away from the previous subject.
“The giant meteor over ten years ago? Was gonna smack into the planet and ruin everyone’s day?” She arched an eyebrow at him.
“Oh, that one.” Nanu leaned back, crossing his legs. His own eyebrow raised in a mirror to hers. “Didn’t know you were involved in that too.”
“Yeah, well.” Katla snorted. “I thought saving the world was kinda a Champion’s job.”
“Can hardly you blame you for thinking otherwise, considering your predecessor.” Nanu drawled. His gaze lingered on her, his eyes twitching slightly back and forth. “Better or worse than Kyogre?”
“Better. I mean, this time the Pokemon wasn’t actively trying to kill me. But it still wanted a Pokemon battle.” She crossed her arms over her knees, watching the Meowth curl around her feet.
“Long story short, apparently this meteor had been foretold by an ancient group of people called the Draconids. They said the only way to stop it was to summon Rayquaza - the Hoenn deity of the Sky - and petition it to destroy it.”
“Wait, how is this different from Team Aqua summoning Kyogre?” Nanu asked. “Maybe they’re asking more politely, but you’re still asking a god to do your bidding.”
“I think the difference is in what was asked of them.” She explained. “That, and Kyogre was asleep.” She arched an eyebrow at the older man. “Sure you can relate to that - woken up in the middle of deep sleep and then just ordered to do something, no ‘please’ or ‘thank you’."
“Yeah. No wonder it acted out.” The older man grumbled, scratching the back of his neck. “Still, what made them so sure Rayquaza would listen to them anyway?”
”According to the legends, it has form - if a prayer to it can be amplified by some powerful artifact or location, it tends to respond. Unlike the other two Hoenn deities, Rayquaza has a closer connection to humanity. Mostly because it seems to be the only Pokemon than can get Groudon and Kyogre to stop fighting each other.”
“Huh.” Nanu leaned back. “Well, considering we’re still here, I’m guessing you succeeded?”
“Pretty much.” Katla nodded. “Got to Sky Pillar, called Rayquaza. It answered, I somehow beat it in a battle and it went and destroyed the meteor. World saved. Again.” She sighed, gaze drifting to where Perla was dozing on the window sill.
“I quit not long after that. People were insisting I stay on, or that they couldn’t believe I wanted to walk away, but...I was a mess. The nightmares, flashbacks, I-I couldn’t even look at dark water without-”
“Hey hey hey.” Nanu murmured, sliding an arm around her shoulders. “You did the right thing. Lot of people talk as if they know your mind better than you do.”
“Yeah. It was as if everything that happened to me wasn’t a big deal or anything.” She leant into him, resting her head against his chest. The slow, comforting boom of his heart was soothing, as was the kahuna’s gentle, almost furtive petting of her hair.
He hummed his agreement, the sound rumbling through his body. A couple of seconds of silence ticked by, the Meowth settling around them before he spoke again.
“I appreciate you opening up about this, Kat. Lot of things make much more sense now.”
A wan smile pulled at her lips.
“Suppose they do.” She looked up at him, her heart skipping a beat when she noticed he was watching her. “Thanks for listening to me vent, too.”
“I meant what I said last time. I’m here for you, just as much as Stela or Kabu.” His gaze was intense, not shifting even for a second. “I like a heads-up when you can give it, but don’t feel like you can’t come to me with things.” He gently brushed a lock of curly hair off her cheek. “I know I’m not the most...easy to get along with. But I care for you, Kat.” He opened his mouth to say more, but closed it again, shaking his head. “Wish you didn’t go through what you did.”
“Thanks.” She replied. “Could have done without the reprise in Galar, but here we are.”
“Mmm.” Nanu hummed, frowning for a moment. “You’ve got some nerve, though, going straight into the fray after all that. I thought you trying to scale Po Town’s walls was reckless enough.”
Katla lifted a shoulder.
“Had to be me. Didn’t want someone else to suffer the same things I went through. Besides,” a smile pulled at her lips, “this time I wasn’t alone. I had Hop with me.”
"And Kabu.” The kahuna murmured.
“Yeah...” She nodded, letting her mind wander back to a different time, a different place. Yet she’d been in much the same position, nestled against the chest of a man she loved as she’d tried to come to terms with what just happened.
“You’re not alone any more.” Nanu spoke, voice rumbling against her. “We won’t let that happen to you again.” His arm tightened around her for just a second.
The sound of the rainstorm filled the silence between them, before a Meowth yowled impatiently.
“Cripes, you can’t be hungry already?” Nanu groaned, answered by chorus of meows and one elegant ‘Perr~’. “Alright, alright. I’m coming, you bottomless pits.” He flashed Katla a weak smile before he got up, somehow managing to summon every Meowth in the station to cluster around his ankles within two steps. Perla joined them, albeit at a more sedate pace, taking the time to stretch luxuriously after descending from her perch.
Left alone for the moment, the trainer leaned back against the couch, letting out a deep breath. Thank Arceus. That went better than I expected.

Katla’s Centiskorch (sometimes called Centi so not to mix her up with Kabu’s Centiskorch) is pretty chill normally, and whilst is very physically affectionate, she’s usually perceptive enough to give people their space if they’re uncomfortable with her (she is a giant bug who can set fire to things, after all).
She’s also very loving and protective of Kat, which can get her into trouble as Centi gets pretty hostile in her defence of her trainer.
This led to some amusing misunderstandings when it came to Kat and Nanu flirting, especially since Kat will sometimes deliberate tease or wind Nanu up make him threaten to ‘punish’ her - in very amorous ways. However, since Kat sometimes reacts with ‘fear’ when he corners her, Centi initially misinterpreted this when they forgot she was in the same room as them.
Thus leading to Nanu coming eye-to-eye with an angry Centiskorch.
Nanu stared back, completely nonplussed by the fact her fiery antenna were so close he could feel the heat from them. They stayed like that for a couple of seconds, before a: ‘Perrrowl~’ sounded out and Nanu asked, in his normal deadpan tone: “Remind me, Kat - how weak are Centiskorch to Rock type moves?”
“Uh, very.” The younger trainer glanced over, and saw Perla’s forehead gem was glowing.
“...Might wanna call off your noodle before she gets squashed, then.”
Centi quickly backed off at this, and Perla rapidly bapped her on the head for threatening her kahuna. They make sure to keep her somewhere else when doing amorous activities such as that in the future.
(That said, Centi learns quickly that Nanu and Kat are only playing, and later starts staring at Nanu when he’s ‘busy’ to try and distract him. She also starts playing this game with Kabu, much to his chagrin. Especially when *his* Centiskorch decides to copy his mate, so now there’s two Centiskorch staring, trying to throw them off their game.)

One thing I love about Katla and Nanu’s dynamic is that they both sense the trauma that each other has, although Nanu clocked that Kat had some much faster than she did (she got a vibe from him, but it took longer for her to go: ‘ah that’s why’). It has taken time and work, but now they can sense if one of them isn’t themselves.
Kat will pare down her mischievous behaviour, speaking seriously and gently to Nanu, and only important questions/statements. She’ll give him his space and runs diversions so he can have his time to himself (she already runs occasional interference to let him nap). If he just wants to sleep, she’ll take care of the Meowth and his Pokemon.
Thanks to his Interpol and cop training, Nanu can often sense when Kat’s mood changes have shifted from ‘playful’ to ‘depressed’, and he’s usually the first person to notice she’s having a bad time. “Doing okay, Kat?” is his opening gambit, which often gets to the core of the problem as she opens up. If he notices she’s having a flashback, Nanu will calmly (yet firmly) speak to her to get her to refocus and remember where she is.
He only shows his gentleness to Kat behind closed doors, often holding her close and stroking her hair to comfort her. He’s often at his most tender to her here (the only other time is when he’s giving her aftercare), revealing that he loves her deeply, even if he doesn’t show it as readily as she does.
They never push the other to open up, letting them do it in their own time, although Nanu knows just the right buttons to push to get Kat to open up about whatever’s currently bothering her, whilst Kat just gives Nanu reassurance and then leaves him be.

Random stuff about Katla ‘cos I’m depressed about going to work tomorrow
- She has a thing about Nanu’s eyes (I mean, who can blame her?), which Nanu either hasn’t noticed or just hasn’t taken full advantage of yet; Kat can find it hard to break eye contact with him, which becomes next to impossible if he’s...in control.
- Her and Acerola have a sisterly relationship; Kat often tells Ace stories about the myths and legends in other regions, and occasionally they go ghost hunting together (usually with Stela in tow)
- She and Guzma have an ‘enemies-to-tolerating’ relationship. He has a grudge for her beating him in a battle on his home turf, Kat thinks he’s a twat. However, over time they’ve mellowed, and whilst they’d prefer not to associate with one another, they can be in the same room without Nanu having to make disapproving noises at them.
- Kat can be very cautious around trainers and Pokemon she knows are powerful, but at the same time will go gadding into an organisation’s base to rough people up (thankfully for Kabu, Nanu and Stela, Kat has eased up on this tendency).
- Despite being Galar’s champion, she prefers not to draw attention to herself. Unless the trainer she’s battling against is being particularly bratty, then she’ll let them have it.
- She’s currently closest to her Centiskorch, who is very, very affectionate to her trainer and others she likes. Kat often has to tell Centi to give people their space.
- However, Centi was one of the Pokemon who fought and defeated Leon, and can turn in an instant from being a cuddle bug to someone’s worst nightmare, especially if/when Kat is threatened or hurt.
- Kabu wakes earlier than Kat to go out for his jog near sunrise, but always makes sure to give her a kiss before he leaves. It’s very rare that she can convince him to miss a day.
- (That said, if she’s with Stela and or Nanu, they have much better luck convincing the Man of Fire to take it easy for a morning. For a while, at least.)

Me: Katla's not allowed any legendary Pokemon, because that'd be too overpowered
Me: Except Galar Moltres because it'd be really funny to see Nanu's reaction

in the rain and longing?
(...I have the perfect pairing for this. Non-canon.)
“Why are you back here, Kat?” The gruff voice of Ula’Ula’s Kahuna sounded out through the pouring rain. “Thought you went back to Galar.”
“I did.” Katla sighed, letting the water slowly soak into her hair and clothes. She’d long since past caring what she looked like to others. “Things got...complicated, so I’m back here. For a bit.”
Nanu grunted, his eternal apathetic mask well in place even as his crimson eyes bored into her. He stood on the Police Station’s porch, but she made no effort to join him.
“Is that what you do, missy?” He said, eventually. “Run when things start to get ‘complicated’?”
The trainer bristled at that, and she opened her mouth - the words died on her lips when she remembered what she had left behind. Twice over, now. Katla closed her mouth, glanced away.
“Yeah.” She finally admitted. “Guess it is.” A pause. “I’m sorry, Kahuna. I’m taking up too much of your time.” The Galar woman turned to leave.
“Kat.”
Nanu’s voice stopped her, as did the sound of his sandals getting closer. When he didn’t immediately continue, she glanced back to see the older man at the threshold, the rain dripping from the roof missing his nose by mere centimetres. His expression hadn’t changed very much, but there was something...sympathetic in his eyes. Almost...sad?
“I didn’t intend to run from you,” she said, making sure to meet his eyes, so he could see her sincerity. “I...I thought we could just...have a night together and then just leave. I didn’t think that...I didn’t think that...I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
A half-chuckle lifted from him, and he lifted a shoulder in a tired shrug.
“Yeah, yeah. Take advantage of a desperate old man and then just leave like nothing ever happened.”
“No!” Katla cried, before heat shot into her face. "I-! ...Fuck, I didn’t...I didn’t mean it that way...” She trailed off. But...that’s what I did, didn’t I? She buried her face in her hands, feeling tears begin to burn at her eyes. “Gods, Nanu...I’m so sorry...”
“I’ve missed you, Kat,” he said softly. “Been trying to put you out of my mind ever since you left.”
She sucked in a shuddering breath, trying to hold back her emotions and only partially succeeding.
“I-I’ve been busy, what with the move and everything, a-and my Gym Challenge in Galar, but...” Katla took another breath, trying to straight her back and not collapse into a depressed heap. “You always came back to me, in the quiet moments. I wanted...I wanted to text, to say something...But, but I didn’t know if you’d even want to hear from me. Fuck, Nanu, I’m sorry...”
The slap of sandal against soggy grass made her look up to see the Kahuna padding over to her, stopping inches from her now sodden form.
“Kat...” For the first time since the young woman had known him, Nanu’s voice was uncertain, perhaps almost pleading? “You’re going to stay a little while this time?”
She swallowed hard.
“I have to go back to Galar at some point, Nanu. I’m sorry, I have some leave to be here for the moment, but I can’t stop my Gym Challenge-”
He shook his head.
“I know that. I want to know if I’m just a booty call for you or-”
“No!” It was her turn to shake her head, this time vigorously. “No! I’m not using you for the sex. I mean it, I really mean it.” Her blue eyes met his red, hoping he could see that she was sincere through them. “I missed you, Nanu. I’ll...I’ll stay as long as you want me to.”
Ula’Ula’s Kahuna appeared to breath a sigh of relief, before he gently cupped the Galar woman’s cheek, pressing a kiss to her lips. It was soft and lingering, quite unlike the other kisses Katla and Nanu had shared before, full of so much emotion that she didn’t even what to think of right now.
When they finally pulled away, the Galar trainer felt a little breathless, probably due to the lump that had formed in her throat. Especially since Nanu’s expression had softened somewhat. He glanced over her, before a half-smile pulled at his lips.
“You're more soaked than our last night together. C’mon missy, let’s get you out of this rain.” He commented, beckoning her to follow.
Despite his crassness, Katla couldn’t help but laugh, and the weight finally, finally lifted.

(Wrote this on a whim, hope you like it.)
Katla woke with a start, mind racing and heart pounding, a weak cry knotting in her throat. She was greeted by darkness and quiet and warmth, and it took a moment for her to take stock in her surroundings.
No, she wasn’t on the top of Hammerlocke’s tower, standing alone in the midst of a cataclysm, unable to move as a Pokemon of great and terrible power loomed over her.
She was in Ula’Ula’s Police Station’s bed, sandwiched between three warm, sleeping bodies, safe and secure. Katla rubbed her eyes, holding back her sigh. Another nightmare. She glanced quickly down at her three lovers, reassured that they hadn’t seemed to have stirred with her awakening.
Whilst she should just lie back down and try to go back to sleep, the young trainer didn’t want to risk getting sucked back into her memories. So, with practiced care, she shimmied out from under the covers, and gently, carefully slid her way down and off the end of the bed. She checked back again, before she squeezed out through the bedroom door.
The moon was bright this night, helping Katla make her way through the hallway to the main room of the station, avoiding the slumbering bundles of Meowth that dotted the floor and other surfaces. It wouldn’t be long before one of them noticed her presence and tried to unsuccessfully wrangle a midnight feast out of her.
As she made her way to the couch, hoping she could find a place to sit for a while, a large shape lifted its head from it, uttering a deep, guttural purr.
“Hi Perla.” Katla murmured, voice thick from sleep. “Can I sit by you? Had a bad night.”
The Persian very obligingly shifted her paws and head out of the way to let the Galar trainer sit, before she rested them on top of her lap, her purrs rumbling into her. Katla sank her hands into the cat’s thick, soft fur, feeling her tension slowly bleed away. For about the fifth time, she gave silent thanks to Perla - she wasn’t quite sure how she’d earned her friendship and respect, yet the Classy Cat had paid her over more than she could count.
Katla leaned back into the couch, absently petting Perla and staring at a sliver of moonlight through one of the station windows. She was considering closing her eyes and trying to sleep here when a deep voice sounded out:
“Had another one, Spitfire?”
The trainer jumped a little, turning her head to see a pair of red eyes gleaming out of the darkness, then the stooped figure they were attached to. She sighed softly.
“Yeah. Bad one.” She replied, looking away. “I’m sorry, Nanu.”
“Don’t apologize.” He replied, shuffling towards the kitchenette, a Meowth uttering a quiet ‘mya?’ as they noticed him. “Tapu Cocoa?”
“Yeah, sure.”
After a minute and several various ways Nanu told his Meowth that ‘no, they weren’t getting fed in the middle of the night’, the Kahuna made his way over the couch, setting the two steaming mugs on the table opposite. Perla gracefully moved aside, letting her trainer sit next to Katla, the Meowth clustering around them, eyeing the older man with pleading eyes.
“Thanks.”
“Mmm.” Nanu grunted, leaning back and stretching his legs out, ignoring his audience.
There was a long moment of silence between them, filled only by the Meowth sulkily breaking off to return to their naps. It was a pleasant quiet - neither trainer nor Kahuna needed to say anything to fill it, especially since this wasn’t the first time they’d been here.
“Still feel bad for waking you.” Katla finally murmured.
“I wake if a Cutiefly sneezes.” He replied. “If you feel that bad about it, then cover for me tomorrow.”
A smile managed to pull at her lips.
“You know I do that for you anyway.”
“Well then, I can’t help you.” He lifted a shoulder. “Seriously Kat, if anyone knows what it’s like, it’s me. Don’t worry about it. Look after yourself.”
“I know. I just...”
“Kat, do you really think Stela or Sparks would be even the slightest bit mad that you’re doing this?” Nanu’s sharp black eyebrow arched up at her.
“Well...no-”
“Then there’s your answer.” He leaned forward, taking his mug with one hand, and waving with the other. “Don’t start. We’re all in agreement. Just sit here and get your mind off it.”
Katla opened her mouth to protest, but Nanu silenced her with a look. She sighed, taking her own mug. It warmed her hands, soothing her, though it could have just as easily have been the presence next to her.
“You can sleep here, if you like.” He spoke softly. “I’ll stay.”
She blinked up at him.
“Are, are you sure?”
“I wouldn’t offer otherwise.” He replied, stretching out an arm. “C’mere.”
Katla shifted in close to the Kahuna’s side, resting her head on his shoulder. He was taller than her, and although bigger than the slim trainer, he was still fairly lean, yet that didn’t seem to matter when she was tucked up next to him.
“Thank you, Nanu.” She whispered.
“You’re welcome, Kitty-Kat.” Was his reply somewhere in her thick brown curls, and she couldn’t help a smile at the affectionate nickname. I love you, she thought, hoping her would know by the way she nuzzled into his chest, listening to the sound of his heart.

The main thing Katla and Nanu argue about is whether Stunky/Skuntank counts as a cat or not.
Katla: Look at this face and tell me this is not a kitty!
Nanu: That is not a cat and never will be a cat.
Katla: It’s part Dark type, come onnnn
Nanu: So is Incineroar and you know my feelings on those.
Katla: Okay, put aside your own feelings for a moment, look at this Pokemon, and tell me-
Nanu: It’s not a cat.
Katla: NANU I SWEAR TO ARCEUS

A thought:
Nanu seeing a Galarian Meowth, then glancing over to Katla and being like: ‘well, this explains a lot’.
(He loves his little fuzzy gremlin. He thinks the Meowth look pretty cute too.)

Thinking of the OT4, I love how Stela and Kabu are refined, cultured people. Have romantic dates and come home to a glass of wine and maybe some tender love-making.
Meanwhile Katla and Nanu are just two chaotic trash gremlins snarking at each other, probably playing video games, winding each other up until they end up snogging, tearing each others’ clothing off and having a dirty shag on the couch.
And yet Stela/Kabu can get very, ah, messy at times, especially when they’re both raring to go. Nanu’s tender side comes out with Kat more than he’d ever admit (if he woke first after that couch shag, he would certainly carry her to bed, cradled in his arms), and sometimes they just like to be together, curled up together with the Meowth and Persian.

Did I ever update people on Katla’s new relationship status? No, I don’t think so.
Okay so you know how Katla was originally going to shack up with Kabu? WELL. She’s still shacked up with him.
And Nanu. Yes, that one.
And a beautiful Ghost-type trainer called Stela, owned by @den-of-tigers.
And they’re shacked up with each other. And now Katla and Kabu too. Yes, it’s an OT4, and they’re a big happy, sassy family.
So, yeah. Sometimes a family is a smol spitfire gremlin, a hot grandpa in shorts, a tol ghost beauty, a grumpy cat man and their tiny mischievous ghost daughter.

Firestarter
(Technically a continuation of this little fic I wrote, this fic is actually a mashed together RP me and @den-of-tigers did together, featuring my OC Katla having her Grand Trial versus Den’s excellent Nanu - seriously I can’t take credit for 98% of Nanu here, it’s all her!
We merged anime and game rules together for this and did dice rolls for certain outcomes. The dice apparently had a sense of drama. Hope you enjoy!)
"Aww shit." Katla cursed. There it was, in black and white - the latest boat to Melemele Island had set sail ten minutes ago, and the next wasn't for an hour. "I knew I should have just beaned my ass down here instead of getting breakfast."
The trainer huffed softly to herself, folding her arms. She had been hoping to go and explore Poni Island for more Pokemon, but the endorsements of the three previous island’s Kahunas were needed, and Ula’Ula’s was missing. And was staying missing.
Turned out that the Kahuna had been the police officer who let her into Po Town in the first place, like she had been suspecting. If he'd not mentioned his status, Katla assumed it was for a very good reason, and she would leave him alone. That is, if she could get a boat back to Melemele...
"Well, I guess I can chill in the gardens for a while." She mused to herself. "Find a quiet spot and do some meditation. It'll pass the time, at least." She turned away from the postings and began to walk back into the city, her mind turning inward as she strode quickly through the streets.
"Hey, missy - thinking of heading back to Melemele?”
It took a minute for her to realize someone was speaking to her, and when she did, Katla froze, one foot swinging uselessly above the ground for a second. That voice!
The young woman shifted her weight, pivoting on her heel to face the police officer now formally known as Nanu, Kahuna of Ula’Ula. He seemed slightly less intimidating in the bright light of day, leaning against a malasada shop wall with one in his hand, but so did a lone Wishiwashi.
“I was,” she said evenly. “Kahuna.”
“Ah, so you caught on.” Nanu commented. “I figured you would eventually - usually Acerola pulls some stunt, hides my kendama and won’t give it back until I cave. She thinks it's just a toy... then again, she's a kid.” His crimson eyes came to rest on her, a glint within them. “You're not."
Katla wasn’t exactly sure to make of this turn of personality, but she wasn’t going to look a Mudsdale in the mouth.
“I...had an inkling, what with your Z crystal and ring and all,” she gestured. “But it was Acerola who confirmed it for me.”
“Hmm. So, we come to the million-pokédollar question, missy,” one of Nanu’s thick eyebrows arched upwards. “You think you're ready for my Grand Trial?"
Katla chewed her lip. Her gut churned warily, and it hadn’t led her astray yet. However...
“I don’t think you’d be asking me if you didn’t think I was at least passable.” She replied, choosing her words with care. “I dare say I can give it a fair shot.” It’s either that or sit in Malie’s gardens for an hour.
“You’re not wrong on either of those counts.” Nanu replied, after having taken a sizeable bite of his malasada, chewing and swallowing.
"Lots of responsibilities being Ula'ula's Kahuna and its head security officer, besides. I'm sure you can understand why I'd appreciate a nap or being left the hell alone now and then," he added. Another bite of malasada, then another, and it was gone.
"Maybe I'm a little too lazy sometimes. Depends on who you ask," Nanu chuckled, shrugging one shoulder. "Regardless, you did a damn fine job in Po Town, and those kids are thrilled to have their stolen Pokemon back.”
Katla smiled weakly, lifting a shoulder.
“Ah, heh, I’m glad. Least I could do for them.”
“In my Trial, it's one of your Pokemon against three of mine, in turn. If you're not serious about it, don't waste my time." Those dark red eyes were indeed serious, his gruff tone equally so.
The trainer’s eyebrow arched.
“That’s...different.” She commented, feeling a part of her balk at it. We're not gonna get through this are you nuts? And yet...Katla's eyes traced over the Kahuna, sizing him up. What's the worst that could happen? We lose? Big woop. At least Kukui's not gonna bother you with an excuse like that.
"I like a bit of a change," she said, a smile pulling at the corner of her lips. "I accept, on the condition I get a chance to choose my Pokemon, and we find a better place for a scrap away from an audience."
Nanu snorted, crumpling the empty bag between both hands and tossing it into a nearby trash receptacle.
"Of course you get to choose which Pokemon you use, what did you think I was gonna do?  Make you juggle the balls and use the first one dropped? Although..." He looked to be thinking that suggestion over intensely, then laughed under his breath. "As for a better place to do things, I think I know one."  A 'follow-me' gesture with one hand, and the Kahuna began to walk off, shoving both hands in his pockets.
Katla rolled her eyes, falling into step with the older man.
"Yeah, the reason I said that, Kahuna, is because I have more than six. And if you're gonna make me run a gauntlet like that, I'm damn well gonna pick my best shot," she said. "You can watch me pick 'em out if you want, but all that it will do is make me fall down in your estimations. I'm not hiding Rayquaza up my sleeve or anything." She arched her eyebrow. "Not like I was exactly prepared for you to come to me."
"I might have the knack for showing up when it's least expected." He flashed her a grin.
"Yeah, I noticed that." Katla replied dryly.
After a brief stop off at the Pokemon Centre, trainer and Kahuna reached their destination in Route 11 without much small talk. It was an area of plenty of space, hard ground and no tall grass to worry about. Nodding in satisfaction, the Kahuna reached to his back pocket and pulled out his Rotom-phone, glancing over to Katla as she strolled over to her side of the ‘arena’.
"One of your Pokemon, versus three of mine. You ready?"
"Yup. We keep going until one of us has no usable Pokemon remaining." She lifted up the hem of her hoodie, reaching to her belt to undo the straps that attached her colourful assortment of Pokeballs to it. "And to make sure I won't even have a sliver of temptation..." She took the first Pokeball out, and walked several paces away to set the others down. She knew that they could come to her if called, but Katla didn't want them too close, just in case. Just stay in there, please.
She returned to her original position, single ball in hand, feeling almost naked without the comforting weight of the rest of her team around her waist. She pressed the button, the Pokeball swelling to fill her hand. "Ready when you are, Kahuna." As ready as I'll ever be.
He nodded, content with her response.
"Rotom, gonna need you on live recording mode," he said, at which the phone Pokemon buzzed to life, neon-blue eyes glowing brightly.
"Affirmative, Nanu!  Switching to live recording mode... begin recording, now!"
A quick, short clearing of his throat, and Nanu addressed the 'audience', speaking at a slightly louder volume than usual.
"This is Officer Nanu, Kahuna of Ula'ula Island.  Today, just off of route 11 - on the outskirts of Malie City, I'll be officiating and conducting a Grand Trial. My challenger is Trainer Katla, from the Galar region." His Rotom zoomed over to the young woman.  "Say hello, Trainer Katla!"
Oh shit. Katla had reckoned that he would be recording as soon as she saw the phone appear, but this? She was as tense as a broom handle when the Rotom swept over to her, and it took every ounce of effort to try and not look like she was supremely uncomfortable.
"Hi." She managed, flatly. Suddenly she felt an overwhelming urge to go back and pick the rest of her team up again, if only so she didn't feel so terribly exposed, but managed to hold her ground.
"Best of luck to you, Katla!" the Rotom chirped in electronic positivity, before returning to its owner, the trainer almost breathed a sigh of relief. Calm down, it’s just you and him, she tried to remind herself.
"Tapu Bulu - with your approval, let this Grand Trial begin!" Nanu exclaimed, crossing both wrists overhead and looking to the sky. Seconds later, a loud, echoing gong sounded - the bronze bell of Ula'ula's deity, raising goosebumps across Katla’s skin and making the scars under her hoodie sleeves prickle slightly. Lowering his arms and fixing his gaze on her - those crimson eyes had a different shine to them now - the Kahuna reached behind with one hand, suddenly moving forward into a full-bodied throw of his first Pokeball.
"Sableye! Let's go!"
Katla took a steeling breath, trying to pull herself back into her previous mindset when the Kahuna's first Pokemon came tumbling out. Her eyebrow arched at the sight of the Darkness Pokemon. Ohh, you sneaky bastard. Force trainers to run a gauntlet, then trip them up at the starting line with a Pokemon with only one weakness. Clever. Looks like I got lucky with my choice.
She raised her own Pokeball up to her forehead, closing her eyes for a moment. When she opened them again, they were brighter.
"Alright, little one, let's go! Rimbombee, I choose you!" She slung the ball down, and it bounced open to release the diminutive Bee Fly Pokemon.
Nanu raised his own eyebrow, then shook his head and chuckled.
"A Ribombee? Really? What a shame, figured you might have something a little more... tomboyish up the sleeves of that hoodie," he called out, motioning to Sableye. As if the Darkness Pokemon had eyes in the back of its head, it spread clawed fingers and hissed in obvious agreement with the Kahuna.
Katla shrugged, nonplussed. Trying to get under my skin, are you? Alright.
"My apologies, Kahuna, but I have it on good authority that I have far too many Gyarados for my own good.” She replied. “That and the rest of my more 'tomboyish' Pokemon are in another PokeCentre."
The older man was equally as unbothered that his barb had glanced off.
"Hmm. Doesn't matter though. Can't sting like a bee if you're swatted like a fly - Sableye! Shadow Sneak!"
Sableye hissed again, a streak of darkness extending from its feet all the way to where Ribombee hovered. The Bee Fly’s placid smile turned into a determined frown, but despite the little bug’s attempts to get away from it, an amorphous shape materialized from behind her, the Darkness Pokemon suddenly re-taking its physical form and slashing with wicked, shadowy claws. Katla winced at the blow, recovering quickly.
"Hmph. Gotta admit, slightly disappointed in you, Kahuna.” She commented. “Surely you of all people know not to judge by appearances alone." Especially against a Pokemon your type is doubly weak to. She blinked, suddenly all business. "Rimbombee, Dazzling Gleam!"
The Bee Fly thrilled loudly, the scales of its wings glowing brighter, and brighter, and then brighter still, Sableye snarling loudly and both Kahuna and trainer having to avert their gaze. Nanu’s Rotom moved quickly to capture all the action, providing commentary in lieu of a referee.
"Ribombee's Dazzling Gleam is super effective - Sableye takes some serious damage!" the Plasma Pokemon exclaimed excitedly, and a determined half-grin grew across Katla’s lips. Alright, now we’re talking.
The Kahuna shoved both hands into his pockets.
"Shake it off, Sableye - you're not down for the count yet. Give that bug a Shadow Claw!"
Katla’s grin vanished, discarding the expression with ease.
“Ri! Get out of there and banish this darkness with another Dazzling Gleam!”
The Darkness Pokemon let go a high-pitched shriek and lunged for Ribombee again, and whilst the little bug was fast, she wasn’t fast enough, the ghostly claws connecting with her slim legs as she tried to dance out of the way. Katla grimaced in solidarity, hoping that it was quick enough to escape the Kahuna’s notice.
Facing down the Sableye, Ribombee repeated the same trick again, the brightness coming faster and perhaps more intensely, if you could stand to look at it in the first place.
"Another Dazzling Gleam! It's super effective!” Rotom announced as Sableye hissed loudly, before slowly crumpling to the ground, the light in its jewel eyes dimming. “Sableye has fainted and can no longer battle! That's one victory, two to go!"
The trainer allowed the grin to move over her lips for a moment as Ribombee fluttered back to her. Good start.
Nanu frowned, recalling the Darkness Pokemon with a surge of red energy.
"Turning into a one-trick Mudbray, are we? Let's keep things interesting at the very least," he sighed.
“Depends what your next Pokemon is, Kahuna.” Katla replied, shoving her hands in her hoodie pockets.
If her snark was rankling him, the Kahuna wasn’t showing it, and reached back to pull a fresh ball from his belt, tossing and catching it a few times in his hand.
"All right, Krookodile... you're up!"
As soon as the Intimidation Pokemon emerged, the massive red-and-black bipedal reptilian raised both clawed hands, then tossed its head back with a threatening roar, its innate ability quickly becoming apparent.
The Galar woman’s eyes widened, a genuine smile moving across her face.
"Oh yeah, now we're talking!" She bounced on her heels, thinking fondly of her previous Krookodile partner. He'd taken her far, almost to the very top- She shook her head quickly. Stop that! Focus.
Ribombee fluttered back nervously, unable to resist the other Pokemon's ability. Katla, on the other hand, was not fazed. Nice ability. Shame that it's utterly wasted, she noted, trying not to smirk. "Alright Ribombee, let's bore the Kahuna with something else - use Pollen Puff!"
The Bee Fly shook her head, much the same way her trainer had, and then the rest of its body. Yellow flakes of pollen poured off its wings and body, the Pokemon collecting it all up into a neat little package in its tiny hands. It looked at Krookodile with its normal cute little smile...and then threw the pollen as hard as it could.
Krookodile snapped and snarled in aggravation at the yellow cloud, whipping its head back and forth, both arms flailing as Rotom noted the super effective attack. Nanu waved away the pollen that had headed his way, his expression either grimly determined or rather annoyed.
“Hmph. That little bug of yours can't take much more, I'll bet...” A sudden malevolent smile. “Krookodile! It's Crunch time!" the Kahuna shouted, and the Intimidation Pokemon suddenly surged forward with a speed and agility that was surprising for such a large reptile.
"Ri!" Katla cried out, unable to help herself.
The Ribombee did its valiant best, but already battered by Sableye, it wasn't quick enough to avoid the powerful jaws clamping down around its abdomen with a terrifying sound, the Bug Pokemon crying out in pain.
Kat clenched her fists and teeth together, a snarl curling her lips that she couldn’t suppress.
"Ri!” She yelled. “Another Pollen Puff! Go straight for the eyes!"
The little bee squirmed its way free onto Krookodile's nose, gathering up another collection of pollen from its body, all nicety gone from its face. The bug suddenly hurled itself straight at the Intimidation Pokemon's eyes, only to arc away at the last second, dumping its collection there instead, Krookodile hissing loudly. Ribombee flew back to her trainer, much less gracefully than when they’d begun the bout.
Nanu's crimson eyes flashed, his teeth bared in a grin.
"What's the matter, missy? Can't stand to see your Pokemon take a hit?” He taunted. “You’re too soft - you’ll never complete the Island Challenge if you don’t toughen up!”
Katla knew he was barbing her on purpose, but this one managed to strike home, her nostrils flaring and eyes flashing with pure fury. How the fuck did you think I made it this far, then?! She snarled internally, his nails starting to dig into the palms of her hands.
The older man balled one hand into a fist, extending the other sharply towards the Pokemon.
"Krookodile, there's blood in the water... go for the kill with another--"
The sudden reverberation of a sonorous bronze bell interrupted the Kahuna, and startled Katla out of her red haze, both of them looking up.
Ula’ula’s deity loomed about fifty feet overhead, the unmistakable smell of loamy earth and undergrowth filling the air, sobering the Galar trainer in seconds. She’d heard of the Tapu (how could she have not), but to see one in the flesh was deeply humbling, all her anger and rage draining out of her in a rush. Dimly, she could hear her other Pokeballs rustle behind her, as if they sensed what was taking place.
“--eh?  Tapu Bulu? What're you...?” Nanu asked, the confusion in his voice as clear as what Katla felt.
The Guardian deity shifted, fixing its stare on the young woman, making the twisted skin on her arms crawl uncomfortably before it dropped something. Krookodile, having been ready for his owner's next command, took several steps back as something small and yellow fell to the ground near Ribombee. She fluttered back for a second, before she recognised the Sitrus berry that had settled beside her - not waiting for a command from anyone, not even her trainer, she quickly landed next to it, greedily devouring it.
It only took a couple of seconds first for the berry to disappear into the diminutive bug’s mouth and then to take effect, but the Bee Fly's colour seemed to brighten, becoming more vibrant and her 'fur' fluffing back up. When she took off once more, her wing-beats were strong and fast, and she gave an excited cry - she was ready for more.
Katla’s heart soared to see her companion rejuvenated, and she looked back up at Tapu Bulu hovering above them, still watching her. She thumped her chest with her fist, bowing her head.
"Thank you, Tapu," she said reverently. "I am honoured by your kindness."
"Buuuuuluu!" the Guardian deity responded, sounding another ring of its bell before taking its leave.
"What a rare and amazing interruption by the deity of Ula'ula Island itself! The Tapu's favour has been shown, what will happen now?" Rotom inquired, and for a brief moment Nanu shot the Plasma Pokemon a withering glare.
The Tapu's favour? Katla thought, her eyebrow arching slightly. Surely not. Island Trials are performances to please the guardians - I guess I'm just putting up a good enough fight that it wants to see me go a little further. She was under no illusions as to what would be next after Krookodile - every Kahuna had followed the same pattern, even if Nanu had thrown her a curve ball with his.
"Ri?" The bug Pokemon chirped, reminding her trainer that she was waiting for instruction. Katla shook her head quickly.
"Oh. Well, uh, lemme think - Pollen Puff!"
Where exactly Ribombee was getting its pollen now was anyone's guess, but it still managed to gather up enough into its hands for a payload. This time the Bee Fly hesitated, flitting to and fro before lobbing the projectile into Krookodile's side without warning.
Nanu smirked, putting both hands on his hips.
"As a Kahuna I'll be the last one to question a Tapu's decision,” he said, as the red-and-black Intimidation Pokemon cleared the pollen off itself. “As for this keep-away tactic you're utilizing... two can play at that game, and some of us play dirty. Krookodile! Mud Slap!"
With a snarling growl, Krookodile lashed its thick tail in an overhead arc, sending a large, wet ball of mud in Ribombee's direction.
"Ri, get out of there!"
Too late, as the clump of mud struck the bug Pokemon square on, sending her reeling and obscuring her vision.
"Son of a-!" Katla bit out reflexively, just managing to stop the curse from fully passing her lips - no no no we can't lose accuracy, not now! "Come on, Ri, shake it off!"
The Bee Fly scrubbed at its face and body as her trainer fought for a solution. Shit, he's matted down her Pollen and dampened her Gleam. Her brows furrowed. But she still has one other move.
"Bold of you to assume I wouldn't have a back-up plan!” She yelled. “Ribombee, use Absorb!"
The bug Pokemon shook off the last of the mud, before making an almost malevolent humming sound, raising its hands. Two red beams shot from it, connecting with Krookodile, sapping its energy, the Intimidation Pokemon weakening as Ribombee strengthened, almost rendering the prior attack null and void.
"Ribombee's Absorb is super effective!” Rotom announced loudly as Krookodile slumped to the ground. “ Krookodile has fainted, and can no longer battle!  Another victory for Trainer Katla, one more to go!" It almost caused some feedback with its excitement.
The young Galar woman lifted her chin defiantly, eyes flashing like flames were igniting within them.
"You want to dance, Kahuna?” She asked. “Then let's dance."
Nanu let go a dramatic sigh as he reclaimed the fainted red reptile.
"Sorry, I can't dance - two left feet," he retorted, lowering his head for a moment and pulling the final ball from his belt. Katla’s confident demeanour cooled then. Alright, here come the big guns. She took a steeling breath, trying to calm herself down to think a bit more clearly. Damn this guy, he's getting to me like no-one’s business!
"I'm getting tired... time to put this Trial to bed. Persian! Let's go!"
Nanu’s Persian was much larger than the trainer had anticipated, almost on a par with the Totem Pokemon she’d faced. The huge Classy Cat Pokemon swished her tail slowly back and forth, fixing a narrowed gaze onto Katla and Ribombee.
The trainer uttered a low, appreciative whistle.
"Big, beautiful and deadly." She commented, her eyes taking in the feline admiringly, until her eyes reached the teal coloured stone in the Persian's forehead. The same type as in her own, much smaller Alolan Persian. The Alolan Persian who knew- Katla's eyes widened, unable to hide the sudden dawning realization that spread across her face. Oh no. Oh, NO!
It was a similar realization that the Ula’Ula Kahuna had already made, and he and his Persian had taken a similar stance - predatory, hungry for the winning blow. A curious sort of density had grown in the air, ominous and crushing, and both Katla and Ribombee sensed it, the trainer’s cockiness all but fleeing and her heart beginning a quick rhythm in her chest.
The feeling was sickeningly familiar, and she reached down self-consciously to touch her Pokemon for comfort. Her heart leapt into her throat when she was reminded that they were lying a foot away from her, inaccessible, and she had to swallow down the sudden rising panic. It's okay, we're on Alola. Solid earth. Bright sky. No sea. Breathe. Breathe. The Bee Fly glanced back at her trainer briefly, looking worried for her.
"The kid gloves are coming off... we're going straight for the throat," Nanu said, staring Katla down from across the 'battlefield', a bone-chilling edge creeping into that rough voice - if he noticed her internal conflict, there was no evidence of it. "Your passion is admirable, although you have no sense of respect for your elders... you're burning the candle at both ends, and I'm going to snuff it."
Nanu raised a hand. "Persian... POWER GEM!"
Persian let go a high-pitched cry, raising her head as the gem flashed warningly, releasing a sizeable blue bolt of energy in Ribombee's direction.
"Ri! Get out of there, now!" Katla yelled.
She tried, bless the little bug's wings, but a hit was a hit, and it was a super effective one, Ribombee wailing loudly. The trainer cringed as if she'd been dealt the blow instead, teeth clenched tight together. The Bee Fly was still upright, but for how long? Katla decided to risk it, digging into her pocket.
"Ri! Catch!" She tossed a Sitrus berry out to her Pokemon, who gladly devoured it, regaining some energy. Katla chewed her lip, feeling her Z ring weigh heavy on her arm. If he hits her like that twice more, she's a goner. Her brows furrowed. But I do still have one card up my sleeve, if luck actually smiles upon me this time...
"Trying to buy yourself some time?  I'll allow it," Nanu remarked, that predatory gleam still in his crimson eyes. Both hands on his hips, he looked to his Persian.  "Some trainers and Pokemon would sacrifice themselves for the other.  Admirable as that is... it's useless.  Letting emotions control your actions on the battlefield?  Ridiculous!" He added, shrugging one shoulder.  "You take chances, regardless of the outcome, and you play the cards you're dealt - even if that means losing, and starting all over again."
His comments flared Katla’s rage again, despite it all, her jaws clicking from the force behind her clenched teeth. How dare you! You have no idea what I’ve been through! If it wasn’t for my Pokemon, my bones would be scattered across the ocean floor!
She pulled a breath in, closing her eyes and forcing her fists to uncurl - she was both annoyed and ashamed that he was exploiting her weaknesses with such contemptible ease. Katla should have just accepted that she was staring down the barrel of defeat - she’d been out-manoeuvred and out-played, and she should just go through the motions, let the Kahuna have his victory.
And yet...a part of her didn’t want to give the smug bastard the satisfaction. If he wanted his victory, he was going to have to beat it out them.
Persian didn't move a muscle, waiting for her next command from the Kahuna.  Her whiskers twitched eagerly, forehead gem shining in the afternoon sunlight.
"Persian - another Power Gem!"
Another raspy cry, another blue bolt of energy streaking across the distance, this one striking considerably harder. Katla didn't cry out for her Pokemon that time, not that Ribombee really needed a reminder to dodge the bolt of awful heading her way. And she looked like she was going to do it, until the Persian turned to track the Bee Fly's movements, blasting the Pokemon onto the ground. Katla's foot jerked as she restrained the urge to run to her friend's aid.
"No! Ri!" She cried, fighting back the sudden burning in her eyes. No no no not now, not now!
"Ri...bombee." The little bug was as stubborn as its owner, pushing itself up and taking flight again, but looking very worse for wear, barely able to hover steadily.
"Alright 'Bee!" Katla smiled weakly, taking a breath and swallowing back the tightness that had started to form in her throat. "Guess I am gonna be taking a chance then. Ribombee! Stun Spore!"
Ribombee's wings whirred, kicking up a cloud of orange spores around them, before with one large wing-beat, she blew them over to the Persian, who hissed as they were blown about her, her tail lashing angrily.
A hit, yes! Katla's lips twitched into a grin as she saw the spores hit home, just about managing to stop herself from fist-pumping. Of course, now they've got to work.
Nanu's sharp black eyebrows furrowed, but if he was concerned, his poker face didn't slip one iota.
"I was almost hoping I wouldn't have to use this," he says, one hand reaching up to grab hold of the Darkinium-Z crystal around his neck. “But you have been quite the nuisance.” A sharp tug, and the leather thong snapped easily, slipping to the ground. That sensation of dread doubled in its intensity, the young trainer’s stomach plummeting into the bottom of her feet. "I didn't get where I am by not taking chances..." Nanu added, snapping the stone into the slot of his Z-ring.
Katla swallowed hard. Oh, fuck.
Ula'ula's Kahuna did a short series of arm movements, before leaning forward at the hips... pausing for a moment, then straightening up and raising both arms in a fearful display, the activated Z-Ring shining brilliantly.
"Now... allow yourself to be enveloped by the Darkness... haaaaaaaah!” Nanu hissed, a swell of purplish energy arcing from his form to Persian's. The feline Pokemon echoed that hiss from her trainer, infused with energy. Katla's hair stood on end, scars itching up her arms, her heart beating so hard she was afraid Nanu could hear it.
"Use... Black Hole Eclipse!" Nanu commanded, before turning his back to Katla and her Ribombee. Persian raised her head, the purple energy flaring brightly around her that seemed to suck the light from around them, plunging them from afternoon to almost night.
"Arceus, Ri, please hold on." Katla spoke, the little bug shrinking back, sharing her trainer's fear. The trainer braced herself, closing her eyes and hoping at least whatever happened was brutally quick.
Suddenly, a strangled yowl of surprise split the air, startling everyone and making Katla’s eyes pop back open.
Persian was still in the position she’d assumed earlier, head and tail high, her body twitched and spasming as she tried to move, the tell-tale yellow flickers flashing over her. She uttered another, almost piteous yowl as she tried to struggle through her condition, but her attempts were futile. She was paralyzed.
As quickly as the shadows drew in, they drew away again, the surroundings brightening up and the dark energy extinguishing like a candle in the breeze.
Nanu was silent, his jaw and fists clenched in utter disbelief. Katla was equally dumbfounded.
"That...That worked?" She breathed. "That worked! Holy shit! Holy-"
She didn't know what suddenly seized her - adrenaline, a bout of madness, maybe something else, but the Galar trainer burst out laughing. Enough that she bent double, hands on her knees, thick curly hair obscuring her face as she tried to get a hold of herself. Even Ribombee turned to look at her, and would have raised an eyebrow had she possessed one.
But she did manage to reign herself back in, laughter fading. Then slowly she rose back up to standing, lifting her head to meet the Kahuna’s gaze. Only this time, she was the one wearing the dark, feral grin.
“My turn.”
She slipped her hand into her pocket, pulling out a Z crystal of her own - light-ish green, almost khaki in colour, the symbol of a beetle visible within.
"How fortuitous of you to sow the seeds of your own downfall, Kahuna.” Katla spoke, turning the crystal over in her fingers. “Guzma might like to hoard his Z crystals away from use, but unfortunately for you, I'm not Guzma." She placed it into her Z ring, goosebumps erupting up her body as it activated. "I'm far worse!"
Katla closed her eyes for a moment, basking for a moment in the power that poured into her body - she'd felt power similar to this before, and she welcomed it like a friend. The energy swirled around Ribombee as well, and even as battered she was, she seemed to get a new lease of life. Katla began her moves, at first mimicking Nanu's, before she dragged her arms up and around like she was a zombie, followed through with a wave motion with her right hand, like a Sharpedo breaching the water's surface.
When Katla spoke again, her voice thrummed like the roar of a swarm’s thousands of wings. "Ribombee, let's rock the Kahuna's world! Savage Spin-Out!"
Surging with power, Ribombee released thick threads of silk from her hands, attaching to Persian and quickly encasing the cat Pokemon entirely within a fibrous cocoon in quick, deft motions. Taking hold of the sole trailing strand, the Bug Pokemon shot up into the air, carrying the cocoon with it, before she began to swing it around its entire body. Once, twice...
On the third swing, Ribombee uttered a loud cry and hurled the cocoon down as hard as possible. In a burst of Z Power induced speed, the Bee Fly shot down after its payload, striking the cocoon just as it impacted the ground, shattering the earth underneath with a load roar.
As the dust cleared, Katla surveyed the damage, her bravado fading as she saw Ribombee fluttering away from the limp cocoon she’d left lying in a shallow crater. That...might have been a bit excessive, she thought to herself, her gazing lifting up to her opponent.
"Katla and Ribombee's Savage Spin-Out has secured a victory!  Trainer Katla has won the Grand Trial!" Rotom called out, only to be shut down mid-hover by Nanu's sharp command, dropping to the ground as a regular phone. The Kahuna watched Persian's unmoving form for a few moments, his expression soon shifting from patient to concerned.
“Persian! Get yourself free, now!” He called, dread starting to sink into the bottom of Katla’s stomach as the seconds ticked by. No movement. “Persian!”
The Kahuna moved faster than the Galar trainer had thought him capable of, and immediately her first thought was to aid him, hand dropping to her belt to remind her that she’d discarded her other Pokemon. She looked back.
“Incine-” She began to call, the name halting in her chest as Katla glanced back to see Nanu had freed his Persian, and was cradling her close, head bowed over her. Guilt - thick, cloying and cold - poured over her shoulders, and it brought shame in its wake. It had all been an act, words specifically to get under her skin, and she’d not only brought them all hook, line and sinker, she’d let her anger get the better of her.
Ribombee fluttered close, looking up at her with concern. She glanced away from the scene, rubbing her hand over the Bee Fly’s head.
“Thank you, Ri.” She whispered. “You did so well, I’m so proud of you. Time to rest now.” She pressed a kiss to the top of her Pokemon’s head, before she returned the bug to her Pokeball. Katla kept her gaze averted, going instead to pick up her remaining Pokemon from where she left him, ignoring the few that quivered at her touch.
“Well congratulations, Katla.” Nanu’s voice sounded out behind her. “You passed my Grand Trial. You’re clear to go to Poni Island.” When she didn’t reply or turn around, he made a short chuffing sound that could have been a laugh. “Hey, it’s fine,” he said, his voice gentler than she’d ever heard it before. “Persian will be fine. She’s gone through Z moves like that before.”
The young woman looked over her shoulder to see him approaching, and despite his usual apathetic expression, he seemed sincere.
“You’re sure? It...seemed a little excessive.” Katla sighed, unable to hold his gaze. “I’m sorry, Kahuna. My temper got the better of me.”
“Certainly did.” And in a second, the gentle veneer was gone. “Excessive is all what Z moves are, I’m sure you’ve noticed by now. You were very lucky - Black Hole Eclipse is as frightening as it sounds. Speaking of which,” Nanu took the Z crystal from his Z ring, holding it out to her. “A Darkinium Z, for your victory.”
Katla blinked.
“Oh, thank you!” She turned it over in her fingers, glimpsing the strange symbol deep inside its dark confines, like the outstretched cloak of, well, darkness. “Considering I was shitting myself at the mere thought of it, I’m gonna take your word on it.”
“That’d be a first.” Nanu commented wryly. “Now pay attention, I’m only going to do this once.”
The movements of the Dark Z move were a lot less scary when done in the light of day, and especially with the Kahuna’s deadpan face, even as he loomed over her in the final pose. “Got it?”
Katla didn’t reply, deciding instead to mimic him. She hunched over, swinging her hands down to the ground with her fingers curled into claws, before she straightened up again, throwing her hands forward and arching her body up as best as she could for a diminutive woman.
“That about right?” She asked. Nanu’s red eyes looked over her, one of his thick eyebrows arching up slightly.
“Not bad for a first go,” he said, pausing for a second. It was difficult to see what he was thinking, but he was certainly mulling something over. “You’re not in any hurry to go back to Melemele, are you?”
“Well, I was only heading back there because I thought I couldn’t get further in the Trials, so I guess not.” Katla said, tilting her head. “Why?”
“Meet me at High Roller Sushi tonight, just after sundown.” Nanu replied, stepping away from her. “My treat.”
Katla just blinked at him, his words taking a moment to parse in her head.
“Oh, okay, yeah!” Heat rose into her face in embarrassment. “Yeah, sure, I’ll be there.”
“Good. Don’t keep me waiting.” Were his last parting words to her, the Kahuna raising a hand before he trudged away, leaving the trainer alone with her thoughts and many more questions.
Katla ran a hand through her thick curly hair, uttering a long sigh through her nose.
Well, alright then.

(Thought I’d go back in time a bit, and write Katla’s first meeting with a certain Kahuna. )
Well, this is going to prove problematic. Katla thought to herself, staring up at the tall, imposing wall that behind which was Po Town - the hideout for Team Skull, and where they’d taken a Pokemon that didn’t belong to them.
She paced back a bit, trying to get a sense of its size. It was certainly a formidable construction, and excessive enough that it looked to be keeping its denizens in rather than keeping intruders out. Looks like something those weird Aether Foundation people would build... Katla would have no hope of climbing its sheer, smooth walls, even if she could see footholds.
However, Flying Pokemon could still cross it - it would be an effort for them to get the trainer up and over the wall, but it wasn’t impossible. Two working together should do it, and with any luck she could walk out the front gate scot free. She might have to beat every grunt’s head in to do it, but...
Just as Katla pulled a Pokeball from her belt, she heard someone clear their throat behind her.
“Trying to get into Po Town, kiddo?”
She turned at the gruff voice to see a dour man with short grey hair and dark circles around his red eyes standing a couple of paces away. He was tall, even in a slouch, eyeing her with an almost bored expression. Katla noted the police shields on the arms of his jacket, the Z ring around his wrist and the dark Z crystal-like object hanging from his neck, shining in the dull light. He’s no ordinary trainer. Another Captain? Or is he the Kahuna? Better not risk it either way.
“Yeah, I am.” Katla nodded. “Team Skull stole a Pokemon from one of the orphans at Aether House-”
“And you’re getting it back.” The man finished for her, shoving his hands in his pockets, one thick black eyebrow slowly sliding upwards.
“That’s the short of it, yeah,” she said, watching the man carefully. There was something about him that gave her pause - a dark shape moving under the water.
He snorted, glancing over to the wall.
“Brave. And stupid. You sure you’ve thought it through, kiddo? I don’t want to be the one picking up the pieces after Team Skull chews you up and spits you back out again.”
She bristled, almost biting out ‘I’m twenty four, jackass’, but held her tongue. Something to his tone made her listen quietly - she’d heard enough arrogant boasts to know that this wasn’t one.
“If you go into Po Town, you either live as Team Skull, or fight them. All of them.” He turned his gaze back to her, and it was intense. “You really think you’re ready for that?”
Katla looked back to the wall. There was no telling what was behind it, how many grunts were lurking, or even if their infamous leader Guzma was present. It was possible she was trying to get into a Beedrill’s nest. And yet...
“Not the first time I’ve gone breaking into a place I shouldn’t, and I came back alive,” she said, returning her gaze to him. “Dare say I can pull that trick again.”
“Hmph.” The man grunted, unamused. “We’ll see. Give me your passport.” He rolled his eyes when the trainer bristled. “I’ll have them let you in, but I need to know where I’m sending your remains if you don’t make it.”
Katla arched an eyebrow, but managed to keep the retort firmly in her mouth as she handed the document over. He looked over it with a bored expression, until a smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.
“Hoenn and Galarian, huh? Which halves go where?” He asked, handing it back over.
“Both of them go to Hoenn.” Katla retorted, feeling her hackles prickle. “I was born Galarian, but my parents live in Hoenn.”
The man’s smirk faded, replaced by apathy once again.
“Get all over the place, don’t you?” He paused for a moment, and Katla found herself locked in place by his arresting red eyes. “I’ve got my own reasons, for doing what I do,” he said, turning away and ambling towards the gate. He glanced over his shoulder when he noticed she wasn’t following. “You coming or not?”
She jogged over to join him, watching as he leaned his head against what had to be a peephole, murmuring to the guard on the other side. Her eyes lowered to the police shields on his sleeves. It did make sense that a police officer would have a rapport with Team Skull, especially one stationed so close to their hideout.
But something wasn’t adding up. Katla hadn’t been on her Pokemon journey for thirteen years without learning to get a feel for others, and she could sense that this man, whoever he was, was not someone to tangle with. He’s either got to be the Kahuna, or their strongest captain. They wouldn’t bargain with someone who couldn’t kick their ass. Katla thought to herself. Yet he doesn’t want to bother with it. Hmm. I best keep out of his way if I can.
The man finally stepped away from the door as it opened, fixing his red gaze on her.
“There. Good luck, and try not to die.”.
“Thank you.” Katla bowed her head respectfully. “I’ll try not to.”
He grunted something she didn’t hear, but her focus was already shifting, the Pokeballs on her belt almost shuddering with anticipation. Alright, here we go, She thought, striding into Po Town.
---
“I’ve got you, little one, it’s okay.” Katla soothed the shivering Lillipup in her arms as the door to Po Town swung shut behind her.
The officer hadn’t been facetious - there’d been a lot of Team Skull goons in Po Town, and they’d not taken kindly to her intrusion. She had not taken kindly to them trying to stop her.
She had been half expecting Guzma to be around, but it’d still been a surprise when the Team Skull leader had cornered her to get revenge for his crew. His Golisopod was quite the beast, but Katla’s Magneton managed to bring it down with their shocking Z move, forcing the leader to spit out the Lillipup’s’ location and go crawling back into the dark.
In finding the Pokemon, also Katla found a huge stash of Buginium Z crystals hidden behind some broken furniture. Huh. Guess he’s hoarding them so no-one else can use them. I’m sure he won’t notice a couple missing.
Lillipup whined, burying itself into the trainer’s hoodie as the rain started up again.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you back to your partner, just hold on.” Katla traced her hand over her Pokeballs, plucking a Great Ball free and tossing it out. A large Stoutland appeared from it, and the canine uttered a soft whine as she saw one of her kin in her trainer’s arms, ears drooping.
“Team Skull stole this little one away from the kids at Aether House. Do you mind carrying us there?” Katla spoke, petting the Big-Hearted Pokemon.
“Stout.” Stoutland replied, crouching down to let her trainer climb onto her shaggy back. As she raised back up to standing, she sniffed the air, her long ears pricked up. “Rrroof.” Someone is here.
Katla glanced around. It was already dark with the rain, and the night closing in didn’t help, but there didn’t seem to be anyone obviously hanging around. That said, she trusted her partner’s sensitive nose. Don’t think it’d be wise to get into another fight right now.
“Hmm. Probably some grunt sneaking around. Let’s get out of here before they start anything more,” she said, tucking the Lillipup into her hoodie, before she lowered her body into the dog’s back, taking hold of a clump of her thick fur. “Let’s go, girl!”
Stoutland barked her agreement, before setting off at a gallop down the hill, splashing through the mud. Had Katla stopped to follow her companion’s keen nose, she would have been led to the Po Town PC.
And a watching pair of glowing red eyes.

Katla and Kabu think they’re being discrete, talking quietly in a corner of Wyndom Stadium’s locker room, but aaall the other Gym Leaders be watching going; ‘wait have they got something going on? do they? oh my god, really?’
Then Kabu smiles at her and everyone holds their breath...
But no kiss.
Bets start, immediately. They just wanna see the Galar League’s Dad happy because did you see that smile he’s totally got something for her it was so cute!
Kat and Kabu of course 100% oblivious that this is going on behind their backs, those gigantic goobers. I love them so much.

I’m writing this lovely, important character/relationship development between Katla and Nanu, and then Nanu just goes: “Bored now, can I bang her?”
What, so I can get stuck in another smut with you I can’t finish, Kahuna? I don’t think so.
